Magnetic anomalies over Iceland, measured by Serson et al. (1968), are similar in shape and amplitude to those found over mid-oceanic ridges in general and over Reykjanes Ridge in particular. However, the geology of Iceland does not favour the simple model of sea floor spreading as formulated by Vine and Matthews. The Brunhes period volcanism can neither in place nor in time be related to an opening process of the Central Graben, which actually is a downthrown block and not an opening rift. Furthermore, the structure of Iceland is not symmetric with respect to the Central Graben. The geology of the Central Graben of Iceland does support a model proposed by Thorleifur Einarsson in 1967. In this model elongate ridges of pillow lavas are thought to have piled up on top of parallel volcanic fissures. The actual spreading is negligible. The fissures have been opening at random over a width of about 120 km, and no definite time scale can be set up for the associated magnetic anomalies. This conflict between Icelandic geology and the current views on sea floor spreading, can be evaded by supposing that the mere circumstance that Iceland is an island obscures a spreading process underneath. One might also postulate that Iceland nevertheless should stand as an example of a mid-oceanic ridge which implies that our ideas on sea floor spreading should be thoroughly revised.  相似文献

This paper describes the main elements of fisheries management in Iceland and its development in recent years. The system of fishery management has failed to prevent serious depletion of the cod stock. The comprehensive ITQ system in Iceland seems to be functioning well and has led to increased economic efficiency. The authorities have taken the crisis in the cod-fishery seriously and reduced the catches substantially. They have introduced a TAC rule that will lead to a recovery of the cod stock and to an optimal exploitation, providing that the authorities are prepared to persevere with the system.  相似文献

Between June 2004 and September 2004 a temporary seismic network was installed on the northern insular shelf of Iceland and onshore in north Iceland. The seismic setup aimed at resolving the subsurface structure and, thus, the geodynamical transition from Icelandic crust to typical oceanic crust along Kolbeinsey Ridge. The experiment recorded about 1,000 earthquakes. The region encloses the Tjörnes Fracture Zone containing the Husavik–Flatey strike-slip fault and the extensional seismic Grimsey Lineament. Most of the seismicity occurs in swarms offshore. Preliminary results reveal typical mid-ocean crust north of Grimsey and a heterogeneous structure with major velocity anomalies along the seismic lineaments and north–south trending subsurface features. Complementary bathymetric mapping highlight numerous extrusion features along the Grimsey Lineament and Kolbeinsey Ridge. The seismic dataset promises to deliver new insights into the tectonic framework for earthquakes in an extensional transform zone along the global mid-ocean ridge system.  相似文献

Total-intensity magnetic anomalies observed in a 1973 survey reflect contrasts in the structure of the southern Iceland shelf respectively west and east of 20°W. The western part, which is wider and more evenly sloping than the eastern part, has subdued magnetic relief indicating basement (basalt) depth of at least 400 m. On the eastern part of the shelf there occur pronounced edge anomalies, apparently due to a basement step of at least 1 km mean thickness and of mean width 3–4 km. The distance from the upper edge of this basement step to the bathymetric shelf edge increases from 5–8 km at 19°W to 12–14 km at 14°30W. The basement has alternating magnetic polarities. Linear magnetic anomalies are indistinct or absent in the surveyed region. It is speculated that the sharp basement step represents the trace of the maximum southerly extent of the eastern volcanic zone of Iceland.  相似文献

The relationship between the magnetic anomalies over Iceland and those over Reykjanes Ridge is investigated using the data of the 1965 Dominion Observatory survey. A method is developed for determining the two-dimensionality of the anomalies from the component data measured in this survey. This method is based on testing the first and the second derivative of the magnetic potential with respect to the direction of two-dimensionality, using the component data along a single flight line. Testing the first derivative also yields the direction of two-dimensionality. The outcomes of the two tests (based on a single line) are compared with the observed two-dimensionality (established by narrowly spaced earlier surveys) of Reykjanes Ridge, showing good agreement. As the outcomes of the two tests provide complementary information they are combined into a single factor: A. This factor of two-dimensionality is very low for the anomalies over the shelf of Iceland indicating that the anomalies over Iceland cannot be continued directly into those over Reykjanes Ridge. Over Iceland A is generally low. Over the neovolcanic zone in eastern Iceland twodimensionality is associated with long wavelengths that are not present in the spectrum of the anomalies over Reykjanes Ridge. Thus, Reykjanes Ridge-type anomalies are absent with the exception of the central anomaly. This may not be used as evidence against crustal spreading since the kinematic model proposed by Pálmason for Iceland has a wide transition zone between rock of opposite polarity. The same model if computed for a mid-ocean ridge has narrow transition zones. The larger width of the transition zone blurs the anomalies related to the reversals of the earth magnetic field.  相似文献

Data on the volcanic ash layers in 70 DSDP and ODP Sites and 100 cores obtained during cruises of the R/V Akademik Kurchatov and Mikhail Lomonosov were used for compiling tephrostratigraphic scale and schematic distribution maps of the pyroclastic material in the Quaternary sediments of the North Atlantic and Norwegian-Greenland Basin. It is revealed that the distribution of pyroclastic material through this region is characterized by cyclic and spatially irregular patterns. Based on their petrochemical and geochemical properties, these ashes are compared with the volcanics of Iceland and the Jan Mayen islands. The relations between the extreme climatic and cyclic explosive events are discussed.  相似文献

A regional survey of the southern Reykjanes Ridge (52°N to 57°N) shows an irregular topography: a rift valley which is only partly recognizable as such, with varying azimuth and some fracturezone-like interruptions. The survey also comprised gravity and magnetic measurements.The course of the axis as well as the perpendicular fractures show up well in the free air anomalies as relative troughs within an area of positive free air gravity (Figure 5). There is no indication of density variations within the topographic masses.The anomaly pattern of total magnetic intensity indicates the exact position of the rift axis and a bifurcation at about 55°N. From the parallel magnetic anomalies south of 55°N (Figure 2) a spreading rate can be deduced of 1.10 cm/yr perpendicular to the rift axis (Figure 3). This spreading rate is at the same time the plate movement involved.A survey of the Iceland-Faeroe Ridge with a 3–5 miles grid shows large gravity and magnetic anomalies over a smooth topography, indicating large pockets of light material, probably of volcanic origin. These areas have normal magnetization. Positive gravity anomalies forming a ring structure along the 200 m isobath are characterized by reversed magnetization.The dissimilarity in morphology, seismicity and inner structure between the two ridges that intersect in Iceland suggest that there is no relation between the two phenomena.Paper presented at the meeting of the International Gravity Commission, Paris, on September 8, 1970.  相似文献

A core of bottom sediments AMK-4438 with a length of 320 cm was taken in the North-Eastern part of the Iceland Basin from the depth of 2240 m. The continuous sampling (every 2 cm) made it possible to study the core using the principle of high-resolving paleoceanology. For the stratigraphic partition of the core, we applied the paleotemperature analysis by planktonic foraminifera and carbonate analysis; the distribution of the iceberg rafted debris (IRD) was studied. As a result, nine isotopic stages were distinguished. The change in the complexes of benthic foraminifera indicates that the present-day deepwater circulation in the North-Eastern part of the Iceland Basin had no analogs in earlier glacial periods, including the MIS 5 age. During almost 300 ka, there were relatively warm, rich in nutrients, and poor in oxygen water masses. The formation of the modern Northern-Eastern deep water in the Iceland Basin began in the Bolling-Allerod 14 ka B.P.  相似文献

Increased values of trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11), tritium and stable tritium in the depth range from 2500 to 3500 m at the eastern flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 48°N (WHP section A2) indicate an influence of newly ventilated water. Water with similar Θ, S and tracer properties is found on the WHP section A1 (55°N) situated north of the Gibbs Fracture Zone in the Iceland Basin. The high tracer concentrations are due to the influence of Iceland Scotland Overflow Water (ISOW). The ISOW-influenced water found in the Iceland Basin partially passes by the Gibbs Fracture Zone (52°N) and flows southward along the topography of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. A quantitative analysis of the transport from the Iceland Basin to the Westeuropean Basin is carried out based on the assumption that the water with enhanced tracer values is a two-component mixture of recirculating North East Atlantic Deep Water from the eastern part of the Westeuropean Basin and ISOW-influenced water as found on A1 in the Iceland Basin (NEADWIB). The composition of the mixture and the transport time for the NEADWIB are deduced from the temporal evolution of the tracer values. From the distance between the two sections and the area with enhanced tracer values, a transport of NEADWIB from the Iceland Basin to the Westeuropean Basin of 1.63±0.32 Sv1 is calculated for the density range 41.37<σ3<41.475. Transports between 2.4 and 3.5 Sv result if the transport in the former density range is extrapolated to 41.35<σ3<41.52 (corresponding to σΘ>27.8) in different ways.  相似文献
