Hot-wire anemometers were used to measure air temperature and the three velocity components of the wind within and above a maize canopy. From digitized anemometer outputs, correlation coefficients for vertical heat flux and turbulent momentum transfer were calculated. A comparison of these coefficients with profiles of mean wind speed and mean temperature indicates that the main features of the turbulence may be explained in terms of the usual mixing-length theory. Instantaneous records of heat and momentum flux, however, indicate the existence of other competing turbulent mechanisms due to the unsteady, non-equilibrium nature of the turbulent flow. Regimes of flow dominated by mechanical and/or thermal mixing are indicated. Spectral results show that high shear and turbulent intensity levels as well as the presence of the maize leaves and stalks as vortex-shedding surfaces complicate the energy transfer mechanism. Windsonde data gathered over a nine-year period at three stations in the Southeast U.S. are stratified by season and by time of observation to provide average profiles depicting the diurnal variations in low-level winds. Significant variations are found (especially during the summer months) in wind speed, angle between wind direction and isobars, and the various terms of the kinetic energy budget equation. A qualitative model of the diurnal variations in planetary boundary-layer winds (over land) is developed. Forest decline in some parts of Europe gave rise to various environmental studies concerning the intake and uptake of pollutants in the ecosphere. As far as fluid mechanics is concerned, the current interest is centered on flow-induced phenomena, e.g., the flow-enhanced deposition of pollutants to trees. In order to understand better the mechanisms of pollutant dispersion and deposition to trees, wind tunnel experiments carried out with small real coniferous trees and model trees are summarized in this paper. The flow around single trees and tree stands, both in flat terrain and on hillsides, has been analysed. The measurements were performed with a two-component laser Doppler anemometer system installed in an atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel. A chemical tracer method based on an ammonia-manganese chloride reaction was applied to visualize the deposition patterns around trees and modeled forest stands.  相似文献

A simple prognostic model of the depth of the stable boundary layer is developed which includes both the possibilities of growth due to entrainment and decreasing depth associated with turbulence decay. The model is designed to avoid requirement of surface fluxes and instead uses information on profiles of mean wind and temperature. Mean streamwise and vertical velocities as well as streamwise and vertical turbulence intensities were measured in a combustion wind tunnel used to collect pollutant emission data for agricultural field burning. Objectives were to compare the flow field upstream of a fire to that without a fire present and to compare the wind tunnel flow upstream of a fire to field conditions. Vertical centerline traverses with an anemometer were conducted for 32 separate wind tunnel operating configurations (wind speed, position in the tunnel, with or without fire, ceiling position, and floor condition) with one replication for each configuration (total of 64 traverses). Certain configurational changes in the wind tunnel had substantial effects on the flow field. Turbulence intensities and velocity profiles (as modeled by the log law-of-the-wall to determinez 0 andu * values) in the wind tunnel were comparable to those in the field as reported in the literature. Velocities and turbulence intensities were generally higher, however, with a fire present in the tunnel and all other conditions constant.  相似文献

The main results of the International Turbulence Comparison Experiment (Tsimlyansk, U.S.S.R., June–July 1981) are presented. Groups from G.D.R., Poland, U.S.S.R., and Czechoslovakia took part in the experiment, while Bulgarian researchers were present as observers. A comparison of in situ measurements (by acoustic anemometers, thermoanemometers, and resistance thermometers) among themselves and with remote soundings (by sodars) was made. Simultaneous measurements of turbulent fluctuation characteristics and of wind velocity and temperature profiles were performed by different instruments. The results and temperature profiles were performed by different instruments. The results of these measurements were used to estimate the comparative accuracy of various models proposed for the evaluation of turbulent fluxes from profile data.  相似文献

The operating ranges of meteorological wind tunnels for convective boundary-layer (CBL) simulation are defined in this paper based on a review of the theoretical and practical limitations of the flow phenomena and the facilities available. Wind-tunnel operating ranges are limited by the dimensions of the simulated circulations and of the tunnel itself, the tunnel flow speed and turbulence processes, and the characteristics of the measurement instrumentation. When it is desired to simulate both the CBL and the behavior of other flows imbedded within the boundary layer, such as power-plant plume rise and dispersion, then additional constraints exist on the fluid modeling process. The capabilities of meteorological wind tunnels can also be extended through the judicious use of boundary and side wall flow controls.  相似文献

We investigate the spatial characteristics of urban-like canopy flow by applying particle image velocimetry (PIV) to atmospheric turbulence. The study site was a Comprehensive Outdoor Scale MOdel (COSMO) experiment for urban climate in Japan. The PIV system captured the two-dimensional flow field within the canopy layer continuously for an hour with a sampling frequency of 30 Hz, thereby providing reliable outdoor turbulence statistics. PIV measurements in a wind-tunnel facility using similar roughness geometry, but with a lower sampling frequency of 4 Hz, were also done for comparison. The turbulent momentum flux from COSMO, and the wind tunnel showed similar values and distributions when scaled using friction velocity. Some different characteristics between outdoor and indoor flow fields were mainly caused by the larger fluctuations in wind direction for the atmospheric turbulence. The focus of the analysis is on a variety of instantaneous turbulent flow structures. One remarkable flow structure is termed ‘flushing’, that is, a large-scale upward motion prevailing across the whole vertical cross-section of a building gap. This is observed intermittently, whereby tracer particles are flushed vertically out from the canopy layer. Flushing phenomena are also observed in the wind tunnel where there is neither thermal stratification nor outer-layer turbulence. It is suggested that flushing phenomena are correlated with the passing of large-scale low-momentum regions above the canopy.  相似文献

The report presents the results of a wind-tunnel study of the flow of the natural wind over complex terrain. A 1:4000 undistorted scale model of Gebbies Pass in the South Island of New Zealand was prepared and tested in the boundary-layer wind tunnel in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury.Three forms of construction, viz., terraced, contoured and roughness-added, were compared. Velocity and turbulence profiles, Reynolds stresses and spectra were measured, and correlation of results between different types of construction was calculated. The terraced form was much simpler to construct but was found to be unsatisfactory. The correlation between the contoured and roughness-added models was as high as 0.94, although the roughness-added model made a significant difference to the results in the lower 20%; of the boundary layer. The results of these tests will be compared with results from the field in a future report.  相似文献

Cloud patterns, in the upper part of the atmospheric boundary layer, with eddies similar to Karman vortex streets, have been observed in the lee of several isolated islands. An experiment was conducted to see if major features of these atmospheric vortex streets and associated atmospheric conditions could be simulated in a wind tunnel. A visible vortex street was observed in a wind tunnel while six atmospheric simulation criteria were at least qualitatively satisfied. The physical modeling, the atmospheric data used, the simplifying assumptions and approximations required, as well as the wind tunnel methods and results are described.  相似文献

Thermal internal boundary layers in onshore air flows have a significant influence on pollutant diffusion in coastal areas. Although several models for this diffusion problem exist, measurements for model verification are scarce. In this paper, we present a set of wind tunnel observations and examine the performance of a Lagrangian stochastic model. The good agreement between the model simulation and the tunnel measurements confirms the usefulness of the Lagrangian stochastic model for practical purposes. Sensitivity tests of the model to turbulence statistics show that uncertainty in velocity skewness to the extent of observational scatter does not seem to have a significant influence on pollutant dispersion, while uncertainties in turbulence intensity (variance) significantly influence the dispersion pattern.  相似文献

本文依据地面、高空常规资料,华东中尺度天气试验加密资料,地面温、压、湿、风、降水自记及卫星、雷达资料,对1983年4月27日晚至28日晨的江淮地区暖区飑线进行分析,揭示了飑线的一些有意思的特征。分析表明,飑线经大别山东侧自西向东传播,接近低空西南风急流轴时,对流强度发生变化;飑线过境有短时增温、伴有降性阵水特征;飑线的地面气压由β尺度的飑前中低压、飑后中高压及紧随其后的对称中低压组成。由空间结构分析看到飑前有自近地层开始的暖湿入流,飑后有来自对流层中高层的下沉气流等特征。将其和热带及美国的中纬度飑线比较发现,这次暖区飑线的气压场、温度场、风场及天气分布与经典飑线有差异,与热带及美国中纬度飑线也有区别,我们认为这是副热带地区暖区飑线的特点。  相似文献

本文用美国普林斯顿大学海洋模式(POM)的南海版本(SCS-POM) 模拟了持续冬季风风应力作用下,南海海流的响应特征。结果表明,从静止的海洋 出发,定常冬季风风应力驱动下的南海海流有明显的时间变化,垂直积分后的海流 (全流)约需120天左右的时间,方能达到准稳定态,表层、次表层和深层海流的时 间演变也有类似特征。模拟结果还表明,SCS-POM有能力模拟出南海边界流、沿 岸流和海流的涡旋状结构。  相似文献

High wind caused catastrophes, storms causing property losses >$1 million, during 1952–2006 averaged 3.1 events per year in the U.S. The average loss per event was $90 million, and the annual average loss was $354 million. High wind catastrophes were most frequent in the Northeast, Central, and West Coast areas. Storm losses on the West Coast were the nation’s highest, averaging $115 million per event. High wind losses are the nation’s only form of severe weather that maximizes on the West Coast. High wind catastrophes were most frequent in winter, and were infrequent in the late spring and early fall seasons. Loss areas were frequently confined to one state. Losses in the western U.S. and nationally have increased during the 1952–2006 period, both with statistically significant upward trends.  相似文献

The Kolmogorov constants for CO2, wind velocity, air temperature, and humidity fluctuations were evaluated from measurements made over soybean and grain sorghum fields and found to be 0.78 ± 0.11, 0.49 ± 0.08, 0.70 ± 0.15, and 0.99 ± 0.16, respectively. A large-eddy simulation has been performed of turbulent flow around multiple windbreaks set within a wheat canopy under neutral stability conditions. The simulation is validated against a wind tunnel data set taken under similar conditions. Velocity profiles and second-order statistics are presented and compared to those found in the wind tunnel. From the numerical simulation, we discuss spatial distributions of instantaneous velocity fields and pressure statistics, which are important and telling features of the flow that are difficult to measure experimentally. We present a discussion of the momentum balance at various locations with respect to the windbreak, and similarly, we introduce the budget of a passive scalar. These discussions show the importance of the terms in each budget equation as they vary upstream and downstream of the windbreak.  相似文献

Dust storms on Owens (dry) Lake located 200 milesnortheast of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., havecaused serious PM10 emission problems. Alaboratory-based experimental study was conducted toinvestigate the efficiency of 'vegetation cover' onthe playa to suppress dust emission rates as part ofa mitigation plan.Erodible lakebed material and field vegetation (saltgrass) taken from Owens (dry) Lake were placed in awind tunnel to simulate near-surface wind flow in theatmospheric boundary layer. Vertical wind-speedprofiles and vertical PM10-concentration profileswere measured over six different levels of surfacevegetation cover. In order to understand the mechanismof aeolian particle transport and dust injection intothe atmosphere, the roughness parameter, z0, thefriction velocity, u*, and the surface dragcoefficient, CD, were carefully determined.An empirical equation was developed to predictPM10 emission rates as a function of wind speedand level of vegetation coverage for Owens (dry) Lake.Although the current results apply only to theeffectiveness of vegetation cover to suppressPM10 emissions at Owens playa, the procedure canbe employed for any arid area or region that mightutilize added vegetation as a mitigation measure.  相似文献

Observations of wind velocity and temperature fluctuations were made in the nocturnal surface inversion layer over a paddy field. A remarkable wave-like motion of about 8 min period was seen in horizontal wind speed and standard deviation of vertical wind velocity. In addition, fluctuations of horizontal wind speed and anticlockwise rotation of wind direction with a period of about 30 min were found by power spectral analysis. The phenomena persisted for more than 2 hours. Similar phenomena were also observed at a coastal site at a distance of about 10 km from the paddy field.  相似文献

The characteristics of the atmospheric turbulent Ekman boundary layer have been qualitatively simulated in an annular rotating wind tunnel. Observed velocity spirals found to exist within the wind tunnel resembled qualitatively those found in the atmosphere in that a two-layer structure was evident, consisting of a log-linear portion topped by an outer spiral layer. The magnitude of the friction velocity u * obtained from the log-linear profile agreed with that measured directly, i.e., that obtained from the relation: u * = (u′w′)1/2. Also, the effects of surface roughness on the characteristics of the boundary layer agreed with expected results. In cases where the parametric behaviour predicted by theory departed from the observed behaviour, the probable cause was the inherent size limitations of the wind tunnel. The ability to maintain dynamic similarity is constrained by the limited radius of curvature of the wind tunnel. The vertical distribution of turbulent intensity in the wind tunnel was found to agree qualitatively with an observed atmospheric distribution. Also, a vertical distribution of eddy diffusivity was calculated from tunnel data and found to give qualitatively what one might expect in the atmosphere.  相似文献
