In this work some examples of “twisting” of the Earth in the geologic past are given: displacement of the northern parts of the global submeridional structures to the west relative to their southern parts; the rotation of the “geodynamic pair” of Siberia-Laurentia in the Proterozoic; sinistral displacement of the Northern Hemisphere relative to the Southern Hemisphere after the collapse of the last Pangaea; the equatorial rotation of the continental plates; oblique orientation of the global network of planetary fracturing; an inclination of the axis of submeridional compression; sinistral “beveling”; the dextral “twisting” of Venus. All these examples confirm the idea of possible sinistral “twisting” of the Earth that has been proposed by many authors. The cause of such “twisting” is unclear, although it is likely connected with the Earth’s rotation around its axis. Some of these examples show that many paleomagnetic reconstructions can be usefully discussed in a tectonophysical aspect. Moreover, in connection with this data, the development of a new scientific field, called “paleomagnetic tectonophysics”, is possible.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates techniques for pre-eruption prediction of lahar-inundation zones in areas where a volcano has not erupted within living memory and/or where baseline geological information about past lahars could be scarce or investigations to delimit past lahars might be incomplete. A lahar source (or proximal lahar-inundation) zone is predicted based on ratio of vertical descent to horizontal run-out of eruptive deposits that spawn lahars. Immediate post-eruption distal lahar-inundation zones are predicted based on “pre-eruption” distal lahar-inundation zones and on spatial factors derived from a digital elevation model. Susceptibility to distal lahar-inundation is estimated by weights-of-evidence, by logistic regression and by evidential belief functions. Predictive techniques are applied using a geographic information system and are tested in western part of Pinatubo volcano (Philippines). Predictive maps are compared with a forecast volcanic-hazard map through validation against a field-based volcanic-hazard map. The predictive model of proximal lahar-inundation zone has “true positive” prediction accuracy, “true negative” prediction accuracy, “false positive” prediction error and “false negative” prediction error that are similar to those of the forecast volcanic-hazard map. The predictive models of distal lahar inundation zones have higher “true positive” prediction accuracy and lower “false negative” prediction error than the forecast volcanic-hazard map, although the latter has higher “true negative” prediction accuracy and lower “false positive” prediction error than the former. The results illustrate utility of proposed predictive techniques in providing geo-information could be used, howbeit with caution, for planning to mitigate potential lahar hazards well ahead of an eruption that could generate substantial source materials for lahar formation.  相似文献

We have investigated the relationship between periodic trajectories of barotropic atmospheric model and the modes of the model variability. In particular, we have studied the nature of “25 day” mode of variability (Branstator, 1987; Kushnir 1987). This mode arises as a first complex empirical orthogonal function (or “Hilbert EOF” according to (H. von Storch, Zwiers)) for a given system and is a dominant rotational component of the system dynamics. It was shown that the mode structure coincides with several least unstable periodic orbits of the system. The phase portrait of the system in the plane of the first complex EOF has regular shape with maximum of the probability density function in the vicinity of these weakly unstable periodic orbits.  相似文献

Emphasis has been given to a number of aspects which characterise technological development in today's economic systems and which have an impact on the working environment and on gender differences. Technological change is leading to a strong divide between knowledge “producers” and “users”. The possibility of access to one or both knowledge systems indicates the extent of women's participation in the economic and spatial transformations brought about by the new technologies. This research aims to analyse the development of new technologies and the presence of the female workforce in the field of new knowledge generation, and also to verify gender-related conditions in learning and using new technologies. In particular, an analysis has been carried out of the empirical case study of Pisa, a point of reference for comparisons with other Italian and European cases. The research focuses on: the examination of women's capabilities in the field of new technologies through the analysis of University training courses; the analysis of women's presence and status among the university staff, especially in science and technology; a detailed survey of female employment in innovative sectors. The results of the research emphasise the gender perspectives of inclusion — as regards the application of technologies — and exclusion — as regards the generation of knowledge — of women in or from new technologies. At the same time, the research stresses the growth of women's roles in this sector during recent years and, by reconstructing life histories, underlines the conditions and difficulties that have been met by women entering these new types of employment. Observational evidence proved that even when a borehole is in “fully” stabilized conditions, temperature data may exhibit certain unrest resembling irregular oscillations in the order of hundredths or (in the extreme case) even tenths of degree. Temperature was monitored in complicated hydrogeological conditions in the Yaxcopoil-1 hole (Chicxulub impact structure, Mexico). Two experiments are reported: (a) 20-day monitoring when a logger was located in the center of the high temperature gradient anomaly produced by the cold wave slowly propagating downwards and (b) simultaneous three-loggers 18-day monitoring with loggers located above, in and below the anomaly. All observed temperature–time series displayed intermittent oscillations of temperature with sharp gradients and large fluctuations over all observed time scales. While the “upper” and “lower” records revealed quasi-periodic temperature variations, the “central” record shows fast temperature oscillations with strong up-and-down reversals, all with amplitudes up to a few tenths of degree. The observed temperature–time series were processed by recurrence and recurrence interval quantification as well as by spectral analyses. It is shown that fluid in a borehole, subject to thermal gradient, is stable, as far as the gradient remains below a certain critical value. At higher Rayleigh numbers, the periodic character of oscillations typical for “quiescent” regime is superseded by stochastic features. This “oscillatory” convection occurs due to instability of the horizontal boundary layers. In the specific case of the Yaxcopoil hole, the time series above and below the cold wave (characterized by relatively lower temperature gradients between 20 and 50 mK/m) contain a clear low frequency component produced by tidal forcing. This component dominates over the high frequency domain (periods from 10–15 to 1 min), which exhibit a scaling behavior. This pattern conspicuously changes in the center part of the cold wave, where the local temperature gradient exceeds 200 mK/m and where tidal forcing composes only ~3% of the signal.  相似文献

The current theoretical development of the analysis of compositional data in the article by Aitchison and Egozcue neglects the use of Harker’s variation diagrams and other similar plots as “meaningless” or “useless” on compositional data. In this work, it is shown that variation diagrams essentially are not a correlation tool but a graphical representation of the mass actions and mass balances principles in the context of a given geological system, and, when they are used correctly, they provide vital information for the igneous petrologist. The qualitative validity of the “spurious trends” in these diagrams is also shown, when they are interpreted in their proper geological framework. The example previously used by Rollinson to test the usefulness of the log-ratio transformation in the Aitchison and Egozcue article is revisited here in order to fully illustrate the proper use of this tool.  相似文献

The concept of multifractal modeling has been used intensively in various fields of science for characterizing measures with self- similarity. It has been shown that multifractal modeling provides powerful tools for characterizing patterns in the spatial distribution of geological quantities and objects. Existing multifractal models were proposed for the purpose of handling spatially intertwined fractals with continuous fractal spectrum f(α) (or continuous codimension function C(γ)). In this paper, these conventional multifractals are termed “continuous multifractals” whereas multifractals with discrete fractal dimensions are termed “discrete multifractals.” The properties of discrete multifractals are investigated. It is shown by various artificial examples and a case study of stratigraphy of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) site 645 that spatially intertwined fractals/multifractals indeed can have discrete fractal dimensions. Histogram-and moment-based techniques are proposed for discrete multifractal modeling and illustrated using the artificial examples. The new concept of discrete multifractals and associated multifractal modeling yields not only techniques for characterizing multifractals with discrete fractal dimensions but it also provides insight into the relationships between fractals, bifractals, and multifractals.  相似文献

Silicate weathering and resulting transport of dissolved matter influence the global carbon cycle in two ways. First by the uptake of atmospheric/soil CO2 and second by providing the oceanic ecosystems via the fluvial systems with the nutrient dissolved silica (DSi). Previous work suggests that regions dominated by volcanics are hyperactive or even “hot spots” concerning DSi-mobilization. Here, we present a new approach for predicting DSi-fluxes to coastal zones, emphasizing “first-order” controlling factors (lithology, runoff, relief, land cover and temperature). This approach is applied to the Japanese Archipelago, a region characterized by a high percentage of volcanics (29.1% of surface area). The presented DSi-flux model is based on data of 516 catchments, covering approximately 56.7% of the area of the Japanese Archipelago. The spatial distribution of lithology—one of the most important first order controls—is taken from a new high resolution map of Japan. Results show that the Japanese Archipelago is a hyperactive region with a DSi-yield 6.6 times higher than the world average of 3.3 t SiO2 km−2 a−1, but with large regional variations. Approximately 10% of its area exceeds 10 times the world average DSi-yield. Slope constitutes another important controlling factor on DSi-fluxes besides lithology and runoff, and can exceed the influence of runoff on DSi-yields. Even though the monitored area on the Japanese Archipelago stretches from about 31° to 46°N, temperature is not identified as a significant first-order model variable. This may be due to the fact that slope, runoff and lithology are correlated with temperature due to regional settings of the Archipelago, and temperature information is substituted to a certain extent by these factors. Land cover data also do not improve the prediction model. This may partly be attributed to misinterpreted land cover information from satellite images. Implications of results for Earth System and global carbon cycle modeling are discussed.  相似文献

Several horizons of a unique lithotype called “chertbreccia” are interbedded within the Proterozoic platform sediments of the Peninsular India. These cherty rocks with brecciated texture appearing as blocky masses were earlier diversely interpreted as being products of disparate processes such as fault-zone breccias, collapse breccias, and so on. Two of these horizons, one from the Kaladgi Basin (Dharwar Craton) and the other from the Dhar Forest Inlier of the Vindhyanchal Basin (Bundelkhand — Aravalli Craton) are compared in context of their geological setting, field relations and petrological constitution. A model of the mode of development of these peculiar rocks is reconstructed, taking into account their characters and limitations of previous interpretations. They are interpreted as transported debris deposits of syntectonogenic material released during the episodic activity of the growth faults of the Kaladgi and Vindhyanchal Basins that was diagenetically silicified.  相似文献

This study presents the results of both field and laboratory tests that have been undertaken to assess liquefaction susceptibilities of the soils in Kütahya city, located in the well-known seismically active fault zone. Liquefaction potentials of the sub-surface materials at Kütahya city were estimated by using the geological aspect and geotechnical methods such as SPT method of field testing. And, the data obtained have been mapped according to susceptibility and hazard. The susceptibility map indicated “liquefable” and “marginally liquefable” areas in alluvium, and “non-liquefable” areas in Neogene unit for the magnitude of earthquake of M=6.5; whereas, liquefaction hazard map produced by using of liquefaction potential index showed the severity categories from “very low” to “high.” However, a large area in the study area is prone to liquefy according to liquefaction susceptibility map; the large parts of the liquefable horizon are mapped as “low” class of severity by the use of the liquefaction potential index. It can be said that hazard mapping of liquefaction for a given site is crucial than producing liquefaction susceptibility map for estimating the severity. Both the susceptibility and hazard maps should be produced and correlated with each other for planning in an engineering point of view.  相似文献

The current topographic maps of the Rhone Delta—and of Lake Geneva in general—are mainly based on hydrographic data that were acquired during the time of F.-A. Forel at the end of the nineteenth century. In this paper we present results of a new bathymetric survey, based on single- and multi-beam echosounder data. The new data, presented as a digital terrain model, show a well-structured lake bottom morphology, reflecting depositional and erosional processes that shape the lake floor. As a major geomorphologic element, the sub-aquatic Rhone Delta extends from the coastal platform to the depositional fans of the central plain of the lake at 310 m depth. 9 canyons cut the platform edge of the delta. These are sinuous (“meandering”) channels formed by erosional and depositional processes, as indicated by the steep erosional canyon walls and the depositional levees on the canyon shoulders. Ripples or dune-like morphologies wrinkle the canyon bottoms and some slope areas. Subaquatic mass movements are apparently missing on the delta and are of minor importance on the lateral lake slopes. Morphologies of the underlying bedrock and small local river deltas are located along the lateral slopes of Lake Geneva. Based on historical maps, the recent history of the Rhone River connection to the sub-aquatic delta and the canyons is reconstructed. The transition from three to two river branches dates to 1830–1840, when the river branch to the Le Bouveret lake bay was cut. The transition from two to one river branch corresponds to the achievement of the correction and dam construction work on the modern Rhone River channel between 1870 and 1880.  相似文献

Three generations of tourmaline have been identified in propylite in the Vetka porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit of the Chukchi Peninsula of Russia. Tourmaline-I is characterized by its Fetot/(Fetot + Mg) value, which ranges from 0.33 to 0.49. Tourmaline-II, which crystallizes at a lower temperature, overgrowing tourmaline-I or occurring as isolated crystals, is distinguished by a higher Fetot/(Fetot + Mg), which varies from 0.46 to 0.72. The Fetot/(Fetot + Mg) ratio in tourmaline-III, which overgrows tourmaline-II is lower (0.35–0.49), and is identical to that of the first tourmaline generation. This is probably caused by the beginning of sulfide deposition. Tourmalines in the deposit characterized by complex isomorphic substitutions can be attributed to the intermediate members of the dravite—“hydroxy-uvite”-“oxy-uvite” and schorl-“hydroxy-feruvite”-“oxy-feruvite” series. Tourmaline starts to crystallize at temperatures above 340°C. The fluid responsible for the tourmaline deposition was magmatic, with a significant admixture of meteoric water (δ18OH 2O = −0.85 to −0.75‰). The high Fe3+/Fetot ratio (0.50) indicates high oxygen activity when the tourmaline precipitated. It has been established that the isomorphic substitution Fetot → Al is typomorphic of tourmalines from porphyry copper deposits worldwide.  相似文献

As part of the Yangtze plate, segments of the Dabie Shan terrane of Central China underwent ultra-high pressure metamorphism during Triassic subduction. We studied the geochemistry of the abundant eclogites to evaluate the nature of the protoliths and their geodynamic setting. Although some previous geochemical work exists, the analyses and interpretation herein are based on a new subdivision of the ultra-high pressure sequence into basement and cover units (Changpu and Ganghe Unit), revealing new and important results. In addition, eclogites of the so-called HP Unit south of the UHP units were studied. Whereas the large ion lithophile elements indicate postmagmatic, metasomatic changes of some samples, the high-field strength elements and the rare earth elements display original magmatic trends. The geochemical characteristics of the eclogites of the ultra-high pressure areas display a strong dependence on their “structural” and geographic position. The eclogites of the basement and the Changpu Unit indicate melt intrusion and extrusion in a continental rift system, i.e. during extensional tectonics. In contrast, the Ganghe Unit is characterized by a pronounced chemical homogeneity. The composition of the eclogites indicates generation from a mantle source highly influenced by slab-derived fluids. Those of the HP Unit show similar characteristics. Magmatism of the Ganghe and HP Unit probably occurred in a continental arc setting. A similar age for both units, geographically and/or tectonically separated, is possible. The geodynamic interpretation based on the geochemistry of the four units points to a Neoproterozoic scenario in which the protoliths of the HP and the cover units could have been of similar age and deposited in one evolving geological system. A rift-related larger-scale basin might have formed, e.g. a continental back-arc basin behind a magmatic arc after or simultaneous to sedimentation and magmatism in the magmatic arc. Alternatively, magmatism occurred in independent geodynamic settings, distinct in time and space. The units were juxtaposed during exhumation, after subduction to varying depths.  相似文献

The interplay between the emplacement of crustal blocks (e.g. “ALCAPA”, “Tisza”, “Dacia”) and subduction retreat is a key issue for understanding the Miocene tectonic history of the Carpathians. Coeval thrusting and basin formation is linked by transfer zones, such as the Mid-Hungarian fault zone, which seperates ALCAPA from Tisza-Dacia. The presented study provides new kinematic data from this transfer zone. Early Burdigalian (20.5 to ∼18.5 Ma) SE-directed thrusting of the easternmost tip of ALCAPA (Pienides), over Tisza-Dacia is linked to movements along the Mid-Hungarian fault zone and the Periadriatic line, accommodating the lateral extrusion of ALCAPA. Minor Late Burdigalian (∼18.5 to 16 Ma) NE-SW extension is interpreted as related to back-arc extension. Post Burdigalian (post-16 Ma) NE–SW shortening and NW–SE extension correlate with “soft collision” of Tisza-Dacia with the European foreland coupled with southward migration of active subduction. During this stage the Bogdan-Voda and Dragos-Voda faults were kinematically linked to the Mid-Hungarian fault zone. Sinistral transpression (16 to 12 Ma) at the Bogdan-Voda fault was followed by sinistral transtension (12–10 Ma) along the coupled Bogdan-Dragos-Voda fault system. During the transtensional stage left-lateral offset was reduced eastwards by SW trending normal faults, the fault system finally terminating in an extensional horse-tail splay.  相似文献

The lack of adequate water supply and sanitation services is a major issue related to sustainable development in many parts of the developing world. New strategic planning approaches which directly address users’ needs and demand—often referred to as demand-responsive, community-based or household-centred approaches—are regarded as a crucial step towards improving the situation. This paper investigates household needs and demand for improved water supply and sanitation services in peri-urban, low-income settlements, known as “ger areas”, in the city of Darkhan, Mongolia. The paper is based largely on a household survey conducted in a selected ger area subdistrict in Darkhan. The results reveal a complex picture. Even if the existing situation can be regarded as largely “improved” in terms of the definitions stipulated by the Joint Monitoring Programme for water supply and sanitation, it is shown that there is a need for action nonetheless. The paper also argues that the household survey is a useful method for assessing users’ needs and demand and for meeting the requirements of demand-responsive sanitation planning approaches.  相似文献

Spatial pattern analysis of marine terrace elevations from 40–30 thous. years BP was used to reconstruct sea level/geoid surface and geoid parameters during that time. The polar flattening of geodetic ellipsoid was lower than its present value (1/298.81 and 1/298.26) respectively because of glacial-induced mass redistribution. Increase in polar stress occurred during the last 30 thous. years was possibly driven by pertubation brought to the gravitational field by disintegration of polar ice sheets in the Northern hemisphere. But the polar flattening value becomes only half-restored during the last deglacial hemicycle. So repetitive glacial advances during Pleistocene acted as a global “pump” for uncondensed zones at the upper/lower mantle boundary. Dissipation of tidal energy is an order of magnitude less intensive in its Earth's rotation effect. Stationarity Scores on Training Images for Multipoint Geostatistics   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
This research introduces a novel method to assess the validity of training images used as an input for Multipoint Geostatistics, alternatively called Multiple Point Simulation (MPS). MPS are a family of spatial statistical interpolation algorithms that are used to generate conditional simulations of property fields such as geological facies. They are able to honor absolute “hard” constraints (e.g., borehole data) as well as “soft” constraints (e.g., probability fields derived from seismic data, and rotation and scale). These algorithms require 2D or 3D training images or analogs whose textures represent a spatial arrangement of geological properties that is presumed to be similar to that of a target volume to be modeled. To use the current generation of MPS algorithms, statistically valid training image are required as input. In this context, “statistical validity” includes a requirement of stationarity, so that one can derive from the training image an average template pattern. This research focuses on a practical method to assess stationarity requirements for MPS algorithms, i.e., that statistical density or probability distribution of the quantity shown on the image does not change spatially, and that the image shows repetitive shapes whose orientation and scale are spatially constant. This method employs image-processing techniques based on measures of stationarity of the category distribution, the directional (or orientation) property field and the scale property field of those images. It was successfully tested on a set of two-dimensional images representing geological features and its predictions were compared to actual realizations of MPS algorithms. An extension of the algorithms to 3D images is also proposed. As MPS algorithms are being used increasingly in hydrocarbon reservoir modeling, the methods described should facilitate screening and selection of the input training images.  相似文献

The integration of information obtained from onshore and offshore geological and geophysical research undertaken in the context of the International Polar Year has led to the following results. The continental crust is widespread in the Arctic not only beneath the shelves of polar seas in the framework of the Amerasia Basin but also in the Chukchi-Northwind, Lomonosov, and Mendeleev ridges; a combination of continental and oceanic crusts is inferred in the Alpha Ridge. The Amerasia Basin is not an indivisible element of the Arctic Ocean either in genetic or structural terms but consists of variously oriented basins different in age. The first, Mesozoic “minor ocean” of the Arctic Ocean—the Canada Basin—arose as a result of impact of the Arctic plume on the high-latitude region of Pangea. This inference is supported by the vast Central Arctic igneous province that comprises the Jurassic-Mid-Cretaceous within-plate and ocean-island basaltic and associated rocks. The rotational mechanism of opening of this basin is explained by the slant path of the plume head motion, which resulted in breaking-off and displacement of a fragment of Pangea. The effect of the Arctic plume was expressed during all stages of the opening of the Canada Basin and exerted effects on the adjacent part of the Eurasian continent during the formation of the Verkhoyansk-Chukotka tectonic domain. The Canada Basin was an element of the segmented system of Atlantic spreading ridges, while the Arctic plume that initiated its evolution was genetically related to the episodically acting African-Atlantic superplume. In comparison with the Pacific superplume, the low productivity of African-Atlantic lower mantle upwelling became the cause of slow and ultraslow spreading in the Atlantic and Arctic oceans and determined the passive character of their margins, including the Canada Basin.  相似文献
