Our work was inspired by the recent brightening of Comet 17P/Holmes. The recently observed increase in brightness of this comet was correlated with emission of dust, probably larger in mass than the dust mantle of the nucleus. We analyzed the hypothesis that the comet can eject a large mass of dust due to non-uniform crystallization of amorphous water ice. For this purpose, we simulated the evolution of a model nucleus on the orbit of Comet 17P/Holmes. The nucleus is composed of water ice and dust and has the shape of an elongated ellipsoid. The simulations include crystallization of amorphous ice in the nucleus, changes in the dust mantle thickness, and changes in the nucleus orientation in space. Our computations indicate that: (i) ejection of the dust cover triggers crystallization of ice independently on the material properties of the nucleus; (ii) moderate changes in the nucleus orientation (∼50°) may result in an acceleration of the crystallization of ice in the northern hemisphere, while a rather large change in the orientation (∼120°) is needed to cause a significant jump of the crystallization front in the southern hemisphere, where the emission of dust during the recent brightening was strongest. We investigated the possible reason for an explosion and we have found that the crystallization of the water ice itself is probably not sufficient.  相似文献

This work is intended to investigate the influence of temperature-dependent metamorphism of ice on the shape of small depressions in the surface of cometary nuclei. We are mainly interested in the role of initial cohesivity of a nucleus. For this purpose we simulate sublimation of ice from the facets of initially cylindrical depressions in ice of different initial structure. The simulations account for the diurnal and orbital changes of insolation and its dependence on the current shape of the depressions. Our model includes heat transport in the cometary material and metamorphism of ice. We present the results obtained for the nucleus of the Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, target of the ESA cornerstone mission Rosetta.  相似文献

Following the observations of ice grains in cometary comae and their size distributions, we reexamined experimentally our previous conclusion that the ice grains which agglomerated to form comet nuclei were formed at ∼25 K. The suggestion of a ∼25 K formation temperature was confirmed experimentally. Moreover, we suggest that these ice grains had to be of submicron size.  相似文献

The effect of water ice formation temperature and rate of ice deposition on a cold plate on the amount of trapped argon (equivalent to CO), and the ratios of Ar/Kr/Xe trapped in the water ice were studied at 50, 27 and 22 K and at ice formation rates ranging over four orders of magnitude, from 10−1 to 10−5 μm min−1. Contrary to our previous conclusions that cometary ices were formed at 50-60 K, we now conclude that these ices were formed at about 25 K. At 25 K the enrichment ratios for Ar, Kr, and Xe remained the same as those at 50 K, reinforcing our suggestion of cometary contribution of these noble gases to the atmospheres of Earth and Mars.  相似文献

In order to advance our understanding of the long-term stability of subsurface ice, the diurnal martian water cycle, and implications for liquid water, we determined diffusion coefficients and adsorption kinetics for the water vapor produced by the sublimation of ice buried beneath various layers of fine-grained (<63, 63-125, and 125-250 μm) basaltic powder under simulated martian conditions. Sublimation rates at shallower depths, <10 mm, were determined to be affected by mass transfer through the atmosphere in addition to the basalt layer. For greater depths, the measured diffusion coefficients for water vapor moving through basalt grains were 1.56±0.53×10−4, 2.05±0.82×10−4, and for the <63, 63-125, and 125-250 μm basaltic layers, respectively. Through the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) isotherm, which assumes multiple molecular layers of adsorbed water, we determined the adsorption constants of 52.6±8.3 at 270 K for <63 μm, 39.0±6.4 at 267 K for 63-125 μm, and 54.3±9.3 at 266 K for 125-250 μm, resulting in surface areas of 2.6±0.1×104, 1.7±0.3×104, , respectively. These results suggest that while diffusion is too rapid to explain the purported diurnal cycle in water content of the atmosphere, adsorption is efficient and rapid, and does provide an effective mechanism to explain such a cycle. The present diffusion data suggest that very thin, <50 pr μm, shallow, 10 mm, ice deposits would last for >10 h at ∼224 K, just above the freezing point of saturated CaCl2. Temperatures can remain above ∼224 K over most of the planet, which means that water, even as saturated brine, will sublimate before the freezing point is reached and liquid could be formed. On the other hand, 1 m ice layers below 1 m of fine-grained basaltic regolith at 235 K and 10 Pa of atmospheric water could last 600 to 1300 years. At deeper depths and lower temperatures, ice could last since the last major obliquity change 400,000 years ago.  相似文献

The interaction of carbon dioxide and amorphous water ice at 95 K is studied using transmission infrared spectroscopy. Samples are prepared in two ways: co-deposition of the gases admitted simultaneously or sequential deposition, in which amorphous water ice (ASW) is grown first and CO2 vapor is added subsequently. In either case, a fraction of the CO2 molecules is found to interact with water in a way that gives rise to shifts and splittings in the infrared bands with respect to those of a pure CO2 solid. In co-deposition experiments, a larger amount of carbon dioxide is trapped within the amorphous water than in sequential deposition samples, where a substantial proportion of molecules appears to be trapped in macropores of the ASW. The specific surface area of sequential samples is evaluated and compared to previous literature results. When the sequential samples are heated to 140 K, beyond the onset temperature at which water ice undergoes a phase transition, the CO2 molecules at the pores relocate inside the bulk in a structure similar to that found in co-deposited samples, as deduced by changes in the shape of the CO2 infrared bands.  相似文献

Comet 133P/Elst-Pizarro, known to be a main-belt asteroid with a cometary activity, was observed with the near-infrared integral field spectrograph SINFONI at the 8.2-m Very Large Telescope in J, H, and K bands during its 2007 perihelion passage. The goal of these observations was to attempt detection of water ice absorption bands. We present here the details of the data processing, the results of these observations, and our compositional modeling of the final spectrum. No water ice absorptions were detected within the noise of the spectrum but we show that this spectrum is compatible with a reasonable near-infrared albedo value of 7-10% and a mixture of water ice, black carbon, Tholin and silicates. This interpretation, nevertheless, is not unique.  相似文献

We suggest that the regions of smooth terrain which were observed on Comet 9P/Tempel 1 by the Deep Impact spacecraft were formed by blowing ice grains in an outburst of gas from the comet interior. When gas is released from 10 to 20 m deep layers which were heated to 135 K, it is released quiescently onto the surface by individual conduits. If large amounts of gas are released, the drainage system cannot release them fast enough and wider interconnected channels are formed, leading to sudden outburst of gas. Instability triggering a sudden shift of flow is well known in subglacial drainage of water. The ballistic trajectory of the ice particles reach a distance of 3 km in the atmosphereless comet, whose gravity is 0.034 cm s−1, if ejected at an angle of 45° at a speed of 95 cm s−1. This speed is close to the speeds measured in laboratory experiments: 167, 140×sini and 167 cm s−1, for particles of 0.3, 1000 and 14-650 μm, respectively. Blowing of ice grains can overcome the 1650 m long horizontal section of smooth terrain i1 (Fig. 1), whereas simple flow of material downhill would stop close to the foot of the hill. The ice particles at the end of their trajectory have a horizontal velocity component and this low velocity ballistic sedimentation would lead to formation of lineaments on the smooth terrain, like in solid-particulate volcanic eruptions.  相似文献

Recent attempts using high resolution spectra to detect N+2 in several comets were unsuccessful [Cochran, A.L., Cochran, W.D., Baker, E.S., 2000. Icarus 146, 583-593; Cochran, A.L., 2002. Astrophys. J. 576, L165-L168]. The upper limits on N+2 in comparison with the positively detected CO+ for Comets C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp, 122P/1995 S1 de Vico and 153P/2002 C1 Ikeya-Zhang range between . Ar was not detected in three recent comets [Weaver, H.A., Feldman, P.D., Combi, M.R., Krasnopolsky, V., Lisse, C.M., Shemansky, D.E., 2002. Astrophys. J. 576, L95-L98], with upper limits of Ar/CO<(3.4-7.8)×10−2 for Comets C/1999 T1 McNaught-Hartley, C/2001 A2 LINEAR and C/2000 WM1 LINEAR. The Ar detected by Stern et al. [Stern, S.A., Slater, D.C., Festou, M.C., Parker, J.Wm., Gladstone, G.R., A'Hearn, M.F., Wilkinson, E., 2000. Astrophys. J. 544, L169-L172] for Comet C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp, gives a ratio Ar/CO=7.25×10−2, which was not confirmed by Cosmovici et al. [Cosmovici, C.B., Bratina, V., Schwarz, G., Tozzi, G., Mumma, M.J., Stalio, R., 2006. Astrophys. Space Sci. 301, 135-143]. Trying to solve the two problems, we studied experimentally the trapping of N2+CO+Ar in amorphous water ice, at 24-30 K. CO was found to be trapped in the ice 20-70 times more efficiently than N2 and with the same efficiency as Ar. The resulting Ar/CO ratio of 1.2×10−2 is consistent with Weaver et al.'s [Weaver, H.A., Feldman, P.D., Combi, M.R., Krasnopolsky, V., Lisse, C.M., Shemansky, D.E., 2002. Astrophys. J. 576, L95-L98] non-detection of Ar. However, with an extreme starting value for N2/CO = 0.22 in the region where the ice grains which agglomerated to produce comet nuclei were formed, the expected N2/CO ratio in the cometary ice should be 6.6×10−3, much higher than its non-detection limit.  相似文献

The findings of Deep Impact on the structure and composition of Tempel-1 are compared with our experimental results on large (20 cm diameter and up to 10 cm high) samples of gas-laden amorphous ice. The mechanical ∼tensile strength inferred for Tempel-1: ∼65 Pa is 30 to 60 times smaller than our experimental findings of 2-4 kPa. This means that Tempel-1 is even fluffier than our very fluffy, talcum like, ice sample. The thermal inertia: is very close to our value of 80. The density of , is close to our value of 250-300 kg m−3, taking into account an ice/silicate ratio of 1 in the comet, while we study pure ice. Surface morphological features, such as non-circular depressions, chaotic terrain and smooth surfaces, were observed in our experiments. The only small increase in the gas/water vapor ratio pre- and post-impact, suggest that in the area excavated by the impactor, the 135 K front did not penetrate deeper than a few meters. Altogether, the agreement between the findings of Deep Impact and our experimental results point to a loose agglomerate of ice grains (with a silicate-organic core), which was formed by a very gentle aggregation of the ice grains, without compaction.  相似文献

In a unique machine, the first of its kind, large (200 cm2 × 10 cm) samples of gas-laden amorphous ice were prepared at 80 K and 10−5 Torr. The sample consisted of a fluffy agglomerate of 200-μm ice grains, similar to what is presumed to be the structure of comet nuclei. The sample was heated from above by IR radiation. The properties studied were gas content in the ice and its emanation from the ice upon warming and bearing on the gas/water vapor ratio observed in cometary comae vs this ratio in cometary nuclei and the effect of internal trapped gas on the thermal conductivity of the ice and the density and mechanical properties of pure ice vs gas-laden ice. These findings might have significance for the interpretation of comet observations, the forthcoming ESA’s Rosetta space mission to Comet 46P/Wirtanen in 2012, and to other comet missions.  相似文献

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) has been identified in the gas phase of the interstellar medium as well as in the comae of several comets. Terrestrially, HCN is a key component in the synthesis of biologically important molecules such as amino acids. In this paper, we report the results of low-temperature (18 K) ice energetic processing experiments involving pure HCN and mixtures of HCN with H2O and NH3. Ice films, 0.1 to several microns in thickness, were exposed to either ultraviolet photons (110-250 nm) or 0.8-MeV protons to simulate the effects of space environments. Observed products include HCNO (isocyanic acid), NH4+ (ammonium ion), CN (cyanide ion), OCN (cyanate ion), HCONH2 (formamide), and species spectrally similar to HCN polymers. Product formation rates and HCN destruction rates were determined where possible. Results are discussed in terms of astrophysical situations in the ISM and the Solar System where HCN would likely play an important role in prebiotic chemistry. These results imply that if HCN is present in icy mixtures representative of the ISM or in comets, it will be quickly converted into other species in energetic environments; pure HCN seems to be polymerized by incident radiation.  相似文献

The discovery of plumes of H2O vapor and ice particles erupting from the south pole of Enceladus, the tiny frigid satellite of Saturn, sparked controversy over whether these plumes are produced by boiling, or by sublimation with subsequent recondensation of the sublimated vapor [Porco, C.C., Helfenstein, P., Thomas, P.C., Ingersoll, A.P., Wisdom, J., West, R., Neukum, G., Denk, T., Wagner, R., Roatsch, T., Kieffer, S., Turtle, E., McEwen, A., Johnson, T.V., Rathbun, J., Veverka, J., Wilson, D., Perry, J., Spitale, J., Brahic, A., Burns, J.A., DelGenio, A.D., Dones, L., Murray, C.D., Squyres, S., 2006. Science 311, 1393-1401]. Porco et al.’s analysis that the masses of ice (I) and vapor (V) in the plume were comparable was taken to argue against the occurrence of sublimation and recondensation, leading to the hypothesis that the reservoir was boiling water, possibly as close as 7 m to the surface. Thus, it has been advocated that Enceladus should be a target for astrobiology exploration. Here we show, with recalculations using the original data and methodologies, as well as with new sensitivity studies, that the mass of ice in the column is significantly less than the mass of water vapor, and that by considering three additional effects, I/V is likely to be <0.2-0.1. This means that the plume is dominated by vapor that the thermodynamics permits to be easily produced by sublimation with recondensation. The low I/V ratio provides no compelling criterion for consideration of a liquid water reservoir. The uncertainties on the I/V ratio have not previously been discussed in the literature. Although the I/V ratio is sensitive to particle sizes and size distributions, the masses of ice (I) and vapor (V) are not comparable in any scenario constrained by available observations. We thus discuss the implications of sublimation from a thermodynamic point of view in a context that has not been presented previously. Constraints on I/V ratio from future spacecraft measurements of the plume, in conjunction with consideration of the total plume composition and multicomponent analysis, can help constrain source conditions for the plume.  相似文献

A cometary ice analog sample consisting primarily of carbon suboxide ice (C3O2) was produced from the irradiation of its precursor, carbon monoxide. This carbon suboxide sample was subjected to irradiation with energetic electrons at 10 K to simulate the interaction of carbon suboxide-rich cometary analog ices with ionizing radiation. The destruction of carbon suboxide as well as the production of the primary degradation products, dicarbon monoxide (C2O), and carbon monoxide (CO), were monitored quantitatively by infrared spectroscopy in situ; the gas phase was simultaneously sampled via quadrupole mass spectrometry. A kinetic model was produced to help explain the decomposition kinetics of carbon suboxide in cometary ices and to infer the underlying reaction mechanisms.  相似文献

The gas transport through non-volatile random porous media is investigated numerically. We extend our previous research of the transport of molecules inside the uppermost layer of a cometary surface ( [Skorov and Rickman, 1995] and [Skorov et al., 2001]). We assess the validity of the simplified capillary model and its assumptions to simulate the gas flux trough the porous dust mantle as it has been applied in cometary physics. A microphysical computational model for molecular transport in random porous media formed by packed spheres is presented. The main transport characteristics such as the mean free path distribution and the permeability are calculated for a wide range of model parameters and compared with those obtained by more idealized models. The focus in this comparison is on limitations inherent in the capillary model. Finally a practical way is suggested to adjust the algebraic Clausing formula taking into consideration the nonlinear dependence of permeability on layer porosity. The retrieved dependence allows us to accurately calculate the permeability of layers whose thickness and porosity vary in the range of values expected for the near-surface regions of a cometary nucleus.  相似文献

Solid surfaces of atmosphereless objects in the Solar System are continuously irradiated by energetic ions (from solar wind and flares, planetary magnetospheres, and cosmic rays). Reactive ions (e.g., H, C, N, O, S) induce all of the effects of any other ion including the synthesis of molecular species originally not present in the target. In addition, these ions have a chance, by implantation in the target, of forming new species containing the projectile. An ongoing research program performed at our laboratory aims at investigating the implantation of reactive ions in many relevant ices (and mixtures) by using IR spectroscopy. Here we present new results obtained by implanting carbon and nitrogen ions in water ice at 16 and 77 K. Carbon implantation produces carbon dioxide and the production yield has been measured. Nitrogen implantation does not produce any N-bearing species detectable by IR spectroscopy. Both ions are also capable of synthesizing hydrogen peroxide at the two investigated temperatures. We show that, although a relevant quantity of CO2 can be formed by C implantation in the icy jovian moons, this is not the dominant formation mechanism of carbon dioxide.  相似文献

We report on observations made of the ∼36 km diameter crater, Louth, in the north polar region of Mars (at 70° N, 103.2° E). High-resolution imagery from the instruments on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft has been used to map a 15 km diameter water ice deposit in the center of the crater. The water ice mound has surface features that include roughened ice textures and layering similar to that found in the North Polar Layered Deposits. Features we interpret as sastrugi and sand dunes show consistent wind patterns within Louth over recent time. CRISM spectra of the ice mound were modeled to derive quantitative estimates of water ice and contaminant abundance, and associated ice grain size information. These morphologic and spectral results are used to propose a stratigraphy for this deposit and adjoining sand dunes. Our results suggest the edge of the water ice mound is currently in retreat.  相似文献

We detected the nucleus of Comet 22P/Kopff at 4.87 AU from the Sun with the two IRS peak-up cameras of the Spitzer Space Telescope on April 19, 2007. Using the thermal model of [Groussin, O., and 15 colleagues, 2007. Using the light gas gun at the Open University’s Hypervelocity Impact facility, a series of impact experiments exploring impacts into water ice and gypsum have been performed. Fragmentation of solid ejecta was recorded using two different methods, analysed and compared with the total ejecta. Preliminary results show that the size distribution of the ejecta fragments from water ice is very similar to those from gypsum. These results also represent a step towards a better understanding of ejecta fragmentation in geological materials, including icy surfaces in the Solar System.  相似文献
