The issues of the theory of gold deposit formation are considered. These issues were crucial in the works by N.V. Petrovskaya. The systematics of gold deposits based on stable mineral assemblages and mineral and geochemical types of ores and their families characteristic of certain groups of gold deposits is consonant with contemporary analogue classifications of ore deposits, which, however, require improvement by means of developing their genetic version. Petrovskaya’s proposed subdivision of gold deposits into families distinguished by depth of their formation is such a version, because in Petrovskaya’s understanding, the factor of depth integrates genetic features of deposits formed at shallow, medium, and great depths. According to recent data, the depth interval of localization of ore deposits is estimated at 15–20 km instead of 6–10 km suggested earlier; thus, the intervals of medium and great depths increase. Attention is called to the Petrovskaya’s ideas of stadial progressive development of ore formation with change in pyrite-arsenopyrite mineralization by base-metal and telluride mineralization along with advanced and concomitant deposition of quartz. The stadial formation of shallow-seated deposits and colloidal mineral formation therein, as well as the concept of gel metasomatism and mechanisms of accompanying destruction of preceding mineral assemblages developed by Petrovskaya, are considered and their implications are illustrated by specific deposits. Petrovskaya’s views on sources of ore matter and the polygenetic character of gold and Au-bearing deposits are discussed.  相似文献

The response of radial growth of tamarisk (Tamarix ramosissima) growing on the shore of West-Juyan Lake, on the Heihe River in northwestern China, to changes in the lake’s water regime was studied using tree-ring chronologies, principal components (PC) analysis, and classical correlation analysis. The first PC accounted for 53.3% of the total variance and reflected a common growth response at different sites. Correlation analysis indicated that fluctuations in the lake’s water level during the growing season (May–August) was primarily responsible for variations in the radial growth of tamarisk and explained more of the variance at low-lying sites than at higher sites. The second PC accounted for 30.7% of the total variance and revealed distinct differences in growth response between low-lying sites and those on higher ground. Total annual precipitation played an important role in radial growth of tamarisk at the higher sites. The spatial pattern in the tree-ring chronologies for different sites was performed in the temporal pattern of the tree-ring chronology at the same site. Other factors such as microtopography, soil salinity, sand activity, and browsing by herbivores also affected the radial growth of tamarisk. The diversity in responses to the maximum water table depth for tamarisk in the study area appears to have been caused by local variations in precipitation, which can compensate to some degree for the inability of a plant’s roots to reach the water table.  相似文献

Research on land use and cover change (LUCC) is an important aspect of the study of global change or global warming. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is a good place to study global change because of its unique natural conditions, so we chose the source region of China’s Yellow River for a case study of the driving forces behind LUCC. We used Landsat images obtained in 1989, 2000, and 2005 to establish databases of land use and cover at these times. We then derived LUCC information by overlaying these layers using GIS software. By studying the processes responsible for LUCC, we analyzed the driving forces, which included climatic change, human activities, animal and insect damage, and the influences of government policies. During the 16-year study period, LUCC occurred slowly in response to two groups of processes: natural and anthropogenic. The main driving forces included climate change (the region is becoming drier and warmer), human activities (especially overgrazing), and animal and insect damage. Although political measures such as key national projects to improve the ecological environment could help to restore the region’s vegetation and slow desertification, the region’s fragile ecosystems and harsh natural conditions will make it extremely difficult to rehabilitate the eco-environment.  相似文献

Extensive nebkha areas develop mainly under the control of aeolian processes, and their sediments record information on regional environmental changes during different periods. Such areas have developed on the dry riverbeds and deserted arable lands of China’s Alaxa Plateau, Taklimakan, and Kumutage deserts. In this paper, we studied nebkhas that had developed in the Heicheng–Juyan region to determine their CaCO3 contents, particle size distributions, and creation dates. Extensive human activities have occurred in this region since at least in the late Tang Dynasty (618–907 ad). Although historical records show that most of the region’s rivers dried up around 1372, surface water persisted in some areas until the early Qing Dynasty (1644–1911 ad). After the 1600s, extensive nebkhas began to develop due to drying of the region’s rivers. The early stages of nebkha development were controlled by both the sediment supply and the regional wind regime, whereas late stages were controlled primarily by variations in wind activity. In the Alaxa Plateau, it took about 100 years for arable lands and riverbeds to evolve into gobi deserts, and during this time, several phases occurred with different levels of wind activity. The land degradation processes in this region are mainly controlled by surface water resources, and the impact of human activities such as reclamation on land degradation appear to have been overestimated in previous studies.  相似文献

Periodic increments in the growth of organismal shells and fossils in the intertidal zone were studied by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and chemical composition analyses. The results were used to calculate the orbital parameters of the Earth-Moon system from the Ordovician to Quaternary period. The annual, semi-annual, biweekly (14-day), daily and subdaily growth rhythms were identified on the surface of shells. The periodic changes in the growth increments of shells and the rhythmic variations of microelements in fossils and organisms were reliable indicators of environmental changes. There were 415.69 days for an annual period in Ordovician, 407.1 days in Devonian, 400.51 days in Carboniferous-Permian, 393.98 days in Tertiary, 374.13 days in Triassic and 367.4 days in Quaternary. The data collected and calculated from these growth increments show that – from the Ordovician to the Quaternary period – the rate of Earth’s rotation has been slowing down and that the distance from the Earth to the Moon has been increasing, while the rate of lunar retreat has been decreasing.  相似文献

Hurricanes are one of the major natural disturbances affecting human livelihoods in coastal zones worldwide. Assessing hurricane risk is an important step toward mitigating the impact of tropical storms on human life and property. This study uses NOAA’s historical tropical cyclone database (HURDAT or ‘best-track’), geographic information systems, and kernel smoothing techniques to generate spatially explicit hurricane risk maps for New England. Southern New England had the highest hurricane risk across the region for all storm intensities. Long Island, western Connecticut, western Massachusetts, and southern Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket had high storm probabilities and wind speeds. Results from this study suggest that these locations may be of central importance for focusing risk amelioration resources along the Long Island and New England coastlines. This paper presents a simple methodology for hurricane risk assessment that could be applied to other regions where long-term spatial storm track data exist.  相似文献

The area in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India, is selected to discuss the impact of seasonal variation of groundwater quality on irrigation and human health, where the agriculture is the main livelihood of rural people and the groundwater is the main source for irrigation and drinking. Granite gneisses associated with schists and charnockites of the Precambrian Eastern Ghats underlie the area. Groundwater samples collected seasonally, pre- and post-monsoons, during three years from forty wells in the area were analyzed for pH, EC, TDS, TA, TH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, CO32−, HCO3, Cl, SO42−, NO3and F. The chemical relationships in Piper’s diagram, Chebotarev’s genetic classification and Gibbs’s diagram suggest that the groundwaters mainly belong to non-carbonate alkali type and Cl group, and are controlled by evaporation-dominance, respectively, due to the influence of semi-arid climate, gentle slope, sluggish drainage conditions, greater water–rock interaction, and anthropogenic activities. A comparison of the groundwater quality in relation to drinking water quality standards proves that most of the water samples are not suitable for drinking, especially in post-monsoon period. US Salinity Laboratory’s and Wilcox’s diagrams, and %Na+ used for evaluating the water quality for irrigation suggest that the majority of the groundwater samples are not good for irrigation in post-monsoon compared to that in pre-monsoon. These conditions are caused due to leaching of salts from the overlying materials by infiltrating recharge waters. A management plan is suggested for sustainable development of the area.  相似文献

Despite the salience of the Second World War in paving the way for Singapore to attain formal independent status in 1965, it was not until the 1990s that war events were inserted into the state’s narratives, and ‘mapped’ onto its spaces as visible national fodder to bind citizens together. Since then, memoryscapes in many forms have proliferated over the state’s cityscape. After tracing the genesis of official war commemorative gestures within Singapore, the paper examines the ways in which Singaporeans have responded to them. Specifically, the paper argues that, while Singaporeans recognize the importance of remembering the war as nationally significant, this has not translated into any physical attempt or desire—beyond the discursive—to participate in the state’s commemorative endeavours. In analyzing factors that may have hindered the actual bodily practice of war remembrance in Singapore, nationalized war memoryscapes are also seen as embodying numerous politics due to tensions arising from a collision between what the state and its people perceive to be ideal means of remembering and representing the war within national discourses in the context of the present.  相似文献

This paper juxtaposes the actual areas of settlement and settlement activities of Chinese migrants in Brisbane’s southern suburbs since the mid-1980s, with the concomitant, ‘government planned’ construction of the city’s Chinatown as an ‘exotic,’ ‘ethnic,’ and ‘cosmopolitan’ landmark. It argues that while the latter, as with Chinatowns in other Australian and world cities, has continued to appropriate the symbols of so-called ‘Chineseness’ to sell the locale to non-Chinese, the former, in recalling the notion of ‘ethnoburbia,’ significantly evinces actual Chinese migrants’ agency and role in place-making. In the process, these migrants have not only established a local, ethnically meaningful environment, but also challenged the still current metonymic Western image of the Chinese as preferring life in ‘ethnic’ urban enclaves that had its origin from early Chinese settlement and fundamentally detached from the lives of other ethnic groups per se. Indeed greater recognition and comprehension of such locales may go a long way to illustrate that many Chinese living in Australia today do not fit the territorial, place-based identity often associated with them in the imagination of mainstream society.  相似文献

Estimating the undiscovered mineral resources of a terrane is a challenging, yet essential, task in mineral exploration. We apply Zipf’s law rank statistical analysis to estimate the undiscovered nickel sulphide resources in the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt, Western Australia. The analysis suggests that about 3.0 to 10.0 Mt of nickel sulphide resources are yet to be discovered in this belt, compared to the currently known total nickel sulphide endowment of 10.8 Mt. This undiscovered nickel sulphide endowment is likely to be hosted by incompletely delineated deposits and undiscovered deposits in less explored komatiites in the belt. Using the more detailed data subset of the Kambalda domain, this study manipulates Zipf’s law to estimate the sizes of undiscovered deposits, in addition to the domain’s total nickel sulphide endowment estimate. Importantly, regression analysis shows that the gradient of the line of best fit through the logarithmic rank-size plot for the detailed Kambalda data subset is −1. This gradient, which is the key Zipf’s law constant k, has the value of −0.92 for the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt which is collectively less mature than the Kambalda domain. This result corroborates the use of k = −1 in Zipf’s law predictive analyses of mineral resources for deposit populations for which the value of k = −1 has not yet been attained due to exploration immaturity.  相似文献

Various national and international communities have addressed women’s issues and taken various efforts to empower them so as to enhance their social and health status and involve them in developmental activities. The Indian DHS survey (National Family Health Survey, 1998–1999) provides an opportunity to study women’s empowerment in India. The survey collected information on several dimensions of women’s empowerment from 90,303 ever-married women (ages 15–49), from all the states of India. Utilizing these data sets, four indices – household autonomy index, mobility index, attitude towards gender index and attitude towards domestic violence index – are constructed to measure the different dimensions of empowerment. Using these indices, the spatial and socio-economic and cultural disparities that exist within India are analyzed. Finally, an attempt is made to identify some important determinants for women’s empowerment using multiple logistic regression analysis. The results show that at the national level, 43% of the women have high household autonomy; 23% of the women have high freedom to move outside their home; 40% of the women have no gender preference attitude; and only 43% of the women defy domestic violence. But there are significant divergences in these indices of women’s empowerment across the different states and socio-economic and cultural settings within India. Women’s educational levels emerged as an important predictor for all the four dimensions of women’s empowerment. Additionally, media exposure and age have emerged as the important predictors for some dimensions of woman’s empowerment. This research looks at the very nature of perception of seismic risk, an issue that is not only academically important, but also it can save lives and reduce injury and community costs. The background idea is that citizens in big cities, vulnerable to seismic hazard are living with latent and permanent concerns about a possible earthquake. We were interested in revealing significant aspects of Bucharest citizens’ orientations and tendencies in relation to the possible seismic event. Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is exposed to the greatest seismic hazard compared with other European capitals. The dimensions of study were: the anticipations of seism occurrence, the behavior during the event, evaluations of consequences, support factors, and individual vulnerability. This article is an example of the low cost approach on a sample of 190 citizens, understood as an exercise in attempting to relate population characteristics to various aspects of risk perception. The methodology used was based on a field investigation, where the research agents’ applied one questionnaire containing free/post codified/fan answers concerning: demographic variables, the buildings’ features, and perceptions about the possible earthquake event. The findings of this study showed that the hazard perception significantly associates with aspects concerning the subjects’ orientation toward institutional factors/human relations/negativism, and toward financial/material/moral support in case of disaster etc. It is hoped that this issue will serve to inspire further investigations into this very important and socially sensitive field, due to the fact that hazard analysis and mitigation would be more effective when it takes into account the human dimension of disasters.  相似文献

The properties of giant radio sources (GRS’s) are considered with the aim of identifying conditions contributing to their formation, using data from the literature, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and the APM catalog. The optical and radio properties of normal-size radio sources, (≤1 Mpc), are compared. The following conclusions are reached. (1) The fraction of objects with broad emission lines among GRS’s with high-excitation spectra is the same as for isotropic samples of radio sources; in the framework of the “unified scheme,” this testifies to an isotropic distribution of angles between the radio jets of GRS’s and the line of sight, i.e., GRS’s do not represent a population of objects whose radio jets are in the plane of the sky. (2) Giant radio sources do not differ from normal radio sources in the distributions of various asymmetry parameters for their extended radio components; in the unified scheme, the similarity of the asymmetry distributions for giant radio galaxies and giant radio quasars suggests that the origin of the asymmetry of their extended radio components is inhomogeneity of the external conditions. (3) The observed powers of the radio jets of giant and normal radio sources do not differ, making it unlikely that the large sizes of the GRS’s are due to this factor. (4) The richness and character of the environments of giant and normal radio sources do not differ: giant host galaxies are found in both isolated fields and in clusters of up to Abell class 1 in richness. This argues against the idea that a low density of the environment is the only origin of GRS’s. (5) The relatively large fraction of radio sources with two pairs of extended radio components (so-called double-double radio sources) among GRS’s testifies that the lifetimes of GRS’s are approximately an order of magnitude longer than those of normal radio sources.Given the equal spatial densities of nearby (z < 0.1) GRS’s and FR II radio sources with powers P 1.4 MHz > 1025 W/Hz, this indicates that ∼10% of FR II radio sources have lifetimes an order of magnitude longer, and evolve into GRS’s. (6) The small (∼0.1) ratio of the number of known GRS’s to the number of normal FR II radio sources, together with the observed spatial density of GRS’s at z ∼ 0.6, which is an order of magnitude lower than the predicted value, suggests that a considerable number of GRS’s were missed by surveys at z > 0.1, possibly due to observational selection effects because of their relatively low radio powers and radio surface brightnesses. (7) The absence of “double-double” giant quasars suggests that these objects have a shorter activity time scale than GRS’s. In an evolutionary scenario that is an alternative to the unified scheme uniting “radio loud” quasars and radio galaxies, radio quasars evolve with time into radio galaxies, and the observed relative number of radio quasars among the GRS’s (∼10%) can be interpreted as reflecting the existence of a long-lived population of “radio loud” quasars comprising ∼10% of all radio quasars, with such a population of long-lived radio quasars being the parent population for giant radio galaxies.  相似文献

NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center is using state-of-the-art Internet tools for natural hazards education, public outreach, and access to natural hazards data. For example, NGDC acquires, processes, and provides access to geologic hazards event data that are useful in natural hazards risk assessment and hazards-related research. In addition, a collection of natural hazards slides and a teacher’s guide on volcanoes are available online. NGDC also created an online “Kids Hazards Quiz” to test the user’s knowledge of disaster safety information. An online Natural Hazards Data Resources Directory provides access to information and links to organizations that provide natural hazards data and information. Expanded access to these data and information by the public and researchers can increase public awareness of natural hazards, improve hazards research, and ultimately reduce the devastating impacts of natural disasters.  相似文献

The Netherlands is part of the historic Northwest-Southeast multi-confessional culture belt according to the comparative framework of church-state relations in Europe as recently developed by Madeley on the basis of Rokkan’s conceptual map. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of the church-state relations in the Netherlands within this historic framework of state-formation and nation-building, and to interpret recent challenges of its historic state-church model, such as secularisation, the rise of immigrant religions, and general ‘de- and re-territorialisation’ tendencies. The Netherlands developed from a relatively very tolerant polity dominated by the Calvinist Church to a ‘pillarised’ society, in which the Rome-Reformation divide (which also had a strong geographical dimension) was institutionalised in the political system. After the 1960s, very strong secularisation put this ‘pillarised’ system under severe pressure, but the remnants of this system offered a favourable opportunity structure for religious newcomers (Muslims in particular), who could establish their mosques and Muslim schools relatively easily. However, while the main Protestant churches, and even Catholic and Protestant political parties have merged, failing integration of these newcomers in Dutch society and terrorist attacks at the global level as well as in the Netherlands encouraged a new divide between Muslims and non-Muslims. The metropolitan areas in particular became the scene of this new divide.  相似文献

Urban development pressures, preservation of environmentally sensitive areas and regional planning are the focus of current debates on regionalism in both fast and slow growth regions. Based on two cases—a campaign to preserve ecological integrity and reduce sprawl on the Oak Ridges Moraine in the Greater Toronto Area and Rochester’s anti-sprawl campaign for regional equity—the paper examines how two anti-sprawl campaigns brought to the fore alternative constructions of regionalism. In the fast growing Toronto region, citizen mobilization and upper tier intervention resulted in a legislative base for regionalism. In the slow growth Rochester region, the city had limited success in gaining regional redistribution. Such divergent outcomes relate to differences in intergovernmental relations, the city’s influence on the region, receptivity of suburbs to smart growth, and the potential for values of nature preservation and justice to mobilize regional coalitions.  相似文献

Spectral harmonic analysis and synthesis of Earth’s crust gravity field   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
We developed and applied a novel numerical scheme for a gravimetric forward modelling of the Earth’s crustal density structures based entirely on methods for a spherical analysis and synthesis of the gravitational field. This numerical scheme utilises expressions for the gravitational potentials and their radial derivatives generated by the homogeneous or laterally varying mass density layers with a variable height/depth and thickness given in terms of spherical harmonics. We used these expressions to compute globally the complete crust-corrected Earth’s gravity field and its contribution generated by the Earth’s crust. The gravimetric forward modelling of large known mass density structures within the Earth’s crust is realised by using global models of the Earth’s gravity field (EGM2008), topography/bathymetry (DTM2006.0), continental ice-thickness (ICE-5G), and crustal density structures (CRUST2.0). The crust-corrected gravity field is obtained after modelling and subtracting the gravitational contribution of the Earth’s crust from the EGM2008 gravity data. These refined gravity data mainly comprise information on the Moho interface and mantle lithosphere. Numerical results also reveal that the gravitational contribution of the Earth’s crust varies globally from 1,843 to 12,010 mGal. This gravitational signal is strongly correlated with the crustal thickness with its maxima in mountainous regions (Himalayas, Tibetan Plateau and Andes) with the presence of large isostatic compensation. The corresponding minima over the open oceans are due to the thin and heavier oceanic crust.  相似文献

Elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio of soils are two important parameters required for safe design of various civil engineering structures. The elastic modulus and shear modulus of the soils are generally obtained from the resonant column, torsional shear tests and geophysical methods. Though, from these parameters the Poisson’s ratio can be determined, these tests are quite elaborate, cumbersome, time consuming and require skilled manpower particularly for data interpretation. Moreover, direct determination of the Poisson’s ratio by employing micro-strain gauges, which measure axial and lateral strains using Wheatstone bridge circuits, is difficult for soils due to the problems associated with their fixing on the surface of the sample. Under these circumstances, application of piezoceramic elements, which can generate shear and compression waves, seems to be an excellent alternative. Using these wave velocities, the Poisson’s ratio can be computed easily and precisely. However, how this (computed) value of the Poisson’s ratio compares vis-à-vis that obtained from the conventional triaxial tests (i.e., strain controlled uniaxial compression tests), which yield stress–strain relationship, needs to be established. With this in view, investigations were conducted on soils of different types (clays and sands) in their disturbed and undisturbed forms by resorting to piezoceramic tests and the triaxial tests. Details of the methodology are presented in this paper and it has been demonstrated that application of piezoceramic elements yields the Poisson’s ratio and the elastic modulus of the soils quite easily, particularly for the soft clays and sands.  相似文献

Communities are increasingly becoming development spaces where members are dynamic actors in fashioning issues of common interest. This paper explores women’s efforts at building social capital for communitarian ventures in selected rural localities of the Cameroon grasslands. It is argued that effective participation in raising livelihoods and infrastructure provisioning is facilitated through women’s social networks (njangis). The paper situates the gender concerns in community participation, rekindled through village development associations (VDAs) – crucial in needs identification, prioritization and execution of identified projects. Based on focused field studies in selected localities, it is established that due to their low social status, workloads and tight schedule, women remain on the sidelines of the leadership in VDAs. However, women’s in-cash or in-kind contribution remains crucial to the successful implementation of projects. Enhancing female participation hinges on efforts at erasing cultural stereotypes that project women as domestic workers, improving literacy, increased access to productive resources especially land, direct support to women’s agricultural activity and improved rural infrastructure (roads, water supply, and electricity) that is compromising women’s participation and empowerment drive.  相似文献

Most U.S. metropolitan regions have experienced urban “sprawl,” or the outward spreading of urban development from city centers. For cities lying in areas prone to severe weather, the sprawl phenomenon exposes greater numbers of developed areas and inhabitants to a variety of thunderstorm hazards. This study’s principal goal is to determine how urbanization growth patterns affect a region’s vulnerability to severe weather events. To assess how sprawl may impact vulnerability to tornadoes, hail, and convective wind events, an analysis examining potential loss may be utilized. This study employs two distinct approaches to examine how the Atlanta area’s rapid and extensive development during the latter half of the twentieth Century has affected its overall potential exposure to thunderstorm hazards. First, archived census data are used to estimate overall impacts from hypothetical significant tornado, nontornadic convective wind, and hail events occurring at different time periods throughout several locations in the Atlanta metropolitan region. Second, economic factors are integrated into the analysis, which assists in determining how these hypothetical severe event scenarios may have changed from a cost standpoint if they were to occur in 2006 as opposed to 1960.  相似文献
