In-water and remote measurements of ocean color   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Spectral measurements of downwelling irradiance, E d(), above the surface, and of upwelling irradiance just below the surface, E u(), allow computation of spectral values of the diffuse reflectance R() = E u()/E d(); this yields full information about the true color and brightness of the ocean. Typical results are presented and interpreted for waters very different in turbidity and phytoplankton content. Conversely, the possibility of infering the water content from R() data at selected wavelengths is examined in terms of the respective number of equations and unknowns. The necessary use of assumptions and of empirical laws is emphasized.The magnitude of the useful signal emerging from the water, and the magnitude of the additional signals due to specular reflexion at the interface and to atmospheric scattering, are compared on the basis of spectroradiometric measurements performed within and above the sea, from different altitudes. These unwanted signals are dominant, causing a drastic change in the spectral composition of the light received by a remote sensor. Tropospheric photodissociation rate coefficients (J values) were calculated for NO2, O3, HNO2, CH2O, and CH3CHO using high spectral resolution (0.1 mm wavelength increments), and compared to the J values obtained with numerically degraded resolution (=1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 nm, and several commonly used nonuniform grids). Depending on the molecule, substantial errors can be introduced by the larger increments. Thus for =10 nm, errors are less than 1% for NO2, less than 2% for HNO2, +6.5% to -16% for CH2O, -6.9% to +24% for CH3CHO, and -24% to +110% for O3. The errors for CH2O arise from the fine structure of its absorption spectrum, and are prevalently negative (underestimate of J). The errors for O3, and to a lesser extent for CH3CHO, arise mainly from under-resolving the overlap of the molecular action spectrum and the tropospheric actinic flux in the wavelength region of stratospheric ozone attenuation. The sign of those errors depends on whether the actinic flux is averaged onto the grid before or after the radiative transfer calculation. In all cases studied, grids with 2 nm produced errors no larger than 5%.  相似文献

STAR (System for Transfer of Atmospheric Radiation) was developed to calculate accurately and efficiently the irradiance, the actinic flux, and the radiance in the troposphere. Additionally a very efficient calculation scheme to computer photolysis frequencies for 21 different gases was evolved. STAR includes representative data bases for atmospheric constituents, especially aerosol particles. With this model package a sensitivity study of the influence of different parameter on photolysis frequencies in particular of O3 to Singlet D oxygen atoms, of NO2, and of HCHO was performed. Zusammefassung Um Trübungsbestimmungen nach Aktinometermessungen gegenüber demSchüeppschen Verfahren (und ähnlichen) wesentlich zu erleichtern, wird an Hand derSchüeppschen Unterlagen ein Diagramm zur Bestimmung des dekadischen TrübungskoeffizientenB 500 aus Messungen der Kurzstrahlung (J K , <625 nm) berechnet. Die so erhaltenen Werte vonJ K sind praktisch unabhängig vom -Exponenten der Dunstextinktion.J K -Werte fürB=0 verschiedener Autoren werden verglichen, und Trübungsgrößen verschiedener Diagramme (,T K ,B nachSchüepp) werden in Beziehung gesetzt. Es wird darauf hingewiesen, daß dieSchüepp-sche Methode bei kleinen Trübungen wahrscheinlich etwas zu hohe Werte ergibt.
Summary To simplify the determination of atmospheric turbidity by actinometric measurements with respect to theSchüepp method, a diagram has been computed from the data ofSchüepp to derive the decadic turbidity coefficientB 500 from measurements of short wave radiation (J K , <625 nm). Values ofJ K are practically independent of the -exponent of haze attenuation.J K -values forB=0 of different authors and turbidity values of different diagrams (,T K ,B Schüepp) are compared. Résumé Le calcul du trouble atmosphérique d'après les mesures actinométriques est assez compliqué selon la méthode deSchüepp ou d'autres méthodes semblables. Afin d'en faciliter notablement la détermination, l'auteur a calculé une abaque en se basant sur les données deSchüepp. Ce diagramme permet d'évaluer le coefficient de trouble atmosphérique décadaireB 500 en partant de la mesure du rayonnement à ondes courtes (J K , <625 m). Les valeurs deJ K obtenues alors sont pratiquement indépendantes de l'exposant de l'extinction due à la brume. Les valeurs deJ K pourB=0 et provenant de divers auteurs sont comparées entre elles. On a en outre établi le rapport existant entre le trouble atmosphérique calculé d'après divers diagrammes (,T K ,B Schüepp). On rend le lecteur attentif au fait que les valeurs calculées selonSchüepp sont probablement trop élevées lorsque le trouble atmosphérique est peu important.

Sensible and latent heat flux densities (H and E) were measured above a mature, 18 m deciduous forest during July and August, 1988, using the Bowen ratio-energy balance (BREB) and eddy correlation (EC) methods. EC estimates ofH and E underestimated day-time surface available energy by 11%. EC also partitioned available energy differently than BREB. for/L<0.0, EC favouredH and BREB favoured E. Practical and theoretical limitations of the BREB and EC methods above forests are discussed. The most plausible causes for the failure of EC to close the surface energy balance are a low frequency loss of flux and the failure of a single point measurement to account for the spatial dispersive flux. The most plausible causes of the EC-BREB energy partitioning anomaly are the invalidity of the BREB similarity assumption and the violation of flux-gradient diffusion assumptions in the near-field diffusion region.  相似文献

Flux densities of carbon dioxide were measured over an arid, vegetation-free surface by eddy covariance techniques and by a heat budget-profile method, in which CO2 concentration gradients were specified in terms of mixing ratios. This method showed negligible fluxes of CO2, consistent with the bareness of the experimental site, whereas the eddy covariance measurements indicated large downward fluxes of CO2. These apparently conflicting observations are in quantitative agreement with the results of a recent theory which predicts that whenever there are vertical fluxes of sensible or latent heat, a mean vertical velocity is developed. This velocity causes a mean vertical convective mass flux (= cw for CO2, in standard notation). The eddy covariance technique neglects this mean convective flux and measures only the turbulent flux c w. Thus, when the net flux of CO2 is zero, the eddy covariance method indicates an apparent flux which is equal and opposite to the mean convective flux, i.e., c w = – c w. Corrections for the mean convective flux are particularly significant for CO2 because cw and c w are often of similar magnitude. The correct measurement of the net CO2 flux by eddy covariance techniques requires that the fluxes of sensible and latent heat be measured as well.  相似文献

An analytic treatment of drag and drag partition on rough surfaces is given. The aims are to provide simple predictive expressions for practical applications, and to rationalize existing laboratory and atmospheric data into a single framework. Using dimensional analysis and two physical hypotheses, theoretical predictions are developed for total stress (described by the square root of the canopy drag coefficient), stress partition (described by the ratio S/ of the stress s on the underlying ground surface to total stress ), zero-plane displacement and roughness length. The stress partition prediction is the simple equation S/= 1/(1+), where = CRCS the ratio of element and surface drag coefficients. This prediction agrees very well with data and is free of adjustable constants. Other predictions also agree well with a range of laboratory and atmospheric data.  相似文献

A two-dimensional mesoscale soil-atmosphere model is used to simulate the triggering of atmospheric convection by horizontally varying soil water content. The variation is periodic with a wavelength between 4 and 40 km, which is considered a realistic scale for the variation of land surface characteristics. Three stages of convection can be clearly discerned: a short initial stage when convection sets in and where the size of the conective cells is determined by , a mature stage with well developed cells whose size is still determined by , and a decay/transformation stage, characterized by the formation of narrow regions of strong updrafts and wide regions of moderate downdrafts, independent of . Parameters relevant for the transition are given, and the importance of the feedback between soil and atmosphere is demonstrated. The dependence of convective parameters, e.g., height of the convective layer, vertical velocity and fluxes of heat and moisture on is investigated. The calculations of the mature stage are compared with the predictions of a linear model.  相似文献

Summary The effect of the Alpine orography on prototype cold fronts approaching from the west is investigated by three-dimensional numerical model simulations. The numerical experiments cover a range of parameter constellations which govern the prefrontal environment of the front. Especially, the appearance and intensity of prefrontal northern Alpine foehn varies from case to case.The behaviour of a cold front north of the Alps depends much on the prefrontal condition it encounters. It is found that prefrontal foehn can either accelerate or retard the approaching front.An important feature is the pressure depression along the northern Alpine rim that results from the southerly foehn flow. In cases where this depression compensates the eastward directed pressure gradient associated with the largescale flow, the front tends to accelerate and the foehn breaks down as soon as the front passes. In contrast, the foehn prevents the front from a rapid eastward propagation if it is connected with a strong southerly wind component.No-foehn experiments are performed for comparison, where either the mountains are removed, or the static stability is set to neutral. Three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) from aerosol samples were measured and compared with those reported in the literature for natural dissolved organic matter. The EEM profiles of the WSOC presented three characteristic excitation/emission (Exc/Em) peaks: 240/405 nm, 310/405 nm and 280/340 nm. The fluorescence intensities at Exc/Em240/405 nm and Exc/Em310/405 nm are located at wavelengths shorter than those reported for aquatic humic substances, indicating a smaller content of both aromatic structures and condensed unsaturated bond systems in the WSOC fraction. The EEM profiles of fractions obtained by the isolation procedure of the WSOC by the XAD resins showed that a fractionation has occurred and the XAD-8 eluate is highly representative of the total WSOC of collected aerosol. Synchronous scan spectra were more detailed than conventional fluorescence emission spectra, appearing more suitable for studying multicomponent samples such as the WSOC from atmospheric aerosols.  相似文献

Transpiration Ev and bare soil evaporation Eb processes are comparatively analysed assuming homogeneous and inhomogeneous areal distributions of volumetric soil moisture content . For a homogeneous areal distribution of we use a deterministic model, while for inhomogeneous distributions a statistical-deterministic diagnostic surface energy balance model is applied. The areal variations of are simulated by Monte-Carlo runs assuming normal distributions of .The numerical experiments are performed for loam. In the experiments we used different parameterizations for vegetation and bare soil surface resistances and strong atmospheric forcing. According to the results theEv()-Eb() differences are great, especially in dry conditions. In spite of this, the available energy flux curves of vegetation Av() and bare soil Ab() surfaces differ much less than the Ev() and Eb() curves. The results suggest that Ev is much more non-linearly related to environmental conditions than Eb. Both Ev and Eb depend on the distribution of , the wetness regime and the parameterization used. With the parameterizations, Eb showed greater variations than Ev. These results are valid when there are no advective effects or mesoscale circulation patterns and the stratification is unstable.  相似文献

In a recent paper, the author introduced a new viscous boundary layer, called the mesolayer, in turbulent shear flow. Its importance stems from its location between the inner and outer regions which are controlled by the law of the wall and Reynolds number similarity, respectively. This intrusion prevents the classical overlap assumption which appears to be fundamental in the derivation of the classical logarithmic behavior. The mesolayer has a thickness proportional to Taylor's microscale . This, and the analogy between the energy equation for the spectrum function of isotropic turbulence and the momentum equation for shear flow, suggest the existence of a similar region in wavenumber space with wavenumber k ~ -1. This mesoregion separates the inner region k ~ k s(where k s-1 and is the Kolmogorov length) and the outer region k k e(where k e -1 and l is the energy-containing eddy size) and again invalidates the overlap assumption which appears to be fundamental in the derivation of the classical k -5/3-behavior of the inertial subrange.Incorporation of the mesoregion into the argument leads to a new theory with k -5/3-behavior in two regions (-1 k k s) and (k e k -1) although with two different coefficients of proportionality (Kolmogorov constants). This leads to a wandering of the spectrum curve about the classical k -5/3 line similar to a wandering in turbulent shear flow about the logarithmic curve. This is clearly indicated by the data for the variation of the Kolmogorov constant.Other data support the new theory. In particular, the location of the point k mwhere the curve of the nonlinear energy-transfer function goes through zero shows agreement with the theory, i.e., k m-1.  相似文献

The relation between the turbulence Reynolds numberR and a Reynolds numberz* based on the friction velocity and height from the ground is established using direct measurements of the r.m.s. longitudinal velocity and turbulent energy dissipation in the atmospheric surface layer. Measurements of the relative magnitude of components of the turbulent kinetic energy budget in the stability range 0 >z/L 0.4 indicate that local balance between production and dissipation is maintained. Approximate expressions, in terms of readily measured micrometeorological quantities, are proposed for the Taylor microscale and the Kolmogorov length scale .  相似文献

Die Verschiebung der Minima der Umkehrkurven,i n /i m =f(z), erfolgtgleichsinnig mit abnehmender Wellenlänge n nach kleineren Zenitdistanzen (entgegen den Angaben vonSchein undStoll, aber in Übereinstimmung mit der Theorie nachGötz undDobson). 2. Zum ersten Mal beziehen sich hier die Angaben aufeffektive Wellenlängen, die ihrerseits noch eine Funktion vonz sind. 3. Aus den Messungen bei den kleinsten, bisher noch nicht zugänglichen Wellenlängen folgt, daß deren Streuniveaus bei tiefen Sonnenständen oberhalb der Schichten größten Ozongehaltes liegen müssen.
Summary Until now the Umkehr-effect of Götz (inversion of intensity-ratio in zenith-scattered sunlight) has been investigated only by means of photocells or Geiger counters. The application of the multiplier as measuring instrument is of greater advantage because of its much higher sensitivity. Measurements can be made with it even with the sun's zenith distancesz>90° at shorter wave-lengths and with a narrower slit of the spectrometer (better monochromasy).Results: (1) The shift of the minima of the Umkehr-curvesi n /i m =f(z), erfolgtgleichsinnig mit abnehmender Wellenlänge n shows the same sense with decreasing wave-length n to shorter zenith distances (in opposition to the assertions ofSchein andStoll, but in agreement with the theory ofGötz andDobson). (2) For the first time the statements refer here to effective wave-lengths which in their turn are a function ofz. (3) From measurements of the shortest wave-lengths which until now have not yet been accessible, it can be concluded that at low sun heights the scattering level is situated above the layers with the greatest ozone content.

Water vapour is the largest and, radiatively, the most important trace gas in the Earth's atmosphere. Cloud amount and cloud optical depth feedbacks are, as yet, poorly understood and improvements in model parameterization schemes await an adequate observational data base. Satellite retrievals do not, and will not for some time, provide more than snapshot (a few months to a few years) records. Conventional surface-based observations of cloudiness could complement the global coverage offered by satellite retrievals if a sound relationship between the two observational measurements could be found. Observations underline the importance of the vertical dimension of clouds which affects the observational geometries from satellites and the surface. A new basis for the relationship between the (vertical) earthview of cloud amount and the (whole dome) skycover of cloud amount has been sought. Over four and a half thousand all-sky camera photographs, representing a considerable range of seasonal and climatological conditions, have been analyzed to give rise to a database from which predictive relationships for earthview, E, and skycover, S, have been established.Cubic functions are the most soundly based both physically and empirically. We find: S=0.647+2.192E–0.461E 2+0.037E 3 and E=-0.001+0.082S+0.269S 2–0.019S 3 for the prediction of skycover from earthview and earthview from skycover, respectively. If earthview is required from skycover observations then ES could be used with little additional error. Hence, conventional surface observations of skycover could be compared directly with satellite-derived earthview values. More importantly, these results do not support the widespread assumption that conventional (surface) observations of cloud amount always exceed the earthview could retrieval. Furthermore, climate model predictions of total cloud amount may also be interpreted via these relationships. GCM-predicted layer cloud amounts can be synthesized into modelled E values using the random overlap formula and hence it is possible to construct modelled S values which are directly comparable with conventionally observed cloud climatologies. The baseline observation of skycover by clouds therefore provides a valuable validation tool for both satellite programmes and climate models.  相似文献

This study examines the statistical properties of the concentration derivative, , for a dispersing plume in a near-neutrally stratified atmospheric surface layer. Towards this goal, the probability density function (pdf) of , and the conditional pdf of given a fixed concentration level, , have been measured. These pdfs are found to be modeled well by a generalizedq-Gaussian (gqG) distribution with intermittency exponent,q, equal to 0.3 and 3/4, respectively. These results highlight the strong intermittency effect (patchiness) of the small-scale concentration eddy structures in the plume. The distribution of time intervals between successive high peaks in the squared derivative process, x2, is found to be well approximated by a power-law distribution, implying that occurrences of these high peaks are much more clustered than would be predicted by a Poisson or shot-noise process. The results are used to improve models for the joint pdf of and , and for the expected number of upcrossings per unit time interval of a fixed concentration level that have been proposed by Kristensenet al. (1989). The predictions of the improved models are in accord with observations, and suggest that the intercorrelation between and must be explicitly incorporated if good estimates of the upcrossing intensity are to be obtained.  相似文献

Functional forms of the universal similarity functions A, B (for wind components parallel and normal to the surface stress), and C (for potential temperature difference) are determined based on the generalized theory of the resistance laws for the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL). The similarity-profile functions for the surface layer are matched with the velocity and temperature-defect profiles that are assumed to have shapes modified by certain powers of nondimensional height z/h, where h is the PBL height. The powers of the outer-layer profile functions are determined, so that the functions become negligible in the surface layer. To close the temperature defect law, an assumption that the temperature gradient across the top of the PBL is continuous with the stratification of the overlying atmosphere is used. The result of this assumption is that nondimensional momentum and temperature profiles in the PBL can be described in terms of four basic ratios: (1) roughness ratio = /h (2) scale-height ratio =|f|h/u*, (3) ambient stratification parameter =h/*, and (4) stability parameter =h/L, where L is the Monin-Obukhov length, z0 is the surface roughness, is the upper-air stratification, u * is the friction velocity, and * is the temperature scale at the surface. For stable conditions, the scale-height ratio can be related to the atmospheric stability and the upperair stratification, and the generalized similarity and Rossby number similarity theories become identical. Under appropriate boundary conditions, function A is explicitly dependent on the stability parameter , while B is a function of scale-height ratio , which in turn depends on the stability. Function C is shown to be dependent on the stability and the upper-air stratification, due to the closure assumption used for the temperature profile.The suggested functional forms are compared with other empirical approximations by several authors. The general framework used to determine the functional forms needs to be tested against good boundary-layer measurements.  相似文献

Local similarity theory, an analogy to the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory, is successfully applied to airborne observations in a coastal area of South Australia. The boundary layer over this highly non-uniform surface is characterized by extensive variations in its thermal stratification and turbulence characteristics. However, the behaviour of some statistical parameters of second- and higher moments seems to be determined mainly by local forcing, while horizontal advection plays a less important role. For these parameters, local scaling is effective. It is shown that the dimensionless variances of vertical velocity and potential temperature are functions of z/ only, where is the local Monin-Obukhov length and z is the height above ground. The dimensionless variance of horizontal velocity components is found to depend on h/, where h is the height of the oundary layer. Similarity relationships for some triple correlations are also discussed. The empirically determined local similarity relationships are found to agree with those obtained from surface-layer similarity. Finally, to illustrate the complexity of the local forcing, distributions of vertical energy and momentum fluxes, from which the local scaling parameters are derived, are shown.  相似文献

Recent observations of flux-gradient anomalies in atmospheric flow close to forests, and similar rough surfaces, prompted a wind-tunnel investigation in which cross-wire anemometry was used to study the vertical development and horizontal variability of adiabatic flow over five regularly arrayed rough surfaces, encompassing a 32-fold range of roughness concentration . The roughness elements were cylinders, 6 mm in both height and diameter.Below a layer in which the velocity profile is semi-logarithmic, two surface influences upon the mean velocity field can be distinguished: wake diffusion and horizontal inhomogeneity. The wake diffusion effect causes non-dimensional vertical velocity gradients to be smaller than in the semi-logarithmic region; at least for elements with aspect ratios l/h 1, it is governed by the transverse dimension l of the roughness elements, and is observed when z > h + 1.5l (where z is height above the underlying surface, and h is the height of the roughness elements). A simple diffusivity model successfully describes the horizontally averaged velocity profiles in the region of wake influence, despite conceptual disadvantages. The horizontal inhomogeneity of the flow is negligible when z > h + D (D being the inter-element spacing), and does not entirely mask the wake diffusion effect except over very sparsely roughened surfaces ( 0.02). A criterion for negligibility of both effects, and hence for applicability of conventional turbulent diffusivity theory for momentum, is z > h + 1.5D. These results are compared with atmospheric data, and indicate that wake diffusion may well cause some underestimation of the zero-plane displacement d over typical vegetated surfaces.  相似文献
