Abstract. In rememberance of the death of CHARLES DARWIN 100 years ago, a review is given on his coral reef research from the point of view of present knowledge. Although during DARWIN'S time no one was aware of the changing level of the glacial sea or of the important function of the symbiotic zooxanthellae in the life of hermatypic corals, his observations and considerations on the ecology of corals and on the formation of coral reefs are relevant to this day. But of course his ideas need new causal interpretations. The origin of the different reef types can no longer be explained by subsidence alone, but by different modes biologists and geologists described during the following century. To summarize all the many existing theories, the all enclosing "theory of compensation" is put forward here in honour of this great man.  相似文献

Surface gravity waves are commonly observed to slow down and to stop at a beach without any noticeable reflection taking place. We assume that as a consequence the waves are continuously giving up their linear and angular momenta, which they carry with them, along with energy, as they propagate into gradually decreasing mean depths of water. It takes a force to cause a time rate of decrease in the linear momentum and a torque to produce a time rate of decrease in the angular momentum. Both a force and a torque operate on the shoaling waves, due to the presence of the sloping bottom, to cause the diminution of their linear and angular momenta. By Newton’s third law, action equals reaction, an equal but opposite force and torque are exerted on the bottom. No other mechanisms for transferring linear and angular momenta are included in the model. Since the force on the waves acts over a horizontal distance during shoaling, work is done on the waves and energy flux is not conserved. Bottom friction, wave interaction with a mean flow, scattering from small-scale bottom irregularities and set-up are neglected. Mass flux is conserved, which leads to a shoreward monotonic decrease in amplitude consistent with available swell data. The formula for the time-independent force on the bottom agrees qualitatively with observations in seven different ways: four for swell attenuation and three for sediment transport on beaches. Ardhuin (2006) argues against a mean force on the bottom that is not hydrostatic, mainly by using conservation of energy flux. He also applies the action balance equation to shoaling waves. Action is a difficult concept to grasp for motion in a continuum; it cannot be easily visualized, and it is not really necessary for solving the shoaling wave problem. We prefer angular momentum because it is clearly related to the observed orbital motion of the fluid particles in progressive surface waves. The physical significance of wave action for surface waves has been described recently by showing that in deep water action is equivalent to the magnitude of the wave’s orbital angular momentum (Kenyon and Sheres, 1996). Finally, Ardhuin requires that there be a significant exchange of linear momentum between shoaling waves and an unspecified mean flow, although the magnitude and direction of the exchange are not predicted. No mention is made of what happens to the orbital angular momentum during shoaling. Mass flux conservation is not stated.  相似文献

This paper addresses video tracking, the problem of following moving targets automatically over a video sequence, and brings three main contributions. First, we give a concise introduction to video tracking in computer vision, including design requirements and a review of recent techniques, with some details of selected algorithms. Second, we give an overview of 28 recent papers on subsea video tracking and related motion analysis problems, arguably capturing the state-of-the-art of subsea video tracking. We summarize key features in a comparative, at-a-glance table, and discuss this work in comparison to the state-of-the-art in computer vision. Third, we identify well-proven computer vision techniques not yet embraced by the subsea research community, suggesting useful research directions for the subsea video processing community.  相似文献

The fan is fed from the broad Rhone River delta, but only one canyon, the Petit-Rhone, has fed most of the major turbidite depositional sequences that have been mapped. Slumping of sediment from intercanyon areas on the delta slope also has provided much sediment for the fan. The lack of Recent turbidite deposition on the fan suggests that turbidite sedimentation dominates during glacial low stands of sea level, building major leveed valley sequences, while surficial slumping of the valley levee deposits and pelagic sedimentation seem to mark high stands of sea level during interglacial periods.  相似文献

Marine spatial planning (MSP) has a need for spatial delimitation and for the identification of spatial classes. This paper reports on the findings of a pilot study that was undertaken to test the development of a data informed spatial typology for the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is a comparatively shallow sea with nine adjoining countries and intense anthropogenic activities. The aim of the study was to assess the applicability and value of such a spatial typology for MSP. A spatial typology with seven different spatial classes was identified. The present paper reviews our current understanding of fault dimensions and their scaling laws, with special focus on faults in siliciclastic rocks. The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of recent research in order to identify strengths and challenges related to the way this topic is being addressed. We here investigate the statistical distributions of different fault attributes, e.g. fault length, displacement, damage zone width, core thickness at different scales and tectonic regimes. Biases related to sampling (resolution effect) and statistical visualization of data are discussed. The interrelationship between different faults attributes is addressed, e.g. fault displacement versus length, and fault core thickness and fault damage zone width. The results of this study show that global statistical relationships for fault attribute populations may not be valid, since the fault attributes at different scales behave differently and the compiled data on fault displacement-length exhibit breaks in the transition between faults at different scales, i.e. from small to medium scale faults at ∼1 m displacement and from medium to large scale faults at ∼1000 m displacement. This may also be the case for fault displacement-core thickness and fault displacement-damage zone width, as slight variation in the relationship can be observed between attribute populations derived from small- and medium-size faults at ∼1 m displacement. These differences may indicate the existence of characteristic length scales in fault populations, which could imply a hierarchical ordering of fault systems. The majority of data in our compiled database show no clear distinction between rocks from different lithologies and tectonic settings. Finally, the mechanical aspects of the processes of faulting with respect to the scaling relationships are discussed. Conceptual diagrams for the evolutionary processes of faulting at different scales based on the observed relationships on the plotted datasets of faults’ main attributes (fault displacement, length, core thickness and damage zone width) are proposed.  相似文献

This paper reviews the last two years operational deep-water performance record of two manned/unmanned tethered ROV Mantis vehicles. Deviations of the system as compared to conventional submersibles and remotely operated vehicles (ROV's) are discussed and evaluated. Applications and advantages of this system in support of deep-water operations are appraised. Results and observations concluded in this paper deal with the importance of having a man in the water, or at least available to go in the water, and also those circumstances which require a remotely operated system either for safety or total bottom time requirement. The significance of each mode of operation is examined. Observations and conclusions have been compiled from operational data collected during over 250 actual dives in deep-water work to depths of 2000 ft (sim 600m).  相似文献

The Meriadzek Terrace forms part of the continental margin in the Bay of Biscay at a depth between that of the Continental shelf and the abyssal plain. Reflection profiles show that it is bounded on either side by basement ridges with a sediment infill between the ridges. It was probably formed by downfaulting of the continental shelf, possibly connected with the opening of the Bay of Biscay.  相似文献

海洋浮游纤毛虫是海洋微食物环的重要组成部分,同时也是连接海洋微食物环和经典食物链的重要环节。研究海洋浮游纤毛虫的摄食情况对了解海洋浮游纤毛虫在海洋浮游生态系统物质循环和能量流动中的作用有重要意义。主要研究内容包括纤毛虫的食性、纤毛虫对不同饵料的摄食强度(摄食率、清滤率)和选择性、影响摄食的因素及摄食后的同化和排遗。海洋浮游纤毛虫食性的研究方法主要有两种,分别为体内饵料颗粒法和维持生长法。实验室内估算纤毛虫摄食率和清滤率主要有两种方法,分别为饵料浓度差减法和体内饵料颗粒增多法。可以用特定体积清滤率和特定生物量摄食率来比较不同种纤毛虫的清滤率和摄食率。已有研究结果表明,纤毛虫的饵料包括较小的纤毛虫、硅藻、甲藻、鞭毛虫、聚球藻、原绿球藻和细菌等。纤毛虫的摄食率范围为0.1—920 cells/(ciliate h),清滤率范围为0—110μL/(ciliate h)。纤毛虫对饵料的粒径和化学性质均有选择性。饵料浓度、温度、光线、扰动以及纤毛虫所处的生长阶段都会对纤毛虫的摄食率产生影响。不同种类纤毛虫对不同种类饵料的同化率(67%—79%)和消化时间(13.7 min—24 h)不同。  相似文献
