When planetary accretion proceeds in the gas disk-solar nebula, a protoplanet attracts surrounding gas to form a distended H2-He atmosphere. The blanketing effect of the atmosphere, hampering the escape of accretional energy, enhances the surface temperature of planets. Furthermore, evaporation of ice or reduction of surface silicate and metallic oxide can supply a huge amount of water vapor into the atmosphere, which would raise the temperature and promote evaporation. Evaporated materials can be efficiently conveyed outward by vigorous convection, and condensed dust particles should keep the atmosphere opaque during accretion. The size of this opaque atmosphere dust blob is defined by the gravitational radius, which exceeds 3 × 108 m when the planetary mass is the Earth's mass (5.97 × 1024 kg). This is larger than the radii of present Jovian planets and so-called brown dwarfs. The expected lifetime of dust blobs is 106–107 yr, which is longer than that of the later gas accreting and cooling stages of Jovian planets. The number of dust blobs could exceed that of Jovian planets. If the gas disk is rather transparent, the possibility of observing such objects with a distended atmosphere may be higher than that of detecting Jovian planets. The ionosphere of Jupiter's satellite Io, discovered by the Pioneer 10 radio-occultation experiment, cannot easily be understood in terms of a model of a gravitationally bound, Earth-like ionosphere. Io's gravitational field is so weak that a gravitationally bound ionosphere would probably be blown away by the ram force of the Jovian magnetospheric wind — i.e., the plasma corotating in the Jovian magnetosphere. We propose here a model in which the material for Io's atmosphere and ionosphere is drawn from the ionosphere of Jupiter through a Birkeland current system that is driven by the potential induced across Io by the Jovian corotation electric field. We argue that the ionization near Io is caused by a comet-like interaction between the corotating plasma and Io's atmosphere. The initial interaction employs the critical velocity phenomenon proposed many years ago by Alfvén. Further ionization is produced by the impact of Jovian trapped energetic electrons, and the ionization thus created is swept out ahead of Io in its orbit. Thus, we suggest that what has been reported as a day-night ionospheric asymmetry is in fact an upstream-downstream asymmetry caused by the Jovian magnetospheric wind.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30th May, 1978.  相似文献

A full three-dimensional, numerical model is used to study the modulation of Jovian and Galactic electrons from 1 MeV to 50 GeV, and from the Earth into the heliosheath. For this purpose the very local interstellar spectrum and the Jovian electron source spectrum are revisited. It is possible to compute the former with confidence at kinetic energies \(E < 50~\mbox{MeV}\) since Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause in 2012 at \(\sim 122~\mbox{AU}\), measuring Galactic electrons at these energies. Modeling results are compared with Voyager 1 observations in the outer heliosphere, including the heliosheath, as well as observations at or near the Earth from the ISSE3 mission, and in particular the solar minimum spectrum from the PAMELA space mission for 2009, also including data from Ulysses for 1991 and 1992, and observations above 1 MeV from SOHO/EPHIN. Making use of the observations at or near the Earth and the two newly derived input functions for the Jovian and Galactic electrons respectively, the energy range over which the Jovian electrons dominate the Galactic electrons is determined so that the intensity of Galactic electrons at Earth below 100 MeV is calculated. The differential intensity for the Galactic electrons at Earth for \(E = 1~\mbox{MeV}\) is \(\sim 4\) electrons \(\mbox{m}^{-2}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}\,\mbox{sr}^{-1}\,\mbox{MeV}^{-1}\), whereas for Jovian electrons it is \(\sim 350\) electrons \(\mbox{m}^{-2}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}\,\mbox{sr}^{-1}\,\mbox{MeV}^{-1}\). At \(E = 30~\mbox{MeV}\) the two intensities are the same; above this energy the Jovian electron intensity quickly subsides so that the Galactic intensity completely dominates. At 6 MeV, in the equatorial plane the Jovian electrons dominate but beyond \(\sim 15~\mbox{AU}\) the Galactic intensity begins to exceed the Jovian intensity significantly.  相似文献

The following physical parameters have been computed for the Jovian atmosphere between 270 and ?300 km: (1) Pressure, (2) Density, (3) Speed and sound, (4) Number density, (5) Density scale. It has considered that the top of the clouds is at 0 km. For the calculations of these parameters we have used:
  1. for the altitudes 270-0 km data from Voyager I and II.
  2. for the altitudes ?300–0 km data from Voyager II and spectroscopic observations.

The forthcoming collision by debris of P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet with Jupiter during the week of July 18, 1994 has generated considerable scientific and public interest. This collision may release an amount of energy ranging from 1025-1031 ergs in the Jovian atmosphere. Two possible phenomena associated with this event are described in this Letter to the Editor. The first one is the likely display of deformed Jovian magnetic field lines as the comet interacts with the Jovian magnetosphere. The second one is electromagnetic radiation outbursts during comet explosions over a wide frequency range from radio up to gamma ray emissions. If relativistic electrons with energies up to ~ 1000 MeV could be produced during comet explosions, then synchrotron radiations with frequencies from radio up to infrared range could be detectable. Hard X-rays and gamma rays could be produced by bremsstrahlung and inverse Compton processes. Since one cannot exclude the possible transient presence of relativistic electrons with Lorentz factor 2 × 106, synchrotron radiation component might even be extended into gamma ray frequency range during intermittent short time intervals.  相似文献

Existing models of the solar atmosphere predict a limb brightening in the far infrared wavelengths. At shorter wavelengths this effect is confined to the extreme limb but at 25 it extends inward from the limb to cos = 0.3. Observations of I()/I(1.0) were made with the McMath Solar Telescope through atmospheric windows at 10.4, 17.9, 20.4, and 24.2 microns, respectively. The measurements, after having been smoothed, are compared with the theoretical predictions taking into account the diffraction pattern of the telescope. We analyzed transient Ca ii H brightening associated with small-scale canceling magnetic features (CMFs) in the quiet Sun near disk center using Ca ii H filter images and Na D1 magnetograms of Hinode/SOT. We found that in most Ca ii brightening events related to CMFs the Ca ii H intensity peaks after the magnetic flux cancellation. Moreover, the brightening tends to appear as a pair of bright points of similar size and brightness overlying a magnetic bipole. Then a new opposite polarity fragment moves to them and cancels out. These results imply that magnetic reconnection takes place there and is responsible for CMFs.  相似文献

Spectroheliograms were obtained in bands centred at 1.2 mm, 0.8 mm and 0.4 mm wavelength during 1969 and 1971. In order to obtain photometrically valid data, a specialized set of reduction techniques was employed, obviating the effects of severe differential attenuation across the disc by atmospheric water vapour and of emission noise from the atmosphere, before taking out the instrumental spread functions of the telescope and detector.Comparison of our maps with those of other observers at 3 mm and 8.6 mm wavelength suggests that the chromospheric brightness temperature increments above active regions show a monotonic increase with increasing height above the photosphere over the normal increase in brightness temperature in the quiet chromosphere. Within the limit of angular resolution of 3 available, no evidence was recorded of normal limb brightening in our three passbands but the presence of isophotes at 50% of the central disc temperature consistently circumscribing the optical limb implies a narrow spike of sub-millimetre brightening close to the limb.  相似文献

The Galilean satellite eclipse technique for measuring the aerosol distribution in the upper Jovian atmosphere is described and applied using 30 color observations of the 13 May 1972 eclipse of Ganymede obtained with the 5-m Hale telescope. This event probes the South Temperate Zone. The observed aerosol lies above the visible cloud tops, is very tenuous and varies with altitude, increasing rapidly with downward passage through the tropopause. The aerosol extinction coefficient, κa (λ1.05 μm), is ~1.1 × 10?9 cm?1 in the lower stratosphere and ~1.1 × 10?8 cm?1 at the tropopause. The 1σ uncertainty in these values does not exceed 50% The observations require some aerosol above the tropopause but do not clearly determine its structure. The present analysis emphasizes an extended haze distribution, but the alternate possibility is not excluded that the stratospheric aerosol resides in a thin layer. The aerosol extinction increases with decreasing wavelength and indicates the particle radius to be ?0.2 μm. Larger radii are impossible. These overall results confirm Axel's (1972) suggestion of a small quantity of dust above the Jovian cloud tops and the optical depths are consistent with those required to explain the low uv albedo.  相似文献

The brightness distribution of the quiet Sun at 8.6 mm wavelength is synthesized from off-meridian observations using an eight element east-west interferometer with a maximum base line of 16.38 m (1913). The observed brightness distribution is practically flat from the disk center to the optical limb. The effective radius of the nearly uniform component is 1.01 R . If the limb brightening is present, the brightening located between 0.95 R and 1.01 R , and the total flux density of the limb brightening is less than 1% of the total flux density of the Sun. In addition to the nearly uniform component there exists a coronal component just outside the optical limb.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the formation, kinetics, and transport of hot oxygen atoms in the atmosphere of the Jovian satellite Europa. Atmospheric sources of suprathermal oxygen atoms are assumed to be represented by the processes of dissociation of molecular oxygen, which is the main component of the atmosphere, by solar UV radiation and electron fluxes from the inner magnetosphere of Jupiter, as well as by the reaction of dissociative recombination of the main ionospheric ion O 2 + which thermal electrons. It is shown that dissociation in Europa’s near-surface atmosphere is balanced by the processes of the loss of atomic oxygen due to the effective escape of suprathermal oxygen atoms into the inner magnetosphere of Jupiter along the orbit of Europa and due to ionization by magnetospheric electrons and catalytic recombination of oxygen atoms on the icy surface of the satellite. It thus follows that atomic oxygen is only a small admixture to the main atmospheric component—molecular oxygen—in the near-surface part of the atmosphere. However, the outer exospheric layers of Europa’s atmosphere are populated mostly by suprathermal oxygen atoms. The near-surface molecular envelope of Europa is therefore surrounded by a tenuous extended corona of hot atomic oxygen.  相似文献

Comet Hale-Bopp is, without doubt, one of the most important objects for cometary science which has ever been observed. The light curve is well-observed from a heliocentric distance 7.2 AU and some information is available at distances as great as 17 AU. This allows the photometric evolution of the comet to be studied as different volatiles dominate the activity. Three different phases of activity are seen as the heliocentric distance reduces during 1996: the initial phase of very fast brightening, characterized by a r –5 law; a standstill in the light curve when the brightening law reduced to r –1, which coincides with the initiation of water sublimation at r ~ 4 AU; and a further phase of more rapid brightening with an r –3.5 law, similar to the mean for comets classed as fairly new, which initiated at r ~ 4 AU.  相似文献

Based on photospheric vector magnetograms obtained at Huairou Solar Observing Station (HSOS), non-potential characteristics of the magnetic field beneath the filament in active region NOAA 9077 are investigated. We focus on the structure and evolution of the magnetic field from 00:08 UT to 10:25 UT of 14 July before the Bastille event. Particular attention is paid to transverse field strength, shear degree and horizontal gradient of the line-of-sight magnetic field around the filament and filament channel. The following characteristics are found. (1) The magnetic non-potentiality has an obviously non-uniform distribution. The shear degree of the transverse field (Hagyard et al., 1984) is very large, up to 75° in some sites beneath the filament, such as the initial brightening site in TRACE 1600 Å images and the breaking site of the filament. The transverse field and the horizontal gradient of the line-of-sight field are very large in some parts corresponding to the hottest and continuously brightening portions. (2) The mean strength and mean shear angle of the transverse field and mean horizontal gradient of the line-of-sight field have obviously dropped in most parts beneath the filament for two hours before the filament eruption and onset of the X5.7/3B flare. After comparing simultaneous UV and EUV images, H filtergrams and Dopplergrams at solar atmosphere, we suggest that magnetic cancellation is likely to quickly transport the magnetic energy and complexity into the higher atmosphere in these two hours. This leads to magnetic instability in the filament and eventually causes the eruption of filament and onset of the flare.  相似文献

We discuss the life-story of a transequatorial loop system which interconnected the newly born active region McMath 12474 with the old region 12472. The loop system was probably born through reconnection accomplished 1.5 to 5 days after the birth of 12474 and the loops were observed in soft X-rays for at least 1.5 days. Transient sharpenings of the interconnection and a striking brightening of the whole loop system for about 6 hr appear to be caused by magnetic field variations in the region 12474. A flare might have been related to the brightening, but only in an indirect way: the same emerging flux could have triggered the flare and at the same time strengthened the magnetic field at the foot-points of the loops. Electron temperature in the loop system, equal to 2.1 × 106 K in its quiet phase, increased to 3.1 × 106 K during the brightening. Electron density in the loop system was 1.3 × 109 cm–3 and it could be estimated to 7 × 108 cm–3 prior to the brightening. During the brightening the loops became twisted. There was no obvious effect whatsoever of the activity in 12474 upon the in erconnected old region. The final decay of the loop system reflected the decay of magnetic field in the region 12474.  相似文献

Near simultaneous coronal EUV images were used to show that the He ii 304 network brightening is independent of coronal EUV radiation. We studied the quantitative relation between the intensity of He ii 304 network brightening with the associated magnetic elements. An almost linear relationship was found between the He ii 304 network brightening and the magnetic field for a field strength higher than 10 G with exceptions at neutral lines and in the intra-network. We also calculated the most probable formation height of He ii 304 network elements using the potential extrapolation of the photospheric magnetic field. The results show that He ii 304 network elements form at or around 3000 km above the height of the layer at which the sources of magnetic flux are deployed.  相似文献

Modeling of the Jovian atmosphere shows that cosmic ray induced albedo neutron decay is inadequate to account for Pioneer 10 and 11 projected electron levels on Jupiter. High energy solar protons must also be excluded as an important neutron decay source. Analysis of neutron flux data near the top of the Jovian atmosphere can lead to the determination of He/H2 and3He/4He ratios for the Jovian atmosphere.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the dynamics of the electrostatic disruption products of fragile interplanetary dust aggregates which are initially electrically charged on entering the Jovian plasmasphere. On account of their large specific charges, these small dust fragments are strongly effected both by the Lorentz electric force as well as by the polarization electric force resulting from the corotation of the Jovian plasmasphere. The detailed orbits of these charged dust fragments, which are shown to be confined to the equatorial plane, are computed for various launch angles. It is established that the fragments with radii typically around 1 are magneto-gravitationally trapped within the plasma sphere due to the velocity induced oscillation of their surface potentials. The spatial distribution of these fragments are evaluated and the time evolution of the distributions followed. On this basis it is argued that the distribution of micrometeoroid dust within the Jovian magnetospheres, observed by the Pioneer 10 and the recent Voyager spacecraft, is a result of this magneto-gravitational trapping and subsequent orbital evolution of these charged dust fragments. Our discussion includes both the sudden increase, by over an order of magnitude, of the micrometeoroid dust flux at about 30R J observed by Pioneer 10, and the thin inner dust ring recently observed by the Voyaer spacecraft. The observed brightness asymmetries between the leading and trailing sides of the Galilean satellites appears to be a natural consequence of the impact geometries of these charged dust grains with the satellite surfaces.  相似文献

Observations of the intensity distribution near the solar limb at 2.43 and 22.5 , show the absence of limb brightening to within 1 or 2 arc sec of the limb. Observations at 1.2 mm indicate limb brightening at this wavelength. These results are compared with the Utrecht Reference Photosphere and with existing data on the solar flux in the millimeter range, and suggest that the temperature minimum is broad and extends above 5000 = 2 × 10–3. A sharp rise of temperature is required above 5000 = 10–5.  相似文献
