In the Jupiter-Saturn region of the nebular disk, grains accumulated to form planetary cores. When the masses of planetary cores increased to the order of 1025 grams, they started to accrete gas, and around the cores were gradually formed flat rotating gaseous envelopes. When grains and small ice particles entered the gaseous envelopes, the bulk fell into the cores, but a small part had the e, i values of their orbits decreased because of gas drag, and formed around the cores very flat planetesimal disks, from which regular satellites were later formed. The gaseous envelopes finally collapsed to become the intermediate layers and the outer layers of Jupiter and Saturn. Owing to the increase in the masses of central bodies, the orbits of the regular satellites contracted to a fraction of their original dimensions, the satellite nearest Saturn fell inside the Roche Limit, and broke up to form the rings of Saturn. No gaseous envelope was formed around Uranus. A residual large planetesimal with about 5% of Uranus' mass collided with Uranus, causing Uranus to rotate in its present peculiar fashion, and also causing the ejection of large amounts of matter. Part of this matter revolved around Uranus in its equatorial plane, cooled and condensed rather rapidly, formed the five satellites and the ring system which has recently been discovered.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze the results of ground-based and space-born photometric observations of the major satellites of Uranus—Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. All sets of photometric observations of the satellites available in the literature were examined for uniformity and systematic differences and summarized to a unified set by wavelength ranging from 0.25 to 2.4 μm. This set covers the interval of phase angles from 0.034° to 35°. The compound phase curves of brightness of the satellites in the spectral bands at 0.25, 0.41, 0.48, 0.56, 0.75, 0.91, 1.4, and 1.8 μm, which include a pronounced opposition surge and linear part, were constructed. For each satellite, the geometric albedo was found in different spectral bands taking into account the brightness opposition effect, and its spectral dependence was studied. It has been shown that the reflectance of the satellites linearly depends on the wavelength at different phase angles, but has different spectral gradients. The parameters of the phase functions of brightness, including the amplitude and the angular width of the brightness opposition surge, the phase coefficient, and the phase angle at which the nonlinear increase in brightness starts, were determined and their dependences on wavelength and geometric albedo were analyzed. Our investigations show that, in their optical properties, the satellites Miranda and Ariel, Titania and Oberon, and Umbriel present three types of surfaces. The observed parameters of the brightness opposition effect for the Uranian satellites, some ice satellites of Jupiter and Saturn, and the E-and S-type asteroids are analyzed and compared within the framework of the coherent backscattering and mutual shadowing mechanisms.  相似文献

We report the discovery of four new uranian irregular satellites in our deep, mR∼25.4, optical search around that planet. The orbital properties of these satellites are diverse. There is some grouping of inclinations and one of the satellites appears to be inside the Kozai resonant zone of Uranus. Further, we find that the differential size distribution of satellites is rather shallow compared to objects in the asteroid and Kuiper belts, going as ∼r−2.4. We also report a strong coupling between semi-major axis and orbital eccentricity. We comment on the apparent paradox between the inclination grouping, shallow size distribution, and orbital correlation as they relate to the likelihood of a collisional origin for the uranian irregulars. The currently observed irregulars appear to be consistent with a disruptive formation process and a collisional origin for Uranus' obliquity.  相似文献

New JHK photometry and spectrometry (1.4–2.6 μm) are presented for Enceladus, Hyperion, Phoebe, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. From spectral signatures, mainly in the 2-μm region, water ice is verified on Enceladus and identified on Hyperion and the three Uranian satellites. The JHK photometry shows that Phoebe is different from all other satellites and asteroids observed thus far. The new photometry corroborates the earlier conclusion by Cruikshank et al. (1977) Astrophys. J217, 1006–1010] that the Uranian satellites, as a class, have overall surface reflectances different from other water-ice-covered satellites, and the reason for the difference remains unclear. The diameters and the masses of the Uranian satellites are reviewed in light of the probable high albedo representative of ice-covered surfaces and the new dynamical studies by Greenberg, 1975, Greenberg, 1976, Greenberg, 1978.  相似文献

New spectrophotometry from 1.5 to 2.5 μm is reported for the Uranian satellites Titania, Oberon, and Umbriel. A spectrum of the rings of Uranus from 2.0 to 2.4 μm is also reported. No evidence is found for frost covering the surface of the ring material, consistent with the low albedo of the rings (PK = 0.03) previously reported by Nicholson and Jones (1980). The surfaces of the satellites are found to be covered by dirty water frost. Assuming albedos of the frost and gray components covering the Uranian satellites to be the same as the light and dark faces of Iapetus, radii are derived that are roughly twice those inferred from the assumption of a visual albedo of 0.5.  相似文献

Control networks of the five large satellites of Uranus have been established photogrammetrically from pictures taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. The control networks cover the illuminated southern hemisphere of each satellite. Coordinates are listed for 103 points on Miranda, 52 points on Ariel, 43 points on Umbriel, 46 points on Titania, and 34 points on Oberon; some points are identified on the U.S. Geological Survey maps of these satellites. Miranda is ellipsoidal in shape with radii of 241, 235 and 232 km. Mean radii are 579 km for Ariel, 586 km for Umbriel, 790 km for Titania, and 762 km for Oberon.  相似文献

Data on three recently discovered satellites of Uranus are used to determine basic evolutional parameters of their orbits: the extreme eccentricities and inclinations, as well as the circulation periods of the pericenter arguments and of the longitudes of the ascending nodes. The evolution is mainly investigated by analytically solving Hill’s double-averaged problem for the Uranus-Sun-satellite system, in which Uranus’s orbital eccentricity e U and inclination i U to the ecliptic are assumed to be zero. For the real model of Uranus’s evolving orbit with e U≠0 and i U≠0, we refine the evolutional parameters of the satellite orbits by numerically integrating the averaged system. Having analyzed the configuration and dynamics of the orbits of Uranus’s five outer satellites, we have revealed the possibility of their mutual crossings and obtained approximate temporal estimates.  相似文献

Workers in the field of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) have been interested in the hypothesis that observed solar activities can be utilized in a deterministic way to predict the bulk flow consequences of these activities in the three-dimensional heliosphere. Exploration of this hypothesis, using the conventional/classic initial boundary value approach, will be reviewed against the background of basic, ideal (except for shocks) one-fluid approximations. This work has been divided into two parts: near-Sun simulations in two dimensions of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) as well as interplanetary simulations in 2D and 3D of propagating shocks. In the latter case, the flows behind the shocks should be thought of as interplanetary ICMEs, i.e., the interplanetary, evolutionary consequences of the near-Sun simulations.Initialization of these simulations has been based on observations (optical, soft X-ray, radio) from both ground-and space-based instruments. Simulation outputs have been compared within situ plasma and field observations and interplanetary scintillations (IPS). Improvements in the initialization procedures — spatial/temporal variations of solar plasma and field parameters at the coronal base — are expected from YOHKOH, SOHO, CORONAS-I, and TRACE experiments. Ground truth observations from WIND, SOHO, ACE, and INTERBALL experiments should then be compared with three-dimensional MHD outputs in tests of the fluid hypothesis noted above.  相似文献

The problem of the secular perturbations of the orbit of a test satellite with a negligible mass caused by the joint influence of the oblateness of the central planet and the attraction by its most massive (or main) satellites and the Sun is considered. In contrast to the previous studies of this problem, an analytical expression for the full averaged perturbing function has been derived for an arbitrary orbital inclination of the test satellite. A numerical method has been used to solve the evolution system at arbitrary values of the constant parameters and initial elements. The behavior of some set of orbits in the region of an approximately equal influence of the perturbing factors under consideration has been studied for the satellite system of Uranus on time scales of the order of tens of thousands of years. The key role of the Lidov–Kozai effect for a qualitative explanation of the absence of small bodies in nearly circular equatorial orbits with semimajor axes exceeding ~1.8 million km has been revealed.  相似文献

On August 11, 2004, we made adaptive optics observations of the Uranus and Neptune systems with the Keck II Near Infrared Camera. Uranus and Triton were observed in three broadband filters (J, H, and K-prime) and four narrowband filters [Hcont, FeII, He1_B, and H2(v=1-0)]. Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, and Oberon were observed in the four narrowband filters only. To achieve the highest possible photometric accuracy, and thus the tightest possible constraints on atmospheric aerosol models and gas mixing ratios, we used aperture photometry that accounted for the dependence of point-spread functions and growth curves on the adaptive optics reference object, and accounted for recently determined phase curves of each object. The satellite albedos we determined were compared with published relative spectra to verify the relative consistency of our observations, which were subsequently used to convert published relative spectra to absolute spectra. We used these absolute spectra and synthetic photometry methods to compare published values in dissimilar photometric systems to each other and to our observations. We find our satellite albedos in best agreement with photometry from Karkoschka [Karkoschka, E., 2001. Icarus 151, 51-68], which is the best characterized and most contemporaneous data set. Our estimated absolute accuracy of 5% to 8% is consistent with these intercomparisons. We obtained the following ring-subtracted and discrete feature-free albedos of Uranus: J: (1.66±0.07)×10−2, H: (1.09±0.05)×10−2, K: (2.08±0.15)×10−4, Hcont: (3.71±0.23)×10−2, FeII: (1.14±0.07)×10−3, He1_B: (2.06±0.16)×10−4, and H2: (1.27±0.10)×10−4.  相似文献

Scientific progress on the topic of energy, mass, and momentum transport from the Sun into the heliosphere is contingent upon interdisciplinary and international cooperative efforts on the part of many workers. Summarized here is a report of some highlights of research carried out during the SMY/SMA by the STIP (Study of Travelling Interplanetary Phenomena) Project that included solar and interplanetary scientists around the world. These highlights are concerned with coronal mass ejections from solar flares or erupting prominences (sometimes together); their large-scale consequences in interplanetary space (such as shocks and magnetic bubbles); and energetic particles and their relationship to these large-scale structures. It is concluded that future progress is contingent upon similar international programs assisted by real-time (or near-real-time) warnings of solar activity by cooperating agencies along the lines experienced during the SMY/SMA.  相似文献

Results of the observations of mutual eclipses of Galilean satellites observed from the Vainu Bappu Observatory during 1985 are presented. Theoretical models assuming a uniform disc, Lambert’s law and Lommel-Seeliger’s law describing the scattering characteristics of the surface of the eclipsed satellite were used to fit the observations. Light curves of the 1E2 event on 1985 September 24 and the 3E1 event on 1985 October 24 observed from VBO and published light curves of the 1E2 event on 1985 September 14, the 3E1 event on 1985 September 26 and the 2E1 event on 1985 October 28 (Arlotet al 1989) were fitted with theoretical light curves using Marquardt’s algorithm. The best fitting was obtained using Lommel-Seeliger’s law to describe the scattering over the surface of Io and Europa. During the fitting, a parameterδxshift which shifts the theoretical light curve along the direction of relative motion of the eclipsed satellite with respect to the shadow centre, on the sky plane (as seen from the Sun) was determined along with the impact parameter. In absence of other sources like prominent surface features or non perfect sky conditions which could lead to asymmetric light curves,δxshift would be a measure of the phase correction (Aksnes, Franklin & Magnusson 1986) with an accuracy as that of the midtime. Heliocentric Δα cos (δ) and gDδ at mid times derived from fitted impact parameters are reported  相似文献

Interplanetary scintillation and spacecraft measurements of proton density are observed to be strongly correlated. This result confirms the association between corotating sectors of enhanced scintillation and compression regions located at the interface between fast and slow solar wind streams; it also suggests that scintillation observations provide a means of predicting, several days in advance, the arrival at the Earth, of solar plasma of enhanced density.  相似文献

We present the first Earth-based images of several of the individual faint rings of Uranus, as observed with the adaptive optics system on the W.M. Keck II telescope on four consecutive days in October 2003. We derive reflectivities based on multiple measurements of 8 minor moons of Uranus as well as Ariel and Miranda in filters centered at wavelengths of 1.25(J), 1.63(H), and 2.1(Kp) μm. These observations have a phase angle of 1.84°-1.96°. We find that the small satellites are somewhat less bright than in observations made by the HST at smaller phase angles, confirming an opposition surge effect. We calculate albedoes for the ring groups and for each ring separately. We find that the ε ring particles, as well as the particles in the three other ring groups, have albedoes near 0.043 at these phase angles. The equivalent depths of some of the individual rings are different than predicted based upon ring widths from occultation measurements (assuming a constant particle ring brightness); in particular the γ ring is fainter and the η ring brighter than expected. Our results indicate that q, the ratio of ε ring intensity at apoapse vs. periapse, is close to 3.2±0.16. This agrees well with a model that has a filling factor for the ε ring of 0.06 (Karkoschka, 2001, Icarus 151, 78-83). We also determine values of the north to south brightness ratio for the individual rings and find that in most cases they are close to unity.  相似文献

The occultation of KME 17 by Uranus and its rings was observed with the 1.8-m telescope at SAAO through a K filter with an InSb detector on 25 March 1983. Immersion of the nine main rings and the emersion of rings, 5, 4, α, and β were recorded in the nonchopping mode. A diffracted square-well model was fitted to the data, and the midtime, width, and equivalent depth were determined for each profile. The profile model also includes the diameter of the occulted star as a free parameter, and an average of the narrow ring results yields 0.096 ± 0.005 milliarcsec for the angular diameter of KME 17, under the assumption of a fully darkened disk. The immersion and emersion atmospheric events give mean temperatures of 166 ± 15 and 149 ± 15°K within the pressure altitude range 1–10 μbar. Photometry in the JHKL bands for KME 17 and other stars previously occulted by the Uranian rings is presented.  相似文献

The image-processing techniques used by Peng et al. are further improved to measure precisely the positions of Saturn and its satellites. 495 CCD images taken with the 1-m telescope at the Yunnan Observatory during the years 2002–2004 are processed with these techniques. These measured pixel positions are compared to their theoretical positions computed with the ephemerides of TASS1.7 for the satellites and JPL DE405 for Saturn itself. Analysis of the data for the intersatellite positions among four bright Saturnian satellites (S3–S6) and for Saturn–satellite (i.e. Saturn–Titan) positions shows that these measured positions have the same dispersions, i.e. about 0.05 and 0.06 arcsec in right ascension and declination, respectively. However, for the fainter satellites, Enceladus and Mimas, poorer residuals up to 0.1 and 0.2 arcsec, respectively, in both directions are found mainly due to their small separations from the primary planet and short exposure time in order to obtain useful images of Saturn.  相似文献

The Principle of Least Interaction Action, which explains the observed preference in the Solar System for two-satellite resonant configurations, is shown to apply also to the Laplacean satellites of Jupiter and Uranus, in the sense that these triplet resonant structures lie close to configurations for which the time-mean of the action associated with the mutual interaction of the satellites is an overall minimum. Far from the minimum configuration, significant changes take place in the major semi-axes on time-scales ~106-107y. Both systems require times ~108 y to come close to the minimum configuration; to approach resonance to the observed precision of the Laplace relationship (3×10?4 for the Uranian case, 2×10?7 for the Jovian case) requires, for both systems, a time closely comparable with the age of the solar system.  相似文献

Observations of an occultation of Europa by Io are fitted by a model light curve. The model has five free parameters, namely the radius of Europa, the impact parameter, the brightness ratio of the satellites, the time of midevent and the mean relative velocity. The model assumes a fixed value for the radius of Io and for the solar phase angle α, and that Europa has a uniform surface brightness. The OC residuals of the best fitting light curve are very small (~0.002 mag) and of a purely random nature; there is no evidence of albedo features. Taking α = 0 does not affect significantly the quality of the fit. Six mutual eclipses were also observed, and their times of minima agree well with the predictions of Aksnes Icarus21 (1974). For two events these predictions differ by about 20 min from those of Brinkmann and Millis Sky & Telescope45 (1973).  相似文献
