Palaeomagnetic studis on oriented samples from two sequences of olivine basalt lava flows on the island of Réunion together record the Réunion normal polarity event within the Matuyama reversed polarity epoch. Detailed K?Ar dating of the lavas indicates that the Réunion event has a mean age 2.02±0.02 my with a duration estimated to lie within the range 10,000 to 50,000 yr. This could explain the rarity of detection of the event in deep sea sedimentary cores.  相似文献

The paleosecular variation (PSV) and polarity transitions are two major features of the Earth’s magnetic field. Both PSV and reversal studies are limited when age of studied units is poorly constrained. This is a case of Central and western Mexico volcanics. Although many studies have been devoted to these crucial problems and more than 200 paleomagnetic directions are available for the last 5 Ma, only few sites were dated directly. This paper presents new paleomagnetic results from seventeen independent cooling units in the Michoacán-Guanajuato Volcanic Field (MGVF) in western Mexico. Twelve sites are directly dated by 40Ar/39Ar or K-Ar methods and span from 2.78 to 0.56 Ma. The characteristic paleodirections are successfully isolated for 15 lava flows. The mean paleodirection (inclination I and declination D) obtained in this study is I = 28.8°, D = 354.9°, and Fisherian statistical parameters are k = 28, α95 = 7.3°, N=15, which corresponds to the mean paleomagnetic pole position Plat = 83.9°, Plong = 321.6°, K = 34, A95 = 6.6°. The paleodirections obtained in present study compiled with those, previously reported from the MGVF, are practically undistinguishable from the expected Plio-Quaternary paleodirections. The paleosecular variation is estimated through the study of the scatter of the virtual geomagnetic poles giving SF = 15.9 with SU =21.0 and SL = 12.7 (upper and lower limits respectively). These values agree reasonably well with the recent statistical Models. The oldest sites analyzed (the Santa Teresa and Cerro Alto) yield normal polarity magnetizations as expected for the cooling units belonging to the Gauss geomagnetic Chron. The interesting feature of the record comes from lava flows dated at about 2.35 Ma with clearly defined normal directions. This may point out the possible existence of a normal polarity magnetization in the Matuyama reversed Chron older than the Reunion and may be correlated to Halawa event interpreted as the Cryptochron C2r.2r-1. Another important feature of the geomagnetic record obtained from the MGVF is the evidence of fully reversed geomagnetic field within Bruhnes Chron, at about 0.56 Ma corresponding to the relative paleointensity minimum of global extent found in marine sediments at about 590 ka.  相似文献

The lava section in the Troodos ophiolite, Cyprus, is chemically stratified and divided into a shallow lava sequence with low TiO2 content and a deeper lava sequence with high TiO2 content. We calculate the viscosity at magmatic temperature based on major element chemistry of lavas in Cyprus Crustal Study Project (CCSP) Holes CY-1 and 1A. We find that typical shallow low-Ti lavas have a magmatic viscosity that is two to three orders of magnitude lower than that of the deeper high-Ti lavas. This implies that, after eruption on-axis, Troodos low-Ti lavas would have been able to flow down the same slope faster and farther than high-Ti lavas. The calculated lava viscosity increases systematically from the lava-sediment interface to the bottom of the composite Hole CY-1/1A. This suggests that an efficient process of lava segregation by viscosity on the upper flanks of the paleo Troodos rise may have been responsible for the chemical stratification in the Troodos lava pile. Calculated magmatic temperature and molar Mg/(Mg+Fe), or Mg#, decrease systematically down-section, while SiO2 content increases. Correlation of Mg# in the lavas with Mg# in the underlying, lower crustal plutonic rocks sampled by CCSP Hole CY-4 shows that the shallow lavas came from a high-temperature, lower crustal magma reservoir which is now represented by high-Mg# pyroxenite cumulates, while the deeper lavas were erupted from a lower-temperature, mid-crustal reservoir which is now represented by gabbroic cumulates with lower Mg#.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic and palaeontological studies on samples withdrawn from a 250-m-long unorientated core from Reggio di Calabria, Italy (38°N, 16°E) are described. The lower 200 m of core penetrated off-shore clays and visual examination of the split sections of core indicated no obvious breaks in deposition. After alternating field demagnetization in 200 Oe the palaeomagnetic inclination log shows the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary at 110 m below which the Jaramillo and Olduvai Events within the Matuyama Epoch are identified. This interpretation of the magnetostratigraphy is supported by palaeontological evidence. The rate of accumulation of clay is estimated to have ranged between about 60 and 190 mm/kyr with an overall average through the Matuyama Epoch of about 90 mm/kyr. Assuming that this average rate continued through the Brunhes Epoch, the age of the top of the clay unit is estimated to be about 90,000 yr B.P. About 5 m from the unconformable top surface of the clay, a split sequence of reversed inclinations is interpreted as a record of the Blake Event, and the overall average deposition rate implies that its duration may have been as long as 50,000 yr. No other reversed event is recorded by the palaeomagnetic inclination log through the Brunhes Epoch, though there are four horizons where shallow positive inclinations are recorded.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic polarity measurements from Beds I and II at Olduvai Gorge are described, and used to define the extent of the Olduvai event in the Olduvai Gorge section. The upper boundary of the event occurs very close to the base of the Lemuta Member in Bed II whilst the lower boundary is less well defined but probably occurs just below Tuff IA, The results imply minimum net accumulation rates of about 17 cm in 103 years in the lacustrine, and more than 30 cm in 103 years in the alluvial fan deposits, which represent only the upper part of the Olduvai event.  相似文献

本文报道由蓝田、陕县、洛川、西峰、平凉、兰州及靖远等剖面获得的古地磁研究结果.主要结论为:1.中国黄土剖面记录了Brunhes正极性带与Matuyama负极性带,Brunhes/Matuyama极性转换过程位于第8层黄土(L8).在段家坡黄土剖面该转换过程对应的地层厚度为0.375m,持续时间约6000a.转换过程由3次极性变化构成,每次经历的时间约为400a.2.Jaramillo正极性亚带(J)位于标志层L9至L15之间,大约S10-S13位置.3.Olduvai正极性亚带(O)对应的地层为S27-S334.Reunion正极性亚带(R)由两部分组成,在蓝田段家坡黄土剖面分别位于L36和S385.Matuyama负极性带与Gauss正极性带界限(M/Ga)位于黄土和红色粘土交界处,中国黄土的底界年龄为2.48Ma左右.黄土与红色粘土为整合接触关系.6.黄土下伏的红色粘土记录了Gauss正极性带,Gilbert负极性带和古地磁年表编号5(Epoch5).  相似文献

Geological investigations were performed on the Roccamonfina extint volcano with the purpose to recognize the nature of the main volcanic formations (with particular regard to pyroclastic deposits) and to ascertain their true order of succession. The volcanic history may be sketched as follows:

Data for basaltic rocks dredged on the Reykjanes Ridge and Jökulbanki off the southwest coast of Iceland are presented. The rocks from the Reykjanes Ridge, which are identified as recent lavas, are olivine tholeiites and quartz tholeiites very similar to those formerly described from this region. The heterogeneous Jökulbanki dredges were identified as erratics.In the light of the present and other recent data on tholeiitic rocks from Iceland and the Reykjanes Ridge, a distinct chemical gradient, together with increased scatter across Iceland is demonstrated for certain incompatible elements. This is in accordance with the mantle plume theory.  相似文献

The geology of Lesotho is relatively simple: the overall structure being that of a large shallow basin of Karroo sediments and volcanics. The rocks analysed in this study were collected in December 1966. The principal objectives of the study were (a) to date the inception of Karroo volcanism and (b) to arrive at an estimate of the time-span represented by the lava section along the Bushman’s Pass road east of Maseru. The date at which volcanism began in Lesotho is important because of recent discoveries of early mammalian fossils in underlying beds; in relation to the Phanerozoic Time-Scale and to the K-Ar age pattern found in the Karroo dolerites of South Africa byMcDougall (1963). Cox andHornung (1966) have suggested that the fractionation stage reached by Karroo magmas may depend upon either the height of the magma column or the time that elapsed since the beginning of the volcanic episode. An estimate of the time-span of volcanism along the Bushman’s Pass section is of interest because of the extensive palaeomagnetic work done on these rocks at the Bernard Price Institute of Geophysical Research in Johannesburg. The paper contains the results of triplicate conventional total degassing whole rock K-Ar age determinations on 8 Drakensberg lavas and on 8 Karroo dolerite sills and dykes. The analysed rocks are described petrographically and the age pattern obtained from them is discussed in relation to the age and petrological information available from other Karroo igneous rocks. It is concluded that Karroo volcanism began in Lesotho around 187 m.y. and that « Karroo » intrusive activity continued intermittently until at least 155 m.y. ago. Some possible geological and petrological implications of these conclusions are outlined.  相似文献

The degree of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of basaltic rocks, as is known from the large AMS database of these rocks, is generally very low, while in more acidic volcanic rocks such as andesites, trachytes and phonolites, which have been investigated much less frequently, it is in general much higher. In the present study, the AMS of various volcanic rocks including trachytic and phonolitic rocks was investigated in the Tertiary volcanic region of the eské stedohoí Mts. Viscosities of the respective lavas were calculated from the chemical composition using the KWARE program. A rough correlation was found between the degree of AMS and lava viscosities, probably resulting from different mechanisms orienting the magnetic minerals. In basaltic lava flows this mechanism is traditionally considered to be of a hydrodynamic nature, in trachytic and phonolitic bodies it can also be represented by quasi-intrusive flows resembling, at least partially, ductile flow deformation. This is in agreement with the AMS data predicted by the viscous (liquid flow) and line/plane (ductile flow) models.  相似文献

The results of a palaeomagnetic investigation of a 27 m thick loess/palaeosol sequence in Viatovo (NE Bulgaria) are presented in this paper. The sequence consists of topsoil S0, seven loess horizons (L1–L7) and six interbedded palaeosols (S1–S6) overlying a red clay (terra rossa) complex. Magnetic viscosity experiments, IRM acquisition, AMS analysis and NRM stepwise alternating and thermal demagnetisation experiments of pilot samples were implemented for precise determination of the characteristic remanence and construction of a reliable magnetostratigraphical scheme. Analysis of IRM acquisition curves using the expectation – maximization algorithm of Heslop et al. [Heslop, D., Dekkers, M., Kruiver, P., van Oorschot, H., 2002. Analysis of isothermal remanent magnetization acquisition curves using the expectation – maximization algorithm. Geophys. J. Int., 148, 58–64] suggests that the best fitting is obtained by three coercivity components. Component 1 corresponds to SD maghemite/magnetite, while component 2 is probably related to the presence of oxidised detrital magnetites. The third component shows varying coercivities depending on the degree of pedogenic alteration of the samples and probably reflects the presence of detrital magnetite grains oxidised at different degree.

The relevance of the Viatovo section as a key representative sequence for the loess cover in the Danube basin is confirmed by the presence of geomagnetic polarity changes in the lower part of the sequence. The youngest one recorded in the seventh loess unit L7 can be identified as corresponding to the Matuyama/Brunhes palaeomagnetic polarity transition. Two normal magnetozones were found in the red clay complex, probably corresponding to the Jaramillo and Olduvai subchronozones of the Matuyama chron.  相似文献

The Hilina Formation comprises the oldest sequence of lava flows and tuffs exposed on Kilauea Volcano. These rocks are only exposed in kipukas in younger Puna Formation lavas along cliffs on the south flank of Kilauea Volcano. Locally, tuffs and flows of the Pahala Formation separate the underlying Hilina Formation rocks rom the overlying Puna Formation rocks. Charcoal collected from the base of the Pahala Formation yielded a C14 age of 22.800±340 years B.P. which defines a minimum age for the Hilina Formation. Hilina Formation lavas crop out over a wide region and probably originated from the summit area and from both rift zones. The Hilina Formation contains both olivine-controlled and differentiated lavas (using the terminology ofWright, 1971). The olivine-controlled lavas of the Hilina Formation are distinguishable mineralogically and geochemically from younger olivine-controlled Kilauea lavas. The younger lavas generally contain discrete low-calcium pyroxene grains. greater glass contents, higher K2O/P2O5 ratios and lower total iron contents. Similar geochemical trends prevail for Manuna Loa lavas, and may typify the early lavas of Hawaiian shield volcanoes. Despite these similarities, the Hilina Formation (and all Kilauea) lavas have higher TiO2 and CaO, and lower SiO2 and Al2O3 contents than Mauna Loa Lavas. These differences have existed for over 30,000 years. Therefore, it is unlikely that the older lavas of Kilauea are compositionally similar to recent Mauna Loa lavas as was previously suggested. K2O, TiO2, Na2 and Zr contents of lavas from a stratigraphic sequence of Hilina Formation lavas are variable. These variations may be utilized to subdivide the sequence into geochemical groups. These groups are not magma batches. Rather, they represent lavas from batches whose compositions may have been modified by crystal fractionation and magma mixing.  相似文献

This paper presents a new method of analysing lava flow deposits which allows the velocity, discharge rate and rheological properties of channelled moving lavas to be calculated. The theory is applied to a lava flow which was erupted on Kilauea in July 1974. This flow came from a line of fissures on the edge of the caldera and was confined to a pre-existing gully within 50 m of leaving the vent. The lava drained onto the floor of the caldera when the activity stopped, but left wall and floor deposits which showed that the lava banked up as it flowed around each of the bends. Field surveys established the radius of curvature of each bend and the associated lava levels, and these data, together with related field and laboratory measurements, are used to study the rheology of the lava. The results show the flow to have been fast moving but still laminar, with a mean velocity of just over 8 m s–1; the lava had a low or negligible yield strength and viscosities in the range 85–140 Pa s. An extension of the basic method is considered, and the possibility of supercritical flow discussed.  相似文献

This paper reviews processes which, it is argued, occurred in lunar lava flows and were involved in the formation of lunar sinuous rilles.The development of ideas relating to rille formation is described and evidence which suggests that they are products of lava effusions is outlined.An analytical lava flow model is described which relates the shapes of lava flows to conditions at the commencement of the flows. An essential part of the model is its use of the yield strength of lava as a parameter. It is shown that the model predicts the occurrence of the channel/levee morphology of lava flows.It is argued that the channels of large flows were deepened by melting. Heat transfer processes within lava flows are discussed and analysed and it is shown that a prolonged period of flow is required before melting of the substrate begins. Estimates are given of initial heating periods and subsequent melting rates.The possibility of the occurrence of turbulent lava flow is discussed. Application of the flow model to sinuous rilles and flows in Mare Imbrium shows that both types of feature could be the remnants of similar effusive events in which the flow could have become turbulent. Turbulent flow is shown to promote erosive melting and it is suggested that the sinuous rilles were cut by the flows which became turbulent.A process of rille formation is described which is consistent with the foregoing arguments and with observations made at Hadley Rille. Submarine lava flow morphology is commonly used to estimate relative flow velocity, but the effects of crystallinity and viscosity are rarely considered. We use digital petrography and quantitative textural analysis techniques to determine the crystallinity of submarine basaltic lava flows, using a set of samples from previously mapped lava flow fields at the hotspot-affected Galápagos Spreading Center. Crystallinity measurements were incorporated into predictive models of suspension rheology to characterize lava flow consistency and rheology. Petrologic data were integrated to estimate bulk lava viscosity. We compared the crystallinity and viscosity of each sample with its flow morphology to determine their respective roles in submarine lava emplacement dynamics. We find no correlation between crystallinity, bulk viscosity, and lava morphology, implying that flow advance rate is the primary control on submarine lava morphology. However, we show systematic variations in crystal size and shape distribution among pillows, lobates, and sheets, suggesting that these parameters are important indicators of eruption processes. Finally, we compared the characteristics of lavas from two different sampling sites with contrasting long-term magma supply rates. Differences between lavas from each study site illustrate the significant effect of magma supply on the physical properties of the oceanic upper crust.  相似文献

A summary of the available data on the peralkaline rocks of S. Pietro and S. Antioco islands, together with, new chemical analyses and some preliminary K-Ar ages are reported. Peralkaline rocks occur as ignimbrites, lava flows and domes usually deeply affected by hydrothermal alteration. Pantelleritic varieties are found within the dominantly comenditic association, which display K2O contents higher than Na2O ones. K-Ar data indicate that these peralkaline rocks have a middle Miocene age (? 15 m.y.). They occur in close field association with coheval andesitic and subalkaline acid volcanics belonging to the final products of the Tertiary calc-alkaline volcanic cicle of Sardinia.  相似文献

Summary We have studied 454 oriented samples from seven loess outcrops in the Czech Republic for comparison and correlation of the magnetic properties with those of the loess profiles in China and Central Asia. Three sections at Sedlec (Prague), Zeměchy and Dolní Věstonice cover the time span of the last glacial-interglacial cycle. Loess from the middle Pleistocene period including pedocomplexes V and VI was studied at Sedlešovice (Znojmo) and Karlštejn. Loess of uncertain — possibly lower to middle Pleistocene age — was sampled at Sedlec near Mikulov. At Červeny Kopec (Red Hill, Brno) we investigated the oldest loess near the Matuyama/Brunhes (M/B) boundary. The characteristic remanence (ChRM) determined after magnetic clearning is of normal polarity throughout all sections except at Červeny Kopec. There, two polarity changes from reversed to normal were found within two sections initially thought to represent two successive stratigraphic intervals. However, the marked similarities between lithological, susceptibility, declination and inclination profiles lead us to suggest that the two polarity changes are in fact one and the same. The two sections are therefore laterally equivalent and both have recorded the M/B field reversal. The susceptibility variations were used to mutually correlate the Czech sections and to construct a composite profile across the present day loess outcrops in the Czech Republic. They also serve as a paleoclimate proxy which can be compared and correlated with the paleoclimatic records observed in the Chinese and Central Asian loess. The origin of the low field susceptibility variations was studied by measuring the frequency dependence of susceptibility which revealed that the enhancement within the pedocomplexes is controlled by the amount of fine-grained ferromagnetic minerals present.  相似文献

A major carbonate reef which drowned 13 ka is now submerged 150 m below sea level on the west coast of the island of Hawaii. A 25-km span of this reef was investigated using the submersibleMakali'i. The reef occurs on the flanks of two active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Hualalai, and the lavas from both volcanoes both underlie and overlie the submerged reef. Most of the basaltic lava flows that crossed the reef did so when the water was much shallower, and when they had to flow a shorter distance from shoreline to reef face. Lava flows on top of the reef have protected it from erosion and solution and now occur at seaward-projecting salients on the reef face. These relations suggest that the reef has retreated shoreward as much as 50 m since it formed. A 7-km-wide shadow zone occurs where no Hualalai lava flows cross the reef south of Kailua. These lava flows were probably diverted around a large summit cone complex. A similar shadow zone on the flank of Mauna Loa volcano in the Kealakekua Bay region is downslope from the present Mauna Loa caldera, which ponds Mauna Loa lava and prevents it from reaching the coastline. South of the Mauna Loa shadow zone the - 150 m reef has been totally covered and obscured by Mauna Loa lava. The boundary between Hualalai and Mauna Loa lava on land occurs over a 6-km-wide zone, whereas flows crossing the - 150 m reef show a sharper boundary offshore from the north side of the subaerial transition zone. This indicates that since the formation of the reef, Hualalai lava has migrated south, mantling Mauna Loa lava. More recently, Mauna Loa lava is again encroaching north on Hualalai lava.  相似文献
