Three special classes of equilibrium orientations of gyrostat satellites subject to gravitational torques have been treated in the literature. Here we find the set of all equilibria for a restricted class of gyrostat configurations. Those configurations for which the internal angular momentum vector (or the rotor axis) is aligned with a principal axis have been treated in a separate work, where it is shown that at one, and only one, rotor speed there exists a continuum of equilibrium orientations. When the rotor axis is moved away from a principal axis in such a way that it is contained in a plane formed by two principal axes, it is shown that the continuum disappears, and we have a new set of eight equilibrium orientations which have not previously been described. The stability of these orientations is then investigated using the Hamiltonian as a Liapunov testing function. The highly flattened distribution of satellite galaxies in the Milky Way (MW) presents a number of puzzles. First, its polar alignment stands out from the planar alignments commonly found in other galaxies. Secondly, recent proper-motion measurements reveal that the orbital angular momentum of at least three, and possibly as many as eight, of the MW's satellites points (within  30°  ) along the axis of their flattened configuration, suggesting some form of coherent motion. In this paper, we use a high-resolution cosmological simulation to investigate whether this pattern conflicts with the expectations of the cold dark matter model of structure formation. We find that this seemingly unlikely setup occurs often: approximately 35 per cent of the time, we find systems in which the angular momentum of three individual satellites points along, or close to, the short axis of the satellite distribution. In addition, in 30 per cent of the systems we find that the net angular momentum of the six best-aligned satellites lies within  35°  of the short axis of the satellite distribution, as observed for the MW.  相似文献

The stability of attitude equilibria relative to gravitational torques for a rigid satellite in a circular orbit has been divided into three inertia regions, the Lagrange region of assured Liapunov stability, the Beletskii-Delp region which is often described as stabilized due to gyroscopic coupling, and an assured instability region. The generalization of these regions to the case of dual-spin or gyrostat satellites whose internal spin momentum is along a principal axis is treated here. The stability boundaries are obtained for all possible equilibrium orientations for such vehicles, and the variations of these boundaries corresponding to changes in the internal momentum magnitude, or to aligning the momentum with a different principal axis, are determined.Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the Institut für Mechanik; on sabbatical leave from Columbia University, New York, U.S.A.  相似文献

We investigate the properties of satellite galaxies formed in N -body/SPH simulations of galaxy formation in the ΛCDM cosmology. The simulations include the main physical effects thought to be important in galaxy formation and, in several cases, produce realistic spiral discs. In total, a sample of nine galaxies of luminosity comparable to the Milky Way was obtained. At magnitudes brighter than the resolution limit,   MV =−12  , the luminosity function of the satellite galaxies in the simulations is in excellent agreement with data for the Local Group. The radial number density profile of the model satellites, as well as their gas fractions also match observations very well. In agreement with previous N -body studies, we find that the satellites tend to be distributed in highly flattened configurations whose major axis is aligned with the major axis of the (generally triaxial) dark halo. In two out of three systems with sufficiently large satellite populations, the satellite system is nearly perpendicular to the plane of the galactic disc, a configuration analogous to that observed in the Milk Way. The discs themselves are perpendicular to the minor axis of their host haloes in the inner parts, and the correlation between the orientation of the galaxy and the shape of the halo persists even out to the virial radius. However, in one case the disc's minor axis ends up, at the virial radius, perpendicular to the minor axis of the halo. The angular momenta of the galaxies and their host halo tend to be well aligned.  相似文献

We study the motion of the free dual-spin gyrostat spacecraft that consists of the platform with a triaxial ellipsoid of inertia and the rotor with a small asymmetry with respect to the axis of rotation. The system with perturbations caused by a small asymmetry of the rotor and the time-varying moments of inertia of the rotor is considered. The dimensionless equations of the system are written in Serret–Andoyer canonical variables. The system’s phase space is described. It is shown that changes in the moments of inertia of the gyrostat leads to the deformation of the phase space. The internal torque control law is proposed that keeps the system at the center point in the phase space. The effectiveness of the control is shown through a numerical simulation. It’s shown that the uncontrolled gyrostat can lose its axis orientation. Proposed internal torque keeps the initial angle between the axis of the gyrostat and the total angular momentum vector.  相似文献

In our previous paper (hereafter, paper I) we presented analytical results on the non-planar motion of a planet around a binary star for the cases of the circular orbits of the components of the binary. We found that the orbital plane of the planet (the plane containing the “unperturbed” elliptical orbit of the planet), in addition to precessing about the angular momentum of the binary, undergoes simultaneously the precession within the orbital plane. We demonstrated that the analytically calculated frequency of this additional precession is not the same as the frequency of the precession of the orbital plane about the angular momentum of the binary, though the frequencies of both precessions are of the same order of magnitude. In the present paper we extend the analytical results from paper I by relaxing the assumption that the binary is circular – by allowing for a relatively small eccentricity ε of the stars orbits in the binary. We obtain an additional, ε-dependent term in the effective potential for the motion of the planet. By analytical calculations we demonstrate that in the particular case of the planar geometry (where the planetary orbit is in the plane of the stars orbits), it leads to an additional contribution to the frequency of the precession of the planetary orbit. We show that this additional, ε-dependent contribution to the precession frequency of the planetary orbit can reach the same order of magnitude as the primary, ε-independent contribution to the precession frequency. Besides, we also obtain analytical results for another type of the non-planar configuration corresponding to the linear oscillatory motion of the planet along the axis of the symmetry of the circular orbits of the stars. We show that as the absolute value of the energy increases, the period of the oscillations decreases.  相似文献

A modified spectroscopic technique yields a value for Uranus' period of 23?2+5 hr, which disagrees with the accepted value of 10.8 hr determined spectroscopically in the 1930s. Uranus' rotational axis is probably close to the perpendicular to the orbital plane of the satellites, as often assumed. Its projection on the plane of the sky is within 5° of the projection of the normal to the orbital plane of the satellites.  相似文献

We use controlled N-body simulation to investigate the dynamical processes (dynamical friction, tidal truncation, etc.) involved in the merging of small satellites into bigger halos. We confirm the validity of some analytic formulae proposed earlier based on simple arguments. For rigid satellites represented by softened point masses, the merging time scale depends on both the orbital shape and concentration of the satellite. The dependence on orbital ellipticity is roughly a power law, as suggested by Lacey & Cole, and the dependence on satellite concentration is similar to that proposed by White. When merging satellites are represented by non-rigid objects, Tidal effects must be considered. We found that material beyond the tidal radius are stripped off. The decrease in the satellite mass might mean an increase in the merging time scale, but in fact, the merging time is decreased, because the stripped-off material carries away a proportionately larger amount of of orbital energy and angular momentum.  相似文献

The sodium D-lines are observed in emission in a disklike distribution surrounding Io and extending outward in the orbital plane of the Galilean satellites to at least 23 RJ from Jupiter. A scale length for the sodium emission cloud in the orbital plane and the thickness of the sodium disk perpendicular to the orbital plane are determined. Weak D-line emission is also detected over the poles of Jupiter. Estimates of the apparent emission rates are derived from microdensitometer scans of the spectrograms as a function of position in the satellite orbital plane and perpendicular to the orbital plane. No other emission lines were detected down to a limit of ~50 R over the spectral range from 3500 Å to 9000 Å.  相似文献

By using the method of separating rapid and slow subsystem, we obtain an analytical solution for a stable three-dimensional motion of a circumbinary planet around a binary star. We show that the motion of the planet is more complicated than it was obtained for this situation analytically by Farago and Laskar (2010). Namely, in addition to the precession of the orbital plane of the planet around the angular momentum of the binary (found by Farago and Laskar (2010)), there is simultaneously the precession of the orbital plane of the planet within the orbital plane. We show that the frequency of this additional precession is different from the frequency of the precession of the orbital plane around the angular momentum of the binary. We demonstrate that this problem is mathematically equivalent both to the problem of the motion of a satellite around an oblate planet and to the problem of a hydrogen Rydberg atom in the field of a high-frequency linearly-polarized laser radiation, thus discovering yet another connection between astrophysics and atomic physics. We point out that all of the above physical systems have a higher than geometrical symmetry, which is a counterintuitive result. In particular, it is manifested by the fact that, while the elliptical orbit of the circumbinary planet (around a binary star) or of the satellite (around an oblate planet) or of the Rydberg electron (in the laser field) undergoes simultaneously two types of the precession, the shape of the orbit does not change. The fact that a system, consisting of a circumbinary planet around a binary star, possesses the hidden symmetry should be of a general physical interest. Our analytical results could be used for benchmarking future simulations.  相似文献

Let a rigid satellite move in a circular orbit about a spherically symmetric central body, taking into account only the main term of the gravitational torque. We shall investigate and find all solutions of the following problem: Let the satellite be permitted to spin about an axis that is fixed in the orbit frame; the satellite need not be symmetric, the spin not uniform, and the spin axis not a principal axis of inertia. The complete discussion of this type of spin reveals that the cases found by Lagrange and by Pringle - and the well-known spin about a principal axis of inertia orthogonal to the orbit plane — are essentially the only ones possible; the only further (degenerate) case is uniform spin of a two-dimensional, not necessarily symmetric satellite about certain axes that are orthogonal to the plane containing the body and to the orbit of the satellite around the central body.  相似文献

We investigate the stability of the periodic motion of a satellite, a rigid body, relative to the center of mass in a central Newtonian gravitational field in an elliptical orbit. The orbital eccentricity is assumed to be low. In a circular orbit, this periodic motion transforms into the well-known motion called hyperboloidal precession (the symmetry axis of the satellite occupies a fixed position in the plane perpendicular to the radius vector of the center of mass relative to the attractive center and describes a hyperboloidal surface in absolute space, with the satellite rotating around the symmetry axis at a constant angular velocity). We consider the case where the parameters of the problem are close to their values at which a multiple parametric resonance takes place (the frequencies of the small oscillations of the satellite’s symmetry axis are related by several second-order resonance relations). We have found the instability and stability regions in the first (linear) approximation at low eccentricities.  相似文献

The semimajor axis of the Lageos satellite's orbit is decreasing secularly at the rate of 1.1 mm day–1. Ten possible mechanisms are investigated to discover which one (s), if any, might be causing the orbit to decay. Six of the mechanisms, resonance with the Earth's gravitational field, gravitational radiation, the Poynting-Robertson effect, transfer of spin angular momentum to the orbital angular momentum, drag from near-earth dust, and atmospheric drag by neutral hydrogen are ruled out because they are too small or require unacceptable assumptions to account for the observed rate of decay. Three other mechanisms, the Yarkovsky effect, the Schach effect, and terrestrial radiation pressure give perturbations whose characteristic signatures do not agree with the observed secular decrease (terrestrial radiation pressure appears to be too small in any case); hence they are also ruled out. Charged particle drag with the ions at Lageos's altitude is probably the principal cause of the orbital decay. An estimate of charged particle drag based upon laboratory experiments and satellite measurements of ion number densities accounts for 60 percent of the observed rate of decrease in the semimajor axis, assuming a satellite potential of –1V. This figure is in good agreement with other estimates based on charge drag theory. A satellite potential of –1.5V will explain the entire decay rate. Atmospheric drag from neutral hydrogen appears to be the next largest effect, explaining about 10 percent of the observed orbital decay rate.  相似文献

The origin of Phobos and Deimos is considered with a view to accounting for the existence of very small satellites with circular orbits in the Martian equatorial plane, and simultaneously for the suspected angular momentum deficiency of the Mars system. All models considered failed to satisfy at least one requirement, and the problem is considered more puzzling than is at first apparent. The Martian angular momentum deficiency, if physically significant, may be unrelated to the present satellites' origin, but might relate to a large ancient satellite, long ago destroyed. Accretion onto Mars of large amounts of asteroidal dust brought in by Poynting-Robertson drag may have some bearing on the angular momentum problem.  相似文献

In order to achieve the maximum strength of higher resonance locks for satellites in the elliptic orbit, the condition of satellite orientation during the process of deployment is established. It is shown that for maximum strength locks the axis of the minimum moment of inertia of satellites should point toward the attracting body at ±(5/8) and 0 values of the true anomalyf. This condition of deployment is applicable to all cases of resonance rotation regardless of the value of lock numberk and orbit eccentricitye.  相似文献

Two special cases of the problem of the secular perturbations in the orbital elements of a satellite with a negligible mass produced by the joint influence of the oblateness of the central planet and the attraction by its most massive (or main) satellites and the Sun are considered. These cases are among the integrable ones in the general nonintegrable evolution problem. The first case is realized when the plane of the satellite orbit and the rotation axis of the planet lie in its orbital plane. The second case is realized when the plane of the satellite orbit is orthogonal to the line of intersection between the equatorial and orbital planes of the planet. The corresponding particular solutions correspond to those polar satellite orbits for which the main qualitative features of the evolution of the eccentricity and pericenter argument are described here. Families of integral curves have been constructed in the phase plane of these elements for the satellite systems of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus.  相似文献

The time dependences of the inertia tensor and of a dissipative torque caused by the nonleptonic weak interaction have been investigated for a certain class of pulsars with no solid core. Early in the life of the pulsar, the angular velocity vector is predicted to move with respect to fixed body axes in such a way that it becomes perpendicular to the magnetic dipole moment. During this motion, the solid outer shell suffers plastic deformation so that the dipole moment becomes approximately collinear with a principal axis. After 104 or 105 yr, the dissipative torque is negligibly small compared with the electromagnetic torque, the Euler equations are those for a simple rigid body, and alignment of spin and dipole moment occurs. If the dipole moment discussed by Lyneet al. (1975) is interpreted as being equal to the component perpendicular to the spin, its secular decay is a natural property of this model and is not a consequence of field decay through electrical resistivity.  相似文献

Gravity-gradient perturbations of the attitude motion of a tumbling tri-axial satellite are investigated. The satellite center of mass is considered to be in an elliptical orbit about a spherical planet and to be tumbling at a frequency much greater than orbital rate. In determining the unperturbed (free) motion of the satellite, a canonical form for the solution of the torque-free motion of a rigid body is obtained. By casting the gravity-gradient perturbing torque in terms of a perturbing Hamiltonian, the long-term changes in the rotational motion are derived. In particular, far from resonance, there are no long-period changes in the magnitude of the rotational angular momentum and rotational energy, and the rotational angular momentum vector precesses abound the orbital angular momentum vector.At resonance, a low-order commensurability exists between the polhode frequency and tumbling frequency. Near resonance, there may be small long-period fluctuations in the rotational energy and angular momentum magnitude. Moreover, the precession of the rotational angular momentum vector about the orbital angular momentum vector now contains substantial long-period contributions superimposed on the non-resonant precession rate. By averaging certain long-period elliptic functions, the mean value near resonance for the precession of the rotational angular momentum vector is obtained in terms of initial conditions.  相似文献

Attitude motion of a satellite subjected to gravitational and aerodynamic torques in a circular orbit is considered. In special case, when the center of pressure of aerodynamic forces is located in one of the principal central planes of inertia of the satellite, all equilibrium orientations are determined. Existence conditions of all equilibria are obtained and evolution of domains with a fixed number of equilibria is investigated in detail. All bifurcation values of the system’s parameters corresponding to the qualitative change of these domains are determined. Sufficient conditions of stability are obtained for each equilibrium orientation using generalized integral of energy.  相似文献

New exact analytic solutions are introduced for the rotational motion of a rigid body having two equal principal moments of inertia and subjected to an external torque which is constant in magnitude. In particular, the solutions are obtained for the following cases: (1) Torque parallel to the symmetry axis and arbitrary initial angular velocity; (2) Torque perpendicular to the symmetry axis and such that the torque is rotating at a constant rate about the symmetry axis, and arbitrary initial angular velocity; (3) Torque and initial angular velocity perpendicular to the symmetry axis, with the torque being fixed with the body. In addition to the solutions for these three forced cases, an original solution is introduced for the case of torque-free motion, which is simpler than the classical solution as regards its derivation and uses the rotation matrix in order to describe the body orientation. This paper builds upon the recently discovered exact solution for the motion of a rigid body with a spherical ellipsoid of inertia. In particular, by following Hestenes’ theory, the rotational motion of an axially symmetric rigid body is seen at any instant in time as the combination of the motion of a “virtual” spherical body with respect to the inertial frame and the motion of the axially symmetric body with respect to this “virtual” body. The kinematic solutions are presented in terms of the rotation matrix. The newly found exact analytic solutions are valid for any motion time length and rotation amplitude. The present paper adds further elements to the small set of special cases for which an exact solution of the rotational motion of a rigid body exists.  相似文献
