Embedded Young Stellar Objects (YSO) in dense interstellar clouds are treated self-consistently to understand their spectral energy distributions (SED). Radiative transfer calculations in spherical geometry involving the dust as well as the gas component, have been carried out to explain observations covering a wide spectral range encompassing near-infrared to radio continuum wavelengths. Various geometric and physical details of the YSOs are determined from this modelling scheme. In order to assess the effectiveness of this self-consistent scheme, three young Galactic star forming regions associated with IRAS 18314-0720, 18355-0532 and 18316-0602 have been modelled as test cases. They cover a large range of luminosity (≈ 40). The modelling of their SEDs has led to information about various details of these sources, e.g. embedded energy source, cloud structure and size, density distribution, composition and abundance of dust grains etc. In all three cases, the best fit model corresponds to the uniform density distribution. Two types of dust have been considered, viz., Draine & Lee (DL) and the Mezger, Mathis & Panagia (MMP). Models with MMP type dust explain the dust continuum and radio continuum emission from IRAS 18314-0720 and 18355-0532 self-consistently. These models predict much lower intensities for the fine structure lines of ionized heavy elements, than those observed for IRAS 18314-0720 and 18355-0532. This discrepancy has been resolved by invoking clumpiness in the interstellar medium. For IRAS 18316-0602, the model with DL type dust grains is preferred.  相似文献

The detection of very high energy γ-ray emission from the Galactic center has been reported by four independent groups. One of these γ-ray sources, the 10TeV γ-ray radiation reported by HESS, has been suggested as having a hadronic origin when relativistic protons are injected into and interact with the dense ambient gas. Assuming that such relativistic protons required by the hadronic model come from the tidal disruption of a star by the massive black hole of Sgr A*, we explore the spectrum of the relativistic protons. In the calculations, we investigate cases where different types of stars are tidally disrupted by the black hole of Sgr A*, and we consider that different diffusion mechanisms are used for the propagation of protons. The initial energy distribution of the injected spectrum of protons is assumed to follow a power-law with an exponential cut-off, and we derive the different indices of the injected spectra for the tidal disruption of different types of stars. For the best fit to the spectrum of photons detected by HESS, the spectral index of the injected relativistic protons is about 2.05 when a red giant is tidally disrupted by the black hole of Sgr A* and the diffusion mechanism is the Effective Confinement of Protons.  相似文献

High-resolution far-infrared observations of a large area of the star-forming complex RCW 106 obtained using the TIFR 1-m balloon-borne telescope are presented. Intensity maps have been obtained simultaneously in two bands centred around 150 and 210 μm. Intensity maps have also been obtained in the four IRAS bands using HIRES-processed IRAS data. From the 150- and 210-μm maps, reliable maps of dust temperature and optical depth have been generated. The star formation in this complex has occurred in five linear sub-clumps. Using the map at 210 μm, which has a spatial resolution superior to that of IRAS at 100 μm, 23 sources have been identified. The spectral energy distribution (SED) and luminosity of these sources have been determined using the associations with the IRAS maps. The luminosity distribution of these sources has been obtained. Assuming these embedded sources to be zero-age main-sequence stars and using the mass–luminosity relation for these, the power-law slope of the initial mass function is found to be −1.73±0.5 . This index for this very young complex is about the same as that for more evolved complexes and clusters. Radiation transfer calculations in spherically symmetric geometry have been undertaken to fit the SEDs of 13 sources with fluxes in both the TIFR and the IRAS bands. From this, the r −2 density distribution in the envelopes is ruled out. Finally, a correlation is seen between the luminosity of embedded sources and the computed dust masses of the envelopes.  相似文献

Three Galactic star forming regions associated with W3(OH), S209 and S187 have been simultaneously mapped in two trans-IRAS far infrared (FIR) bands centered at ≈140 and 200μm using the TIFR 100 cm balloon borne FIR telescope. These maps show extended FIR emission with structures. The HIRES processed IRAS maps of these regions at 12, 25, 60 & 100 ìm have also been presented for comparison. Point-like sources have been extracted from the longest waveband TIFR maps and searched for associations in the other five bands. The diffuse emission from these regions have been quantified, which turns out to be a significant fraction of the total emission. The spatial distribution of cold dust (T < 30 K) for two of these sources (W3(OH) & S209), has been determined reliably from the maps in TIFR bands. The dust temperature and optical depth maps show complex morphology. In general the dust around S209 has been found to be warmer than that in W3(OH) region.  相似文献

In order to understand the forming mechanism of the radial abun- dance gradient of the Galactic disk and the evolution of cold gas, we have con- structed a chemical evolution model of the Galactic disk, in which the star for- mation law concerned with molecular hydrogens is adopted, and the evolution of mass surface density is calculated for the molecular and atomic hydrogens separately, then the model predictions and the observed radial distributions of some physical quantities are compared. The result indicates that the model prediction is sensitive to the adopted infall timescale, the model which adopts the star formation law concerned with the molecular hydrogens can agree well with the major observed properties of the Galactic disk, especially can obtain naturally the radial oxygen abundance gradient of the Galactic disk, and the radial surface density profile of cold gas. The assumption of instantaneous or non-instantaneous recycling approximation has a small effect on the evolution of cold gas, especially in the case of rather low gas density.  相似文献

Some recent developments in the study of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei and microquasars are reviewed. While it has been well established for some time that extragalactic jets found in radio galaxies, quasars, and BL Lac objects are the site of ultrarelativistic particle acceleration, the recent identification of the Galactic jet source and microquasar LS~5039 as a source of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission has underlined the striking similarity between the two types of astrophysical jet sources. In this paper, I will present an overview of the dominant radiation and particle acceleration processes and observational tests to distinguish between such processes. The wide-ranging analogies between Galactic and extragalactic jets, but also their distinct differences, in particular those caused by the presence of the companion star in Galactic microquasar systems, will be exposed.  相似文献

We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to make high-resolution images of the 6.7-GHz 51 → 60A+ maser transition of methanol towards 33 sources in the Galactic plane. Including the results from 12 methanol sources in the literature, we find that 17 out of 45 sources have curved or linear morphology. Most of the 17 have a velocity gradient along the line, which is consistent with masers lying in an edge-on circumstellar disc surrounding a massive star. We also made simultaneous continuum observations of the sources at 8.6 GHz, in order to image any associated H  ii region. 25 of the sources are associated with an ultracompact H  ii region, with a detection limit of ∼0.5 mJy beam−1. We argue that the methanol sources without an associated H  ii region represent less massive embedded stars, not an earlier stage in the lifetime of the star, as previously suggested.  相似文献

Increasing the identification completeness of sources from new X-ray sky surveys is a necessary condition for further works on analyzing the formation and long-term evolution of star systems in our Galaxy. Infrared observations of several sources selected from Galactic plane surveys as candidates for low-mass X-ray binaries with the IRSF telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory are presented. The infrared fluxes have been reliably measured from five of the eight sources (4U 1556-60, 4U 1708-40, AX J165901-4208, IGR J16287-5021, IGR J17350-2045, AX J171922-3703, SAX J1712.6-3739, 4U 1705-32). One of the objects (AX J165901-4208) may be a candidate for symbiotic X-ray binaries, i.e., binaries in which the companion of a relativistic object is a giant star. The distances have been estimated for three sources and the orbital periods have been estimated for two.  相似文献

Observations obtained with the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) satellite reveal for the first time the complex mid-infrared morphology of the entire Carina Nebula (NGC 3372). On the largest size scale of approximately 100 pc, the thermal infrared emission from the giant H ii region delineates one coherent structure: a (somewhat distorted) bipolar nebula with the major axis perpendicular to the Galactic plane. The Carina Nebula is usually described as an evolved H ii region that is no longer actively forming stars, clearing away the last vestiges of its natal molecular cloud. However, the MSX observations presented here reveal numerous embedded infrared sources that are good candidates for sites of current star formation. Several compact infrared sources are located at the heads of dust pillars or in dark globules behind ionization fronts. Because their morphology suggests a strong interaction with the peculiar collection of massive stars in the nebula, we speculate that these new infrared sources may be sites of triggered star formation in NGC 3372.  相似文献

Previous models for the chemical evolution of the Magellanic Clouds have assumed either a steepened IMF compared to the solar neighbourhood or preferential expulsion of oxygen and α-particle elements by selective galactic winds. These assumptions were largely motivated by a belief that the O/Fe ratio in the Clouds is substantially lower than in the Galaxy, but the difference appears to have been exaggerated: Galactic supergiants have a similar O/Fe ratio as Cloud supergiants, there is no corresponding effect in Mg and other α-elements and a combination of data from planetary nebulae, H II regions and supernova remnants indicates an O/Fe ratio more or less equal to solar. Consequently new analytical models for the chemical evolution of the Magellanic Clouds have been developed, assuming chemical yields and time delays identical to those we previously assumed for the solar neighbourhood, but assuming (in addition to infall) non-selective galactic winds and burst-like modes of star formation represented by discontinuous variations in the star formation rate per unit gas mass. We find adequate agreement with age-metallicity relations and element:element ratios within their substantial uncertainties, whereas our LMC model turns out to give an excellent fit to the anomalous Galactic halo stars discovered by Nissen and Schuster (1997). It also gives an enhanced SNIa/SNII ratio compared to the solar neighbourhood, due to the assumption that the SFR has declined in the past 1 to 2 Gyr. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The availability of large format, low noise detector arrays has opened the 1 to 20 m region for sub-arcsecond imaging. Using recent results in the investigation of Galactic star forming regions, the Galactic center and external galaxies as examples, we discuss the various techniques that have been employed. These range from image selection and image sharpening, over speckle techniques and adaptive optics to lunar occultation. These examples demonstrate that sub-arcsecond imaging and spatial interferometry in the near- and mid-infrared has a great future potential.  相似文献

The population of faint transients in the Galactic Centre   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
BeppoSAX has detected a population of faint transient X-ray sources in the Galactic Centre. I show that a simple irradiated disc picture gives a consistent fit to the properties of this population, and that it probably consists of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) that have evolved beyond their minimum orbital periods of ∼80 min. Since all post-minimum systems are transient, and neutron star LMXBs are more common than black hole LMXBs in the Galaxy, the majority of these systems should contain neutron stars, as observed. This picture predicts that the Galactic Centre transients should have orbital periods in the range ∼80–120 min, and that most of them should repeat in the next few years. In this case, the total number of post-minimum transients in the Galaxy would be considerably smaller than the usual estimates of its total LMXB population. I discuss possible reasons for this.  相似文献

A method based on Lucy's iterative algorithm is developed to invert the equation of stellar statistics for the Galactic bulge and is then applied to the K -band star counts from the Two-Micron Galactic Survey in a number of off-plane regions (10°>| b |>2°, | l |<15°). The top end of the K -band luminosity function is derived and the morphology of the stellar density function is fitted to triaxial ellipsoids, assuming a non-variable luminosity function within the bulge. The results, which have already been outlined by López-Corredoira et al., are shown in this paper with a full explanation of the steps of the inversion: the luminosity function shows a sharp decrease brighter than M K =−8.0  mag when compared with the disc population; the bulge fits triaxial ellipsoids with the major axis in the Galactic plane at an angle with the line of sight to the Galactic centre of 12° in the first quadrant; the axial ratios are 1:0.54:0.33, and the distance of the Sun from the centre of the triaxial ellipsoid is 7860 pc. The major–minor axial ratio of the ellipsoids is found not to be constant, the best fit to the gradient being K z =(8.4±1.7)×exp(− t /(2000±920) pc), where t is the distance along the major axis of the ellipsoid in parsecs. However, the interpretation of this is controversial. An eccentricity of the true density-ellipsoid gradient and a population gradient are two possible explanations. The best fit for the stellar density, for 1300 pc< t <3000 pc, is calculated for both cases, assuming an ellipsoidal distribution with constant axial ratios, and when K z is allowed to vary. From these, the total number of bulge stars is ∼3×1010 or ∼4×1010, respectively.  相似文献

The allsky image of 26Al radiation at 1.809 MeV with COMPTEL suggests that clusters of massive stars dominate the Galactic production of 26Al. Studies of rather well-known localized regions are most promising to further this interpretation. In the Vela region, excessive emissivity is found compared to other Galactic regions. This may be due to few prominent foreground sources, such as the Vela SNR and RX J0852.0-4622 combined; but more plausibly the star forming activity along the Vela Molecular Ridge is enhanced in general, too. In the anticenter region, the detected 26Al emission appears related to nucleosynthetic activity in the Orion OB1 association: It seems plausible that ejecta are being vented into the Eridanus bubble blown by earlier massive stars’ activity.  相似文献

Chemical evolution of the Magellanic Clouds: analytical models   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have extended our analytical chemical evolution modelling ideas for the Galaxy to the Magellanic Clouds. Unlike previous authors (Russell &38; Dopita, Tsujimoto et al. and Pilyugin), we assume neither a steepened initial mass function nor selective galactic winds, since among the α-particle elements only oxygen shows a large deficit relative to iron and a similar deficit is also found in Galactic supergiants. Thus we assume yields and time delays identical to those that we previously assumed for the solar neighbourhood. We include inflow and non-selective galactic winds and consider both smooth and bursting star formation rates, the latter giving a better fit to the age–metallicity relations. We predict essentially solar abundance ratios for primary elements and these seem to fit most of the data within their substantial scatter. Our model for the Large Magellanic Cloud also gives a remarkably good fit to the anomalous Galactic halo stars discovered by Nissen &38; Schuster.   Our models predict current ratios of Type Ia supernova to core-collapse supernova rates enhanced by 50 and 25 per cent respectively relative to the solar neighbourhood, in fair agreement with ratios found by Cappellaro et al. for Sdm–Im relative to Sbc galaxies, but these ratios are sensitive to detailed assumptions about the bursts and a still higher enhancement in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been deduced from X-ray studies of remnants by Hughes et al. The corresponding ratios integrated over time up to the present are slightly below 1, but they exceed 1 if one compares the Magellanic Clouds with the Galaxy at times when it had the corresponding metallicities.  相似文献

The recent detection of very-high-energy (GeV – TeV) γ-ray emission from the Galactic black-hole candidate and microquasar LS 5039 has sparked renewed interest in jet models for the high-energy emission in those objects. In this work, we have focused on models in which the high-energy emission results from synchrotron and Compton emission by relativistic electrons in the jet (leptonic jet models). Particular attention has been paid to a possible orbital modulation of the high-energy emission due to azimuthal asymmetries caused by the presence of the companion star. Both orbital-phase dependentγγ absorption and Compton scattering of optical/UV photons from the companion star may lead to an orbital modulation of the gamma-ray emission. We make specific predictions which should be testable with refined data from HESS and the upcoming GLAST mission.  相似文献

A diffusion model for the propagation of relativistic nuclear cosmic rays in the Galaxy is developed. The model has two nonstandard features: The escape of cosmic-ray particles from the Galaxy is simulated by a term in the diffusion equations, rather than the imposition of boundary conditions on the diffusion solution at the surface of the confinement region. And an age-dependent, locally-averaged effective gas distribution is employed in the diffusion equations. The model simulates free-particle outflow at the Galactic boundary. The model is fit to chemical composition data in the 0.3–5 GeV per nucleon range. It is then consistent with the large-scale Galactic -ray data, radio halo data, energy constraints on the assumed supernova sources, and, when extended to very high energies, cosmic-ray anisotrophy data. From the fit we conclude that the cosmic rays are confined in a large flattened or quasis-pherical halo with a scale height in the range 3–6 kpc and an average Galactic escape time of 108 yr.  相似文献

Recent data on the empirical metallicity distribution of G dwarfs in the disk solar neighbourhood are fitted in two different ways. We use an extended Poisson distribution in the limit where the probability of star formation is small, and a Gauss distribution in the limit where a large number of physical variables is required to determine stellar metal abundance. Both are found to reproduce the data at the same (acceptable) extent, with a slight preference for the former. The emprirical, differential metallicity distribution of G dwarfs in the disk solar neighbourhood is compared with its theoretical counterpart, in the picture of a closed, comoving model of chemical evolution. The limits of the currently used infall models are discussed and a scenario of galactic formation and evolution is presented. The Galactic history is thought as made of two main phases: contraction (which produces the extended component) and equilibrium (which gives the disk). In this view, the stars observed within the solar cylinder did not necessarily arise from the primordial gas which later collapsed into the disk solar neighbourhood. It is found that the G-dwarf problem is strongly alleviated, with the possible exception of the low-metallicity and high-metallicity tail of the distribution. The best choice of parameters implies: (i) a metal yield in the contraction phase which is larger by a factor of about 5 with respect to the equilibrium phase; (ii) a model halo mass fraction of about 0.3; (iii) a model disk mass fraction of about 0.6. It provides additional support to the idea of a generalized Schmidt star formation law, which is different in different phases of evolution. The model, cumulative, G-dwarf metallicity distribution in the disk solar neighbourhood is found to predict too may low-metallicity stars with respect to its empirical counterpart, related to a Poissonian or Gaussian fit. The main resons for the occurrence of a G-dwarf problem are discussed. Finally, a stochastic process of star formation, related to a Poisson distribution, is briefly outlined.  相似文献

This paper has two parts: one about observational constraints, and the other about chemical evolution models. In the first part, the empirical differential metallicity distribution (EDMD) is deduced from two different samples involving (i) 268 K-giant bulge stars [Sadler, E.M., Rich, R.M., Terndrup, D.M., 1996. AJ 112, 171], and (ii) 149 globular clusters [Mackey, A.D., van den Bergh, S., 2005. MNRAS 360, 631], in addition to previous results (Caimmi, R., 2001b, AN 322, 241 (C01)) related to (iii) 372 solar neighbourhood halo subdwarfs [Ryan, S.G., Norris, J.E., 1991. AJ 101, 1865]. Under the assumption that each distribution is typical for the corresponding subsystem, the EDMD of the Galactic spheroid is determined by weighting the mass. The empirical age-metallicity relation (EAMR) involving absolute ages is deduced from recent results related to a homogeneous sample of globular clusters [De Angeli, F., Piotto, G., Cassisi, S., et al., 2005. AJ 130, 116]. In the second part, models of chemical evolution for the Galactic halo and bulge are computed, assuming the instantaneous recycling approximation. The EDMD data are fitted, to an acceptable extent, by simple models of chemical evolution implying both homogeneous and inhomogeneous star formation, provided that star formation is inhibited during halo formation and enhanced during bulge formation, with respect to the disk solar neighbourhood, taken to be representative of the whole disk. The initial mass function (IMF) is assumed to be a universal power law, which implies the same value of the true yield in different subsystems. The theoretical differential metallicity distribution (TDMD) is first determined for the halo and the bulge separately, and then for the Galactic spheroid by weighting the mass. The EAMR cannot be fitted into the Simple model that implies homogeneous star formation, but shows a non-monotonic trend characterized by large dispersion. On the other hand, simple models involving inhomogeneous star formation yield a theoretical age-metallicity relation (TAMR) which reproduces the data to an acceptable extent. For gas ouflow from the proto-halo, acceptable models give rise to different predictions in different alternatives. If the Galactic spheroid and disk underwent decoupled chemical evolution, i.e. no gas exchange between the related reservoirs, less than one third of the bulge mass outflowed from the proto-halo. If the Galactic spheroid and disk underwent coupled chemical evolution, i.e. some gas exchange between the related reservoirs, the existence of an unseen baryonic halo (or equivalent amount of gas lost by the Galaxy) with mass comparable to bulge mass, is necessarily needed. In this view, the outflowing proto-halo gas which remains bound to the Galaxy, produces both the bulge and the disk.  相似文献

Magnetic fields are observed everywhere in the universe. In this review, we concentrate on the observational aspects of the magnetic fields of Galactic and extragalactic objects. Readers can follow the milestones in the observations of cosmic magnetic fields obtained from the most important tracers of magnetic fields, namely, the star-light polarization, the Zeeman effect, the rotation measures (RMs, hereafter) of extragalactic radio sources, the pulsar RMs, radio polarization observations, as well as the newly implemented sub-mm and mm polarization capabilities. The magnetic field of the Galaxy was first discovered in 1949 by optical polarization observations. The local magnetic fields within one or two kpc have been well delineated by starlight polarization data. The polarization observations of diffuse Galactic radio background emission in 1962 confirmed unequivocally the existence of a Galactic magnetic field. The bulk of the present information about the magnetic fields in the Galaxy comes from anal  相似文献
