We present a steady one-dimensional model for a pulsar polar cap accelerator, where the field-aligned electric field and flow are solved self-consistently with a given current density. It is assumed that no particles return to the star. It is known that the space-charge-limited flow is accelerated to energies high enough to create electron–positron pairs if the assumed current density is high enough. We find that when pairs are created in such a space-charge-limited flow, the accelerating electric field is screened out within a short distance after pair creation, if the pair particle flux is larger than a critical value. We also find that a space charge density wave is excited in the screening region.
We find that a pair flux larger than the critical value M c=103–105 must be reached in a layer with thickness equal to the braking distance for the decelerating component. Therefore, the required multiplicity – the number of pairs created by one primary particle – is too large to be realized in the actual pulsar magnetosphere. We suggest that in order to obtain a localized potential drop along the polar cap magnetic flux, one needs to take into account additional effects such as wave–particle interaction or quasi-periodic pair creation.  相似文献

We restudy the possible contribution of mature gamma-ray pulsars to cosmic ray positrons based on the new version of outer gap model. In this model, the inclination angle and average properties of the outer gap are taken into account, and more mature pulsars can have the outer gap and emit high energy photons. Half of the primary particles in the outer gaps will flow back toward the star surface and emit synchrotron photons, which can produce electron/positron pairs by the cascade of pair production. Some of these pairs will escape from the light cylinder and be accelerated to relativistic energies in the pulsar wind driven by low-frequency electromagnetic waves. Using a Monte Carlo method, we obtain a sample of mature gamma-ray pulsars and then calculate the production of the positrons from these pulsars. The observed excess of cosmic positrons can be well explained by this model.  相似文献

We present a modified scenario of gamma-ray emission from pulsars within the framework of polar cap models. Our model incorporates the possible acceleration of electron–positron pairs created in magnetospheres, and their subsequent contribution to the gamma-ray luminosity L γ. It also reproduces the empirical trend in L γ for seven pulsars detected with Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory ( CGRO ) experiments. At the same time it avoids basic difficulties faced by theoretical models when confronted with observational constraints.   We show that the classical and millisecond pulsars form two distinct branches in the L γ— L sd diagram (where L sd is the spin-down luminosity). In particular, we explain why the millisecond pulsar J0437−4715 has not been detected with any of the CGRO instruments despite its very high position in the ranking list of spin-down fluxes (i.e. L sd/ D 2, where D is a distance). The gamma-ray luminosity predicted for this particular object is about one order of magnitude below the upper limit set by EGRET.  相似文献

The fast-spinning Crab pulsar (∼30 turn s−1), which powers the massive expansion and synchrotron emission of the entire Crab nebula, is surrounded by quasi-stationary features such as fibrous arc-like wisps and bright polar knots in the radial range of 2×1016≲ r ≲2×1017 cm, as revealed by high-resolution (∼0.1 arcsec) images from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on board the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ). The spin-down energy flux (∼5×1038 erg s−1) from the pulsar to the luminous outer nebula, which occupies the radial range 0.1≲ r ≲2 pc, is generally believed to be transported by a magnetized relativistic outflow of an electron–positron e± pair plasma. It is then puzzling that mysterious structures like wisps and knots, although intrinsically dynamic in synchrotron emission, remain quasi-stationary on time-scales of a few days to a week in the relativistic pulsar wind. Here we demonstrate that, as a result of slightly inhomogeneous wind streams emanating from the rotating pulsar, fast magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shock waves are expected to appear in the pulsar wind at relevant radial distances in the forms of wisps and knots. While forward fast MHD shocks move outward with a speed close to the speed of light c , reverse fast MHD shocks may appear quasi-stationary in space under appropriate conditions. In addition, Alfvénic fluctuations in the shocked magnetized pulsar wind can effectively scatter synchrotron beams from gyrating relativistic electrons and positrons.  相似文献

It is shown that the radius of curvature of magnetic field lines in the polar region of a rotating magnetized neutron star can be significantly less than the usual radius of curvature of the dipole magnetic field. The magnetic field in the polar cap is distorted by toroidal electric currents flowing in the neutron star crust. These currents close up the magnetospheric currents driven by the electron–positron plasma generation process in the pulsar magnetosphere. Owing to the decrease in the radius of curvature, electron–positron plasma generation becomes possible even for slowly rotating neutron stars, with   PB −2/312 < 10 s  , where P is the period of star rotation and   B 12= B /1012 G  is the magnitude of the magnetic field on the star surface.  相似文献

It is shown that induced Raman scattering of electromagnetic waves in the strongly magnetized electron–positron plasma of pulsar magnetospheres may be important for wave propagation and as an effective saturation mechanism for electromagnetic instabilities. The frequencies at which strong Raman scattering occurs in the outer parts of a magnetosphere fall into the observed radio band. The typical threshold intensities for the strong Raman scattering are of the order of the observed intensities, implying that pulsar magnetospheres may be optically thick to Raman scattering of electromagnetic waves.

We use a new self-consistent model to derive the conversion efficiency from rotation power to γ-ray power for pulsars (εth). Our result indicates that εth∝τ6/7 P 2, where τ and P are the characteristic age and period of the pulsar, which shows that although the efficiency increases with the characteristic age of the pulsar, it also depends on the pulsar period. We test our model results with the survey of high-energy γ-rays from pulsars by EGRET. Our model not only successfully explains the efficiency of the confirmed γ-ray pulsars but also explains why the γ-ray efficiency of millisecond pulsars is so low.  相似文献

A new picture of pulsar high-energy emission is proposed that is different from both the traditional polar cap and outer gap models, but combines elements of each. The slot gap model is based on electron acceleration along the edge of the open field region from the neutron star surface to near the light cylinder and thus could form a physical basis for the two-pole caustic model of Dyks and Rudak (2003). Along the last open field line, the pair formation front rises to very high altitude forming a slot gap, where the accelerating electric field is unscreened by pairs. The resulting radiation features both hollow cones from the lower-altitude pair cascades, seen at small viewing angles, as well as caustic emission on the trailing-edge field lines at high altitude, seen from both poles at large viewing angle. The combination of the small solid angle of slot gap emission (≪ 1 sr) with a high probability of viewing the emission predicts that more gamma-ray pulsars could be detected at larger distances. In this picture, many of the positional coincidences of radio pulsars with unidentified EGRET sources become plausible as real associations, as the flux predicted by the slot gap model for many of the pulsars would provide the observed EGRET source flux. The expected probability of seeing radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars in this model will also be discussed.  相似文献

Propagation of radio waves in the ultrarelativistic magnetized electron–positron plasma of a pulsar magnetosphere is considered. The polarization state of the original natural waves is found to vary markedly on account of the wave mode coupling and cyclotron absorption. The change is most pronounced when the regions of mode coupling and cyclotron resonance approximately coincide. In cases when the wave mode coupling occurs above and below the resonance region, the resultant polarization appears essentially distinct. The main result of the paper is that in the former case the polarization modes become non-orthogonal. The analytical treatment of the equations of polarization transfer is accompanied by numerical calculations. The observational consequences of polarization evolution in pulsar plasma are discussed as well.  相似文献

The single glitch observed in PSR B1821−24, a millisecond pulsar in M28, is unusual on two counts. First, the magnitude of this glitch is at least an order of magnitude smaller  (Δν/ν∼ 10−11)  than the smallest glitch observed to date. Secondly, all other glitching pulsars have strong magnetic fields with   B ≳ 1011 G  and are young, whereas PSR B1821−24 is an old recycled pulsar with a field strength of  2.25 × 109 G  . We have earlier suggested that some of the recycled pulsars could actually be strange quark stars. In this work, we argue that the crustal properties of such a strange pulsar are just right to give rise to a glitch of this magnitude, explaining the scarcity of larger glitches in millisecond pulsars.  相似文献

We have observed a total of 67 pulsars at five frequencies ranging from 243 to 3100 MHz. Observations at the lower frequencies were made at the Giant Metre-Wave Telescope in India and those at higher frequencies at the Parkes Telescope in Australia. We present profiles from 34 of the sample with the best signal-to-noise ratio and the least scattering. The general 'rules' of pulsar profiles are seen in the data; profiles get narrower, the polarization fraction declines and outer components become more prominent as the frequency increases. Many counterexamples to these rules are also observed, and pulsars with complex profiles are especially prone to rule breaking. We hypothesize that the location of pulsar emission within the magnetosphere evolves with time as the pulsar spins down. In highly energetic pulsars, the emission comes from a confined range of high altitudes, in the middle range of spin down energies the emission occurs over a wide range of altitudes whereas in pulsars with low spin-down energies it is confined to low down in the magnetosphere.  相似文献

The famous neutron star Geminga was until quite lately the only pulsar undetected in the radio regime, though observed as a strong pulsating γ- and X-ray source. Three independent groups from the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory (Russia) reported recently the detection of pulsed radio emission from Geminga at 102.5 MHz, i.e., the first detection of the radio pulsar PSR J0633 + 1746 by Kuz'min &38; Losovskii, Malofeev &38; Malov and Shitov &38; Pugachev. This pulsar exhibits the weakest radio luminosity known. Its average pulse profile appears to be very wide, filling an entire 360° pulse window according to Kuz'min &38; Losovskii.   We present a model explaining the peculiarities of the Geminga radio pulsar, based on the assumption that it is an almost aligned rotator. The electromagnetic waves generated in the inner magnetosphere reach the region within the light cylinder with a weak magnetic field (at distances of a few light cylinder radii), where they are strongly damped due to the cyclotron resonance with particles of magnetospheric electron–positron plasma. The lowest frequencies that can escape are determined by the value of the magnetic field in the region where the line of sight passes through the light cylinder. The specific viewing geometry of an almost aligned rotator implies that the observer's line of sight probes the emission region near the bundle of the last open field lines. This explains the unusually weak emission from Geminga's low-frequency radio pulsar.  相似文献

Invisible plasma content in blazar jets such as protons and/or thermal electron–positron ( e ±) pairs is explored through combined arguments of dynamical and radiative processes. By comparing physical quantities required by the internal shock model with those obtained through the observed broad-band spectra for Mrk 421, we obtain that the ratio of the Lorentz factors of a pair of cold shells resides in about 2 ∼ 20, which implies that the shocks are at most mildly relativistic. Using the obtained Lorentz factors, the total mass density ρ in the shocked shells is investigated. The upper limit of ρ is obtained from the condition that thermal bremsstrahlung emission should not exceed the observed γ-ray luminosity, whilst the lower limit is constrained from the condition that the energy density of non-thermal electrons is smaller than that of the total plasma. Then, we find ρ is 102–103 times heavier than that of non-thermal electrons for pure   e ±  pairs, while 102–106 times heavier for pure electron–proton ( e / p ) content, implying the existence of a large amount of invisible plasma. The origin of the continuous blazar sequence is briefly discussed and we speculate that the total mass density and/or the blending ratio of e ± pairs and e / p plasma could be new key quantities for the origin of the sequence.  相似文献

Some massive binaries should contain energetic pulsars which inject relativistic leptons from their inner magnetospheres and/or pulsar wind regions. If the binary system is compact enough, then these leptons can initiate inverse Compton (IC) e± pair cascades in the anisotropic radiation field of a massive star. γ-rays can be produced in the IC cascade during its development in a pulsar wind region and above a shock in a massive star wind region where the propagation of leptons is determined by the structure of a magnetic field around the massive star. For a binary system with specific parameters, we calculate phase-dependent spectra and fluxes of γ-rays escaping as a function of the inclination angle of the system and for different assumptions on injection conditions of the primary leptons (their initial spectra and location of the shock inside the binary). We conclude that the features of γ-ray emission from such massive binaries containing energetic pulsars should allow us to obtain important information on the acceleration of particles by the pulsars, and on interactions of a compact object with the massive star wind. Predicted γ-ray light curves and spectra in the GeV and TeV energy ranges from such binary systems within our Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds should be observed by future AGILE and GLAST satellites and low-threshold Cherenkov telescopes, such as MAGIC, HESS, VERITAS or CANGAROO III.  相似文献

We study the contribution of young pulsars, with characteristic ages of less than 106 yr, to the diffuse γ-ray emission from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Based on the outer gap model for γ-ray emission proposed by Zhang & Cheng and pulsar properties in the LMC given by Hartmann, Brown & Schnepf, we simulate the properties of the young pulsars in the LMC. We show that γ-rays produced by the pulsars in the LMC may make an important contribution to the diffuse γ-rays in the LMC, especially in the high-energy range. We calculate the γ-ray energy spectrum of the pulsars in the LMC and show that the γ-ray component contributed by the pulsars to the diffuse γ-rays in the high-energy range (above ∼1 GeV) becomes dominant. We expect that none of the young pulsars should be detectable as an individual point source of γ-ray emission by EGRET. We also expect that pulsar contribution above ∼1 GeV in the SMC is very important.  相似文献

A numerical method to determine the electromagnetic field of a steadily rotating magnetosphere with an inclined magnetic moment under a given boundary condition on an arbitrary shaped boundary surface is presented. The region may include the light cylinder. The present method, together with a companion method giving particle motion and creation, makes an iterative scheme to obtain a global model of the pulsar magnetosphere. A key problem for explaining the particle acceleration in pulsars is to solve field-aligned electric field in an accelerating region bounded by an ideal-MHD region. The present method is fit to connect a solution for the non-ideal-MHD region with another solution for the ideal-MHD region on a boundary surface whose location should also be solved (i.e., a floating boundary). The integration scheme is based on the boundary element method and it has great advantage as compared with other methods like the finite difference method and the Fourier transformation method.  相似文献
