A recently developed fully explicit algebraic model of Reynolds stress and turbulent heat flux in a thermally stratified planetary atmospheric boundary layer without stratification has been used for a numerical study of the Ekman turbulent boundary layer over a homogeneous rough surface for different dimensionless surface Rossby numbers. A comparative analysis has been conducted for a closure model of the transport term in the prognostic equation of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation including third-order moments. Dependences of the total wind rotation angle on the Rossby number have been obtained. The calculated vertical profiles of mean velocity, turbulent stress, turbulent kinetic energy, surface-friction velocity, and boundary-layer height agree satisfactorily with observational and earlier obtained LES data.  相似文献

A numerical model based upon a low Reynolds number turbulence closure is proposed to study Reynolds number variation in reciprocating oscillatory boundary layers. The model is used to compute the boundary layer for flow regimes ranging from smooth laminar to rough turbulent. Criteria for fully developed turbulence are derived for walls of the smooth and rough types. In particular, a new criterion to identify the rough turbulent regime is determined based on the time-averaged turbulence intensity. The reliability of the present model is assessed through comparisons with detailed experimental data collected by other investigators. The model globally improves upon standard high Reynolds number closures. Variation through the wave cycle of the main flow variables (ensemble-averaged velocity, shear stress, turbulent kinetic energy) is remarkably well-predicted for smooth walls. Predictions are satisfactory for rough walls as well. Yet, the turbulence level in the rough turbulent regime is overpredicted in the vicinity of the bed.  相似文献

Effects of Stokes production on summer ocean shelf dynamics   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A two-dimensional numerical model, which is configured on the basis of Princeton ocean model(POM),is used to study the effect of Stokes production(SP) of the turbulent kinetic energy on a density profile and Ekman transport in an idealized shelf region in summer. The energy input from SP is parameterized and included into the Mellor-Yamada turbulence closure submodel. Results reveal that the intensity of wind-driven upwelling fronts near the sea surface is weakened by the SP-associated turbulent kinetic energy input. The vertical eddy viscosity coefficient in the surface boundary layer is enhanced greatly owing to the impact of SP,which decreases the alongshore velocity and changes the distribution of upwelling. In addition, the SP-induced mixing easily suppresses the strong stratification and significantly increases the depth of the upper mixed layer(ML) under strong winds.  相似文献

An analytical theory which describes the motion in a turbulent wave boundary layer near a rough sea bottom by using a two-layer time invariant eddy viscosity model is presented. The eddy viscosity in the inner layer increases quadratically with the height above the sea bottom. In the outer layer the eddy viscosity is taken as a constant. The mean velocity and shear stress profiles, the bottom shear stress and the bottom friction coefficient are presented, and comparisons are made with experimental results.  相似文献

Several long-term numerical experiments were conducted on simulating turbulent flow in a channel confined by two rough plates. Computations were based on a model that describes the dynamics of a three-dimensional incompressible fluid at very large Reynolds numbers. This model uses a localized dynamic mixed closure and a fourth-order-accurate conservative scheme. The results of the experiments are compared to the data of observations and direct numerical simulation. It is shown that an a posteriori reconstruction of the modeled velocity field leads to a close approximation of the statistical characteristics of the model solution to the statistical characteristics of the observed variability.  相似文献

The conditions for energy flux, momentum flux and the resulting streaming velocity are analysed for standing waves formed in front of a fully reflecting wall. The exchange of energy between the outer wave motion and the near bed oscillatory boundary layer is considered, determining the horizontal energy flux inside and outside the boundary layer. The momentum balance, the mean shear stress and the resulting time averaged streaming velocities are determined. For a laminar bed boundary layer the analysis of the wave drift gives results similar to the original work of Longuet–Higgins from 1953. The work is extended to turbulent bed boundary layers by application of a numerical model. The similarities and differences between laminar and turbulent flow conditions are discussed, and quantitative results for the magnitude of the mean shear stress and drift velocity are presented. Full two-dimensional simulations of standing waves have also been made by application of a general purpose Navier–Stokes solver. The results agree well with those obtained by the boundary layer analysis. Wave reflection from a plane sloping wall is also investigated by using the same numerical model and by physical laboratory experiments. The phase shift of the reflected wave train is compared with theoretical and empirical models.  相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to explain some of the differences between previously published analytical and numerical models of combined wave and current bottom boundary layer flow. To this end, the Grant and Madsen (1979) model for wave-current, rough turbulent flow is modified to include both first and second harmonic time variations in the eddy viscosity (K). The functional form of the coefficients controlling the amount of time variation is established by analysing the numerical model results of Davies (1990). The addition of time variation in K reduces the strong non-linearity exhibited by the mean stress in the original Grant and Madsen model for current dominated cases, and reproduces the veering of the current predicted by numerical turbulence closure models.  相似文献

A “slip law” connects the excess velocity or “slip” of a wind-blown water surface, relative to the motion in the middle of the mixed layer, to the wind stress, the wind-wave field, and buoyancy flux. An inner layer-outer layer model of the turbulent shear flow in the mixed layer is appropriate, as for a turbulent boundary layer or Ekman layer over a solid surface, allowing, however, for turbulent kinetic energy transfer from the air-side via breaking waves, and for Stokes drift. Asymptotic matching of the velocity distributions in inner and outer portions of the mixed layer yields a slip law of logarithmic form, akin to the drag law of a turbulent boundary layer. The dominant independent variable is the ratio of water-side roughness length to mixed layer depth or turbulent Ekman depth. Convection due to surface cooling is also an important influence, reducing surface slip. Water-side roughness length is a wind-wave property, varying with wind speed similarly to air-side roughness. Slip velocity is typically 20 times water-side friction velocity or 3% of wind speed, varying within a range of about 2 to 4.5%. A linearized model of turbulent kinetic energy distribution shows much higher values near the surface than in a wall layer. Nondimensional dissipation peaks at a value of about eight, a short distance below the surface.  相似文献

A new set of Boussinesq-type equations describing the free surface evolution and the corresponding depth-integrated horizontal velocity is derived with the bottom boundary layer effects included. Inside the boundary layer the eddy viscosity gradient model is employed to characterize Reynolds stresses and the eddy viscosity is further approximated as a linear function of the distance measured from the seafloor. Boundary-layer velocities are coupled with the irrotational velocity in the core region through boundary conditions. The leading order boundary layer effects on wave propagation appear in the depth-integrated continuity equation to account for the velocity deficit inside the boundary layer. This formulation is different from the conventional approach in which a bottom stress term is inserted in the momentum equation. An iterative scheme is developed to solve the new model equations for the free surface elevation, depth-integrated velocity, the bottom stress, the boundary layer thickness and the magnitude of the turbulent eddy viscosity. A numerical example for the evolution of periodic waves propagating in one-dimensional channel is discussed to illustrate the numerical procedure and physics involved. The differences between the conventional approach and the present formulation are discussed in terms of the bottom frictional stress and the free surface profiles.  相似文献

The formation of the mean-wind profile near the rough surface of a fluid is discussed. Classical definitions of the profile’s characteristics are presented, the treatments of the parameters of a logarithmic profile are considered, and the meaning of major concept is refined. On the basis of the numerical model developed by Makin and Kudryavtsev for the dynamic boundary layer, the mean-wind profile is calculated for different stages of wind-wave evolution. Differences between the calculated profiles and the classical logarithmic profile are discussed. A treatment is given for the established differences.  相似文献

Approximate analytical solutions of the boundary layer equation are obtained in closed form for oscillatory rough turbulent flow. The solutions are based on a time-varying eddy viscosity, and the aim of the study is to assess the effects of these time variations on the properties of the wave boundary layer. The flow and the eddy viscosity are made interdependent by a closure assumption which relates the peak value of viscosity in the wave cycle to the peak value of shear velocity. Instantaneous vertical profiles of horizontal velocity and shear stress, and time series of the bed shear stress, are presented for a typical case study. In addition, the wave drag coefficient, the boundary layer thickness and the phase lead of peak bed shear stress over peak free-stream velocity, are determined as functions of both the relative roughness and the parameter governing the magnitude of the time variations in viscosity. Reasonable agreement is demonstrated with previous experimental and theoretical results.  相似文献

Fine- and microstructure observations indicate bottom-intensified turbulent dissipation above rough bathymetry associated with internal wave breaking. Simple analytic representations for the depth profile of turbulent dissipation are proposed here under the assumption that the near bottom wavefield is dominated by a baroclinic tide. This scheme is intended for use in numerical models and thus captures only the gross features of detailed solutions to the energy balance of the internal wavefield. The possible sensitivity of the magnitude and vertical variability of the dissipation rate profile to various environmental parameters is discussed. An expression for the diapycnal buoyancy flux is presented that explicitly treats the difference between the height of an isopycnal above the mean bottom and the actual bottom. This returns a diapycnal velocity estimate that is consistent with both tracer observations of downwelling and a basin scale mass budget that requires upwelling.  相似文献

A three-dimensional numerical model for large-eddy simulation (LES) of oceanic turbulent processes is described. The numerical formulation comprises a spectral discretization in the horizontal directions and a high-order compact finite-difference discretization in the vertical direction. Time-stepping is accomplished via a second-order accurate fractional-step scheme. LES subgrid-scale (SGS) closure is given by a traditional Smagorinsky eddy-viscosity parametrization for which the model coefficient is derived following similarity theory in the near-surface region. Alternatively, LES closure is given by the dynamic Smagorinsky parametrization for which the model coefficient is computed dynamically as a function of the flow. Validation studies are presented demonstrating the temporal and spatial accuracy of the formulation for laminar flows with analytical solutions. Further validation studies are described involving direct numerical simulation (DNS) and LES of turbulent channel flow and LES of decaying isotropic turbulence. Sample flow problems include surface Ekman layers and wind-driven shallow water flows both with and without Langmuir circulation (LC), generated by wave effects parameterized via the well-known Craik–Leibovich (C–L) vortex force. In the case of the surface Ekman layers, the inner layer (where viscous effects are important) is not resolved and instead is parameterized with the Smagorinsky models previously described. The validity of the dynamic Smagorinsky model (DSM) for parameterizing the surface inner layer is assessed and a modification to the surface stress boundary condition based on log-layer behavior is introduced improving the performance of the DSM. Furthermore, in Ekman layers with wave effects, the implicit LES grid filter leads to LC subgrid-scales requiring ad hoc modeling via an explicit spatial filtering of the C–L force in place of a suitable SGS parameterization.  相似文献

A three-dimensional numerical model is established to simulate the turbulent oscillatory boundary layer over a fixed and rough bed composed by randomly arrayed solid spheres based on the lattice Boltzmann method and the large eddy simulation model. The equivalent roughness height, the location of the theoretical bed and the time variation of the friction velocity are investigated using the log-fit method. The time series of turbulent intensity and Reynolds stress are also investigated. The equivalent roughness height of cases with Reynolds numbers of 1×10~4–6×10~4 is approximately 2.81 d(grain size). The time variation of the friction velocity in an oscillatory cycle exhibits sinusoidal-like behavior. The friction factor depends on the relative roughness in the rough turbulent regime, and the pattern of solid particles arrayed as the rough bed in the numerical simulations has no obvious effect on the friction factor.  相似文献

The paper reports on a class of models for a turbulent boundary layer which are based on the turbulent energy balance equation and closure and use hypothesis of the type of Karman relations for turbulent mixing paths or complementary transport equations. It is shown that in the absence of a velocity shear near the kinetic turbulent energy flux all the models are encompassed by a unique hypothesis and satisfy with depth a linear dependence of the mixing path.Translated by Vladimir A.

A method is suggested for simulating axisymmetric laminar or turbulent flows formed during the motion of a vortex-ring bunch of given geometry and circulation toward a plane screen. Earlier, similar problems were simulated with the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flows. Turbulent flows have remained unconsidered until now. When a vortex ring approaches the screen, the secondary nonstationary flow is induced near the screen’s surface and this secondary flow causes the formation of the radial boundary layer (provided that air viscosity is taken into account). First, the medium spreads out from the critical point at the screen’s center with the negative pressure gradient along the radial coordinate and then detaches in the region of the positive pressure gradient. This radial wall flow and the corresponding boundary layer are considered in the quasi-stationary approximation. When the boundary layer detaches at successive instances, the flow is replenished with the radially moving secondary vortex rings whose circulations have the sign opposite to that of the circulation of the primary vortex ring. It is the interaction of the primary and secondary vortices that governs process dynamics, which differs substantially from that in the case when the formation of secondary vortices is disregarded. The suggested method is based on the method of discrete vortices (a perfect liquid) and the boundary-layer (laminar or turbulent) theory. During the development of the flow under investigation, the nonstationary ascending flow in the direction perpendicular to the screen’s plane is formed and then this flow decays and dissipates. Simulations for large Reynolds numbers corresponding to the formation of the turbulent boundary layer show that the velocity of ascending vortices in the plane of the initial vortex bunch is less than one-tenth of the initial velocity of the descending vortex ring. The boundary layer is introduced into calculations with the sole goal of determining the parameters of the secondary vortex rings formed during boundary-layer detachments. The interaction of the primary and secondary vortices is then considered within the framework of a perfect medium. Simulations for large Reynolds numbers corresponding to the formation of the turbulent boundary layer on the screen were correlated with the available data obtained in laboratory experiments for small Reynolds numbers. Qualitative agreement between the simulations and experiments is fairly satisfactory. The simulation for one combination of the circulation and vortex-ring geometry takes at most 10–15 min with the use of an average PC.  相似文献

The dependence that the structure and intensity of turbulent and large-scale quasiordered eddies in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) have on the direction of geostrophic wind has been studied on the basis of a series of numerical experiments with a three-dimensional nonstationary model of high spatial resolution. The presence of the meridional component of the angular velocity of the Earth’s rotation results in a significant intensification of velocity fluctuations in a neutrally stratified turbulent flow during the easterly and northeasterly winds and in their decay during the westerly and southwesterly winds. This, in turn, results in significant variations in the mean velocity profile. It is shown that these variations are associated with the largest scale fluctuations and are comparable (in scale) to the depth of Ekman’s turbulent layer. It is found that, in the neutrally stratified ABL bounded in height and under stable stratification inside the ABL, the wind-direction dependence significantly decreases. The possibilities of parameterizing these effects in locally one-dimensional ABL models are discussed.  相似文献

Both wind turning with height and ageostrophic flow in a stably stratified atmospheric boundary layer are analyzed using a three-parameter turbulence model. For a quasi-steady state of the boundary layer, the cross-isobaric flow is determined only by turbulent stress at the surface in the direction of geostrophic wind. The “operative” prediction models, in which the first-order turbulence closure schemes are used, tend to overestimate the boundary-layer depth and underestimate the angle between the surface and geostrophic winds when compared to “research” models (schemes of high-level turbulence closure). The true value of the angle between the surface and geostrophic winds is significant for the presentation of a large-scale flow. A nocturnal low-level jet is a mesoscale phenomenon reflected in data obtained from measurements in a stably stratified atmospheric boundary layer. It is found that such jets are of great importance in transporting humidity, momentum, and air pollution. In this study, the difference between jet flows over a homogeneous underlying surface and over a spatially localized large-scale aerodynamic roughness is shown.  相似文献
