Abstract

Remote sensing techniques are useful for agro-hydrological monitoring at the farm scale because the availability of spatially and temporally distributed data improves agricultural models for irrigation and crop yield optimization under water scarcity conditions. This research focuses on the surface water content retrieval using active microwave data. Two semi-empirical models were chosen as these showed the best performances in simulating cross and co-polarized backscatter. Thus, these models were coupled to obtain reliable assessments of both soil water content and soil roughness. The use of the coupled model enables one to avoid using roughness measured in situ. Remote sensing images and in situ data were collected between April and July 2006 within the European Space Agency-funded project AgriSAR 2006. The images data set includes L-band in HH, VV and VH polarizations acquired from the airborne E-SAR sensor, operated by the German Aerospace Centre. Results were validated using in situ soil water content and roughness measurements. The results show that reliable assessment of both soil roughness (r 2 up to ?0.8) and soil water content (r 2 ? 0.9) can be retrieved in fields characterized by low fractional coverage.

In this study, we aim at finding efficient and robust hyperspectral indices for estimating forest leaf water content parameters (equivalent water thickness, EWT and fuel moisture content, FMC), which are useful for the understanding of terrestrial ecosystem functioning and evaluating fire risk. The most efficient hyperspectral indices have been identified (both on the context of index types and wavelength domains) using both a simulated dataset generated from the calibrated leaf reflectance model, PROSPECT, and datasets of field measured reflectance. Results indicate that high precision can be obtained using the type of vegetation index of two wavelength bands based on reflectance derivatives to estimate both parameters, with overall R2 and RMSE of 0·60 ~ 0·75 and 0·0009 ~ 0·0012 g cm?2 for EWT, 0·63 ~ 0·87 and 0·12 ~ 0·20 g g?1 for FMC, respectively. The best indices identified in this study for vegetation water status in temperate deciduous forests were dSR (1510, 1560) for EWT and dSR (2110, 2260) for FMC, with widths of wavebands (Δλ) be variable up to 50 nm for both dSR indices. Despite the obvious discrepancies found in fit when applying the identified indices to different datasets, the indices identified in this study are applicable to various species (Dataset III), various phenological stages, different sites (Dataset I) and various leaf anatomies (Dataset II), and therefore suitable for an all inclusive wide range of application especially in temperate deciduous forests. New ionospheric activity indices are derived from automatically scaled online data from several European ionosonde stations. These indices are used to distinguish between normal ionospheric conditions expected from prevailing solar activity and ionospheric disturbances caused by specific solar and atmospheric events (flares, coronal mass ejections, atmospheric waves, etc.). The most reliable indices are derived from the maximum electron density of the ionospheric 2-layer expressed by the maximum critical frequency foF 2. Similar indices derived from ionospheric M(3000)2 values show a markedly lower variability indicating that the changes of the altitude of the 2-layer maximum are proportionally smaller than those estimated from the maximum electron density in the 2-layer. By using the ionospheric activity indices for several stations the ionospheric disturbance level over a substantial part of Europe (34°N–60°N; 5°W–40°E) can now be displayed online.  相似文献

Following a given classification of geomagnetic activity, we obtained aa index values for the Maunder minimum (1645–1715). It is found that the recurrent and fluctuating activities were not appreciable and that the shock activity levels were very low. The aa index level was due almost entirely to the quiet days. Calculated average solar-wind velocities were 194.3 km s–1 from 1657 to 1700 and 218.7 km s–1 from 1700 onwards. Also, the coronal magnetic field magnitude and southward interplanetary magnetic field component Bz were lower. It is concluded that the nearly absent levels of geomagnetic activity during this period were due to lower coronal and Bz magnetic field magnitudes as well as to the continuous impinging on the Earth of a slow wind.  相似文献

An essential prerequisite for the assessment of the ecological quality of marine ecosystems is the understanding of the natural variability and its effect on the performance of quality indices. This study is focused on the long-term natural variability of diversity, biotic and multimetric indices by using long-term macrofauna data of a coastal area in the southern North Sea (1978-2005). The univariate and most biotic and multimetric indices respond significantly on specific natural disturbance events such as cold winters, but the strength of response varied between indices as well as between events. As a result, the ecological quality status can decrease over a range of 3 (out of 5) classification units. The overall ecological quality was good to high, but an increase of indices occurred from the mid 1980s onwards due to changes in the climate regime. This long-term variability has to be considered within ecological quality assessment schemes.  相似文献

Meteorological time-series data are a fundamental input to hydrological investigations. But sourcing data is often laborious and plagued with difficulties. In an effort to improve efficiency and rigor we present an R-package, named AWAPer ( https://github.com/peterson-tim-j/AWAPer ), for the efficient estimation of daily area weighted catchment average and spatial variance of meteorological variables, including evapotranspiration. The package allows creation and updating of a data-cube of gridded daily data from 1900 onwards. Once created, point and area weighted estimates can be extracted at user-defined locations and time periods for anywhere within Australia. Examples of point and catchment average extraction are presented.  相似文献

The toxicity of distillery wastes to the fish Rasbora daniconius was tested by bioassay. Ten concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 100% were employed. It was found that the fish were quite tolerant at the 1% concentration for about 24 hours of exposure and survived even up to 96 hours. Mortality was noticed in concentrations from 1.5% onwards. In the concentrations of 3.0% and above there was a heavy mortality beginning at 15 hours of exposure. From the chemistry of the medium studied it was found that the toxicity was inversely proportional to pH but directly proportional to conductivity and bicarbonate alkalinity of the medium.  相似文献

Biotransformation of phenyl and methyl mercury chloride was studied in experiments with planktonic algae Chlorella kessleri, Scenedesmus obliquus and blue-green algae Microcystis incerta. To algal cultures cultivated in an inorganic medium the labelled phenyl or methyl mercury hydroxide was added separately in the phase of the logarithmic growth, the resultant concentration being 3.2 × 10?7 M. In intervals of 0, 1, 3, 7, 10 and 14 days samples of the algae and medium were analysed for the total amount of mercury and for the presence of phenyl or methyl mercury. It was found that both methyl and phenyl mercury had accumulated very rapidly in the algae and that up to 70% of 203Hg added was present in the algae during the first 72 hours of the experiment. From the 2nd day onwards, however, methyl and phenyl mercury changed rapidly into inorganic mercury so that by the end of the experiment almost all of the mercury present in algae and the medium was in the form of inorganic mercury.  相似文献

Abstract

Ecological flow needs (EFN) frameworks incorporate a range of ecologically-relevant hydrological variables based on prior knowledge of river regime characteristics. However, when applied in cold regions, these approaches have largely ignored the influence of winter ice cover and the spring freshet on hydrological regimes: key components of river systems in cold regions with important direct effects on water quality, aquatic habitat and ecology. Here, we combine a review of the published literature on cold-regions hydrology and hydro-ecology with available hydrometric information for sites across Canada, a major cold-region country, to explore phenomena unique to these systems. We identify several ecologically-relevant hydrological measures (i.e. annual ice on/off dates, ice-cover duration, spring freshet initiation, peak water level during river ice break-up), pairing these with established metrics for incorporation into an enhanced suite of indicators specifically designed for cold regions. This paper presents the Cold-regions Hydrological Indicators of Change (CHIC), which can provide the basis for the assessment of EFN and climate change assessments in cold-region river ecosystems.

Three multi-metric benthic macrofauna indices were used to assess marine benthic ecological quality status (EcoQS) according to the European Water Framework Directive, in seven pollution gradients mainly, western Scandinavia. The impacts included organic load, hypoxia, metals, urban effluents and physical disturbance. The indices responded in a similar threshold fashion, irrespective of impact factor identity. Usually, the border between Good and Moderate EcoQS (G/M), is determined as some deviation from a reference situation. References, however, are difficult to find. An alternative procedure is described to estimate the G/M border, not requiring reference data. Thresholds, where faunal structure deterioration commences, were identified from non-linear regressions between indices and impact factors. Index values from the less impacted side of the thresholds were assumed to come from environments of Good and High EcoQS, and the 5th percentile of these data, was defined as the G/M border. Estimated G/M borders compared well with previous studies.  相似文献

Using the periodicities obtained by a Maximum Entropy Spectral Analysis (MESA) of the Arosa total ozone data (CC) series for 1932–1971, the values predicted for 1972 onwards were compared with the observed values of the (AD) series. A change of level was noticed, with the observed (AD) values lower by about 7 D.U. Also, the matching was poor in 1980, 1981, 1982. In the monthly values, the most prominent periodicity was the annual wave, comprising some 80% variance. In the 12 month running averages, the annual wave was eliminated and the most prominent periodicity wasT=3.7 years, encompassing roundly 20% variance. This and other periodicities atT=4.7, 5.4, 6.2, 10 and 16 years were all statistically significant at a 3.5a priori i.e., 2a posteriori level. However, the predictions from these were unsatisfactory, probably because some of these periodicities may betransient i.e., changing amplitudes and/or phases with time. Thus, no meaningful prediction seem possible for Arosa total ozone.  相似文献

A study was carried out to assess the potential use of satellite thematic mapper (TM) images to produce maps of vegetation-related variables for erosion modelling. In a Mediterranean study area in southern France the (semi-)natural vegetation was described at 33 field plots using four quantitative methods: the Fosberg structural classification system, the cover and management factor of the Universal Soil Loss Equation, the leaf area index and the total percentage cover. After radiometric correction of the image, the spectral TM bands were processed following three different methods. Each method aimed at combining the data of the six spectral TM bands into a single band in such a way that the resulting image displayed optimal information on green vegetation cover. The algorithms used comprise the normalized difference vegetation index, the conventional ‘tasselled cap’ transformation and a locally tuned tasselled cap transformation. Only slight differences were found between the different methods to calculate spectral vegetation indices for this particular case. Furthermore, the correlations between the field variables and image-derived spectral indices are generally small. The largest correlations were found for the normalized vegetation index and the leaf area index (r + 0·71) and for the normalized vegetation index and Fosberg's structural vegetation classes (r + 0·76). However, Fosberg's method results in very general classes, which are of little use for soil erosion models. Furthermore, the spectral indices appeared to be sensitive for the vitality of the vegetation. Consequently, an area covered by a sensed, senescent vegetation will not yield a large value for the spectral index, but its soil is protected against splash erosion. This might lead to a misinterpretation of the soil protective cover when satellite images are used. A final conclusion is that a balance has to be found between the more accurate, but time-consuming field surveys to gather information on erosion-controlling factors and a certain loss of accuracy associated with the use of quick and easy remote sensing methods.  相似文献

This software (which accompanies McCarroll and Nesje, 1996, Earth Surface Processes and Landforms Vol. 21, 963–977) is designed to quantify the roughness of rock surfaces from profiles recorded using either a micro-roughness meter or a simple profile gauge. The roughness index used is the standard deviation of the differences between adjacent height values recorded at set horizontal intervals. Profiles are assumed to be 19 cm long with heights recorded every 5 mm. The template provided assumes that four profiles are recorded from each of ten surfaces (e.g. boulders). Roughness values are calculated using (overlapping) measurement intervals of 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm and 30 mm. The results are tabulated and presented as ‘deviograms’ which display both the magnitude and scale of roughness. Recent seismicity in the northeast India and its adjoining region exhibits different earthquake mechanisms – predominantly thrust faulting on the eastern boundary, normal faulting in the upper Himalaya, and strike slip in the remaining areas. A homogenized catalogue in moment magnitude, M W, covering a period from 1906 to 2006 is derived from International Seismological Center (ISC) catalogue, and Global Centroid Moment Tensor (GCMT) database. Owing to significant and stable earthquake recordings as seen from 1964 onwards, the seismicity in the region is analyzed for the period with spatial distribution of magnitude of completeness m t, b value, a value, and correlation fractal dimension D C. The estimated value of m t is found to vary between 4.0 and 4.8. The a value is seen to vary from 4.47 to 8.59 while b value ranges from 0.61 to 1.36. Thrust zones are seen to exhibit predominantly lower b value distribution while strike-slip and normal faulting regimes are associated with moderate to higher b value distribution. D C is found to vary from 0.70 to 1.66. Although the correlation between spatial distribution of b value and D C is seen predominantly negative, positive correlations can also be observed in some parts of this territory. A major observation is the strikingly negative correlation with low b value in the eastern boundary thrust region implying a possible case of extending asperity. Incidentally, application of box counting method on fault segments of the study region indicates comparatively higher fractal dimension, D, suggesting an inclination towards a planar geometrical coverage in the 2D spatial extent. Finally, four broad seismic source zones are demarcated based on the estimated spatial seismicity patterns in collaboration with the underlying active fault networks. The present work appraises the seismicity scenario in fulfillment of a basic groundwork for seismic hazard assessment in this earthquake province of the country.  相似文献

Assessing moisture contents of lichens and mosses using ground‐based high‐spectral resolution spectrometers offers immense opportunities for a comprehensive monitoring of peatland moisture status by satellite/airborne imagery. This study investigates the impact of various moisture conditions of common subarctic lichen and moss species upon the spectral signatures obtained. The lichens are Cladina stellaris and Cladina rangiferina, and the mosses are Dicranum elongatum and Tomenthypnum nitens. Reflectance and moisture content measurements of these species were made in a laboratory setting, while maintaining the natural moisture conditions of the samples; once the moisture and spectral measurements were complete, the samples were returned to the field and placed in their natural setting, continuously receiving moisture from precipitation and groundwater and losing water through evaporation and drainage. Changes in reflectance of the visible to shortwave infrared (SWIR) range (400–2500 nm) at various moisture contents were examined, as well as the potential of current spectral reflectance indices to evaluate the plants' moisture contents was examined. Results indicate that the SWIR region is useful in identifying variations in plants moisture conditions, while the unique spectral signatures of the lichens and mosses in the visible and near‐infrared range suggest that these species may be detected by satellite and airborne imagery. Of current spectral indices, the normalized difference infrared index (NDII) was most successful in identifying the above plants' moisture content (details are discussed in the paper). Future study should focus on the development of improved moisture content spectral indices, as well as upscaling reflectance data and spectral indices. 针对目前尚缺乏客观的流域梅雨划分指标的现状,本文依据最新的梅雨监测国家标准与NCEP/NCAR再分析资料,利用19862016年太湖流域水文年鉴逐日雨量整编资料,重新划分了太湖流域入/出梅日期,计算了梅雨特征量,构建了梅雨洪水指数(RFI),并对梅雨期超设计、超警戒洪水年的环流异常成因进行分析.研究表明:(1)新标准下太湖流域多年平均在6月17日入梅,7月11日出梅,梅雨期长度24 d,梅雨量266.8 mm;与历史序列相比,新标准确定的梅雨量一致率较高,其次是入梅时间和出梅时间.(2)雨日数和副高脊线北跳时间是影响入/出梅确定的两个重要因素,新标准将1992、2013年定为空梅,1986、1987、1989、1996、2005年历史入/出梅日期向后调整,1988、2007年出梅日期向前调整,更为合理地反映了梅雨的高温高湿气候特征,客观性较强.(3)梅雨量越大,雨强越大,太湖水位越高,流域越易涝;以梅雨洪水指数作为参考因子,考虑到影响太湖洪水形成的两个关键因子(梅雨期起涨水位、最大7 d降水量占梅雨量的比例),对入梅起涨水位异常偏高、因集中强降雨引起太湖洪水的指示意义较强.(4)高低纬环流配置关系密切,来自西太平洋经南海的偏南气流、印度洋经孟加拉湾的西南暖湿气流汇合后与来自北方的冷空气在太湖流域交汇,太湖流域垂直上升运动异常强烈,触发降雨层结不稳定能量释放,导致暴雨持续形成洪水.  相似文献

Soil‐covered upland landscapes constitute a critical part of the habitable world. Our understanding of how they evolve as a function of different climatic, tectonic and geological regimes is important across a wide range of disciplines and depends, in part, on understanding the links between chemical and physical weathering processes. Extensive previous work has shown that soil production rates decrease with increasing soil column thickness, but chemical weathering rates were not measured. Here we examine a granitic, soil‐mantled hillslope at Point Reyes, California, where soil production rates were determined using in situ produced cosmogenic nuclides (10Be and 26Al), and we quantify the extent as well as the rates of chemical weathering of the saprolite from beneath soil from across the landscape. We collected saprolite samples from the base of soil pits and analysed them for abrasion pH as well as for major and trace elements by X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and for clay mineralogy by X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy. Our results show for the first time that chemical weathering rates decrease with increasing soil thickness and account for 13 to 51 per cent of total denudation. We also show that spatial variation in chemical weathering appears to be topographically controlled: weathering rate decreases with slope across the divergent ridge and increases with upslope contributing area in the convergent swale. Furthermore, to determine the best measure for the extent of saprolite weathering, we compared four different chemical weathering indices – the Vogt ratio, the chemical index of alteration (CIA), Parker's index, and the silicon–aluminium ratio – with saprolite pH. Measurements of the CIA were the most closely correlated with saprolite pH, showing that weathering intensity decreases linearly with an increase in saprolite pH from 4·7 to almost 7. Data presented here are among the first to couple directly rates of soil production and chemical weathering with how topography is likely to control weathering at a hillslope scale. The stream length‐gradient index (SL) shows the variation in stream power along river reaches. This index is very sensitive to changes in channel slope, thus allowing the evaluation of recent tectonic activity and/or rock resistance. Nevertheless, the comparison of SL values from rivers of different length is biased due to the manner in which the index is formulated, thus making correlations of SL anomalies along different rivers difficult. Therefore, when undertaking a comparison of SL values of rivers of different lengths, a normalization factor must be used. The graded river gradient (K) has already been used in some studies to normalize the SL index. In this work, we explore the relationships between the graded river gradient (K), the SL index and the stream power, proposing the use of a re‐named SLk index, which enables the comparison of variable‐length rivers, as well as the drawing of SLk anomaly maps. We present here a GIS‐based procedure to generate SLk maps and to identify SLk anomalies. In order to verify the advantages of this methodology, we compared an SLk map of the NE border of the Granada basin with both simple river profile–knickpoint identification and with an SL map. The results show that the SLk map supplies good results with defined anomalies and suitably reflects the main tectonic and lithological features of the study area.
