Several characteristic geological features found on the surface of Mars by planetary rovers suggest that a possible extinct biosphere could exist based on similar sources of energy as occurred on Earth. For this reason, analytical instrumental protocols for the detection of biomarkers in suitable geological matrices unequivocally have to be elaborated for future unmanned explorations including the forthcoming ESA ExoMars mission. As part of the Pasteur suite of analytical instrumentation on ExoMars, the Raman/LIBS instrument will seek elemental and molecular information about geological, biological and biogeological markers in the Martian record. A key series of experiments on terrestrial Mars analogues, of which this paper addresses a particularly important series of compounds, is required to obtain the Raman spectra of key molecules and crystals, which are characteristic for each biomarker. Here, we present Raman spectra of several examples of organic compounds which have been recorded non-destructively—higher n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carotenoids, salts of organic acids, pure crystalline terpenes as well as oxygen-containing organic compounds. In addition, the lower limit of β-carotene detection in sulphate matrices using Raman microspectroscopy was estimated.  相似文献

Galileo was the first artificial satellite to orbit Jupiter. During its late orbital mission the spacecraft made two passages through the giant planet’s gossamer ring system. The impact-ionization dust detector on board successfully recorded dust impacts during both ring passages and provided the first in-situ measurements from a dusty planetary ring. During the first passage—on 5 November 2002 while Galileo was approaching Jupiter—dust measurements were collected until a spacecraft anomaly at 2.33RJ (Jupiter radii) just 16 min after a close flyby of Amalthea put the spacecraft into a safing mode. The second ring passage on 21 September 2003 provided ring dust measurements down to about 2.5RJ and the Galileo spacecraft was destroyed shortly thereafter in a planned impact with Jupiter. In all, a few thousand dust impacts were counted with the instrument accumulators during both ring passages, but only a total of 110 complete data sets of dust impacts were transmitted to Earth. Detected particle sizes range from about 0.2 to 5 μm, extending the known size distribution by an order of magnitude towards smaller particles than previously derived from optical imaging [Showalter, M.R., de Pater, I., Verbanac, G., Hamilton, D.P., Burns, J.A., 2008. Icarus 195, 361-377; de Pater, I., Showalter, M.R., Macintosh, B., 2008. Icarus 195, 348-360]. The grain size distribution increases towards smaller particles and shows an excess of these tiny motes in the Amalthea gossamer ring compared to the Thebe ring. The size distribution for the Amalthea ring derived from our in-situ measurements for the small grains agrees very well with the one obtained from images for large grains. Our analysis shows that particles contributing most to the optical cross-section are about 5 μm in radius, in agreement with imaging results. The measurements indicate a large drop in particle flux immediately interior to Thebe’s orbit and some detected particles seem to be on highly-tilted orbits with inclinations up to 20°. Finally, the faint Thebe ring extension was detected out to at least 5RJ, indicating that grains attain higher eccentricities than previously thought. The drop interior to Thebe, the excess of submicron grains at Amalthea, and the faint ring extension indicate that grain dynamics is strongly influenced by electromagnetic forces. These findings can all be explained by a shadow resonance as detailed by Hamilton and Krüger [Hamilton, D.P., Krüger, H., 2008. Nature 453, 72-75].  相似文献

The Space Environment Viability of Organics (SEVO) experiment is one of two scientific payloads aboard the triple-cube satellite Organism/ORganic Exposure to Orbital Stresses (O/OREOS). O/OREOS is the first technology demonstration mission of the NASA Astrobiology Small Payloads Program. The 1-kg, 1000-cm3 SEVO cube is investigating the chemical evolution of organic materials in interstellar space and planetary environments by exposing organic molecules under controlled conditions directly to the low-Earth orbit (LEO) particle and electromagnetic radiation environment. O/OREOS was launched on November 19, 2010 into a 650-km, 72°-inclination orbit and has a nominal operational lifetime of six months. Four classes of organic compounds, namely an amino acid, a quinone, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), and a metallo-porphyrin are being studied. Initial reaction conditions were established by hermetically sealing the thin-film organic samples in self-contained micro-environments. Chemical changes in the samples caused by direct exposure to LEO radiation and by interactions with the irradiated microenvironments are monitored in situ by ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared (UV/VIS/NIR) absorption spectroscopy using a novel compact fixed-grating CCD spectrometer with the Sun as its light source. The goals of the O/OREOS mission include: (1) demonstrating key small satellite technologies that can enable future low-cost astrobiology experiments, (2) deploying a miniature UV/VIS/NIR spectrometer suitable for in-situ astrobiology and other scientific investigations, (3) testing the capability to establish a variety of experimental reaction conditions to enable the study of astrobiological processes on small satellites, and (4) measuring the chemical evolution of organic molecules in LEO under conditions that can be extrapolated to interstellar and planetary environments. In this paper, the science and technology development of the SEVO instrument payload and its measurements are described.  相似文献

The near-surface inorganic synthesis of molecular hydrogen (H2) is a fundamental process relevant to the origins and to the sustenance of early life on Earth and potentially other planets. Hydrogen production through the decomposition of water is thought to be a principal reaction that occurs during hydrothermal alteration of olivine, an iron-magnesium silicate abundant near planetary surfaces. We demonstrate that copious amounts of H2 are produced only when the olivine undergoing alteration (serpentinization) contains 1 to 50 mol% iron over a variety of planetary surface P-T conditions. This suggests that extrasolar Earth-like planets that are hosted by a star with iron contents up to two times the solar value could support life provided they are hydrothermally active and fall within the habitable zone around the star.  相似文献

We have determined the real and imaginary indices of refraction (n and k) for six iron oxide/oxyhydroxide phases—magnetite, maghemite, goethite, lepidocrocite, akaganéite, and ferrihydrite. A single crystal of magnetite was used to derive bulk n and k values from 100-2000 cm−1 (5-100 μm). Synthetic nanocrystalline samples of maghemite, goethite, lepidocrocite, akaganéite, and ferrihydrite were pressed into compact pellets used to determine bulk n and k values from 100-1200 cm−1 (8.33-100 μm). All values of n and k (the optical constants) were determined from specular reflectance spectra acquired at 2 cm−1 spectral sampling using classical Lorentz-Lorenz dispersion theory. In this paper, we present the optical constants of all six minerals and the oscillator parameters with which they were modeled. Use of these optical constants could aid in radiative transfer models of terrestrial dust as well as Mars, the Moon, and airless bodies in the Solar System.  相似文献

Three dimensional studies of convection in deep spherical shells have been used to test the hypothesis that the strong jet streams on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune result from convection throughout the molecular envelopes. Due to computational limitations, these simulations must be performed at parameter settings far from jovian values and generally adopt heat fluxes 5-10 orders of magnitude larger than the planetary values. Several numerical investigations have identified trends for how the mean jet speed varies with heat flux and viscosity in these models, but no previous theories have been advanced to explain these trends. Here, we show using simple arguments that if convective release of potential energy pumps the jets and viscosity damps them, the mean jet speeds split into two regimes. When the convection is weakly nonlinear, the equilibrated jet speeds should scale approximately with F/ν, where F is the convective heat flux and ν is the viscosity. When the convection is strongly nonlinear, the jet speeds are faster and should scale approximately as (F/ν)1/2. We demonstrate how this regime shift can naturally result from a shift in the behavior of the jet-pumping efficiency with heat flux and viscosity. Moreover, both Boussinesq and anelastic simulations hint at the existence of a third regime where, at sufficiently high heat fluxes or sufficiently small viscosities, the jet speed becomes independent of the viscosity. We show based on mixing-length estimates that if such a regime exists, mean jet speeds should scale as heat flux to the 1/4 power. Our scalings provide a good match to the mean jet speeds obtained in previous Boussinesq and anelastic, three-dimensional simulations of convection within giant planets over a broad range of parameters. When extrapolated to the real heat fluxes, these scalings suggest that the mass-weighted jet speeds in the molecular envelopes of the giant planets are much weaker—by an order of magnitude or more—than the speeds measured at cloud level.  相似文献

We have performed a numerical simulation to analyze the energy spectra of escaping planetary O+ and O2+ ions at Mars. The simulated time-energy spectrograms were generated along orbit no. 555 (June 27, 2004) of Mars Express when its Ion Mass Analyzer (IMA)/ASPERA-3 ion instrument detected escaping planetary ions. The simulated time-energy spectrograms are in general agreement with the hypothesis that planetary O+ and O2+ ions far from Mars are accelerated by the convective electric field. The HYB-Mars hybrid model simulation also shows that O+ ions originating from the ionized hot oxygen corona result in a high-energy (E>1 keV) O+ ion population that exists very close to Mars. In addition, the simulation also results in a low-energy (E<0.1 keV) planetary ion population near the pericenter. In the analyzed orbit, IMA did not observe a clear high-energy planetary ion or a clear low-energy planetary ion population near Mars. One possible source for this discrepancy may be the Martian magnetic crustal anomalies because MEX passed over a strong crustal field region near the pericenter, but the hybrid model does not include the magnetic crustal anomalies.  相似文献

We describe current progress in the development of a prototype wide field‐of‐view soft X‐ray imager that employs Lobster‐eye optics and targets heliophysics, planetary, and astrophysics science. The prototype will provide proof‐of‐concept for a future flight instrument capable of imaging the entire dayside magnetosheath from outside the magnetosphere. The LIDAR instrument operating from the surface of Mars on the Phoenix Mission measured vertical profiles of atmospheric dust and water ice clouds at temperatures around −65 °C. An equivalent lidar system was utilized for measurements in the atmosphere of Earth where dust and cloud conditions are similar to Mars. Coordinated aircraft in situ sampling provided a verification of lidar measurement and analysis methods and also insight for interpretation of lidar derived optical parameters in terms of the dust and cloud microphysical properties. It was found that the vertical distribution of airborne dust above the Australian desert is quite similar to what is observed in the planetary boundary layer above Mars. Comparison with the in situ sampling is used to demonstrate how the lidar derived optical extinction coefficient is related to the dust particle size distribution. The lidar measurement placed a constraint on the model size distribution that has been used for Mars. Airborne lidar measurements were also conducted to study cirrus clouds that form in the Earth’s atmosphere at a similar temperature and humidity as the clouds observed with the lidar on Mars. Comparison with the in situ sampling provides a method to derive the cloud ice water content (IWC) from the Mars lidar measurements.  相似文献

The thermo-mechanical properties of planetary surface and subsurface layers control to a high extent in which way a body interacts with its environment, in particular how it responds to solar irradiation and how it interacts with a potentially existing atmosphere. Furthermore, if the natural temperature profile over a certain depth can be measured in situ, this gives important information about the heat flux from the interior and thus about the thermal evolution of the body. Therefore, in most of the recent and planned planetary lander missions experiment packages for determining thermo-mechanical properties are part of the payload. Examples are the experiment MUPUS on Rosetta's comet lander Philae, the TECP instrument aboard NASA's Mars polar lander Phoenix, and the mole-type instrument HP3 currently developed for use on upcoming lunar and Mars missions. In this review we describe several methods applied for measuring thermal conductivity and heat flux and discuss the particular difficulties faced when these properties have to be measured in a low pressure and low temperature environment. We point out the abilities and disadvantages of the different instruments and outline the evaluation procedures necessary to extract reliable thermal conductivity and heat flux data from in situ measurements.  相似文献

We have developed a computer code that solves numerically the 1D heat transport equation for small planetary bodies consisting of silicate material and heated by 26Al. At the same time the bodies' accretion (with a size from 1 km—or smaller—to several hundred kilometers) is taken into account as radial growth. We find that the consideration of accretion is inevitable as it affects the thermal evolution resulting from heating by radioisotopes. Significant changes in thermal behavior are shown to occur in comparison with calculations that assume instantaneous accretion.  相似文献

Currently there are four operating near-UV imaging space telescopes, one of which is the Swift Ultra-Violet/Optical Telescope (UVOT). Although the UVOT was primarily built for observations of γ-ray bursts, it has become a powerful instrument for studying other types of UV and optical astronomical phenomena. Here we discuss the properties of the UVOT, summarize some of the science undertaken with the UVOT, and present other possible science goals for the UVOT that have not yet been pursued. We also discuss some lessons learned that apply to future UV telescopes.  相似文献

Out-of-field stray-light spots of the Herschel telescope optics relative to the PACS and SPIRE instrument apertures were modeled by ray tracing simulations with the Advanced Systems Analysis Program (ASAP, by Breault Research Organization) prior to launch. The predicted stray-light behaviour was verified by dedicated stray-light calibration observations in-flight. This resulted in a special feature of the Herschel Science Mission Planning Software, marking the sky positions of stray-light spots by the very bright infrared planetary sources Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, as well as the Moon, thus avoiding contamination of scientific photometric observations by out-of-field stray-light of these sources.  相似文献

We report narrowband (Δλ ≤ 10Å) imaging data obtained for the planetary nebula A 19 (PN G200.7+0.84) in continuing our programme of morphological study of planetary nebulae (PNe). Our deep survey through the Hα filter reveals a new nebula – probably a huge HII region –centred at R.A.(2000) = 6h59mn, DEC.(2000) = +14°40′.  相似文献

The sample of known exoplanets is strongly biased to masses larger than the ones of the giant gaseous planets of the Solar System. Recently, the discovery of two extrasolar planets of considerably lower masses around the nearby Stars GJ 436 and ρ Cancri was reported. They are like our outermost icy giants, Uranus and Neptune, but in contrast, these new planets are orbiting at only some hundredth of the Earth-Sun distance from their host stars, raising several new questions about their origin and constitution. Here we report numerical simulations of planetary accretion that show, for the first time through N-body integrations that the formation of compact systems of Neptune-like planets close to the hosts stars could be a common by-product of planetary formation. We found a regime of planetary accretion, in which orbital migration accumulates protoplanets in a narrow region around the inner edge of the nebula, where they collide each other giving rise to Neptune-like planets. Our results suggest that, if a protoplanetary solar environment is common in the Galaxy, the discovery of a vast population of this sort of ‘hot cores’ should be expected in the near future.  相似文献

An increasing body of evidence shows that, at the sub-km level, Saturn’s main A and B rings are dominated by an ever-changing pattern of elongated, canted structures known as self-gravity wakes. Best known for causing azimuthal variations in the rings’ reflectivity, these structures also have a profound influence on how the transmission of the rings varies with both longitude and opening angle, B (Colwell et al. [2006] Geophys. Res. Lett. 33, 7201; Colwell et al. [2007] Icarus 190, 127-144; Hedman et al. [2007] Astron. J. 133, 2624-2629). We use data from three stellar occultations observed by Cassini’s Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) to measure the transmission of the rings as a function of B, when viewed parallel to the wakes. These data are used to constrain properties of the self-gravity wakes as a function of radius across the A and B rings: specifically the fractional width of the gaps between the wakes, G/λ, and the average normal optical depth in the gaps, τG. We find that the overall normal optical depth of the rings, τn is primarily controlled by G/λ, which varies between <0.05 and ∼0.70 in the A and B rings. The gaps, however, are not completely empty, being filled by material — possibly cm-sized ring particles — with an average normal optical depth which varies from 0.12 to ∼0.4. In addition to regional variations, local variations in τG are seen in the regular structure which dominates the inner B ring, and in the environs of strong density waves in the A ring. The same model applied to the lower optical depth Cassini Division reveals very little evidence of self-gravity wakes, except where τn exceeds ∼0.25.  相似文献

The Fresnel Diffractive Imager concept is proposed for space borne astronomical imaging at Ultra-Violet wavelengths, using diffractive focalization. The high angular resolution and high dynamic range provided by this new concept makes it an ideal tool to resolve circumstellar structures such as disks or jets around bright sources, among them, pre-main sequence stars and young planetary disks. The study presented in this paper addresses the following configuration of Fresnel diffractive imager: a diffractive array 4 m large, with 696 Fresnel zones operating in the ultra-violet domain. The diffractive arrays are opaque foils punched with a large number of void subapertures with carefully designed shapes and positions. In the proposed space missions, these punched foils would be deployed in space. Depending on the size of the array and on the working spectral band, the focal length of such imagers will range from a few kilometers to a few tens of kilometers. Thus, such space mission requires a formation flying configuration for two satellites around the L2 Sun-Earth Lagragian point. In this article, we investigate numerically the potential of Fresnel arrays for imaging circumstellar dust environments. These simulations are based upon simple protostellar disk models, and on the computed optical characteristics of the instrument. The results show that protoplanetary disks at distances up to a few thousand parsecs can be successfully studied with a 4 m aperture Fresnel imager in the UV.  相似文献

The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) has been studied as a space mission concept by the European Space Agency in the context of the M3 selection process. Through direct measurement of the atmospheric chemical composition of hundreds of exoplanets, EChO would address fundamental questions such as: What are exoplanets made of? How do planets form and evolve? What is the origin of exoplanet diversity? More specifically, EChO is a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large, diverse and well-defined planetary sample within its four to six year mission lifetime. In this paper we use the end-to-end instrument simulator EChOSim to model the currently discovered targets, to gauge which targets are observable and assess the EChO performances obtainable for each observing tier and time. We show that EChO would be capable of observing over 170 relativity diverse planets if it were launched today, and the wealth of optimal targets for EChO expected to be discovered in the next 10 years by space and ground-based facilities is simply overwhelming. In addition, we build on previous molecular detectability studies to show what molecules and abundances will be detectable by EChO for a selection of real targets with various molecular compositions and abundances. EChO’s unique contribution to exoplanetary science will be in identifying the main constituents of hundreds of exoplanets in various mass/temperature regimes, meaning that we will be looking no longer at individual cases but at populations. Such a universal view is critical if we truly want to understand the processes of planet formation and evolution in various environments. In this paper we present a selection of key results.
