An attempt is made to determine the spatial location of the main source of short-period comet nuclei. Numerical calculations for the orbital evolution of Jupiter family comets, medium-period comets, and Centaurs are used to show that the orbits of small solar system bodies tend to evolve in the direction of increasing semimajor axes. This relates to bodies that can experience encounters with planets and whose orbital evolution is shaped by gravitational perturbations. It is concluded that there is good reason to search for the main source of the nuclei of Jupiter family comets at distances of 6 AU or less from the sun.  相似文献

Öpik's assumptions on the geometry of particle trajectories leading to and through planetary close encounters are used to compute the distribution of changes in heliocentric orbital elements that result from such encounters for a range of initial heliocentric orbits. Behaviour at encounter is assumed to follow two-body (particle—planet) gravitational scattering, while before and after encounter particle motion is only governed by the force of the Sun. Derivation of these distributions allows precise analysis of the probability of various outcomes in terms of the physical characteristics of the bodies involved. For example, they allow an explanation and prediction of the asymmetry of the extreme energy perturbations for different initial orbits. The formulae derived here may be applied to problems including the original accumulation of planets and satellites, and the continuing evolution of populations of small bodies, such as asteroids and comets.  相似文献

The mean orbital evolution of long-period comets for 16 representative initial orbits to short-period comets is calculated by a Monte Carlo method. First, trivariate perturbation distributions of barycentric Kepler energy, total angular momentum, and its z component in single encounters of comets with Jupiter are obtained numerically. Their characteristics are examined in detail and the distributions are found to be simple, symmetric, and easy to handle. Second, utilizing these distributions, we have done trivariate Monte Carlo simulations of the orbital evolution of long-period comets, with special emphasis on high-inclination orbits. About half of the 16 initial orbits are traced up to 5000 returns. For each of these orbits, the mean values of semimajor axis, perihelion distance, and inclination; their standard deviations, survival, and capture rates; as well as time scales of orbital evolution are calculated as functions of return number. Survival rates of the initial orbits with high inclination (~90°) and small perihelion distance (~1–2 AU) have been found to be only two or three times smaller than those of the main-source orbits of short-period comets established quantitatively by Everhart. The time scales of orbitsl evolution of the former, however, are nearly 10 times longer than the latter. There is a general trend that, for smaller perihelion distance, the survival efficiency becomes higher. The results of this paper should be considered a basis for a succeeding paper (Paper II) in which the physical lifetime of comets will be determined, and a comparison with the orbital data will be done.  相似文献

Radio noise observations at frequencies of 0·700 Mc and 2·200 Mc were made at altitudes between 3000 and 11,000 km from a Blue Scout Jr. high-altitude rocket probe on 30 July 1963. A steady background flux of (7·5−3+6) × 10−19 W m−2)(c/s)−1 at 0·700 Mc and (1·8+1.0−0.5 × 10−19 W m−2 (c/s)−1 at 2·200 Mc was observed. Assuming a galactic origin of the observed fluxes at both frequencies, the averaged sky brightnesses are b(0·700 Mc) = (6−3+5) × 10−20 W m−2 (c/s)−1 sr−1b(2·200 Mc) = (1.4+1.0−0.5 × 10−20 W m−2 (c/s)−1 sr−1 The observed brightness at 2·200 Mc is in reasonable agreement with the results of other observers. The apparent brightness at 0·700 Mc is, however, greater than was expected from previous observations. An alternative source of the 0·700 Mc flux in the terrestrial exosphere, as well as characteristics of several noise bursts observed during the flight, is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Using extensive N-body simulations we estimate redshift space power spectra of clusters of galaxies for different cosmological models (SCDM, TCDM, CHDM, ΛCDM, OCDM, BSI, τCDM) and compare the results with observational data for Abell–ACO clusters. Our mock samples of galaxy clusters have the same geometry and selection functions as the observational sample which contains 417 clusters of galaxies in a double cone of galactic latitude |b|>30° up to a depth of 240 h−1 Mpc. The power spectrum has been estimated for wave numbers k in the range 0.03k0.2 h Mpc−1. For k>kmax0.05 h Mpc−1 the power spectrum of the Abell–ACO clusters has a power-law shape, P(k)∝kn, with n≈−1.9, while it changes sharply to a positive slope at k<kmax. By comparison with the mock catalogues SCDM, TCDM (n=0.9), and also OCDM with Ω0=0.35 are rejected. Better agreement with observation can be found for the ΛCDM model with Ω0=0.35 and h=0.7 and the CHDM model with two degenerate neutrinos and ΩHDM=0.2 as well as for a CDM model with broken scale invariance (BSI) and the τCDM model. As for the peak in the Abell–ACO cluster power spectrum, we find that it does not represent a very unusual finding within the set of mock samples extracted from our simulations.  相似文献

We further discussed the Modified Mean Field Theory proposed in [1,2]. We found that this model has a new solution ml = 2; adding -meson, we calculated the symmetric energy of nuclear matter a4; with the new parameters we calculated the equations of state with and without the addition of -meson; we compared the two; we also compared with the results for ml = 4.3; we made a preliminary theoretical investigation of the form of the vector meson mean field using the two-body correlation function; lastly, using the structural equation of neutron star we calculated the maximum mass for the various equations of state. The results are:
MMFT-2 (ml = 2): Mmax = 2.22M (without -meson) Mmax = 2.27M (with -meson)
MMFT-1 (ml = 4.3): Mmax = 1.69M (without -meson) Mmax = 1.89M (with -meson)

This paper studies the dynamical evolution of 97 Jupiter-family comets over an 800-year time period. More than two hundred encounters with Jupiter are investigated, with the observed comets moving during a certain period of time in an elliptic jovicentric orbit. In most cases this is an ordinary temporary satellite capture of a comet in Everhart??s sense, not associated with a transition of the small body into Jupiter??s family of satellites. The phenomenon occurs outside the Hill sphere with comets with a high Tisserand constant relative to Jupiter; the comets?? orbits have a small inclination to the ecliptic plane. An analysis of 236 encounters has allowed the determination within the planar pair two-body problem of a region of orbits in the plane (a, e) whose semimajor axes and eccentricities contribute to the phenomenon under study. Comets with orbits belonging to this region experience a temporary satellite capture during some of their encounters; the jovicentric distance function has several minima; and the encounters are characterized by reversions of the line of apsides and some others features of their combination that are intrinsic to comets in this region. Therefore, this region is called a region of comets with specific features in their encounters with Jupiter. Twenty encounters (out of 236), whereby the comet enters an elliptic jovicentric orbit in the Hill sphere, are identified and investigated. The size and shape of the elliptic heliocentric orbits enabling this transition are determined. It is found that in 11 encounters the motion of small bodies in the Hill sphere has features the most important of which is multiple minima of the jovicentric distance function. The study of these 20 encounters has allowed the introduction of the concept of temporary gravitational capture of a small body into the Hill sphere. An analysis of variations in the Tisserand constant in these (20) encounters of the observable comets shows that their motion is unstable in Hill??s sense.  相似文献

The orbital stochasticity of comets P/Ciffréo (1985 XVI) and P/Maury (1985 VI), at the present time near the 5/3 and 4/3 resonances with Jupiter, is investigated using Lyapunov Characteristic Indicators. First results indicate a strong stochastic behaviour for the two comets, mainly induced by encounters with Jupiter, which looks roughly like the behaviour of the group of comets in 1/1 resonance with Jupiter.  相似文献

The evolution of the cosmic ray primary composition in the energy range 106–107 GeV (i.e. the “knee” region) is studied by means of the e.m. and muon data of the Extensive Air Shower EAS-TOP array (Campo Imperatore, National Gran Sasso Laboratories). The measurement is performed through: (a) the correlated muon number (Nμ) and shower size (Ne) spectra, and (b) the evolution of the average muon numbers and their distributions as a function of the shower size. From analysis (a) the dominance of helium primaries at the knee, and therefore the possibility that the knee itself is due to a break in their energy spectrum (at EkHe=(3.5±0.3)×106 GeV) are deduced. Concerning analysis (b), the measurement accuracies allow the classification in terms of three mass groups: light (p,He), intermediate (CNO), and heavy (Fe). At primary energies E0≈106 GeV the results are consistent with the extrapolations of the data from direct experiments. In the knee region the obtained evolution of the energy spectra leads to: (i) an average steep spectrum of the light mass group (γp,He>3.1), (ii) a spectrum of the intermediate mass group harder than the one of the light component (γCNO2.75, possibly bending at EkCNO≈(6–7)×106 GeV), (iii) a constant slope for the spectrum of the heavy primaries (γFe2.3–2.7) consistent with the direct measurements. In the investigated energy range, the average primary mass increases from lnA=1.6–1.9 at E01.5×106 GeV to lnA=2.8–3.1 at E01.5×107 GeV. The result supports the standard acceleration and propagation models of galactic cosmic rays that predict rigidity dependent cut-offs for the primary spectra of the different nuclei. The uncertainties connected to the hadronic interaction model (QGSJET in CORSIKA) used for the interpretation are discussed.  相似文献

We systematically investigate the encounters between the Sun and neighbouring stars and their effects on cometary orbits in the Oort cloud, including the intrinsic one with the star Gl 710 (HIP 89 825), with some implications to stellar and cometary dynamics. Our approach is principally based on the combination of a Keplerian‐rectilinear model of stellar passages and the Hipparcos Catalogue (ESA 1997). Beyond the parameters of encounter, we pay particular attention to the observational errors in parallaxes and stellar velocities, and their propagation in time. Moreover, as a special case of this problem, we consider the collision probability of a star passing very closely to the Sun, taking also into account the mutual gravitational attraction between the stars. In the part dealing with the influence of stellar encounters on the orbital elements of Oort cloud comets, we derive new simple formulae calculating the changes in the cometary orbital elements, expressed as functions of the Jeans impulse formula. These expressions are then applied to calculate numerical values of the element changes caused by close encounters of neighbouring stars with some model comets in the Oort cloud. Moreover, the general condition for an ejection of comets from the cloud effected by a single encounter is derived and discussed.  相似文献

In the context of the survival of periodic comets of different origins, rotational breakup and tidal disruption could be important, especially of the short period comets injected from the Kuiper belt. This is because long-period comets from the distant Oort cloud tend to be subject to thermal stress and volatile 'explosion' far more severely. A simple calculation using the Öpik method of random planetary close encounters was performed to estimate the probability of tidal disruption of comets and scattered Kuiper belt objects (SKBOs) during their orbital migration. It was found that a large fraction of the short period comets and SKBOs might have been internally fragmented by single or multiple close encounters with the outer planets.  相似文献

Although the common genetic origin of the Kreutz family of Sun-grazing comets has generally been accepted, there remains uncertainty with regard to genetic identity among other groups of comets whose orbital elements are nearly alike. Porter has listed a number of such grouds and Öpik has made a statistical study of the orbits of 472 comets with aphelion distance beyond Saturn. He lists 97 groups that show similarities among their three angular elements. He calculates an overall probability of some 10?39 that these similarities could have occurred by chance, and thus concludes that 60% or more of such comets fall into genetic groups containing from two to seven members. This paper explores the statistical reality of Öpik's groups utilizing the Monte Carlo method of statistics as well as ordinary probability theory. The conclusion is reached that except for a few pairs the similarity among orbital elements within the groups is no greater than random expectation.  相似文献

Examination of thermal plasma data obtained by low-altitude satellite measurements indicates that the intersection of the cusp in the dayside magnetosphere with the topside ionosphere creates a distinct plasma geometry at low altitudes. This region consists of one or two plasma discontinuities with steep boundaries. As a result of the plasma structuring in the cusp which commonly takes place in the winter hemisphere, the propagation of compressional surface MHD waves is supported. This point is illustrated by an analysis of the polarization state of compressional surface MHD waves propagating along a plasma layer with thickness a and ambient magnetic field B0 parallel to the interfaces. The results obtained are applicable to the case of a single interface, which is derived in the limit a → ∞. In the general case the polarization of the compressional surface MHD waves in the plane transverse to the magnetic field B0 is elliptical. This feature of the polarization state of the compressional surface modes does not follow from the former analysis by Edwin and Roberts (1982, Solar Phys. 76, 239) for a magnetic slab, because the disturbance components parallel to the interfaces and perpendicular to the magnetic field B0 have not been examined. Although the absence of these components does not prove to be essential for deriving the exact dispersion equation for arbitrary wave directions of the surface modes, they must be included when considering polarization states. The surface mode polarization in the plasma layer changes its sense three times: at interfaces X = 0 and X = a and in the middle plane X = a/2. For the symmetrical (sausage) mode the wave disturbance component bn transverse (normal) to the interfaces becomes zero in the middle plane; for the asymmetrical (kink) mode, the component bt parallel to the interfaces and transverse to the ambient magnetic field is zeroed in the same plane. For a moving observer such as a satellite the polarization patterns which might be recorded change, depending on the velocity of the observer and the angles at which the layered cusp is traversed. An essential feature in the polarization of the compressional surface MHD modes is the presence of jumps in the magnetic disturbance component bt at the interfaces. These jumps disappear only for propagation along the ambient magnetic field. In this particular case the component bt vanishes and then the surface modes are undistinguishable from the body modes.  相似文献

At the beginning of this century, the SOHO space observatory discovered near-Sun comets with perihelion distances q ≈ 0.05 AU, which remained observable over several close encounters with the Sun. This became one of the surprises in studying the small bodies of the Solar System. Currently, there are objects that have already been observed in four (342P) and five (321P, 322P, and 323P) apparitions. In the present work, the estimates of nongravitational effects are obtained for these objects based on the pair-wise linkage of the apparitions. The calculations show that the observations of these objects are poorly represented if solely the gravitational forces are considered. The magnitude of nongravitational effects in the semimajor axis noticeably changes with time. The motion of all comets is significantly affected by the components of nongravitational forces that are perpendicular to the orbital plane.  相似文献

To study the climatological role of ozone in the Precambrian atmosphere and the consequences of its reduction for the ultraviolet environment of the early biosphere, a coupled one-dimensional radiative-convective and photochemical model has been developed. Oxygen levels between 10−5 and 1 time the present atmospheric level (PAL) are considered. It is shown that when the ice-albedo feedback is taken into account, relatively important temperature decreases are associated with the ozone changes linked to the progressive decrease of the oxygen level from 1 PAL to smaller values.

A similar study is performed for enhanced atmospheric CO2 pressures (Pco2). In these conditions, the ozone column is increased at low O2 concentrations with respect to the Pco2 = 1 PAL case. Consequently, the larger CO2 concentration in the ancient atmosphere could have contributed to strengthen the ultraviolet screening of ozone. The surface temperature response to the ozone decrease, as well as the thermal profiles are also analyzed in these CO2-rich models. A possible evolutionary scenario of atmospheric O2 and CO2 is discussed.

The consequences of these calculations for the ultraviolet environment of the primitive biosphere is discussed with a quantitative model calculating bacterial surviving rates. According to this model, the minimum ozone column being tolerable by unprotected bacteria would fall between 1 × 1018 and 4 × 1018 cm−2, depending on the bacterial species considered and corresponding to an O2 level somewhat lower than 10−2 PAL. For the coccoid blue-green alga Agmenellum quadruplicatum, this minimum ozone column would be of 4.5 × 1018, a value which is only slightly less than the presently observed column in the spring time ozone hole of Antarctica.  相似文献

The large-scale structure associated with the 2′N HNCO peak in Sgr B2 [Minh, Y.C., Haikala, L., Hjalmarson, Å., Irvine, W.M., 1998. ApJ 498, 261 (Paper I)] has been investigated. A ring-like morphology of the HNCO emission has been found; this structure may be colliding with the Principal Cloud of Sgr B2. This “HNCO Ring” appears to be centered at (l,b) = (0.7°,−0.07°), with a radius of 5 pc and a total mass of 1.0 × 105 to 1.6 × 106 M. The expansion velocity of the Ring is estimated to be 30–40 km s−1, which gives an expansion time scale of 1.5 × 105 year. The morphology suggests that collision between the Ring and the Principal Cloud may be triggering the massive star formation in the Sgr B2 cloud sequentially, with the latest star formation taking place at the 2′N position. The chemistry related to HNCO is not certain yet, but if it forms mainly via reaction with the evaporated OCN from icy grain mantles, the observed enhancement of the HNCO abundance can be understood as resulting from shocks associated with the collision between the Principal Cloud and the expanding HNCO Ring.  相似文献

Jupiter‐family comets (JFCs) may often, closely and/or slowly approach Jupiter. A list of their close approaches within 0.21 AU from Jupiter between 1970 and 2030 is presented to determine the typical changes in some of their orbital elements and their relation to any triggered activity. A few JFCs from the list were temporary satellites of Jupiter. There are also several JFCs which originally had asteroidal provisional designations due to their low activity at discovery. But Jupiter is also approached by asteroids. The presented list of their approaches within 0.60 AU from Jupiter between 1960 and 2040, together with their orbital changes can be compared with the list of comets. Some of the orbital changes are large enough to cause an extremely low or short‐lived activity. Usually, quick and dedicated observations by large‐aperture telescopes are missing to confirm or refute it. Currently, the most important cometary candidate among Jupiter approaching asteroids is 2004 FY140. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The dynamics of two families of minor inner solar system bodies that suffer frequent close encounters with the planets is analyzed. These families are: Jupiter family comets (JF comets) and Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs). The motion of these objects has been considered to be chaotic in a short time scale, and the close encounters are supposed to be the cause of the fast chaos. For a better understanding of the chaotic behavior we have computed Lyapunov Characteristic Exponents (LCEs) for all the observed members of both populations. LCEs are a quantitative measure of the exponential divergence of initially close orbits. We have observed that most members of the two families show a concentration of Lyapunov times (inverse of LCE) around 50–100yr. The concentration is more pronounced for JF comets than for NEAs, among which a lesser spread is observed for those that actually cross the Earth's orbit (mean perihelion distance q < 1.05 AU). It is also observed that a general correspondence exists between Lyapunov times and the time between consecutive encounters. A simple model is introduced to describe the basic characteristics of the dynamical evolution. This model considers an impulsive approach, where the particles evolve unperturbedly between encounters and suffer ‘kicks’ in semimajor axis at the encounters. It also reproduces successfully the short Lyapunov times observed in the numerical integrations and is able to estimate the dynamical lifetimes of comets during a stay in the Jupiter family in correspondence with previous estimates. It has been demonstrated with the model that the encounters with the largest effect on the exponential growth of the distance between initially nearby orbits are neither the infrequent deep encounters, nor the frequent and far ones; instead, the intermediate approaches have the most relevant contribution to the error growth. Such encounters are at a distance a few times the radius of the Hill's sphere of the planet (e.g. 3). An even simpler model allows us to get analytical estimates of the Lyapunov times in good agreement with the values coming from the model above and the numerical integrations. The predictability of the medium‐term evolution and the hazard posed to the Earth by those objects are analysed in the Discussion section. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Oort cloud comets occasionally obtain orbits which take them through the planetary region. The perturbations by the planets are likely to change the orbit of the comet. We model this process by using a Monte Carlo method and cross sections for orbital changes, i.e. changes in energy, inclination and perihelion distance, in a single planet-comet encounter. The influence of all major planets is considered. We study the distributions of orbital parameters of observable comets, i.e. those which have perihelion distance smaller than a given value. We find that enough comets are captured from the Oort cloud in order to explain the present populations of short period comets. The median value of cos i for the Jupiter family is 0.985 while it is 0.27 for the Halley types. The results may explain the orbital features of short period comets, assuming that the active lifetime of a comet is not much greater than 400 orbital revolutions.  相似文献

The nearby (d=5.0 pc) brown dwarf LP 944-20 was observed with the XMM-Newton satellite on 07 January 2001. The target was detected with the Optical Monitor (V=16.736±0.081), but it was not detected during the ≈48 ks observation with the X-ray telescopes. We determine a 3σ upper limit for the X-ray emission from this object of LX<3.1×1023 ergs·s−1, equivalent to a luminosity ratio upper limit of log(LX/Lbol)≤−6.28. This measurement improves by a factor of three the previous Chandra limit on the quiescent X-ray flux. This is the most sensitive limit ever obtained on the quiescent X-ray emission of a brown dwarf. Combining the XMM-Newton data with previous ROSAT and Chandra data, we derive flare duty cycles as a function of their luminosities. We find that very strong flares [Log(LX/Lbol)>−2.5] are very rare (less than 0.7% of the time). Flares like the one detected by Chandra [Log(LX/Lbol)=−4.1] have a duty cycle of about 6%, which is lower than the radio flare duty cycle (13%). When compared with other M dwarfs, LP 944-20 appears to be rather inactive in X-rays despite of its relative youth, fast rotation and its moderately strong activity at radio wavelengths.  相似文献
