Embryos of the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, were exposed to concentrations of methylmercury (meHg) below those that can cause morphological abnormalities. After hatching, larvae were kept in clean water and tested periodically for ability to capture prey (Artemia salina) or for their swimming performance and predator avoidance. Embryonic exposure to 10 μg/liter meHg resulted in reduced prey capture ability by early larvae, measured as total Artemia caught in 1 and 5 min. However, older larvae recovered from the behavioral deficits, perhaps owing to a compensation for early CNS insult. Fish from a chronically polluted environment (Piles Creek (PC), a tributary of the Arthur Kill), previously shown to have high tolerance to the teratogenic effects of higher concentrations of meHg, proved to be less susceptible to these behavioral effects than fish from a relatively uncontaminated site (EH). Also, the PC control larvae captured prey far more effectively than the EH larvae, although they made more miscues. When tested for swimming performance after embryonic exposure to 10 μg/liter, EH larvae had increased performance when compared to controls. This effect was also transitory. The improved swimming performance did not correspond to improved ability to avoid predation by grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio). The increased swimming performance may correspond to greater total activity, making them more likely to attract the predator's attention and resulting in increased capture. Thus, negative, though temporary, effects were observed in both prey capture and predator avoidance after embryonic exposure to meHg.  相似文献

Adult Palaemonetes pugio were collected from two tidal creek systems, Piles Creek (PC), a mercury polluted estuary, and Big Sheepshead Creek (BSC), a relatively pristine creek. Adult killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus), a natural predator of P. pugio, were obtained from BSC. For each test, ten treated (0·01 mg/liter mercuric chloride (HgCl), or 0·01 mg/liter methylmercuric chloride (MeHg)), or control shrimp here introduced into a tank containing three fish. The time between capture of the first and second BSC HgCl treated shrimp was significantly faster (P < 0·05), as was the time between the first and second capture (P < 0·05) of MeHg treated BSC shrimp when compared with their respective controls. In addition, significantly more (P < 0·025) BSC HgCl treated shrimp were captured after 120 min. No significant difference existed between control and HgCl treated PC shrimp; however, significantly more PC MeHg treated shrimp were captured after 60 (P < 0·05) min when compared with their respective controls. These data suggest that PC shrimp, subjected to mercury in their natural environment, are more tolerant to the sublethal effects of both HgCl and MeHg. These data also suggest that behavioral studies can be very sensitive assays for determining the effects of sublethal concentrations of toxicants on populations of organisms.  相似文献

Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasi) larvae were exposed either directly to the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of crude oil or indirectly via oil-contaminated prey (OCP) (Artemia salina) for <- 28 days, to determine the relative effects of diet and water as routes of contamination. Larvae were affected rapidly by 0·9 ppm WSF, which caused high larval mortality, reduced swimming ability and rapid reductions in feeding rates. Larval length was significantly reduced by 0·7 ppm WSF in 7 days and by 0·3 ppm WSF within 14 days. The WSF exposure also caused similar reductions in larval weights. Highly contaminated prey (6 ppm prey exposure) caused significant mortality, but surviving larvae appeared robust. The OCP did not affect swimming, feeding, or growth. Exposure of larvae was not significantly extended by OCP, which rapidly depurated WSF in clean water (98% in 1 day). Therefore, OCP is probably not an important source of low molecular weight petroleum contamination to larval fish in the marine environment.  相似文献

The interaction of selenium with mercury was studied in the shrimp Palaemon elegans. The release of 203HgCl2 (5·0 μg Hg per gramme body weight) from shrimp pretreated with selenium (SeO2 doses of 1·97, 3·95 and 7·90 μg Se per gramme fresh weight) was significantly decreased compared with the control group to which only 5·0 μg Hg/g had been administered. In the presence of HgCl2 (5·0 μg Hg per gramme fresh weight) the release of 75Se also diminished significantly at the higher stable Se pretreated dose (7·90 μg Se/g) while, at a lower selenium concentration, the release was not statistically different. Analyses for stable Hg and Se confirmed the decrease in rate of selenium loss in the presence of mercury which had been demonstrated with radiotracers.A dose of 7·9 μg Se per gramme fresh weight injected 12 h before exposure of the shrimp to the various mercuric chloride solutions did not produce a significant difference in the 24 h LC50 compared with the group not pretreated with selenium. However, during exposure to mercury at 3·8 mg/litre, the median lethal time (LT50) for the shrimp pretreated for 4 days with sublethal selenium (6·9 and 10·5 mg Se/litre) was delayed (19·2 and 33·2 h) compared with the group which was not pretreated. The results are discussed in relation to the role of selenium in the acutely toxic effects of inorganic mercury.  相似文献

Interactions between cadmium and sulfhydryl-containing compounds in striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, were examined. Exposure to 10 mg Cd/liter for up to 6 weeks caused an increase in the acid-soluble thiol (AST) content of the liver. Although the AST concentration was elevated at 1·4 weeks, increases in the glutathione and cysteine contents were not observed until after 4 weeks of exposure. Homogenates of livers were fractionated on a Sephadex G-75 column. A homogenate of livers of mullet injected with 109Cd 2 days prior to sampling had an elution profile for thiols similar to controls. After 3 weeks exposure to 10 mg Cd/liter the 9400 MW thiol peak increased 3·6-fold and the peak with the same retention volume as glutathione increased 4·3-fold. Greater than 70% of the thiols in these two peaks were acid-soluble. In both experiments, almost all the cadmium was associated with the 9400 MW peak. The ratio in the 9400 MW peak declined from 14·1 (controls) to 3·2 after 3 weeks exposure. No cadmium was associated with glutathione in the bile.  相似文献

The predatory fish community and their prey in the Norman Rivere estuary, Gulf of Carpentaria Australia, are compared with the communities of other tropical inshore areas, to investigate patterns of predation in tropical inshore areas particularly in relation to penaeid prawns. Abiotic factors (turbidity, freshwater input) and diversity of habitat types affect the composition of both prey and predator communities, resulting in large differences in the communities of tropical inshore waters. The stomach contents of 2059 predatory fish from the Norman River estuary were analysed over four sampling trips in the wet and dry seasons. The stomachs of 61% (1255 fish) of 54 species contained a total of 676·2 g (dry weight) of food, while 39% (804 fish) were empty. Teleosts were the main component of the diet (by dry weight) of 13 of the 22 species analysed, followed by annelids for two species. Five species had only teleosts in their stomachs. Most predator species ate benthic or bentho-pelagic prey, while three species—Rhizoprionodon taylori, Scomberoides commersonianusandLeptobrama mulleri—ate mainly pelagic prey. Although 19 species ate some penaeids, onlyPolydactylus sheridaniate little else. This species,Lates calcariferandEleutheronema tetradactylumate 94·5% of all the penaeid prey and 97·9% of all the commercially important penaeid prey recorded in the study. Penaeid predation indices (calculated from gillnet catch rates, proportion of penaeids in the diet and a consumption rate of 3% body weight per day) were 0·23 g of penaeid per net-metre per day forP. sheridani, 0·15 forL. calcariferand 0·03 forE. tetradactylum. Commercially important penaeid predation indices were 0·11, 0·13 and 0·01, respectively. These values are intermediate between those previously recorded for the main penaeid predators in other inshore areas of the Gulf of Carpentaria (Embley River estuary and Groote Eylandt).  相似文献

The use of selected hematological and biochemical parameters as indicators of metal exposure in aquatic organisms was evaluated. The hematological and biochemical parameters examined include glucose, hematocrit and aminotransferase levels in golden shiners exposed to cadmium. Cadmium exposure produced significant alterations in the levels of glucose, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase; however, hematocrit was not altered by exposure to cadmium. In addition, the comparative activity of Na/K adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) was evaluated in the fathead minnow, golden shiner and bluegill sunfish. Basal Na/K ATPase activity was lowest in golden shiner (1·01 μmol Pi/mg protein/h) and highest in bluegill sunfish (1·45 μmol Pi/mg protein/h). While a stimulation of Na/K ATPase activity was observed at an exposure concentration of 1 μg Cd/liter in the fathead minnow and bluegill sunfish, inhibition of enzymatic activity was observed at higher exposure concentrations (10 and 100 μg Cd/liter). Gill Na/K ATPase activity in golden shiner was not significantly influenced by cadmium exposure. The observed insensitivity of ATPase in shiner may, in part, be related to higher background and accumulated concentrations of cadmium in gill tissue.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the long-term accumulation of either silver or copper from low concentrations in seawater by blue mussels, Mytilus edulis. Mussels raised from eggs in the laboratory to the age of 2·5 months (approximately 4·5 mm in length) were continuously exposed to 0, 1, 5 and 10μg/liter of either silver (nitrate) or copper (chloride) and sampled at 12, 18 and 21 months for growth studies, measurements of metal accumulation and histopathological examination.Whole-body soft tissues were analyzed for the presence of both silver and copper, as background levels of copper in the incoming seawater averaged 2–4 μg/liter. Mussels exposed to silver had accumulated significant amounts of silver only at the highest test concentration (10 μg/liter Ag) after 12 months, but at 18 and 21 months significant levels were accumulated at all three test concentrations. Mussels exposed to copper accumulated significant amounts of copper at 5 and 10 μg/liter Cu after all three sampling periods, but not at 1μg/liter. Silver-exposed animals also accumulated significantly greater amounts of copper than control animals. In a comparative study, field-collected juvenile mussels (approximately 16·1 mm in shell length) and adult mussels (approximately 53·4 mm in shell length) were exposed for 12 months to 0, 5, 25 and 50 μg/liter silver only and subsequently sampled for metal-accumulation analyses and growth measurements. Juvenile mussels accumulated significant amounts of silver at all test concentrations, with the exception of mussels exposed to 5 μg/liter Ag for 6 months. Copper accumulation in the silver-exposed juveniles was significant only at 50 μg/liter Ag after 6 months, but at all test concentrations after 12 months. Adult mussels exposed to silver accumulated significant levels of both silver and copper, but at somewhat lower levels than juveniles. In the growth study, silver had no effect on laboratory reared mussels at the highest concentration of 10 μg/liter tested, whereas copper at 10 μg/liter did appear to affect growth as early as 4 months after the start of experimental exposure. Field-collected juvenile mussels did show inhibition in growth after 6 months' exposure to 25 and 50 μg/liter Ag, with some growth occurring after 12 months. Adults also showed inhibition in growth after 6 months but not at 12 months.Histopathological examination of mussels exposed to either 5 or 10 μg/liter of copper for 18 months showed changes in the digestive diverticula, gastrointestinal tract, reproductive tract and muscle tissues. These changes were more noticeable in mussels exposed to 5 μg/liter Cu than in those exposed to 10 μg/liter. Mussels exposed to silver for 21 months showed yellowish to black particulate deposition in the basement membrane and connective tissue of the various organs and tissues. Silver deposition increased with increasing test concentration.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of adults of the marine calanoid copepod Centropages hamatus was studied in laboratory experiments with ciliates and phytoplankton as food sources. The ingestion rate of algal (flagellates, diatoms) and ciliate prey (oligotrichs) as a function of prey concentration could be described by a Holling type III functional response, with close to zero ingestion rates at concentrations below 5 µg C l− 1. In general, ingestion of ciliates was higher than ingestion of algae, and maximum feeding rates by adult males reached were half the feeding rates of adult females at prey concentrations exceeding 50 µg C l− 1. When diatoms and ciliates were offered together C. hamatus (both sexes) fed exclusively on ciliates as long as they contributed with more than 5% to the mixture. This indicates the capability of active prey selection and switching between suspension feeding and ambush predation. Therefore, the feeding behaviour of adult C. hamatus can be characterised as omnivorous with a preference for larger motile prey. This implies a trophic level above two, if there is a sufficient abundance of protozoan food available.  相似文献

After multiple autotomy (one chela and six walking legs) fiddler crabs (Uca pugilator) were exposed to zinc chloride, cadmium chloride, methylmercuric chloride or combinations of these metals. Zinc at 1, 3 and 5 ppm had a retarding effect on limb regeneration, which was amplified in water of reduced salinity. Methylmercury at 0·5 ppm and cadmium at 1·0 ppm have previously been found to retard regeneration. When crabs were exposed to meHg and Zn the effects were additive, both in sea water (30% salinity) and in water of reduced salinity (7–8%). However, when crabs were exposed to combinations of Zn and Cd the effects were antagonistic and the rate of regeneration was almost that of controls. In water of 7–8% salinity the Cd effect was greatly intensified and growth was almost totally prevented. The presence of Zn counteracted this and allowed growth and ecdysis to occur.  相似文献

To determine if avoidance of chlorinated seawater by fish resulted in physiological protection from toxicity, studies were carried out which assessed (a) changes in the routine oxygen consumption rate and (b) the ability of treated fish to successfully compete with untreated conspecifics for a limited food resource.Temperate marine damselfish, Chromis punctipinnis, were exposed to stepwise increasing levels of chlorinated seawater in a behaviour chamber and avoided total residual oxidant (TRO) levels greater than 0·15-0·16 mg/litre. Cumulative exposures ranged from the equivalent of 0·38-5·23 in at 1·0/litre TRO. One day after exposure, routine oxygen consumption rates were decreased by 25 to 45% from pre-exposure rates and were correlated with the cumulative oxidant exposure. One month post exposure, respiration rates returned to pre-treatment levels. This transient depression of the respiratory rate did not affect survival or growth of chlorine-treated fish which were forced to compete with untreated conspecifics for a restricted food supply.  相似文献

Neomysis mercedis were exposed to the rice herbicides molinate and thiobencarb, which have been detected in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Continuous-flow acute and chronic toxicity studies were performed. For thiobencarb, the 4-, 7- and 14-day LCsos were 304, 214 and 91 μg/liter, respectively. For molinate, these values were 9910, 2530, and 820 μg/liter, respectively. Mortality stabilized after 18 and 28 days exposure, respectively, for thiobencarb and molinate. The incipient lethal concentrations were 53 and 230 μg/liter, respectively. Joint toxicity studies indicated additive toxicity for the two chemicals. Chronic no observable effects concentrations (NOECs) were estimated at 3·2 and 25·6 μg/liter for thiobencarb and molinate, with measurable effects occurring at 6·2 and 45·2 μg/liter, respectively. Environmental monitoring data suggests that concentrations of these chemicals in the Delta prior to 1985 may have exceeded the threshold for chronic toxicity, under conditions of joint exposure. However, due to continued improvements in pesticide management practices, environmental concentrations decreased to approximately 30 percent of the chronic threshold for joint toxicity by 1988. Baseline data on growth and reproduction relevant to toxicity tests are also presented for this species.  相似文献

Observations were made of the location and duration of foraging by five species of shorebirds in relation to the tubes of Diopatra cuprea (Polychaeta). Infaunal abundances in sites with D. cuprea tubes exceeded those in surrounding tubefree areas (120 individuals vs 29 individuals per 0·01 m2, respectively). Of 112 shorebird foraging episodes observed only 4 were in the vicinity of D. cuprea tubes. Despite a greater abundance of prey items around worm tubes, shorebirds avoided feeding in such areas. D. cuprea tubes appear to provide an effective refuge for macrofauna from shorebird predation.  相似文献

Suspended particle dynamics were investigated in the Ogeechee River Estuary during neap tide in July 1996. Samples were operationally separated into ‘ truly suspended ’ (settling velocity <0·006 cm s−1) and ‘ settleable ’ (settling velocity >0·006 cm s−1) fractions over the course of a tidal cycle to determine whether these two fractions were comprised of particles with differing biological and chemical characteristics. Total suspended sediment, organic carbon and nitrogen, chlorophyll a and phaeopigment concentrations were measured in each fraction, as well as rates of bacterial hydrolytic enzyme activity [β-1,4-glucosidase (βGase) and β-xylosidase (βXase)]. The majority of the suspended sediment (by weight) was in the truly suspended fraction; all measured parameters were largely associated with this fraction as well. When compared to the settleable material, the truly suspended material was significantly higher in % POC (5·7±0·6 vs. 3·9±1·8), % chlorophyll (0·07±0·02 vs. 0·03±0·01), % phaeopigment (0·030±0·006 vs. 0·018±0·012), and weight-specific maximal uptake rates (Vmaxper mg suspended sediment) of both enzymes (1·8±0·4 vs. 0·7± 0·2 nmol mg−1 h−1βGase and 1·1±0·3vs . 0·3±0·2 nmol mg−1 h−1βXase), providing clear evidence for a qualitative distinction between the two fractions. These results are interpreted to mean that the more organic-rich, biologically active material associated with the suspended fraction is likely to have a different fate in this Estuary, as ‘ truly suspended ’ sediments will be readily transported whereas ‘ settleable ’ sediments will settle and be resuspended with each tide. These types of qualitative differences should be incorporated into models of particle dynamics in estuaries.  相似文献

To identify some specific effects of organic contaminants on fisheries in an urbanized estuary we compared the reproductive success of starry flounder from San Francisco Bay with concentrations of tissue contaminants and hepatic mixed-function oxidase (MFO) activity. We found significantly lower (P < 0·05) sediment concentrations of total identified polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the less urbanized San Pablo Bay (SP) area (Fig. 1) than in the more urbanized central bay (CB) stations (Table 1). For flounder in early gametogenesis (August and September) the SP fish (n = 20) had significantly lower (P < 0·01) liver concentrations of Aroclor 1260 (0·34 ± 0·14 μg/g) than those at the CB stations: Berkeley (BK, n = 20, 1·6 ± 1·6 μg/g); Oakland (OK, n = 16, 2·3 ± 2·8 μg/g); and Alameda (AL, n = 4, 2·2 ± 1 μg/g). A similar pattern existed for DDT concentrations: SP = 0·2 ± 0·16 μg/g; BK = 0·1 ± 0·34 μg/g; OK = 0·4 ± 0·53 μg/g; and AL = 0·4 ± 0·33 μg/g. Total PAHs in livers were as follows: SP = 0·14 μg/g; BK = 2·6 μg/g; OK = 1·4 μg/g; and AL = 14 μg/g. Although gonad index, liver index, and presence of fin rot are inversely related to aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity, healthy fish in a similar reproductive state have lower AHH activities in the SP area. For example, in August and September, 1984, mean AHH activities were as follows: SP = 203 ± 89, and CB = 355 ± 200 pmol 3-OH-B[a]P mg microsomal protein min. We found a log-linear relationship for AHH activity and its percent inhibition by 7,8-benzoflavone (10−4m) and only a few fish from SP showed enhanced AHH activity after addition of 7,8-benzoflavone. This suggests that most of the starry flounder in San Francisco Bay are induced.  相似文献

The effects on reproduction of single or chronic exposure to the direct-acting mutagen, radiation, were evaluated using Neanthes arenaceodentata as the model animal. In the first set of experiments, mated pairs were irradiated when oocytes were visible in the female and were given a single dose of either 0·5, 1·0, 2·0, 5·0, 10 or 50 Gy. In the second set of experiments, lifetime exposure was initiated upon the spawning of the P1 female and was terminated upon the spawning of the F1 female; the average total doses (0·55, 6·5 and 54 Cy) were delivered at a rate of 0·19, 2·1 or 17 mGyH−1. Our results on embryo abnormalities and mortalities indicated that lethal mutations were most likely induced in the germ cells and had an adverse effect on reproductive success by reducing the survival of early life stages. Except for those mated pairs exposed acutely to 10 or 50 Gy or exposed chronically to 17 mGyh−1, there was no evidence of gamete killing. However, evidence was obtained for mutagen-damage accumulation in developing gametes from continuous exposure to radiation.  相似文献

Midsummer (1 August) population estimates of about 2 million O-group plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) were derived for sandy bays around the Firth of Forth in 1979–1980. This is an order of magnitude less than similar estimates made for the Clyde Sea Area in 1973–1974. Autumn population estimates of 0·4–1·0 million fish were comparable to estimates by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for the area between the Scottish border and Flamborough Head (2·3 million for 1970 and 1973) which represented 4·8% (1973) to 5·3% (1970) of the total number of O-group fish on the English east coast.Largo Bay was the most important nursery area holding 25% of the total population. It is particularly well situated to receive newly metamorphosed plaice carried in water currents along the north side of the Forth from the spawning ground off Fife Ness. Plaice in the Forth are mainly distributed on fine to medium sandy beaches (186–480 μm), the mean number per haul in midsummer (D) being correlated with the median diameter (m.d. in μm) of the low water sediments by the equation: D=−45·7666+0·2327 m.d. (n=11,r=0·68,P<0·02 but>0·01).The shallow inshore water in sandy bays in the outer Firth was well mixed and more marine than estuarine (27·7–35·0‰). The correlation coefficient between fish density and water temperature was low, while that with salinity (S‰) was: D=6·1618+0·2238S (n=23,r=0·62,P<0·005).Regression analysis demonstrated that the relationship between the instantaneous mortality rate (Z) and the initial population density (Dp) was: Z×100=0·7480+0·0546dp (n=12,r=0·87,P<0·001).The mean mortality rate for the O-group plaice in the Forth nursery areas was 53% month−1.  相似文献

Long-term data assembled from a power station on the Thames estuary were used to model fluctuations in the abundance of pogge (Agonus cataphractus) as a function of estuarine environmental, seasonal and prey availability variables using multiple regression. Temperature was the most important determinant of abundance, with seasonal variables and changes in the relative abundance of age-0 dab, Limanda limanda, possibly as prey, also holding important consequences for pogge abundance. Pogge abundance was also moderately influenced by: salinity, flow, salinity-flow interactions, changes in the relative abundance of Dover sole, Solea solea, and a trend variable. Regular patterns of seasonal (spring/winter) occurrences were associated with the use of warmer estuarine waters to optimize growth and reproductive potential and/or correlated with inshore spawning migrations and the availability of prey species. Both mechanisms suggest opportunistic use of estuarine habitats by pogge. Available temperature-abundance relationships further suggest a well-defined estuarine thermal niche, with an optimum at 9·5 °C. There remains a requirement for improved information on the biology of pogge and factors governing the population dynamics of this important estuarine species.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of bromochlorinated estuarine water (ca. 20%) was determined for several estuarine organisms. The most sensitive species were oysters (Crassostrea virginica, larvae and juveniles) and copepods (Acartia tonsa) with 48-h LC50's of 0·10 to 0·21 mg BrCl/litre. Palaemonetes pugio was most tolerant with a 96-h LC50 of 0·70 mg BrCl/litre. The fish species tested (Menidia menidia, Brevoortia tyrannus and Leiostomus xanthurus) all had a 96-h LC50 of 0·21–0·23 mg BrCl/litre.The BrCl toxicity data are compared with Cl2 toxicity data for the same species. When the LC50's are expressed as equivalents per litre, BrCl is found to be two to four times less toxic than Cl2. The ranking of species in terms of sensitivity is the same for both disinfectants. Some data are provided concerning the decay rates of BrCl and Cl2 in estuarine water. BrCl was found to decay more rapidly than Cl2 at higher ammonia levels (0·25 mg NH4-N/litre). The question of chemical speciation is discussed with particular reference to the differential toxicities.  相似文献

The efficacy of sodium hexametaphosphate, when added to a formalin-Rose Bengal fixative solution, in improving the efficiency of benthic sample sorting by encouraging the disaggregation of silt-clay sediment has been investigated. Samples of estuarine mud (Mdφ = 6·1) from Damhead Creek, River Medway, were used for the analysis. A significant increase (23%; p < 0·01) in sieving efficiency was found in samples treated with concentrations of 1·24g/litre or more of sodium hexametaphosphate; treatments with higher concentrations than 1·24g/litre did not improve on this performance significantly. The use of 1·24g/litre sodium hexametaphosphate in an initial fixative/preservative solution is recommended as an economic and practical means of improving the efficiency of benthic sample sorting, without deleterious effects on the animal specimens in the sample.  相似文献
