Many relict rock glaciers and protalus lobes have been described in mountainous areas of the British Isles. This paper reviews their distribution, chronology, supposed origin and development, and places the research within current investigations and knowledge. Rock glaciers and protalus lobes are located in a number of different topographic locations and settings. They developed at the base of steep cliffs following the catastrophic failure of rock faces, at the base of scree slopes following the gradual accumulation of rock debris and in association with glaciers. Protalus lobes probably developed in response to the permafrost creep of talus material while rock glaciers formed through the deformation and sliding of large bodies of buried ice. Rock glaciers probably developed, or were last active, during the Younger Dryas, although the possibility exists that some of these landforms are Dimlington Stadial in age. The development of protalus lobes during the Younger Dryas suggests that precipitation levels were low and permafrost was widespread during this time. The lack of rock glaciers (sensu stricto) in the British Isles compared with other mountain areas is believed to be a consequence of the rock type and relative scarcity of weathered debris for their formation rather than a lack of suitable sites or appropriate environmental conditions. In order to determine the palaeoclimatic and palaeo‐permafrost conditions in the northern Japanese Alps in central Japan, the ages of rock glaciers were investigated by relative age dating techniques such as weathering‐rind thickness and Schmidt hammer measurements. The results of the relative age dating suggest that the formation of the investigated rock glaciers may have started during the early phase of the Late Glacial or around the onset of the Holocene. The lower limit of current discontinuous permafrost in the northern Japanese Alps, which is indicated by the terminus of the lowest active/inactive rock glacier, lies at 2530 m a.s.l., while that of discontinuous permafrost during the Late Glacial or early phase of the Holocene, which is indicated by the terminus of the lowest relict rock glacier, lies at 2220 m a.s.l. Therefore, the lower limit of discontinuous permafrost during these periods would have been at least about 300 m lower than that of the current discontinuous permafrost. Climatic and geomorphological conditions during the Late Glacial led to a change in the environment from a glacial environment to a periglacial (permafrost) environment in the current alpine zone of the northern Japanese Alps. Glaciers are an important element of the Earth system. Glaciers provide numerous, though poorly appreciated, ecological and economic benefits. However, glacial processes can also be hazards. Local glacial hazards include catastrophic floods from lakes impounded by glaciers and their moraines, landslides and debris flows induced by glacier thinning and retreat and permafrost thaw, and enhanced seismicity and volcanism due to large‐scale deglaciation. Regionally, rivers can be affected by changes in sediment supply from glacier forefields. Perhaps the greatest hazard that glaciers pose on a global scale of coastal erosion and flooding caused by sea‐level rise. If Earth's climate continues to warm, as scientists forecast, the rate of sea‐level rise will increase and some low‐lying coastal areas will be flooded by the end of this century.  相似文献

在阐述了与深部岩石力学性质相关的岩石流变学基本模型的基础上,探讨了深部岩石力学性质对温度、压力和岩石化学组分等因素的依赖关系。根据目前对深部岩石力学性质的认识,讨论了岩石流变学在研究大陆构造变形过程中所起的重要作用。有关研究结果表明:在运用理论分析和数值模拟方法揭示大陆岩石圈中变形的动力学机制时,合理的选用深部岩石的流变学模型是必须考虑的一个重要因素。  相似文献

The term “cryo-conditioning,” proposed by the authors for classifying specific landform association in periglacial landscapes, needs to be defined more precisely. A starting point could be the proper understanding of the term “Cryo-” in the various compound words found in various disciplines. This is also important for a correct understanding of the proposed concepts, since it concerns one of the most important processes in nature: the phase transition of water between solid and liquid. Cold-temperate transition surfaces in polythermal glaciers and at the permafrost base in their forelands can act as a specific hub between the glacial and periglacial domains.  相似文献

综观鄂西地区岩崩、滑坡、坍方和泥石流等地质灾害的成生,笔者认为大宇宙天体运动控制下的内动力和地质基础背景是其成生变形的主要因素,而与大宇宙天体运动有关的各种外动力条件的影响和变化及人类与生物对自然环境的影响和破坏,则是其成生发展的诱发因素。两种变量(即内、外动力)和天体运动的有机组合与变化趋势,使地质灾害成生的类型及其频度、强度、破坏(形变)特征及变形机制不尽相同,变形特征多样。在发生时间和灾害规模上多受天体运动变化规律所制约。据此可对地质灾害的预测、预报进行更深入地研究,并采取相应的防治措施。  相似文献

In the Schiantala Valley of the Maritime Alps, the relationship between a till-like body and a contiguous rock glacier has been analyzed using geomorphologic, geoelectric and ice-petrographic methodologies. DC resistivity tomographies undertaken in the till and in the rock glacier show the presence of buried massive ice and ice-rich sediments, respectively. Ice samples from a massive ice outcrop show spherical gas inclusions and equidimensional ice crystals that are randomly orientated, confirming the typical petrographic characteristics of sedimentary ice. The rock glacier formation began after a phase of glacier expansion about 2550 ± 50 14C yr BP. Further ice advance during the Little Ice Age (LIA) overrode the rock glacier root and caused partial shrinkage of the pre-existing permafrost. Finally, during the 19th and 20th centuries, the glacial surface became totally debris covered. Geomorphological and geophysical methods combined with analyses of ice structure and fabric can effectively interpret the genesis of landforms in an environment where glaciers and permafrost interact. Ice petrography proved especially useful for differentiating ice of past glaciers versus ice formed under permafrost conditions. These two mechanisms of ice formation are common in the Maritime Alps where many sites of modern rock glaciers were formerly occupied by LIA glaciers.  相似文献

Three sites with alleged relict rock glaciers are described from southern Faeroe Islands, in the North Atlantic Ocean. The rock glaciers represent both talus-derived and glacier-derived types and were most likely initiated during the late Weichselian. One of the rock glaciers apparently became unstable at some point during degradation of permafrost and was subsequently transformed by a landslide. The age of the rock glaciers are not known precisely, but a Younger Dryas age is suggested, partly by considering contemporary local equilibrium line altitudes. The climatic background for rock glacier initiation on the Faeroe Islands during the Younger Dryas is investigated, using various types of palaeoclimatic information. The potential of using relict rock glaciers in palaeoclimatic reconstructions is discussed, and their implications for estimates on air temperature, precipitation, permafrost, rock weathering and the contemporary extent of the Weichselian Faeroe Ice Cap is outlined. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Deep subpermafrost aquifers are highly climate-dependent, with the permafrost as an aquitard preventing groundwater recharge and discharge. A study from the high-arctic island of Spitsbergen, Svalbard, shows that during a glacial to interglacial phase, both the permafrost and the glacier regime will respond to climatic changes, and a glacier-fed groundwater flow system will vary accordingly. A full glaciation results in the melting of permafrost, and groundwater can flow through pores and fracture systems in the rocks and sediments below the temperate zones of glaciers. These groundwater flow systems will mainly be localized to fjords and valleys and form low-lying terrestrial springs when the relative sea level drops during deglaciation due to glacio-isostatic rise. During an interglaciation, permafrost develops and thickens and the groundwater recharge and discharge areas will thereby be gradually reduced to a minimum reached at the warmest part of an interglaciation. An already frozen spring system cannot reopen before the permafrost melts. Only groundwater springs related to permanently warm-based glacial ice will persist into the next glaciation. During a new glaciation, flow systems that terminated during the previous interglaciation may become revitalized if overridden by warm-based ice causing permafrost thawing.  相似文献

The fall of a meteorite near the town of Chelyabinsk is considered from the viewpoint of astronomy, and the major witness facts and entry characteristics (including the measured entry velocity and the height of the explosion) are analyzed. The aerodynamic phenomena that accompanied the entry of the meteorite in the atmosphere at an ultrasonic velocity and the origin of a shock wave that induced damage on the Earth’s surface are analyzed. The paper also reports the estimated frequency of the falls of celestial bodies depending on their size, and consequences of collisions of these bodies with the Earth. It is emphasized that studies of small bodies in the Solar System can provide insight into the origin of the protoplanetary disk and the processes that produced the planets. The studies of small bodies, such as the Chelyabinsk meteorite, are directly related to the problem of asteroid and comet impact hazard (ACIH). The paper reports the sizes of potentially hazardous celestial bodies whose monitoring requires the deployment of a network of specialized telescopes on the Earth to mitigate ACH and a system of space-based systems for the identification and monitoring of such bodies in near space.  相似文献

埃迪卡拉纪—寒武纪转折期是地质历史上的关键期,全球范围内普遍发育一套黑色岩系,包括硅质岩、泥岩和白云岩。在这套黑色岩系中下部,发育了不同厚度的硅质岩,尤其是在塔里木盆地西北缘,黑白燧石条带韵律性互层且硅质岩分布变化大,其成因对寒武系玉尔吐斯组优质烃源岩形成环境具有重要指示意义。本文以塔西北地区新柯地1井这套黑色岩系中硅质岩为研究对象,运用岩芯观察、镜下薄片鉴定、主微量元素和稀土元素分析,研究硅质岩与有机质的成因及其二者之间的共生机理,硅质岩较高的Ti、V、Y、Ba等元素含量、较低的δ30Si值(1. 2‰~0. 7‰)、明显的Ce负异常说明其硅质流体为热液来源,但是硅质岩不是热液脉体侵入形成,而是富含硅质的流体与冰冷的海水混合沉积而成,硅质岩沉积受温度、pH值、有机质等因素共同控制,有机质的存在可以促进硅质沉淀。同时系统地研究了黑白燧石条带韵律性互层的成因,白色层由纯的微晶石英组成,而黑色层由碎屑碳质颗粒、石英颗粒和碳质纹层组成,认为是微生物席活动的结果,硅质岩中黑白燧石层受冰期和间冰期控制。硅质岩中较高的Al2O3/(Al2O3+Fe2O3)比值和较低的Lan/Cen比值代表受陆源影响的大陆边缘沉积环境,结合古气候、海平面变化等信息,认为塔西北地区寒武系玉尔吐斯组硅质岩以及硅质页岩沉积于局限海湾或潟湖环境,为正确认识硅质页岩的形成环境和烃源岩的评价预测提供理论指导。  相似文献

Recent work in modern and ancient glacial environments has demonstrated the ability of cold-based glaciers to interact with permafrost. Geological evidence for glacier–permafrost interactions is revealed in Arctic regions where permafrost has persisted since deglaciation. Whilst similar interactions probably occurred near the margins of former ice sheets in the mid-latitudes, this interpretation is rarely applied to unfrozen glacigenic sequences. This review considers the extent to which this alternative hypothesis can explain two key aspects of the glaciotectonic sequences of North Norfolk that have traditionally been attributed to the deformation of unfrozen sediment. The substantial thickness (>10 m) of the pervasively deformed sequences and the preservation of stratified sand intraclasts within them are consistent with deformation at temperatures slightly below the pressure melting point (warm permafrost). Such deformation is also consistent with the pre-glacial environment, which was characterised by continuous permafrost. The hypothesis of deformation at sub-freezing temperatures should be considered more widely when interpreting glaciotectonically deformed, ice-marginal sequences in the mid-latitudes. The application of geological evidence to reconstruct basal thermal regimes beneath former glaciers would complement existing geomorphological inverse models and provide additional information to improve the parameterisation of subglacial processes in numerical ice-sheet models.  相似文献

Lobate talus slopes in the Deboullie Lakes Ecological Reserve (DLER) of northern Maine exhibit parabolic profiles characteristic of inactive and relict talus‐derived rock glaciers. Vegetated rock glacier surfaces suggest that the landforms are no longer active, and lobes comprising two DLER rock glaciers document periods of past growth. Observations of perennial subsurface ice are supported by datalogger temperature measurements, indicating that sporadic permafrost exists throughout the DLER. We compare the DLER rock glaciers, along with similar features elsewhere in New England and adjacent Québec, to the modern alpine permafrost distribution. Results indicate that a mean annual temperature cooling of ~6°C is required to promote active rock glacier growth. Ages of plant remains recovered from the basal sediments of a local pond constrain deglaciation to before 11 320 14C a BP, and core stratigraphy and organic content reveal that a periglacial environment persisted during the early postglacial era. Thus, we hypothesise that the DLER rock glaciers were active during Lateglacial time despite the lack of glacier activity in the region. We take this to suggest that north‐eastern US rock glaciers formed in response to mean annual temperatures skewed towards the frigid winters of the Younger Dryas chronozone.
