This paper describes a proposed high resolution soft X-ray and Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy mission to carry out a survey of Stellar and Galactic Environments (SAGE). The payload is based on novel diffraction grating technology which has already been proven in a sub-orbital space mission and which is ready to fly on a satellite platform with minimal development. Much of the technical detail of the instrumentation has been reported elsewhere and we concentrate our discussion here on the scientific goals of a SAGE base-line mission, demonstrating the scientific importance of high resolution spectroscopy in the Extreme Ultraviolet for the study of stars and the local interstellar medium.  相似文献

We present scientific program construction principles and a time allocation scheme developed for the World Space Observatory—Ultraviolet (WSO-UV) mission, which is an international space observatory for observation in UV spectral range 100–300 nm. The WSO-UV consists of a 1.7 m aperture telescope with instrumentation designed to carry out high resolution spectroscopy, long-slit low resolution spectroscopy and direct sky imaging. The WSO-UV Ground Segment is under development by Spain and Russia. They will coordinate the Mission and Science Operations and provide the satellite tracking stations for the project.  相似文献

Ultraviolet spectroscopy and imaging of comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) were obtained from a variety of space platforms from shortly after the discovery of the comet through perihelion passage. Observations with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spanned the range of 6.8 to 2.7 AU pre-perihelion, but IUE was decommissioned in September 1996 and HST was precluded from near-perihelion observations because of its solar avoidance constraint. In September 1996, observations were made by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) that showed the presence of soft X-rays offset from the optical center of the coma and provided a sensitive spectroscopic upper limit to the Ne/O abundance ratio. During the perihelion period NASA mounted a successful campaign of four sounding rockets that were launched at the White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, between March 25 and April 8, 1997. The payloads included long-slit spectroscopy and ultraviolet imaging polarimetry. In addition, Hale-Bopp was observed near perihelion by ultraviolet instruments on orbiting spacecraft that were designed for solar or terrestrial observations. Observations with HST, using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), installed during the February 1997 servicing mission, resumed in August 1997. Intercomparison of the ultraviolet observations and comparison with the results on gas composition and activity from ground-based visible, infrared and radio observations may permit the resolution of many discrepant results present in the literature. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The Extreme Ultraviolet Camera(EUVC) onboard the Chang'e-3(CE-3)lander is used to observe the structure and dynamics of Earth's plasmasphere from the Moon. By detecting the resonance line emission of helium ions(He+) at 30.4 nm, the EUVC images the entire plasmasphere with a time resolution of 10 min and a spatial resolution of about 0.1 Earth radius(RE) in a single frame. We first present details about the data processing from EUVC and the data acquisition in the commissioning phase, and then report some initial results, which reflect the basic features of the plasmasphere well. The photon count and emission intensity of EUVC are consistent with previous observations and models, which indicate that the EUVC works normally and can provide high quality data for future studies.  相似文献

The World Space Observatory Ultraviolet (WSO-UV) is the space mission that will grant access to the ultraviolet (UV) range in the post Hubble epoch. WSO-UV is equipped with instrumentation for imaging and spectroscopy and it is fully devoted to UV astronomy. In this article, we outline the WSO-UV mission model and present the current status of the project.  相似文献

Propagating disturbances are often observed in active region fan-like coronal loops. They were thought to be due to slow mode magnetohydrodynamic waves based on some of the observed properties. However, recent studies involving spectroscopy indicate that they could be due to high speed quasi-periodic upflows which are difficult to distinguish from upward propagating slow waves. In this context, we have studied a fan loop structure in the active region AR 11465 using simultaneous spectroscopic and imaging observations from the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer onboard Hinode and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory. Analysis of the data shows significant oscillations at different locations. We explore the variations in different line parameters to determine whether the waves or flows could cause these oscillations to improve the current understanding of the nature of these disturbances.  相似文献

Solar Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) imaging observation is an important measure for the researches of solar activities and coronal plasma physics. But the traditional EUV imager and spectrograph can hardly achieve simultaneously the high spectral resolution and wide field-of-view of solar imaging. This paper has designed a new type of solar EUV multi-band imager, by adopting a kind of slitless grating and grazing incidence structure, it can realize the solar full-disk imaging of high spectral and spatial resolution. The field-of-view of the imager can be as broad as 47′. The spectral resolution is 2×10?3nm per pixel, and the spatial resolution is 1.4′ per pixel. The temporal resolution of the solar full-disk is better than 60 s. The analysis of the solar full-disk spectral image and system response shows that the imager can observe the morphological evolutions of various solar activities, and can provide more comprehensive data for the researches of solar physics and space weather forecast.  相似文献

Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) is one of the payloads onboard AstroSat, India’s first multi-wavelength Astronomy mission. UVIT is primarily designed to make high resolution images in wide field, in three wavelength channels simultaneously: FUV (130–180 nm), NUV (200–300 nm) and VIS (320–550 nm). The intensified imagers used in UVIT suffer from distortions, and a correction is necessary for these to achieve good astrometry. In this article we describe the methodology and calculations used to estimate the distortions in ground calibrations.  相似文献

The new observations of the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Spectrometers on EUVE and the future high resolution observation by Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and SUMER on SOHO have suggested the revision of the Xray-EUV spectral code of the authors (1990) for optically thin plasmas. More accurate atomic data computations are now available and several lines have been added. Work is in progress to update the Xray-EUV code following the suggestions of the reviewers of the workshop on Atomic data assessment for SOHO held in Abingdon (March 1992). Special care is given to the highly ionized iron lines in the EUV spectral region.  相似文献

Some of the first observations obtained with the Naval Research Laboratory's Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrograph (S082A) during the first Skylab mission are presented and compared with magnetograms and other ground-based data. The instrument is a slitless objective-type grating spectrograph covering 170–630 Å and described in Solar Phys. 27, 251 (1972). Chromospheric network, loop prominences, active regions, a flare, limb brightening, XUV bright points, and coronal holes are among the phenomena shown and discussed.  相似文献

The Solar–Stellar Irradiance Comparison Experiment (SOLSTICE) and the Spectral Irradiance Monitor (SIM) on the Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) both measure the solar ultraviolet irradiance surrounding the Mg II doublet at 280 nm on a daily basis. The SIM instrument's resolution (1.1 nm) is similar to the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet instruments used to compute the standard NOAA Mg II index, while SOLSTICE's resolution is an order of magnitude higher (0.1 nm). This paper describes the technique used to calculate the index for both instruments and compares the resulting time series for the first 18 months of the SORCE mission. The spectral resolution and low noise of the SOLSTICE spectrum produces a Mg II index with a precision of 0.6%, roughly a factor of 2 better than the low-resolution index measurement. The full-resolution SOLSTICE index is able to measure short-timescale changes in the solar radiative output that are lost in the noise of the low-resolution index.  相似文献

A major, albeit serendipitous, discovery of the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory mission was the observation by the Extreme Ultraviolet Telescope (EIT) of large-scale extreme ultraviolet (EUV) intensity fronts propagating over a significant fraction of the Sun??s surface. These so-called EIT or EUV waves are associated with eruptive phenomena and have been studied intensely. However, their wave nature has been challenged by non-wave (or pseudo-wave) interpretations and the subject remains under debate. A string of recent solar missions has provided a wealth of detailed EUV observations of these waves bringing us closer to resolving the question of their nature. With this review, we gather the current state-of-the-art knowledge in the field and synthesize it into a picture of an EUV wave driven by the lateral expansion of the CME. This picture can account for both wave and pseudo-wave interpretations of the observations, thus resolving the controversy over the nature of EUV waves to a large degree but not completely. We close with a discussion on several remaining open questions in the field of EUV waves research.  相似文献

Examples from four main categories of solid-earth deformation processes are discussed for which the GOCE and GRACE satellite gravity missions will not provide a high enough spatial or temporal resolution or a sufficient accuracy. Quasi-static and episodic solid-earth deformation would benefit from a new satellite gravity mission that would provide a higher combined spatial and temporal resolution. Seismic and core periodic motions would benefit from a new satellite mission that would be able to detect gravity variations with a higher temporal resolution combined with very high accuracies.  相似文献

AXIOM (Advanced X‐ray Imaging Of the Magnetosphere) is a concept mission which aims to explain how the Earth's magnetosphere responds to the changing impact of the solar wind using a unique method never attempted before; performing wide‐field soft X‐ray imaging and spectroscopy of the magnetosheath, magnetopause and bow shock at high spatial and temporal resolution. Global imaging of these regions is possible because of the solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) process which produces elevated soft X‐ray emission from the interaction of high charge‐state solar wind ions with primarily neutral hydrogen in the Earth's exosphere and near‐interplanetary space (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A spectrum of Mars of unprecedented quality was obtained in the range of 904-1183 Å with a spectral resolution of 0.2 Å using the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. Besides marking the first detection of molecular hydrogen on Mars (Krasnopolsky and Feldman, Science 2001 294, 1914-1917), the spectrum also revealed many emission lines of H, O, N, C, Ar, He, N+, C+, and Ar+ and the bands of N2 and CO. The spectrum makes it possible to study the emission multiplet structures and the component ratios and to separate many of the blended lines. From the argon lines, we retrieved Ar mixing ratios of 1.5 and 1.3% at 150 and 130 km, respectively, in excellent agreement with the Viking mass spectrometric measurements of 1.6% in the lower atmosphere. The He 584-Å emission observed in second order also agrees with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer detection of He on Mars. The observed spectrum may be used as a database to study specific problems such as the dayglow excitation, radiative transfer, and composition in Mars' upper atmosphere.  相似文献

The NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), scheduled for launch in early 2010, incorporates a suite of instruments including the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE). EVE has multiple instruments including the Multiple Extreme ultraviolet Grating Spectrographs (MEGS) A, B, and P instruments, the Solar Aspect Monitor (SAM), and the Extreme ultraviolet SpectroPhotometer (ESP). The radiometric calibration of EVE, necessary to convert the instrument counts to physical units, was performed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility (SURF III) located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This paper presents the results and derived accuracy of this radiometric calibration for the MEGS A, B, P, and SAM instruments, while the calibration of the ESP instrument is addressed by Didkovsky et?al. (Solar Phys., 2010, doi: 10.1007/s11207-009-9485-8 ). In addition, solar measurements that were taken on 14 April 2008, during the NASA 36.240 sounding-rocket flight, are shown for the prototype EVE instruments.  相似文献
