Sediment quality, meiofaunal and nematode communities were monitored across six time points at two inside-harbour and three outside-harbour sites over a three-year period in Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, after the implementation of a sewage treatment project. Twenty-one meiofaunal groups comprising mainly free-living nematodes and harpacticoid copepods and 188 species of free-living nematodes were identified. The outside-harbour area had a more diverse and significantly different nematode community structure as compared to that in the inside-harbour area. Such spatial difference was highly correlated with the total Kjeldahl nitrogen content of the sediments. Over the study period, there was no significant improvement in sediment quality within the harbour. However, in the last sampling time, an increase in meiofaunal abundance and a closer similarity in nematode composition between one of the inside- and outside-harbour sites suggested signs of recovery of the meiofauna as a response to abatement of sewage pollution.  相似文献

The need for scientific advice to manage the aquatic environment in an ecosystem context has never been greater. Many assessments of ecosystem state and change use inadequate data on non-conspicuous, non-target organisms. These include meiofauna, a diverse group of small-sized organisms (<1 mm) that live in a range of terrestrial and aquatic environments. Meiobenthic research published between 2007 and 2011 has failed to underpin ecosystem management and conservation practices. This is partly because of the belief amongst decision-makers and the public that microscopic organisms beyond our normal range of perception are ecologically unimportant. Methodological limitations related to the taxonomic identification of small-sized organisms and the narrow scope of many contemporary meiofauna studies are also to blame. This article explores ways in which meiobenthologists can improve the impact and uptake of their research.  相似文献

The Markermeer is a large and shallow man-made freshwater lake in the Netherlands, characterized by its high turbidity. As part of a study aiming to mitigate this high turbidity, we studied the water–bed exchange processes of the lake’s muddy bed. The upper centimeter’s–decimeter’s of the lake bed sediments mainly consists of soft anoxic mud. Recent measurements have proved the existence of a thin oxic layer on top of this soft anoxic mud. This oxic layer, which is much easier to be eroded than the anoxic mud, is believed to be related with Markermeer’s high-turbidity levels. Our hypothesis is that the thin oxic layer develops from the anoxic mud, enhanced by bioturbation. Actually, we will demonstrate that it is the bioturbated state of the bed that increases its erodability, and not the oxidation state of the sediments. In particular, we will refer to bioturbation caused by meiobenthic fauna. The objective of this study is therefore to determine the influence of the development of the thin oxic layer on the water–bed exchange processes, as well as to establish the role of bioturbation on those processes. This is done by quantifying the erosion rate as a function of bed shear stresses, and at different stages of the development of the oxic layer. Our experiments show that bioturbation increases the rate at which Markermeer sediments are eroded by almost an order of magnitude. The short-term fine sediment dynamics in Markermeer are found to be driven by the complex and highly dynamic interactions between physics, chemistry, and biology. Finally, the long-term fine sediment dynamics are driven by the erosion of the historical deposits in the lake’s bed, which is only possible after bioturbation, and which leads to an increase of the stock of sediments in the lake’s muddy bed.  相似文献

Atrazine is a widely used herbicide in the US found at levels ranging from <10 ng/L to 62.5 microg/L in estuaries throughout the southeast. Effects of atrazine on estuarine meiobenthic assemblages chronically exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations are unknown. The purpose of our research was to assess effects of atrazine on meiobenthos at concentrations near the proposed USEPA SWQC (26 microg/L) using modular estuarine salt marsh mesocosms as a field surrogate. Indigenous copepod and nematode densities were assessed after 28 days of exposure in transplanted colonization chambers. Cluster analysis showed a group characterized by low copepod densities, mostly atrazine exposed chambers, and a group containing all but one control chamber. The later group included chambers with high densities of the copepods Paronychocamptus wilsoni and Enhydrosoma baruchi. Compared to controls, copepod densities was approximately 70% lower in atrazine chambers, with three of the most common copepod species (E. baruchi, Onychocamptus sp. and P. wilsoni) showing an average of 50-70% reduction in population densities (p<0.05). Although nematode density did not differ between atrazine and control chambers, the nematode-to-copepod ratio was significantly higher in atrazine (9.95+/-7.61; p=0.011) than in control chambers (0.61+/-0.35). Our findings suggest that chronic exposures over multiple generations to atrazine at concentrations near the proposed USEPA SWQC could have significant effects on the abundance and composition of estuarine meiobenthic copepod assemblages.  相似文献

Abstract

Unconfined aquifer parameters, viz. transmissivity, storage coefficient, specific yield and delay index from a pumping test are estimated using the genetic algorithm optimization (GA) technique. The parameter estimation problem is formulated as a least-squares optimization, in which the parameters are optimized by minimizing the deviations between the field-observed and the model-predicted time–drawdown data. Boulton's convolution integral for the determination of drawdown is coupled with the GA optimization technique. The bias induced by three different objective functions: (a) the sum of squares of absolute deviations between the observed and computed drawdown; (b) the sum of squares of normalized deviations with respect to the observed drawdown; and (c) the sum of squares of normalized deviations with respect to the computed drawdown, is statistically analysed. It is observed that, when the time–drawdown data contain no errors, the objective functions do not induce any bias in the parameter estimates and the true parameters are uniquely identified. However, in the presence of noise, these objective functions induce bias in the parameter estimates. For the case considered, defining the objective function as the sum of the squares of absolute deviations between the observed and simulated drawdowns resulted in the best possible estimates. A comparison of the GA technique with the curve-matching procedure and a conventional optimization technique, such as the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT), is made in estimating the aquifer parameters from a reported field pumping test in an unconfined aquifer. For the case considered, the GA technique performed better than the other two techniques in parameter estimation, with the sum-of-squares errors obtained from the GA about one fourth of those obtained by the curve matching procedure, and about half of those obtained by SUMT.

认为用坡体波动振荡效应来解释地震滑坡的形成是合理的,地震动使坡体波动振荡产生的启程剧发速度会直接影响到滑后行程速度和整个滑动土体的滑移距离。最大滑距可分为地震时坡体波动振荡产生的位移和地震波动停止后滑坡的滑移距离两部分,先采用Newmark有限滑动位移分析模型计算前者的永久地震位移,再进一步计算后者。经海原地震滑坡实例计算,文中地震滑坡滑距计算公式实用有效。  相似文献

—The objective of seismic signal deconvolution is to extract from the signal information concerning the rockmass or the signal in the source of the shock. In the case of blind deconvolution, we have to extract information regarding both quantities. Many methods of deconvolution made use of in prospective seismology were found to be of minor utility when applied to shock-induced signals recorded in the mines of the Lubin Copper District. The lack of effectiveness should be attributed to the inadequacy of the model on which the methods are based, with respect to the propagation conditions for that type of signal. Each of the blind deconvolution methods involves a number of assumptions; hence, only if these assumptions are fulfilled, we may expect reliable results.¶Consequently, we had to formulate a different model for the signals recorded in the copper mines of the Lubin District. The model is based on the following assumptions: (1) The signal emitted by the shock source is a short-term signal. (2) The signal transmitting system (rockmass) constitutes a parallel connection of elementary systems. (3) The elementary systems are of resonant type. Such a model seems to be justified by the geological structure as well as by the positions of the shock foci and seismometers. The results of time-frequency transformation also support the dominance of resonant-type propagation.¶Making use of the model, a new method for the blind deconvolution of seismic signals has been proposed. The adequacy of the new model, as well as the efficiency of the proposed method, has been confirmed by the results of blind deconvolution. The slight approximation errors obtained with a small number of approximating elements additionally corroborate the adequacy of the model.  相似文献

Summary Utilising two years data collected at two tropical coastal stations, Madras (13°04N, 80°15E) and Waltair (17°42N, 83°18E) and for one tropical continental station, Nagpur (21°09N, 79°07E), the authors have re-evaluated the constants ofBrunt's regression equation. Analyses of the observations for Waltair and Nagpur show good correlation coefficients (r) between the values of the effective emissivity of the atmosphere (the effective emissivity is the ratio of incoming long-wave sky radiation at the surfaceR s , to black body radiation T 4) and the square root values of surface vapour pressuree (mb). The value ofr for Waltair from radiometer observations is 0.98. It is also determined for Waltair and Nagpur from Ångström compensation pyrgeometer observations as 0.83 and 0.91 respectively. A low correlation co-efficient 0.56 is obtained for Madras. It might be due to higher surface vapour pressure values at Madras than at Waltair and Nagpur. The applicability of the reduced regression equations are examined for different years for the different stations. The agreement between the computed values with the new regression equations and the observed long-wave sky radiation at the surface seems to be quite good.  相似文献

—Changes of the primary strain-stress state (caused by interaction between natural conditions and mining activity) can result, under special circumstances, to the origin of seismic induced events. The question of induced seismic activity prediction was treated as a problem of time series extrapolation of maximum cumulative amplitudes and numbers of seismic events recorded per day. The treatment was carried out by means of Multilayered Perceptron Neural Networks (MLP NN). The application to mining tremor prediction has been tested and methodological conditions have been obtained. It was proved that the prediction of the number of mining tremors per day is more precise than the prediction of future energy (maximum amplitudes). Using Smoluchowski's theory of the probability after-effect it is possible to estimate the mean speed or velocity of a particulate flow by counting the number of particles present in a selected region at a sequence of equal time intervals. Apart from a knowledge of the dimensions of the region the only conditions are that the process is, in a wide sense, stationary and that the speeds of individual particles are independent. Subsequent refinements and extensions to the theory by Furth, Ruben, Rothschild and Lindley are incorporated to provide a method of velocity estimation of wide application in geomorphology. Finally, a numerical example on pedestrian speeds is assessed against an independent estimate.  相似文献

Coastal urbanization supplies surrounding estuarine environments with urban-related contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals and pesticide mixtures. In our study, adult female and male copepods (Amphiascus tenuiremis) were chronically exposed to 18 sediment samples collected from sites influenced by different land-uses. Sediment samples were collected from three major suburban areas (Hilton Head, Kiawah Island and the Okatee River watershed) and a pristine site (North Inlet) in coastal South Carolina. Three-sediment bioassays (six sites per bioassay) were conducted by culturing copepods for 14 days in quadruplicate test sediments under flow-through conditions at 20 degrees C and 12:12 LD cycles. Adult survival and copepod reproductive output were quantified. Sediment samples were also analyzed by GC-MS for low and high molecular weight PAHs. Minimal adult mortality was observed in most sediment samples. However, sediments from Hilton Head Island and the Okatee River showed significant effects on copepod reproductive output (i.e., nauplii, copepodites and clutch size). Thus, we determined that reproductive endpoints rather than adult copepod survivorship were more sensitive to effects of contaminated sediments on A. tenuiremis. Furthermore, six (33%) of the 18 sites had a >25% reduction in copepod bioassay endpoints relative to controls, suggesting a high risk to long term A. tenuiremis population maintenance.  相似文献

By modelling seismograms as “low” and “high” order autoregressive (AR) processes, the source function and the medium response function are separated from a single channel seismogram. Akaike's final prediction error is used as a statistic to select the appropriate “low” and “high” AR order of the process. Case studies of synthetic data show that the recovered source and reflectivity functions compare very well with the input functions. Using this method, arrivals of the surface reflected P phases of five explosions from the Soviet region and of two earthquakes from Kamchatka, recorded at Gauribidanur Seismic Array (GBA), India, are identified. The conditions of transformations of biogenic substances and the redistribution of their concentrations in the shelf water of Sakhalin Island are studied. Preliminary works have given the results for the water area of La Perouse Strait and Aniva Bay (the Sea of Okhotsk), while this paper gives such results for Tatar Strait (the Sea of Japan). Three electronic instruments of oceanographic studies are applied: an adapted version of Bergen Oceanic Model (for the reconstruction of the space and time distribution of seawater temperature, salinity, and density; the circulation intensity of water masses; and water exchange parameters with nearby water areas and within the strait); GIS “Sakhalin Shelf” (for the reconstruction of annual variations in thermohaline characteristics on a standard grid and horizons of oceanographic stations, and the parameters of the aquatic environment); hydroecological CNPSi-model (for studying the annual dynamics of biogenic element compounds, the biomasses, biohydrochemical activity and bioproduction of microorganisms—bacteria, phytoplankton, and zooplankton, taking part in transformation of biogenic substances and petroleum hydrocarbons, as well as the internal fluxes of biogenic substances governed by the activity of microorganisms and the external load on the marine ecosystem). The results of modeling the spatial transport of biogenic substances through the outer boundaries of Tatar Strait water area and the boundaries of the three areas identified within it are presented and discussed.  相似文献
