The source of metasomatic fluids in iron-oxide–copper–gold districts is contentious with models for magmatic and other fluid sources having been proposed. For this study, δ 18O and δ 13C ratios were measured from carbonate mineral separates in the Proterozoic eastern Mt Isa Block of Northwest Queensland, Australia. Isotopic analyses are supported by petrography, mineral chemistry and cathodoluminescence imagery. Marine meta-carbonate rocks (ca. 20.5‰ δ 18O and 0.5‰ δ 13C calcite) and graphitic meta-sedimentary rocks (ca. 14‰ δ 18O and −18‰ δ 13C calcite) are the main supracrustal reservoirs of carbon and oxygen in the district. The isotopic ratios for calcite from the cores of Na–(Ca) alteration systems strongly cluster around 11‰ δ 18O and −7‰ δ 13C, with shifts towards higher δ 18O values and higher and lower δ 13C values, reflecting interaction with different hostrocks. Na–(Ca)-rich assemblages are out of isotopic equilibrium with their metamorphic hostrocks, and isotopic values are consistent with fluids derived from or equilibrated with igneous rocks. However, igneous rocks in the eastern Mt Isa Block contain negligible carbon and are incapable of buffering the δ 13C signatures of CO2-rich metasomatic fluids associated with Na–(Ca) alteration. In contrast, plutons in the eastern Mt Isa Block have been documented as having exsolved saline CO2-rich fluids and represent the most probable fluid source for Na–(Ca) alteration. Intrusion-proximal, skarn-like Cu–Au orebodies that lack significant K and Fe enrichment (e.g. Mt Elliott) display isotopic ratios that cluster around values of 11‰ δ 18O and −7‰ δ 13C (calcite), indicating an isotopically similar fluid source as for Na–(Ca) alteration and that significant fluid–wallrock interaction was not required in the genesis of these deposits. In contrast, K- and Fe-rich, intrusion-distal deposits (e.g. Ernest Henry) record significant shifts in δ 18O and δ 13C towards values characteristic of the broader hostrocks to the deposits, reflecting fluid–wallrock equilibration before mineralisation. Low temperature, low salinity, low δ 18O (<10‰ calcite) and CO2-poor fluids are documented in retrograde metasomatic assemblages, but these fluids are paragenetically late and have not contributed significantly to the mass budgets of Cu–Au mineralisation.  相似文献

Natural gases of shallow reservoirs with the carbon isotopic compositions of methane ranging from -50‰ to -60‰ (PDB) were considered as mixed gases of biogenic and thermogenic origins previously and some of them were considered as low-mature (or low temperature thermogenic) gases lately. In this paper natural gases with the carbon isotopic compositions of methane in the above range were identified using the molecular and stable carbon isotopic compositions of methane, ethane and propane. The mixed gases of biogenic and mature thermogenic origins display the characteristics of δ 13 C1 ranging from -50‰to -60‰,δ13C2 > -35‰,Δvalues (δ13C3 -δ13C2) < 5‰ and C1/∑C2 ratios < 40. Immature to low-mature gases display the characteristics of δ 13 C1 ranging from - 50‰ to - 60‰, δ13 C2 <- 40‰,Δ values (δ13C3 -δ13C2) >7‰, and C1/∑C 2 ratios >60.  相似文献

Taking limestone soil and yellow soil, the two major soil types in karst areas as examples, analyzing stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C value) of soil organic matter (SOM) in bulk soils and particle-size fractions of four soil profiles under three vegetable forms, the following results are reached: in the limestone soil profile, soil organic carbon contents are all above 1.0%, the highest value is 7.1% in the surface soil; however, they are between 0.3% and 4.6% in the three yellow soil profiles. From the surface to the bottom of the soil profiles, the variation of δ13C value of soil organic carbon for limestone soil profile is only between −24.1‰ and −23.0‰, however, it’s between −24.8‰ and −21.1‰ for yellow soil profiles. The variation range of δ13C value of soil organic carbon associated with particle-size separates is slight for limestone soil but is considerable for yellow soil. The contrast research indicates that the changes between the contents and the δ13C value of soil organic carbon with depth are complex. The vertical patterns of stable carbon isotope in soil organic matter have a distinct regional characteristic in karst areas.  相似文献

To characterize the isotopic composition of organisms at the base of the food web and the controls on their variability, the concentration and δ13C isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and plankton δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S were measured. The measurements were made during periods of high and low river flow in Apalachicola Bay, Florida, United States, over 3 yr. DIC concentration and δ13C values were related to salinity, indicating that conservative mixing of riverine and marine waters was responsible for the overall distributions. The usefulness of DIC δ13C data for characterizing the trophic processes within the estuary was dependent upon the residence time of water within the season. Plankton δ13C values varied from −22‰ to −30‰ and were directly related to estuarine DIC δ13C, offset by a factor of roughly −20‰. This offset factor varied with salinity. Values of δ34S in estuarine plankton (station means ranged from 11.4‰ to 13.1‰) were depleted relative to marine plankton (17.7±0.4‰) possibly due to the admixture of34S-depleted sedimentary sulfide with estuarine samples. Values of δ34S in plankton were not related to δ13C values of plankton and were only weakly correlated to the salinity of the water from which the plankton were collected, indicating that marine sulfate was the primary source of planktonic sulfur. Values of δ15N in plankton varied from 5.5‰ to 10.7‰ and appeared related to dominance of the sample by phytoplankton or zooplankton. Estuarine plankton was15N enriched relative to offshore plankton and estuarine sediment.  相似文献

Petrography and stable isotopes (carbon and oxygen) geochemistry of limestones from the El Abra Formation, Actopan, were studied to identify their digenetic environments. The major petrographic types identified are mudstone, wackestone, grainstone, and boundstone. Most of the studied samples show positive δ13C values, except two samples (2 and 28), which are slightly negative values (−0.27‰ and −0.02‰). The organic remains identified in foraminiferal wackestone type can be responsible for the negative δ13C values. The δ18O values range from −12.41‰ to −4.02‰ and indicate meteoric diagenesis.  相似文献

Early carbonate cements in the Yanchang Formation sandstones are composed mainly of calcite with relatively heavier carbon isotope (their δ^18O values range from -0.3‰- -0.1‰) and lighter oxygen isotope (their δ^18O values range from -22.1‰- -19.5‰). Generally, they are closely related to the direct precipitation of oversaturated calcium carbonate from alkaline lake water. This kind of cementation plays an important role in enhancing the anti-compaction ability of sandstones, preserving intragranular volume and providing the mass basis for later disso- lution caused by acidic fluid flow to produce secondary porosity. Ferriferous calcites are characterized by relatively light carbon isotope with δ^13C values ranging from -8.02‰ to -3.23‰, and lighter oxygen isotope with δ^18O values ranging from -22.9‰ to -19.7‰, which is obviously related to the decarboxylation of organic matter during the late period of early diagenesis to the early period of late diagenesis. As the mid-late diagenetic products, ferriferous cal- cites in the study area are considered as the characteristic authigenic minerals for indicating large-scaled hydrocarbon influx and migration within the clastic reservoir. The late ankerite is relatively heavy in carbon isotope with δ^13C values ranging from -1.92‰ to -0.84‰, and shows a wide range of variations in oxygen isotopic composition, with δ^18O values ranging from -20.5‰ to -12.6‰. They are believed to have nothing to do with decarboxylation, but the previously formed marine carbonate rock fragments may serve as the chief carbon source for their precipitation, and the alkaline diagenetic environment at the mid-late stage would promote this process.  相似文献

The Janggun iron deposits, Republic of␣Korea, occur as lens-shaped magnesian skarn, magnetite and base-metal sulfide orebodies developed in the Cambrian Janggun Limestone Formation. Mineralization stage of the deposits can be divided into two separate events. The skarn stage (107 Ma) consists of magnetite, pyrrhotite, base-metal sulfides, carbonates and magnesian skarn minerals. The hydrothermal stage (70 Ma) consists of base-metal sulfides, native bismuth, bismuthinite, tetrahedrite, boulangerite, bournonite and stannite. Mineral assemblages, chemical compositions and thermodynamic considerations indicate that formation temperatures, −log fs2 and −log fo2 values of ore fluids from the skarn stage were 433 to 345 °C, 8.1 to 9.7 bar and 29.4 to 31.6 bar, and the hydrothermal stage was 245 to 315 °C, 10.4 to 13.2 bar and 33.6 to 35.4 bar, respectively. Thermochemical considerations indicate that the XCO2 during magnesian skarnization ranged from 0.06 to 0.09, and the activity of H+ presumably decreased when the fluids equilibrated with host dolomitic limestone which resulted in a pH change from about 6.1 to 7.8, and decreases in fo2 and fs2. The δ34S values of ore sulfides have a wide range from 3.2 to 11.6 ‰ (CDT). Calculated 34SH2 S values of ore fluids are 2.9 to 5.4 ‰ (skarn stage) and 8.7 to 13.5 ‰ (hydrothermal stage). These are interpreted to represent an initial deep-seated, igneous source of sulfur which gave way to influence of oxidized sedimentary sulfur to hydrothermal stage. The δ13C values of carbonates in ores range from −4.6 to −2.5 ‰ (PDB). It is likely that carbon in the ore fluids was a mixture of deep-seated magmatic carbon and dissolved carbon of dolomitic limestone. The δ18OH2 O and δD values (SMOW) of water in the ore fluids were 14.7 to 1.8 and −85 to −73 ‰ during the skarn stage and 11.1 to −0.2 and −87 to −80 ‰ in the hydrothermal stage. The sediment-hosted stratiform Cu–Co mineralization of the Luiswishi and Kamoto deposits in the Katangan Copperbelt is hosted by the Neoproterozoic Mines Subgroup. Two main hypogene Cu–Co sulfide mineralization stages and associated gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) are distinguished. The first is an early diagenetic, typical stratiform mineralization with fine-grained minerals, whereas the second is a multistage syn-orogenic stratiform to stratabound mineralization with coarse-grained minerals. For both stages, the main hypogene Cu–Co sulfide minerals are chalcopyrite, bornite, carrollite, and chalcocite. These minerals are in many places replaced by supergene sulfides (e.g., digenite and covellite), especially near the surface, and are completely oxidized in the weathered superficial zone and in surface outcrops, with malachite, heterogenite, chrysocolla, and azurite as the main oxidation products. The hypogene sulfides of the first Cu–Co stage display δ34S values (−10.3‰ to +3.1‰ Vienna Canyon Diablo Troilite (V-CDT)), which partly overlap with the δ34S signature of framboidal pyrites (−28.7‰ to 4.2‰ V-CDT) and have ∆34SSO4-Sulfides in the range of 14.4‰ to 27.8‰. This fractionation is consistent with bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR). The hypogene sulfides of the second Cu–Co stage display δ34S signatures that are either similar (−13.1‰ to +5.2‰ V-CDT) to the δ34S values of the sulfides of the first Cu–Co stage or comparable (+18.6‰ to +21.0‰ V-CDT) to the δ34S of Neoproterozoic seawater. This indicates that the sulfides of the second stage obtained their sulfur by both remobilization from early diagenetic sulfides and from thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). The carbon (−9.9‰ to −1.4‰ Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (V-PDB)) and oxygen (−14.3‰ to −7.7‰ V-PDB) isotope signatures of dolomites associated with the first Cu–Co stage are in agreement with the interpretation that these dolomites are by-products of BSR. The carbon (−8.6‰ to +0.3‰ V-PDB) and oxygen (−24.0‰ to −10.3‰ V-PDB) isotope signatures of dolomites associated with the second Cu–Co stage are mostly similar to the δ13C (−7.1‰ to +1.3‰ V-PDB) and δ18O (−14.5‰ to −7.2‰ V-PDB) of the host rock and of the dolomites of the first Cu–Co stage. This indicates that the dolomites of the second Cu–Co stage precipitated from a high-temperature, host rock-buffered fluid, possibly under the influence of TSR. The dolomites associated with the first Cu–Co stage are characterized by significantly radiogenic Sr isotope signatures (0.70987 to 0.73576) that show a good correspondence with the Sr isotope signatures of the granitic basement rocks at an age of ca. 816 Ma. This indicates that the mineralizing fluid of the first Cu–Co stage has most likely leached radiogenic Sr and Cu–Co metals by interaction with the underlying basement rocks and/or with arenitic sedimentary rocks derived from such a basement. In contrast, the Sr isotope signatures (0.70883 to 0.71215) of the dolomites associated with the second stage show a good correspondence with the 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.70723 to 0.70927) of poorly mineralized/barren host rocks at ca. 590 Ma. This indicates that the fluid of the second Cu–Co stage was likely a remobilizing fluid that significantly interacted with the country rocks and possibly did not mobilize additional metals from the basement rocks.  相似文献

More than 140 middle-small sized deposits or minerals are present in the Weishan-Yongping ore concentration area which is located in the southern part of a typical Lanping strike-slip and pull-apart basin. It has plenty of mineral resources derived from the collision between the Indian and Asian plates. The ore-forming fluid system in the Weishan-Yongping ore concentration area can be divided into two subsystems, namely, the Zijinshan subsystem and Gonglang arc subsystem. The ore-forming fluids of Cu, Co deposits in the Gonglang arc fluid subsystem have δD values between −83.8‰ and −69‰, δ18O values between 4.17‰ and 10.45‰, and δ13C values between −13.6‰ and 3.7‰, suggesting that the ore-forming fluids of Cu, Co deposits were derived mainly from magmatic water and partly from formation water. The ore-forming fluids of Au, Pb, Zn, Fe deposits in the Zijinshan subsystem have δD values between −117.4‰ and −76‰, δ18O values between 5.32‰ and 9.56‰, and Δ13C values between −10.07‰ and −1.5‰. The ore-forming fluids of Sb deposits have δD values between −95‰ and −78‰, δ18O values between 4.5‰ and 32.3‰, and Δ13C values between −26.4‰ and −1.9‰. Hence, the ore-forming fluids of the Zijinshan subsystem must have been derived mainly from formation water and partly from magmatic water. Affected by the collision between the Indian and Asian plates, ore-forming fluids in Weishan-Yongping basin migrated considerably from southwest to northeast. At first, the Gonglang arc subsystem with high temperature and high salinity was formed. With the development of the ore-forming fluids, the Zijinshan subsystem with lower temperature and lower salinity was subsequently formed. The Neoproterozoic Era includes some of the most largest ice ages in the geological history. The exact number of glaciations is unknown, though there were at least two events of global glaciation. Neoproterozoic glacial deposits in the Kuruktag Mountain, Xinjiang, western China have proven that there had occurred three discrete Neoproterozoic glaciations. Diamictite units occurred in the Bayisi, Tereeken, and Hankalchough formations, carbonate units were recognized among the diamictites and immediately overlied the Bayisi, Tereeken and Hankalchough diamictites. Carbonates at the top of the Bayisi Formation are characterized by the dolo-sility stones with negative δ13C values ranging from -4.10‰ to -8.17‰ (PDB), comparable to the Sturtian cap carbonates that overlie the Sturtian glacial deposits from other Neoproterozoic sequences. Carbonates overlying the Tereeken Formation are characterized by the pinkish cap dolostones (ca. 10 m thick) with negative δ13C values ranging from -2.58‰ to -4.77‰ (PDB), comparable to the Marinoan cap carbonates. The cap is also characterized by tepee-like structures, barite precipitates and pseudomorphous aragonite crystal fan limestones. Carbonates at the top of the Hankalchough Formation are characterized by subaerial exposure crust (vadose pisolite structure, calcareous crust structure) dolostones with negative δ13C values ranging from -4.56‰ to -11.45‰ (PDB) and the calcareous crust dolostones, implying that the Hankalchough cap carbonates differ from either the Sturtian or Marinoan cap carbonates in sedimentary environment and carbon isotopic composition. In addition, it is suggested the Hankalchough glaciation belongs to a terrestrial glaciation and it is the third largest glaciation during the Neoproterozoic period on the Tarim platform.  相似文献

The eastern Alaska Beaufort Sea coast is characterized by numerous shallow (2–5 m) estuarine lagoons, fed by streams and small rivers that drain northward from the Brooks Range through the arctic coastal plain, and bounded seaward by barrier islands and shoals. Millions of birds from six continents nest and forage during the summer period in this region using the river deltas, lagoons, and shoreline along with several species of anadromous and marine fish. We examined biogeochemical processes linking the benthic community to the overall food web structure of these poorly studied but pristine estuaries, which are largely covered by 1.8 m of ice for 10 months annually. In summer, these lagoons are relatively warm with brackish salinities (5–10°C, S = 10–25) compared to more open coastal waters (0–5°C, S > 27). The stable isotopic composition of organic materials in sediments (i.e., benthic particulate organic matter) and water column suspended particulate organic matter from both streams and lagoons are largely indistinguishable and reflect strong terrestrial contributions, based upon δ13C and δ15N values (−25.6‰ to −27.4‰ and 1.4‰ to 3.3‰, respectively). By comparison, shifts toward more heavy isotope-enriched organic materials reflecting marine influence are observed on the adjacent coastal shelf (−24.8‰ to −25.4‰ and 3.4‰ to 5.3‰, respectively). The isotopic composition of lagoon fauna is consistent with a food web dominated by omnivorous detritovores strongly dependent on microbial processing of terrestrial sources of carbon. Biomagnification of 15N in benthic organisms indicate that the benthic food web in lagoons support up to four trophic levels, with carnivorous gastropod predators and benthic fishes (δ15N values up to 14.4‰) at the apex.  相似文献

The nitrogen and carbon stable isotope ratios (δ15N and δ13C) of the pygmy mussel,Xenostrobus securis, were determined for three estuaries with varying levels of catchment disturbance in northern New South Wales, Australia. The lower Manning River catchment supported the highest human population densities with 3% residential development and some livestock agriculture (41%); the Wallamba River catchment was mostly livestock agriculture (56%) while the Wallingat River catchment was mostly vegetated (79%). Mussels, estuarine particulate organic matter (POM), and livestock and human-derived waste were collected in two stages during the austral summers of 2001–2002 and 2002–2003 for dual carbon-nitrogen stable isotope analysis. The disturbed Manning and Wallamba River catchment mussels were enriched in15N by an average of 3.2‰ and 1.5‰, respectively, compared to the vegetated Wallingat River mussels. Mussel δ13C values ranged from −24.8‰ to −30.3‰ and showed an estuarine gradient becoming enriched with distance downstream within estuaries, but were unable to distinguish patterns in catchment disturbance between estuaries. The δ15N and δ13C values of POM showed a similar pattern to mussels, indicating a direct link between them within each estuary. A multiple regression model of mussel δ15N using the fractions of land used for livestock agriculture and residential development within 5 km zones from river networks to a distance equivalent to a tidal ellipse from sites explained 67% of the variation in mussel δ15N with 95% of the differences lying within 1.6‰ of observed values. Increasing fractions of land used for livestock agriculture depleted mussel δ15N values estimated by the regression equation, indicating the use of cow manure as a nutrient source with a value of 2.0‰. Increasing fractions of land used for residential development enriched estimated mussel δ15N, indicating the use of human-derived waste with a value of 20.8‰. Pygmy mussels are a useful long-term bio-indicator for the effects of anthropogenic catchment disturbance and nutrient enrichment in estuaries.  相似文献

Isotopic compositions of C, O, and Sr in carbonates, as well as Rb-Sr systems in the silicate material from Upper Precambrian and Lower Cambrian rocks exposed by the Chapa River in the northern Yenisei Ridge, are studied. The Late Precambrian part of the section includes the following formations (from the bottom to top): Lopatinskaya (hereafter, Lopatino), Vandadykskaya (hereafter, Vandadyk) or Kar’ernaya, Chivida, Suvorovskaya (hereafter, Suvorovo), Pod”emskaya (hereafter, Podyom), and Nemchanka. They are characterized by alternation of horizons with anomalously high and low δ13C values (such alternation is typical of the ∼700–550 Ma interval). The lower, relatively thin (20 m), positive excursion (δ13C up to 4.3‰) was established in dolomites from the lower subformation of the Vandadyk (Kar’ernaya) Formation (hereafter, lower Vandadyk subformation). The upper positive excursion (δ13C = 2.2 ± 0.6‰) was recorded in the 3-km-thick Nemchanka Formation enriched in terrigenous rocks. The lower negative excursion stands out as uniform, moderately low δ13C values (−2 ± 1‰) and significant thickness. It comprises the upper part of the Vandadyk Formation, as well as Chivida and Podyom formations. The upper negative excursion is related to a thin (∼20 m) marker carbonate horizon of the upper Nemchanka subformation, in which δ13C values fall down to −8.3‰. The lower part of the Lebyazhinskaya (hereafter, Lebyazhino) Formation, which overlies the Nemchanka Formation, shows a step-by-step increase in δ13C from −2.2 to 2.5‰ typical of the Vendianto-Cambrian (Nemakit-Daldyn Horizon/Stage) transitional sequences. The absence of relationships between the carbon and oxygen isotope compositions and other parameters of postsedimentary alterations suggests that the excursions characterized above could form at the sedimentation stage and coincide in general with δ13C fluctuations in seawater. The value of 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7076−0.7078 in limestones of the Podyom Formation points to their early Ediacaran age. Values of 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70841 and 0.70845 in dolomites of the lower Lebyazhino subformation correspond to the Early Cambrian. The Rb-Sr systems of the clay material from the Vandadyk and Chivida formations are approximated by a straight line, parameters of which correspond to the age of 695 ± 20 Ma (87Sr/86Sr0 = 0.7200 ± 0.0013) and probably characterize the epigenetic stage of older sedimentary rocks, which were subjected to very rapid exhumation and “polar” sulfuric acid weathering in the course of glacioeustatic regression.  相似文献

We report on a suite of diamonds from the Cretaceous Collier 4 kimberlite pipe, Juina, Brazil, that are predominantly nitrogen-free type II crystals showing complex internal growth structures. Syngenetic mineral inclusions comprise calcium- and titanium-rich phases with perovskite stoichiometry, Ca-rich majoritic-garnet, clinopyroxene, olivine, TAPP phase, minerals with stoichiometries of CAS and K-hollandite phases, SiO2, FeO, native iron, low-Ni sulfides, and Ca–Mg-carbonate. We divide the diamonds into three groups on the basis of the carbon isotope compositions (δ13C) of diamond core zones. Group 1 diamonds have heavy, mantle-like δ13C (−5 to −10‰) with mineral inclusions indicating a transition zone origin from mafic protoliths. Group 2 diamonds have intermediate δ13C (−12 to −15‰), with inclusion compositions indicating crystallization from near-primary and differentiated carbonated melts derived from oceanic crust in the deep upper mantle or transition zone. A 206Pb/238U age of 101 ± 7 Ma on a CaTiSi-perovskite inclusion (Group 2) is close to the kimberlite emplacement time (93.1 ± 1.5 Ma). Group 3 diamonds have extremely light δ13C (−25‰), and host inclusions have compositions akin to high-pressure–temperature phases expected to be stable in pelagic sediments subducted to transition zone depths. Collectively, the Collier 4 diamonds and their inclusions indicate multi-stage, polybaric growth histories in dynamically changing chemical environments. The young inclusion age, the ubiquitous chemical and isotopic characteristics indicative of subducted materials, and the regional tectonic history, suggest a model in which generation of sublithospheric diamonds and their inclusions, and the proto-kimberlite magmas, are related genetically, temporally and geographically to the interaction of subducted lithosphere and a Cretaceous plume.  相似文献

A progression from cuboid to octahedral growth has been observed in 16 natural diamonds from Yakutian kimberlites. X-ray and cathodoluminescence topography have revealed that the change in morphology of diamonds with cloudy cuboid cores may occur without mixed-habit growth but via generation of numerous octahedral apices on cuboid surfaces and subsequent gradual transformation into regular octahedral morphology. Nitrogen aggregation in both cuboid and octahedral domains of such diamonds suggests that they have had a long residence time under mantle conditions. Micro-inclusions in the cuboid domains of the diamonds testify to the nucleation and growth of cuboid cores from a hydrous-carbonatitic (oxidized) fluid. The transition from cuboid hummocky growth rich in inclusions to octahedral growth without inclusions may be linked to decreasing supersaturation in the parent fluid. Measurements of δ13C and Nppm by ion microprobe show that the chemical variations observed between inner cuboid domains and outer octahedral zones commonly have a systematic character and as such they are probably not due to purely kinetic effects. The peripheral octahedral zones are always enriched in 13C in comparison with inner cuboid ones, and the total nitrogen content decreases with the change from cuboid to octahedral growth. The octahedral outer zones show a gradual progressive increase in δ13C, with an overall change of up to 5‰ from the cuboid core (δ13C usually between −8 and −6‰) to the diamond margin (δ13C usually between −4 and −2‰). Decreases in δ13C of this magnitude with a gradual increase in 13C may be attributed to the Rayleigh fractionation operating on a single parent fluid of close to normal mantle δ13C composition with diamond precipitating by the reduction of carbonatitic fluid in a closed system. However, one sample shows a variation of δ13C of approximately −17 to −6‰ and therefore suggests a possible change of fluid source composition from one containing subducted crustal organic carbon to one with common mantle carbon. The Kara Sea is an area uniquely suitable for studying processes in the river-sea system. This is a shallow sea into which two great Siberian rivers, Yenisei and Ob, flow. From 1995 to 2003, the sea was studied by six international expeditions aboard the R/V Akademik Boris Petrov. This publication summarizes the results obtained, within the framework of this project, at the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences. Various hydrogeochemical parameters, concentrations and isotopic composition of organic and carbonate carbon of the sediments, plankton, particulate organic matter, hydrocarbons, and dissolved CO2 were examined throughout the whole sea area at more than 200 sites. The δ13C varies from −22 and −24‰ where Atlantic waters enter the Kara Sea and in the North-eastern part of the water area to −27‰ in the Yenisei and Ob estuaries. The value of δ13C of the plankton is only weakly correlated with the δ13C of the organic matter from the sediments and is lower by as much as 3–4‰. The paper presents the results obtained from a number of meridional river-sea profiles. It was determined from the relations between the isotopic compositions of plankton and particulate matter that the riverwaters carry material consisting of 70% detrital-humus matter and 30% planktonogenic material in the river part, and the material contained in the off-shore waters consists of 30% terrigenous components, with the contribution of bioproducers amounting to 70%. The carbon isotopic composition of the plankton ranges from −29 to −35‰ in the riverine part, from −28 to −27‰ in the estuaries, and from −27.0 to −25% in the marine part. The relative lightness of the carbon isotopic composition of plankton in Arctic waters is explained by the temperature effect, elevated CO2 concentrations, and long-distance CO2 supply to the sea with riverwaters. The data obtained on the isotopic composition of CO2 in the surface waters of the Kara Sea were used to map the distribution of δ13CCO 2. The complex of hydrocarbon gases extracted from the waters included methane, C2–C5, and unsaturated C2=–C4= hydrocarbons, for which variations in the concentrations in the waters were studied along river-estuary-sea profiles. The geochemistry of hydrocarbon gases in surface fresh waters is characterized by comparable concentrations of methane (0.3–5 μl/l) and heavier hydrocarbons, including unsaturated ones. Microbiological methane with δ13C from −105 to −90‰ first occurs in the sediments at depths of 40–200 cm. The sediments practically everywhere display traces of methane oxidation in the form of a shift of the δ13C of methane toward higher values and the occurrence of autogenic carbonate material, including ikaite, enriched in the light isotope. Ikaite (δ13C from −25 to −60‰) was found and examined in several profiles. The redox conditions in the sediments varied from normal in the southern part of the sea to highly oxidized along the Novaya Zemlya Trough. Vertical sections through the sediments of the latter exemplify the complete suppression of the biochemical activity of microorganisms. Our data provide insight into the biogeochemistry of the Kara Sea and make it possible to specify the background values needed for ecological control during the future exploration operations and extraction of hydrocarbons in the Kara Sea. The strata-bound Cu−Pb−Zn polymetallic sulfide deposits occur in metamorphic rocks of greenschist phase of the middle-upper Proterozoic Langshan Group in central Inner Mongolia. δ34S values for sulfides range from −3.1‰ to +37.3‰, and an apparent difference is noticed between vein sulfides and those in bedded rocks. For example, δ34S values for bedded pyrite range from +10.6‰ to +20.0‰, while those for vein pyrite vary from −3.1‰ to +14.1‰. δ34S of bedded pyrrhotite is in the range +7.9‰–+23.5‰ in comparison with +6.5‰–+17.1‰ for vein pyrrhotite. The wide scatter of δ34S and the enrichment of heavier sulfur indicate that sulfur may have been derived from H2S as a result of bacterial reduction of sulfates in the sea water. Sulfur isotopic composition also differs from deposit to deposit in this area because of the difference in environment in which they were formed. The mobilization of bedded sulfides in response to regional metamorphism and magmatic intrusion led to the formation of vein sulfides. δ18O and δ13C of ore-bearing rocks and wall rocks are within the range typical of ordinary marine facies, with the exception of lower values for ore-bearing marble at Huogeqi probably due to diopsidization and tremalitization of carbonate rocks. Pb isotopic composition is relatively stable and characterized by lower radio-genetic lead. The age of basement rocks was calculated to be about 23.9 Ma and ore-forming age 7.8 Ma.207Pb/204Pb−206Pb/204Pb and208Pb/204Pb−206Pb/204Pb plots indicate that Pb may probably be derived from the lower crust or upper mantle. It is believed that the deposits in this region are related to submarine volcanic exhalation superimposed by later regional metamorphism and magmatic intrusion.  相似文献

Stable and radiogenic isotope composition of stratiform Cu–Co–Zn mineralization and associated sedimentary rocks within the Boléo district of the Miocene Santa Rosalía basin, Baja California Sur, constrains the evolution of seawater and hydrothermal fluids and the mechanisms responsible for sulfide and oxide deposition. Stable isotope geochemistry of limestone and evaporite units indicates a strong paleogeographic influence on the chemistry of the water column. Near-shore limestone at the base of the Boléo Formation is characterized by modified marine carbon (δ 13CPDB=−6.0 to +4.4‰) and oxygen (δ 18OSMOW=+19.5 to +26.2‰) isotope composition due to the influx of 13C- and 18O-depleted fluvial water. Sulfate sulfur isotope composition (δ 34SCDT=+17.21 to +22.3‰ and δ 18OSMOW=+10.7 to +13.1‰) for basal evaporite and claystone facies are similar to Miocene seawater. Strontium isotopes are less radiogenic than expected for Miocene seawater due to interaction with volcanic rocks. Low S/C ratios, high Mn contents and sedimentological evidence indicate the basin water column was oxidizing. The oxygenated basin restricted sulfide precipitation to within the sedimentary pile by replacement of early diagenetic framboidal pyrite and pore-space filling by Cu–Co–Zn sulfides to produce disseminated sulfides. Quartz–Mn oxide oxygen isotope geothermometry constrains mineralization temperature between 18 and 118°C. Sulfur isotopes indicate the following sources of sulfide: (1) bacterial sulfate reduction within the sedimentary pile produced negative δ 34S values (<−20‰) in framboidal pyrite; and (2) bacterial sulfate reduction at high temperature (80–118°C) within the sedimentary pile during the infiltration of the metal-bearing brines produced Cu–Co–Zn sulfides with negative, but close to 0‰, δ 34S values. Isotope modeling of fluid-rock reaction and fluid mixing indicates: (1) sedimentary and marine carbonates (δ 13C=−11.6 to −3.2‰ and δ 18O=+19.0 to +21.8‰) precipitated from basin seawater/pore water that variably mixed with isotopically depleted meteoric waters; and (2) hydrothermal calcite (δ 13C=−7.9 to +4.3‰ and δ 18O=+22.1 to +25.8‰) formed by dissolution and replacement of authigenic marine calcite by downward-infiltrating metalliferous brine and brine-sediment exchange, that prior to reaction with calcite, had mixed with isotopically depleted pore water. The downward infiltration of metalliferous brine is inferred from lateral and stratigraphic metal distributions and from the concentration of Cu sulfides along the upper contact of pyrite-bearing laminae. The co-existence and textural relationships among framboidal pyrite, base metal sulfides, carbonate and Mn–Fe oxides (including magnetite) within mineralized units are consistent with carbonate replacement and high-temperature bacterial reduction within the sedimentary pile occurring simultaneously below a seawater column under predominantly oxygenated conditions.  相似文献

In this study, two sediment cores (~70 cm) were collected from separate mangrove forests straddling the Ba Lat Estuary, Red River of northern Vietnam, to examine the origins of sedimentary organic carbon (SOC) and reconstruct the paleoenvironment. In addition, mangrove leaves and particulate organic matter were collected and measured for δ13C to trace the origins of SOC. The cores were analyzed by high-resolution sections for δ13C, TOC, C/N ratios, sediment grain size, water content, and porosity, with values of δ13C, TOC, and C/N ratios ranging from −28.19 to −22.5‰, 2.14–30.94 mg/g, and 10.29–18.32, respectively. The δ13C and TOC relationship indicated that there were some small residual effects of diagenetic processes on TOC and δ13C values in mangrove sediments. However, the shifts of δ13C and C/N ratios from the bottom to the surface sediment of the cores explained the change in organic matter sources, with values of C/N > 12 and δ13C < −25‰, and C/N < 12 and δ13C > −25‰ indicated terrestrial (e.g., mangrove litter) and marine phytoplankton sources, respectively. The covarying δ13C, C/N ratios, and sediment grain sizes during the past 100 years in sediment cores showed that the paleoenvironment may be reconstructed into three environments (subtidal, tidal flat, and intertidal mangrove). General trends in δ13C and C/N followed a gradual increase in the C/N ratio and a concomitant decrease in δ13C from the subtidal, through to tidal flat, and to the intertidal mangrove. δ13C and C/N ratios are therefore effective in measuring the continuum of environmental change in mangrove ecosystem.  相似文献

Syngnathus abaster andSyngnathus typhle (Pisces: Syngnathidae) from a dense Cymodocea nodesa meadow in the western Mediterranean Stagnone di Marsala (Italy) were studied using δ13N and δ15N analysis. Because of the presence of these two species in the same habitat and the specialized parental care by the male, the effect of species and sex on the isotopic composition was also studied to investigate the different feeding strategies between and within species.S. abaster andS. typhle exhibited enriched13C and15N values throughout the sampling period (mean ±SE, δ13C =−10.5±1.8‰ and−10.8±2.0‰, δ15N=11.9±0.7‰ and 10.6±1.0%., respectively), suggesting that these species receive their energy mainly from mixed sources, particularly from sedimentary and particulate organic matter and the seagrassC. nodosa as ultimate organic matter sources. ANOVA results demonstrated that the interaction between season, species, and sex significantly affected the isotopic composition of the pipefish (p<0.001 for both δ13C and δ15N). Differences between species and sex, although significant, were smaller than the values generally reported for trophic level differences (≈1‰ and ≈3.5‰ for δ15N, respectively) and change in foraging habitat, Slight isotopic differences may mirror small differences in resource exploitation and resource partitioning. Evidence from stomach content analysis from the literature coupled with stable isotope measurements, while disagreeing somewhat, provide additional knowledge of pipefish feeding strategies.  相似文献
