Summary. The spatial anisotropy of P -wave velocities was investigated in spherical samples of granodiorite and quartzite and correlated with the orientation of microcracks and grain boundaries, determined optically by universal stage techniques. The preferred orientation of normals to cleavage cracks of biotite and amphibole in granodiorite correlates well with the direction of maximum velocity increase under hydrostatic pressure, although the minerals form only nine per cent of the volume. Irregular microcracks in an almost monomineral quartzite have only a very small effect on the velocity anisotropy, although they are also preferentially oriented. The nature of the microdiscontinuities is of primary importance for the velocity anisotropy observed at atmospheric and low hydrostatic pressures.  相似文献

To quantify the seismic properties of lower crustal rocks and to better constrain the origin of the lower crustal seismic reflectivity, we determined the complete 3-D seismic properties of a lower crustal section. Eight representative samples of the main lithologic and structural units outcropping in the Val Sesia (Ivrea zone) were studied in detail. The seismic velocities were calculated using the single crystal stiffness coefficients and the lattice preferred orientation (LPO) of each mineral in all samples. The 21 stiffness coefficients characterizing the elastic behaviour of each rock are determined. Mafic and ultramafic rocks such as pyroxenite and pyroxene-bearing gabbros display complex shear wave properties. These rocks are weakly birefringent (maximum 0.1 kms−1) and it is difficult to find consistent relationships between the seismic properties and the rock structure. On the other hand, seismic properties of deformed felsic rocks are essentially controlled by mica. They display strong S -wave birefringence (0.3 km s−1) and relatively high V p anisotropy (7.6 per cent). Amphibole also strongly influences the rock birefringence patterns. For both kind of rocks, the foliation is highly birefringent and the fast polarized shear wave is systematically oriented parallel to the foliation. We show that the number of mineral phases in the rock strongly controls the anisotropy. The seismic anisotropy has a complex role in the P -wave reflectivity. Compared to the isotropic case, anisotropy enhances the reflection coefficient for about 60 per cent of the possible lithological interfaces. For 40 per cent of the interfaces, the reflection coefficient is much lower when one considers the medium as anisotropic.  相似文献

Summary. Two localized regions of velocity heterogeneity in the lower mantle with scale lengths of 1000–2000 km and 2 per cent velocity contrasts are detected and isolated through comparison of S, ScS, P and PcP travel times and amplitudes from deep earthquakes in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and the Sea of Okhotsk. Comparison of the relative patterns of ScS-S differential travel times and S travel-time residuals across North American WWSSN and CSN stations for the different source regions provides baselines for interpreting which phases have anomalous times. A region of low S and P velocities is located beneath Northern Brazil and Venezuela at depths of 1700–2700 km. This region produces S -wave delays of up to 4 s for signals from deep Argentine events recorded at eastern North American stations. The localized nature of the anomaly is indicated by the narrow bounds in azimuth (15°) and take-off angle (13°) of the arrivals affected by it. The long period S -waves encountering this anomaly generally show 30–100 per cent amplitude enhancement, while the short-period amplitudes show no obvious effect. The second anomaly is a high-velocity region beneath the Caribbean originally detected by Jordan and Lynn, who used travel times from deep Peruvian events. The data from Argentine and Bolivian events presented here constrain the location of the anomaly quite well, and indicate a possible short- and long-period S -wave amplitude diminution associated with it. When the travel-time data are corrected for the estimated effects of these two anomalies, a systematic regional variation in ScS-S station residuals is apparent between stations east of and west of the Rocky Mountains. One possible explanation of this is a long wavelength lateral variation in the shear velocity structure of the lower mantle at depths greater than 2000 km beneath North America.  相似文献

P-wave velocity anisotropy in crystalline rocks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary. Compressional wave velocities and anisotropy coefficients determined at high hydrostatic pressures are compiled from the data published for the main types of crystalline rocks. The crack-free elastic anisotropy of igneous crustal rocks is generally very low, between 1 and 3 per cent on average. The anisotropy of metamorphic rocks is higher (up to 22 per cent), but very variable. The average anisotropy coefficients in schists and amphibolites are about 10 per cent, in gneisses between 3 and 7 per cent, and in granulites less than 3 per cent. The average anisotropy of olivine ultramafites is between 7 and 12 per cent, whereas in pyroxenites and eclogites it is usually less than 4 per cent. A comparison of ranges of average velocities and average anisotropies for the individual rock groups suggests that, whereas in the crust the lateral velocity variations are mainly due to compositional changes, in the olivine of the uppermost mantle the velocity variations due to anisotropic structures could be of the same magnitude as the variations due to inhomogeneities.  相似文献

The earthquakes in the seismicity belt extending through Indonesia, New Guinea, Vanuatu and Fiji to the Tonga–Kermadec subduction zone recorded at the 65 portable broad-band stations deployed during the Skippy experiment from 1993–1996 provide good coverage of the lithosphere and mantle under the Australian continent, Coral Sea and Tasman Sea.
The variation in structure in the upper part of the mantle is characterized by deter-mining a suite of 1-D structures from stacked record sections utilizing clear P and S arrivals, prepared for all propagation paths lying within a 10° azimuth band. The azimuth of these bands is rotated by 20° steps with four parallel corridors for each azimuth. This gives 26 separate azimuthal corridors for which 15 independent 1-D seismic velocity structures have been derived, which show significant variation in P and S structure.
The set of 1-D structures is combined to produce a 3-D representation by projecting the velocity values along the ray path using a turning point approximation and stacking into 3-D cells (5° by 50 km in depth). Even though this procedure will tend to underestimate wave-speed perturbations, S -velocity deviations from the ak135 reference model exceed 6 per cent in the lithosphere.
In the uppermost mantle the results display complex features and very high S -wave speeds beneath the Precambrian shields with a significant low-velocity zone beneath. High velocities are also found towards the base of the transition zone, with high S -wave speeds beneath the continent and high P -wave speeds beneath the ocean. The wave-speed patterns agree well with independent surface wave studies and delay time tomography studies in the zones of common coverage.  相似文献

Seismic anisotropy within the uppermost mantle of southern Germany   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents an updated interpretation of seismic anisotropy within the uppermost mantle of southern Germany. The dense network of reversed and crossing refraction profiles in this area made it possible to observe almost 900 traveltimes of the Pn phase that could be effectively used in a time-term analysis to determine horizontal velocity distribution immediately below the Moho. For 12 crossing profiles, amplitude ratios of the Pn phase compared to the dominant crustal phase were utilized to resolve azimuthally dependent velocity gradients with depth. A P -wave anisotropy of 3–4 per cent in a horizontal plane immediately below the Moho at a depth of 30 km, increasing to 11 per cent at a depth of 40 km, was determined. For the axis of the highest velocity of about 8.03 km s−1 at a depth of 30 km a direction of N31°F was obtained. The azimuthal dependence of the observed Pn amplitude is explained by an azimuth-dependent sub-Moho velocity gradient decreasing from 0.06 s−1 in the fast direction to 0 s−1 in the slow direction of horizontal P -wave velocity. From the seismic results in this study a petrological model suggesting a change of modal composition and percentage of oriented olivine with depth was derived.  相似文献

We propose approximate equations for P -wave ray theory Green's function for smooth inhomogeneous weakly anisotropic media. Equations are based on perturbation theory, in which deviations of anisotropy from isotropy are considered to be the first-order quantities. For evaluation of the approximate Green's function, earlier derived first-order ray tracing equations and in this paper derived first-order dynamic ray tracing equations are used.
The first-order ray theory P -wave Green's function for inhomogeneous, weakly anisotropic media of arbitrary symmetry depends, at most, on 15 weak-anisotropy parameters. For anisotropic media of higher-symmetry than monoclinic, all equations involved differ only slightly from the corresponding equations for isotropic media. For vanishing anisotropy, the equations reduce to equations for computation of standard ray theory Green's function for isotropic media. These properties make the proposed approximate Green's function an easy and natural substitute of traditional Green's function for isotropic media.
Numerical tests for configuration and models used in seismic prospecting indicate negligible dependence of accuracy of the approximate Green's function on inhomogeneity of the medium. Accuracy depends more strongly on strength of anisotropy in general and on angular variation of phase velocity due to anisotropy in particular. For example, for anisotropy of about 8 per cent, considered in the examples presented, the relative errors of the geometrical spreading are usually under 1 per cent; for anisotropy of about 20 per cent, however, they may locally reach as much as 20 per cent.  相似文献

Rayleigh-wave phase velocities are investigated in the period range 17–100 s by the two-station method over several paths covering most of French Polynesia. Our results confirm the validity of theoretical models obtained through regionalization of data pertaining to longer paths. They also exhibit a 2–3.5 per cent anisotropy, with the axis of maximum velocity oriented in the direction of spreading of the plate. Part of this anisotropy is, however, due to the presence of the Tuamotu archipelago; when this is removed, the remaining anisotropy (about 1.5 per cent) correlates with the present direction of spreading, indicating that a relaxation of the anisotropy has taken place since the East Pacific ridge jump. Finally, the presence of the Tuamotu Islands explains anomalous waveshapes for surface waves travelling in their vicinity, due to multipathing through their faster structure.  相似文献

High-frequency body waves recorded by a temporary seismic array across the surface rupture trace of the 1992 Landers, California, earthquake were used to determine fault-zone structures down to the seismogenic depth. We first developed a technique to use generalized ray theory to compute synthetic seismograms for arbitrarily oriented tabular low-velocity fault-zone models. We then generated synthetic waveform record sections of a linear array across a vertical fault zone. They show that both arrival times and waveforms of P and S waves vary systematically across the fault due to transmissions and reflections from boundaries of the low-velocity fault zone. The waveform characteristics and arrival-time patterns in the record sections allow us to locate the boundaries of the fault zone and to determine its P - and S -wave velocities independently as well as its depth extent. Therefore, the trade-off between the fault-zone width and velocities can be avoided. Applying the method to the Landers waveform data reveals a low-velocity zone with a width of 270–360 m and a 35–60 per cent reduction in P and S velocities relative to the host rock. The analysis suggests that the low-velocity zone extends to a depth of ∼7 km. The western boundary of the low-velocity zone coincides with the observed main surface rupture trace.  相似文献

Transverse isotropy of thinly layered media   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary. Three problems of seismic anisotropy in thinly layered media (TPM) are discussed: (1) A dependence is established for the character of the ray velocity of longitudinal low-frequency waves on the ratio of P - and S -wave velocities in thin layers. (2) Conditions are specified for cusps on SV -wave surfaces. Nomograms are suggested for quick estimation of these conditions. (3) A comparison is made between TPM anisotropy and other types of transversely isotropic media.  相似文献

Teleseismic P -wave recordings are analysed in the frequency range 0.3–6  Hz to derive structural (statistical) parameters of the lithosphere underneath the French Massif Central. For this we analyse differences in frequency-dependent intensities of the mean wavefield and the fluctuation wavefield. It is possible to discriminate a weak fluctuation regime of the wavefield in the frequency range below 1  Hz and a strong fluctuation regime starting above 1  Hz and continuing to higher frequencies. The observed wavefield fluctuations in the frequency range 0.3–3  Hz can be explained by scattering of the teleseismic P wave front at elastic inhomogeneities in the lithosphere. A statistical distribution of the inhomogeneities is assumed and the concept of random media is applied. The lithospheric structure under the Massif Central can be described as a 70  km thick heterogeneous layer with velocity fluctuations of 3–7 per cent and correlation lengths of the heterogeneities of 1–16  km.  相似文献

We describe a waveform modelling technique and demonstrate its application to determine the crust- and upper-mantle velocity structure beneath Africa. Our technique uses a parallelized reflectivity method to compute synthetic seismograms and fits the observed waveforms by a global optimization technique based on a Very Fast Simulated Annealing (VFSA). We match the S , Sp, SsPmP and shear-coupled PL phases in seismograms of deep (200–800 km), moderate-to-large magnitude (5.5–7.0) earthquakes recorded teleseismically at permanent broad-band seismic stations in Africa. Using our technique we produce P - and S -wave velocity models of crust and upper mantle beneath Africa. Additionally, our use of the shear-coupled PL phase, wherever observed, improves the constraints for lower crust- and upper-mantle velocity structure beneath the corresponding seismic stations. Our technique retains the advantages of receiver function methods, uses a different part of the seismogram, is sensitive to both P - and S -wave velocities directly, and obtains helpful constraints in model parameters in the vicinity of the Moho. The resulting range of crustal thicknesses beneath Africa (21–46 km) indicates that the crust is thicker in south Africa, thinner in east Africa and intermediate in north and west Africa. Crustal P - (4.7–8 km s−1) and S -wave velocities (2.5–4.7  km s−1) obtained in this study show that in some parts of the models, these are slower in east Africa and faster in north, west and south Africa. Anomalous crustal low-velocity zones are also observed in the models for seismic stations in the cratonic regions of north, west and south Africa. Overall, the results of our study are consistent with earlier models and regional tectonics of Africa.  相似文献

Summary. Earlier interpretations of P n travel-times from the extensive quarry-blast observation scheme in western Germany — now supplemented by explosion data from the 1972 Rhinegraben experiment — have been checked and enhanced using the new MOZAIC time-term method. The large data set (762 travel times) continues to require a considerable anisotropy of upper-mantle P velocity. The resulting estimates of the overall velocity variation — probably 0.50–0.60 km/s about a mean value of 8.05 km/s, that is, 6 to 7 per cent anisotropy — and of the direction of the maximum velocity (close to 20° E of north) are reasonably reliable. However, the detailed form of the anisotropy is obscured by various limitations of the data.
These results allow a realistic assessment of the resolving power of refraction-based studies of velocity anisotropy in the lithosphere. It is concluded that though such studies are probably adequate if the measurement of in situ anisotropy is required within the context of a generalized discussion of lithospheric dynamics they are not appropriate if a detailed specification of the anisotropy is desired.  相似文献

We analyse the relation between rock fabric, expressed by the preferred orientation of rock-forming minerals and microcracks, and elastic anisotropy of crystalline rock from the KTB pilot well. Detailed analyses of mineralogical composition, textures and microcrack fabrics were performed. In addition, ultrasonic velocity measurements of spherical samples in several directions were carried out at various confining pressures, and inverted in terms of the complete set of 21 elastic constants. By comparing the elastic tensors of the rocks at the final confining pressure (at which most of the microcracks are closed) with those at a lower pressure level, it is possible to separate the anisotropy induced by microcracks from that caused by mineral alignment. In contrast to previous work, no a priori knowledge of the type of anisotropy (triclinic, monoclinic, orthotropic etc.), or of the spatial orientation of the symmetry elements (planes, axes) of the cracked rock or of the intact rock is assumed. Furthermore, no restrictive assumptions on the orientation distribution function and the shape of the cracks are needed.
The results show that the elastic anisotropy characteristics, whether they are related to the microcracks or to the rock-forming minerals, are clearly correlated with the directly observed rock fabrics. We show that the symmetry directions of the mineral fabric and of microcrack fabric agree. A further result is that the microcrack-induced anisotropy dominates the other causes of anisotropy at confining pressures smaller than a few tens of megapascals, the situation being reversed at higher pressures. The laboratory data are quantitatively compared with sonic log data from the KTB well, showing the influence of pore fluids, effective pressure and crack density reduction on the anisotropy in situ .  相似文献

We have analysed the fundamental mode of Love and Rayleigh waves generated by 12 earthquakes located in the mid-Atlantic ridge and Jan Mayen fracture zone. Using the multiple filter analysis technique, we isolated the Rayleigh and Love wave group velocities for periods between 10 and 50  s. The surface wave propagation paths were divided into five groups, and average group velocities calculated for each group. The average group velocities were inverted and produced shear wave velocity models that correspond to a quasi-continental oceanic structure in the Greenland–Norwegian Sea region. Although resolution is poor at shallow depth, we obtained crustal thickness values of about 18  km in the Norwegian Sea area and 9  km in the region between Svalbard and Iceland. The abnormally thick crust in the Norwegian Sea area is ascribed to magmatic underplating and the thermal blanketing effect of sedimentary layers. Maximum crustal shear velocities vary between 3.5 and 3.9  km  s−1 for most paths. An average lithospheric thickness of 60  km was observed, which is lower than expected for oceanic-type structure of similar age. We also observed low shear wave velocities in the lower crust and upper mantle. We suggest that high heat flow extending to depths of about 30  km beneath the surface can account for the thin lithosphere and observed low velocities. Anisotropy coefficients of 1–5 per cent in the shallow layers and >7 per cent in the upper mantle point to the existence of polarization anisotropy in the region.  相似文献

Summary. The phase velocity dispersion of fundamental mode Rayleigh waves (period range 13–127 s) is determined by the interstation method for three profiles that traverse the North Sea region of northwest Europe. The resulting observations have been combined to produce a regional phase velocity curve with 95 per cent confidence intervals, which belongs to the aseismic continental platform category of Knopoff.
Inversions of the regional phase velocity curve by the'Hedgehog'method indicate that the North Sea region is characterized by an upper mantle low-velocity zone of S -wave velocity 4.35–4.45 km/s between depths of approximately 85–200 km.  相似文献

First-arrival waveforms remain underutilized in crustal refraction–reflection seismology by mostly reducing them to traveltime picks. However, as in earthquake seismology, the waveforms also contain important information about shallow near-receiver structures. We illustrate the use of three-component waveform analysis on the records from the ACCRETE wide-angle data set (SE Alaska and British Columbia; 1994), apply the Receiver Function (RF) methodology to the codas of P -wave arrivals, and draw two important conclusions. First, the P -wave polarization azimuths are found to be controlled by the near-receiver structures and virtually unrelated to the source–receiver backazimuths, from which they deviate by up to ∼40°. This observation might be important for studies of anisotropy and also for earthquake RF studies. Second, after correcting for the polarization azimuths, clear P / S mode conversions are reliably detected within 80–400 ms following the primary arrivals. The conversions are interpreted as originating at the base of the sedimentary cover of the fjord channel. In most cases, imaging of the basement requires only several records; however, notable exceptions are also found and interpreted as caused by multipathing, localized scattering, and onsets of crustal and Moho reflections. The ACCRETE example shows that RF methodology could be useful for constraining sediment thickness and deriving P - and S -wave receiver statics in land refraction surveys where collocated reflection profiles are not available. In addition, RFs from repeatable controlled sources could be useful for testing and calibration of RF techniques.  相似文献

Broad-band data from South American earthquakes recorded by Californian seismic networks are analysed using a newly developed seismic wave migration method—the slowness backazimuth weighted migration (SBWM). Using the SBWM, out-of-plane seismic P -wave reflections have been observed. The reflection locations extend throughout the Earth's lower mantle, down to the core–mantle boundary (CMB) and coincide with the edges of tomographically mapped high seismic velocities. Modelling using synthetic seismograms suggests that a narrow (10–15 km) low- or high-velocity lamella with about 2 per cent velocity contrast can reproduce the observed reflected waveforms, but other explanations may exist. Considering the reflection locations and synthetic modelling, the observed out-of-plane energy is well explained by underside reflections off a sharp reflector at the base of the subducted lithosphere. We also detect weaker reflections corresponding to the tomographically mapped top of the slab, which may arise from the boundary between the Nazca plate and the overlying former basaltic oceanic crust. The joint interpretation of the waveform modelling and geodynamic considerations indicate mass flux of the former oceanic lithosphere and basaltic crust across the 660 km discontinuity, linking processes and structure at the top and bottom of the Earth's mantle, supporting the idea of whole mantle convection.  相似文献

Summary. The analysis of data of seismic crustal studies in the USSR, obtained from waves propagating at different azimuths, reveals considerable horizontal and vertical inhomogeneity of the crust. Against this background it is difficult to predict what kind of velocity anisotropy can be expected in the continental crust. The rare cases of disagreement in velocities on intersecting profiles can be attributed both to anisotropy and to horizontal crustal inhomogeneity. There is a definite disagreement in layer velocities measured by reflected waves: fine layers in the crust and upper mantle have been found to have anomalously high velocities. The role of anisotropy in these events is not clear. The frequently observed splitting of S -wave with different polarization, however, positively implies anisotropy in the Earth's crust.  相似文献

Earthquake seismograms that show Doppler effects due to crack propagation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary. Examples are presented of earthquake P -wave pulses seen on broadband seismograms, to show that on such recordings the pulse shapes are more clearly seen than on conventional short-period and long-period seismograms. Most of the broadband seismograms have been chosen because they show marked differences between the pulse lengths of P and those of the surface reflections. In addition some of the pulses appear to have smooth onsets and abrupt trailing edges so that the onset of the pulse is difficult to observe and the largest amplitude arrivals seen on the seismogram coincide not with the onset of motion but with the termination of motion: that is the large arrivals mark stopping phases of motion.
We assume that the differences in pulse length are due to the effects of a moving source – that is a Doppler effect – and that the pulses with smooth onsets and abrupt trailing edges can be modelled simply by a source propagating on a line with low radiation amplitude at the start of motion. A trial and error method guided by a published fault plane solution is then used to obtain a fit between observed and computed seismograms for one of the earthquakes. This process leads to an estimate of the crack speed of about 1.4 times the 5-wave speed.
The errors that may arise in estimating source depths and orientation, if stopping phases are not recognized as such, is discussed.  相似文献
