To a Young Medical Geographer

Editor's Note : The views and opinions expressed in the following paper have been written in the form of a letter or conversation between a dissertation advisor and an advanced graduate student in medical geography. It emphasizes the pervasive qualities of the health component of human behavior, and hopefully transmits aspects of human behavior that are taking hold in medical-ecological research. It attempts to suggest what at least one practicing medical geographer thinks a major facet of the field will be like as it matures. The holistic perspective that it envisages seems to be taking hold in neighboring disciplines—or perhaps “interdisciplines”as they might someday be called. The speculative quality of the presentation is intended to serve as a possible springboard for professional interaction.     

第二届中日韩青年地理学家国际学术研讨会在日本熊本举行

Sponsored by the Association of Japanese Geographers （AJG） and jointly undertaken by the Geographical Society of China （GSC） and the Korean Geographical Society （KGS） and Kumamoto University, the Second Japan-Korea-China Symposium of Young Geographers was held at Kumamoto University in Japan on October 2-5, 2007. It was a successful continuation after the First China-Japan-Korea Symposium of Young Geographers launched by the GSC and held at Beijing Normal University in China on September 16-18, 2006. The 2007 project was also completed with the aid of Professor Murayama Yuji, from University of Tsukuba and the Kumamoto International Convention and Tourism Bureau.

Kindergarten Geography: Teaching Diversity to Young People

Abstract

A Southern Poverty Law Center grant enabled purchasing dolls representing children of different races, ethnicity, and condition of disability. The teacher used these with other materials to sensitize kindergarten children to human differences. She directed them to cut pictures from National Geographic Magazine showing people who are “somehow different/' Responses from children were classified. Nine commented on adornment, three on household setting, two on occupation, and one on race. Little research exists on teaching geography to kindergarteners except on the ability to read maps. The authors contend that kindergarteners are quite ready to learn about regional differences among human populations.     

Locating art worlds: London and the making of Young British art

The international prominence of Young British art (YBa) in the 1990s gave London a contemporary art movement to match its role as one of the world's key centres of art exchange. Examining the rise of YBa in retrospect, this paper is concerned with the difference place makes in helping to shape the (hi)story of art. It is argued that London's established role as an international art centre was crucial in providing the density of networks, associations and facilities necessary to sustain an international art movement. At the same time, YBa's success can be linked to London's changing status as a cultural capital, as well as profound changes in the business of contemporary art. Attention is drawn to the ways in which the international art world is dominated by networks formed within and across a limited number of world art cities.     

青年科学基金助推地理学人才成长

本文以国家自然科学基金委员会地理学科1987-2016年青年科学基金项目为研究对象,在对项目的申请人/负责人信息、依托单位及后续资助项目等信息进行整理、统计与分析的基础上,阐述了地理学科青年科学基金项目的分支学科和地域分布特点,以及项目负责人性别、年龄、单位及职称结构的特点,分析了项目负责人受青年科学基金资助之后,继续申请国家自然科学基金项目的能力。研究表明,近30年来地理学青年科学基金项目的实施对地理学人才成长发挥了重要作用,稳定地资助了一大批不同领域的优秀地理青年学者,为中国地理学持续发展所需人才的培养开发打下了坚实的基础。
