We report and discuss the results of a 22-cm radio survey carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) covering the A3528 complex, a chain formed by the merging ACO clusters A3528–A3530–A3532 , located in the central region of the Shapley Concentration. Simultaneous 13-cm observations are also presented. Our final catalogue includes a total of 106 radio sources above the flux density limit of 0.8 mJy. By cross-correlation with optical and spectroscopic catalogues we found 32 optical counterparts, nine of them belonging to the A3528 complex.
We explored the effects of cluster mergers on the radio emission properties of radio galaxies by means of the radio luminosity function (RLF) and radio source counts. We found that the radio source counts are consistent with the background counts, as already found for the A3558 complex. The RLF for this complex is consistent, in both shape and normalization, with the general cluster luminosity function for early-type galaxies derived by Ledlow & Owen. This result is different from the one we obtained for the A3558 merging complex, the RLF of which is significantly lower than that derived by Ledlow & Owen.
We propose that the different stage of the merger is responsible for the different RLFs in the two cluster complexes in the core of the Shapley Concentration. The early stage of merger for the A3528 complex, proposed by many authors, may not yet have affected the radio properties of cluster galaxies, while in the more much advanced merger in the A3558 region we actually see the effects of this process on the radio emission.  相似文献

We present the results of a 22-cm radio survey carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) covering the A3558 complex, a chain formed by the merging ACO clusters A3556–A3558–A3562 and the two groups SC 1327−312 and SC 1323−313, located in the central region of the Shapley Concentration. The purpose of our survey is to study the effects of cluster mergers on the statistical properties of radio galaxies and to investigate the connection between mergers and the presence of radio haloes and relic sources.
We found that the radio source counts in the A3558 complex are consistent with the background source counts. The much higher optical density compared with the background is not reflected as a higher density of radio sources. Furthermore, we found that no correlation exists between the local density and the radio source power, and that steep-spectrum radio galaxies are not segregated in denser optical regions.
The radio luminosity function for elliptical and S0 galaxies is significantly lower than for cluster early-type galaxies and for those not selected to be in clusters at radio powers log  P 1.4≳22.5, implying that the probability of a galaxy becoming a radio source above this power limit is lower in the Shapley Concentration compared with any other environment. Possible explanations will be presented.
The detection of a head–tail source in the centre of A3562, coupled with careful inspection of the 20-cm NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and of 36-cm MOST observations, allowed us to spot two extended sources in the region between A3562 and SC 1329−313, i.e. a candidate radio halo at the centre of A3562 and low brightness extended emission around a 14.96-mag Shapley galaxy. The relation between these two extended galaxies and the ongoing group merger in this region of the Shapley Concentration are discussed.  相似文献

Cygnus A
Cygnus A was the first hyper-active galaxy discovered, and it remains by far the closest of the ultra-luminous radio galaxies. As such, Cygnus A has played a fundamental role in the study of virtually all aspects of extreme activity in galaxies. We present a review of jet theory for powering the double-lobed radio emitting structures in powerful radio galaxies, followed by a review of observations of Cygnus A in the radio, optical, and X-ray relevant to testing various aspects of jet theory. Issues addressed include: jet structure from pc- to kpc-scales, jet stability, confinement, composition, and velocity, the double shock structure for the jet terminus and the origin of multiple radio hotspots, the nature of the filamentary structure in the radio lobes, and the hydrodynamic evolution of the radio lobes within a dense cluster atmosphere, including an analysis of pressure balance between the various gaseous components. Also discussed are relativistic particle acceleration and loss mechanisms in Cygnus A, as well as magnetic field strengths and geometries both within the radio source, and in the intracluster medium. We subsequently review the classification, cluster membership, and the emission components of the Cygnus A galaxy. The origin of the activity is discussed. Concentrating on the nuclear regions of the galaxy, we review the evidence for an obscured QSO, also given the constraints on the orientation of the radio source axis with respect to the sky plane. We present an overview of models of central engines in AGN and observations of Cygnus A which may be relevant to testing such models. We conclude with a brief section concerning the question of whether Cygnus A is representative of powerful high redshift radio galaxies. Received October 10, 1995  相似文献

A sample of 2712 radio-luminous galaxies is defined from the second data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) by cross-comparing the main spectroscopic galaxy sample with two radio surveys: the National Radio Astronomy Observatories (NRAO) Very Large Array (VLA) Sky Survey (NVSS) and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters (FIRST) survey. The comparison is carried out in a multistage process and makes optimal use of both radio surveys by exploiting the sensitivity of the NVSS to extended and multicomponent radio sources in addition to the high angular resolution of the FIRST images. A radio source sample with 95 per cent completeness and 98.9 per cent reliability is achieved, far better than would be possible for this sample if only one of the surveys was used. The radio source sample is then divided into two classes: radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) and galaxies in which the radio emission is dominated by star formation. The division is based on the location of a galaxy in the plane of 4000-Å break strength versus radio luminosity per unit stellar mass and provides a sample of 2215 radio-loud AGN and 497 star-forming galaxies brighter than 5 mJy at 1.4 GHz. A full catalogue of positions and radio properties is provided for these sources. The local radio luminosity function is then derived both for radio-loud AGN and for star-forming galaxies and is found to be in agreement with previous studies. By using the radio to far-infrared (FIR) correlation, the radio luminosity function of star-forming galaxies is also compared to the luminosity function derived in the FIR. It is found to agree well at high luminosities but less so at lower luminosities, confirming that the linearity of the radio to FIR correlation breaks down below about 1022 W Hz−1 at 1.4 GHz.  相似文献

A nonlinear analysis of the daily 10.7-cm radio flux values for each of Solar Cycles 19, 20, and 21 is used to determine if the results match those of the International Sunspot Numbers for each of these cycles. Fractals and chaos are described and a brief review of utilizing fractals and chaos is given. The origin of the 10.7-cm radio flux is discussed and a short review of recent work discussing its measurement and its relation to the international sunspot number and other proxies for solar activity cycles given. The parameters used to describe chaos for the 10.7-cm radio flux are discussed. The length of the data sets for either statistical analysis or nonlinear analysis of the 10.7-cm radio flux values is considered. These results indicate that the 10.7-cm radio flux values appear to be stochastic for Cycle 19 and chaotic for Cycles 20 and 21. The International Sunspot Numbers show similar behavior for these three cycles. A day-by-day comparison of the dimensionless 10.7-cm radio flux values and the dimensionless International Sunspot Numbers differences shows a linear trend. The results remain consistent in that the 10.7-cm radio flux values indicate, as did the International Sunspot Numbers, that there is a transition from stochastic behavior for Cycle 19 to chaotic behavior in Cycles 20 and 21. The day-by-day comparison of the 10.7-cm radio flux values and the International Sunspot Numbers emphasizes that the 10.7?cm radio flux values are responding to the magnetic field associated with the sunspots.  相似文献

It is observed that while there exists a strong correlation between the decay constant and the exciter duration for isolated type III radio bursts, it is absent for those type III radio bursts which are preceded by type IIIb radio bursts. A possible theoretical explanation for the presence of correlation in one case and lack of it in the other is proposed.  相似文献

We present ROSAT PSPC observations of the twin-jet radio galaxy 3C 449. The soft X-ray emission from this object is dominated by an extended halo with a scale comparable to that of the radio source. The asymmetry of the X-ray emission is reflected in that of the radio lobes, providing evidence that the behaviour of the jets is strongly influenced by the external medium. A region of reduced X-ray surface brightness coincident with the southern radio lobe of 3C 449 suggests that the radio source has displaced thermal plasma from the X-ray-emitting halo. However, the minimum pressure in the radio lobe is considerably lower than our estimates of the pressure in the external medium. We discuss the implications for the dynamics of the radio source.  相似文献

The relative orientations of the optical and radio axes of radio galaxies are analyzed using data for 271 objects. It is found that the radio axes correlate with the minor axes of the optical galaxies for more elongated radio galaxies (K > 2.5, where K is the ratio of the lengths of the major and minor axes of the radio image) and for radio galaxies of the class FRII, whereas for less elongated radio galaxies (K < 2.5) and radio galaxies of the class FRI the radio axes correlate with the major axes of the optical galaxy. In both cases the correlation turns out to be more significant when the radio galaxies are classified in terms of their elongation than when they are classified in terms of the Fanaroff-Riley criterion. The classification in terms of elongation of the radio image can therefore be of interest for understanding overall problems associated with the mechanism of formation and evolution of radio galaxies. A theoretical foundation for such a classification may be the alternative mechanism of formation of radio galaxies from relativistic plasma ejected from the central part of the optical galaxy and moving in its large-scale, dipole magnetic field. A new sample of radio sources, with the designated name CENSORS (A Combined EIS–NVSS Survey Of Radio Sources), has been defined by combining the National Radio Astronomy Observatory Very Large Array Sky Survey (NVSS) at 1.4 GHz with the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) Patch D, a 3° by 2° region of sky centred at RA     , Dec. −21°00'00' (J2000). New radio observations of 199 NVSS radio sources with NVSS flux densities   S 1.4 GHz > 7.8 mJy  are presented, and are compared with the EIS I -band imaging observations which reach a depth of   I ∼ 23  ; optical identifications are obtained for over two-thirds of the ∼150 confirmed radio sources within the EIS field. The radio sources have a median linear size of 6 arcsec, consistent with the trend for lower flux density radio sources to be less extended. Other radio source properties, such as the lobe flux density ratios, are consistent with those of brighter radio source samples. From the optical information, 30–40 per cent of the sources are expected to lie at redshifts   z ≳ 1.5  .
One of the key goals of this survey is to accurately determine the high-redshift evolution of the radio luminosity function. These radio sources are at the ideal flux density level to achieve this goal; at redshifts   z ∼ 2  they have luminosities which are around the break of the luminosity function and so provide a much more accurate census of the radio source population at those redshifts than the existing studies of extreme, high radio power sources. Other survey goals include investigating the dual-population unification schemes for radio sources, studying the radio luminosity dependence of the evolution of radio source environments, and understanding the radio power dependence of the K – z relation for radio galaxies.  相似文献

We show that the northern middle radio lobe of Cen A, an intriguing and much debated manifestation of radio lobe asymmetry, can be understood in terms of a direct interaction of the northern jet with a gaseous cloud associated with a stellar shell. This same basic mechanism was proposed earlier for the northern inner lobe, but new data allows a more detailed case to be made for the northern middle lobe. Although such an interaction can presently be demonstrated only for Cen A, the nearest radio galaxy, it is likely to be a fairly common occurrence and it provides an alternative to models invoking episodic nuclear activity, possibly accompanied with jet precession, for radio galaxies with multiple lobes and S-shapes. This proposed scenario may also play a key role in the origin of prominent radio galaxy morphological classes, such as the Wide-Angle-Tail sources and the Z-symmetric X-shaped radio sources. The strong tendency for radio lobes to be more distorted in double radio sources with jets that are in closer alignment with the optical major axis of the host elliptical galaxy can likewise be understood in terms of jet–shell interactions. In the frequent cases when jet activity is triggered by mergers of a large elliptical galaxy with a disk galaxy containing cold gas the impact of the gas associated with stellar shells upon the jets is likely to have significant manifestations.  相似文献

A solar radio spectrometer records solar radio radiation in the radio waveband. Such solar radio radiation spanning multiple frequency channels and over a short time period could provide a solar radio spectrum which is a two dimensional image. The vertical axis of a spectrum represents frequency channel and the horizontal axis signifies time. Intrinsically, time dependence exists between neighboring columns of a spectrum since solar radio radiation varies continuously over time. Thus, a spectrum can be treated as a time series consisting of all columns of a spectrum, while treating it as a general image would lose its time series property. A recurrent neural network(RNN) is designed for time series analysis. It can explore the correlation and interaction between neighboring inputs of a time series by augmenting a loop in a network. This paper makes the first attempt to utilize an RNN, specifically long short-term memory(LSTM), for solar radio spectrum classification. LSTM can mine well the context of a time series to acquire more information beyond a non-time series model. As such, as demonstrated by our experimental results, LSTM can learn a better representation of a spectrum, and thus contribute better classification.  相似文献

An overview is presented of a number of astrometry and astrophysics programs based on radio sources from the Parkes 2.7 GHz catalogues. The programs cover the optical identification and spectroscopy of flat-spectrum Parkes sources and the determination of their milliarc-second radio structures and positions. Work is also in progress to tie together the radio and Hipparcos positional reference frames. A parallel program of radio and optical astrometry of southern radio stars is also under way.  相似文献

The relationship between the IR luminosity of spiral galaxies in the 40-120 mm range and their radio luminosity at 0.408,1.49,2.38,5.0, and 10.7 GHz is investigated. At all frequencies there is a close correlation between the radio luminosity and the infrared luminosity of spiral galaxies. The slopes of the relationships between radio and IR luminosities are less than unity at all frequencies, but they differ little from it within the error limits. A close correlation also exists between the fluxes of radio and IR emission. The correlation coefficients are high for objects of all morphological subtypes, while the relationships between radio and IR luminosities are nearly linear. They are also nearly linear for spiral galaxies of different classes in the Byurakan classification. It is also shown that the correlation between radio and IR luminosities is weakened for high IR luminosities. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 43, No. 1, pp. 33-44, January–March, 2000.  相似文献

Three decades have passed since the supernova SN 1987A was observed in the Large Magellanic Cloud, inside which the product is most likely a neutron star (NS) formed in the core collapse explosion.Although lots of observations with sensitive radio telescopes have taken place, astronomers have not yet detected any evidence for a radio pulsar around the remnant of 1987A. To investigate pulsars inside the SN remnants, we calculate the cut-off oscillation frequency of the plasma around the presumed NS inside SN1987A, as shown to be about 33 GHz at present (2018 CE), which is much higher than the favorite “searching window” (e.g. L-band ∼ 1.4 GHz) of radio pulsar surveys that have been commonly exploited by astronomers. Since radio waves with frequencies lower than the plasma cut-off frequency cannot penetrate the SN remnant media, we suggest that astronomers use higher frequency bands to search for a pulsar in SN 1987A.Furthermore, with the expansion of SN remnant media, we find that the plasma cut-off frequency can decay to the L-band (1.4 GHz) in the future. The strategy of finding a pulsar of SN 1987A is that either the high frequency bands of radio telescopes, or the high energy detections at Gamma-ray and X-ray bands by space satellites are applied.  相似文献

We explore the relationship between the extended radio and line emission for a radio-loud quasar sample including both core-dominated and lobe-dominated quasars. A strong correlation is present between the extended radio and broad-line emission. The core emission is also correlated with the broad-line emission for core-dominated quasars in the sample. The statistical behaviour of the core emission of lobe-dominated quasars is rather different from that of core-dominated quasars. The extended radio luminosity is a good tracer for jet power, while the core luminosity can only be a jet power tracer for core-dominated quasars.  相似文献

Radio relics in galaxy clusters can be electrons accelerated at cluster merger shocks or adiabatically compressed fossil radio cocoons or dying radio galaxies. The spectral evolution of radio relics is affected by the surrounding thermal plasma. We present a low frequency study of three radio relics representing environments of dense cluster core (A4038), cluster outskirts (A1664) and filaments (A786). The properties of the relics are found to be consistent with the effect of confinement by external medium if the effects of projection are ignored.  相似文献

We review the statistical properties of the main populations of radio sources, as emerging from radio and millimeter sky surveys. Recent determinations of local luminosity functions are presented and compared with earlier estimates still in widespread use. A number of unresolved issues are discussed. These include: the (possibly luminosity-dependent) decline of source space densities at high redshifts; the possible dichotomies between evolutionary properties of low- versus high-luminosity and of flat- versus steep-spectrum AGN-powered radio sources; and the nature of sources accounting for the upturn of source counts at sub-milli-Jansky (mJy) levels. It is shown that straightforward extrapolations of evolutionary models, accounting for both the far-IR counts and redshift distributions of star-forming galaxies, match the radio source counts at flux-density levels of tens of μJy remarkably well. We consider the statistical properties of rare but physically very interesting classes of sources, such as GHz Peak Spectrum and ADAF/ADIOS sources, and radio afterglows of γ-ray bursts. We also discuss the exploitation of large-area radio surveys to investigate large-scale structure through studies of clustering and the Integrated Sachs–Wolfe effect. Finally, we briefly describe the potential of the new and forthcoming generations of radio telescopes. A compendium of source counts at different frequencies is given in Supplementary Material.  相似文献

Seven 1.5° × 1.5° fields in which “guest stars” had been reported by ancient oriental astronomers have been surveyed at 610 MHz for radio remnants with the Westerbork Telescope. No diffuse radio emission was detected. A list of discrete radio sources in the fields is given together with suggested optical identifications for those sources with |b| < 15°.  相似文献
