Geochemistry of the ophiolite and oceanic island basalt in the Kangxian-Pipasi-Nanping tectonic melange zone, South Qinling and their tectonic significance

Detailed studies indicate that Kangxian-Pipasi-Nanping tectonic zone is a complicated melange zone which includes many tectonic slabs of different origins. Ophiolite (MORB-type basalt), oceanic island tholeiite and alkaline basalt have been identified. Moreover, this tectonic melange zone is eastward connected with the Mianlue suture zone. The deformation characteristics, consisting components and volcanic rock geochemical features for the Kangxian-Pipasi-Nanping tectonic melange zone are much similar to those of the Mianlue suture zone and Deerni ophiolite. Therefore, the Kangxian-Pipasi-Nanping tectonic melange zone should be the westward extension part of the Mianlue suture zone. It indicates that the Mianlue suture zone had extended to the Nanping area.

A proposal that the yellow sands which commonly overlie Pleistocene eolianites along the west coast of Western Australia may have their origin from major extensions of inland deserts during times of severe aridity, is refuted on several grounds. The eolianites typically are deeply degraded remnants of the original coastal dunes, which contained a high content of non-calcareous detritus. Hence plentiful residual sand will accumulate during weathering of a dune. Studies on heavy mineral content of the yellow sands have shown that there is an inland ageing trend consistent with local derivation from successive dune belts, and have also pointed to local sources for yellow color in the sand, without need to postulate a distant source. Localized denudations have however occurred, during which sand is blown inland to leave tracts of bared limestone. No remnants of the alleged desert extensions exist in the hinterland of the coastal belt.

Constraints on processes affecting the origin of oceanic crust: Geochemical evidence from the 0–35 M. Y. age basalts,between 30°N and 40°N,MAR

DSDP Leg 82 sampled the oceanic crust, at 9 sites, west of the MAR between 33°N and 38°N, i.e., from the Azores “mantle plume” to south of the Hayes Fracture Zone. A specific aim of this DSDP Leg was to determine if the origin, and spatial and temporal evolution of oceanic mantle heterogeneity in the vicinity was related in a predictable manner to the “mantle plume”. Our approach in evaluating this question has been to select samples on the basis of trace element characteristics and age, for radiogenic isotope determinations.Isotopic and trace element heterogeneity occur both within between sites. While there is a crude correlation between trace element and isotopic characteristics, it is difficult to establish a detailed set of guidelines which would describe either trace element-isotope interrelationships. This difficulty is highlighted by the occurrence of basalts in one hole (H558) with trace element characteristics ranging from enriched to depleted, which can have identical or different isotopic characteristics.The origin, and spatial and temporal distribution of the heterogeneity cannot be reconciled with any simple models. A complicated scenario, involving mantle plums or blobs, recent local heterogeneity and complex mixing models, is required.
