This paper presents a new class of exact solutions describing the non-linear force-free field above a spatially localized photospheric bipolar magnetic region. An essential feature is the variation in all three Cartesian directions and this could not be modelled adequately with previously known symmetric force-free fields. Sequences of force-free fields are constructed and analyzed to simulate the slow growth of a pair of spots on the photosphere. The axis connecting the spots executes rotational motion, distorting the photospheric neutral line separating fluxes of opposite signs. We show directly from the analytic solutions that the resulting reversal of the positions of the spots relative to the background field is associated with (i) the creation of magnetic free energy, (ii) the severe shearing of localized low-lying loops in the vicinity where the photospheric transverse field aligns with the photospheric neutral line, and (iii) the emergence and disappearance of flux from the photosphere at these highly stressed regions. The model relates theoretically for the first time these different magnetic field features that have been suggested by observation and theoretical considerations to be flare precursors. A general formula, based on the virial theorem, is also given for the free energy of a force-free field, strictly in terms of the field value at the photosphere. This formula has obvious practical application. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

We present the results of a long-term photometric monitoring of the young single main-sequence star HD134319. It shows short-term variability of the optical-band continuum flux with a period of 4.448 days. The variability is attributed to dark spots or spots groups unevenly distributed in longitude on the star's photosphere, whose visibility is modulated by the star's rotation. Maps of the photospheric spot pattern have been obtained with light curve inversion techniques based on the Maximum Entropy and the Tikhonov regularization criteria. The overall spot pattern shows evidence for two long-lasting active longitudes located about 180° apart, with a total area of at least 16% of the stellar surface (assuming an inclination of the stellar rotation axis of 90° on the line of sight). The longitude distribution of the spot pattern and its total area do not show any clear evidence for a long-term variation along the five years of observations. A comparison with recent mean field dynamo models is also addressed, suggesting a possible interpretation of such a behaviour. Singularity, spectral type, youth and a high level of photospheric and chromospheric activity make HD134319 a suitable proxy for studying the magnetic activity of the young Sun not far after its arrival on the zero age main sequence.  相似文献

We present multi-instrument observations of active region (AR) 8048, made between 3 June and 5 June 1997, as part of the SOHO Joint Observing Program 33. This AR has a sigmoid-like global shape and undergoes transient brightenings in both soft X-rays and transition region (TR) lines. We compute a magneto-hydrostatic model of the AR magnetic field, using as boundary condition the photospheric observations of SOHO/MDI. The computed large-scale magnetic field lines show that the large-scale sigmoid is formed by two sets of coronal loops. Shorter loops, associated with the core of the SXT emission, coincide with the loops observed in the hotter CDS lines. These loops reveal a gradient of temperature, from 2 MK at the top to 1 MK at the ends. The field lines most closely matching these hot loops extend along the quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs) of the computed coronal field. The TR brightenings observed with SOHO/CDS can also be associated with the magnetic field topology, both QSL intersections with the photosphere, and places where separatrices issuing from bald patches (sites where field lines coming from the corona are tangent to the photosphere) intersect the photosphere. There are, furthermore, suggestions that the element abundances measured in the TR may depend on the type of topological structure present. Typically, the TR brightenings associated with QSLs have coronal abundances, while those associated with BP separatrices have abundances closer to photospheric values. We suggest that this difference is due to the location and manner in which magnetic reconnection occurs in two different topological structures. We present the evolution of magnetic field and its relationship with mag- netic(current)helicity in solar active regions from a series of photospheric vector magnetograms obtained by Huairou Solar Observing Station, longitudinal magne- tograms by MDI of SOHO and white light images of TRACE.The photospheric current helicity density is a quantity reflecting the local twisted magnetic field and is related to the remaining magnetic helicity in the photosphere, even if the mean current helicity density brings the general chiral property in a layer of solar active regions. As new magnetic flux emerges in active regions, changes of photospheric cur- rent helicity density with the injection of magnetic helicity into the corona from the subatmosphere can be detected, including changes in sign caused by the injection of magnetic helicity of opposite sign.Because the injection rate of magnetic helicity and photospheric current helicity density have different means in the solar atmosphere, the injected magnetic helicity is probably not proportional to the current helicity den- sity remaining in the photosphere. The evidence is that rotation of sunspots does not synchronize exactly with the twist of photospheric transverse magnetic field in some active regions(such as,delta active regions). They represent different aspects of mag- netic chirality.A combined analysis of the observational magnetic helicity parameters actually provides a relative complete picture of magnetic helicity and its transfer in the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

We observed the line-of-sight magnetic field in the chromosphereand photosphere of a large quiescent filament on the solar disk on September 6, 2001 using the Solar Magnetic Field Telescope in Huairou Solar Observing Station. The chromospheric and photospheric magnetograms together with Hβ filtergrams of the filament were examined. The filament was located on the neutral line of the large scale longitudinal magnetic field in the photosphere and the chromosphere. The lateral feet of the filament were found to be related to magnetic structures with opposite polarities. Two small lateral feet are linked to weak parasitic polarity. There is a negative magnetic structure in the photosphere under a break of the filament. At the location corresponding to the filament in the chromospheric magnetograms, the magnetic strength is found to be about 40-70 Gauss (measuring error about 39 Gauss). The magnetic signal indicates the amplitude and orientation of the internal magnetic field in the filament. We discuss several possible causes which may produce such a measured signal. A twisted magnetic configuration inside the filament is suggested .  相似文献

Recent studies of NOAA active region 10953, by Okamoto et al. (Astrophys. J. Lett. 673, 215, 2008; Astrophys. J. 697, 913, 2009), have interpreted photospheric observations of changing widths of the polarities and reversal of the horizontal magnetic field component as signatures of the emergence of a twisted flux tube within the active region and along its internal polarity inversion line (PIL). A filament is observed along the PIL and the active region is assumed to have an arcade structure. To investigate this scenario, MacTaggart and Hood (Astrophys. J. Lett. 716, 219, 2010) constructed a dynamic flux emergence model of a twisted cylinder emerging into an overlying arcade. The photospheric signatures observed by Okamoto et al. (2008, 2009) are present in the model although their underlying physical mechanisms differ. The model also produces two additional signatures that can be verified by the observations. The first is an increase in the unsigned magnetic flux in the photosphere at either side of the PIL. The second is the behaviour of characteristic photospheric flow profiles associated with twisted flux tube emergence. We look for these two signatures in AR 10953 and find negative results for the emergence of a twisted flux tube along the PIL. Instead, we interpret the photospheric behaviour along the PIL to be indicative of photospheric magnetic cancellation driven by flows from the dominant sunspot. Although we argue against flux emergence within this particular region, the work demonstrates the important relationship between theory and observations for the successful discovery and interpretation of signatures of flux emergence.  相似文献

The spatial organization of the observed photospheric magnetic field, as well as its relation to the polarity of the interplanetary field, have been studied using high resolution magnetograms from Kitt Peak National Observatory. Systematic patterns in the large scale field have been found to be due to contributions from both concentrated flux and more diffuse flux. It is not necessary to assume, as has often been done in previous studies, that there is a weak background solar magnetic field causing the large-scale patterns in the photosphere, although the existence of such a field cannot be excluded. The largest scale structures in the photosphere correspond to the expected pattern at the base of a warped heliomagnetic equator. The polarity of the photospheric field, determined on various spatial scales, correlates with the polarity of the interplanetary field, with the most significant correlation due to mid-latitude fields. However, because the interplanetary field is likely to be rooted in concentrated photospheric regions, rather than across an entire polarity region, both the strength and polarity of the field are important in determining the interplanetary field. Thus studies of the interplanetary field which are based on either instrumental or numerical averaging of fields in the solar photosphere are subject to serious inherent limitations.Analyses based on several spatial scales in the photosphere suggest that new flux in the interplanetary medium is often due to relatively small photospheric features which appear in the photosphere up to one month before they are manifest at the Earth. The evolution of the over-all photospheric pattern may be due to individual sub-patterns which have slightly different rotation properties and which alternate in their relative dominance of the interplanetary medium.  相似文献

The coronal magnetic field (CMF) during Carrington rotation 1870 is inferred by using the so-called 'potential model' with the photospheric magnetic field observed at Kitt Peak. Magnetic field lines starting at areas restricted (90deg; ± 30deg; in longitude and 0deg; ± 20deg; in latitude) in both the photosphere and the source surface of 2.5 solar radii are traced to examine fine geometrical structures of the CMF. We found a well-ordered planar magnetic structure (PMS) near 90° Carrington longitude in the corona. The PMS consists of magnetic flux of negative polarity emanating from several small areas in the photosphere. The magnetic flux expands into a wide longitudinal angle in the source surface making a planar magnetic structure.  相似文献

Semiempirical models of the photosphere of an Ellerman bomb in the NOAA 11024 active region were obtained using profiles of Stokes parameters I, Q, U, and V of photospheric lines. Spectropolarimetric observations were conducted using the French–Italian THEMIS telescope (Tenerife, Spain). The SIR inversion code [28] was used in the modeling. The models have two components: a magnetic flux tube and nonmagnetic surroundings. The dependences of temperature, magnetic field strength, inclination of the magnetic field vector, and line-of-sight velocity in the tube on the optical depth were obtained. The models demonstrate that the thermodynamic parameters of the Ellerman bomb photosphere differ considerably from those of the quiet photosphere. The temperature in the tube model varied nonmonotonically with height and deviated by up to 700–900 K from its values for the quiet photosphere. Downflows were observed in the lower and the upper photospheric layers. The line-of-sight velocity in the upper layers of the photosphere was as high as 17 km/s. The magnetic field strength in the models varied from 0.1–0.13 T in the lower photospheric layers to 0.04–0.07 T in the upper ones. The physical state of the photosphere did change in the course of observations.  相似文献

Theoretical model, explaining a phenomenon of formation of Intensive Magnetic Flux Tube (IMFT) in a converging flow of partially ionized solar photospheric plasma is considered. Special attention is paid to the fact of weak ionization (n/n n ∼ 10-4) of plasma in the photosphere. The cases of 2D magnetic slab and cylindric magnetic tube are considered. It was shown that in a converging flow of photospheric plasma thin magnetic tubes, or slabs with the characteristic scale L 0 ∼ (1 ÷ 5) ċ 107 cm and magnetic field 1000 ÷ 2000 G can be generated. By this 2D magnetic slabs could be unstable with respect to an exchange instability and appear as an intermediate step during IMFT formation on the boundary of two supergranulation cells. Formation of compact strong magnetic field structures, and their energy balance are discussed. Stationary Joule energy dissipation taking place on the photospheric levels in the models of magnetic slab or IMFT under consideration increases towards the periphery of these objects and can exceed radiation looses. This can cause the occurrence of magnetic tubes with hot external envelopes, and modification of plasma temperature and density distribution, with respect to ones in a quiet atmosphere. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Solar eruptive phenomena, like flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are governed by magnetic fields. To describe the structure of these phenomena one needs information on the magnetic flux density and the electric current density vector components in three dimensions throughout the atmosphere. However, current spectro-polarimetric measurements typically limit the determination of the vector magnetic field to only the photosphere. Therefore, there is considerable interest in accurate modeling of the solar coronal magnetic field using photospheric vector magnetograms as boundary data. In this work, we model the coronal magnetic field for global solar atmosphere using nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) extrapolation codes implemented to a synoptic maps of photospheric vector magnetic field synthesized from the Vector Spectromagnetograph (VSM) on Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) as boundary condition. Using the resulting three-dimensional magnetic field, we calculate the three-dimensional electric current density and magnetic energy throughout the solar atmosphere for Carrington rotation 2124 using our global extrapolation code. We found that spatially, the low-lying, current-carrying core field demonstrates a strong concentration of free energy in the active-region core, from the photosphere to the lower corona (about 70 Mm). The free energy density appears largely co-spatial with the electric current distribution.  相似文献

The physical state of the photosphere 1 h 50 min before a C1 solar flare on May 24, 2012, was studied. The spectropolarimetric data from the French-Italian THEMIS telescope (Tenerife Island, Spain) were used. The modeling was carried out through the inversion method using SIR [B. Ruiz Cobo and J. C. del Toro Iniesta, Astrophys. J. 398, 375–385 (1992)] code. Height distributions of temperature, magnetic field strength, and line-of-sight velocity were obtained. Nine semiempirical models of the photosphere were constructed. Each model has a two-component (a magnetic field component and nonmagnetic surroundings) structure. According to the obtained models, the magnetic field parameters and thermodynamic parameters did change significantly in the course of observations that lasted for 8 min. The models contain layers with increased and decreased temperature values. The magnetic field strength in these models varied, on average, from 0.2 T (lower photospheric layers) to 0.13 T (upper layers). The line-of-sight velocities did not exceed 2 km/s in lower and middle photospheric layers and rose to 5–6 km/s in the upper layers. The differences in the physical state and its changes occurring at different sites within the active region prior to the flare were revealed.  相似文献

We compare a variety of nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) extrapolation algorithms, including optimization, magneto-frictional, and Grad – Rubin-like codes, applied to a solar-like reference model. The model used to test the algorithms includes realistic photospheric Lorentz forces and a complex field including a weakly twisted, right helical flux bundle. The codes were applied to both forced “photospheric” and more force-free “chromospheric” vector magnetic field boundary data derived from the model. When applied to the chromospheric boundary data, the codes are able to recover the presence of the flux bundle and the field’s free energy, though some details of the field connectivity are lost. When the codes are applied to the forced photospheric boundary data, the reference model field is not well recovered, indicating that the combination of Lorentz forces and small spatial scale structure at the photosphere severely impact the extrapolation of the field. Preprocessing of the forced photospheric boundary does improve the extrapolations considerably for the layers above the chromosphere, but the extrapolations are sensitive to the details of the numerical codes and neither the field connectivity nor the free magnetic energy in the full volume are well recovered. The magnetic virial theorem gives a rapid measure of the total magnetic energy without extrapolation though, like the NLFFF codes, it is sensitive to the Lorentz forces in the coronal volume. Both the magnetic virial theorem and the Wiegelmann extrapolation, when applied to the preprocessed photospheric boundary, give a magnetic energy which is nearly equivalent to the value derived from the chromospheric boundary, but both underestimate the free energy above the photosphere by at least a factor of two. We discuss the interpretation of the preprocessed field in this context. When applying the NLFFF codes to solar data, the problems associated with Lorentz forces present in the low solar atmosphere must be recognized: the various codes will not necessarily converge to the correct, or even the same, solution. On 07/07/2007, the NLFFF team was saddened by the news that Tom Metcalf had died as the result of an accident. We remain grateful for having had the opportunity to benefit from his unwavering dedication to the problems encountered in attempting to understand the Sun’s magnetic field; Tom had completed this paper several months before his death, leading the team through the many steps described above.  相似文献

Magnetic reconnection in the temperature minimum region of the solar photosphere can account for the canceling magnetic features on the Sun. Litvinenko (1999a) showed that a reconnection model explains the quiet-Sun features with the magnetic flux cancelation rate of order 1017 Mx hr−1. In this paper the model is applied to cancelation in solar active regions, which is characterized by a much larger rate of cancelation ∖ ge1019 Mx hr−1. In particular, the evolution of a photospheric canceling feature observed in an active region on July 2, 1994 is studied. The theoretical predictions are demonstrated to be in reasonable agreement with the measured speed of approaching magnetic fragments, the magnetic field in the fragments, and the flux cancelation rate, deduced from the combined Big Bear Hα time-lapse images and videomagnetograms calibrated against the daily NSO/Kitt Peak magnetogram. Of particular interest is the prediction that photospheric reconnection should lead to a significant upward mass flux and the formation of a solar filament. Hα observations indeed showed a filament that had one of its ends spatially superposed with the canceling feature. It has been demonstrated in the past that single, two-dimensional coronal arcades are very unlikely driven unstable by a simple shear of the photospheric footpoints of the magnetic field lines. By means of two-dimensional, time-dependent MHD simulations, we present evidence that a resistive instability can result if in addition to the footpoint shear a slow motion of the footpoints towards the photospheric neutral line is included. Unlike the model recently proposed by van Ballegooijen and Martens (1989), the photospheric footpoint velocity in our model is nonsingular and the shear dominates everywhere. Starting from a planar potential field geometry for the arcade, we find that after some time a current sheet is formed which is unstable with respect to the tearing instability. The time of its onset scales with the logarithm of the magnetic diffusivity assumed in our calculation. In its nonlinear phase, a quasi-stationary situation arises in the vicinity of the x-line with an almost constant reconnection rate. The height of the x-line above the photosphere and the distance of the separatrix footpoints remain almost constant in this phase, while the helical flux tube, formed above the neutral line, continuously grows in size.  相似文献

Knowledge regarding the coronal magnetic field is important for the understanding of many phenomena, like flares and coronal mass ejections. Because of the low plasma beta in the solar corona, the coronal magnetic field is often assumed to be force-free and we use photospheric vector magnetograph data to extrapolate the magnetic field into the corona with the help of a nonlinear force-free optimization code. Unfortunately, the measurements of the photospheric magnetic field contain inconsistencies and noise. In particular, the transversal components (say B x and B y) of current vector magnetographs have their uncertainties. Furthermore, the magnetic field in the photosphere is not necessarily force free and often not consistent with the assumption of a force-free field above the magnetogram. We develop a preprocessing procedure to drive the observed non–force-free data towards suitable boundary conditions for a force-free extrapolation. As a result, we get a data set which is as close as possible to the measured data and consistent with the force-free assumption.  相似文献

The flare-related, persistent and abrupt changes in the photospheric magnetic field have been reported by many authors during recent years. These bewildering observational results pose a challenge to the current flare theories in which the photospheric magnetic field usually remains unchanged in the eruption. In this paper, changes in the photosphere magnetic field during the solar eruption are investigated based on the catastrophe model. The results indicate that the projection effect is an important source that yields the change in the observed photospheric magnetic field in the line-of-sight. Furthermore one may observe the change in the normal component of magnetic field if the spectrum line used to measure the photospheric magnetic field does not exactly come from the photospheric surface. Our results also show that the significance of selecting the correct spectral lines to study the photospheric field becomes more apparent for the magnetic configurations with complex boundary condition (or background field).  相似文献

The source of coronal magnetic energy and helicity lies below the surface of the Sun, probably in the convective zone dynamo. Measurements of magnetic and velocity fields can capture the fluxes of both magnetic energy and helicity crossing the photosphere. We point out the ambiguities which can occur when observations are used to compute these fluxes. In particular, we show that these fluxes should be computed only from the horizontal motions deduced by tracking the photospheric cut of magnetic flux tubes. These horizontal motions include the effect of both the emergence and the shearing motions whatever the magnetic configuration complexity is. We finally analyze the observational difficulties involved in deriving such fluxes, in particular the limitations of the correlation tracking methods.  相似文献
