Based on the spectropolarimetric data obtained at the 6-m telescope, a study of the magnetic field and physical parameters of the magnetic He-weak star HD 35298 was performed. A comparison of the results of magnetic field measurements by various methods has been carried out. The star’s magnetic field varies in the range from ?3 to +3 kG. The field geometry is explained in terms of the oblique rotator model. The obtained magnetic field variation curve can be described by a central dipole with the dipole axis inclined to the axis of rotation by β = 60°, and the magnetic field strength at the pole of B p = 11.5 kG. The data on the variability of spectral lines of some metals are presented, allowing to make an assumption that the stellar surface is heavily spotted.  相似文献

Nonradial oscillations of a partially degenerate standard model, approximating a class of low-mass stars, have been studied in the presence of a weak poloidal magnetic field. The magnetic field in the interior of the configuration is taken to be continuous across the equilibrium surface and is matched with an external dipole field. Using a variational formulation, corrections to the oscillation frequencies of the Kelvin mode have been found for different values of the central degeneracy. It has been noted that the effect of the magnetic field is to increase the frequency of nonradial (l=2) mode of pulsation.  相似文献

A model is constructed for the magnetic field of the He-weak CP star HD 21699. This star has the field structure of a dipole displaced by 0.4 radii from the center perpendicular to its axis. The magnetic poles appear to be close to one another on the surface; they are separated by 55°, not by 180° as in the case of a central dipole. The phase dependences of the equivalent widths of He and Si lines have extrema at the phases corresponding to passage through the visible meridian of zero magnetic field between the magnetic poles. At the magnetic poles, the intensity of the helium lines is maximal and of the silicon lines, minimal. The silicon abundance is maximal in the regions where the magnetic field is predominantly tangential to the star’s surface. Because of averaging over the visible hemisphere and owing to the closeness of the magnetic poles, only one wave of variation in the intensity of the spectral lines of these chemical elements, one wave of photometric variability, and an average surface magnetic field Bs are observed. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 3, pp. 441–451 (August 2007).  相似文献

A laboratory experiment is designed to study the interaction of the solar wind with the geomagnetic field. Time-exposure and time-resolved photographs are taken when plasma hits a model Earth, and direct measurements are made of the magnetic field change, plasma density and electric current distribution. The shape of the magnetic cavity formed on the upstream side of the model Earth is almost the same as that calculated for the geomagnetic cavity. The charged particles, which penetrate the magnetic cavity formed on the upstream side of the model Earth with east-west asymmetry from the neutral points on the cavity surface, appear to concentrate towards the equator on the rear side of the model, forming a westward electric current belt within the magnetosphere. When the dipole axis is not perpendicular to the plasma gun—magnetic dipole line, the invasion of plasma is more pronounced at the cusp of the cavity nearer to the gun. Charged particles appear to penetrate to a greater extent if a uniform external magnetic field is applied parallel to the magnetic dipole than if one is applied antiparallel.  相似文献

Using a perturbated (noised) dipole model of a sunspot magnetic field structure we simulated the influence of background noise or apparent noise (unresolved small-scale magnetic field structure) on sunspot magnetic field parameters. We evaluated mean values of the vertical and horizontal electric current densities |j| and |j|, respectively, of the force-free parameter α and of the Lorentz force |F|. For comparison we estimated |j| and |F| of a standard sunspot magnetic field model (return-flux model, OSHEROVICH 1982). Furthermore, we compared our results with those from observations resulting in estimated values of |j| for quiet sunspots. Our investigation led to the following results: the estimated values of 〈|F|〉 show clearly that due to the noise the axisymmetric magnetic dipole model is clustered into several subsystems of fluxbundles. The latter are connected with a system of electric current densities of the order of |j| ∼ 10−3 Am−2 and |j| = 10−1 Am−2, i.e., this system is a noise-generated nonaxisymmetric magnetohydrostatic model.  相似文献

A generalization of the perturbation method is applied to the problem of the radial and the non-radial oscillations of a gaseous star which is distorted by a magnetic field. An expression is derived for the perturbation of the oscillation frequencies due to the presence of a weak magnetic field when the equilibrium configuration is a spheroid. The particular application to the homogeneous model with a purely poloidal field inside, due to a current distribution proportional to the distance from the axis of symmetry, and a dipole type field outside is considered in detail. The main result is that the magnetic field has a large and almost stabilizing effect on unstableg-modes, particularly on higher order modes. With the considered magnetic field the surface layers appear to have a large weight.  相似文献

The evolution of the background magnetic field with the solar cycle has been studied using the dipole-quadrupole magnetic energy behaviour in a cycle. The combined energy of the axisymmetric dipole, non-axisymmetric quadrupole, and equatorial dipole is relatively lowly variable over the solar cycle. The dipole field changed sign when the quadrupole field was near a maximum, andvice versa. A conceptual picture involving four meridional magnetic polarity sectors proposed to explain these features may be in agreement with equatorial coronal hole observations. The rate of sector rotation is estimated to be 8 heliographic degrees per year faster than the Carrington rotation (P = 27.23d synodic). Polarity boundaries of sectors located 180° apart show meridional migrations in one direction, while the boundaries of the other two sectors move in the opposite direction. A simple model of how the magnetic field energy varies, subject to specifying reasonable initial photospheric magnetic and velocity field patterns, follows the observed evolution of the dipole and quadrupole field energies quite nicely.  相似文献

A preliminary model of the internal magnetic field of the Moon is developed using a novel, correlative technique on the low-altitude Lunar Prospector magnetic field observations. Subsequent to the removal of a simple model of the external field, an internal dipole model is developed for each pole-to-pole half-orbit. This internal dipole model exploits Lunar Prospector's orbit geometry and incorporates radial and theta vector component data from immediately adjacent passes into the model. These adjacent passes are closely separated in space and time and are thus characteristic of a particular lunar regime (wake, solar wind, magnetotail, magnetosheath) or regimes. Each dipole model thus represents the correlative parts of three adjacent passes, and provides an analytic means of continuing the data to a constant surface of 30 km above the mean lunar radius. The altitude-normalized radial field from the wake and tail regimes is used to build a model in which 99.2% of the 360 by 360 bins covering the lunar surface are filled. This global model of the radial magnetic field is used to construct a degree 178 spherical harmonic model of the field via the Driscoll and Healy sampling theorem. Terms below about degree 150 are robust, and polar regions are considered to be the least reliable. The model resolves additional detail in the low magnetic field regions of the Imbrium and Orientale basins, and also in the four anomaly clusters antipodal to the large lunar basins. The model will be of use in understanding the sources of the internal field, and as a first step in modeling the interaction of the internal field with the solar wind.  相似文献

We model the magnetic fields of four magnetic stars using published longitudinal (Be) field measurements. The structure of the magnetic field of each of the four stars is close to that of the central dipole. Unfortunately, the number of measurements for each star is insufficient for accurate finding of the field parameters, and therefore we find no dipole shift exceeding its error Δa ≈ 0.1, expressed as a fraction of the stellar radius. Our data support the opinion that the results of modeling depend most strongly on the adopted inclination of the star’s rotation axis i.  相似文献

A magnetospheric field model is presented in which the usually assumed toroidal ring current is replaced by a circular disk current of finite thickness that extends from the tail to geocentric distances less than 3R E. The drastic departure of this model from the concept of the conventional ring current lies in that the current is continuous from the tail to the inner magnetosphere. This conceptual change was required to account for the recent results of analysis of the OGO 3 and 5 magnetic field observations. In the present model the cross-tail current flows along circular arcs concentric with the Earth and completes circuit via surface currents on the magnetopause. Apart from these return currents in the tail magnetopause, Mead's (1964) model is used for the field from the magnetopause current. The difference scalar field, ΔB, defined as the difference between the scalar field calculated from the present model and the magnitude of the dipole field is found to be in gross agreement with the observed ΔB (i.e. the observed scalar field minus a scalar reference geomagnetic field). An updated version of the ΔB contours from the OGO 3 and 5 observations, which is used for the comparison, is presented in this paper. Significant differences in details exist, however, between the model and the observed results. These differences will provide a guide for making modifications in the equatorial current system in future models.  相似文献

The magnetic field in an axisymmetric pore is current free and can be represented by a flux tube with a magnetic potential of the formAJ 0(kr)e -kz. For a given magnetic flux the field in this pore model is uniquely defined if the magnetic pressure balances the gas pressure at two levels. For models with fluxes of 0.5–3.0 × 1020 mx the surface radius varies from 1100–2700 km (diameters of 3–8 arc-sec) and the Wilson depression is estimated at 200 km. As the flux increases, the field becomes nearly horizontal at the edge of the pore and eventually a penumbra is formed. The distinction between pores and sunspots is investigated; the critical flux is about 1020 Mx, corresponding to a radius of 1500 km.Visitor, as a member of the High Altitude Observatory Solar Project, at Sacramento Peak Observatory, Sunspot, N.M., U.S.A.  相似文献

The cold, core plasma mass density in the Earth's magnetosphere may be deduced from the resonant behaviour of ultra-low frequency (ULF; 1–100 mHz), magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. Ground-based magnetometers are the most widely used instruments for recording the signature of ULF wave activity in the magnetosphere. For a suitable model of the background magnetic field and a functional form for the variation of the proton number density with radial distance, the resonant frequencies of ULF waves provide estimates of the equatorial plasma mass density. At high latitudes, the magnetic field model becomes critical when estimating the plasma mass density from FLR data. We show that a dipole field model is generally inadequate for latitudes greater than ∼65° geomagnetic compared with models that are keyed to magnetic activity, interplanetary magnetic field and solar wind properties. Furthermore, the method often relies on the detection of the fundamental ULF resonance, which changes frequency depending on the polarisation of the oscillation. Using idealised toroidal and poloidal oscillation modes, the range of the derived densities as the ULF wave polarisation changes is of the same order as changing the density function from a constant value throughout the magnetosphere to assuming constant Alfven speed in a dipole geometry.  相似文献

A magnetic field model is constructed for the extremely slow rotator γEqu based on measurements of its magnetic field over many years and using the “magnetic charge” method. An analysis of γEqu and of all the data accumulated up to the present on the magnetic field parameters of chemically peculiar stars leads to some interesting conclusions, of which the main ones are: the fact that the axis of rotation and the dipole axis are not parallel in γEqu and the other slowly rotating magnetic stars which we have studied previously is one of the signs that the braking of CP stars does not involve the participation of the magnetic field as they evolve “to the main sequence.” The axes of the magnetic field dipole in slow rotators are oriented arbitrarily with respect to their axes of rotation. The substantial photometric activity of these CP stars also argues against these axes being close. The well-known absence of sufficiently strong magnetic fields in the Ae/Be Herbig stars also presents difficulties for the hypothesis of “magnetic braking” in the “pre-main sequence” stages of evolution. The inverse relation between the average surface magnetic field Bs and the rotation period P is yet another fact in conflict with the idea that the magnetic field is involved in the braking of CP stars. We believe that angular momentum loss involving the magnetic field can hardly have taken place during evolution immediately prior “to the main sequence,” rather the slow rotation of CP stars most likely originates from protostellar clouds with low angular momentum. Some of the slowly rotating stars have a central dipole magnetic field configuration, while others have a displaced dipole configuration, where the displacement can be toward the positive or the negative magnetic pole. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 2, pp. 251–262 (May 2006).  相似文献

The oscillations of a polytrope with infinite electric conductivity containing a weak internal poloidal magnetic field which is continuous with an external dipole field are examined with the aid of a variational equation. The corrections to the fundamental characteristic frequencies of the radial and non-radiall=2 pulsation modes are calculated. The magnetic field removes a degeneracy which occurs between these two modes and the resulting frequency splitting is evaluated. The relevance of the results to the known magnetic stars is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The currents on the precisely calculated magnetosphere surface previously reported have been integrated with the same accuracy as used in the surface calculation to give the magnetic field at 688 points within the magnetosphere for each of eight surfaces for the tilt of the Earth's dipole in steps of 5° between 0° and 35°. The magnetic fields have then been used to fit the coefficients of a 35 term spherical harmonic expansion of the scalar magnetic potential representing the field by the method of least squares fit. The coefficients for each of the eight surfaces were then represented as a power series in dipole tilt angle, λ so that the complete field can be given very conveniently for any λ. For λ = 0, the first two coefficients g10 and g21 are the dominant terms and the azimuthally dependent term g21 is 30 per cent less than that calculated by Mead and Midgley from older less accurate surface and field calculations.  相似文献

The large-scale photospheric magnetic field, measured by the Mt. Wilson magnetograph, has been analyzed in terms of surface harmonics (P n m )()cosm and P n m ()sinm) for the years 1959 through 1972. Our results are as follows. The single harmonic which most often characterized the general solar magnetic field throughout the period of observation corresponds to a dipole lying in the plane of the equator (2 sectors, n = m = 1). This 2-sector harmonic was particularly dominant during the active years of solar cycles 19 and 20. The north-south dipole harmonic (n = 1, m = 0) was prominent only during quiet years and was relatively insignificant during the active years. (The derived north-south dipole includes magnetic fields from the entire solar surface and does not necessarily correlate with either the dipole-like appearance of the polar regions of the Sun or with the weak polar magnetic fields.) The 4-sector structure (n = m = 2) was prominent, and often dominant, at various times throughout the cycle. A 6-sector structure (n = m = 3) occasionally became dominant for very brief periods during the active years. Contributions to the general solar magnetic field from harmonics of principal index 4 n 9 were generally relatively small throughout this entire solar cycle with one outstanding exception. For a period of several months prior to the large August 1972 flares, the global photospheric field was dominated by an n = 5 harmonic; this harmonic returned to a low value shortly after the August 1972 flare events. Rapid changes in the global harmonics, in particular, relative and absolute changes in the contributions of harmonics of different principal index n to the global field, imply that the global solar field is not very deep or that very strong fluid flows connect the photosphere with deeper layers. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

A two-dimensional potential energy surface of an H 2 + molecular ion is calculated for the case of the strong magnetic field of the neutron starB=1011–1013 G. It is shown that the dependence of the potential energy from the angle between the magnetic field direction and the internuclear axis becomes very sharp as the magnetic field increases. The obtained potential energy surfaces can be used for studying the vibrational-rotational structure of the H 2 + spectrum in a strong magnetic field and the development of the observational methods for the determination of the magnetic field of a neutron star.  相似文献

The “paraboloid” model of Mercury’s magnetospheric magnetic field is used to determine the best-fit magnetospheric current system and internal dipole parameters from magnetic field measurements taken during the first and second MESSENGER flybys of Mercury on 14 January and 6 October 2008. Together with magnetic field measurements taken during the Mariner 10 flybys on 29 March 1974 and 16 March 1975, there exist three low-latitude traversals separated in longitude and one high-latitude encounter. From our model formulation and fitting procedure a Mercury dipole moment of 196 nT ·  (where RM is Mercury’s radius) was determined. The dipole is offset from Mercury’s center by 405 km in the northward direction. The dipole inclination to Mercury’s rotation axis is relatively small, ∼4°, with an eastern longitude of 193° for the dipole northern pole. Our model is based on the a priori assumption that the dipole position and the moment orientation and strength do not change in time. The root mean square (rms) deviation between the Mariner 10 and MESSENGER magnetic field measurements and the predictions of our model for all four flybys is 10.7 nT. For each magnetic field component the rms residual is ∼6 nT or about 1.5% of the maximum measured magnetic field, ∼400 nT. This level of agreement is possible only because the magnetospheric current system parameters have been determined separately for each flyby. The magnetospheric stand-off distance, the distance from the planet’s center to the inner edge of the tail current sheet, the tail lobe magnetic flux, and the displacement of the tail current sheet relative to the Mercury solar-magnetospheric equatorial plane have been determined independently for each flyby. The magnetic flux in the tail lobes varied from 3.8 to 5.9 MWb; the subsolar magnetopause stand-off distance from 1.28 to 1.43 RM; and the distance to the inner edge of the current sheet from 1.23 to 1.32 RM. The differences in the current systems between the first and second MESSENGER flybys are attributed to the effects of strong magnetic reconnection driven by southward interplanetary magnetic field during the latter flyby.  相似文献

The MESSENGER mission to Mercury, to be launched in 2004, will provide an opportunity to characterize Mercury's internal magnetic field during an orbital phase lasting one Earth year. To test the ability to determine the planetary dipole and higher-order moments from measurements by the spacecraft's fluxgate magnetometer, we simulate the observations along the spacecraft trajectory and recover the internal field characteristics from the simulated observations. The magnetic field inside Mercury's magnetosphere is assumed to consist of an intrinsic multipole component and an external contribution due to magnetospheric current systems described by a modified Tsyganenko 96 model. Under the axis-centered-dipole approximation without correction for the external field the moment strength is overestimated by ∼4% for a simulated dipole moment of , and the error depends strongly on the magnitude of the simulated moment, rising as the moment decreases. Correcting for the external field contributions can reduce the error in the dipole term to a lower limit of ∼1-2% without a solar wind monitor. Dipole and quadrupole terms, although highly correlated, are then distinguishable at the level equivalent to an error in the position of an offset dipole of a few tens of kilometers. Knowledge of the external magnetic field is therefore the primary limiting factor in extracting reliable knowledge of the structure of Mercury's magnetic field from the MESSENGER observations.  相似文献

In this paper we evaluate the possibility of detecting, for the first time, the surface magnetic field of Jupiter (∼1 bar level) by observing the change of linear polarization induced by the Hanle effect on the H Lyman-alpha (Lyα) emission line of the planet. We find that, indeed, the Hanle effect, which results from the interaction between a local magnetic field and the atomic polarization induced by absorption of anisotropic radiation, is sensitive to relatively weak values of the strength of the magnetic fields expected on planets. First, we show that for the Lyα emission backscattered by atomic H in the presence of a magnetic field, the Hanle effect is polarizing. This new result is in total contrast to the depolarizing effect predicted and observed for emission lines scattered at right angles in solar prominences. Additionally, to estimate the polarization rate for the case of Jupiter, we have considered three magnetic field models: a dipole field for reference, an O4 based model [Connerney, J.E.P., 1981. The magnetic field of Jupiter—A generalized inverse approach. J. Geophys. Res. 86, 7679-7693], and finally, an O6 based model [Khurana, K.K., 1997. Euler potential models of Jupiter's magnetospheric field. J. Geophys. Res. 102, 11295-11306]. In all models, we show that for the jovian backscattered Lyα line, the Hanle effect does enhance the Lyα linear polarization; the polarization rate may exceed 2% at specific regions of the jovian disc, making detection possible either remotely or from an orbiter around Jupiter. In general, depending on the instrumental sensitivity and the observing strategy used, we show that accurate mapping of the linear polarization rate at the planetary surface (thermosphere) or off-disc (corona) may provide a rather accurate estimate of the jovian total magnetic field strength on large area scales.  相似文献
