Humans think and communicate in very flexible and schematic ways, and a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) for the Amazon and associated information system ontologies should reflect this flexibility and the adaptive nature of human cognition in order to achieve semantic interoperability. In this paper I offer a conceptual investigation of SDI and explore the nature of cultural schemas as expressions of indigenous ontologies and the challenges of semantic interoperability across cultures. Cultural schemas are, in essence, our ontologies, but they are markedly different than classical formal ontologies. They shape our ontological commitments to what exists in the world as well as the ways in which we approach and engage the world. And while they help structure our understanding of the world in which we are embedded, they are associative and flexible. They help to focus our attention to particular details of our experiences and give them salience, yet they cannot be simply reduced to a series of extracted features. They allow us to make meaning of the contextualized, cultural experience in which we are always immersed. An SDI is a shared social-technological-informational structure that, if it is to be useful and successful for sustainability in the Amazon, must incorporate and use indigenous cultural schemas. Indigenous communities must have the ability to contribute to the collection of geospatial data and their contributions recognized as legitimate forms of knowledge. In order for the SDI to work, it must recognize the larger cultural landscape to which cultural schemas can connect to the ready-to-hand elements of salient cultural experiences.  相似文献

The Croats were among the first peoples of Europe who established a state, and from the beginning of the tenth century they had their own kingdom, the first among the Slav peoples. By their language they belong to the Indo-European Slavic, or more precisely the South Slavic group of peoples, and by their cultural and religious orientation they belong to the Western European sphere of civilization. They settled their present homeland at the beginning of the seventh century. Their formation as a distinct ethnicity began in the early Middle Ages, and this on territory which was for centuries the meeting place of Greek and Roman culture, the Frankish and Byzantine Empires, and the Holy Roman (German) and Ottoman Empires. Here the world's three greatest religions also met: Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Islam. The Croats are Catholics and have always gravitated to the West. As one of the six republics of the former Yugoslavia, Croatia was on the border between the Western democratic countries and the Eastern communist world, between the countries gathered in NATO and those in the Warsaw Pact. Since becoming an independent and democratic state in 1991, the Republic of Croatia has been on the eastern border of Central Europe.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to consider the Columbus’ enterprise from the point of view of the evolution of the involvement of society in the marine environment. Recently Columbus has been regarded as a protagonist of the Renaissance because he was able to produce interaction between the willingness to discover new geographical frontiers, the use of knowledge for developing political strategies, the search for riches, the conquest of extra-Mediterranean and extra-European areas. This approach sustained both the palaeo- and neo-industrial stages in which the ocean environment as a whole was involved in conquest-oriented and resource-use strategies. Both Enlightenment and Positivism were the natural prolongation of Columbus’ approaches and those of the Renaissance. Changes occurred in the seventies: (i) the general system-based approach, jointly with the growing attention to the ocean ecosystem, have led to approaches in which sea uses and the natural context are regarded as interacting systems; (ii) in particular, the ocean ecosystem has been increasingly regarded in a no deterministic way; (iii) United Nations’ policy has encouraged policies based on the duoenvironment anddevelopment. As a final result, in terms of cultural values, the post-Columbus era has initiated just as the quincentenary of his enterprise is being celebrated.  相似文献

Cellular automata are simple mathematical idealizations of natural systems and they supply useful models for many investigations in natural science. Examples include sandpile models, forest fire models, and slider block models used in seismology. In the present paper, they have been used for establishing temporal relations between the energy releases of the seismic events that occurred in neighboring parts of the crust. The catalogue is divided into time intervals, and the region is divided into cells which are declared active or inactive by means of a threshold energy release criterion. Thus, a pattern of active and inactive cells which evolves over time is determined. A stochastic cellular automaton is constructed starting with these patterns, in order to simulate their spatio-temporal evolution, by supposing a Moore's neighborhood interaction between the cells. The best model is chosen by maximizing the mutual information between the past and the future states. Finally, a Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Map is given for the different energy releases considered. The method has been applied to the Greece catalogue from 1900 to 1999. The Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Maps for energies corresponding to m = 4 and m = 5 are close to the real seismicity after the data in that area, and they correspond to a background seismicity in the whole area. This background seismicity seems to cover the whole area in periods of around 25–50 years. The optimum cell size is in agreement with other studies; for m > 6 the optimum area increases according to the threshold of clear spatial resolution, and the active cells are not so clustered. The results are coherent with other hazard studies in the zone and with the seismicity recorded after the data set, as well as provide an interaction model which points out the large scale nature of the earthquake occurrence.  相似文献

Recently a few Japanese geographers became aware that the concept of nature in modern geography differs from that of traditional Japanese thought. As modern geography in Japan was formed by the influence of European geography, most academic geographers in Japan have followed the occidental view that proposed an opposition between cultural and natural landscapes and that, due to the belief in man's power, sees the former as superior to the latter. From an economic view point, in fact, the European concept of nature which is opposed to culture has contributed to land exploitation that caused the destruction of Japan's natural landscape.The time has come to consider the traditional Japanese idea of nature as Kami (gods) in comparison with the binary opposition of nature/culture which derives from modern rationalism. Kami who represent elements of nature belonged to a Pantheon in ancient Japan. Some examples of the Kami's names and their English explanations are as follows: Amaterasuomikami (godess of sun), Oyamatsumi-no-kami (god of the mountain's spirit), Nozuchi-no-kami (god of the field's spirit). In ancient Japan people believed that natural landscapes were created and inhabited by these Kami, and that the will of these Kami controlled the cultural domain. However, people provided shrines for Kami to placate their reckless domination. In this context, culture is in the hands of nature. This idea of nature's superiority to culture can explain the Japanese geographical concept of landscape.  相似文献

Clay minerals and clayey soils have been extensively researched over the last century leading to a rich and still evolving corpus of knowledge on clay chemistry, microstructure and macroscopic behaviour. Clay has the ability, under certain conditions, to spontaneously repair its cracks. However, despite ample evidence, clay self-repair remains understudied and under-theorised. For example, the majority of experimental studies discussing clay self-repair infer its existence from changes to macroscopic properties assumed to be caused by self-repair, and only a small number of studies have attempted to observe self-repair directly. This paper reviews the literature on clay self-repair. First, it situates clay self-repair within the broader context of self-repairing material. Next, autogenous self-repair of clay, under wet-dry cycles, freeze–thaw cycles and deep-ground consolidation, is presented focusing on evidence, driving mechanisms and key variables of influence. Next, theories of clay self-repair proposed in the literature are discussed, highlighting their scope and limitations, as well as the extent to which they have been validated by experimental observations. Key gaps in current knowledge of clay self-repair are highlighted and ways in which they can be addressed in future research are proposed. Finally, a nomenclature distinguishing between different kinds of clay self-repair is proposed based on eight different attributes.

We show that, as previously described, there are conflicts between areas used by people and shorebirds. However, we propose that burrowing organisms add complexity to the shorebird–human interaction that should be taken into account for management and conservation. This is because SW Atlantic mudflats are dominated by high densities (up to 60 crabs m−2) of a strong bioturbator, the burrowing crab Neohelice granulata (=Chasmagnathus granulatus). These crabs affect the habitat use and foraging performance of shorebird species. The two-banded plover Charadrius falklandicus feed more in burrow areas whereas the yellowlegs Tringa spp. and the white-rumped sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis tend to avoid burrow areas. We evaluated the effect of human recreational activities on shorebirds, taking into account shorebird–crab interaction, during shorebird migratory periods (November to April) of 2001, 2002, and 2003. This study was performed at the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (37° 40′ S, Argentina). Results showed that people only rarely used the extensive soft bottom intertidals dominated by burrowing assemblages of N. granulata because the soft sediments make walking difficult. Therefore, human impact is reduced for the two-banded plover. However, for several migratory shorebirds that also avoid burrow areas, these areas act as suboptimal alternative areas when human impact is important in their preferred habitats. When human activity is low, shorebirds remain foraging in the area but they decrease their feeding intakes. The extensions of burrow areas differ among estuaries and are likely to generate between-estuaries differences as stopover sites for shorebirds. Also, other species that form large burrowing assemblages can have a similar impact on shorebird–human interactions.  相似文献

Solution lineations in conglomerates, resulting from indentation of non-soluble grains of the matrix into the surface of soluble pebbles, make up a morphological and genetic continuum with gradual transition between orthogonal stylolites, oblique slickolites and parallel striations. The distributions of incidence angles of matrix grains have been analyzed in individual pebbles in order to discern their kinematical or dynamical meaning. As a general rule, they fit theoretical models of flow trajectories determined by the bulk strain (kinematical hypothesis). In contrast, they are not consistent with dynamical hypotheses based upon relationships with stress vectors. In particular, they do not fit the model of frictional sliding, which would give rise to a sharp discontinuity between slickolites parallel to the maximum principal stress σ1 and true striations parallel to the resolved shear stress τ. Therefore, solution lineations all around a pebble cannot be considered as an analogue of multiple fault slip data, and they should not be generally analysed by methods of stress inversion based upon Bott's principle. Under certain conditions (high pebble solubility; active pressure-solution processes able to accommodate the strain rate; earlier cementation), the solution lineations tend to be parallel to each other and to the maximum shortening/compression axis. They therefore assume a double kinematical and dynanical meaning, and the deformation involves maximum volume reduction.  相似文献

We conclude the editorial by glancing ahead to the individual papers. This overview seeks only to highlight motifs, themes, arcs and trajectories (since the papers will obviously exceed anything we might say about them).John Wylie's paper, An essay on ascending Glastonbury Tor, draws upon the work of Merleau Ponty and Heidegger to illustrate how the act of visualizing itself is always a making of seer and seen. The paper thus seeks to speak of a subjectivity produced and performed via practices of ascension and elevation, and, in doing so, to move towards a new understanding of visible landscape in terms of sensuous practices. Cataloguing his own ascent of Glastonbury Tor, Wylie seeks to enact the Tor for the reader, engendering its visibility, its cultural histories, and thus its sensuous reality through his narrative.Motifs of landscape and practice recur in Mitch Rose's paper, Landscape and Labyrinths, which seeks to sketch out a conceptual and methodological approach to cultural landscape beyond the structuralism of cultural geography, which, Rose argues, skewers landscape through stabilisations of meaning. An ontology of overdetermination and surplus, as elaborated by Althusser and Bataille, is offered by Rose as a possible means of becoming attentive to the excessiveness of landscape.Derek McCormack's A paper with an interest in rhythm moves from the false problematic of representing movement to become an exposition of movement within the folds of writing. In a virtuosic exploration of rhythm McCormack produces an animated space that moves, folds and achieves consistency via both non-subjectifying and subjectifying forces. Theoretical considerations are not side-stepped by this performance; rather, the particular rhythms of Deleuze, Guattari and Lefebvre are engaged and enfolded by the paper.Paul Harrison's paper The Caesura: Remarks on Wittgenstein's interruption of theory, or, why practices elude explanation, presents a precise and exacting philosophical exposition of the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Harrison uses the work of Wittgenstein to offer a diagnosis of idealism within much contemporary social analysis. Linking up with the special issue's concerns, Harrison suggests that it is the performative which occupies the space vacated by Idealism; a replacement of the Cartesian Ideals of certainty for 'infinitive', and distinctly geographic, understandings––taking -place, making -sense––which speak of the time of the present, not of all Time.  相似文献

The interaction between continential ice sheets and the planetary radiation budget is potentially important in climate-sensitivity studies. A simple ice-sheet model incorporated in an energybalance climate model provides a tool for studying this interaction in a quantitative way. Experiments in which the ice-sheet model is coupled step by step to the climate model show that ice sheets hardly affect the zonal mean radiation balance because the albedo feedback due to sea ice and snow cover is dominating. The model requires a 5% drop in the solar constant to create ice sheets of ice-age size.If the feedback between surface elevation and ice-mass balance is included (in a very crude way), the ice-sheet size (L, measured southward from 70°N) becomes much more sensitive to in insolation. For a range of normalized solar constants, roughly from 0.98 to 1.02, two stable solutions exist: L 0 and L 2000 km. This result demonstrates that the response of ice sheets to insolation variations is far from linear. It also stresses the need for explicit modeling of the ice-mass balance of ice sheets, particularly its dependence on surface elevation.  相似文献

In the northern limb of the 2.06-Ga Bushveld Complex, the Platreef is a platinum group elements (PGE)-, Cu-, and Ni-mineralized zone of pyroxenite that developed at the intrusion margin. From north to south, the footwall rocks of the Platreef change from Archaean granite to dolomite, hornfels, and quartzite. Where the footwall is granite, the Sr-isotope system is more strongly perturbed than where the footwall is Sr-poor dolomite, in which samples show an approximate isochron relationship. The Nd-isotope system for samples of pyroxenite and hanging wall norite shows an approximate isochron relationship with an implied age of 2.17 ± 0.2 Ga and initial Nd-isotope ratio of 0.5095. Assuming an age of 2.06 Ga, the ɛNd values range from −6.2 to −9.6 (ave. −7.8, n = 17) and on average are slightly more negative than the Main Zone of the Bushveld. These data are consistent with local contamination of an already contaminated magma of Main Zone composition. The similarity in isotope composition between the Platreef pyroxenites and the hanging wall norites suggests a common origin. Where the country rock is dolomite, the Platreef has generally higher plagioclase and pyroxene δ 18O values, and this indicates assimilation of the immediate footwall. Throughout the Platreef, there is considerable petrographic evidence for sub-solidus interaction with fluids, and the Δ plagioclase–pyroxene values range from −2 to +6, which indicates interaction at both high and low temperatures. Whole-rock and mineral δD values suggest that the Platreef interacted with both magmatic and meteoric water, and the lack of disturbance to the Sr-isotope system suggests that fluid–rock interaction took place soon after emplacement. Where the footwall is granite, less negative δD values suggest a greater involvement of meteoric water. Consistently higher values of Δ plagioclase–pyroxene in the Platreef pyroxenites and hanging wall norites in contact with dolomite suggest prolonged interaction with CO2-rich fluid derived from decarbonation of the footwall rocks. The overprint of post crystallization fluid–rock interaction is the probable cause of the previously documented lack of correlation between PGE and sulfide content on the small scale. The Platreef in contact with dolomite is the focus of the highest PGE grades, and this suggests that dolomite contamination played a role in PGE concentration and deposition, but the exact link remains obscure. It is a possibility that the CO2 produced by decarbonation of assimilated dolomite enhanced the process of PGE scavenging by sulfide precipitation.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to show how fascist imperialist discourses were articulated in a new urban space, just on the outskirts of Rome, and how they affected its design, use and representation. This new city, which should have been the spatial expression of the regime's political, cultural and economical achievements, since its beginning was conceived almost as a mirror image of classical Rome. As her fascist alter-ego, it was imagined as the modern realisation of the ancient dream of reconnecting Rome to the Mediterranean, of bringing Rome to the sea and the sea to Rome, as Mussolini used to say. This was a city that had to represent a strong political desire and ended up as an image of mere representation, a city that was founded to contain a world exhibition and became in itself merely an exhibit. Here I am interested not only in the story the EUR (Esposizione Universale di Roma) buildings tell, but also in what they do, according to a performative view of cultural production. In other words, they are not simply new monuments to be added to Fascism's already powerful iconography, but an integral part of those processes of incorporation and rule at work in the construction of Italy's national/imperial identity.  相似文献

Jerusalem is a city of many contrasts. It is a historical-symbolic city, revered by Muslims, Christians and Jews. However, its citizens segregate ethno-nationally, culturally and socially, into different identity groups: Jews and Arabs, Haredi (`ultra-Orthodox') and secular Jews, and lower and upper class socio-economic groups. This essay focuses on how political and social struggles over territories reshape the nature of the identities of four distinct groups in Jerusalem. These are ethno-national groups (Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs), cultural groups (ultra-Orthodox Jews, in Hebrew Haredim (zealots), and non-Orthodox Jews), ethno-social groups (disadvantaged groups mainly of oriental descent, in Hebrew Mizrahim and advantaged groups) and economic and ecological groups (the business sector and inhabitants of private residential areas of the city). Thus, long-term historical processes have produced distinct ethno-national, cultural and social identity groups, which occupy specific territories within Jerusalem. The different groups have endowed their territory with dissimilar geopolitical, cultural, and economic meanings and played a major role in the reconstruction of national, cultural, social and ecological identities in the city. The city of Jerusalem is not only a spiritual centre associated with age-long dreams for peace and justice, it is also a violent city, rife with tensions and conflicts, a symbol of national, cultural, economic and ecological struggles. Perhaps the greatest challenge facing all those concerned about its future is whether Jerusalem's universal image of a spiritual, tolerant and just city can overcome its current, particularistic and conflict ridden image.  相似文献

This article presents an historical review of the evolution of regional planning ideas under the growth pole paradigm, from its beginnings in the early 1950s to the current deluge of criticism. Then the outlines of an alternative approach are suggested, emphasizing what is called territorial development, a concept which focuses on meeting the cultural, political and economic needs of regional population groups — as opposed to urging their functional integration into the broader national and world economy. It is argued that territorial development can only be achieved by arousing the regional communities themselves into seeking selective regional closure and strategic regional advantage through willful community action.  相似文献

Emphasis is placed on the role synchronised cohort mortality in the dynamics of beech (Nothofagus) forest in New Zealand. Mature populations are frequently relatively even-aged and have size structures which render them vulnerable to exogenous disturbances from which they cannot recover, except by regeneration. Examples of regeneration systems in pure and mixed stands are described. Mountain beech (N. solandri var.cliffortioides) is a relatively short-lived light demanding species largely dependent upon exogenous canopy destruction for regeneration. Red beech (N. fusca) is a larger longer-lived tree which can maintain its population by autonomous gap-phase regeneration. When these species grow in mixture with silver beech (N. menziesii) in the absence of disturbance, they seem destined to be replaced by it, because silver beech is more shade tolerant and longer-lived. Thus, factors promoting stand synchrony are important for mountain and red beech, because if large scale canopy opening does not occur, sites are more likely to be lost to competitors. Cohort synchrony is associated also with physiological synchrony between individuals. Consequently periodic stresses, such as mast seeding, may affect almost all individuals. Storm damage and drought years are implicated. If only a few individuals (or even parts of individuals) die, this can lead to rapid stand decline, and subsequent large scale regeneration.  相似文献

Spinel and plagioclase peridotites from the Mt.Maggiore (Corsica, France) ophiolitic massif record a composite asthenosphere–lithosphere history of partial melting and subsequent multi-stage melt–rock interaction. Cpx-poor spinel lherzolites are consistent with mantle residues after low-degree fractional melting (F = 5–10%). Opx + spinel symplectites at the rims of orthopyroxene porphyroclasts indicate post-melting lithospheric cooling (T = 970–1,100°C); this was followed by formation of olivine embayments within pyroxene porphyroclasts by melt–rock interaction. Enrichment in modal olivine (up to 85 wt%) at constant bulk Mg values, and variable absolute REE contents (at constant LREE/HREE) indicate olivine precipitation and pyroxene dissolution during reactive porous melt flow. This stage occurred at spinel-facies depths, after incorporation of the peridotites in the thermal lithosphere. Plagioclase-enriched peridotites show melt impregnation microtextures, like opx + plag intergrowths replacing exsolved cpx porphyroclasts and interstitial gabbronoritic veinlets. This second melt–rock interaction stage caused systematic chemical changes in clinopyroxene (e.g. Ti, REE, Zr, Y increase), related to the concomitant effects of local melt–rock interaction at decreasing melt mass, and crystallization of small (<3%) trapped melt fractions. LREE depletion in minerals of the gabbronoritic veinlets indicates that the impregnating melts were more depleted than normal MORB. Preserved microtextural evidence of previous melt–rock interaction in the impregnated peridotites suggests that they were progressively uplifted in response to lithosphere extension and thinning. Migrating melts were likely produced by mantle upwelling and melting related to extension; they were modified from olivine-saturated to opx-saturated compositions, and caused different styles of melt–rock interaction (reactive spinel harzburgites, vs. impregnated plagioclase peridotites) depending on the lithospheric depths at which interaction occurred. Moisture in stone material is the key factor for all stone deterioration processes and also in weathering of cultural heritage. With additional presence of salts in the material the situation gets even more critical. While the properties of pure salts with moisture are well known, knowledge about the interaction of salt mixtures with moisture is still poor. In different approaches the reactions of salt-contaminated stone material on changing moisture were tested in the laboratory. Experiments with different solutions in the Na-Mg-SO4-NO3-H2O system revealed interesting new results on the moisture behaviour of salt-contaminated samples. Theoretical considerations and computer simulations are helpful to interpret the data obtained, but are not yet sufficient to explain the real processes acting on site at the monuments. More encouraging to this fact are complementary studies on visible efflorescences in the same salt system. It is shown how by experimental approaches the understanding on salt-induced stone deterioration is strongly complemented.  相似文献
