We present the single stellar population (SSP) synthesis results of our new synthetic stellar atmosphere models library with a spectral sampling of 0.3 Å, covering the wavelength range from 3000 to 7000 Å for a wide range of metallicities (twice solar, solar, half solar and 1/10 solar). The stellar library is composed of 1650 spectra computed with the latest improvements in stellar atmospheres. In particular, it incorporates non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) line-blanketed models for hot  ( T eff≥ 27 500 K)  , and LTE line-blanketed models (Phoenix) for cool  (3000 ≤ T eff≤ 4500 K)  stars. Because of the high spectral resolution of this library, evolutionary synthesis models can be used to predict the strength of numerous weak absorption lines and the evolution of the profiles of the strongest lines over a wide range of ages. The SSP results have been calculated for ages from 1 Myr to 17 Gyr using the stellar evolutionary tracks provided by the Geneva and Padova groups. For young stellar populations, our results have a very detailed coverage of high-temperature stars with similar results for the Padova and Geneva isochrones. For intermediate and old stellar populations, our results, once degraded to a lower resolution, are similar to the ones obtained by other groups (limitations imposed by the stellar evolutionary physics notwidthstanding). The limitations and advantages of our models for the analysis of integrated populations are described. The full set of the stellar library and the evolutionary models are available for retrieval at the websites http://www.iaa.csic.es/~rosa and http://www.iaa.csic.es/~mcs/sed@ , or on request from the first two authors.  相似文献

Stellar population models are a very useful tool to derive the stellar cluster age and luminosity mass from its integrated light. Evolutionary synthesis models depend on the stellar evolutionary tracks and the stellar libraries used to predict the spectral energy distribution of the stellar populations. In this review, I briefly comment on the new models that have incorporated the new evolutionary tracks with rotation and new computations for the evolutionary tracks of the TP-AGB. A more extended summary is also given of the current status of the most recent high-resolution stellar libraries at optical wavelengths and their implementation in evolutionary synthesis models. A comparison of the results obtained fitting the optical spectra of LMC and SMC stellar clusters with different high spectral resolution evolutionary synthesis models is also presented.  相似文献

Sun-like stars are known to display a wide variety of magnetic activity which is likely to be the signature of a hydromagnetic dynamo mechanism working in stellar interiors. This dynamo mechanism has been studied extensively in the context of the Sun. Here we take ideas and experiences gained from solar dynamo modeling and build upon it to study the inferred scaling laws, involving stellar parameters, from observations of stellar magnetic activity. We also discuss how such a synthesis of theoretical dynamo modeling of Sun-like stars and stellar cycle observations may help us reconstruct the long-term variability of the Sun – an important ingredient for understanding the effects of solar forcing on space and global climate.  相似文献

We present a method of determining lower limits on the masses of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars and so constraining the PMS evolutionary tracks. This method uses the redshifted absorption feature observed in some emission-line profiles of T Tauri stars, indicative of infall. The maximum velocity of the accreting material measures the potential energy at the stellar surface, which, combined with an observational determination of the stellar radius, yields the stellar mass. This estimate is a lower limit owing to uncertainties in the geometry and projection effects. Using available data, we show that the computed lower limits can be larger than the masses derived from PMS evolutionary tracks for M   0.5 M. Our analysis also supports the notion that accretion streams do not impact near the stellar poles but probably hit the stellar surface at moderate latitudes.  相似文献

Star‐disc coupling is considered in numerical models where the stellar field is not an imposed perfect dipole, but instead a more irregular self‐adjusting dynamo‐generated field. Using axisymmetric simulations of the hydromagnetic mean‐field equations, it is shown that the resulting stellar field configuration is more complex, but significantly better suited for driving a stellar wind. In agreement with recent findings by a number of people, star‐disc coupling is less efficient in braking the star than previously thought. Moreover, stellar wind braking becomes equally important. In contrast to a perfect stellar dipole field, dynamo‐generated stellar fields favor field‐aligned accretion with considerably higher velocity at low latitudes, where the field is weaker and originating in the disc. Accretion is no longer nearly periodic (as it is in the case of a stellar dipole), but it is more irregular and episodic. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Thermal-convective instability of a hydromagnetic, composite, rotating, inviscid and infinitely conducting plasma in a stellar atmosphere has been studied in the presence of finite Larmor radius. It is found that the criterion for monotonic instability holds good in the presence of the effects due to rotation and finite Larmor radius.  相似文献

The problem of thermal-convective instability of a hydromagnetic composite plasma in a stellar atmosphere has been studied with Hall effects. The criterion for monotonic instability has been found to be unchanged by the presence of Hall effects.  相似文献

Evolutionary synthesis of stellar populations: a modular tool   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A new tool for the evolutionary synthesis of stellar populations is presented, which is based on three independent matrices, giving respectively (1) the fuel consumption during each evolutionary phase as a function of stellar mass, (2) the typical temperatures and gravities during such phases, and (3) the colours and bolometric corrections as functions of gravity and temperature. The modular structure of the code allows one easily to assess the impact on the synthetic spectral energy distribution of the various assumptions and model ingredients, such as, for example, uncertainties in stellar evolutionary models, the mixing length, the temperature distribution of horizontal branch stars, asymptotic giant branch mass loss, and colour–temperature transformations. The so-called 'AGB phase transition' in Magellanic Cloud clusters is used to calibrate the contribution of the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch phase to the synthetic integrated luminosity. As an illustrative example, solar-metallicity ( Y  = 0.27, Z  = 0.02) models, with ages ranging between 30 Myr and 15 Gyr and various choices for the slope of the initial mass function, are presented. Synthetic broad-band colours and the luminosity contributions of the various evolutionary stages are compared with Large Magellanic Cloud and Galactic globular cluster data. In all these cases, a good agreement is found. Finally, the evolution is presented of stellar mass-to-light ratios in the bolometric and U B V R K passbands, in which the contribution of stellar remnants is accounted for.  相似文献

A semi-empirical formulation is given of the rate of stellar mass loss by stellar winds. Evolutionary studies of stars in the pre-main sequence (T Tauri) stage are presented for a variety of rates of mass loss. It has been found that different mass loss rates produce only small changes in the positions of equal evolutionary time lines in HR diagrams. Thus it is concluded that the spread of points in HR diagrams of young clusters results from a spread in their times of formation. This is consistent with the initiation of star formation by violent hydrodynamic compression of a typical interstellar cloud.  相似文献

The physical characteristics of possible axisymmetric equilibria are examined on the basis of the integrals of hydromagnetic equations. It is shown for nearly spherical configurations that a surface differential rotation is possible only in the absence of a meridional circulation with either purely toroidal or purely poloidal magnetic field. In the presence of a meridional circulation, it is shown that no surface rotation or constant rotation is possible if the magnetic field is purely toroidal, and that no rotation is possible if the magnetic field is purely poloidal. A brief discussion is given on the possible solutions including the case of stellar winds with force-free magnetic fields. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

After decades of effort, the solar activity cycle is exceptionally well characterized, but it remains poorly understood. Pioneering work at the Mount Wilson Observatory demonstrated that other Sun-like stars also show regular activity cycles, and suggested two possible relationships between the rotation rate and the length of the cycle. Neither of these relationships correctly describes the properties of the Sun, a peculiarity that demands explanation. Recent discoveries have started to shed light on this issue, suggesting that the Sun’s rotation rate and magnetic field are currently in a transitional phase that occurs in all middle-aged stars. Motivated by these developments, we identify the manifestation of this magnetic transition in the best available data on stellar cycles. We propose a reinterpretation of previously published observations to suggest that the solar cycle may be growing longer on stellar evolutionary timescales, and that the cycle might disappear sometime in the next 0.8?–?2.4 Gyr. Future tests of this hypothesis will come from ground-based activity monitoring of Kepler targets that span the magnetic transition, and from asteroseismology with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission to determine precise masses and ages for bright stars with known cycles.  相似文献

The formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies (EGs) are still an open question. In particular, recent observations suggest that EGs are not only simple spheroidal systems of old stars. In this paper, we analyse a sample of EGs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in order to study the star-forming activity in local EGs. Among these 487 ellipticals, we find that 13 EGs show unambiguous evidence of recent star formation activity betrayed by conspicuous nebular emission lines. Using the evolutionary stellar population synthesis models and Lick absorption line indices, we derive stellar ages, metallicities and α-element abundances, and thus reconstruct the star formation and chemical evolution history of the star-forming elliptical galaxies (SFEGs) in our sample.
We find that SFEGs have relative younger stellar population age, higher metallicity and lower stellar mass, and that their star formation history can be well described by a recent minor and short starburst superimposed on old stellar component. We also detect 11 E+A galaxies whose stellar population properties are closer to those of quiescent (normal) ellipticals than to star-forming ones. However, from the analysis of their absorption line indices, we note that our E+A galaxies show a significant fraction of intermediate-age stellar populations, remarkably different from the quiescent galaxies. This might suggest an evolutionary link between E+As and star-forming ellipticals. Finally, we confirm the relations between age, metallicity, α-element abundance and stellar mass for local EGs.  相似文献

The hydromagnetic stability of an electrically conducting compressible plasma having variable density in the vertical direction has been investigated taking into account the effects of Hallcurrents. The solution is shown to be characterized by a variational principle. Based on the existence of variational principle, the dispersion relation has been obtained for the case of a plasma having exponentially varying density with special reference to stellar atmosphere. It is found that both compressibility of the medium and Hall-currents destabilize the configuration for the disturbances, for which it was stable otherwise. The Hall-currents even suppress the mode of maximum instability for large magnitudes.  相似文献

Correlations between stellar kinematics and chemical abundances are fossil evidence for evolutionary connections between Galactic structural components. Extensive stellar surveys show that the only tolerably clear distinction between galactic components appears in the distributions of specific angular momentum. Here the stellar metal-poor halo and the metal-rich bulge are indistinguishable from each other, as are the thick disk and the old disk. Each pair is very distinct from the other. This leads to an evolutionary model in which the metal-poor stellar halo evolves into the inner bulge, while the thick disk is a precursor to the thin disk. These evolutionary sequences are distinct. The galaxy is made of two discrete 'populations', one of low and one of high angular momentum. Some (minor?) complexity is added to this picture by the debris of late and continuing mergers, which will be especially important in the outer stellar halo.  相似文献

galev (GALaxy EVolution) evolutionary synthesis models describe the evolution of stellar populations in general, of star clusters as well as of galaxies, both in terms of resolved stellar populations and of integrated light properties over cosmological time-scales of ≥13 Gyr from the onset of star formation shortly after the big bang until today.
For galaxies, galev includes a simultaneous treatment of the chemical evolution of the gas and the spectral evolution of the stellar content, allowing for what we call a chemically consistent treatment: we use input physics (stellar evolutionary tracks, stellar yields and model atmospheres) for a large range of metallicities and consistently account for the increasing initial abundances of successive stellar generations.
Here we present the latest version of the galev evolutionary synthesis models that are now interactively available at http://www.galev.org . We review the currently used input physics, and also give details on how this physics is implemented in practice. We explain how to use the interactive web interface to generate models for user-defined parameters and also give a range of applications that can be studied using galev , ranging from star clusters, undisturbed galaxies of various types E–Sd to starburst and dwarf galaxies, both in the local and the high-redshift Universe.  相似文献

In the first part of the paper the known results on the gravitational interaction of a massive black hole with the surrounding stars in a galactic nucleus are discussed. The tidal disruption of stars in close encounters with a black hole is reviewed. Expressions for the flux of stars on a black hole are given, taking into account energy and angular momentum diffusion of stellar orbits. The scenario of star disruption and accretion of the released stellar matter is depicted. The growth of a black hole in a typical galactic nucleus on account of gas accretion from disrupted stars is discussed. A comparison with the upper limit to the luminosity of the nucleus of our Galaxy puts rather severe constraints on the mass of a hypothetical black hole at the galactic centre. Possible mechanisms preventing the formation and growth of black holes in normal galactic nuclei are discussed. The second part of the paper (Section 8) deals with the hypothesis that massive black holes are the primary energy sources in active galaxies and quasars. The luminosity requirements of bright quasars and weak Seyferts can probably be accounted for in such a model, but there are difficulties in explaining the intermediate range. Mass ejection from Seyferts and quasars is not a severe problem. The same applies to the spectrum. A much more serious objection is the observed periodic and quasi-periodic variability. Another unsatisfactory feature of this hypothesis is that one needs two different evolutionary tracks for quasars and active galaxies, and for normal galaxies.  相似文献

As a tool for interpreting nearby and high-redshift galaxy data from the optical to K-band we present our chemically consistent spectrophotometric evolutionary synthesis models. These models take into account the increasing initial metallicity of successive stellar generations using recently published metallicity-dependent stellar evolutionary tracks, stellar yields and model atmosphere spectra. The influence of the metallicity is analysed. Dust absorption is included on the basis of gas content and abundance as it varies with time and galaxy type. We compare our models with IUE template spectra and are able to predict UV fluxes for different spectral types. Combining our models with a cosmological model we obtain evolutionary and k corrections for various galaxy types and show the differences from models using only solar metallicity input physics as a function of redshift, wavelength band and galaxy type. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The unified sight of solar and stellar activity has revealed a worthwhile concept under several aspects, gaming in the last decade the increasing favour of observers and theorists, and the term solar-stellar connection has recently been introduced to point out the complementarity of solar and stellar observations in the background of the basic role played by the magnetic field. The great development of stellar activity observations suggests a much wider scenario than it were possible to imagine even a few years ago and stimulates theoretical work, most of which is in the framework of the - dynamo theory.Although dynamo theory seems to be plausible and successful in capturing the fundamental mechanism of solar and stellar activity, several uncertainties and intrinsic limits do still exist and are discussed together with alternative or complementary suggestions.Further, it is stressed the relevance of nonlinear problems in dynamo theory — as magnetoconvection, growth and stability of flux tubes against magnetic buoyancy, hydromagnetic global dynamos — to improve our understanding of both small and large scale interaction of rotation, turbulent convection and magnetic field, and of the transition from linear to nonlinear regime. Finally, recent dynamo models of stellar activity are critically reviewed, as to the dependence of activity indexes and cycles on rotation rate and spectral type.Open problems to be solved by future work are outlined, pointing out the role of ever increasing stellar data in widening out our comprehension of the dynamo operation modes, which seem to depend on stellar structure, rotation and age.  相似文献

Stellar masses and ages are not directly observable parameters, and the methods used to determine them are based on the calibrating relations. In particular, the mass–luminosity relation, based on the masses of less than 200 well-studied binaries, is virtually the only way to estimate the mass of single stars. Thus, the development of methods for estimating stellar masses with accuracy comparable to direct methods is a problem of vital importance.
Here, we describe a method for estimating stellar masses and ages, which is based on the geometric similarity of evolutionary tracks for the stars at the same evolutionary stage in the Hertzsprung–Russell (HR) diagram. To examine the proposed approach, it has been applied to various test data sets. Application of the method, using synthetic stellar spectra Basel Stellar Library (of theoretical spectra; BaSeL), demonstrates that it allows determination of masses and ages of stars with a predictable distribution of uncertainties.
This statistical approach allows us to demonstrate the viability of the method using it on the set of double-lined eclipsing binaries with intermediate-mass and low-mass components which allows us to compare calculated characteristics with observational ones. As a result, the uncertainties of the stellar masses estimated with the proposed method are comparable with the accuracy of ones obtained from direct observations. This allows us to recommend the method for mass estimates of masses of single stars by the localization in the HR diagram.
As for the ages, the estimates for intermediate-mass stars are more reliable, while those obtained for low-mass stars are very uncertain, due both to slower movement of these stars in the HR diagram with age at stages close to the main sequence and to certain disagreements between theoretical models for this mass range.  相似文献
