The influence of magnetic field and rotation on the occurrence of convective instabilities in the liquid layer of neutron star envelopes has been investigated. The critical wavelength c , which denotes the boundary between stable and unstable behaviour of convective disturbances, is calculated for a neutron star model as a function of magnetic field and rotation. It is shown that the strength of the magnetic fields of neutron stars strongly suppresses the onset of convection, whereas the limiting effect of rotation acts only if the magnetic field vanishes.  相似文献

In the presence of a strong magnetic field (such as those believed to be characteristic of neutron stars:B-1012 Gauss) positronium may annihilate through the emission of a single photon, the magnetic field providing the photon momentum. We report on calculations of the one-photon and two-photon annihilation rates for the ground state of positronium, for magnetic fields in the range (1–44)×1012 Gauss, and give, in the two-photon case, the minimum energy half-width of the emission line due to the momentum contributions from the magnetic field. We find that unless neutron stars have magnetic fields in excess of 1013 Gauss, it is unlikely that the one-photon process will be observable.Research supported in part by the National Research Council of Canada.  相似文献

With the assumption, the physical 3-spacet = constant in a superdense star is spheroidal and the matter-density on the boundary surface of the configurationa = 2 × 1014 g cm–3( the average matter density in a neutron star) Vaidya and Tikekar (1982) proposed an exact relativistic model for a neutron star. They suggested that their model can describe the hydrostatic equilibrium conditions in such a superdense star with densities in the range of 1014-1016 g cm–3. Based on this model Parui and Sarma (1991) estimated the maximum limit of the density variation parameter for a stable neutron star (both for charged and uncharged) which is equal to 0.68, i.e. max = 0.68.In this paper we have shown variation of central density per unit equilibrium radius (0/a), variation of mass, upper limit of density variation parameter both for charged and uncharged neutron stars at densities 1015 and 1016 g cm–3, respectively. We have obtained max = 0.68, i.e. the same as before. The important is that the duration of stability among the neutron star's constituents around max will be shorter and shorter at higher densities as we proceed near the centre of the neutron star. In case of a charged neutron star, once stability among the constituents has been established, then unstability appears gradually maintaining linear relation between change in central density per unit equilibrium radius and change in mass whereas in case of uncharged neutron star, linear relation does not maintain.  相似文献

Cyclotron microwave emission from magnetic stars is considered, assuming that they have coronae with the temperatureT107 K and the emission measureEM1054 cm–3. It has been shown that the cyclotron radiation from a star with a dipole magnetic field has a specific spectrum with a maximum in the frequency rangesv o/2 >v >sv o/2 (s being the number of cyclotron harmonic, andv o the gyrofrequency corresponding to the polar magnetic field) and radiation flux decreasing towards lower frequencies asv 4/3. The frequency of the spectrum maximum depends on the angle between the line-of-sight and the magnetic axis of the star. The observed radiation from a rotating magnetic star can be modulated with a modulation depth of about 0.2 at frequencies near maximum. The radiation is partially circularly-polarized in the sense of an extraordinary mode. The degree of polarization is almost constant at frequenciesv >sv o/2 and increases with frequency atv >sv o/2. The estimation of cyclotron radio fluxes of the nearest magnetic stars shows that they are observable in microwaves by means of modern radio astronomy.  相似文献

The dependence of the spin frequency derivative \(\dot \nu \) of accreting neutron stars with a strongmagnetic field (X-ray pulsars) on the mass accretion rate (bolometric luminosity, Lbol) has been investigated for eight transient pulsars in binary systems with Be stars. Using data from the Fermi/GBM and Swift/BAT telescopes, we have shown that for seven of the eight systems the dependence \(\dot \nu \) (Lbol) can be fitted by the model of angular momentum transfer through an accretion disk, which predicts the relation \(\dot \nu \)L6/7bol. Hysteresis in the dependence \(\dot \nu \) (Lbol) has been confirmed in the system V 0332+53 and has been detected for the first time in the systems KS 1947+300, GRO J1008-57, and 1A 0535+26. Estimates for the radius of the neutron star magnetosphere in all of the investigated systems have been obtained. We show that this quantity varies from pulsar to pulsar and depends strongly on the analytical model and the estimates for the neutron star and binary system parameters.  相似文献

A model of compact galactic nuclei in statistical equilibrium was developed in [L. Sh. Grigorian and G. S. Sahakian, Astrofizika (in press)]. It was shown that they should consist predominantly of neutron stars (pulsars) and white dwarfs. The problem of the energy reserves of galactic nuclei is discussed in terms of this concept. The mechanism of conversion of a white dwarf into a neutron star due to the accretion of interstellar matter is considered. This means that a galactic nucleus has an energy reserve of some 5·1060 N8 erg (N is the number of stars in the nucleus). It is shown that galactic nuclei are powerful sources of hard γ radiation [power L » 2·1044µ30N8(Ω/50)17/7 erg/sec, where µ is the magnetic moment and Ω is the angular rotation rate of a neutron star ] due to curvature radiation from relativistic electron fluxes flowing along channels of open magnetic field lines of pulsars. The x-ray and ultraviolet emission are due to synchrotron emission from the same electron fluxes in the magnetic field of the galactic nucleus (L » 1042-1044 erg/sec). The optical (visible and infrared) and radio emission are due to bremsstrahlung from electrons in the interstellar medium [L » 6·1046N 8 2 (5/Rpc)3 erg/sec, where R is the radius of the galactic nucleus]. An equation is obtained for the magnetic moment of a pulsar: µ ≈ 3.4·10-5LγP17/7, where P is the pulsar’s period and L03B3; is the luminosity of the pulsar’s y radiation.  相似文献

We adopt that in the interior of neutron stars both the proton and neutron superfluids are in the vortex state. Thus, in the superconducting core the magnetic field is expected to be organized in the form of quantized fluxoids. It is shown that fluxoids are buoyant. This gives rise to a rapid (5×104 yr) expulsion of the magnetic field out of the superconducting core to the subcrustal region, and a subsequent decay within the outer crust. The effect considered may be the physical reason why the characteristic decay-time of pulsar magnetic fields (106 yr) corresponds to the ohmic dissipation time within the neutron star crust. The intersection of two types of vortex lines with each other and its possible consequence for pulsars is briefly discussed.  相似文献

On the basis of the current knowledge about the size of the neutron, the nucleon-nucleon interaction, and the limit on the ratioGm/c 2 R<4/9 imposed by General Relativity, we find an upper limit of about 2M , for stars of uniform density in the neutron phase. The importance of an accurate determination of the neutron radius for neutron stars studies is pointed out.  相似文献

The applications of the spectral analysis methods discovered by Kirchhoff for the investigation of stellar magnetic fields are considered. The statistical properties of the mean magnetic fields for OBA stars have been investigated by analyzing data from two catalogs of magnetic fields. It is shown that the mean effective magnetic field ℬ of a star can be used as a statistically significant characteristic of its magnetic field. The magnetic field distribution functions F(ℬ) have been constructed for B-type and chemically peculiar (CP) stars, which exhibit a power-law dependence on ℬ. A sharp decrease in F(ℬ) in the range of weak magnetic fields has been found. The statistical properties of the magnetic fluxes for main-sequence stars, white dwarfs, and neutron stars are analyzed.  相似文献

It is shown that the radius of curvature of magnetic field lines in the polar region of a rotating magnetized neutron star can be significantly less than the usual radius of curvature of the dipole magnetic field. The magnetic field in the polar cap is distorted by toroidal electric currents flowing in the neutron star crust. These currents close up the magnetospheric currents driven by the electron–positron plasma generation process in the pulsar magnetosphere. Owing to the decrease in the radius of curvature, electron–positron plasma generation becomes possible even for slowly rotating neutron stars, with   PB −2/312 < 10 s  , where P is the period of star rotation and   B 12= B /1012 G  is the magnitude of the magnetic field on the star surface.  相似文献

Collapse calculations indicate that the hot young neutron stars rotate differentially so that strong toroidal magnetic field components should exist in the outer shell where also the Hall effect appears to be important when the Hall parameter = ωBτ exceeds unity. The amplitudes of the induced toroidal magnetic fields are limited by the current‐induced Tayler instability. An important characteristics of the Hall effect is its distinct dependence on the sign of the magnetic field. We find for fast rotation that positive (negative) Hall parameters essentially reduce (increase) the stability domain. It is thus concluded that the toroidal field belts in young neutron stars induced by their differential rotation should have different amplitudes in both hemispheres which later are frozen in. Due to the effect of magnetic suppression of the heat conductivity also the brightness of the two hemispheres should be different. As a possible example for our scenario the isolated neutron star RBS 1223 is considered which has been found to exhibit different X‐ray brightness at both hemispheres (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A model of -bursts is considered that treats the flares of neutron stars as a result of convectiveoscillation instability associated with the stars having strong internal magnetic fields ( 1013 to 1014 G). In the context of this model only sufficiently old (104 to 107 yr), drastically cooled-down neutron stars may be sources of -bursts. The paper shows that major characteristics of a -burster in the Supernova N 49 remnant (energy release during burst up to 1044 erg, age 104 yr, burst-to-burst interval (I to 3)×106s; rotation period P=8 s) may be explained under the assumption that the mass of the neutron star is about 0.14M · while its mean magnetic field strength is 1.5×1014 G abd 1013 G within the star and on its surface, respectively. The observational tests of the model discussed conclude the paper.  相似文献

In this paper the gravitational collapse of cosmic gas clouds and formation of star clusters has been considered. Hoyle's view of successive fragmentation has been taken as the basic mechanim in the present work. The initial masses of protostars have been estimated as the function of their distances from the centre of the cluster and the intensity of the magnetic field of the medium. It has been shown that the fragmentation process is greatly inhibited by the presence of a strong magnetic field. A model has been constructed showing how a protostar grows in mass by accretion from the surrounding medium, on the basis of the assumption that as the star moves at random in the cluster it picks up a fraction of the material through which it passes. It has been estimated that a protostar of initial mass of about 0.1M grows to one of 1.0M in a time period which ranges from a few multiples of 105 to a few multiples of 107 yr, depending on the parameters involved in the accretion process. The number of stars per unit mass range has also been estimated; it is found to be proportional tom –3.3,m being the mass of the star.  相似文献

Spectra, angular distributions, and polarization of two-photon annihilation radiation in a magnetic field are studied in detail in the case of small longitudinal velocities of annihilating electrons and positrons which occupy the ground Landau level. Magnetic field essentially affects the annihilation if its magnitudeB is not very low in comparison withB cr=4.4×1013G, which may take place near the surface of a neutron star. The magnetic field broadens the spectra (the width depends on an angle betweenB and a wave vector) and leads to their asymmetry. The angular distribution may be highly anisotropic, being fan-like or pencillike for different photon energies . The total annihilation rate is suppressed by the magnetic field (B –3 forBB cr).The radiation is linearly polarized; the degree and orientation of the polarization depend onB, and . The polarization may reach several tens percent even for comparatively small fieldsB 0.1B crtypical for neutron stars. This means that the polarization may be detected, e.g., in the annihilation radiation from the gamma-ray bursts.  相似文献

We present the results of magnetic field measurements of four chemically peculiar (CP) stars with helium abundance anomalies which are the members of the Orion stellar association OB1. The stars under study were classified as magnetic by other authors earlier. The present paper contains the results of the extensive study of the stars. Magnetic field measurements allowed us to conclude that HD36540 has a weak field and the longitudinal component B e does not exceed 500 G. The longitudinal field of HD36668 varies with the period P = 2. d 11884 and the amplitude from ?2 to +2 kG. The magnetic field of HD36916 has mainly negative polarity and varies within the range from 0 to ?1 kG with the period P = 1.d 565238. HD37058 is a magnetic star, the longitudinal field of which varies from ?1.2 to +0.8 kG with the period P = 14. d 659. The B e field variability pattern for the stars HD36916 and HD37058 is of a simple harmonic type. The longitudinal field of HD36668 is best described with two combined harmonic functions (“a doublewave”). The variability period of HD36540 is still undetermined. For all the stars from this paper, we measured radial velocities V r, axial rotation rates v e sin i, and determined basic parameters of atmospheres (effective temperatures T eff and gravity acceleration log g). We also estimated masses M, luminosities L, and radii R of the stars.  相似文献

At present, it is widely believed that anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), rotational radio transients (RRATs), compact central objects (CCOs) in supernova remnants, and X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs) belong to different classes of anomalous objects in which the central bodies are isolated neutron stars. Previously, we have shown that AXPs and SGRs can be described in terms of the drift model for parameters of the central neutron star typical of radio pulsars (rotation periods P ~ 0.1–1 s and surface magnetic fields B ~ 1011–1013 G). Here, we show that some of the peculiarities of the sources under consideration can be explained by their geometry (in particular, by the angle β between the rotation axis and the magnetic moment). If β ? 10° (an aligned rotator), the drift waves in the outer layers of the neutron star magnetosphere can account for the observed periodicity in the radiation. For large β (a nearly orthogonal rotator), the observed modulation of the radiation and its short bursts can be explained by mass accretion from the ambient medium (e.g., a relic disk).  相似文献

The magnetic field distribution in the superfluid, spherical, hadronic core of a rotating neutron star, which consists of vortex and vortex-free zones, is investigated. Due to the effect of entrainment of superconducting protons by rotating superfluid neutrons, a nonuniform magnetic field, the average value of which is constant, is formed in the vortex zone of the neutron star, directed parallel to the star's axis of rotation. It is shown that at the stellar surface, near the equatorial plane, there is a vortex-free zone of macroscopic size in which there is no magnetic field. The magnetic field near the boundaries of the vortex-free zone falls off exponentially with depth into the interior of this zone. This result essentially alters earlier concepts about the magnetic field distribution in the superfluid hadronic core of a neutron star. Outside the hadronic core the magnetic field has a dipole character with a magnetic moment on the order of 1030 g×cm3.  相似文献

The possibility of investigating the vertical structure of the magnetic field in chemically peculiar main-sequence stars is discussed. The nonuniform distribution of chemical elements over the surface complicates the problem substantially. The most efficient measurements are shown to be those of the longitudinal field components based on spectral lines with wavelengths longer and shorter than 3646 Å (shortward and longward of the Balmer jump), which form at different optical depths in the atmosphere. Various methodological problems are addressed that must be overcome in order to accomplish the task. The brightest magnetic star α 2 CVn is observed with the echelle spectrometer equipped with an Uppsala CCD chip. New observations corroborate our previous result: the longitudinal component of the magnetic field B e of the α 2 CVn star increases with depth by about 30% over the atmosphere thickness scale.  相似文献

A two-dimensional potential energy surface of an H 2 + molecular ion is calculated for the case of the strong magnetic field of the neutron starB=1011–1013 G. It is shown that the dependence of the potential energy from the angle between the magnetic field direction and the internuclear axis becomes very sharp as the magnetic field increases. The obtained potential energy surfaces can be used for studying the vibrational-rotational structure of the H 2 + spectrum in a strong magnetic field and the development of the observational methods for the determination of the magnetic field of a neutron star.  相似文献

We can define some adiabatic exponents for neutron star cores. The equality of and 3 leads to an equation of stateE=P ln(K/P) orP=K exp(–E/P). This equation has been solved alongwith equations for hydrostatic equilibrium for different physical conditions at the centre. The parameters of isothermal neutron star cores have been computed by taking surface densityE a=2×1014 g cm–3. ForP 0=E 0 the maximum mass and radius of neutron star core are 3.25M and 17.14 km, respectively.  相似文献
