This memoir is a summary of my early childhood, education, and research career at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC. I describe my early interest in astronomy and how I wound up working in the fields of solar physics and X-ray-UV spectroscopy of high temperature plasmas. I describe some of my home life and other interests, my education at the University of Pittsburgh, and the various projects and management activities that I have been fortunate to work on at NRL. I have been blessed with being able to work at a first-class research laboratory populated by outstanding scientists. I am particularly blessed to have worked with my many friends and colleagues in the NRL Space Science Division. Perhaps I am most blessed by having had wonderful parents that gave me the interests I have in life and the passion to pursue them, and an outstanding wife that has been my partner through good and bad times for over 50 years. I am now retired but for three years I was a participant in the NRL Voluntary Emeritus Program (VEP). However, this memoir is a personal account, and not work done as a VEP.

It was in 1936 when a young Czech student of age 22 came to Japan through Siberia for participating in the solar eclipse expedition. Since then, he had visited us 13 times until 1993 (when he passed away). At each visit his lectures were vivid for us and had strong impact on the audience. Needless to say, it was the late Professor Zdeněk Kopal. In this brief presentation first I reveal my reminiscences of our common time in Manchester and Japan as a contemporary, and second I make some remarks on my activities for the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) for astronomy in developing countries, in a similar way like Professor Kopal contributed in later years to the development of astronomy mainly in middle-east countries.  相似文献

This article is a brief history of my life from childhood and describes how I became interested in astronomy. Starting from researches using radiative transfer as a main tool,I gradually expanded my research field to hydrodynamics(particularly convection,turbulence,pulsation,waves and helioseismology),magnetohydrodynamics and chaotic systems. Abstract— The science of nucleosynthesis was substantially inspired by chemical analyses of meteorites. As if in repayment, that theory now imbues meteoritics with enlarged meaning. I recount the emergence of four great issues for nucleosynthesis—issues that received decades of my own attention; and I describe unexpected abundance patterns within meteorites that were suggested by the resolution of those issues. The latter have altered the information content of meteoritic science. The issues are: 1. a quantitative s-process theory 2. cosmoradiogenic chronology 3. explosive nucleosynthesis and gamma-ray astronomy 4. cosmic chemical memory Starting from historical origins for each issue, I comment upon both the broad cultural canvas in which they lie and my own work in their establishment. Examples of predicted (or rationalized) meteoritic measurements illustrate our surprised delight at the expansion of the range and power of meteoritic science.  相似文献

Celestial mechanics has been a classical field of astronomy. Only a few astronomers were in this field and not so many papers on this subject had been published during the first half of the 20 thcentury.However, as the beauty of classical dynamics and celestial mechanics attracted me very much, I decided to take celestial mechanics as my research subject and entered university, where a very famous professor of celestial mechanics was a member of the faculty. Then as artificial satellites were launched starting from October 1958, new topics were investigated in the field of celestial mechanics. Moreover, planetary rings,asteroids with moderate values of eccentricity, inclination and so on have become new fields of celestial mechanics. In fact I have tried to solve such problems in an analytical way. Finally, to understand what gravitation is I joined the TAMA300 gravitational wave detector group.  相似文献

The theme of this conference is the evolution of telescopes over the last 400 years. I present my view on what the major leaps of technology have been, and attempt to predict what new technologies could come along in the next 50 years to change the way we do astronomy and help us make new discoveries. Are we approaching a peak of innovation and discovery, and will this be followed by a slow decline? Or are there prospects for even further technology leaps and consequent new discoveries? Will global resource and financial crises bring an end to our great ambitions, or will we continue with bigger telescopes and more ambitious space observatories?  相似文献

The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager project recently started processing the continuum-intensity images following global helioseismology procedures similar to those used to process the velocity images. The spatial decomposition of these images has produced time series of spherical harmonic coefficients for degrees up to \(\ell=300\), using a different apodization than the one used for velocity observations. The first 360 days of observations were processed and are made available. I present initial results from fitting these time series using my fitting method and compare the derived mode characteristics to those estimated using coeval velocity observations.  相似文献

Summary lecture     
This summary lecture makes no attempt to summarize what was actually said at the meeting, since this is well covered by the other contributors. Instead I have structured my presentation in three parts: First I try to demonstrate why the Sun is unique by comparing it with laboratory plasmas. This is followed by some personal reminiscences that go back a significant fraction of the century. I conclude in the form of a poem about this memorable conference in honor of the centennial anniversary of the Kodaikanal Observatory.  相似文献

May I first express my warmest thanks to the organizers of the Conference for having invited me to present a brief bibliographic report on the great astronomer F. W. Bessel. You have given me a welcome opportunity to express an appreciation of Bessel's work which has marked the beginning of research on the motion of stars and which was pioneer work on astrometric binaries and on the determination of stellar distances. Bessel has established the first celestial coordinate system which approximates an inertial system, and my colleagues and I at Heidelberg in establishing an improved fundamental reference system, the FK5, have had to review again some of Bessel's pioneer contributions to this field, and such contributions shall be mentioned later. My talk shall be divided into the following parts: (1) Bessel's course of life and family; (2) Education in astronomy in Bremen; (3) Fundamenta Astronomiae; (4) Fundamental observations at the Königsberg Observatory (or according to S. Newcomb (1906): the German School of Astrometry); (5) 61 Cygni; (6) Bibliography of Bessel's original works.Communication presented at the International Conference on Astrometric Binaries, held on 13–15 June, 1984, at the Remeis-Sternwarte Bamberg, Germany, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784–1846).  相似文献

The development of telescope capabilities tends to go in spurts. These are triggered by the availability of new techniques in optics, mechanics and/or instrumentation. So has nighttime telescope technology developed since the construction in the nineteen-forties of the 5-m Hale telescope, first by the introduction in the sixties of high efficiency electronic detectors, followed recently by the production of large 8- to 10-m mirrors and now by the implementation of adaptive optics. In solar astronomy, major steps were the introduction of the coronagraph by Lyot in the nineteen-thirties and the vacuum telescope concept by Dunn in the sixties. In the last thirty years, telescope developments in solar astronomy have relied primarily on improved instrumental capabilities. As in nighttime astronomy, these instruments and their detectors are reaching their limits set by the quantum nature of light and the telescope diffraction. Larger telescopes are needed to increase sensitivity and angular resolution of the observations. In this paper, I will review recent efforts to increase substantially the telescope capabilities themselves. I will emphasize the concept of a large all-wavelength, coronagraphic telescope (CLEAR) which is presently being developed.Dedicated to Cornelis de Jager  相似文献

New generation small telescopes can and should be very complementary facilities for the new large telescopes and for space astronomy. With CCD imaging detectors as part of their instrumentation package, they are most efficient research tools for many research programs. In addition, linking a number of them together into a "global network of astronomical telescopes" appears to make a good deal of sense. Astronomy is an observational discipline, and its improvement is driven by the progress of observation technology and instruments. The advancement of astronomy also constantly puts forward new requirements for observation instruments. Since the development of astronomy, the requirements for observing instruments have gradually become extreme, which brings great challenges in both cost and difficulty. In order to tackle the challenges, a future generation of astronomical optical technology and observation instruments based on new principles and technologies has become an inherent need to promote the advancement of astronomy. In recent years, the growth of integrated photonics has presented revolutionary opportunities for that of astronomical optical technology. On the basis, astrophotonics, an emerging interdisciplinary subject, can provide a new generation of high-performance optical terminal instruments with low cost and high integration (chip-based) for astronomical observation. Such instruments will play a vital role in space astronomical observation, large-scale spectral survey, high-resolution and high-precision spectral imaging, and other applications. This paper mainly introduces the main research contents and status quo of astronomical photonics starting from the instruments/device functions, briefly discusses the major problems in its development, and eventually forecasts its development prospect.  相似文献

天文学是一门观测学科, 其发展受观测技术及仪器进步所推动, 而天文科学发展同样不断对观测仪器提出新的要求. 天文学发展至今, 对观测仪器的要求逐渐走向极致和极端, 这在实现成本及难度两方面均带来极大挑战. 为应对上述挑战, 基于新原理、新技术的下一代天文光学技术及观测仪器已成为天文学发展的内在需要. 近年来, 集成光子学的发展为天文光学技术带来了新的变革性机遇, 在此基础上产生的新兴交叉学科天文光子学(Astrophotonics)可为天文观测提供低成本、高度集成化(芯片化)的新一代高性能光学终端仪器, 这类仪器将在空间天文观测、大规模光谱巡天、高分辨高精度光谱成像等应用中起到关键作用. 主要从仪器/器件功能出发介绍天文光子学主要研究内容及现状, 并简要讨论其发展所面临的主要问题, 最后对其发展趋势做出展望.  相似文献
