The Orbiting Stellar Interferometer (OSI) is a space-based astrometric interferometer designed primarily for wide-angle astrometry. OSI is potentially capable of achieving astrometric accuracies of 1as in narrow angle (1°) astrometry. This paper discusses the implications for astrometric planet detection, specifically the detection of Earth-like planets around nearby stars. OSI has the potential to detect a limited number of planetary systems with Earths, if a number of technical problems are solved.  相似文献

We propose a high-contrast coronagraph for direct imaging of young Jupiter-like planets orbiting nearby bright stars. The coronagraph employs a steptransmission filter in which the intensity is apodized with a finite number of steps with identical transmission in each step. It should be installed on a large ground-based telescope equipped with a state-of-the-art adaptive optics system. The direct images of giant extrasolar planets recently obtained around several main sequence stars represent a major step in the study of planetary systems. These high-dynamic range images are among the most striking results obtained by the current generation of high-angular resolution instruments which will be superseded by a new generation of instruments in the coming years. It is, therefore, an appropriate time to review the contributions of high-angular resolution visible/infrared techniques to the rapidly growing field of extrasolar planetary science. During the last 20 years, the advent of the Hubble Space Telescope, of adaptive optics on 4- to 10-m class ground-based telescopes, and of long-baseline infrared stellar interferometry, has opened a new viewpoint on the formation and evolution of planetary systems. By spatially resolving the optically thick circumstellar discs of gas and dust where planets are forming, these instruments have considerably improved our models of early circumstellar environments and have thereby provided new constraints on planet formation theories. High-angular resolution techniques are also directly tracing the mechanisms governing the early evolution of planetary embryos and the dispersal of optically thick material around young stars. Finally, mature planetary systems are being studied with an unprecedented accuracy thanks to single-pupil imaging and interferometry, precisely locating dust populations and putting into light a whole new family of long-period giant extrasolar planets.  相似文献

We present the high angular resolution technique of colour-differential interferometry for direct detection of extrasolar giant planets (EGPs). The measurement of differential phase with long-baseline ground-based interferometers in the near-infrared could allow the observation of several hot giant extrasolar planets in tight orbit around the nearby stars, and thus yield their low- or mid-resolution spectroscopy, complete orbital data set and mass. Estimates of potentially achievable signal-to-noise ratios are presented for a number of planets already discovered by indirect methods. The limits from the instrumental and atmospheric instability are discussed, and a subsequent observational strategy is proposed.  相似文献

We study the impact of the atmospheric differential chromatic refraction on the measurements and precision of relative astrometry. Specifically, we address the problem of measuring the separations of close pairs of binary stars with adaptive optics in the J and K bands.We investigate the influence of weather conditions, zenithal distance, star’s spectral type and observing wavelength on the astrometric precision and determine the accuracy of these parameters that is necessary to detect exoplanets with existing and planned large ground based telescopes with adaptive optics facilities. The analytical formulae for simple monochromatic refraction and a full approach, as well as moderately simplified procedure, are used to compute refraction corrections under a variety of observing conditions.It is shown that the atmospheric refraction must be taken into account in astrometric studies but the full procedure is not necessary in many cases. Requirements for achieving a certain astrometric precision are specified.  相似文献

The second decade of the third millennium will hopefully see a new generation of extremely large telescopes. These will have diameters from 30 to 100 meters and use advanced adaptive optics to operate at the diffraction limit in order to detect astronomical objects that are impossible to observe today, such as earth-like planets around nearby stars and the earliest objects in the Universe. Even for small fields of view, the requirements for detectors are daunting, with sizes of several gigapixels, very fast readout times and extremely low readout noise. In this paper I briefly review the science case for ELTs and the requirements they set on telescopes and instruments, and report on the status of the OWL 100 m telescope project and the challenges it poses.  相似文献

AGB variables, particularly the large amplitude Mira type, are a vital step on the distance scale ladder. They will prove particularly important in the era of space telescopes and extremely large ground-based telescopes with adaptive optics, which will be optimized for infrared observing. Our current understanding of the distances to these stars is reviewed with particular emphasis on improvements that came from Hipparcos as well as on recent work on Local Group galaxies. In addition to providing the essential calibration for extragalactic distances Gaia may also provide unprecedented insight into the poorly understood mass-loss process itself.  相似文献

We have measured apparent fluctuations in stellar radial velocities with the ELODIE fiber-fed crossed-dispersion spectrograph and the 193-cm telescope of Observatoire de Haute-Provence. Within one given night, the fluctuations consist of two terms which may be sorted out. The first comes from imperfect scrambling of the stellar beam; the second arises from photon noise and agrees closely with our published calculations. So far, scrambler noise dominates for bright stars, but a perfect scrambler could be built by combining adatative optics and a single-mode fiber. The photon-noise results confirm that extrasolar planetary searching by the radial-velocity technique may be implemented with relatively small telescopes for a large number of stars. Consequences for the detection of astrophysical noise are discussed.  相似文献

The understanding of high-energy astrophysical sources often depends on observations over the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Yet, extensive multifrequency observing campaigns can consume the resources of a large number of telescopes, including ground-based and satellite facilities, and usually involve large, unwieldy consortia of observers. Because most X-ray sources are variable on a short time-scale, there is an additional need to make the multifrequency observations simultaneous. The logistical difficulties involved in coordinating these observations, coupled with the vagaries of the weather at ground-based observing sites, mean that comparatively few such coordinated campaigns are attempted; of those that have been tried the success rate for achieving simultaneity is low.In the present paper we argue that simultaneous X-ray, optical and ultraviolet observations could be achieved more logically, cheaply, and effectively by mounting a small boresighted optical/UV-telescope alongside future X-ray telescopes. A 12 optical/UV monitor could, for instance, be incorporated into X-ray facilities such as the American AXAF or the European XMM missions with minimal impact on the total cost, weight, size, and telemetry requirements. Such a telescope, equipped with a position sensitive photoncounting detector, could provide two-dimensional photometric imaging of stars as faint asB=23.5 in a 1000 s exposure with a resolution that could easily be matched to that of the X-ray telescope. A series of wide- and narrow-band filters could be used to define spectral bands, while wide-field, low-resolution spectroscopy could be provided by a prism. Such an instrument could monitor not only the multifrequency variability of such active sources as quasars, Seyfert galaxies, BL Lac objects, X-ray binaries, cataclysmic variables, RS CVn stars, and flare stars, but also could provide astrometry, broadband colours, low-resolution spectroscopy, and imaging of constant sources and fortuitously observed field objects. Moreover, the concept of providing multifrequency simultaneous coverage of astrophysical objects in an unbiased way allows new phenomena to be discovered. A review is given of the scientific problems that require such a monitor, and some of the design and performance characteristics of a suitable monitor are discussed.  相似文献

Observations of the Earth’s exosphere have unveiled an extended envelope of hydrogen reaching further than 10 Earth radii composed of atoms orbiting around the Earth. This large envelope increases significantly the opacity of the Earth to Lyman α (Lyα) photons coming from the Sun, to the point of making feasible the detection of the Earth’s transit signature from 1.35 pc if pointing with an 8 meter primary mirror space telescope through a clean line of sight (N H <?1017 cm??2), as we show. In this work, we evaluate the potential detectability of Earth analogs orbiting around nearby M-type stars by monitoring the variability of the Lyα flux variability. We show that, in spite of the interstellar, heliospheric and astrospheric absorption, the transit signature in M5 V type stars would be detectable with a dedicated Lyα flux monitor implemented in a 4–8 m class space telescope. Such monitoring programs would enable measuring the robustness of planetary atmospheres under heavy space weather conditions like those produced by M-type stars. A 2-m class telescope, such as the World Space Observatory, would suffice to detect an Earth-like planet orbiting around Proxima Centauri, if there was such a planet or nearby M5 type stars.  相似文献

Ground-based observations of faint satellites nearby their planets with 1-2 m class telescopes usually do not allow for high quality astrometry and photometry, due to saturation by the primary or to poor S/N ratio on the satellite images, generally embedded on the scattered light of the planet. Earth-based observations of the Uranus satellites’ upcoming mutual events in 2007-2008 are no exception. In most cases, the event will take place at 4 arcs or less from the planet, with “planet minus satellite” brightness differences of 10 magnitudes. So as to make feasible the observations of these important phenomena, we have developed a prototype of a coronagraph of simple design making use of good quality commercial optical systems. Pilot tests made with this coronagraph with a telescope of show that it is possible to obtain S/N ratios of 50 or higher for 10 s exposures, for satellites as close as 2 Uranus radii from the planet center. We have also developed numerical algorithms which perform digital coronagraphy in the images, with the elimination of the influence of the planets’ scattered light. This procedure considerably improves the S/N ratio of the satellite images (with or without a coronagraph instrument) and shall be applied in the reduction of the observations of the Uranus events so as to achieve the highest possible photometric and astrometric quality.  相似文献

The potential of high-resolution spatial interferometry for detailed mapping and precision astrometry in the mid-infrared region, somewhat analogous to interferometry now done in the microwave region, is discussed from an instrumental point of view. Some results from a prototype system and from tests of atmospheric properties are given. The design of a more advanced two-telescope system now under construction is outlined. This involves movable telescopes of 1.65 m aperture and of high precision, using heterodyne detection of infrared in the 10 Μm atmospheric window.  相似文献

Fabry-Perot Interferometric observations were made on Orion Nebula in the forbidden emission line [S II] 6731 Å line. The observed field is about 6 × 6 on the face of the nebula and it covers the Orion Trapezium stars and the nearby regions. The relative line of sight velocities which denote the average deviations from the systematic velocities were derived at a large number of points in the nebula. Velocities were found to show a gradient towards the north of Trapezium stars. Large blue shifted velocities were found at the nebular boundaries, probably associated with the ionization fronts. The observed velocities, in general, show agreement with the flow model of Balick, Gull and Smith (1980).  相似文献

Observed temporal variations of shape and size of the solar disk as viewed from Earth may act as constraints for theories of the interior of the Sun. In addition to existing programs of solar diameter measurements we investigate a ground-based photographic method.The solar limb profile is recorded on a photoresist-coated substrate over a 20 radial length simultaneously all along the circonference as a three-dimensional 21 mm diameter, 0.0015mm thick permanent object available for inspection by interferometric methods. The exposure time is long enough for filtering much of the atmospheric turbulence, whereas the slope of the observed solar limb should help to locate a standard solar limb. The first results of February 1989 at large zenith distance and low altitude are a set of differential measurements of the position of a solar limb around a circle with, after taking into account the 3.7 atmospheric differential refraction, a 0.34r.m.s. dispersion of the residuals for a fit to a circular solar disk.We estimate that this method of accuracy comparable to other ground-based methods, with potentially more than 600 independent simultaneous measurements along the circonference, could help to discriminate between terrestrial and solar causes for variations of shape and size of the solar disk.We note that operation outside the Earth's atmosphere would provide access not only to undisturbed images but also to UV wavelengths, i.e., to a better definition of the solar limb.  相似文献

The availability of large format, low noise detector arrays has opened the 1 to 20 m region for sub-arcsecond imaging. Using recent results in the investigation of Galactic star forming regions, the Galactic center and external galaxies as examples, we discuss the various techniques that have been employed. These range from image selection and image sharpening, over speckle techniques and adaptive optics to lunar occultation. These examples demonstrate that sub-arcsecond imaging and spatial interferometry in the near- and mid-infrared has a great future potential.  相似文献

This article describes dual-field interferometry, in particular PRIMA, the phase-referenced imaging and micro-arcsecond astrometry facility of the very large telescope interferometer. It uses the simultaneous detection of fringes of two stars in a narrow angle and the accurate measurement of their respective positions. PRIMA aim is threefold: (i) to increase the VLTI limiting magnitude with off-axis fringe tracking, (ii) to reconstruct images with a resolution of 2 mas in K-band, 10 mas in N-band, and (iii) to perform differential narrow-angle astrometry with an accuracy of 10 μas. This article exposes the fundamental and technical limitations of such a technique and presents how PRIMA will try to solve the practical problems of measuring 100-m long optical paths with nanometric accuracy in a ground based interferometer.  相似文献

The optical properties of circumstellar silicate dust grains around oxygen-rich giant stars are investigated with close attention to infrared observations of OH/IR stars. The optical constants are deduced from available astronomical and laboratory data. The deduced opacities at longer wavelengths (12 m) for OH/IR stars are higher than the one for M-type Miras possibly because of the change of optical constants depending on temperature of dust grains. Absorption and scattering efficiencies are evaluated for various grain size distributions and shapes. The results of detailed radiative transfer model calculations based on our dust parameters are compared with observational data. After a short summary of the results expected from the HIPPARCOS mission, the author gives several examples illustrating the needs that will arise afterwards in order to maintain the level of precision achieved and to extend it to many more objects. Three domains are particularly dealt with in this paper:
  1. The maintenance of the HIPPARCOS reference system that will degrade at the rate of 2 mas per year. The instruments intended to contribute to this task should concentrate on observing a few stars as accurately as possible. The best candidates are astrolabes and optical interferometers.
  2. The extension of the HIPPARCOS catalogue to more stars using astrographs, Schmidt telescopes, and photoelectric meridian circles. A particularly important objective would be to reduce the GSE catalogue to this system and determine its proper motions with second epoch plates.
  3. The determination of new parallaxes and double star parameters in particular with CCD astrometry, astrometric photometry and various interferometric techniques.

One-hundred and three nearby bright Main-Sequence stars of spectral type F and G have been searched for infrared excess in order to find out Vega-like characteristics. In our sample of bright Main-Sequence F and G stars none of the G-type stars show infrared excess but 4 out of 28 F-type stars are Vega-like and the equilibrium distances of dust shells are within the planet-forming region.  相似文献
