Benthic microalgae are key contributors to near-shore food webs and sediment stabilization. Temporal variability in microalgal biomass and production throughout the tidal cycle has been well documented; however, due to limitations of traditional methods of analysis patterns of community composition and diversity over such time scales have not been revealed. To explore the latter and better understand how short-term changes throughout the tidal cycle may affect community functioning, we compared benthic diatom composition and diversity over tidal stage shifts. We employed two disparate molecular techniques (denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis with Sanger DNA sequencing of excised bands and high-throughput community metagenome sequencing) to characterize diatom assemblages in representative muddy and sandy intertidal sites in Charleston Harbor, SC, USA. In support of prior studies, we found higher diatom diversity in sandbar as compared to mudflat sediments. Spatial differences were stronger relative to tidal temporal differences, although diversity metrics generally were highest after prolonged tidal immersion as compared to low-tide emersion or just after immersion at flood tide. Composition of the diatom assemblage differed markedly between sites, with species in genera Halamphora, Amphora, and Navicula dominating the sandbar, whereas Cyclotella, Skeletonema, and Thalassiosira were the most prevalent genera on the mudflat. Diatom composition differed by tidal stage, with assemblages during low-tide exposure distinct from samples taken after immersion. Both sandbar and mudflat sediments exhibited increases in relative proportion of epipelic diatoms and decreases in planktonic taxa during low-tide exposure. Our findings of short-term changes in species composition and dominance could inform primary productivity models to better estimate understudied diatom contributions in heterogeneous and highly variable tidal systems.  相似文献

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is now recognized as an important source of nutrients and freshwater to some coastal environments. We studied a shallow coastal lagoon (Little Lagoon, AL, USA) in the northern Gulf of Mexico that lacks riverine inputs but has been suspected to receive significant SGD. We observed persistent salinity gradients between the east and west ends of the lagoon and the pass connecting it to the Gulf of Mexico. Covariance between salinity in the lagoon and the groundwater tracer 222Rn indicated that SGD was responsible for the salinity gradients and is the primary source of freshwater to the lagoon. Cluster analysis of 246 biweekly samples based on temperature, salinity, and two proxies of SGD revealed two hydrographic regimes with different drivers for nutrient inputs. In samples characterized by high discharge and low temperatures (generally December–April), total nitrogen (TN) was negatively correlated with salinity, while total phosphorus (TP) was positively correlated with temperature. Total nitrogen in the groundwater was very high (0.36–4.80 mM) while total phosphorus was relatively low (0.3–2.3 μM), consistent with SGD as the source of TN during the high-discharge periods. In periods with low discharge and higher temperatures (approx. May–November), TN and TP had strong positive correlations with temperature and are inferred to originate from benthic efflux. Seasonal changes in nutrient stoichiometry in the lagoon water column also indicate an alternation between low TN/TP sediments and high TN/TP groundwater as the primary sources of nitrogen in this system.  相似文献

Sediment and water quality were investigated in an artificial coastal lake (Saemangeum Lake, Korea) that was formed by constructing a 33-km long sea-dyke offshore from the mouths of two adjacent rivers, which discharge into the Yellow Sea. Sediment showed drastic increases in fine fraction (silt and clay) after the dyke construction. TN, TP, and OC contents in the sediment showed the similar spatial variation to that of fine fraction. A mixing model indicated benthic fluxes of nutrients such as PO4, NH4, and SiO2, which were considerably elevated during the summer monsoon season. It is revealed that this phenomenon was associated with the development of strong salinity stratification, elevated water temperature, and increased groundwater discharge. However, a change in the sedimentation environment due to dyke construction is suggested as the primary reason for the enhanced benthic fluxes.  相似文献

Benthic and Pelagic Primary Production in Different Nutrient Regimes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Benthic flora can contribute significantly to gross primary production (GPP) of shallow coastal waters where light reaches the sea bottom. We quantified and compared benthic and pelagic GPP along nutrient gradients in time and space in the shallow estuary, Limfjorden, Denmark, based on monitoring data combined with historical information. Limfjorden experienced a shift from a pristine, benthic-dominated clear water regime with high total GPP in the early twentieth century to a eutrophic, plankton-dominated regime still with high total GPP in the 1980s when nutrient loadings peaked. Recent reductions in nutrient loadings reduced pelagic GPP, particularly in spring, but water clarity and benthic GPP did not increase correspondingly, so total GPP declined. The most nutrient-rich basins have remained plankton-dominated, with benthic vegetation constrained to shallow waters. The results support existing evidence that total GPP of shallow coastal areas does not increase systematically with eutrophication. Furthermore, the results suggest that total GPP may decline temporarily during oligotrophication as pelagic GPP declines, while feedback mechanisms delay or prevent restoration to a state with benthic dominance of GPP.  相似文献

Seasonal succession and composition of both attached and free-living bacterial communities were studied in subtropical estuarine and coastal waters with contrasting hydrographic conditions. A higher abundance of attached bacteria was recovered in the estuarine waters containing high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) resulting from the freshwater discharge in the adjacent Pearl River, and Proteobacteria, including ??-, ??-, and ??-groups, predominated the attached community at both stations. Free-living bacterial communities at both stations showed higher diversity and lower seasonality than their attached counterparts, and ??-Proteobacteria accounted for the highest proportion at both stations. Redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that, in addition to the obvious temperature effects, DOC and microphytoplankton (>20???m Chl a) drive the temporal variation of attached bacteria at the estuarine and coastal stations, respectively. On the other hand, picophytoplankton (<2???m Chl a) and dissolved oxygen concentration explained most of the free-living bacterial community succession at the estuarine station, while those at the coastal station were associated with micro- and picoplankton (Chl a fractions of <2 and >20???m). These findings suggest that temperature and bottom?Cup effects play a more important role for the spatial?Ctemporal variations of both attached and free-living bacterial communities in the subtropical estuarine and coastal waters.  相似文献

Complex links between the top-down and bottom-up forces that structure communities can be disrupted by anthropogenic alterations of natural habitats. We used relative abundance and stable isotopes to examine changes in epifaunal food webs in seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) beds following 6 months of experimental nutrient addition at two sites in Florida Bay (USA) with different ambient fertility. At a eutrophic site, nutrient addition did not strongly affect food web structure, but at a nutrient-poor site, enrichment increased the abundances of crustacean epiphyte grazers, and the diets of these grazers became more varied. Benthic grazers did not change in abundance but shifted their diet away from green macroalgae + associated epiphytes and towards an opportunistic seagrass (Halodule wrightii) that occurred only in nutrient addition treatments. Benthic predators did not change in abundance, but their diets were more varied in enriched plots. Food chain length was short and unaffected by site or nutrient treatment, but increased food web complexity in enriched plots was suggested by increasingly mixed diets. Strong bottom-up modifications of food web structure in the nutrient-limited site and the limited top-down influences of grazers on seagrass epiphyte biomass suggest that, in this system, the bottom-up role of nutrient enrichment can have substantial impacts on community structure, trophic relationships, and, ultimately, the productivity values of the ecosystem.  相似文献

浙江桃花岛碱性和普陀山铝质A型花岗岩副矿物对比研究   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
浙江舟山群岛的桃花岛和普陀山分别出露有大片中国东部沿海典型的燕山期碱性和铝质A型花岗岩,二者的岩石化学和主要造岩矿物存在明显差别。利用电子探针进行的测试分析表明,它们在副矿物组合及副矿物特征方面的差异也很显著:桃花岛碱性A型花岗岩中副矿物组合为富钍锆石、褐帘石、硅钛铈矿、钛磁铁矿和富锰钛铁矿;普陀山铝质A型花岗岩中的副矿物组合为贫钍锆石、富钍独居石、磁铁矿、金红石和红钛锰矿。二者更可从单颗粒矿物(特别是锆石)的成份和内部结构上加以区分。这些副矿物上的差异暗示了两类A型花岗岩的源区成分、结晶环境和物理化学特征存在明显不同:(1)碱性A型花岗岩的源岩相对较多地包含了来自较深部的地幔组分岩浆;(2)碱性A型花岗岩形成的温度相对较高,而铝质A型花岗岩结晶阶段的氧逸度较高;(3)碱度和磷活度的差异也是导致一些副矿物种类结晶差异的关键因素。  相似文献

距现代海岸25 km处的渤海湾西北岸宁河县兴坨H1孔(孔深28.0m)的介形类研究表明,可划分为7个组合层段(目下而上):Ⅰ-纯净小玻璃介组合(28.0~16.0m);Ⅱ-凹陷中华美花介-东台新单角介组合(16.0~9.0 m);Ⅲ-东台新单角介凹陷中华美花介-布氏威契曼介组合(9.0~4.5 m);Ⅳ-凹陷中华美花介-丰满陈氏介组合(4.5~2.5 m);V-丰满陈氏介-凹陷中华美花介组合(2.5~1.6m);Ⅵ丰满陈氏介-滨海弯贝介组合(1.6~0.5m);Ⅶ-玛纳斯土星介-布氏土星介组合(0.5~0m).通过对环境分析,认为渤海湾西北海岸自全新世以来古环境变化经历了一个完整的海侵序列,即自16.0 m向上至地表,从海进到海退为一个完整的沉积旋回.  相似文献

利用江苏和山东地区70个农田和非农田表土样品研究不同土地类型的花粉特征,为使用孢粉作为研究手段分析古代农业提供重要参考资料。结果表明所有植被类型的花粉谱均以草本花粉为主,但是含量明显不同,表现为农田>荒地>林地。其中禾本科谷物类型含量的变化最大,农田最高达41%,荒地高于11%,林地低于8%。谷物类禾本科花粉传播距离很短,其百分含量在10~20m内急剧衰减至27.6%,500m以外降低至20%以下;十字花科花粉也有相似的变化规律。藜科花粉对农田和荒地具有同等指示意义,可能与人类活动强度与方式有关。中华卷柏含量增加表明人类活动加强。油菜、水稻、小麦和玉米等谷物类花粉产量或者在土壤中保存存在差异:十字花科>玉米型禾本科>水稻型禾本科>小麦型禾本科。降趋势对应分析(DCA)结果表明,通过花粉相对百分含量,可以较好地区分水田、麦田和非农田,但油稻田与麦稻田、荒地与林地难以区分。  相似文献

In situ benthic flux chamber experiments were performed during late austral spring and early summer of 1996 at eleven nearshore locations in the southern Patos Lagoon, Brazil. The Patos Lagoon is the largest lagoonal system in South America and is a very important nursery ground for local fin fish and shell fish fisheries. These are the first benthic flux measurements made in Patos Lagoon and they suggest that remineralizationwithin the sediments may dominate the recycling of organic matter and nutrients in thelagoon. Measured oxygen benthic fluxes (45–160 mmol m-2 d-1) are sufficientto remineralize reported mean water column carbon fixation while phosphate and fixednitrogen benthic fluxes (-0.4–2 and -1.1–4.2 mmol m-2 d-1, respectively)are sufficient to supply 100% and 25% of the required water column nutrient demand,respectively. Although of limited areal and temporal coverage, these initial studiesdemonstrate that sediments play a major role in the metabolism and nutrient cyclingwithin the Patos Lagoon Estuary and that future studies of lagoonal biogeochemistrymust consider exchange with the bottom.  相似文献

We investigated the dissolved oxygen metabolism of the Curonian Lagoon (Baltic Sea) to assess the relative contributions of pelagic and benthic processes to the development of transient hypoxic conditions in shallow water habitats. Metabolism measurements along with the remote sensing-derived estimates of spatial variability in chlorophyll a were used to evaluate the risk of hypoxia at the whole lagoon level. Our data demonstrate that cyanobacterial blooms strongly inhibit light penetration, resulting in net heterotrophic conditions in which pelagic oxygen demand exceeds benthic oxygen demand by an order of magnitude. The combination of bloom conditions and reduced vertical mixing during calm periods resulted in oxygen depletion of bottom waters and greater sediment nutrient release. The peak of reactive P regeneration (nearly 30 μmol m?2 h?1) coincided with oxygen depletion in the water column, and resulted in a marked drop of the inorganic N:P ratio (from >40 to <5, as molar). Our results suggest a strong link between cyanobacterial blooms, pelagic respiration, hypoxia, and P regeneration, which acts as a feedback in sustaining algal blooms through internal nutrient cycling. Meteorological data and satellite-derived maps of chlorophyll a were used to show that nearly 70 % of the lagoon surface (approximately 1,000 km2) is prone to transient hypoxia development when blooms coincide with low wind speed conditions.  相似文献

通过对现代黄河三角洲地区YRD-1101钻孔的沉积地层研究和孢粉分析,认为该地区1.9 Ma以来孢粉组合代表的植被面貌自下而上表现为:针叶阔叶混交林—灌丛草甸→落叶针叶—阔叶混交林→落叶阔叶林→常绿阔叶落叶林→针叶阔叶混交林→落叶阔叶混交林→针叶落叶混交林及灌丛草甸→落叶阔叶混交林及林下灌丛。YRD-1101钻孔沉积特征变化显著,孢粉组合波动频繁。第四纪期间存在3次大的气候拐点,分别发生在0.75 Ma,0.125 Ma和9.1 ka,气候整体表现为温度逐渐上升、湿度逐渐升高的特点。特别是晚更新世以来气候趋于温暖湿润,MIS2陆相沉积阶段气候短暂转为凉爽干燥,海平面下降,植被以耐干旱草地灌丛植被扩张为特点;全新世阶段气温升高、湿度增加,海平面上升,植被以木本植物再次扩张、蕨类和藻类增加为特点。这一趋势与我国第四纪海侵地层分布及范围一致。  相似文献

Based on in situ microprofiles, chamber incubations and eddy covariance measurements, we investigated the benthic carbon mineralization and nutrient regeneration in a ~65-m-deep sedimentation basin of Loch Etive, UK. The sediment hosted a considerable amount of infauna that was dominated by the brittle star A. filiformis. The numerous burrows were intensively irrigated enhancing the benthic in situ O2 uptake by ~50 %, and inducing highly variable redox conditions and O2 distribution in the surface sediment as also documented by complementary laboratory-based planar optode measurements. The average benthic O2 exchange as derived by chamber incubations and the eddy covariance approach were similar (14.9 ± 2.5 and 13.1 ± 9.0 mmol m?2 day?1) providing confidence in the two measuring approaches. Moreover, the non-invasive eddy approach revealed a flow-dependent benthic O2 flux that was partly ascribed to enhanced ventilation of infauna burrows during periods of elevated flow rates. The ratio in exchange rates of ΣCO2 and O2 was close to unity, confirming that the O2 uptake was a good proxy for the benthic carbon mineralization in this setting. The infauna activity resulted in highly dynamic redox conditions that presumably facilitated an efficient degradation of both terrestrial and marine-derived organic material. The complex O2 dynamics of the burrow environment also concurrently stimulated nitrification and coupled denitrification rates making the sediment an efficient sink for bioavailable nitrogen. Furthermore, bioturbation mediated a high efflux of dissolved phosphorus and silicate. The study documents a high spatial and temporal variation in benthic solute exchange with important implications for benthic turnover of organic carbon and nutrients. However, more long-term in situ investigations with like approaches are required to fully understand how environmental events and spatio-temporal variations interrelate to the overall biogeochemical functioning of coastal sediments.  相似文献

Strong benthic–pelagic coupling is an important characteristic of shallow coastal marine ecosystems. Building upon a rich history of benthic metabolism data, we measured oxygen uptake and nutrient fluxes across the sediment–water interface along a gradient of water column primary production in Narragansett Bay, RI (USA). Despite the strong gradients seen in water column production, sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and benthic nutrient fluxes did not exhibit a clear spatial pattern. Some of our sites had been studied in the 1970s and 1980s and thus allowed historical comparison. At these sites, we found that SOD and benthic fluxes have not changed uniformly throughout Narragansett Bay. In the uppermost portion of the bay, the Providence River Estuary, we observed a significant decrease in dissolved inorganic phosphorus fluxes which we attribute to management interventions. At another upper bay site, we observed significant declines in SOD and dissolved inorganic nitrogen fluxes which may be linked to climate-induced decreases in water column primary production and shifts in bloom phenology. In the 1970s, benthic nutrient regeneration supplied 50% to over 200% of the N and P needed to support primary production by phytoplankton. Summer nutrient regeneration in the Providence River Estuary and Upper bay now may only supply some 5–30% of the N and 3–20% of the P phytoplankton demand.  相似文献

对气候敏感区德令哈盆地尕海湖DG03孔岩芯的矿物学分析表明,DG03孔岩芯的矿物主要包括石英、斜长石、微斜长石、绿泥石、伊利石、方解石、文石、白云石、石膏及石盐等。岩芯记录了尕海湖约11 ka以来(AMS 14C年龄)的古环境变化。根据矿物、碳酸盐含量及岩性的变化,整个岩芯可划分为三个部分:Ⅰ. 约11 ka~10 ka BP,晚冰期末期;Ⅱ. 10 ka~4 ka BP,全新世早中期;Ⅲ.4 ka至今,全新世晚期。矿物组合表明,自晚冰期以来,尕海湖先后经历了湖泊演化的逆向和正向演化阶段,即尕海湖先后经历了晚冰期的干冷气候,早全新世的暖干气候,中全新世的暖湿气候以及晚全新世以来的逐渐干冷的气候。岩性分析还表明,尕海湖沉积环境复杂,存在多种微相沉积。  相似文献

Northeastern US salt marshes face multiple co-stressors, including accelerating rates of relative sea level rise (RSLR), elevated nutrient inputs, and low sediment supplies. In order to evaluate how marsh surface elevations respond to such factors, we used surface elevation tables (SETs) and surface elevation pins to measure changes in marsh surface elevation in two eastern Long Island Sound salt marshes, Barn Island and Mamacoke marshes. We compare marsh elevation change at these two systems with recent rates of RSLR and find evidence of differences between the two sites; Barn Island is maintaining its historic rate of elevation gain (2.3?±?0.24 mm year?1 from 2003 to 2013) and is no longer keeping pace with RSLR, while Mamacoke shows evidence of a recent increase in rates (4.2?±?0.52 mm year?1 from 1994 to 2014) to maintain its elevation relative to sea level. In addition to data on short-term elevation responses at these marshes, both sites have unusually long and detailed data on historic vegetation species composition extending back more than half a century. Over this study period, vegetation patterns track elevation change relative to sea levels, with the Barn Island plant community shifting towards those plants that are found at lower elevations and the Mamacoke vegetation patterns showing little change in plant composition. We hypothesize that the apparent contrasting trend in marsh elevation at the sites is due to differences in sediment availability, salinity, and elevation capital. Together, these two systems provide critical insight into the relationships between marsh elevation, high marsh plant community, and changing hydroperiods. Our results highlight that not all marshes in Southern New England may be responding to accelerated rates of RSLR in the same manner.  相似文献

Between 1991 and 2000, Boston Harbor, a bay–estuary in the northeast USA, experienced a decrease in loadings of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and particulate organic carbon (PC) of between ∼80% and ∼90%. The average concentrations of TN and TP in the harbor water column were decreased in linear proportion to the loadings. The changes to the chlorophyll-a (chl-a), PC, and bottom water DO concentrations were curvilinear relative to the loadings, with larger changes at low than high loadings. For TN and TP, the starts of the decreases in concentrations coincided with the starts of the decreases in loadings. For the three variables that showed curvilinear responses, the starts of the changes lagged by 2 to 3 years the starts of the decreases in TN loadings. Total suspended solid concentrations and water clarity in the harbor were unchanged. The study shows that for systems such as Boston Harbor, decreases in nutrient loadings will have quite different effects depending on the base loadings to the system.  相似文献

The distribution of mangrove biomass and forest structure along Shark River estuary in the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) has been correlated with elevated total phosphorus concentration in soils thought to be associated with storm events. The passage of Hurricane Wilma across Shark River estuary in 2005 allowed us to quantify sediment deposition and nutrient inputs in FCE mangrove forests associated with this storm event and to evaluate whether these pulsing events are sufficient to regulate nutrient biogeochemistry in mangrove forests of south Florida. We sampled the spatial pattern of sediment deposits and their chemical properties in mangrove forests along FCE sites in December 2005 and October 2006. The thickness (0.5 to 4.5 cm) of hurricane sediment deposits decreased with distance inland at each site. Bulk density, organic matter content, total nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations, and inorganic and organic P pools of hurricane sediment deposits differed from surface (0–10 cm) mangrove soils at each site. Vertical accretion resulting from this hurricane event was eight to 17 times greater than the annual accretion rate (0.30 ± 0.03 cm year−1) averaged over the last 50 years. Total P inputs from storm-derived sediments were equivalent to twice the average surface soil nutrient P density (0.19 mg cm−3). In contrast, total N inputs contributed 0.8 times the average soil nutrient N density (2.8 mg cm−3). Allochthonous mineral inputs from Hurricane Wilma represent a significant source of sediment to soil vertical accretion rates and nutrient resources in mangroves of southwestern Everglades. The gradient in total P deposition to mangrove soils from west to east direction across the FCE associated with this storm event is particularly significant to forest development due to the P-limited condition of this carbonate ecosystem. This source of P may be an important adaptation of mangrove forests in the Caribbean region to projected impacts of sea-level rise.  相似文献

Due to its ecological context, the Toulon bay represents a site of scientific interest to study temporal plankton distribution, particularly pico- and nanophytoplankton dynamics. A monthly monitoring was performed during a two-year cycle (October 2013–December 2015) at two coupled sampling sites, referred to as Little and Large bays, which had different morphometric characteristics and human pressures. Flow cytometry analyses highlighted the fact that pico- and nanophytoplankton were more abundant in the eutrophic Little bay. Furthermore, it evidenced two community structures across the Toulon bays: at times, a co-dominance of picoeukaryotes, nanoeukaryotes, Synechococcus 1-like cells and Prochlorococcus-like cells was found, and at other times, a Synechococcus 1-like dominated community existed. The alternation of one structure or the other can be explained by a combined action of temperature regime, nutrient conditions and degree of contamination. This study showed that pico- and nanophytoplankton dynamics were mainly driven by temperature in both sites, as in other temperate Mediterranean regions. Thus, the community was mainly composed of picoeukaryotes and Prochlorococcus-like cells in the winter (<?15 °C), while it was dominated by Synechococcus 1-like cells in the summer (>?20 °C). Additionally, the multiple human stressors in the Little bay seemed to affect the increase in abundance of Synechococcus 1-like cells as they were preferentially observed in the Large bay.  相似文献
