From the first Voyager pictures, the shape of Mimas appears to be spherical within a few percents. If this result is confirmed, either Mimas's density is higher than 2 g cm–3, or this small satellite has a core-mantle differentiated structure.  相似文献

An argument is given, based on considerations of moments of inertia and the equatorial location of the large crater Herschel, which implies that Mimas (one of the smallest satellites of the major planets) shows a high degree of internal differentiation (with a silicate-type core but a mantle with a density rather greater than for water-ice alone). Some consequences of these arguments are adduced and possible compositions of the mantle considered.  相似文献

Tidal evolution of Mimas, Enceladus, and Dione   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Jennifer Meyer  Jack Wisdom 《Icarus》2008,193(1):213-223
The tidal evolution through several resonances involving Mimas, Enceladus, and/or Dione is studied numerically with an averaged resonance model. We find that, in the Enceladus-Dione 2:1 e-Enceladus type resonance, Enceladus evolves chaotically in the future for some values of k2/Q. Past evolution of the system is marked by temporary capture into the Enceladus-Dione 4:2 ee-mixed resonance. We find that the free libration of the Enceladus-Dione 2:1 e-Enceladus resonance angle of 1.5° can be explained by a recent passage of the system through a secondary resonance. In simulations with passage through the secondary resonance, the system enters the current Enceladus-Dione resonance close to tidal equilibrium and thus the equilibrium value of tidal heating of 1.1(18,000/QS) GW applies. We find that the current anomalously large eccentricity of Mimas can be explained by passage through several past resonances. In all cases, escape from the resonance occurs by unstable growth of the libration angle, sometimes with the help of a secondary resonance. Explanation of the current eccentricity of Mimas by evolution through these resonances implies that the Q of Saturn is below 100,000. Though the eccentricity of Enceladus can be excited to moderate values by capture in the Mimas-Enceladus 3:2 e-Enceladus resonance, the libration amplitude damps and the system does not escape. Thus past occupancy of this resonance and consequent tidal heating of Enceladus is excluded. The construction of a coherent history places constraints on the allowed values of k2/Q for the satellites.  相似文献

Voyager imaging observations provide new photometric data on Saturn's satellites at large phase angles (up to 133° in the case of Mimas) not observable from Earth. Significant new results include the determination of phase integrals ranging from 0.7 in the case of Rhea to 0.9 for Enceladus. For Enceladus we find an average geometric albedo pv = 1.04 ± 0.15 and Bond albedo of 0.9 ± 0.1. The data indicate an orbital lightcurve with an amplitude of 0.2 mag, the trailing side being the brighter. For Mimas, the lightcurve amplitude is probably less than 0.1 mag. The value of the geometric albedo of Mimas reported here, pv = 0.77 ± 0.15 (corresponding to a mean opposition magnitude V0 = +12.5) is definitely higher than the currently accepted value of about 0.5. For Dione, the Voyager data show a well-defined orbital lightcurve of amplitude about 0.6 mag, with the leading hemisphere brighter than the trailing one.  相似文献

The Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) acquired 282, 258, and 513 high-resolution images (<800 m/pixel) of Mimas, Tethys, and Iapetus, respectively, during two close flyby of Tethys and Iapetus and eight non-targeted flybys between 2004 and 2007. We combined these images with lower-resolution Cassini images and others taken by Voyager cameras to produce high-resolution semi-controlled mosaics of Mimas, Tethys, and Iapetus. These global mosaics are the baseline for high-resolution Mimas and Iapetus maps and a Tethys atlas. The nomenclature used in these maps was proposed by the Cassini imaging team and was approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The two maps and the atlas are available to the public through the Imaging Team's website [http://ciclops.org/maps] and the Planetary Data System [http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov].  相似文献

In the present work, we study the stability of hypothetical satellites that are coorbital with Enceladus and Mimas. We performed numerical simulations of 50 particles around the triangular Lagrangian equilibrium points of Enceladus and Mimas taking into account the perturbation of Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Titan and the oblateness of Saturn. All particles remain on tadpole orbits after 10 000 yr of integration. Since in the past the orbit of Enceladus and Mimas expanded due to the tidal perturbation, we also simulated the system with Enceladus and Mimas at several different values of semimajor axes. The results show that in general the particles remain on tadpole orbits. The exceptions occur when Enceladus is at semimajor axes that correspond to 6:7, 5:6 and 4:5 resonances with Mimas. Therefore, if Enceladus and Mimas had satellites librating around their Lagrangian triangular points in the past, they would have been removed if Enceladus crossed one of these first-order resonances with Mimas.  相似文献

We study the size and shape of low-density regions in the local Universe, which we identify in the smoothed density field of the PSCz flux-limited IRAS galaxy catalogue. After quantifying the systematic biases that enter the detection of voids using our data set and method, we identify, using a smoothing length of 5  h −1 Mpc, 14 voids within 80  h −1 Mpc (having volumes 103  h −3 Mpc3) and, using a smoothing length of 10  h −1 Mpc, eight voids within 130  h −1 Mpc (having volumes  8×103 h−3 Mpc3)  . We study the void size distribution and morphologies and find that there is roughly an equal number of prolate and oblate-like spheroidal voids. We compare the measured PSCz void shape and size distributions with those expected in six different cold dark matter (CDM) models and find that only the size distribution can discriminate between models. The models preferred by the PSCz data are those with intermediate values of   σ 8(≃0.83)  , independent of cosmology.  相似文献

Observations of mean or average pulse profiles and their polarization give us much information on the shape of pulsar beams. The observed polarization variations, profile symmetry and frequency dependence of profile shape strongly suggest that the emission beam is conical and emitted from the vicinity of a magnetic pole. Central and outer parts of the beam have somewhat different properties, but the evidence is that they are emitted by the same basic mechanism. Recent observations suggest that the highly polarized pulse components seen in young pulsars may be emitted at a large angle to the magnetic axis.  相似文献

The response by a gaseous disc to perturbations is investigated. Spectral analysis of the resulting pattern indicates that information about the nature of the perturber is maintained only if the perturbation is strong.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

Spectral maps of Mimas’ daytime thermal emission show a previously unobserved thermal anomaly on Mimas’ surface. A sharp V-shaped boundary, centered at 0°N and 180°W, separates relatively warm daytime temperatures from a cooler anomalous region occupying low- to mid-latitudes on the leading hemisphere. Subsequent observations show the anomalous region is also warmer than its surroundings at night, indicating high thermal inertia. Thermal inertia in the anomalous region is , compared to < outside the anomaly. Bolometric Bond albedos are similar between the two regions, in the range 0.49-0.70. The mapped portion of the thermally anomalous region coincides in shape and location to a region of high-energy electron deposition from Saturn’s magnetosphere, which also has unusually high near-UV reflectance. It is therefore likely that high-energy electrons, which penetrate Mimas’ surface to the centimeter depths probed by diurnal temperature variations, also alter the surface texture, dramatically increasing its thermal inertia.  相似文献

The shape of pulsar radio beams   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using all available multicomponent radio pulse profiles for pulsars with medium to long periods and good polarization data, we have constructed a two-dimensional image of the mean radio beam shape. This shows a peak near the centre of the beam but is otherwise relatively uniform with only mild enhancements in a few regions. This result supports the patchy beam model for emission beams, in which the mean beam shape represents the properties of the emission mechanism and observed pulse components result from emission sources distributed randomly across the beam.  相似文献

Nearly 1000 magnetopause crossings from HEOS-2, HEOS-1, OGO-5 and 5 IMP space-craft covering most of the northern and part of the southern dayside and near-Earth tail magnetopause (X >?15 RE) have been used to perform a detailed study of the three-dimensional shape and location of the magnetopause. The long-term influence of the solar wind conditions on the average magnetopause geometry has been reduced by normalising the radial distances of the observed magnetopause crossings to an average dynamical solar wind pressure. Best-fit ellipsoids have been obtained to represent the average magnetopause surface in geocentric solar ecliptic (GSE) and (as a function of tilt angle) in solar magnetic (SM) coordinates. Average geocentric distances to the magnetopause for the 1972–1973 solar wind conditions (density 9.4 cm?3, velocity 450 km s?1) are 8.8 RE in the sunward direction, 14.7 RE in the dusk direction, 13.4 RE in the dawn direction and 13.7 RE in the direction normal to the ecliptic plane. The magnetopause surface is tilted by 6.6° ± 2° in a direction consistent with that expected from the aberration effect of the radial solar wind. Our data suggest that the solar wind plasma density and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation affect the distance to the polar magnetopause, larger distances corresponding to higher plasma density and southward fields. Our best-fit magnetopause surface shows larger geocentric distances than predicted by the model of Choe et al. [Planet Space Sci. 21, 485 (1973).] normalised to the same solar wind pressure.  相似文献

The shape of the sunspot cycle   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The temporal behavior of a sunspot cycle, as described by the International sunspot numbers, can be represented by a simple function with four parameters: starting time, amplitude, rise time, and asymmetry. Of these, the parameter that governs the asymmetry between the rise to maximum and the fall to minimum is found to vary little from cycle to cycle and can be fixed at a single value for all cycles. A close relationship is found between rise time and amplitude which allows for a representation of each cycle by a function containing only two parameters: the starting time and the amplitude. These parameters are determined for the previous 22 sunspot cycles and examined for any predictable behavior. A weak correlation is found between the amplitude of a cycle and the length of the previous cycle. This allows for an estimate of the amplitude accurate to within about 30% right at the start of the cycle. As the cycle progresses, the amplitude can be better determined to within 20% at 30 months and to within 10% at 42 months into the cycle, thereby providing a good prediction both for the timing and size of sunspot maximum and for the behavior of the remaining 7–12 years of the cycle. Theoretical consideration and observations by other authors indicate that small asteroids are capable of maintaining irregular shapes, notably the shape of a cigar and even of a dumb-bell. This paper presents a model which describes the changes in the shape of an asteroid due to collisions of smaller objects (meteoroids) with the asteroid. The following assumptions must be approximately valid: (1) collisions are not uncommon; (2) collisions between a (relatively) large asteroid and small objects (meteroids) are more common than collisions between asteroids; (3) the cumulative probability of the collision of a meteoroid on a point on the surface of an asteroid is proportional to the zenith angle of the horizon as seen by that point; (4) obliquities of all but the major asteroids are random, so that there is not a preferred side on which collisions occur; (5) a considerable percentage of collision ejecta achieves escape velocity; and (6) the rate of erosion of each point on the surface of an asteroid is proportional to the cumulative probability of collision.Generalized conclusions that are obtained from the computer running of the model indicate that both cigars and dumb-bells are possible outcomes. Sharp corners are smoothed away, the radius of curvature of rounded surfaces increases to the point of going from convexity to concavity, and flat surfaces develop into gentle concavities.Collisions of an asteroid with an object of sufficient size such that the impact causes the breakage of the asteroid or the formation of a large crater, are not discussed in this paper. Previous work, however, suggests that the crater will undergo geomorphological changes of different geometry than a similar crater on the Moon.  相似文献

Profiles of the 4430 band are calculated for resonant absorbers distributed within graphite particles, silicate particles and solid H2 grains. The sizes of grains adopted are those which give agreement with the interstellar extinction. Only in the latter two cases can satisfactory agreement be obtained with recent observational data.  相似文献

We estimate the distribution of intrinsic shapes of APM galaxy clusters from the distribution of their apparent shapes. We measure the projected cluster ellipticities using two alternative methods. The first method is based on moments of the discrete galaxy distribution while the second is based on moments of the smoothed galaxy distribution. We study the performance of both methods using Monte Carlo cluster simulations covering the range of APM cluster distances and including a random distribution of background galaxies. We find that the first method suffers from severe systematic biases, whereas the second is more reliable. After excluding clusters dominated by substructure and quantifying the systematic biases in our estimated shape parameters, we recover a corrected distribution of projected ellipticities. We use the non-parametric kernel method to estimate the smooth apparent ellipticity distribution, and numerically invert a set of integral equations to recover the corresponding distribution of intrinsic ellipticities under the assumption that the clusters are either oblate or prolate spheroids. The prolate spheroidal model fits the APM cluster data best.  相似文献

Europa, the smallest of the Galilean satellites, has a young icy surface and most likely contains an internal ocean. The primary objective of possible future missions to Europa is the unambiguous detection and characterization of a subsurface ocean. The thickness of the overlying icy shell provides important information on the thermal evolution of the satellite and on the interaction between the ocean and the surface, the latter being fundamental for astrobiology. However, the thickness is not well known, and estimates range from several hundred of meters to some ten of kilometers. Here, we investigate the use of libration (rotation variation) observations to study the interior structure of Europa and in particular its icy shell. A dynamical libration model is developed, which includes gravitational coupling between the icy shell and the heavy solid interior. The amplitude of the main libration signal at 3.55 days (the orbital period) is shown to depend on Europa's shape and structure. Models of the interior structure of Europa are constructed and the equatorial flattening of the internal layers, which are key parameters for the libration, are calculated by assuming that Europa is in hydrostatic equilibrium. Europa's flattened shape is assumed to be due to rotation and permanent tides, and we extend the classical Radau equation for rotationally flattened bodies to include also tidal deformation. We show that the presence of an ocean increases the amplitude of libration by about 10%, depending mainly on the thickness of the icy shell. Therefore, libration observations offer possibility of detection of a subsurface ocean in Europa and estimation of the thickness of its overlying icy shell.  相似文献

The magnetostatic equilibrium of a coronal loop in response to slow twisting of the photospheric footpoints is investigated. A numerical code is used to solve the full non-linear 2-D axisymmetric problem, extending earlier linearised models which assume weak twist and large aspect ratio. It is found that often the core of the loop tends to contract into a region of strong longitudinal field while the outer part expands. It is shown that, away from the photospheric footpoints, the equilibrium is very well approximated by a straight 1-D cylindrical model. This idea is used to develop a simple method for prescribing the footpoint angular displacement and calculating the equilibrium.  相似文献
