Laboratory tests were conducted on a reddish-brown lateritic soil treated with up to 12 % bagasse ash to assess its suitability in waste containment barriers applications. Soil samples were prepared using four compaction energies (i.e. reduced Proctor, standard Proctor, West African Standard or ‘intermediate’ and modified Proctor) at ?2, 0, 2 and 4 % moulding water content of the optimum moisture content (OMC). Index properties, hydraulic conductivity (k), volumetric shrinkage and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests were performed. Overall acceptable zones under which the material is suitable as a barrier material were obtained. Results recorded showed improved index properties; hydraulic conductivity and UCS with bagasse ash treatment up to 8 % at the OMC. Volumetric shrinkage strain increased with higher bagasse ash treatment. Based on the overall acceptable zone obtained, an 8 % optimal bagasse ash treatment of the natural lateritic soil makes it suitable for use in waste containment barrier application.  相似文献

This paper investigates the mechanisms controlling Sb-leaching from fresh Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash, as well as the possibilities of controlling the extent of Sb-leaching by the addition of sorbent minerals to the bottom ash. In alkaline MSWI bottom ash Sb is possibly incorporated in ettringite-like minerals. When weathering/carbonation continues the ettringite dissolves resulting in a mobilisation of Sb. At neutral pH values the leaching of Sb is likely to be controlled by sorption to amorphous Fe/Al-(hydr)oxides. It has been shown that Sb can effectively be removed from solution if salts of Fe(III) or Al(III) are added to the bottom ash. This addition of Fe(III)/Al(III)-salts leads to (1) the in-situ precipitation of Fe/Al-hydroxides and sorption/coprecipitation of contaminants such as Sb, and (2) a lower bottom ash pH and thus an increased affinity of oxyanions for sorption to Fe/Al-(hydr)oxides.  相似文献

Coal-fired power plants produce energy and many by-products (unburned carbon, fly ash, and bottom ash) that are normally stored in permitted ponds and landfills. When the storage facility fills to capacity, it is necessary to haul material off-site for disposal, construct a new storage facility, or find a use for some of the material. Because certain criteria must be met to successfully beneficiate the ash, mapping the ash reserve provides data that shows where the most promising recovery sites will be.The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) in conjunction with Western Kentucky Energy (WKE) and the US Department of Energy are constructing an ash beneficiation plant to recover high quality fuel and lightweight aggregate from the ash ponds at WKE's Coleman Station in Hawesville, KY. To determine the locations of the most productive areas, an extensive sampling and mapping project is underway. An amphibious ATV-mounted hydraulic drill has been employed to take core samples throughout the pond. These samples are then evaluated for particle size distribution, carbon content, chemical and leaching properties. With this information as well as each drill-hole's GPS coordinates and aerial photographs of the plant site, digital maps have been produced showing trends of deposition of material in the pond. Using a Geographical Information System to compile the data, the feasibility of removing ash for beneficial re-use can assessed.  相似文献

Application of organic petrology and geochemistry to coal waste studies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Coal wastes produced during mining activities are commonly deposited in nearby dumps. These wastes mostly composed of minerals and variable amounts (usually 20-30%) of organic matter start to weather immediately after deposition. Oxidation of the organic matter can lead to self heating and self combustion as a result of organic and mineral matter transformations. The degree of alteration depends on the properties of the wastes, i.e., the maceral and microlithotype composition of the organic matter and its rank.Alteration of wastes also depends on the heating history, i.e., the rate of heating, final heating temperature, duration of heating, and the degree of air access. Although air is probably necessary to initiate and drive the heating processes, these usually take place under relatively oxygen depleted conditions. With slow heating, color of organic matter particles changes, irregular cracks and oxidation rims develop around edges and cracks, and bitumen is expelled. As a result, massive and detritic isotropic and strongly altered organic matter forms. On the other hand, higher heating rates cause the formation of devolatilization pores, oxidation rims around these pores and along cracks, vitrinite-bands-mantling particles, and bitumen expulsions.Organic compounds generated from the wastes include n-alkanes, iso-alkanes, alkylcyclohexanes, acyclic isoprenoids, mainly pristane, phytane and, in some cases, farnesane, sesquiterpanes, tri- and tetracyclic diterpanes, tri- and pentacyclic triterpanes, and steranes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (mostly with two- to five rings, rarely six rings), and phenols. The compounds formed change during the heating history. The fact that phenols are found in dumps where heating has not yet been completed, but are absent in those where heating ceased previously suggests the presence of water washing. The organic compounds formed may migrate within the dumps. However, when they migrate out of the dumps, they become a hazard to environment.This paper is a review on transformations of organic matter (both maceral composition and reflectance and chemical composition) in coal wastes deposited in coal waste dumps. Immediately after deposition the wastes are exposed to weathering conditions and sometimes undergo self heating processes.  相似文献

湾河粉煤灰堆场位于黔中典型的峰丛洼地中,存在严重的堆场废水渗漏。为确切评价其渗漏特征,在堆场及其周围开展了相应的水文地质勘探及连通试验。结果表明,堆场地下水位低于邻近的波玉河水位6.5 m,堆场废水不可能向波玉河发生渗漏,而是越过灰场北西侧峰丛地带沿F1断层向西距堆场约3 km以外的邻谷的S2潭、S3泉渗漏。渗漏点为堆场洼地中分布的串珠状落水洞,渗漏为裂隙管道型,地下水流速为57.2 m/h,渗漏水动力条件复杂。堆场废水污染渗漏治理不仅要解决堆场中串珠状落水洞的防渗,而且要保证堆场北侧山体包气带岩溶的防渗,因此建议采用水平防渗方案。   相似文献

This paper reports the adsorption of phosphate ions on coal, charcoal, and coal ash. The influences of factors such as contact time, and initial adsorbate concentration have been studied. Adsorption of phosphate ions on virgin coal was significant compared to charcoal, coal and coal ash evacuated at 200°C. The significant adsorption capability of coal is due to the porosity as well as due to organic carbon and inorganic elements present in coal. The evacuation of coal proved to be ineffective in enhancing its capability for phosphate ions retention. The adsorption behaviors of all the three adsorbent used was conformed using Freundlich’s adsorption model. The results suggest that coal could be used as an efficient adsorbent for removing phosphate ions from wastewater.  相似文献

This study evaluates Greek peat and coal samples for applications in the agricultural/horticultural sector and assesses the suitability of a certain peat/coal either as soil conditioner or as raw material for manufacturing organic fertilizers.Twenty-six samples of different rank ranging from peat to subbituminous coal obtained from several Greek peat/coal deposits, were studied. The laboratory tests included: a) pH and electrical conductivity (EC) determinations, as well as proximate, ultimate and maceral analyses, in order to characterize the samples, b) major and trace element analyses of both the total and the easily exchangeable fractions (EEF), in order to assess the phytotoxicity effect, c) cation exchange capacity (CEC) determination in mixtures of the samples (5 wt.%) with a certain soil (95 wt.%), in order to evaluate the peat/coal impact, and d) the determination of the contents of humic substances (HS), as well as of carboxylic and phenolic groups.The majority of the samples reveal moderate to high ash yields (16–80 wt.%), a slightly acidic to neutral character and electrical conductivity ranging from 100–2500 μS/cm. Concerning the environmental impact of the sensitive trace elements, which might be leached, As, Mn, Ni and Sr show relatively strong mobilization in some samples, although severe impacts are not expected. The soil's CEC is generally improved, although it remains at moderate levels. The most interesting aspect is the humic acids content, which ranges between 9.6 and 52.2 wt.% on a dry basis, exceeding 25 wt.% for most of the samples. The obtained results enable an initial correlation among the different parameters and a rating of the samples according to their suitability for soil-amelioration agents.  相似文献

The bulk of fly ash (an inorganic waste of coal-fired power generation) produced is deposited in disposal areas where it needs to be revegetated. The effects of addition of three conventional organic amendments (biosolids, poultry manure, green waste compost), or poultry manure-derived biochar, to coal fly ash (at two rates) on some key chemical, physical and microbial properties and on growth of Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) was studied in a laboratory incubation/greenhouse study. Addition of all amendments, including biochar, increased concentrations of extractable Mg, K, Na and P and CEC(pH 7.0). Additions of poultry manure, and particularly biosolids, also greatly increased levels of extractable NH4 + and NO3 -N. Addition of biosolids, green waste compost and biochar resulted in a decrease in macroporosity, a concomitant increase in mesoporosity and, at the high rate of addition, an increase in available water-holding capacity. Basal respiration was very low in fly ash and was increased by addition of all amendments; metabolic quotient was markedly greater in control than amended treatments. Biosolids, poultry manure and green waste compost additions all increased microbial biomass C. Growth of Rhodes grass was extremely low under unfertilized conditions in control, biochar and, to a lesser extent, green waste compost treatments but addition of poultry manure and the lower rate of biosolids resulted in large increases in yields. Although biochar additions increased extractable Ca, K, P, Cu, Zn and Mn, CEC, mesoporosity and water-holding capacity, they had a little or no stimulatory effect on the size of the soil microbial community, N fertility or plant growth. This was attributable to the lack of metabolisable C and an insignificant N-supplying capacity.  相似文献

Cellulose/SiO2 nanocomposite (CSNC) was successively prepared using a banana peel waste as a template for silica. X-rays diffraction confirmed the presence of both cellulosic and silica phases with the silica phase as the primary phase. Electron microscopes images showed a compact hexagonal morphology with an average particle size of 20 nm. The FTIR analysis ascertained the presence of hydroxyl groups, and the thermal analysis showed the high thermal stability of CSNC. The sorption ability of CSNC for methylene blue was examined in both aqueous solutions and a real sample. The adsorption was followed by pseudo-second-order reaction and obeyed Langmuir isotherm. Calculated thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic, suggesting a chemisorption mode. The calculated adsorption capacity was 78.75 and 58.81 mg g?1 in aqueous dye solution and real sample, respectively, suggesting the applicability of CSNC for field uses. The correlation between the composite components and its performance is suggested to be investigated in the future by changing the type of agricultural waste as well as the nanooxide.  相似文献

Disposal of radioactive waste in the sea floor of fracture zones associated with the flanks of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge may be a satisfactory alternative to land disposal. Effective physiographic, sedimentary, chemical, and oceanographic barriers exist in these aseismic deep canyons, especially in the eastern Atlantic. In addition, the major producers of radioactive wastes are likely to be near the Atlantic Ocean. If such a disposal strategy is adopted, intensive study of the sedimentologic and oceanographic properties of oceanic fracture zones will be necessary.  相似文献

In certain areas, relatively large accumulations of liquid hydrocarbons have been attributed to coals. Evaluating the source rock potential of coal requires definition of both the generative potential (quantity and composition of generated hydrocarbons), and expulsion efficiency. Hydrous pyrolysis experiments were completed using Tertiary lignites (Ro < 0.35%) from North Dakota and the Far East to evaluate the source rock potential of coal. The North Dakota lignite is vitrinite-rich (93%) and liptinite-poor (3%); the Far East lignite is liptinite-rich (32% of total maceral content). These lignites have Hydrogen Index values of 123 and 483 mg HC/g OC, respectively. Differences in oil-pyrolysate yield, composition, and temperature of maximum pyrolysate yield from hydrous pyrolysis experiments for these two lignites are related to the type and amount of liptinite and vitrinite macerals. A maximum of 48 and 158 mg oil-pyrolysate/g OC is generated and expelled from the North Dakota and Far East lignites, respectively. Although these lignites consist predominantly of gas-prone vitrinitic components, their organic-rich nature can compensate for their poor convertibility to liquid hydrocarbons. The composition of these artificially generated oil-pyrolysates are similar to some non-marine oils, suggesting that this type of organic matter can be a significant contributor to many oils. Although the overall composition of the generated products from the two lignites is similar, the distribution of these products is significantly different. Homologous series of methyl ketones and alkyl benzenes have been identified in both oil-pyrolysates. Their presence and characteristic distribution suggest that microbial degradation occurred during the formation of these lignites. Although many coals generate significate amounts of liquid hydrocarbons that are similar to naturally occurring oils, poor explusion efficiency limits their source rock potential. Significant amounts of liquid products are assimilated by the vitrinitic matrix of most coals prior to expulsion, severely limiting the amount of petroleum available for migration and reservoir accumulation. However, adequate expulsion may occur in certain liptinite-rich coals or coals occurring in unique depositional settings.  相似文献

The need to obtain accurate, operator-independent data from small-scale laboratory flotation tests has become particularly apparent in the treatment of fine coal. The work described suggests a method for reducing operator dependency by removing the flotation froth uniformly. This is achieved using a perspex insert to change the geometry of the cell, by maintaining a constant pulp level height and by removing froth from the full width of the cell and at a fixed depth.A comparison is made between the modified cell and a conventional Denver cell by obtaining equilibrium and kinetic data for each cell from two independent operators.The comparison shows a reduction in the variability of the results obtained from the modified cell.  相似文献

Using a modified extraction procedure, the effect of pH on the leaching of selected elements from Ca-rich (Type C) power plant fly ash was studied. Continuous additions of acetic acid were used to maintain pH values of fly ash slurries at 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0 for 24 h and an additional set was leached at its natural pH (average 11.8) value. Analyses for Se, As, Ca, Cd, Cr, Fe, Na and Pb showed that the highest concentrations occur in the leachate at pH 4.0 and decline with increasing pH. Concentrations of Cr and Fe increased slightly between neutral and high pH. Arsenic, Cd, Cr, Pb and Se concentrations exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency's toxicity criteria at pH 4.0. Selenium was above its toxicity level at pH values near 7 but the other elements were below their respective toxicity levels near neutral pH. Because recent studies show adverse effects of Se on aquatic life at far lower concentrations than the current Environmental Protection Agency's standard, high-Ca, power plant fly ashes represent a potentially hazardous pollutant to surface and subsurface waters.  相似文献

A study of near surface sediments from the Dan River (southeastern USA) was conducted to assess the use of magnetic properties as proxies of coal ash after a recent spill. The watershed geology is diverse and potentially contributes magnetic minerals to riverbed sediment from diabase dikes in the Dan River Triassic Basin and from granitic gneiss outside the basin. Coal ash is heterogeneous, including aluminosilicate spheres, amorphous particles and carbonaceous rods and lacy particles. The magnetic fraction of ash from the failed storage pond is up to 17 wt% and is mostly composed of black spheres with maghemite and magnetite. Ash was detected in riverbed sediment from quiet water settings such as inside of meander bends, the confluence of tributary streams and near islands between the spill site and 20 miles downstream in the Schoolfield Reservoir, Danville, VA. The strong magnetic signal is detected above background in riverbed samples and is strongly positively correlated with total ash; elevated low field magnetic susceptibility (χ LF) is evident in samples with ≥ 12% ash content. Anhysteretic remanent magnetization and hysteresis parameters delineate native sediment, ash-bearing sediment, and diabase dikes. Between 20 and 70 miles downstream of the spill site, ash concentrations were either buried or too low due to dilution with native sediment to be detected with χ LF in riverbed samples.  相似文献

The coal seams of Sawang Colliery, East Bokaro Coalfields are bituminous to sub-bituminous in nature and categorized as high gaseous seams (degree II to degree III level). These seams have the potential for coal bed methane (CBM) and their maturity increases with increasing depth, as a result of enhanced pressure-temperature conditions in the underground. The vitrinite maceral group composition of the investigated coal seams ranges from 62.50–83.15%, whereas the inertinite content varies from 14.93–36.81%. The liptinite content varies from 0.66% to 3.09%. The maximum micro-pores are confined within the vitrinite group of macerals. The coal seams exhibit vitrinite reflectance values (Ro% calculated) from 0.94% (sample CG-97) to 1.21% (sample CG-119). Proximate analyses of the investigated coal samples reveal that the moisture content (M%) ranges from 1.28% to 2.98%, whereas, volatile matter (VM%) content is placed in the range of 27.01% to 33.86%. The ash content (A%) ranges from 10.92% to 30.01%. Fixed carbon (FC%) content varies from 41.53% to 55.93%. Fuel ratio variation shows a restricted range from 1.53 to 1.97. All the coal samples were found to be strongly caking and forming coke buttons. The present study is based on the adsorption isotherm experiments carried out under controlled P-T conditions for determination of actual gas adsorption capacity of the coal seams. This analysis shows that the maximum methane gas adsorbed in the coal sample CG-81 is 17 m3/t (Std. daf), at maximum pressure of 5.92 MPa and experimental temperature of 30°C. The calculated Langmuir regression parameters PL and VL range from 2.49 to 3.75 MPa and 22.94 to 26.88 m3/t (Std. daf), respectively.  相似文献

为促进子长–延川矿权区石油、煤炭等资源的合理勘探和综合开发利用,在分析矿区煤层分布特征及聚煤规律研究成果的基础上,分别采用地质块段法和层次分析结合权重分析法,对区内三叠系延长组五段(长1油层组)的煤炭资源量及其开发潜力进行了预测与评价。结果表明:矿区内2个煤组(3煤组和5煤组)的原地煤炭资源量为44.87×108 t,可采资源量33.89×108 t;区内煤炭资源开发潜力优度为78.32分,属于资源富集有利区,加上区内煤层赋存条件良好,构造较简单,且开采条件较好,因此本区煤炭资源开发前景好。  相似文献

The mercury and maceral content of subbituminous feed coals burned at six Canadian power plants was measured and compared to the mercury and carbon content of corresponding fly ashes. The fly ashes were collected from electrostatic precipitator (ESP) pollution controls used at the power plants. Four feed coals from the Upper Cretaceous to Tertiary age Scollard Formation were deposited in freshwater depositional environment and contain 35–44% inertinite. Two feed coals from the Upper Cretaceous age Horseshoe Canyon Formation were deposited in a brackish water environment and contain 14% inertinite.The data show that abundant inertinite equates to more unburned carbon in ESP fly ash, and to enhanced capture of mercury in cold-side ESP fly ash. This indicates that the inertinite content of a coal seam may be indicative of the percentage of unburned carbon and the percentage of mercury captured by a cold-side ESP.  相似文献
