The complex morphology and topography of Eastern Ishtar Terra have been interpreted as due to tectonic deformation. Models proposed to account for this deformation include: crustal flow through asthenospheric flow and thermal-gravitational sliding; rifting, gravity spreading, and fold belt formation; and horizontal convergence and crustal thickening. In this study we map the detailed structural and topographic fabric of this region in order to explore and test these hypotheses. Eastern Ishtar can be divided into four major provinces: Maxwell Montes/Western Fortuna Tessera, a high plateau and mountain belt dominated by long NNW trending ridges; Central Fortuna Tessera, a low region of orthogonally oriented short WNW trending ridges and long, NNE trending troughs; Eastern Fortuna Tessera, a broad, E-W trending topographic rise characterized by ENE trending troughs and a complex pattern of intersecting ridges; and Northern Fortuna Tessera, a region of steep, NE-facing topographic scarps and ridges that trend WNW. On the basis of structural and topographic relationships, the features within these provinces are found to be inconsistent with a formation through either downslope crustal flow or rifting. We find that the mapped features are most consistent with a formation through convergence, collison, and underthrusting of thickened crustal terranes. These terranes are suggested to have been created through processes of seafloor-type spreading and crustal collision. Based on relationships between the different terranes, several accretional events are proposed in which Eastern Ishtar is produced by the collision of crustal terranes beginning at Lakshmi Planum and extending to the east. This sequence is initiated with the formation of Maxwell Montes and Western Fortuna Tessera during east-west crustal convergence, underthrusting, and stacking. The next step involves the northeast to southwest convergence of a preexisting thick block of tessera in Central Fortuna, which produces shear deformation within Western Fortuna. This northeast to southwest convergence also produces Northern Fortuna Tessera through crustal imbrication, a process recognized along the entire northern boundary of Ishtar Terra. Finally, Laima Tessera converges with Fortuna from the southeast and collides with Eastern Fortuna Tessera producing shear within Eastern Fortuna and the linear convergence zones along the edges of Laima. High resolution images returned by the Magellan spacecraft will enable us to examine the features involved in the proposed production and suturing of crustal terranes.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T. New radar images (resolution 1.5–2.0 km) obtained from the Arecibo Observatory are used to assess the geology of a portion of the equatorial region of Venus (1 S to 45 N and from 270 eastward to 30). Nine geologic units are mapped on the basis of their radar characteristics and their distribution and correspondences with topography are examined. Plains are the most abundant unit, make up 80%; of the area imaged, and are divided into bright, dark, and mottled. Mottled plains contain abundant lava flows and domes suggesting that volcanism forming plains is a significant process in the equatorial region of Venus. Tesserae are found primarily on Beta Regio and its eastern flank and are interpreted to be locally stratigraphically older units, predating episodes of faulting and plains formation. Isolated regions of tesserae concentrated to the north of Western Eistla Regio are interpreted to predate the formation of plains in this area. The volcanoes Sif Mons, Gula Mons, Sappho, Theia Mons, and Rhea Mons, are found exclusively in highland regions and their deposits are interpreted as contributing only a small percentage to the overall volume of the regional topography. The northern 15 of the image data overlap with Venera 15/16 images making it possible to examine the characteristics of geologic units mapped under various illumination directions and incidence angles. Surface panoramas and geochemical data obtained from Venera landers provide ground truth for map units, evidence that plains are made up of basaltic lava flows, and that linear deformation zones contain abundant blocks and cobbles. On the basis of spatial and temporal relationships between geologic units, the highlands of Beta Regio and Western Eistla Regio are interpreted to have formed in association with areas of mantle upwelling which uplift plains, cause rifting, and in the case of Beta Regio, disrupt a large region of tessera. Zones of linear belt deformation in Beta Regio and Western Eistla Regio are interpreted to be extensional and indicate that at least limited extension has occurred in both regions. The images reveal for the first time that southern Devana Chasma is a region of overlapping rift valleys separated by a distance of 600 km. Linear deformation zones in Guinevere Planitia, separating Beta Regio and Eistla Regio, converge at a region of ovoids forming a discontinuous zone of disruption and completes an equatorial encompassing network of highlands and tectonic features. The similarity between ovoids and coronae suggests a mechanism of formation associated with hotspots or mantle plumes. Analysis of the distribution and density of impact craters suggests a surface age for this part of the planet similar to or slightly less than that determined for the northern high latitudes from Venera 15/16 data (0.3 to 1.5 by) and comparable to that calculated for the southern hemisphere. 相似文献

Maxima of calculated topographical line-of-sight (LOS) gravity attractions caused by Ishtar Terra are shifted to the north with respect to the measured LOS free air gravity maxima south of the highland. This implies a tendency to isostatic compensation of central Ishtar and mass surpluses at the continental border and the southern forelands. The following scenario is compatible with the interpretation of the gravity anomalies and morphological features. Relative motions of the lowland Sedna Planitia against continental Ishtar Terra have caused buckling and flat subduction of the lowland lithospheric material. (Deep subduction can be ruled out by thermal reasons). The free air gravity high is modelled by surplus masses of the buckling and of the high density subducting plate. Evidence for this is given by several compressional features like Ut and Vesta Rupes at the southern continental border and ridges at the SW-flanks of Maxwell Montes. It is further supported by several possible volcanic-tectonic depressions located in the southern part of Ishtar. This local interpretation does not necessarily imply the existence of global plate tectonics on Venus like on Earth, but at least limited horizontal movements of the Venusian lithosphere seem to be likely. This result shows that plate recycling must be considered for heat transfer through the lithosphere beside conduction and hot spot volcanism.Contribution No. 273, Institut für Geophysik der Universität Kiel, F.R.G. 相似文献

Pioneer Venus radar data has provided images (resolution 20- to 40-km) of approximately 50% of the total surface of Venus in a band between 45 ° N to 15 ° S. These data are used to map the broad radar characteristics of the equatorial region on the basis of radar brightness and texture. Seven radar units are defined and are used to assess the geologic character of the equatorial region. These units fall into two distinct classes, those that are radar-bright (35% of the equatorial region) which correspond to highlands and zones of intense tectonic deformation, and radar-dark units, corresponding primarily to plains (65% of the equatorial region). The correspondence between features in the 15 ° region of overlap between the Pioneer Venus and Venera 15/16 images is examined and used to extend units mapped in the northern high latitudes into the equatorial region. On the basis of the distribution of the radar units, properties of RMS slope, reflectivity, the scattering behavior of the surface, and topographic signature, seven physiographic units are mapped in the equatorial region and are identified by increasing complexity as plains (undivided), dark halo plains, upland rises, upland plateaus, interhighland tectonic zones, tectonically segmented linear highlands, and tectonic junctions. The physiographic units are distributed in a nearly continuous interconnecting zone of volcanic rises and tectonic features that extends for nearly 360 ° around the equator of the planet. The distribution of large circular structures interpreted as coronae is also examined and it is concluded that the abundances of the largest structures, diameters greater than 500 km, is less than in the northern high latitudes with a notable absence of smaller coronae. The absence of small coronae may be due to the resolution limit of the Pioneer Venus data since analyses of higher resolution Arecibo and Goldstone imagery suggests that a number of corona-like features not identified in the PV data are present.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T. Basilevsky (USSR Acad. of Sci. Moscow), James W. Head (Brown University, Providence), Gordon H. Pettengill (MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts) and R. S. Saunders (J.P.L., Pasadena). 相似文献

Aphrodite Terra is the largest highland area on Venus of the size of Africa. It is traversed by the Aphrodite-Beta belt of troughs with a length of 21 000 km. There are two other large belts of troughs on Venus: Themis-Atla, 14 000 km long, and Beta-Phoebe, 8000 km long. In this paper, four gravity profiles across Aphrodite Terra are studied and compared with the morphology.Western Aphrodite and Niobe Planitia to the north seem to be in isostatic equilibrium under the assumption of Airy compensation with a mean crustal thickness of T = 50 km. The graben area in the middle part of Aphrodite Terra shows negative isostatic gravity anomalies indicating deficit masses. The adjacent Atla Regio to the east is regionally Airy compensated with T = 50 km, and the mountains Nokomis, Maat and Ozza Montes are locally undercompensated, i.e. they are associated with surplus masses in the depth. Ulfrun Regio, a hilly terrain just east of Atla Regio is Airy compensated with T = 30 km. These results give a mean crustal thickness around 50 km for Aphrodite Terra. The isostatic disturbed zones in the middle of Aphrodite (grabens) and Atla Regio as well as the undercompensated Beta Regio have been associated with recent volcanism from the observation of the concentrations of electrical discharges in these areas. Atla and Beta Regiones are both located at intersections of the systems of troughs described above.Contribution No. 308, Institut für Geophysik der Universität Kiel, F.R.G. 相似文献

New radar images obtained from the Arecibo Observatory (resolution 1.5–4.0 km) for portions of the southern hemisphere of Venus show that: the upland of Phoebe Regio contains the southern extension of Devana Chasma, a rift zone extending 4200 km south from Theia Mons and interpreted as a zone of extension; Alpha Regio, the only large region of tessera within the imaged area, is similar to tessera mapped elsewhere on the planet and covers a smaller percentage of the surface than that observed in the northern high latitudes; the upland made of Ushas, Innini and Hathor Montes consists of three distinct volcanic constructs; Themis Regio is mapped as an ovoid chain of radar-bright arcuate single and double ring structures, edifices and bright lineaments. This area is interpreted as a region of mantle upwelling and on the basis of apparent split and separated features, a zone of localized faulting and extension. Linear zones of deformation in Lavinia Planitia are characterized by lineament belts that are often locally elevated, are similar to ridge belts mapped in the northern high latitudes and are interpreted to be characterized mainly by compression; radar-bright lava complexes within Lavinia Planitia are unique to this part of the planet and are interpreted to represent areas of eruption of high volumes of extremely fluid lava; the upland of Lada Terra is bound to the north by a linear deformation zone interpreted as extensional, is characterized by large ovoids and coronae, is interpreted to be associated with an area of mantle upwelling, and is in contrast to the northern high latitude highland of Ishtar Terra. Regions of plains in the southern hemisphere cover about 78%; of the mapped area and are interpreted to be volcanic in origin. Located within the area imaged (10–78 S) are 52 craters interpreted to be of impact origin ranging from 8 to 157 km in diameter. On the basis of an overall crater density of 0.94 craters/106 km2, it is determined that the age of this part of the Venus surface is similar to the 0.3 to 1.0 billion year age calculated for the equatorial region and northern high latitudes. The geologic characteristics of the portion of the Venus southern hemisphere imaged by Arecibo are generally similar to those mapped elsewhere on the planet. This part of the planet is characterized by widespread volcanic plains, large volcanic edifices, and zones of linear belt deformation. The southern hemisphere of Venus differs from northern high latitudes in that tessera makes up only a small percentage of the surface area and the ovoid chain in Themis Regio is unique to this part of the planet. On the basis of the analysis presented here, the southern hemisphere of Venus is interpreted to be characterized by regions of mantle upwelling on a variety of scales (ovoids, region made up of Ushas, Innini and Hathor Montes), upwelling and extension (Themis Regio) and localized compression (lineament belts in Lavinia Planitia). 相似文献

Different lines of evidence point to hydrological cycling in the martian past. The extent, duration, and magnitude of this cycling remains unclear, as well as the magnitude of aqueous processes on the surface. Here, we provide geomorphic and mineralogic evidence of a large inter-crater sedimentary basin located in the Terra Sirenum region, which was once covered by a body of liquid water with an areal extent of at least 30,000 km2 and a depth of approximately 200 m. The topographic basin, which is modified by a number of large impact craters, is partly controlled by ancient impact and tectonic structures. As a result of evaporation of the large body of water, salt flats formed in the lowest topographic reaches of the basin. Hydrated phyllosilicates occur in close proximity to the salt flats and in the ejecta and rim materials of small impact craters with stratigraphic relations that suggest that they underlie the evaporite deposits. Crater statistics place the maximum age of aqueous activity during the Late Noachian epoch. The relatively pristine mineral deposits in the basin have a high potential to yield information of the geochemistry and water activity during the ancient Noachian Period when conditions were seemingly more conducive to life. 相似文献

Eastern Aphrodite Terra and Western Aphrodite form an altimetrically prominent 14,000 km long part of the equatorial highlands on Venus. Several parallel linear discontinuities striking northwest across the general east-west regional strike of the highlands are mapped in the altimetric and radar image data of Eastern Aphrodite and identified on the basis of abrupt termination of rift-like central chasma, offset and segmentation of the center of the highlands, and radar image discontinuities in the lowlands to the north. These characteristics are similar to those of linear discontinuities previously mapped in Western Aphrodite in terms of length, orientation, and influence on the central highlands and adjacent lowlands.Altimetric profiles in directions parallel to the discontinuities are regionally symmetric, more ridge-like in Eastern Aphrodite compared to the plateau-dominated form of topography in Western Aphrodite, and are characterized by alternating paired ridge-and-trough forms near their crests and on their flanks. By mapping the center of symmetry in multiple profiles, the prominent segmentation of the highland is shown to be imparted by an offset of the regional symmetry along the mapped discontinuities. These characteristics are morphologically similar to several of the large-scale characteristics of divergent plate boundaries of Earth, including mid-ocean rise crests and rifts, offset at fracture zones and transform faults, and symmetric thermal boundary layer topography. The altitude of the surface in profiles parallel to the discontinuities decreases as the square root of distance from the symmetry axes and with a slope similar to that predicted for thermal boundary layer topography associated with rates of divergence on Venus of ~ 1 ± 0.5 cm/yr. In order to test the hypothesis that the linear discontinuities are analogous to fracture zones, the predicted altitude of the surface at great distance from the centers of symmetry of the central highland and in directions across the discontinuities was calculated on the basis of a thermal boundary layer topography model with offset of altimetric symmetry at each discontinuity. Similarity of observed Arecibo high-resolution altimetric profiles across the discontinuities with that calculated for thermal boundary layer topography offset by transform faults reveals that in terms of the sense and magnitude of regional steps in altimetry across discontinuities and the altitude of the surface, Eastern Aphrodite is similar to the known characteristics of crustal spreading at divergent boundaries. The plateau-like form of Western Aphrodite and the ridge-like form of Eastern Aphrodite are analogous respectively to the difference between areas of anomalous (Iceland) and normal crustal production along rise crests on Earth. Estimates of volumetric differences in crustal production in the environment of Venus and as it would be influenced by differences in mantle temperature beneath Western and Eastern Aphrodite imply that Eastern Aphrodite represents normal crustal production. On this basis, Western Aphrodite may be characterized by a mantle temperature that is warmer than the mantle beneath Eastern Aphrodite Terra, perhaps in association with deep convective mantle upwelling.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T. Basilevsky (USSR Acad. of Sci., Moscow), James W. Head (Brown University, Providence), Gordon H. Pettengill (MIT. Cambridge, Massachusetts) and R. S. Saunders (J.P.L., Pasadena). 相似文献

Recent numerical simulations have demonstrated that the Sun’s dynamical history within the Milky Way may be much more complex than that suggested by its current low peculiar velocity (Sellwood, J.A., Binney, J.J. [2002]. Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 336, 785-796; Roškar, R., Debattista, V.P., Quinn, T.R., Stinson, G.S., Wadsley, J. [2008]. Astrophys. J. 684, L79-L82). In particular, the Sun may have radially migrated through the galactic disk by up to 5-6 kpc (Roškar, R., Debattista, V.P., Quinn, T.R., Stinson, G.S., Wadsley, J. [2008]. Astrophys. J. 684, L79-L82). This has important ramifications for the structure of the Oort Cloud, as it means that the Solar System may have experienced tidal and stellar perturbations that were significantly different from its current local galactic environment. To characterize the effects of solar migration within the Milky Way, we use direct numerical simulations to model the formation of an Oort Cloud around stars that end up on solar-type orbits in a galactic-scale simulation of a Milky Way-like disk formation. Surprisingly, our simulations indicate that Sedna’s orbit may belong to the classical Oort Cloud. Contrary to previous understanding, we show that field star encounters play a pivotal role in setting the Oort Cloud’s extreme inner edge, and due to their stochastic nature this inner edge sometimes extends to Sedna’s orbit. The Sun’s galactic migration heightens the chance of powerful stellar passages, and Sedna production occurs around ∼20-30% of the solar-like stars we study. Considering the entire Oort Cloud, we find its median distance depends on the minimum galactocentric distance attained during the Sun’s orbital history. The inner edge also shows a similar dependence but with increased scatter due to the effects of powerful stellar encounters. Both of these Oort Cloud parameters can vary by an order of magnitude and are usually overestimated by an Oort Cloud formation model that assumes a fixed galactic environment. In addition, the amount of material trapped in outer Oort Cloud orbits (a > 20,000 AU) can be extremely low and may present difficulties for traditional models of Oort Cloud formation and long-period comet production. 相似文献

We have documented the surface characteristics and degradational history of a population of 65 lobate debris aprons in the Tempe Terra/Mareotis fossae region of Mars. These aprons were compared to other martian debris aprons to evaluate similarities and differences among different populations, which can provide insight into the dominant controls on apron development. Tempe/Mareotis debris aprons, found at the bases of isolated or clustered massifs, escarpments, and crater interior walls, were studied using Viking Orbiter, Mars Global Surveyor, and Mars Odyssey datasets in a GIS database. Six textures related to degradation of apron surfaces are identified in MOC images, and they are divided into two groups: an upper-surface group and a lower-surface group. Degradation occurs within an inferred smooth, upper surface mantle of ice and debris, producing a sequence of pitted, ridge and valley, and knobby textures of the upper-surface group. Where upper-surface materials have been removed, smooth and ridged textures of the lower-surface group are exposed. Degradation to various depths may expose lower-surface materials, which may consist of the main apron mass, remnants of mantling deposits, or both. A combination of geologic processes may have caused the degradation, including ice sublimation, ice melt, and eolian activity. Apron surfaces have lower maximum thermal inertias and mean surface temperatures than adjacent plains surfaces, which may be explained by the trapping of unconsolidated materials in low-lying pits and valleys formed by surface degradation or from the disruption of crusts on degraded portions of apron surfaces. One feature observed only on Tempe/Mareotis debris aprons are broad ridges, which mimic the shape of massif bases for tens of kilometers. We propose these to be constructional features that could have formed during cycles of increased debris production. Apron morphometric parameters including area, volume, slope, thickness, relief, and H/L, were compiled and the results show that Tempe/Mareotis aprons have average surface areas, volumes, and frontal thicknesses that are ∼2-3 times smaller than eastern Hellas aprons. Within the Tempe/Mareotis population escarpment-related aprons are larger than massif-related aprons, suggesting that aprons with larger source areas have potentially greater volatile accumulation, translating into longer apron travel distances and lower H/L values. 相似文献

The Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on board the ESA/Venus Express mission has technical specifications well suited for many science objectives of Venus exploration. VIRTIS will both comprehensively explore a plethora of atmospheric properties and processes and map optical properties of the surface through its three channels, VIRTIS-M-vis (imaging spectrometer in the 0.3–1 μm range), VIRTIS-M-IR (imaging spectrometer in the 1–5 μm range) and VIRTIS-H (aperture high-resolution spectrometer in the 2–5 μm range). The atmospheric composition below the clouds will be repeatedly measured in the night side infrared windows over a wide range of latitudes and longitudes, thereby providing information on Venus's chemical cycles. In particular, CO, H2O, OCS and SO2 can be studied. The cloud structure will be repeatedly mapped from the brightness contrasts in the near-infrared night side windows, providing new insights into Venusian meteorology. The global circulation and local dynamics of Venus will be extensively studied from infrared and visible spectral images. The thermal structure above the clouds will be retrieved in the night side using the 4.3 μm fundamental band of CO2. The surface of Venus is detectable in the short-wave infrared windows on the night side at 1.01, 1.10 and 1.18 μm, providing constraints on surface properties and the extent of active volcanism. Many more tentative studies are also possible, such as lightning detection, the composition of volcanic emissions, and mesospheric wave propagation. 相似文献

It has been proposed that divergence and crustal spreading occur in Western Aphrodite Terra and some adjacent equatorial regions of Venus at rates in the range of a few centimeters per year. If equatorial spreading is common and widespread, then a consequence of this should be: (1) a young average age of the surface of the planet, (2) a trend in age from older terrain in the polar regions to younger terrain toward the equator, and (3) a latitudinal distribution of extensional features in equatorial regions and compressional deformation features in middle to high latitudes. These predictions are tested using published results from Arecibo, VENERA 15/16, and Pioneer Venus data, and it is found that: (1) the northern mid-to-high latitudes are characterized by a young average age, (2) there is a trend in the total number of craters per unit area from high values in the north polar regions to low values toward the equator, and (3) there is evidence for a latitudinal distribution of tectonic features of different types, with extensional features common in equatorial regions and compressional deformation features common in the northern middle to high latitudes. Further tests of these and other predictions can be made using data from the upcoming Magellan mission. 相似文献

Analyses of Mars Express OMEGA hyperspectral data (0.4-2.7 μm) for Terra Meridiani and western Arabia Terra show that the northern mantled cratered terrains are covered by dust that is spectrally dominated by nanophase ferric oxides. Dark aeolian dunes inside craters and dark streaks extending from the dunes into the intercrater areas in mantled cratered terrains in western Arabia Terra have similar pyroxene-rich signatures demonstrating that the dunes supply dark basaltic material to create dark streaks. The dissected cratered terrains to the south of the mantled terrains are dominated spectrally by both low-calcium and high-calcium pyroxenes with abundances of 20-30% each retrieved from nonlinear radiative transfer modeling. Spectra over the hematite-bearing plains in Meridiani Planum are characterized by very weak but unique spectral features attributed to a mixture of a dark and featureless component (possibly gray hematite) and minor olivine in some locations. Hydrated minerals (likely hydrous ferric sulfates and/or hydrous hydroxides) associated with poorly ferric crystalline phases are found in the etched terrains to the north and east of the hematite-bearing plains where erosion has exposed ∼1 km of section of layered outcrops with high thermal inertias. These materials are also found in numerous craters in the northern Terra Meridiani and may represent outliers of the etched terrain materials. A few localized spots within the etched terrain also exhibit the spectral signature of Fe-rich phyllosilicates. The ensemble of observations show that the evidence for aqueous processes detected by the Opportunity Rover in Meridiani Planum is widespread and confirms the extended presence of surface or near-surface water over this large region of Mars. The scenarios of formation of Terra Meridiani (“dirty” acidic evaporite, impact surge or weathering of volcanic ash) cannot satisfactorily explain the mineralogy derived from the OMEGA observations. The formation of the etched terrains is consistent with leaching of iron sulfides and formation of sulfates and hydrated iron oxides, either in-place or via transport and evaporation of aqueous fluids and under aqueous conditions less acidic than inferred from rocks examined by Opportunity. 相似文献

We present profiles of the line-of-sight (l.o.s.) ionospheric wind velocities in the southern auroral/polar region of Saturn. Our velocities are derived from the measurement of Doppler shifting of the H3+ν2Q(1,0−) line at 3.953 microns. The data for this study were obtained using the facility high-resolution spectrometer CSHELL on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, during the night of February 6, 2003 (UT). The l.o.s. velocity profiles finally derived are consistent with an extended region of the upper atmosphere sub-corotating with the planet: the ion velocities in the inertial reference are only 1/3 of those expected for full planetary corotation. We discuss the results in the light of recent proposals for the kronian magnetosphere, and suggest that, in this region, Saturn's ion winds may be under solar wind control. 相似文献

Observations of Titan obtained by the Cassini Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) have revealed Selk crater, a geologically young, bright-rimmed, impact crater located ∼800 km north-northwest of the Huygens landing site. The crater rim-crest diameter is ∼90 km; its floor diameter is ∼60 km. A central pit/peak, 20-30 km in diameter, is seen; the ratio of the size of this feature to the crater diameter is consistent with similarly sized craters on Ganymede and Callisto, all of which are dome craters. The VIMS data, unfortunately, are not of sufficient resolution to detect such a dome. The inner rim of Selk crater is fluted, probably by eolian erosion, while the outer flank and presumed ejecta blanket appear dissected by drainages (particularly to the east), likely the result of fluvial erosion. Terracing is observed on the northern and western walls of Selk crater within a 10-15 km wide terrace zone identified in VIMS data; the terrace zone is bright in SAR data, consistent with it being a rough surface. The terrace zone is slightly wider than those observed on Ganymede and Callisto and may reflect differences in thermal structure and/or composition of the lithosphere. The polygonal appearance of the crater likely results from two preexisting planes of weakness (oriented at azimuths of 21° and 122° east of north). A unit of generally bright terrain that exhibits similar infrared-color variation and contrast to Selk crater extends east-southeast from the crater several hundred kilometers. We informally refer to this terrain as the Selk “bench.” Both Selk and the bench are surrounded by the infrared-dark Belet dune field. Hypotheses for the genesis of the optically bright terrain of the bench include: wind shadowing in the lee of Selk crater preventing the encroachment of dunes, impact-induced cryovolcanism, flow of a fluidized-ejecta blanket (similar to the bright crater outflows observed on Venus), and erosion of a streamlined upland formed in the lee of Selk crater by fluid flow. Vestigial circular outlines in this feature just east of Selk’s ejecta blanket suggest that this might be a remnant of an ancient, cratered crust. Evidently the southern margin of the feature has sufficient relief to prevent the encroachment of dunes from the Belet dune field. We conclude that this feature either represents a relatively high-viscosity, fluidized-ejecta flow (a class intermediate to ejecta blankets and long venusian-style ejecta flows) or a streamlined upland remnant that formed downstream from the crater by erosive fluid flow from the west-northwest. 相似文献

The transmission in the 7-μm “window” opf Venus was calculated for a 7-layer model atmosphere. The synthetic spectra show that radiation from the layer 20–30 km above the surface would reach the top of the atmosphere between 6.2 and 7.0 μm if there were no absorption besides the isotopic CO2 bands; for the 7.0- to 8.2-μm region, the radiating level would be located 40–50 km above the surface of Venus. The brightness temperature for the entire region is 430°K; for the above two regions it is 494 and 341°K, respectively. 相似文献

Observations of the dayside of Venus performed by the high spectral resolution channel (–H) of the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on board the ESA Venus Express mission have been used to measure the altitude of the cloud tops and the water vapor abundance around this level with a spatial resolution ranging from 100 to 10 km. CO2 and H2O bands between 2.48 and 2.60 μm are analyzed to determine the cloud top altitude and water vapor abundance near this level. At low latitudes (±40°) mean water vapor abundance is equal to 3 ± 1 ppm and the corresponding cloud top altitude at 2.5 μm is equal to 69.5 ± 2 km. Poleward from middle latitudes the cloud top altitude gradually decreases down to 64 km, while the average H2O abundance reaches its maximum of 5 ppm at 80° of latitude with a large scatter from 1 to 15 ppm. The calculated mass percentage of the sulfuric acid solution in cloud droplets of mode 2 (~1 μm) particles is in the range 75–83%, being in even more narrow interval of 80–83% in low latitudes. No systematic correlation of the dark UV markings with the cloud top altitude or water vapor has been observed. 相似文献
