Ultra low frequency (ULF) wave activity in the high-latitude ionosphere has been observed by a high frequency (HF) Doppler sounder located at Tromsø, Norway (69.71°N, 19.2°E geographic coordinates). A statistical study of the occurrence of these waves has been undertaken from data collected between 1979 and 1984. The diurnal, seasonal, solar cycle and geomagnetic activity variations in occurrence have been investigated. The findings demonstrate that the ability of the sounder to detect ULF wave signatures maximises at the equinoxes and that there is a peak in occurrence in the morning sector. The occurrence rate is fairly insensitive to changes associated with the solar cycle but increases with the level of geomagnetic activity. As a result, it has been possible to characterise the way in which prevailing ionospheric and magnetospheric conditions affect such observations of ULF waves. 相似文献

The mathematical model of the high-latitude ionosphere, developed earlier, is applied to investigate how the modulation regime of the ionospheric HF heating facility near Tromso, Scandinavia, affects the large-scale high-latitude F-layer modification. Simulations are made for distinct cases, in which high-power waves have different modulations, namely, for continuous wave transmission and for pulse operation, with the amplitude of the HF wave being square wave-modulated. The calculations are performed for different lengths of pulses and various time intervals between successive pulses. The frequency of HF waves is chosen to be close to the most effective frequency for the large-scale F2-layer modification. Simulations are made for autumn and low geomagnetic activity conditions both for nocturnal and for daytime conditions. The results of modeling indicate that the most considerable decrease in the F-region electron concentration may be achieved when the heater is operated continuously. Moreover, the perceptible decrease in the F-region electron concentration may take place when the heating facility is operated pulsatily. For the pulse operation, the amplitude of the electron concentration variations depends on the ratio of the length of pulses to the time interval between successive pulses. The higher the latter ratio is, the more the electron concentration variation amplitude ought to be. 相似文献

F2 of the extraordinary wave of the F2-layer, we were first to detect the excitation of intense artificial small-scale ionospheric irregularities (ASIs), accompanied
by electron temperature increases by approximately 50%. The results of coordinated satellite and ground-based observations
of the powerful HF radiowave impact on the high-latitude ionosphere are considered. During ionospheric F-region heating by powerful HF radiowaves of ordinary polarization (O-mode) during evening hours, the phenomenon of ion outflow
accompanied by electron temperature increases and thermal plasma expansion was revealed. Concurrent DMSP-F15 satellite measurements
at a height of about 850 km indicate an O+ ion density increase. The CHAMP satellite observations identified ULF emissions at the modulation frequency (3 Hz) of the
powerful HF radiowave, generated during modulated emissions of the powerful HF radiowave of O-polarization and accompanied
by a substantial increase in the electron temperature and ASI generation. 相似文献

Variations of HF probe radio wave parameters caused by the influence on the ionosphere of oblique powerful HF radiowaves are analysed. The analysis is made on the data obtained from the original experiments carried out on single-hop paths in the middle and subauroral latitudes. Powerful and probe waves with some difference in frequency were chosen near MUF and were transmitted in the same direction. The polar diagrams of both transmitting systems overlapped in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The results obtained indicate that the ionospheric plasma parameters can be varied by powerful oblique HF radiowaves under certain geophysical conditions. 相似文献

In this study, we examine the development of topography on a thin dense layer at the base of the lower mantle. The effect of the convecting mantle above is represented as a traction acting on the upper surface of the layer. Topography on the layer boundaries is predicted by a balance of dynamic flow stress and external traction. The nature of boundary topography depends on the magnitude of the driving tractions and the density variation within the layer. If we assume that the layer density is greatest beneath areas of mantle downwelling and decreases to a minimum beneath areas of mantle upwelling (the layer is thermally coupled to the convection in the overlying mantle) then its upper boundary develops a cusp-like peak beneath the upwelling mantle. The height of this peak is potentially much greater than the layer thickness. If, however, the layers are effectively coupled by viscous shear then internal density gradients of the opposite sign may be established. In this case, we observe solutions where the layer is completely swept away beneath areas of mantle downwelling leaving steep-sided ‘islands’ of dense material. This mechanism therefore provides a possible explanation for steep-sided anomalously slow regions at the base of the mantle observed by seismic methods (e.g. beneath south Africa) or for discrete ultralow velocity zones detected at the core-mantle boundary beneath locations of surface hotspots. The magnitude of the upper boundary driving tractions compared to the density gradient within the layer is the key parameter that determines the nature of flow in, and consequently boundary topography of, the layer. The deflection of the core-mantle boundary is small compared with that of the top of the dense layer, but a change in sign of the ratio of these deflections is observed as the magnitude of the driving tractions changes relative to the magnitude of the internal density gradient. We compare seismic measurements of core-mantle boundary topography and D′′ topography with the predictions of this model in an attempt to constrain model parameters, but no clear correlation seems to exist between D′′ thickness and CMB topography. 相似文献

Laboratory experiments were performed to study the influence of density and viscosity layering on the formation and stability of plumes. Viscosity ratios ranged from 0.1 to 6400 for buoyancy ratios between 0.3 and 20, and Rayleigh numbers between 105 and 2.108. The presence of a chemically stratified boundary layer generates long-lived thermochemical plumes. These plumes first develop from the interface as classical thermal boundary layer instabilities. As they rise, they entrain by viscous coupling a thin film of the other layer and locally deform the interface into cusps. The interfacial topography and the entrainment act to further anchor the plumes, which persist until the chemical stratification disappears through entrainment, even for Rayleigh numbers around 108. The pattern of thermochemical plumes remains the same during an experiment, drifting only slowly through the tank. Scaled to an Earth’s mantle without plate tectonics, our results show that: (1) thermochemical plumes are expected to exist in the mantle, (2) they could easily survive hundreds of millions of years, depending on the size and magnitude of the chemical heterogeneity on which they are anchored, and (3) their drift velocity would be at most 1-2 mm/yr. They would therefore produce long-lived and relatively fixed hotspots on the lithosphere. However, the thermochemical plumes would follow any large scale motion imposed on the chemical layer. Therefore, the chemical heterogeneity acts more as a ‘floating anchor’ than as an absolute one. 相似文献

In the steady state, the convective boundary layer (CBL) (the transition from the lithosphere to the convecting mantle, the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary) is on the verge of stability. This determines its depth, thickness, and the steady-state temperature distribution in the lithosphere. Had the mantle been homogeneous, the base of the lithosphere at the current potential temperature would lie globally at the same depth H rh of 50 to 70 km. Actually, the regime of interaction of the mantle convection with the lithosphere is determined by the relationship between this depth and the thickness H depl of the chemical boundary layer including the crust and the layer of the depleted rock. If the thickness of the chemical boundary layer is small H depl < H rh, as it is the case in the present-day oceanic mantle, the suboceanic regime is established with the mantle convection that does not reach the base of the chemical boundary layer. In this case, the top of CBL is located at depth H rh, while the oceanic heat flow and the depth of the seafloor only depend on the potential temperature T p and, within the areas where the crust is older than 60 to 70 Ma, are the same everywhere far from the disturbed territories (the hot points and the subduction zones). The absence of noticeable distinctions between the heat flow in the different oceanic basins suggests a global constancy of the potential temperature. If H depl > H rh, the subcontinental regime of the interaction of the mantle convection with the lithosphere is established. In this case, the CBL is immediately adjacent to the depleted lithosphere, its top is located at depth H depl, and the surface heat flow q(T p, H depl) not only depends on the potential temperature T p but also on the the thickness of the depleted lithosphere H depl; it decreases with increasing H depl and, therefore, with the age of the lithosphere. Given the potential temperature, the dependence q(T p, H depl) agrees well with the envelope of the results of kimberlite xenolith thermobarometry presented in the diagram of the deepest xenolith depth as a function of the heat flow. It is likely that in the lowest part of the continental lithosphere there is a zone of horizontal shear deformation, from where kimberlites entrain the strongly deformed and, at the same time, the deepest xenoliths. Besides, the azimuthal anisotropy of seismic velocities can be associated with this zone. The change in its direction with depth can be observed as the Lehmann discontinuity. 相似文献

High-time resolution CUTLASS observations and ground-based magnetometers have been employed to study the occurrence of vortical flow structures propagating through the high-latitude ionosphere during magnetospheric substorms. Fast-moving flow vortices (800 m s–1) associated with Hall currents flowing around upward directed field-aligned currents are frequently observed propagating at high speed (1 km s–1) azimuthally away from the region of the ionosphere associated with the location of the substorm expansion phase onset. Furthermore, a statistical analysis drawn from over 1000 h of high-time resolution, nightside radar data has enabled the characterisation of the bulk properties of these vortical flow systems. Their occurrence with respect to substorm phase has been investigated and a possible generation mechanism has been suggested. 相似文献

Abstract Small amplitude two-dimensional Boussinesq convection in a plane layer with stress-free boundaries rotating uniformly about the vertical is studied. A horizontally unbounded layer is modelled by periodic boundary conditions. When the centrifugal force is balanced by an appropriate pressure gradient the resulting equations are translation invariant, and overstable convection can take the form of travelling waves. In the Prandtl number regime 0.53 < [sgrave] < 0.68 such solutions are preferred over the more usual standing waves. For [sgrave] < 0.53, travelling waves are stable provided the Taylor number is sufficiently large. 相似文献

Since the middle of 1995, an HF Doppler sounder has been running almost continuously in northern Norway, with the receiver at Ramfjordmoen and the transmitter at Seljelvnes. Concurrent operation of the EISCAT UHF radar in common programme (CP-1) mode has made it possible to study the ionospheric signature of a magnetospheric ULF wave. These are the first results of such wave signatures observed simultaneously in both instruments. It has been demonstrated that the observed Doppler signature was mainly due to the vertical bulk motion of the ionosphere caused by the electric field perturbation of the ULF wave and the first direct observational confirmation of a numerical simulation has been achieved. The wave, which was Alfvénic in nature, was detected by the instruments 8° equatorward of the broad resonance region. The implications for the deduced wave modes in the ionosphere and the mechanism producing the HF Doppler variations are discussed.Presented at the Eighth International EISCAT Workshop, Leicester, UK, June 1997 相似文献

HF radar measurements were performed near the magnetic equator in Africa (Korhogo 9°2463N–5°3738W) during the International Equatorial Electrojet Year (1993–1994). The HF radar is a high–resolution zenithal radar. It gives ionograms, Doppler spectra and echo parameters at several frequencies simultaneously. This paper presents a comparative study of the daytime ionospheric structures observed during 3 days selected as representative of different magnetic conditions, given by magnetometer measurements. Broad Doppler spectra, large echo width, and amplitude fluctuations revealed small-scale instability processes up to the F-region peak. The height variations measured at different altitudes showed gravity waves and larger-scale disturbances related to solar daytime influence and equatorial electric fields. The possibility of retrieving the ionospheric electric fields from these Doppler or height variation measurements in the presence of the other possible equatorial ionospheric disturbances is discussed. 相似文献

A three-dimensional model is used to investigate the relations between parameters of atmospheric gravity waves (GW) and the spatial structure of O2 atmospheric (0,0) nightglow wave perturbations observed from space. It is shown that observed perturbations may be divided into the linear and nonlinear parts. The linear perturbations appear as wavelet signatures observed at certain viewing directions. The nonlinear part of the perturbations causes an increase in all sky brightness of the O2 atmospheric (0,0) nightglow. The model shows that at certain viewing directions the cancellation effect for waves passing through the emission layer disappears. The latter gives the opportunity to create the complete set of functions that may be used for the spectral decomposition of observed brightness field. The obtained spectrum may be interpreted in terms of the Fourier coefficients of 3D-decomposition of the temperature fluctuations induced by gravity waves just near the emission layer. 相似文献

Abstract The behavior of Rossby waves on a shear flow in the presence of a nonlinear critical layer is studied, with particular emphasis on the role played by the critical layer in a Rossby wave resonance mechanism. Previous steady analyses are extended to the resonant case and it is found that the forced wave dominates the solution, provided the flow configuration is not resonant for the higher harmonics induced by the critical layer. Numerical simulations for the forced initial value problem show that the solution evolves towards the analysed steady state when conditions are resonant for the forced wave, and demonstrate some of the complications that arise when they are resonant for higher harmonics. In relating the initial value and steady problems, it is argued that the time dependent solution does not require the large mean flow distortion that Haberman (1972) found to be necessary outside the critical layer in the steady case. 相似文献

The paper is concerned with the study of the effect of the randomness of material parameters on mean wave propagation in a semi-infinite viscoelastic medium. The medium considered in this paper is a configuration of a randomly non-homogeneous layer overlying a homogeneous half-space and is loaded harmonically on the top surface. The method used is that of Karal and Keller and is based on the idea of fundamental matrix and Bourret approximation. The integro-differential equation obtained in this paper is solved by the Laplace transform method. By using boundary and continuity conditions the mean wave solution is obtained. Numerical results show that the correlation functions, which introduce long-range interactions, can be the source of the wave amplification. 相似文献

Response of mesospheric ozone to the heating of the lower ionosphere by high-power HF radio emission

We detected a decrease in the intensity of microwave radiation at the atmospheric ozone line at a frequency of 110836.04 MHz during ionospheric modification by high-power HF radiowaves radiated by the Sura Ionospheric Heating Facility. The obtained experimental data allowed us to hypothesize that this effect was caused by the fact that mesospheric ozone was affected by internal gravity waves generated in the E region of the ionosphere during its high-power HF radiowave heating. 相似文献

The convection of plasma in the high-latitude ionosphere is strongly affected by the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) carried by the solar wind. From numerous statistical studies, it is known that the plasma circulation conforms to patterns that are characteristic of particular IMF states. Following a change in the IMF, the convection responds by reconfiguring into a pattern that is more consistent with the new IMF. Some early studies reported that the convection first begins to change near noon while on the dawn and dusk flanks and on the nightside it remains relatively unaffected for tens of minutes. Work by Ridley et al. (J. Geophys. Res. 103 (1998) 4023–4039) and Ruohoniemi and Greenwald (Geophys. Res. Lett. 25 (1998) 2913–2916) that was based on measurements with more global sets of instruments challenged this view. A debate ensued as to the true nature of the convection response. We follow the arguments of Lockwood and Cowley (J. Geophys. Res. 104 (1999) 4387–4391) and Ridley et al. (J. Geophys. Res. 104 (1999) 4393–4396) by reviewing recent results on the timing of the onset of the convection response to the changed IMF. We discuss the timing problem from the perspectives of observations and modeling. In our view, the onset of the ionospheric response to changed IMF is globally simultaneous on time scales of a few minutes. A physical basis for the rapid communication of effects in the dayside convection to the nightside has been demonstrated in magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We also offer some cautionary notes on the timing of convection changes and the use of global assimilative techniques to study local behavior. 相似文献

The CUTLASS (Co-operative UK Twin Located Auroral Sounding System) Finland HF radar, whilst operating in a high spatial and temporal resolution mode, has measured the ionospheric signature of a naturally occurring ULF wave in scatter artificially generated by the Tromsø Heater. The wave had a period of 100 s and exhibited curved phase fronts across the heated volume (about 180 km along a single radar beam). Spatial information provided by CUTLASS has enabled an m-number for the wave of about 38 to be determined. This high-m wave was not detected by the IMAGE (International Monitor for Auroral Geomagnetic Effects) network of ground magnetometers, as expected for a wave of a small spatial scale size. These observations offer the first independent confirmation of the existence of the ground uncorrelated ULF wave signatures previously reported in measurements recorded from an HF Doppler sounder located in the vicinity of Tromsø. These results both demonstrate a new capability for geophysical exploration from the combined CUTLASS-EISCAT ionospheric Heater experiment, and provide a verification of the HF Doppler technique for the investigation of small scale ULF waves. 相似文献

Summary From a study of the Love wave dispersion in a single layer model it is shown that the shape of the dispersion curves is very insensitive to the changes in the density ratio. The bilogarithmic grids giving dispersion curves for different shear velocity ratios and a mean density ratio of 1.20 should be sufficient for interpretation by the method of curve matching. Such grids and the numerical data are given both for the phase velocity and the group velocity. An example is given illustrating the use of these grids. 相似文献

A numerical model of deep, uniform, oscillatory, rough-turbulent boundary-layer flow is described. The model is based upon the governing horizontal momentum equation and a closure scheme involving the turbulent-energy equation and various turbulence-scaling laws. Finite difference solutions of these equations are obtained for a range of values of the ‘relative roughness’ (A0/ks), whereA0 is the excursion amplitude of the water particles in the free-stream flow andks is the ‘equivalent bed roughness’. Typical vertical profiles of horizontal velocity, turbulence energy and eddy viscosity, and time-series of the bed shear stress are presented. The model results are then used to determine the wave drag coefficient, boundary-layer thickness and phase lead of the bed shear stress over the free-stream velocity, each as a function ofA0/ks. These results are shown to be in generally good agreement with previous experimental and theoretical results. Finally, the model is used to test for the existence of a universal velocity distribution for uniform oscillatory (sinusoidal) rough-turbulent flow. The ‘law of the wall’ and the ‘defect law’ proposed by Jonsson (1980, Ocean Engineering, 7, 109–152) are well supported by the model, and the existence of a logarithmic ‘velocity overlap layer’ in which both of these laws are valid is demonstrated forAo/ks30. 相似文献
