Summary. Stable components of magnetization have been isolated in 15 lava flows (mean K-Ar age 123 ± 4 Myr) from the alkaline sequence outcropping at El Salto-Almafuerte, Province of Cordoba, Argentina. Magnetic and geologic stratigraphy, as well as K-Ar ages indicate that this sequence was probably extruded in the Lower Cretaceous during the first volcanic cycle of the Sierra de los Cóndores Group (Vulcanitas Cerro Colorado Formation).
The palaeomagnetic pole-position for El Salto-Almafuerte lava flows, computed from the mean of 15 virtual geomagnetic poles and denoted SAK7, is: 25° E, 72° S ( k = 35, α95= 6.5°); it is fairly close to other Lower Cretaceous palaeomagnetic poles for South America. The elongated distribution of Cretaceous palaeomagnetic poles suggest recurrent drift for South America in early Cretaceous time.
The palaeomagnetic and radiometric data for the igneous rocks from El Salto-Almafuerte support the magnetic reversal time-scale for the early Cretaceous suggested by oceanic magnetic lineations.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic data for the Cretaceous Pirgua Subgroup from 14 different time units of basalts and red beds exposed in the north-western part of Argentina (25° 45' S 65° 50' W) are given.
After cleaning all the units show normally polarized magnetic remanence and yield a palaeomagnetic pole at 222° E 85° S ( d Φ= 7°, d χ= 10°).
The palaeomagnetic poles for the Pirgua Subgroup (Early to Late Cretaceous, 114–77 Myr), for the Vulcanitas Cerro Rumipalla Formation (Early Cretaceous,<118 Myr, Valencio & Vilas) and for the Poços de Caldas Alkaline Complex (Late Cretaceous, 75 Myr, Opdyke & McDonald) form a 'time-group' reflecting a quasi-static interval (mean pole position, 220° E 85° S, α95= 6°) and define a westward polar wander in Early Cretaceous time for South America.
Comparison of the positions of the Cretaceous palaeomagnetic poles for South America with those for Africa suggests that the separation of South America and Africa occurred in late Early Cretaceous time, after the effusion of the Serra Geral basalts.
The K-Ar ages of basalts of the Pirgua Subgroup (114 ± 5; 98 ± 1 and 77 ± 1 Myr) fix points of reference for three periods of normal polarity within the Cretaceous palaeomagnetic polarity column.  相似文献

Summary. Remanent magnetization directions of 32 dykes and lava flows sampled near Ayacucho, the Peruvian Andes revealed 14.2°± 5.5° counterclockwise rotation after the Neogene intrusion of this dyke swarm. Palaeo-magnetic results of these rocks and other palaeomagnetic evidences from the Central Andean Mesozoic rocks suggest relatively recent occurrence of the Andean oroclinal bending around the axis at the Peru-Chile border.  相似文献

Summary. Palaeomagnetic data from 71 hand samples of igneous rocks of Late Ordovician age exposed in western Argentina (31.3°S, 69.4°W, Alcaparrosa Formation) are given. Stable remanent magnetization was isolated in the majority of samples; they yield a palaeomagnetic pole at 56°S 33°E ( N = 8, α95= 16°). Whole rock K-Ar age determinations yield an age of 416 ± 10 Myr for a pillow lava of the Alcaparrosa Formation.
Palaeomagnetic data for South America, Africa, Australia, Antarctica and India suggest that Gondwana was a unit at least as far back as 1000 Myr. The palaeomagnetic data define a rapid polar migration for Gondwana in Ordovician time which is consistent with the widespread occurrences of Late Ordovician glacial deposits across this supercontinent.  相似文献

New palaeomagnetic analyses have been carried out in the Kerguelen Islands on 32 lava flows of well-established age (20–22 Ma). Combined with previous studies, they yield a reliable pole for the Lower Miocene for the Antarctic plate: N = 59 flows. 349.9°E, 83.5°S, A95= 6.1°. A reversal sequence reversed-normal has been identified in the Port Jeanne d'Arc section.  相似文献

Summary. In 1972–78, the late N. D. Watkins and others carried out ajoint field programme of geological mapping in the Mio-Pliocene flood basalts of Iceland, including sampling for K-Ar dating and palaeomagnetic research. The major part of the palaeomagnetic sampling is represented by 2462 lavas in five long composite sections through the lava pile. This paper deals with various statistical properties of this data set.
It is concluded that geomagnetic reversals occur more frequently than is assumed in the current ocean-floor polarity time-scale. There is no evidence for significant asymmetries between normal and reverse polarity states of the field, neither as regards chron lengths, secular variation, or virtual dipole moment magnitude. Intensities of remanence in these lavas are shown to be well approximated in terms of a hyperbolic distribution. The latitude distribution of virtual magnetic poles can be fitted with a Bingham function having k' ∼ 4.5, and low-latitude poles do not occur preferentially in any particular longitude interval.  相似文献

Measurements are described of the directions of remanent magnetization of 89 samples from nine lava flows and red beds. Stable remanent magnetization was isolated after AC demagnetizing. All the units have normal remanent magnetization, except one lava flow which yields a direction toward the north with positive inclination. From the mean direction of stable remanence, referred to the bedding, of each unit a virtual geomagnetic pole is computed; the mean of eight of these poles is 90·6 °E, 84·2° South, α95= 4·7° and represents the position of the palaeomagnetic pole for the exposures of the Sierra de Los Condores group from El Estrecho-Cerro Libertad. The position of this pole is reasonably close to the positions of the South American Lower Cretaceous palaeomagnetic poles for the Serra Geral and Vulcanitas Cerro Colorado formations and the trachybasaltic dykes from Rio Los Molinos. This supports the interpretations that the South Atlantic Ocean was formed in Lower Cretaceous times and that the Earth's magnetic field was on average similar to that of a geocentric dipole in South America in the Lower Cretaceous, and suggests that there has not been substantial relative movements between Central Argentina and Southern Brazil.  相似文献

Summary. In this paper we show that: (1) The positions of the Cretaceous palaeomagnetic poles (PP) for South America and Africa exhibit elongated distributions that are due to rapid movement of these continents from the south pole.
(2) The positions of the Middle—late Jurassic virtual geomagnetic poles for South America exhibit an elongated distribution along the meridians 20–200° E; it is suggested that this is due to a rapid shift of South America in Middle—late Jurassic time.
(3) The late early—early late Cretaceous sections of the apparent polar wandering paths for South America and Africa are consistent with South Atlantic seafloor spreading data.
On the basis of the comparison of the reliable late Palaeozoic—late Cretaceous PPs for South America and Africa, taking into account the restrictions established by geological, palaeontological and seafloor spreading data, it is suggested that minor movements could have occurred within Western Gondwana in middle—late Jurassic time along a narrow zone which later became the South Atlantic divergent boundary.
Four 'hairpins' are defined in the late Palaeozoic—late Cretaceous section of the apparent polar wandering path for South America; the two youngest of these can be correlated with the origin of the South Atlantic Ocean basin and the onset of the Andean Orogeny, respectively.
The magnetostratigraphy for the Serra Geral lava flow sequence suggests that some of these flows were poured out rapidly without significant interruption.  相似文献

A palaeomagnetic investigation has been carried out of rocks from the eastern part of the Voronezh Massif, which constitutes, together with the Ukrainian Shield, the Sarmatian segment in the southern part of the East European Craton. The samples were collected in a quarry close to the town of Pavlovsk (50.4°N, 40.1°E), where a syenitic-granitic body intrudes Archaean units. U–Pb (zircon) dating has yielded an age of 2080  Ma for the intrusion.
Two characteristic magnetic components, A and B, were isolated by thermal and alternating-field demagnetization. Component A was obtained from granites and quartz syenites (11 samples) and has a mean direction of D = 229°, I = 28°, and a pole position at 12°N, 172°E. This pole is close to a contemporary mean pole (9°N, 187°E) for the Ukrainian Shield, which implies that the Voronezh Massif and the Shield constituted a single entity at 2.06  Ga. These poles differ from contemporaneous poles of the Fennoscandian Shield, indicating that the relative positions of the two shields were different from their present configuration about 2100  Myr ago.
A component B, isolated only in quartz monzonites (five samples), has a mean direction D = 144°, I = 49°, and a pole position at 4°N, 251°E, which is close to late Sveconorwegian (approximately 900  Ma) poles for Baltica. This suggests that the East European Craton was consolidated some time between 2080 and 900  Ma. Comparison with other palaeomagnetic data permit us to narrow this time span to 1770–1340  Ma.  相似文献

A generalized database of global palaeomagnetic data from 3719 lava flows and thin dykes of age 0–5 Ma has been constructed for use with a relational database management system. The database includes all data whose virtual geomagnetic poles (VGP) lie within 45 of the spin axis and can be used for studies of palaeosecular variation and for geomagnetic field modelling. Because many of these data were collected and processed more than 15–20 years ago, each result has been characterized according to the demagnetization procedures carried out. Analysis of these data in terms of the latitude variation of the angular dispersion of VGPs (palaeosecular variation from lavas) strongly suggests that careful data selection is required and that many of the older studies may need to be redone using more modern methods. Differences between the angular dispersions for separate normal- and reverse-polarity data sets confirm that many older studies have not been adequately cleaned magnetically. Therefore, the use of the database for geomagnetic field modelling should be carried out with some caution. Using a VGP cut-off angle that varies with latitude, the best data set consists of 2636 results that show a smooth increase of VGP angular dispersion with latitude. Model G for palaeosecular variation, which is based on modelling of the antisymmetric (dipole) and symmetric (quadrupole) dynamo families, provides a good fit to these results.  相似文献

A paleomagnetic study of the Mull lava succession   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary. A paleomagnetic study has been made of a succession of 139 non-overlapping basaltic lavas, representing 91 per cent of the longest remaining succession of flows associated with the Paleogene Mull volcano. All the lavas have experienced considerable hydrothermal alteration, probably at up to several million years after initial magnetization and frequently with alteration to the opaque minerals and the production of new potentially magnetic phases. The question of whether directional remagnetization has taken place while preserving within-unit directional consistency and discreteness of unit mean direction is discussed. Extensive directional remagnetization is excluded as an explanation for the data. If stable directions obtained by alternating field remanence cleaning coincide with original TRM directions then a mean pole position for all temporally independent lava directions from the British Tertiary igneous province is at 71.9° N, 167.2° E, with k:22 and α95:3.0°. This pole is significantly different from the geographic pole. If the difference in palaeomagnetic and geographic poles is interpreted in terms of absolute plate motion, then 2010 km of northwards motion of the western part of the Eurasian Plate, at 3.7 cm/yr, has taken place over the last 55 Myr. This motion has implications for the geological history of the Arctic and for the complexity of mantle motions.  相似文献

Apparent polar wander in the mean-lithosphere (= no-net-rotation = no-net-torque uniform drag) reference frame is compared with apparent polar wander in the hotspot reference frame over the past 100 Myr. Palaeo-magnetic poles and plate rotations previously used to determine an apparent polar wander path for the hotspot reference frame are here used to determine an apparent polar wander path in the mean-lithosphere reference frame. We find that the two paths are similar, especially for Late Cretaceous time, when a 10°–20° shift of the pole occurred. To first-order the hotspots and lithosphere (as a whole) moved in unison relative to the palaeomagnetic axis during Late Cretaceous time. A non-dipole field explanation for the apparent shift can probably be excluded. However, either motion of the time-averaged geomagnetic axis relative to the spin axis or polar wandering could have caused this shift, the latter being the more likely explanation.  相似文献

Summary. The age of historical lava flows on the Canary Islands can be traced back at least to 1585 ad . During the last 400 years eruptions occurred at fairly regular intervals. The palaeomagnetic directions of these lavas record the ambient field direction with high precision so that an historical secular variation curve (SVC) can be constructed for the Canaries which closely resembles the curve registered at Paris. The SVC can be used as a dating tool for historical eruptions of unknown age and can probably be extended into the last 4000–5000 yr of recent volcanic activity on the Canaries.  相似文献

Measurement of samples from 154 sites in the continental sector of the Cameroon Volcanic Line yielded six palaeomagnetic poles, at 243.6°E, 84.6°N, α 95 = 6.8°; 224.3°E, 81.2°N, α 95 = 8.4°; 176.1°E, 82.0°N, α 95 = 8.5°; 164.3°E, 86.4°N, α 95 = 3.4°; 169.4°E, 82.6°N, α 95 = 4.6° and 174.7°E, 72.8°N, α 95 = 9.5°, belonging to rocks which have been dated by the K–Ar method at 0.4–0.9  Ma, 2.6  Ma, 6.5–11  Ma, 12–17  Ma, 20–24  Ma and 28–31  Ma, respectively. The results are in general agreement with other palaeomagnetic poles from Oligocene to Recent formations in Africa.
The first three poles for rocks formed between 0.4 and 11  Ma are not significantly different from the present geographical pole. Together with other African poles for the same period, this suggests that the African continent has moved very little relative to the pole since 11  Ma. The other three poles for rocks dated between 12 and 31  Ma are significantly different from the present geographical pole, showing a 5° polar deviation from the present pole in the Miocene and 13° in the Middle Oligocene.  相似文献

It is extremely valuable to study historic lava flows where the geomagnetic field at their time of extrusion is well known. In this study, two vertical sections, 16 m apart, have been sampled from the approximately 1 m thick 1960 Kilauea lava flow, Hawaii. Variations are seen in the rock-magnetic and palaeomagnetic properties between and within the two sections, indicating that there are small-scale lateral and vertical variations in the lava flow. The two sections showed different responses to microwave palaeointensity analysis. Section H6001 generally gave ideal linear behaviour on plots of natural remanent magnetization (NRM) lost against microwave-induced thermoremanent magnetization (TM RM) gained, whilst the majority of samples from H6002 showed anomalous two-slope behaviour. When all plots were interpreted by taking the best-fitting line through all points, the flow mean intensity for H6001 was 31.6 ± 3.6 μT and that for H6002 was 37.1 ± 6.4 μT, compared with the expected intensity of 36 μT. Additional historic flows need to be studied in order to ascertain whether this behaviour is typical of all lava, and whether it is best to always interpret NRM lost/TM RM gained plots by taking the line of best fit regardless of shape.  相似文献

Sequences of late Tertiary to Quaternary lava flows at six Aleutian Island sites were sampled for palaeosecular variation (PSV) measurement using palaeomagnetic methods. Due to limitations in probable time span represented by each sequence of flows and statistical constraints, data from only two sites are considered in themselves to be reliable indicators of PSV. When all the data are combined to give greater statistical significance, an angular standard deviation of palaeofield directions of = 10.8° is obtained. This is compatible with other Pacific Ocean PSV data and points to the persistence of the present secular variation low in this region at least into Quaternary time.  相似文献

40Ar/39Ar whole-rock and alkali feldspar ages demonstrate that dioritic to monzonitic dykes from Bøverbru and Lunner belong to the youngest recorded magmatic activity in the Oslo Rift region, southeast Norway. These dykes represent the terminal phase of rift and magmatic activity in the Oslo Graben, at the dawn of the Triassic (246–238 Ma).
The Bøverbru and Lunner dyke ages are statistically concordant. However, the palaeomagnetic signature of the Bøverbru dyke is complex, and directions from the margins and the interior of the dyke differ in polarity. Therefore, the new Early Triassic palaeomagnetic pole for Baltica (Eurasia) is exclusively based on the less complex Lunner dykes and contacts (palaeomagnetic pole: latitude=52.9°N, longitude=164.4°E, dp / dm =4.5 ° /7.3°). The early Triassic palaeomagnetic pole [mean age: 243±5 Ma (2 σ )] is slightly different from the Upper Carboniferous–Permian (294–274 Ma) and Kiaman-aged poles from the Oslo Rift.  相似文献

Samples collected in vertical sections from two recent (1169 AD and 1971 AD) lava flows show significant variations in both the palaeomagnetic vector and the rock magnetic characteristics. The age and the short cooling time of the flows (both are less than 3 m thick) are such that the observed range of palaeomagnetic variation is more than can reasonably be explained by secular variation. The variations in palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic characteristics appear in part to be a response to the relative proportions of two coexisting ferrimagnetic phases, one that displays a primary coarsegrained and Ti-rich composition and a second that has finer-grained, Ti-poor characteristics. The use of AF demagnetization in this study means that the latter phase will have a disproportionate influence on the palaeomagnetic results. It has been suggested elsewhere that in such a magnetic system the Ti-poor phase may represent a CRM formed at some temperature below its final Curie temperature; if so, the results of this study imply that not only does it affect the palaeointensity estimate (which requires a pure TRM) but it appears also to influence the palaeomagnetic direction to an extent that far exceeds the normal secular change that might be expected to occur during delayed acquisition. Such a result has important implications for palaeomagnetic studies that use lavas, both in the selection of a suitable sampling strategy and in the geomagnetic interpretation of palaeomagnetic variation within single flow units.  相似文献

Summary. The remanent magnetization of intrusive/extrusive rocks of the 'basement' complex of East Maio constitutes four components that define two different axes of magnetization, at around dec. 328, inc. 12 and dec. 007, inc. 14 respectively. In general, two or more components co-exist in separate specimens or sites but both axes are present most frequently in the normal sense. The NNW-striking axis, the B-axis, fits very well with the Upper Cretaceous polar wander path for Africa. It is consequently inferred that the major phase of sheet intrusions in Maio dates from this time, probably from the interval 90–70 Myr bp. Comparisons of the directional dispersions in the folded and unfolded states suggest that this injection phase post-dates the uplift of the Central Igneous Complex of the island. The second axis of magnetization, the A -axis, agrees very well with late Teritary—Quaternary palaeomagnetic data for Africa and the Canary Islands. The A -axis is therefore regarded as of secondary origin, being the consequence of a thermal/ chemical overprint during the Miocene—Pliocene volcanism on the island. The occurrence of a 50–70 Myr long period of volcanic quiescence and erosion, between the termination of the early igneous activity (Upper Cretaceous) and the rejuvenated magmatism in Miocene/Pliocene time, is compatible with similar observations in the Canary Islands. In contrast to the palaeomagnetic conclusions, the K/Ar data only give ages around 10 Myr. The unusually young isotope dates are regarded as being due to an almost complete age resetting and are seen in conjuction with the overprinted magnetization. This explanation is further supported by the fact that K/Ar results of pillow lavas underlying Upper Jurassic limestones only give Tertiary ages.  相似文献
