A numerical study of characteristics of the front formed by cooling of the sea surface and inflow of the fresh water is made within a vertical two-dimensional plane without the rotation of the earth. The convective adjustment technique is employed to parameterize the small scale convective overturning process.A sharply edged shelf causing the marked difference of the heat capacity of the water columns between over the shelf (50 m depth) and in the deeper region (150 m depth), is responsible for the formation of a thermal front over the shelf edge and two cell circulations of the same sense with each other adjoining at the frontal region.Inflow of the fresh water at the upper region of the coast (which is equivalently replaced by the outflow of the salt from the same region) adds a circulation of the opposite sense to the above ones, which transports the water of low salinity and low temperature offshore and forms a sharp front both of temperature and salinity with the offshore water of high salinity and high temperature. This thermohaline front or Oceanic front has a remarkable character that the horizontal density gradient is minimal at the front due to the counteracting contributions of temperature and salinity to density. Response of this front to the sudden ceases of the surface cooling and the fresh water supply, is also studied in order to understand its transient behaviors.  相似文献

The systematic and random errors of reconstruction of the climatic variability of temperature and salinity in the Black Sea are analyzed on the basis of the archival deep-water data accumulated in 1955–1998. It is shown that, in order to describe the space variability of large-scale deep-water characteristics of the temperature fields with reasonable accuracy, one can use both the data of standard hydrological measurements and the CTD data. In this case, the systematic errors are practically indistinguishable against the background of random errors whose characteristic level is equal to 0.03°C. The random errors of evaluation of salinity are as large as about 0.04 and the corresponding systematic errors are not distinguished. The available archive of the data of deep-water measurements enables one to select space structures with characteristic dimensions of 2° in the latitudinal and longitudinal directions with temperature and salinity inhomogeneities exceeding 0.0035°C and 0.004, respectively. This is sufficient to confirm the fact of elevation of the bottom temperature in the central part of the sea is by about 0.015°C as compared with its peripheral parts.  相似文献

A high-resolution sediment core (sedimentation rate ~2 mm/year) from the German Bight was analysed for its foraminiferal stable oxygen isotope (18O) composition. These data were correlated with instrumental summer sea-surface temperature and salinity data from the nearby island of Helgoland, reaching back 100 years. Comparing the isotope data with the instrumental records reveals a distinct 18O–salinity relationship (18O=0.34×S–9.36; r=0.86) for the German Bight, where salinity is mainly driven by freshwater input from the Elbe River. Thus, these findings provide the possibility for future regional paleosalinity and paleodischarge reconstructions for times far beyond the instrumental timescale.  相似文献

From observations of ice cover, temperature, salinity, currents and nitrate, it is evident that along-shelf variability was significant over the middle shelf of the eastern Bering Sea, but less distinct than that observed in the cross-shelf domains. Along the 70-m isobath, three zones were evident in the summer: the southeastern cold pool (centered at 57°N); an intermediate zone, consisting of warmer water, with weaker stratification; and the northern cold pool, extending northward from 58°N. Small-scale (20 km) horizontal features that persisted for months were common. Nutrient concentrations were related to salinity and were replenished more uniformly over the southern shelf, than north of the Pribilof Islands. Although mean currents were weak (1 cm s−1), short energetic advective events impacted the temperature and salinity structure.  相似文献

East-west vertical sections centered on Kinmei Seamount (35N, 172E) of potential temperature, salinity, and oxygen, based on recent standard hydrographic measurements, and vertical profiles ofin situ temperature and density ( 4) east of the seamount, based on STD data, show contrasting variability in the deep water characteristics east and west of the seamount. These data are consistent with horizontal variations in water mass properties (temperature-salinity and temperature-oxygen curves) east of the seamount between 2,600–3,900 m but not west of the seamount. East of the seamount on surfaces of constant potential temperature (or density) salinity and oxygen are higher at a station 200 km from the seamount than at stations on either side. From these relations and from known deep water properties of the North Pacific, it is suggested that east of the seamount, between 2,600–3,900 m, the observations are consistent with northward flow, which is interpreted to be a western boundary current with an east-west scale of about 300 km.  相似文献

Intensive Pyropia aquaculture in the coast of southwestern Yellow Sea and its subsequent waste, including disposed Ulva prolifera, was speculated to be one of the major sources for the large-scale green tide proceeding in the Yellow Sea since 2007. It was, however, unclear how the detached U. prolifera responded and resumed growing after they detached from its original habitat. In this study, we investigated the growth and photosynthetic response of the detached U. prolifera to various temperature, salinity and irradiance in the laboratory. The photosynthetic rate of the detached U. prolifera was significantly higher at moderate temperature levels(14–27°C)and high salinity(26–32), with optimum at 23°C and 32. Both low(14°C) and highest temperature(40°C), as well as low salinity(8) had adverse effects on the photosynthesis. Compared with the other Ulva species, U. prolifera showed higher saturated irradiance and no significant photoinhibition at high irradiance, indicating the great tolerance of U. prolifera to the high irradiance. The dense branch and complex structure of floating mats could help protect the thalli and reduce photoinhibition in field. Furthermore, temperature exerted a stronger influence on the growth rate of the detached U. prolifera compared to salinity. Overall, the high growth rate of this detached U. prolifera(10.6%–16.7% d~(–1)) at a wide range of temperature(5–32°C) and salinity(14–32) implied its blooming tendency with fluctuated salinity and temperature during floating. The environmental parameters in the southwestern Yellow Sea at the beginning of green tide were coincident with the optimal conditions for the detached U. prolifera.  相似文献

The winter water mass distributions in the western Gulf of Mexico, affected by the collision of a Loop Current anticyclonic ring, during January 1984 are analyzed. Two principal modes of Gulf Common Water (GCW) formation, arising from the dilution of the Caribbean Subtropical Underwater (SUW), are identified. Within the western gulf continental slope to the east of Tamiahua, the GCW is formed by the collision of anticyclonic rings. During these collision events, the SUW, entrapped at the core (200 m depth) of these features, is diluted by low salinity (36.1S36.3) water from the uppermost layer of the main thermocline. The end product of this mixture is GCW, which is further diluted by low salinity coastal water within the western gulf continental shelf. The second GCW formation mode is associated to the northerly wind stress which propagates over the western gulf during winter. During January, 1984, this wind stress gave rise to a 175 m mixed layer. This convective mixing destroyed the static stability of the summer thermocline and allowed for the partial dilution of the SUW with low salinity (S36.3) water from the western gulf continental shelf. Within the western gulf's upper 2000 m, the following water masses were identified to be present: GCW, SUW, Tropical Atlantic Central Water and associated dissolved oxygen minimum stratum, Antarctic Intermediate Water remnant, a mixture of the Caribbean Intermediate Water and the upper portion of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), and the NADW itself. The topographic distribution of these water masses' strata was dictated by the cyclonic-anticyclonic baroclinic circulation that evolved from the anticyclone's collision to the east of Tamiahua. Between the cyclonic and anticyclonic domains, the maximum pressure differential of these water masses' core occurrences was 150 to 280 dbar. The topographic transition zone defined by these strata occurred between the cyclonic and anticyclonic domains and coincided unambiguously with the anticyclone's collision zone. Within the continental shelf, we identified low temperature (12°C) and low salinity (31) coastal waters contributed by river runoff. Driven by the northerly wind stress, these coastal waters were advected toward the south hugging the coastline. The coastal and continental shelf waters demarcated a sea surface temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen discontinuity region that coincided with the horizontal baroclinic flow transition zone associated to the anticyclone's collision.  相似文献

Index species of zooplankton of the Oyashio water are found in and beneath the salinity minimum layer in Sagami Bay. In order to clarify the intrusion path of the intermediate Oyashio Water (or the water of the Mixed Water Region), the oceanographic conditions off the Boso Peninsula are studied by using available hydrographic data obtained mainly by Japan Meteorological Agency. The cross-sectional salinity distribution along KJ line which extends southeastward from off the tip of the peninsula always indicates the existence of a low salinity patch just off the coast in the salinity minimum layer. This water is well separated from the offshore low salinity water which is considered as the water in the western margin of the so-called North Pacific Intermediate Water. We refer to the former water as the coastal salinity-minimum-layer (SML) water and to the latter as the offshore SML water. The coastal SML water is usually bounded by the current zone of the Kuroshio. The existence of the coastal SML water seems to indicate the possible pathway of the intermediate Oyashio water along the Boso Peninsula into Sagami Bay. The detailed water type analysis is made in T-S plane, S-st plane, and O2-st plane. There is no significant difference in distribution ranges of the water types between the coastal SML water and the offshore SML water. However, the water types of the coastal SML water is not uniformly distributed, and the water can be classified into two groups: group A with relatively high oxygen content and relatively low salinity value and group B with relatively low oxygen content and relatively high salinity value. The important values in the ocean's climatology — the norms of the main parameters of seawater such as temperature, salinity, density and dissolved oxygen — have been studied. The results of computation of the multi-annual average values of these parameters were analysed for the entire world's oceans and their separate regions. General regularities adherent in the global structure of the main hydrophysical and hydrochemical fields are revealed. Within the framework of the integral model in isopycnic coordinates including the upper mixed layer, we study the rearrangement of temperature and salinity fields in the Dead Sea. It is forced by the variability of atmospheric factors and mass fluxes through the lateral boundaries of the basin, which are connected with the freshwater run-off to the sea and the outflow from the sea to the shallow south bay, where evaporator installations for salt extraction are located. Such factors as solar radiation, wind velocity, air temperature, and relative humidity are prescribed. Evaporation is calculated with the use of a bulk formula, whereas precipitation intensity and discharge through the lateral boundaries are determined as functions of the sea level obtained from observations. This model reflects the specific character of the Dead Sea and takes into account the effect of water salinity on its evaporation, salt concretion, and mechanical evaporation. Comparison with the data of observations shows that the proposed model fairly precisely describes the observed specific features of the thermohaline water structure in the meromictic (1992–1996) and holomictic (1996–2000) periods.  相似文献

Estimates of vertical turbulent diffusion coefficient (K t ) in the Black Sea pycnohalocline have been obtained from data of simultaneous observations of seawater temperature, salinity, density, and horizontal current velocity, obtained in the northeastern part of the Black Sea during 2013–2014 with a moored Aqualog profiler. A Munk and Andersson (1948) type parameterization, adapted for the Black Sea environment, is proposed for calculating K t . Strong short-period (several days) variability of turbulent exchange is revealed, induced by vertical shear variations of the current velocity.  相似文献

Two strings of moored current meters deployed between March 1993 and May 1994, together with monthly CTD surveys, provide the first comprehensive set of observations over the seasonal cycle in the Clyde Sea. In the summer, a strong thermal stratification maintained a partial isolation of the deep waters. In winter, the stratification was weaker, and a 1 °C temperature inversion was persistent from November to the end of March. Rapid inflow of dense water from the North Channel of the Irish Sea served to re-establish the strong stratification in the spring. The mean rate of exchange was estimated from the salinity (practical salinity scale) and mass budgets to be 1·1×104 m3 s−1, indicating an average flushing time for the Clyde Sea of 3–4 months.Episodic increases in deep water salinity indicated that bottom water renewal occurred throughout the winter. Intense renewal events were observed in March 1993 and February 1994, when the North Channel density was near its seasonal maximum, and were coincident with periods of high wind stress. In the month prior to these rapid spring inflows, the basin bottom salinity reached its seasonal minimum, indicating that the effects of mixing dominated over renewal at this time. A marked inflow in the summer was inferred from the salinity budget, and observed as a salinity increase at a depth of 90 m. A 2-layer flow was observed in the Arran Deep basin throughout the year, the surface flow forming part of a clockwise circulation about Arran, with an opposing bottom layer circulation. This surface circulation prevents freshwater from entering the Kilbrannan Sound, leaving this area relatively susceptible to deep water mixing by the wind.At a station in the north of the basin, the internal tidal current was observed to have an amplitude of 2–3 cm s−1, which is half the amplitude of the barotropic tide. The energy available to mix the water column mixing associated with the internal tide at this position is estimated to be 0·01 mWm−2, which is 2 orders of magnitude less than wind mixing. The kinetic energy density in the Clyde Sea was found to be predominantly in low frequency oscillations (<1·0 cycles per day), the seasonal variation exhibiting some correlation with the wind.  相似文献

The topographic effect of the Izu Ridge on the horizontal distribution of the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) south of Japan has been studied using observational data obtained by the Seisui-Maru of Mie University (Mie Univ. data) and those compiled by Japan Oceanographic Data Center (JODC data). Both data sets show that water of salinity less than 34.1 psu on potential density () surface of 26.8 is confined to the eastern side of the Izu Ridge, while water of salinity less than 34.2 psu is confined to the southern area over the Izu Ridge at a depth greater than 2000 m and to the southeastern area in the Shikoku Basin. It is also shown by T-S analysis of Mie Univ. data over the Izu Ridge that water of salinity less than 34.2 psu dominates south of 30°N, where the depth of the Izu Ridge is deeper than 2000 m and NPIW can intrude westward over the Izu Ridge. JODC data reveal that relatively large standard deviations of the salinity on surface of 26.7, 26.8 and 26.9 are detected along the mean current path of the Kuroshio and the Kuroshio Extension. Almost all of the standard deviations are less than 0.05 psu in other area with the NPIW, which shows that the time variation in the salinity can be neglected. This observational evidence shows that the topographic effect of the Izu Ridge on the horizontal distribution of the NPIW, which is formed east of 145°E by the mixing of the Kuroshio water and the Oyashio water, is prominent north of 30°N with a depth shallower than 2000 m.  相似文献

We present the results of analysis of the seasonal variability of the climatic cold intermediate layer based on a complex approach with the use of series of successive changes in the hydrophysical parameters computed according to the model with assimilation of the climatic fields of temperature and salinity. We analyze some mechanisms of formation of the cold intermediate layer. It is discovered that the layer of cold waters, which is continuous after regeneration and transformation in the entire deep-water area of the sea, becomes discontinuous at the end of the year (October–November). One of the possible mechanisms responsible for the appearance of discontinuities is discussed.  相似文献

Based on mean multiyear temperature and salinity data structural zones and layers are isolated. Within their limits there are favourable conditions for the development of processes such as layer convection and salt fingers. It is shown that distribution of their parameters is conditioned by location of intermediate water mass boundaries and front interfaces. Stability of the density ratio valueR for various areas is revealed. The obtained results are in good agreement with STD=sounding data. The Aral Sea is an important water area both for monitoring and oceanological studies, because its salinity and salt composition strongly differ from the oceanic. We offer a semiempiric calculation method of electric conductivity and the coefficient of its temperature dependence k judging from the ionic composition of water. The properties of the solution are considered as the sum of properties of seven binary salts taken based on the ionic composition of the solution. The MgSO4 concentration is thought to be the highest possible, which makes the salt concentration nearly unambiguous. In a salinity range of 46–120‰ and temperature range of 5–25°C (2002–2009), the standard deviation of the calculated and measured electric conductivity was 2.9%. To refine the calculation of salinity from electric conductivity measurements using the “oceanic” formula, we suggest its preliminary reduction to a constant temperature (20°C) using the measured or calculated coefficient k.  相似文献

The distribution of phytoplankton biomass in the plume of the Amazon River over the Brazilian continental shelf is analyzed by the use of multiple regression. Previous attempts to assess how different parameters control phytoplankton biomass have used pairwise correlations. A multiple regression approach, however, allows the elucidation of collinearity between these parameters. This approach reveals that phytoplankton biomass may be predicted largely by the following three groups of collinear variables that resemble the factors of factor analysis: suspended-sediment concentration and transparency (which generally describe irradiance availability), salinity and temperature (which describe vertical stratification, a measure of water-column stability), and the ambient concentrations of nutrients (phosphate, nitrate, silicic acid, and nitrite). The effects of water clarity and nutrients have been previously described, but the importance of vertical stability has never been separated from the other two. Additional important single variables were oxygen, ammonia, and urea. The strength of the contribution of particular variables to a regression model depends on the season of the cruise and hence on the volume of riverine discharge.  相似文献

In this paper, a time-dependent dynamic equation for the potential energy anomaly, , is rigorously derived from dynamic equations for potential temperature and salinity, the continuity equation and the equation of state for sea water. The terms locally changing are (A) the -advection, (B) the depth-mean straining, (C) the non-mean straining, (D) the vertical advection, (E) the vertical mixing, (F) surface and bottom density fluxes, (G) inner sources of density e.g. due to absorption of solar radiation and the non-linearity of the equation of state, and (H) horizontal divergence of horizontal turbulent density fluxes. In order to derive the equation in concise form, a vertical velocity (linearly varying with depth) with respect to depth-proportional vertical coordinates had to be defined. The evaluation of the terms in the -equation is then carried out for a one-dimensional tidal straining study and a two-dimensional estuarine circulation study. Comparisons to empirical estimates for these terms are made for the one-dimensional study. It is concluded that the -equation provides a general reference for empirical bulk parameterisations of stratification and mixing processes in estuaries and coastal seas and that it is a tool for complete analysis of the relevant terms from numerical models.  相似文献
