Summary. The Chandler wobble Q w, as obtained from the astronomical data cannot be equated with the Q m of the source of damping, as an examination of Chandler wobble energetics reveals. We find that if dissipation occurs in the mantle then Q w≃ 9 Q m, implying that either the mantle Q is frequency dependent or the wobble Q is much larger than 100. If the dissipation is in the oceans then Q w≃ 20 Q o, and the pole tide must be far from equilibrium.  相似文献

A splined ILS/IPMS data set (1900–1973) from the most homogeneous values available has been analysed by the maximum entropy method of Burg. Principal conclusions are: (1) the spectral character of the Chandler wobble is a single broad peak, (2) the period is 432·95 ± 1·02 mean solar days and, (3) the Q w is 36±10. Measurements indicate that Q w is non- stationary in time.  相似文献

The period and Q of the Chandler wobble   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary. We have extended our calculation of the theoretical period of the Chandler wobble to account for the non-hydrostatic portion of the Earth's equatorial bulge and the effect of the fluid core upon the lengthening of the period due to the pole tide. We find the theoretical period of a realistic perfectly elastic Earth with an equilibrium pole tide to be 426.7 sidereal days, which is 8.5 day shorter than the observed period of 435.2 day. Using Rayleigh's principle for a rotating Earth, we exploit this discrepancy together with the observed Chandler Q to place constraints on the frequency dependence of mantle anelasticity. If Qμ in the mantle varies with frequency σ as σα between 30 s and 14 months and if Qμ in the lower mantle is of order 225 at 30 s, we find that 0.04 ρα≤ 0.11; if instead Qμ in the lower mantle is of order 350 near 200 s, we find that 0.11 ≤α≤ 0.19. In all cases these limits arise from exceeding the 68 per cent confidence limits of ± 2.6 day in the observed period. Since slight departures from an equilibrium pole tide affect the Q much more strongly than the period we believe these limits to be robust.  相似文献

Summary. We investigate one-dimensional waves in a standard linear solid for geophysically relevant ranges of the parameters. The critical parameters are shown to be T*= tu/Qm where t u is the travel time and Qm the quality factor in the absorption band, and τ−1 m , the high-frequency cut-off of the relaxation spectrum. The visual onset time, rise time, peak time, and peak amplitude are studied as functions of T* and τ m. For very small τ m , this model is shown to be very similar to previously proposed attenuation models. As τ m grows past a critical value which depends on T* , the character of the attenuated pulse changes. Seismological implications of this model may be inferred by comparing body wave travel times with a'one second'earth model derived from long-period observations and corrected for attenuation effects assuming a frequency independent Q over the seismic band. From such a comparison we speculate that there may be a gap in the relaxation spectrum of the Earth's mantle for relaxation times shorter than about one second. However, observational constraints from the attenuation of body waves suggest that such a gap might in fact occur at higher frequencies. Such a hypothesis would imply a frequency dependence of Q in the Earth's mantle for short-period body waves.  相似文献

The attenuation mechanism of seismic waves in northwestern Himalayas   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We analysed local earthquake waveforms recorded on a broad-band seismic network in northwestern Himalayas to compute the intrinsic and scattered attenuation parameters from coda waves. Similar to other tectonically active and heterogeneous regions, attenuation-frequency relation for western Himalaya is   Q −1 c = (113 ± 7)  f (1.01±0.05)  where   Qc   is the coda Q parameter. Intrinsic  ( Q −1 i )  and scattering  ( Q −1 s )  attenuations was separated using   Qc   and direct S -wave Q data  ( Qd )  . It is observed that estimated   Q −1 c   is close to   Q −1 i   and both of them are much larger than   Q −1 s   suggesting that coda decay is predominantly caused by intrinsic attenuation. At higher frequencies, both the attenuation parameters   Qc   and,   Qd   are similar indicating that coda is predominantly composed of back-scattered S waves at these frequencies.  相似文献

Summary. The asymptotic properties of spheroidal mode dispersion at high frequency for fixed phase velocity are related to the intercept times τβ( p ) for P and S waves. If the mode eigenfrequency and the ratio of horizontal to vertical displacement at the surface for the mode are known τα( p ) and τβ( p ) may be separately estimated. If discontinuities exist in the velocity model then 'solotone' effects occur, in frequency at fixed slowness, and in τα( p ), τβ( p ) estimated from the mode dispersion as a function of slowness. The coupling of P and S waves in the spheroidal modes means that the interaction of P waves with upper-mantle discontinuities affects also the estimates of the S wave τβ( p ) values for which the corresponding turning points lie in the lower mantle. The asymptotic formalism also shows that sharp pulses formed by superposition of spheroidal modes correspond to multiple PS reflections.
A study of τα( p ), τβ( p ) estimates derived from spheroidal modes with periods from 45–50s, calculated for model 1066B, shows that even in the presence of strong upper-mantle discontinuities the errors in intercept time are only about one-tenth of a period. The asymptotic properties may there-for provide a useful means of estimating intercept times from modes with a few seconds period as a supplement to travel-time methods.  相似文献

We explore a practical approach to earthquake early warning in southern California by determining a ground-motion period parameter  τ c   and a high-pass filtered displacement amplitude parameter Pd from the initial 3 s of the P waveforms recorded at the Southern California Seismic Network stations for earthquakes with M > 4.0. At a given site, we estimate the magnitude of an event from  τ c   and the peak ground-motion velocity ( PGV ) from Pd . The incoming three-component signals are recursively converted to ground acceleration, velocity and displacement. The displacements are recursively filtered with a one-way Butterworth high-pass filter with a cut-off frequency of 0.075 Hz, and a P -wave trigger is constantly monitored. When a trigger occurs,  τ c   and Pd are computed. We found the relationship between  τ c   and magnitude ( M ) for southern California, and between Pd and PGV for both southern California and Taiwan. These two relationships can be used to detect the occurrence of a major earthquake and provide onsite warning in the area around the station where onset of strong ground motion is expected within seconds after the arrival of the P wave. When the station density is high, the methods can be applied to multistation data to increase the robustness of onsite early warning and to add the regional warning approach. In an ideal situation, such warnings would be available within 10 s of the origin time of a large earthquake whose subsequent ground motion may last for tens of seconds.  相似文献

The investigation of L g attenuation characteristics in the region bounding the western branch of the East African rift system using digital recordings from a seismic network located along the rift between Lake Rukwa and Lake Malawi is reported. A set of 24 recordings of L g waves from 12 regional earthquakes has been used for the determination of anelastic attenuation, Q Lg , and regional body-wave magnitude, m b Lg , scale. The events used have body-wave magnitudes, m b , between 4.6 and 5.5, which have been determined teleseismically and listed in ISC bulletins. The data were time-domain displacement amplitudes measured at 10 different frequencies (0.7–5.0  Hz). Q Lg and its frequency dependence, η , in the region can be represented in the form Q Lg = (186.2 ± 6.5)  f  (0.78±0.05). This model is in agreement with models established in other active tectonic regions. The L g -wave-based magnitude formula for the region is given by m b Lg = log   A + (3.76 ± 0.38)  log   D − (5.72 ± 1.06), where A is a half-peak-to-peak maximum amplitude of the 1  s L g wave amplitude in microns and D is the epicentral distance in kilometres. Magnitude results for the 12 regional earthquakes tested are in good agreement with the ISC body-wave magnitude scale.  相似文献

Summary. The inverse gravity potential problem consists in the determination of the form and the density of the body by its exterior gravity potential. We describe two similar classes of bodies for which this problem has a unique constructive solution.
(1) The first class contains the cylindrical bodies with finite length, arbitrary form of section and ρ( R , ø, z) =ρ1( z )ρ2( R , ø) density distribution, where z is the cylindrical coordinate; R , ø are the polar coordinates in a section plane. This class is important for prospecting geophysics in that it allows us to determine in a unique and constructive way, the function ρ1( R , ø), the length, form and orientation of the cylinder if we know the function ρ1( z ) and the exterior potential. The classical moment problem of functions is the basis for the solution of this problem.
(2) The analogous problem for the class of the spherical cylinders, or bodies bounded by arbitrary similar sections of two different concentric spheres and the radial lateral surface, appears when bodies of planetary size are studied. (An example of these bodies would be the Moon mascons.) The density distribution of these cylinders is ρ(τ, θ, ø) =ρ1(τ)ρ2(θ, ø) where τ, θ, ø are the spherical coordinates. The function ρ1(θ, ø), length and form of spherical sections can be uniquely determined by exterior potential if we know the function ρ1(τ). We propose a new constructive method for harmonic continuation of the gravity potential into the region containing the perturbing masses for the solution of the problem.  相似文献

Measurement of samples from 154 sites in the continental sector of the Cameroon Volcanic Line yielded six palaeomagnetic poles, at 243.6°E, 84.6°N, α 95 = 6.8°; 224.3°E, 81.2°N, α 95 = 8.4°; 176.1°E, 82.0°N, α 95 = 8.5°; 164.3°E, 86.4°N, α 95 = 3.4°; 169.4°E, 82.6°N, α 95 = 4.6° and 174.7°E, 72.8°N, α 95 = 9.5°, belonging to rocks which have been dated by the K–Ar method at 0.4–0.9  Ma, 2.6  Ma, 6.5–11  Ma, 12–17  Ma, 20–24  Ma and 28–31  Ma, respectively. The results are in general agreement with other palaeomagnetic poles from Oligocene to Recent formations in Africa.
The first three poles for rocks formed between 0.4 and 11  Ma are not significantly different from the present geographical pole. Together with other African poles for the same period, this suggests that the African continent has moved very little relative to the pole since 11  Ma. The other three poles for rocks dated between 12 and 31  Ma are significantly different from the present geographical pole, showing a 5° polar deviation from the present pole in the Miocene and 13° in the Middle Oligocene.  相似文献

Coercive force of single crystals of magnetite at low temperatures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The temperature dependence of coercive force H c was studied on well-characterized and stoichiometric millimetre-sized single crystals of magnetite at a series of 16 temperatures from 300 to 10 K using a SQUID magnetometer. H c decreases gradually with cooling to the isotropic temperature, T i = 130 K, where the first magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K 1 becomes zero. H c exhibits a sharp increase at the Verwey transition, T v = 120 K, where the structure changes from cubic to monoclinic. In crossing the Verwey transition, H c increases by more than two orders of magnitude, from 20 μT to 2.4 mT, and the shape of the hysteresis loops becomes wasp-waisted.
Observed coercivity between 300 K and 170 K varies with temperature as λ s / M s , where λ s is the magnetostriction constant and M s is the saturation magnetization, indicating that the coercivity in MD magnetite is controlled mainly by internal stress associated with dislocations or other crystal defects. It seems likely that the stable single-domain-like magnetic memory observed in large MD magnetite crystals is due to magnetoelastically pinned domain walls. The discontinuous change in H c at the Verwey transition is controlled by abrupt changes in magnetocrystalline and magnetostriction constants due to crystal deformation from cubic to monoclinic structure.  相似文献

Summary. Differences between estimated average heat flow values for the Mesozoic and Cenozoic formations ( Q 1) and estimated average heat flow values for the Palaeozoic formations below the erosional unconformity ( Q 2) are calculated for the Alberta part of the western Canadian sedimentary basin. Significant heat flow differences exist for these two intervals and the map of Δ Q = Q 1– Q 2 shows that Q 2 is generally greater than Q 1 in the western and south-western part of Alberta, while in the northern part of the province Q 2 is generally less than Q 1. The regional variations of Δ Q are large, with standard deviation of 26 mW m−2 and average value –13.5 mW m−2. A regional trend of Δ Q correlates with topographic relief and the hydraulic head variations in the basin. It is shown that there is a heat flow increase with depth in water recharge areas and a decrease in heat flow with depth in the low topographic elevation water discharge areas when comparing the average heat flow in Mesozoic + Cenozoic and Palaeozoic formations.  相似文献

Summary. Using nine IDA records for the Indonesian earthquake of 1977 August 19, we have formed an optimal linear combination of the records and have measured the frequency and Q of 0 S 0 and 1 S 0. The frequency was measured using the moment ratio method. The attenuation was measured by the minimum width method and by the time-lapse method. The frequency and attenuation were measured simultaneously by varying them to obtain a best fit to the data. A 2000-hr stack, the sum of nine individual records, for 0 S 0 gave a frequency of 0.814664 mHz±4 ppm. The values for the Q of 0 S 0 for the three different methods of measurement were 5600,5833 and 5700, respectively. The error in the estimates of Q -1 is about 5 per cent for the minimum power method. For 1 S 0 a 300-hr stack yielded a frequency of 1.63151 mHz±30 ppm. The values of Q for this mode were 1960, 1800 and 1850, respectively, with an error in Q -1 of about 12 per cent for the minimum power method.  相似文献

Summary. The results of previous work by the authors is used to remove most of the effects of ocean and atmospheric loading from an 18-month Earth gravity-tide record. The remaining signal is examined for additional influence of ocean and atmosphere and for evidence of the frequency-dependence of the response of the solid earth. Variations in time of the measured tides are shown to result from the atmospheric tide at S 2 and appear to result from variations in ocean tides at other frequencies. The frequency-dependence of the solid earth response near 1 cycle per siderial day is found to be consistent with the nearly diurnal free wobble. However, the influence of the ocean on the small but crucial Ψ1 tide is uncertain. Anomalous responses are observed at several other frequencies but except for the case of ρ1 it is argued that anomalous ocean tides are plausible and could therefore explain the observations.  相似文献

Mammoth Mountain is a seismically active volcano 200 000 to 50 000 years old, situated on the southwestern rim of Long Valley caldera, California. Since 1989 it has shown evidence of unrest in the form of earthquake swarms (Hill et al. 1990), volcanic 'long-period' earthquakes (Pitt & Hill 1994), increased output of magmatic 3He (Sorey et al. 1993) and the emission of about 500 tonnes day −1 of CO2 (Farrar et al. 1995; Hill 1996; M. Sorey, personal communication, 1997), which has killed trees and poses a threat to human safety. Local-earthquake tomography shows that in mid-1989 areas of subsequent tree-kill were underlain by extensive regions where the ratio of the compressional and shear elastic-wave speeds VP/VS was about 9 per cent lower than in the surrounding rocks. Theory (Mavko & Mukerji 1995), experiment (Ito, DeVilbiss & Nur 1979), and experience at other geothermal/volcanic areas (Julian et al. 1996) and at petroleum reservoirs (Harris et al. 1996) indicate that VP/VS is sensitive to pore-fluid compressibility, through its effect on VP . The observed VP/VS anomaly is probably caused directly by CO2, and seismic VP/VS tomography is thus a promising tool for monitoring gas concentration and movement in volcanoes, which may in turn be related to volcanic activity.  相似文献

Summary. Spectral attenuation of coda waves has been studied in the range 2–40 Hz from local events recorded in the western Pyrenean range from 1980 to 1982. Q c was obtained using a single scattering model of S -waves for different segments of the coda. An increase of Q c with lapse time was found and attributed to a rapid increase of Q β with depth.
Three groups of events were selected from distinct focal areas. Two data sets are mainly composed of aftershocks of moderate earthquakes of magnitude 5.1 and 4.8, respectively. No moderate earthquake occurred in the third area in the few years preceding or following the selected events. Use of stations close to epicentres allowed sampling of the coda at very short lapse times and then study of small, distinct scattering volumes. Noticeable differences were found between the three studied areas and attributed to spatial rather than temporal variations.
The Q c frequency dependence was studied according to Q c= qf α. α is found to range from 0.7 to 1.1 and q from 30 to 140. These values are in agreement with those found in other tectonic areas. It is shown that scattering is the dominant attenuation process below 10Hz.  相似文献

We report on calculations of the on-shore run-up of waves that might be generated by the impact of subkilometre asteroids into the deep ocean. The calculations were done with the COULWAVE code, which models the propagation and shore-interaction of non-linear moderate- to long-wavelength waves  ( kh < π)  using the extended Boussinesq approximation. We carried out run-up calculations for several different situations: (1) laboratory-scale monochromatic wave trains onto simple slopes; (2) 10–100 m monochromatic wave trains onto simple slopes; (3) 10–100 m monochromatic wave trains onto a compound slope representing a typical bathymetric profile of the Pacific coast of North America; (4) time-variable scaled trains generated by the collapse of an impact cavity in deep water onto simple slopes and (5) full-amplitude trains onto the Pacific coast profile. For the last case, we also investigated the effects of bottom friction on the run-up. For all cases, we compare our results with the so-called 'Irribaren scaling': The relative run-up   R / H 0=ξ= s ( H 0/ L 0)−1/2  , where the run-up is   R , H 0  is the deep-water waveheight, L 0 is the deep-water wavelength, s is the slope and ξ is a dimensionless quantity known as the Irribaren number. Our results suggest that Irribaren scaling breaks down for shallow slopes   s ≤ 0.01  when  ξ < 0.1 − 0.2  , below which   R / H 0  is approximately constant. This regime corresponds to steep waves and very shallow slopes, which are the most relevant for impact tsunami, but also the most difficult to access experimentally.  相似文献

We propose the use of ℓ1 regularization in a wavelet basis for the solution of linearized seismic tomography problems   A m = d   , allowing for the possibility of sharp discontinuities superimposed on a smoothly varying background. An iterative method is used to find a sparse solution m that contains no more fine-scale structure than is necessary to fit the data d to within its assigned errors.  相似文献

Focal mechanisms of small earthquakes with magnitudes of about 3 in the SE Brazilian shield are calculated using S / P amplitude ratios. Low attenuation ( Q p from 400 to 800) in the shield upper-crustal layers allowed sharp S arrivals to be recorded up to distances of 100 km. Besides P -wave polarities, SH -wave first motions were also used to constrain the nodal-plane orientations. Normal and reverse faulting mechanisms with strike-slip components were found. The inversion of four mechanisms to estimate the stress tensor indicated a strike-slip stress regime with roughly E–W-orientated σ 1 and N–S σ 3. Both the orientations and the shape factor ( φ =0.7) of the inverted stress are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions for that part of Brazil from the driving-force model of Coblentz & Richardson (1996) . Good agreement with the nature of the stress, as well as its orientation, was also found for the model of Meijer (1995) . Both of these theoretical models include spreading stresses along the continent/ocean lithospheric transition. Because the earthquakes are more than 300 km from the continental shelf they should not be affected by the local flexural forces caused by sediment load in the marginal basins. The agreement between observed and theoretical stresses then confirms the importance of continental spreading forces in modelling intraplate stresses.  相似文献
