The spectral characteristics of shallow water waves with significant wave height more than 2 m based on the data collected along the Indian coast is examined. It was found that the value of Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) parameters (α and γ) increases with significant wave height and mean wave period and decreases with spectral peak period. The estimated average value (0.0027 and 1.63) of the JONSWAP parameters, α and γ were less than the generally recommended values of 0.0081 and 3.3, respectively. By carrying out a multi-regression analysis, an empirical equation is arrived relating the JONSWAP parameters with significant wave height, peak wave period and mean wave period. It was found that the Scott spectra underestimate the maximum spectral energy of high waves. The study shows that the measured wave spectra can be represented by JONSWAP spectra with the JONSWAP parameters estimated based on the equation proposed in this paper.  相似文献

Two models, a spectral refraction model (Longuet-Higgins) and a parabolic equation method (PEM) refraction-diffraction model (Kirby), are used to simulate the propagation of surface gravity waves across the Southern California Bight. The Bight contains numerous offshore islands and shoals and is significantly larger (≈ 300 km by 300 km) than regions typically studied with these models. The effects of complex bathymetry on the transformation of incident wave directional spectra, S0(f,θ0), which are very narrow in both frequency and direction are difficult to model accurately. As S0(f,θ0) becomes broader in both dimensions, agreement between the models improves and the spectra predicted at coastal sites become less sensitive to errors in the bathymetry grid, to tidal changes in the mean water depth, and to uncertainty in S0(f,θ0) itself. The smoothing associated with even relatively narrow (0.01 Hz-5° bandwidth) S0(f,θ0) is usually sufficient to bring the model predictions of shallow water energy into at least qualitative agreement. However, neither model is accurate at highly sheltered sites. The importance of diffraction degrades the predictions of the refraction model, and a positive bias [O (10%) of the deep ocean energy] in the refraction-diffraction model estimates, believed to stem from numerical “noise” (Kirby), may be comparable to the low wave energy. The best agreement between the predicted spectra generally occurs at moderately exposed locations in deeper waters within the Bight, away from shallow water diffractive effects and in the far-field of the islands. In these cases, the differences between the models are small, comparable to the errors caused by tidal fluctuations in water depth as waves propagate across the Bight. The accuracy of predicted energies at these sites is likely to be limited by the uncertainty in specifying S0(f,θ0).  相似文献

An extensive database of one-dimensional spectra observed during the passage of hurricanes is examined. Spectra recorded within eight times the radius to maximum winds of the centers of hurricanes are unimodal and remarkably similar to previously recorded fetch limited spectra. Parametric spectral forms such as JONSWAP and that of Donelan et al. approximate the data well. In addition, the functional dependence of the spectral parameters α and γ on the inverse wave age is consistent with that observed under fetch limited conditions. It is concluded that the similarity of the hurricane wave spectra to those observed for simpler fetch limited spectra is largely due to the effects of nonlinear interactions. The shape stabilizing effects of the nonlinear interactions reshape spectra consisting of a mix of swell and wind-sea to conform with typical one-dimensional fetch limited wind-sea forms.  相似文献

Microstructure measurements in natural waters: Methodology and applications   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Modern approaches to microstructure data processing, including wavelet denoising, are discussed. The wavelet procedure is applied to small-scale shear signals before estimating the dissipation rate ε and to the temperature/density profiles used to calculate Thorpe scales. Microstructure data obtained on the Mediterranean shelf of Catalonia are used to illustrate various approaches to the Thorpe displacement calculations. It is suggested that the Weibull probability function is an appropriate model for the Thorpe scale distribution. Microstructure measurements from the upper layer of the Boadella reservoir (Catalonia, Spain) support this finding.A new analytical approximation for the 1D Panchev–Kesich spectrum is deduced and the results of ε computation are compared with spectral fitting by the widely used Nasmyth spectrum. Applying the Kraichnan spectral model to compute ε from temperature spectra in the convective-viscous sub-range is examined as an alternative to the Batchelor spectrum. Microstructure measurements taken in Lake Banyoles (Catalonia, Spain) and in the North Atlantic were used for spectral calculations.Statistical analysis of eddy Kb and thermal Kθ diffusivities measured on a shallow shelf of the Black Sea shows the importance of process-orientated domain averaging of the diffusivities in obtaining good correspondence between Kb and Kθ in active turbulent regions. In weakly turbulent, stratified interior layers, the averaged Kb and Kθ differ significantly, which may point to the inapplicability of isotropic formulae used for ε and temperature dissipation χθ estimates, as well as to a dependence of the mixing efficiency γ on the Richardson number or in some cases on regions of fossil turbulence.  相似文献

Displaying “calculated minus observed” data for precise titrations of seawater with strong acid permits direct evaluation of important parameters and detection of systematic errors. At least two data sets from the GEOSECS (Geochemical Ocean Sections) program fit an equilibrium model (which includes carbonate, borate, sulfate, silicate, fluoride, and phosphate) within the most stringent experimental error, less than 2 μmol kg−1. The effect of various parameters on the fit of calculated to observed values depends strongly on pH. Although standard potential E0, total alkalinity At, total carbonate Ct, and first acidity constant of carbon dioxide pK1 are nearly independent, and can be determined for each data set, other parameters are strongly correlated. Within such groups, all but one parameter must be determined from data other than the titration curve.Adding an acid-base pair to the theoretical model (e.g. Cx=20 μmol kg−1, pKx=6.2) produces a deviation approaching 20 μmol kg−1 at constant Ct; however, adjustment of Ct by about −18 μmol kg−1 to produce a good fit leaves only ± 1.5 μmol kg−1 residual deviation from the reference values. Thus, at current standards of precision, an unidentified weak acid cannot be distinguished from carbonate purely on the basis of the titration curve shape. There are few full sets of numerical data published, and most show larger systematic errors (3–12 μmol l−1) than the above; one well-defined source is experiments performed in unsealed vessels. Total carbonate can be explicitly obtained as a function of pH by a rearrangement of the titration curve equation; this can reveal a systematic decrease in Ct in the pH range 5–6, as a result of CO2 gas loss from the titration vessel. Attempts to compensate for this by adjustment of At, Ct, or pK1 produce deviations which mimic those produced by an additional acid-base pair.Changing from the free H+ scale (for which [HSO4] and [HF] are explicit terms in the alkalinity) to the seawater scale (SWS) (where those terms are part of a constant factor multiplying [H+]) requires modification of the titration curve equation as well as adjustment of acidity constants. Even with this change, however, omission of pH-dependent terms in [HSO4] and [HF] produces small systematic errors at low pH.Shifts in liquid junction potential also introduce small systematic errors, but are significant only at pH <3. High-pH errors due to response of the glass electrode to Na+ as well as H+ can be adequately compensated to pH 9.5 by a linear selectivity expression.  相似文献

Modeling the vertical penetration of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) through the ocean, and its utilization by phytoplankton, is fundamental to simulating marine primary production. The variation of attenuation and absorption of light with wavelength suggests that photosynthesis should be modeled at high spectral resolution, but this is computationally expensive. To model primary production in global 3d models, a balance between computer time and accuracy is necessary. We investigate the effects of varying the spectral resolution of the underwater light field and the photosynthetic efficiency of phytoplankton (α*), on primary production using a 1d coupled ecosystem ocean turbulence model. The model is applied at three sites in the Atlantic Ocean (CIS (60°N), PAP (50°N) and ESTOC (30°N)) to include the effect of different meteorological forcing and parameter sets. We also investigate three different methods for modeling α* – as a fixed constant, varying with both wavelength and chlorophyll concentration [Bricaud, A., Morel, A., Babin, M., Allali, K., Claustre, H., 1998. Variations of light absorption by suspended particles with chlorophyll a concentration in oceanic (case 1) waters. Analysis and implications for bio-optical models. J. Geophys. Res. 103, 31033–31044], and using a non-spectral parameterization [Anderson, T.R., 1993. A spectrally averaged model of light penetration and photosynthesis. Limnol. Oceanogr. 38, 1403–1419]. After selecting the appropriate ecosystem parameters for each of the three sites we vary the spectral resolution of light and α* from 1 to 61 wavebands and study the results in conjunction with the three different α*estimation methods. The results show modeled estimates of ocean primary productivity are highly sensitive to the degree of spectral resolution and α*. For accurate simulations of primary production and chlorophyll distribution we recommend a spectral resolution of at least six wavebands if α* is a function of wavelength and chlorophyll, and three wavebands if α* is a fixed value.  相似文献

The annual subduction rate of the North Pacific was calculated based on isopycnally averaged hydrographic climatology (HydroBase), high-resolution winter mixed-layer climatology (NWMLC), and various wind stress climatologies from ship reports, numerical weather prediction products, and satellite products. The calculation was performed using Lagrangian coordinates in the same manner as in previous works, except a less smoothed oceanic climatology (HydroBase and NWMLC) was used instead of a World Ocean Atlas. Differences in the wind stress climatologies have very little effect on subduction rate estimates. The subduction rate census for density classes showed peaks corresponding to subtropical mode water (STMW), central mode water (CMW), and eastern subtropical mode water (ESTMW). The deeper mixed layer and the associated sharper mixed-layer fronts in the present climatology resulted in a larger lateral induction, which boosted the subduction rate, especially for the potential density anomaly (σθ) range of the lighter STMW (25.0 < σθ < 25.2 kg m−3) and lighter CMW (26.0 < σθ < 26.2 kg m−3), compared to previous estimates. The renewal time of permanent pycnocline water was estimated as the volume of water divided by the subduction rate for each σθ class: 2–4 years for ESTMW (24.5 < σθ < 25.2 kg m−3), 2 years for the lighter STMW (25.0 < σθ < 25.3 kg m−3), 5–9 years for the denser STMW (25.3 < σθ < 25.6 kg m−3), 10–20 years for the lighter CMW (26.0 < σθ < 26.2 kg m−3), 20–30 years for the middle CMW (26.2 < σθ < 26.3 kg m−3), and 60 years or longer for the denser CMW (26.3 < σθ < 26.6 kg m−3). A comparison of the water volume and subduction rate in potential temperature–salinity (θS) space indicated that the upper permanent pycnocline water (25.0 < σθ < 26.2 kg m−3) was directly maintained by nondiffusive subduction of winter surface water, including STMW and lighter CMW. The lower permanent pycnocline water (26.2 < σθ < 26.6 kg m−3) may be maintained through the subduction of fresher and colder water from the subarctic–subtropical transition region and subsequent mixing with saltier and warmer water. Diagnosis of the potential vorticity (PV) of the subducted water demonstrated that the low PV of STMW was mainly due to the large subduction rate, whereas that of both ESTMW and CMW was due mainly to the small density advection rate (cross-isopycnal flow). Additionally, a relatively large subduction rate probably contributes to the low PV of part of the lighter CMW (ESTMW) formed in the region around 38°N and 170°W (28°N and 145°W), which is characterized by a relatively thick winter mixed layer and an associated mixed-layer front, causing a large lateral induction rate.  相似文献

The salinity minimum frequently occurring in the Mixed Water Region between the Oyashio and Kuroshio Fronts seems to originate from the salinity minimum at the density of 26.8σθ called the North Pacific Intermediate Water. We examined water exchange of this region with the Oyashio and the Kuroshio Extension using mixing ratio RK defined as (θ - θOY)/(θK - θOY) × 100, where θOY, θK, and θ represent potential temperature of the Oyashio and Kuroshio Waters and their mixture on the isopycnal surfaces, respectively. CTD data were obtained by repeated observation from January 1990 to May 1991. RK increases southward from the Oyashio Front to the Kuroshio Front with the range of −20 to 120%. The gradient of RK on the isopycnal surfaces is large around the Oyashio Front above the 26.8σθ surface, while it is large around the Kuroshio Front below it. This agrees with the average RK in the Mixed Water Region decreasing greatly with the increase of density at densities less dense than 26.8σθ. We calculated thickness and volume transport of the Oyashio between the isopycnal surfaces near the coast of Hokkaido. They increase largely with density at densities less dense than 26.8σθ. It is supposed that the salinity minimum in the Mixed Water Region is the upper limit of the water largely influenced by the Oyashio Water. Its density could depend only on the density structure of the Oyashio.  相似文献

A model is presented for flux evaluation of trace metals in situ. For the practically feasible simplified model, mere estimation of metals in various dissolved states (e.g. Cr(III) and Cr(VI)) and in particulate phase, in a single vertical profile at least, together with temperature, salinity, O2, titration alkalinity (TA), Ca2+, NO3, HPO42− and H4SiO4 parameters enable evaluation of the amount of metal removed in situ, to a first approximation. From the evaluated net metal removed (MR), estimation could be made for removal constants, i.e. removal times (t), residence times (τ) and removal rate constants (ψ), not only for the average ocean but also for the oxygen-minimum zone. Besides, MR can be used to calculate t, τ and ψ of various species of the metal concerned, that are not yet available. The present model evaluates t, τ and ψ for total chromium from a single station, which are consistent with the reported values, and shows that chromium is removed with fast-settling particulate matter. This study also reveals that t, τ and ψ values of 0.001 years 7 years and 0.150 y−1, respectively, for Cr(III) in the oxygen-minimum zone and 0.006 y, 211 y and 0.005 y−1 in the marine environment, respectively.  相似文献

This paper proposes the following generalized representation for a wind-wave frequency spectrum:
where E = ∫S(f)df is the variance of the surface displacement; fm is the frequency of the spectral peak; and Ci's, i = 1,2,3, are dimensionless parameters that can be determined from the internal spectral parameters of a given spectrum. When applied to 234 sets of wave spectra recorded in the Great Lakes, this representation has been realistic, accurate, and capable of representing widely varied wave processes. The Ci's are clearly related to wave growth processes; they are large during early growth, decrease as waves grow, and reach approximate equilibrium when waves are fully developed.  相似文献

Western boundary currents flow poleward from low latitudes until they ultimately separate from the coast and turn eastward into the ocean interior. The separation is mainly due to either: (i) the variation of the Coriolis parameter with latitude (β) which causes vanishing of the near-wall depth; (ii) vanishing wind stress curl over the ocean interior which forces zero meridional transport; or (iii) opposing currents that flow toward the equator and force the northward flowing currents to turn offshore (Agra and Nof, Deep Sea Research I, 40, 2259–2282). Here, we focus on the third kind of separated currents and show that, due to β, such separated currents migrate along the wall. A nonlinear “reduced gravity” one-and-a-half layer model is used to compute the desired migration speed. Solutions of the primitive equations are constructed analytically assuming that the translation rate is steady. It is found that the migration rate along the wall is given by βRd2 cosα/2 sinγ, where Rd is the Rossby radius, α an angle that measures the inclination of the joint offshore currents relative to the north, and γ is the angle between the axis of the joint offshore currents and the wall. The migration meridional component can be either northward or southward (depending on the inclination of the wall) but the zonal component is always westward. When the separated joint offshore flow is in the east-west direction (i.e. α = π/2 or 3π/2 so that the separated flow is zonal) no migration is taking place. It turns out that the above migration formula is so robust that it is also describes the migration rate in a two-and-a-half layer model where one current is allowed to, at least partially, dive under the other. For most separated currents the computed migration rate is a few centimeters per second.Possible application of this theory to the Confluence zone in the South Atlantic (where significant seasonal movement of the separation latitude has been observed) is discussed.  相似文献

The interactions of Fe(II) and Fe(III) with the inorganic anions of natural waters have been examined using the specific interaction and ion pairing models. The specific interaction model as formulated by Pitzer is used to examine the interactions of the major components (Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, K+, Sr2+, Cl, SO4, HCO3, Br, CO32−, B(OH)4, B(OH)3 and CO2) of seawater and the ion pairing model is used to account for the strong interaction of Fe(II) and Fe(III) with major and minor ligands (Cl, SO42−, OH, HCO3, CO32− and HS) in the waters. The model can be used to estimate the activity and speciation of iron in natural waters as a function of composition (major sea salts) and ionic strength (0 to 3 M). The measured stability constants (KFeX*) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) have been used to estimate the thermodynamic constants (KFeX) and the activity coefficient of iron complexes (γFeX) with a number of inorganic ligands in NaClO4 medium at various ionic strengths: In(KFeXFeγX) = InKFeX − In(γFeX) The activity coefficients for free ions (γFe, γx) needed for this extrapolation have been estimated from the Pitzer equations. The activity coefficients of the ion pairs have been used to determine Pitzer parameters (BFeX, BFeX0, CFeXφ) for the iron complexes. These results make it possible to estimate the stability constants for the formation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) complexes over a wide range of ionic strengths and in different media. The model has been used to determine the solubility of Fe(III) in seawater as a function of pH. The results are in good agreement with the measurements of Byrne and Kester and Kuma et al. When the formation of Fe organic complexes is considered, the solubility of Fe(III) in seawater is increased by about 25%.  相似文献

The eddy viscosities for the steady and the periodic components of combined wave-current flows have been studied quantitatively from the presently available experimental data. It has been found that inside the boundary interaction layer [z < δ] the eddy viscosity εc for the steady flow is increased in the presence of waves while outside the boundary interaction layer [z >δ] it is affected little by the wave motion, and that the eddy viscosity εw for the wave motion in the boundary layer is independent of the current strength U*. On the other hand, a new eddy viscosity model is presented to give a good prediction of the velocity distributions of the waves and currents in comparison with experimental data.  相似文献

A sediment core covering the last 145 kyrs was collected in the western subarctic Pacific (WSAP), and analyzed for Ba, U, Al, Sc, La, Yb, Th, biogenic opal (Opal) and organic carbon (Corg) as well as its isotopic ratio (δ13C). This study examined the change of past biological production in WSAP with multiple proxies, together with understanding the relation between Loess from the Asian continent and the biological production. The Loess content was estimated from the metal components, Al, Sc, La, Yb and Th. In this high latitude core (50°N), the Loess content was generally high during the glacial periods, but it was also high even in some interglacial periods. The excess amount of Ba relative to the detrital material composition, Baex, showed the best correlation with the Vostok δD (r = 0.72, p < 0.001), indicating that the biological production was lower in the glacial periods than in the interglacials. This corroborates the pervasive correlation between Baex in the polar region, WSAP and the Antarctic Sea, and Antarctic temperature, combined with previous research. This correlation might be explained by the stratification caused by cooling. In addition, the time variations of Baex in WSAP were similar to those of Baex in the Okhotsk Sea and of other proxies (Corg and Opal) in both the Okhotsk and the Bering Sea, indicating the spatial homogeneity of Baex in WSAP including proximal marginal seas. The Opal content was more weakly correlated with the Vostok δD (r = 0.46, p < 0.001) than Baex, reflecting that Opal in WSAP including proximal marginal seas was spatially heterogeneous compared to Baex. While both the Corg content and Uex, the excess amount of U relative to the detritus composition, were not positively correlated with the Vostok δD, they behaved similarly in the sediments. The positive correlation between δ13C and the Vostok δD (r = 0.42, p < 0.001), between δ13C and Baex (r = 0.60, p < 0.001) and between δ13C and Opal (r = 0.36, p < 0.01) indicates that δ13C in WSAP may give some information on the phytoplankton growth rate. There was not a significant correlation between the spatially homogeneous Baex in WSAP and Loess (r = − 0.16, p > 0.01), suggesting that the increase of biological production with the increase of Loess supply during the glacial periods did not occur.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of particulate organic matter (POM) were studied approximately weekly during spring and summer 2003 and 2004 in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) in order to track the temporal variations and differences between two years. In parallel, particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate nitrogen (PN), phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a), and N and P nutrients were monitored. All studied parameters, especially N and P nutrients and chlorophyll a, showed higher concentrations and larger variability in spring 2004. As a consequence the macroaggregates were produced in late spring 2004. The C and N isotope composition of POM was not directly linked to phytoplankton biomass dynamics. The δ13CPOC values covaried with temperature. In 2004, δ13CPOC variations followed the δ15NPN values as well as the δ13CDIC values which were probably more dependent on the photosynthetic use of 12C. Variations in δ15NPOM values were most probably the consequence of variations in N nutrient sources used in phytoplankton assimilation. The significant correlation between δ15NPN values and nitrate concentrations in 2004 implies intense nitrate assimilation in the presence of higher nitrate concentration. This suggests nitrate as the key nutrient in the »new primary production«, later producing macroaggregates with a mean δ13C and δ15N values of − 19‰ and 5‰, respectively. A low fractionation factor ε, < 1‰, lower than that reported in other marine and lacustrine systems, was found probably to be a consequence of distinct phytoplankton species, i.e. several classes of autotrophic nanoflagellates, and specific growth conditions present in the Gulf of Trieste. The tentative use of C isotope composition of POM revealed a higher contribution of allochthonous organic matter in 2004 compared to 2003 due to higher riverine inflow.  相似文献

The stable carbon isotopic composition of particulate organic matter in the ocean, δ13CPOC, shows characteristic spatial variations with high values in low latitudes and low values in high latitudes. The lowest δ13CPOC values (−32‰ to −35‰) have been reported in the Southern Ocean, whereas in arctic and subarctic regions δ13CPOC values do not drop below −27‰. This interhemispheric asymmetry is still unexplained. Global gradients in δ13CPOC are much greater than in δ13CDIC, suggesting that variations in isotopic fractionation during organic matter production are primarily responsible for the observed range in δ13CPOC. Understanding the factors that control isotope variability is a prerequisite when applying δ13CPOC to the study of marine carbon biogeochemistry. The present model study attempts to reproduce the δ13CPOC distribution pattern in the ocean. The three-dimensional (3D) Hamburg Model of the Oceanic Carbon Cycle version 3.1 (HAMOCC3.1) was combined with two different parametrizations of the biological fractionation of stable carbon isotopes. In the first parametrization, it is assumed that the isotopic fractionation between CO2 in seawater and the organic material produced by algae, P, is a function of the ambient CO2 concentration. The two parameters of this function are derived from observations and are not based on an assumption of any specific mechanism. Thus, this parametrization is purely empirical. The second parametrization is based on fractionation models for microalgae. It is supported by several laboratory experiments. Here the fractionation, P, depends on the CO2 concentration in seawater and on the (instantaneous) growth rates, μi, of the phytoplankton. In the Atlantic Ocean, where most field data are available, both parametrizations reproduce the latitudinal variability of the mean δ13CPOC distribution. The interhemispheric asymmetry of δ13CPOC can mostly be attributed to the interhemispheric asymmetry of CO2 concentration in the water. However, the strong seasonal variations of δ13CPOC as reported by several authors, can only be explained by a growth rate-dependent fractionation, which reflects variations in the cellular carbon demand.  相似文献

An accurate numerical prediction of the oceanic upper layer velocity is a demanding requirement for many applications at sea and is a function of several near-surface processes that need to be incorporated in a numerical model. Among them, we assess the effects of vertical resolution, different vertical mixing parameterization (the so-called Generic Length Scale –GLS– set of kε, kω, gen, and the Mellor–Yamada), and surface roughness values on turbulent kinetic energy (k) injection from breaking waves.First, we modified the GLS turbulence closure formulation in the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) to incorporate the surface flux of turbulent kinetic energy due to wave breaking. Then, we applied the model to idealized test cases, exploring the sensitivity to the above mentioned factors. Last, the model was applied to a realistic situation in the Adriatic Sea driven by numerical meteorological forcings and river discharges. In this case, numerical drifters were released during an intense episode of Bora winds that occurred in mid-February 2003, and their trajectories compared to the displacement of satellite-tracked drifters deployed during the ADRIA02-03 sea-truth campaign. Results indicted that the inclusion of the wave breaking process helps improve the accuracy of the numerical simulations, subject to an increase in the typical value of the surface roughness z0. Specifically, the best performance was obtained using αCH = 56,000 in the Charnok formula, the wave breaking parameterization activated, kε as the turbulence closure model. With these options, the relative error with respect to the average distance of the drifter was about 25% (5.5 km/day). The most sensitive factors in the model were found to be the value of αCH enhanced with respect to a standard value, followed by the adoption of wave breaking parameterization and the particular turbulence closure model selected.  相似文献

The original prognostic equations for the JONSWAP-spectrum contained inconsistencies. A subsequent paper (Hasselmann et al., 1976, J. phys. Oceanogr.6, 200–208) attempted to regularise the situation. This paper shows that there were still inconsistencies in the prognostic equations giving overestimations of the first moment of the spectrum and consequently the significant wave height. The prognostic equations are reworked systematically and results presented. It is shown that variable σa, σb and γ must be used to achieve consistent results  相似文献

This study examined the relationship between carbon isotopic composition of sinking organic matter (OM) and the biological, physical and chemical properties of the surface ocean in the Cariaco Basin. The 13C/12C ratio of OM (δ13Corg) in sinking particles was determined on sediment trap samples from four depths collected from 1996 to 1999 as part of the CArbon Retention In A Colored Ocean time series. Water column properties, including temperature, productivity, chlorophyll and concentration of dissolved CO2, were concurrently measured on monthly cruises. The δ13Corg varied from a high of –17.7‰ to a low of –22.6‰ during the study period. The variation of the δ13Corg throughout seasonal cycles was directly proportional to the strength of upwelling and was negatively correlated with temperature (r2=0.64). During the 1996–1997 upwelling event, the strongest during the study period, the δ13Corg increased by 4.4‰ whereas during the 1998–1999 upwelling event, the weakest during the study period, the δ13Corg only increased by 3.3‰. Contrary to most previous studies, we observed a negative relationship (r2=0.53) between [CO2 aq] and the estimated isotopic fractionation factor (εp). However, there was no correlation between εp and the calculated growth rates indicating that there was non-diffusive uptake of carbon into phytoplankton cells. It thus appears that [CO2 aq] does not control the δ13Corg in the water column of the study site. The best explanation for the isotopic enrichment observed is a carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM) in phytoplankton. The existence of a CCM in phytoplankton has major implications for the interpretation of the δ13Corg in the Cariaco Basin.  相似文献
