The measurement of stellar properties such as chemical compositions, masses and ages, through stellar spectra, is a fundamental problem in astrophysics. Progress in the understanding, calculation and measurement of atomic properties and processes relevant to the high-accuracy analysis of F-, G-, and K-type stellar spectra is reviewed, with particular emphasis on abundance analysis. This includes fundamental atomic data such as energy levels, wavelengths, and transition probabilities, as well as processes of photoionisation, collisional broadening and inelastic collisions. A recurring theme throughout the review is the interplay between theoretical atomic physics, laboratory measurements, and astrophysical modelling, all of which contribute to our understanding of atoms and atomic processes, as well as to modelling stellar spectra.  相似文献

We present a procedure to make direct diagnostics of the physical conditions of the regions of formation of the atomic spectral lines in stellar atmospheres using the atomic line widths at half maximum and the number of lines visible of a given atomic series in the observed stellar spectra. This is accomplished using the theoretical widths at half maximum of the atomic lines induced by the broadening produced by thermal energy fluctuations and considering the maximum number of levels that exist in those atoms under the physical conditions of the given system. The procedure is easy to use in any application. As an example we apply the procedure to the observed Lyman lines of hydrogen in the ultraviolet of some stars.  相似文献

The different methods for the study of stellar winds are discussed: (1) P Cygni profiles (2) atomic emission lines (3) infrared and radio free-free emission (4) molecular emission lines (5) infrared radiation by dust. For each of these methods we describe some characteristic observations and we discuss the way in which these data can be used to derive the mass loss rate and the velocity distribution of the wind. We discuss these from the basic physical point of view in order to obtain an understanding of the basic physical processes involved. Post-Newtonian equations are solved numerically for stellar models with a polytropic pressure-density relation for the case of uniform rotation, no meridional currents, and axial symmetry. The solution is obtained by following Stoeckly's numerical technique. Parameters characterizing the critical configuration are determined and compared with the values obtained recently by Fahlman and Anand, who followed Chandrasekhar's series expansion method.  相似文献

The unified sight of solar and stellar activity has revealed a worthwhile concept under several aspects, gaming in the last decade the increasing favour of observers and theorists, and the term solar-stellar connection has recently been introduced to point out the complementarity of solar and stellar observations in the background of the basic role played by the magnetic field.The great development of stellar activity observations suggests a much wider scenario than it were possible to imagine even a few years ago and stimulates theoretical work, most of which is in the framework of the - dynamo theory.Although dynamo theory seems to be plausible and successful in capturing the fundamental mechanism of solar and stellar activity, several uncertainties and intrinsic limits do still exist and are discussed together with alternative or complementary suggestions.Further, it is stressed the relevance of nonlinear problems in dynamo theory — as magnetoconvection, growth and stability of flux tubes against magnetic buoyancy, hydromagnetic global dynamos — to improve our understanding of both small and large scale interaction of rotation, turbulent convection and magnetic field, and of the transition from linear to nonlinear regime. Finally, recent dynamo models of stellar activity are critically reviewed, as to the dependence of activity indexes and cycles on rotation rate and spectral type.Open problems to be solved by future work are outlined, pointing out the role of ever increasing stellar data in widening out our comprehension of the dynamo operation modes, which seem to depend on stellar structure, rotation and age.  相似文献

We present high-quality long-slit spectra for three nearby powerful radio galaxies – 3C 293, 3C 305 and PKS 1345+12. These were taken with the aim of characterizing the young stellar populations (YSP), and thereby investigating the evolution of the host galaxies, as well as the events that triggered the activity. Isochrone spectral synthesis modelling of the wide wavelength coverage spectra of nuclear and off-nuclear continuum-emitting regions have been used to estimate the ages, masses and luminosities of the YSP component, taking full account of reddening effects and potential contamination by activity-related components. We find that the YSP make a substantial contribution to the continuum flux in the off-nuclear regions on a radial scale of 1–20 kpc in all three objects. Moreover, in two objects we find evidence for reddened post-starburst stellar populations in the near-nuclear regions of the host galaxies. The YSP are relatively old (0.1–2 Gyr), massive  (109 < M YSP < 2 × 1010 M)  and make up a large proportion (∼1–50 per cent) of the total stellar mass in the regions of the galaxies sampled by the observations. Overall, these results are consistent with the idea that the nuclear activity of active galactic nuclei in some radio galaxies is triggered by major gas-rich mergers. Therefore, these radio galaxies form part of the subset of early-type galaxies that is evolving most rapidly in the local Universe. Intriguingly, the results also suggest that the radio jets are triggered relatively late in the merger sequence, and that there is an evolutionary link between radio galaxies and luminous/ultraluminous infrared galaxies.  相似文献

A computer controlled measuring procedure is presented ascertaining intensity courses. The procedure is capable for measurement and storage of the transmittance of photographic spectrograms and for the determination of residual intensities derived from a mean local continum. Residual intensity courses obtained from several spectrograms can be superimposed and correlated with wavelength scale. The method was applied to eight weakly or not reddened early type stars in order to obtain data on atomic lines in the central part of the diffuse interstellar line at 4430 Å. The results show the general influence of the stellar portion on the central depth and equivalent width of the whole diffuse feature.  相似文献

With the rapid development of large scale sky surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), GAIA and LAMOST (Guoshoujing telescope), stellar spectra can be obtained on an ever-increasing scale. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate stel- lar atmospheric parameters such as Teff, log g and [Fe/H] automatically to achieve the scientific goals and make full use of the potential value of these observations. Feature selection plays a key role in the automatic measurement of atmospheric parameters. We propose to use the least absolute shrinkage selection operator (Lasso) algorithm to select features from stellar spectra. Feature selection can reduce redundancy in spectra, alleviate the influence of noise, improve calculation speed and enhance the robustness of the estimation system. Based on the extracted features, stellar atmospheric param- eters are estimated by the support vector regression model. Three typical schemes are evaluated on spectral data from both the ELODIE library and SDSS. Experimental results show the potential performance to a certain degree. In addition, results show that our method is stable when applied to different spectra.  相似文献

The cosmological evolution of a population of quasars and AGNs is considered. The applied source model provides that the star collisions in the central stellar system should be the principal mechanism of supply of the gas falling on to the black hole. The continuity equation for the assumed population is solved for the zero birth function as well as for its special type. The solutions obtained depend on the distribution of two parameters characterizing a single source: the radius of stellar core and the number of stars in the system. All these solutions allow to describe practically whole evolutionary track of the considered source population, and to relate the evolution to some features of a single source.  相似文献

The basic characteristics of stellar complexes and superassociations, as well as the differences between these kinds of gigantic groups of young stars, are discussed. The main difference is that superassociations are the result of induced (triggered) star formation, while the stars and clusters in stellar complexes develop as a result of the spontaneous processes typical of galactic gaseous disks.  相似文献

We study the problem of the reconstruction of a non-stationary space symmetrical regular planar potential of the gravitating system on a family of evolving types of orbits being used in the dynamics of stationary stellar systems. An application of such an inverse problem to the dynamical evolution of stellar systems with variable masses is given. The general form of the evolving orbit which we use when writing out the differential equations for non-stationary potential may also be interpreted as an osculating orbit of the perturbed Keplerian motion. In this case we are making an additional transformation of the basic equation of the problem and demonstrating an appropriate example of the construction of a non-stationary potential of a gravitating system. In connection with the stellar dynamical character of our inverse problem, we also give a generalized form of its basic equation in a rotating coordinate system.  相似文献

We investigate the dynamical effects of a molecular cloud complex with a mass ∼ 107 M and a size ∼ a few 100 pc on the vertical distribution of stars and atomic hydrogen gas in a spiral galactic disc. Such massive complexes have now been observed in a number of spiral galaxies. The extended mass distribution in a complex, with an average mass density 6 times higher than the Oort limit, is shown to dominate the local gravitational field. This results in a significant redistribution or clustering of the surrounding disc components towards the mid-plane, with a resulting decrease in their vertical scaleheights.
The modified, self-consistent stellar density distribution is obtained by solving the combined Poisson equation and the force equation along the z -direction for an isothermal stellar disc on which the complex is imposed. The effect of the complex is strongest at its centre, where the stellar mid-plane density increases by a factor of 2.6 and the vertical scaleheight decreases by a factor of 3.4 compared with the undisturbed stellar disc. A surprising result is the large radial distance of ∼ 500 pc from the complex centre over which the complex influences the disc; this is due to the extended mass distribution in a complex. The complex has a comparable effect on the vertical distribution of the atomic hydrogen gas in the galactic disc. This 'pinching' or constraining effect should be detectable in the nearby spiral galaxies, as for example has been done for NGC 2403 by Sicking. Thus the gravitational field of a complex results in local corrugations of the stellar and H  i vertical scaleheights, and the galactic disc potential is highly non-uniform on scales of the intercomplex separation of ∼ 1 kpc.  相似文献

Stellar and atomic systems obey analogous angular momentum/mass relationships and analogous angular momentum/magnetic dipole moment relationships. The dimensional constants in both pairs of angular momentum laws appear to be related by a simple set of self-similar scaling equations, suggesting that atomic and stellar systems may be self-similar.  相似文献

The basic properties of acoustic wave propagation in stellar interiors can be analysed from the autocorrelation function (ACF) of intensity (or velocity) observations without measuring the resonant p-mode frequencies. We show how the strength of acoustic wave refraction in the stellar core, or forward acoustic amplitude, can be measured from a modulation in the ACF. This is the basic physical quantity which governs the so-called 'small frequency separations', and its measurement from the ACF can be used for determining the small frequency separations when the data is of insufficient quality for a reliable identification of the stellar p-mode frequencies.  相似文献

Ultraviolet spectra of population I WR stars obtained from IUE archive are used to determine fundamental stellar parameters. Terminal velocities for 85 galactic and LMC Wolf-Rayet stars were obtained by means of the empirical relation between spectral quantities easily measured in low resolution and high-resolution terminal velocity measurements. Temperatures and so-called transformed radii were derived based on available contour plots of spectral characteristics for a grid of NLTE models. The effect of the reddening law on stellar far ultraviolet continua is emphasized and the revised extinction curve towards WR stars is used for dereddening. For the sample of stars attributed to open clusters or associations we construct the stellar distance scale and adopt it for the other WR stars. The remaining fundamental parameters are derived and HR diagram for population I WR stars is presented.  相似文献

Dynamical modeling of stellar disks without bulges is used to derive the dependence of the central stellar radial-velocity dispersion on the dark-halo mass. A sample of late-type galaxies with known central stellar velocity dispersions and maximum gas rotation velocities was drawn from the LEDA database. The sample-averaged ratio of the halo mass within four radial disk scale lengths to the disk mass is 80%. Objects whose halo mass can be a factor of 2 or more larger than the disk mass were identified.  相似文献

The non‐linear dynamics of bending instability and vertical structure of a galactic stellar disc embedded into a spherical halo are studied with N‐body numerical modelling. Development of the bending instability in stellar galactic disc is considered as the main factor that increases the disc thickness. Correlation between the disc vertical scale height and the halo‐to‐disc mass ratio is predicted from the simulations. The method of assessment of the spherical‐to‐disc mass ratio for edge‐on spiral galaxies with a small bulge is considered. Modelling of eight edge‐on galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4738, NGC 5170, UGC 6080, UGC 7321, UGC 8286, UGC 9422 and UGC 9556 is performed. Parameters of stellar discs, dark haloes and bulges are estimated. The lower limit of the dark‐to‐luminous mass ratio in our galaxies is of the order of one within the limits of their stellar discs.
