We present kinematics and stellar population properties of 17 dwarf early-type galaxies in the luminosity range -14 ≥ M B ≥ -19. Our sample fills the gap between the intensively studied giant elliptical and Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The dwarf ellipticals of the present sample have constant velocity dispersion profiles within their effective radii and do not show significant rotation, hence are clearly anisotropic. The dwarf lenticulars, instead, rotate faster and are, at least partially, supported by rotation. From optical Lick absorption indices, we derive metallicities and element abundances. Combining our sample with literature data of the Local Group dwarf spheroidals and giant ellipticals, we find a surprisingly tight linear correlation between metallicity and luminosity over a wide range: -8 ≥ M B ≥ -22. The α/Fe ratios of our dwarf ellipticals are significantly lower than the ones of giant elliptical galaxies, which is in agreement with spectroscopy of individual stars in Local Group dwarf spheroidals. Our results suggest the existence of a clear kinematic and stellar population dichotomy between dwarf and giant elliptical galaxies. This result is important for theories of galaxy formation, because it implies that present-day dwarf ellipticals are not the fossiled building blocks of giant ellipticals. A multivariate classification has been performed for a large sample of dynamically hot stellar systems comprising globular clusters to giant ellipticals, in quest of the formation theory of ultra compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs). For this K means cluster analysis is carried out together with the optimum criterion (Sugar et al., 2003) with respect to three parameters, logarithm of stellar mass, logarithm of effective radius and stellar mass to light ratio. The present data set has been taken from Misgeld and Hilker (2011). We found five groups MK1–MK5. These are predominated by giant ellipticals (gEs), faint dwarf ellipticals (dEs), globular clusters (GCs), massive compact objects (UCDs and nuclei of dE,Ns) and bright dwarf ellipticals respectively. Almost all UCDs are found either in MK3 or MK4. The fraction is roughly 50%–50% between MK3 and MK4. Comparable fraction of UCDs share properties either with normal GCs or with nuclei of dE,N. This adds a quantitative constraint to the long discussed hypothesis that UCDs may be formed either as massive globular clusters or have an origin similar to nuclei of dwarf galaxies. We finally find that for our clustering test in mass-size-stellar M/L ratios, ultra faint dwarf galaxies are attributed to globular cluster group (MK3) and not to the dwarf galaxy group (MK2). This highlights that there is no clear cut morphological distinction between extended star clusters and ultra faint dwarfs. These groups are highly consistent with the groups found in a previous classification for a smaller sample and completely different set of parameters.  相似文献

We present kinematics and photometric evidence for the presence of seven candidate tidal dwarf galaxies in Stephan's Quintet. The central regions of the two most probable parent galaxies, NGC 7319 and NGC 7318B, contain little or no gas whereas the intragroup medium and, in particular, the optical tails that seem to be associated with NGC 7318B are rich in cold and ionized gas. Two tidal dwarf candidates may be located at the edge of a tidal tail, another located within a tail, and for the four others there is no obvious stellar/gaseous bridge between them and the parent galaxy. Two of the candidates are associated with H I clouds, one of which is, in addition, associated with a CO cloud. All seven regions have low continuum fluxes and high Hα luminosity densities [F(Hα) = (1-60) × 10-14 ergs s-1 cm-2]. Their magnitudes (MB = –16.1 to –12.6), sizes (∼ 3.5 h75 -1 kpc), colors (typically B – R = 0.7), and gas velocity gradients (∼ 8 –26 h75 km s-1 kpc-1) are typical for tidal dwarf galaxies. In addition, the ratios between their star formation rates determined from Hα and from the B-band luminosity are typical of other tidal dwarf galaxies. The masses of the tidal dwarf galaxies in Stephan's Quintet range from ∼ 2 × 108 to 1010 M, and the median value for their inferred mass-to-light ratios is 7 (M/L). At least two of the systems may survive possible ‘fallbacks’ or disruption by the parent galaxies and may already be, or turn into, self-gravitating dwarf galaxies, new members of the group. Formation paradigms for massive galaxies have long centered around two antipodal hypotheses – the monolithic-collapse and the accretion/merger scenarios. Empirical data on the stellar contents of galaxy halos is crucial in order to develop galaxy formation and assembly scenarios which have their root in observations, rather than in numerical simulations. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has enabled us to study directly individual stars in the nearby E/S0 galaxies Cen A, NGC 3115, NGC 5102, and NGC 404. We here present and discuss HST single-star photometry in V and I bands. Using color-magnitude diagrams and stellar luminosity functions, we gauge the galaxies' stellar contents. This can be done at more than one position in the halo, but data with deeper limiting magnitudes are desired to quantify the variation of metallicity with galactocentric radius. We here compare the color distributions of red giant stars with stellar isochrones, and we intercompare the galaxies' halo populations, noting that their total absolute V magnitudes cover the range from about –21.5 to –17.5. In the future, we plan to model the stellar metallicity distributions with the aim to constrain chemical enrichment scenarios, a step towards unravelling the evolutionary history of elliptical and lenticular galaxies. We present the results of a narrow band imaging project of dwarf and giant ellipticals in the Fornax (z = 0.01), Coma (z = 0.02), A2218 (z= 0.17) and A2125 (z = 0.24) cluster. Differing from spectral line projects, we determine the mean age and metallicity of the underlying stellar populations in galaxies by measurement of the position of the RGB and MS turnoff through continuum colors (3500 Å, 4100 Å, 4675 Å and5500 Å in rest system, i.e. modified Strømgren colors). Our sample includes 120 galaxies between M = –16 and –23 in Fornax and Coma plus over 300 galaxies in distant clusters. We find the color-magnitude relation to be linear for only the brightest galaxies with an increasing amount of scatter for low luminosity ellipticals. Bright ellipticals are found to have a metallicity between –0.5 and +0.5, but low luminosity ellipticals have values that range from –2 to solar. Our age index finds a weak correlation between luminosity and mean stellar age in ellipticals such that bright ellipticals are 2 to 3 Gyrs younger than low luminosity ellipticals.  相似文献

We have conducted UBVRI and Hα CCD photometry of five barred galaxies (NGC 2523, NGC 2950, NGC 3412, NGC 3945 and NGC 5383),along with SPH simulations, in order to understand the origin of young stellar populations in the nuclei of barred galaxies. The Hα emission, which is thought to be emitted by young stellar populations, is either absent or strongly concentrated in the nuclei of early-type galaxies (NGC 2950, NGC 3412 and NGC 3945),while they are observed in the nuclei and circumnuclear regions of intermediate-type galaxies with strong bars (NGC 2523 and NGC 5383).SPH simulations of realistic mass models for these galaxies show that some disc material can be driven into the nuclear region by a strong bar potential. This implies that the young stellar populations in the circumnuclear regions of barred galaxies can be formed out of such gas. The existence of nuclear dust lanes is an indication of an ongoing gas inflow and extremely young stellar populations in these galaxies, because nuclear dust lanes such as those in NGC 5383 are not long-lasting features according to our simulations. Gradients of absorption line indices are studied and mean stellar metallicities are estimated for 46 elliptical galaxies. The mean stellar metallicities range from 〈 [Fe/H] 〉 ≃ =0.8 to +0.2 and ellipticals with smaller central velocity dispersions tend to have lower 〈 [Fe/H] 〉 thus the mass-metallicity relation holds not only for the galaxy center but also for the whole part of the galaxy. There is an evidence that the magnesium is enhanced systematically in all ellipticals by 0.2 dex with respect to the iron. Giant elliptical galaxies show lack of metal-poor stars (the G-dwarf problem). Metal-poor globular clusters of ellipticals formed well in advance of the formation of metal-rich ones which formed simultaneously with the bulk of stars of mother galaxies under the influence of galaxy chemical enrichment. The bimodal [Fe/H] distribution of globular clusters does not necessarily mean that elliptical galaxies formed by the mergers of disc galaxies. In this paper, we review the formation scenario for field hot subdwarf stars and extreme horizontal branch stars in globular clusters and discuss how the scenario helps us to understand the UV-upturn phenomenon of elliptical galaxies. It is widely accepted that field hot subdwarf stars originate from binary evolution via the following three channels, common envelope evolution channel for hot subdwarf binaries with short orbital periods, stable Roche lobe overflow channel for hot subdwarf binaries with long orbital periods, and the double helium white dwarf merger channel for single hot subdwarfs. Such a scenario can also explain the lack of binarity of extreme horizontal branch stars in globular clusters. We have applied, in an a priori way, the scenario to the study of UV-upturn phenomenon of elliptical galaxies via an evolutionary population synthesis approach and found that the UV-upturn can be naturally explained. This has major implications for understanding the evolution of UV-upturn and elliptical galaxies in general. In particular, it implies that the UV-upturn is not a sign of age, as had been postulated previously, and should not be strongly dependent on the metallicity of the population, but exists universally from dwarf ellipticals to giant ellipticals. The above a priori UV-upturn model is supported by recent GALEX observations and has been applied to naturally explain the colours of both dwarf ellipticals and giant ellipticals without the requirement of dichotomy between their stellar population properties.  相似文献

As part of an ongoing project aimed at studying the age and metallicity gradients of the stellar populations along the bars of a sample of barred spirals of different morphological types, we present our first results on NGC 4314 (SBa). We have obtained optical and NIR colours and spectral indices along the bar and we interpret some of these results here and discuss their uncertainties on the basis of single stellar population models. In a preliminary analysis, we constrain the limits for the age and metallicity of the nucleus and two selected regions in the star formation ring of NGC 4314, characterizing both as metal rich (Z<Z solar) stellar populations, and finding a difference in the mean luminosity-weighted age of at least ∼ 3–4 Gyr. Using the method of two-dimensional spectroscopy, we have investigated the kinematics and distribution of the gas and stars at the center of the early-type spiral galaxy NGC 7177 with a mediumscale bar as well as the change in the mean age of the stellar population along the radius. A classical picture of radial gas inflow to the galactic center along the shock fronts delineated by dust concentration at the leading edges of the bar has been revealed. The gas inflow is observed down to a radius R = 1″.5−2″, where the gas flows at the inner Lindblad resonance concentrate in an azimuthally highly inhomogeneous nuclear star formation ring. The bar in NGC 7177 is shown to be thick in z coordinate—basically, it has already turned into a pseudo-bulge as a result of secular dynamical evolution. The mean stellar age inside the star formation ring, in the galactic nucleus, is old, ∼10 Gyr.Outside, at a distance R = 6″−8″ from the nucleus, the mean age of the stellar population is ∼2 Gyr. If we agree that the bar in NGC 7177 is old, then, obviously, the star formation ring has migrated radially inward in the last 1–2 Gyr, in accordance with the predictions of some dynamical models.  相似文献

Observations on the 6-m telescope in the Hα line and in the continuum are reported for 10 dwarf companions of the galaxy M31: And I, And II, And III, And V, And IX, And X, Cass dSph, Peg DSph, NGC147, NGC221, and one irregular dwarf galaxy in the background, And IV. All the observed companions of M31 have current star formation rates (SFR) on the order of or less than 10−6 M /yr. On a “star formation rate-neutral hydrogen mass” diagram for galaxies in the local volume, the dwarf spheroidal companions of Andromeda lie in the region of extremely low values for these parameters. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 3, pp. 337–350 (August 2006).  相似文献

This is a study of the population of B and Be stars in the young, relatively poor, diffuse stellar clusters NGC 6871 and NGC 6913. High resolution spectra are used to study the Hα line of eleven stars in order to detect emission. Emission profiles were found for three stars in the cluster NGC 6871; one of these is a known WR-star and the Be-star BD +35°3956 demonstrates the transition from the B to the Be phase. Spectra of seven of the B stars revealed no traces of emission in the Hα line. During the time of our observations, the Be star V1322 Cyg in the cluster NGC 6913 had a strong emission Hα line profile with substantial variability in intensity and equivalent width. Moderate resolution spectra of seven stars in the cluster NGC 6871 over wavelengths of 4420-4960 ? and ten stars in the cluster NGC 6913 over wavelengths of 4050-5100 ? are used to classify the series of B and Be stars spectrally and to estimate their T eff and log g. It was found that three of the stars are not members of the clusters NGC 6871 or NGC 6913. Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 52, No. 2, pp. 257–274 (May 2009).  相似文献

We investigate numerically the chemodynamical evolution of major disc–disc galaxy mergers in order to explore the origin of the mass-dependent chemical, photometric and spectroscopic properties observed in elliptical galaxies. We investigate especially the dependence of the fundamental properties on merger progenitor disc mass (M d). Three main results are obtained in this study:– More massive (luminous) ellipticals formed by galaxy mergers between more massive spirals have higher metallicity (Z) and thus show redder colours; the typical metallicity ranges from ∼ 1.0 solar abundance (Z∼ 0.02) for ellipticals formed by mergers with M d = 1010 M to ∼ 2.0 solar (Z∼ 0.04) for those with M d= 1012 M .– Both the Mg2 line index in the central part of ellipticals (R ≤ 0.1 R e) and the radial gradient of Mg2 (δ Mg2 / δ log R) are more likely to be larger for massive ellipticals. δ Mg2 / δ log R correlates reasonably well with the central Mg2 in ellipticals. For most of the present merger models, ellipticals show a positive radial gradient of the Hβ line index. – Both M/L B and M/L K (where M, L B, and L K are the total stellar mass of galaxy mergers, the B-band and the K-band luminosities, respectively) depend on galactic mass in such a way that more massive ellipticals have larger M/L B and smaller M/L K. Interacting galaxies like the famous Antennae (NGC 4038/4039) or Stephan's Quintet (HCG 92) show considerable star forming activity in their tidal arms. High resolution images (e.g. from HST-observations) indicate that these regions consist of up to hundreds of massive stellar clusters or tidal dwarf galaxies (TDG). In this paper we want to investigate the future fate of these clusters of massive star clusters (in this work called super-clusters). We simulate compact super-clusters in the tidal field of a host-galaxy and investigate the influence of orbital and internal parameters on the rate and timescale of the merging process. We show that it is possible that such configurations merge and build a dwarf galaxy, which could be an important mechanism of how long-lived dwarf satellite galaxies form. A detailed study of the merger object will appear in a follow-up paper. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We have performed TreeSPH simulations of galaxy formation in a standard ΛCDM cosmology, including effects of star formation, energetic stellar feedback processes and a meta-galactic UV field, and obtain a mix of disk, lenticular and elliptical galaxies. The disk galaxies are deficient in angular momentum by only about a factor of two compared to observed disk galaxies. The stellar disks have approximately exponential surface density profiles, and those of the bulges range from exponential to r 1/4, as observed. The bulge-to-disk ratios of the disk galaxies are consistent with observations and likewise are their integrated B-V colours, which have been calculated using stellar population synthesis techniques. Furthermore, we can match the observed I-band Tully-Fisher (TF) relation, provided that the mass-to-light ratio of disk galaxies is (M/L I) ≃ 0.6–0.7. The ellipticals and lenticulars have approximately r 1/4 stellar surface density profiles, are dominated by non-disklike kinematics and flattened due to non-isotropic stellar velocity distributions, again consistent with observations. We present kinematic parameters and absorption line strengths for three brightest cluster galaxies, NGC 6166, 6173 and 6086. We find that NGC 6166 has a velocity dispersion profile which rises beyond 20 arcsec from the nucleus, with a halo velocity dispersion in excess of 400 km s−1. All three galaxies show a positive and constant h 4 Hermite moment. The rising velocity dispersion profile in NGC 6166 thus indicates an increasing mass-to-light ratio. Rotation is low in all three galaxies, and NGC 6173 and 6086 show possible kinematically decoupled cores. All three galaxies have Mg2 gradients similar to those found in normal bright ellipticals, which are not steep enough to support simple dissipative collapse models, but these could be accompanied by dissipationless mergers which would tend to dilute the abundance gradients. The [Mg/Fe] ratios in NGC 6166 and 6086 are higher than that found in NGC 6173, and if NGC 6173 is typical of normal bright ellipticals, this suggests that cDs cannot form from late mergers of normal galaxies.  相似文献

With the means of panoramic spectroscopy at the SAO RAS BTA telescope, we investigated the properties of stellar populations in the central regions of five early-type galaxies—the NGC524 group members. The evolution of the central regions of galaxies looks synchronized: the average age of stars in the bulges of all the five galaxies lies in the range of 3–6Gyr.Four of the five galaxies revealed synchronized bursts of star formation in the nuclei 1–2 Gyr ago. The only galaxy, in which the ages of stellar population in the nucleus and in the bulge coincide (i.e. the nuclear burst of star formation did not take place) isNGC502, the farthest from the center of the group of all the galaxies studied.  相似文献

We report results of a detailed study of the nearby blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 1705. There are two stellar populations in NGC 1705: an underlying population around a Gyr old or older, and a young population of fairly continuous star formation for the last 250 Myr. An off-centre nucleus, which is probably a young (10 Myr old), massive (106 M ) globular cluster, is part of this young population. The H morphology and emission line kinematics are consistent with an expulsive flow triggered by the formation of the nucleus. We show that NGC 1705 is losing ionized material in this galactic wind with neutral material probably entrained in the flow. This flow may lead to total removal of the ISM. The evolutionary fate of NGC 1705 is uncertain but the most likely outcome is rapid evolution into a nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy.  相似文献

The widely varying dwarf galaxy counts in different environments provide a strong challenge to standard hierarchical clustering models. The luminosity function is not universal, but seems to be strongly dependent upon environment. In this paper we describe an automated procedure for detecting and measuring very Low Surface Brightness (LSB) features in deep CCD data. We apply this procedure to large area CCD survey fields of the Virgo cluster and find 105 dwarf LSB galaxies previously uncatalogued over an area of ∼14 sq deg. We show that there are many more faint (14≤MB≤–10) LSB galaxies than would be predicted from extrapolation of the Virgo cluster catalogue luminosity function. Over our limited range of measurement the faint end slope of the luminosity function becomesα=–1.6. Although these galaxies contribute a small fraction of the total stellar light of the cluster, they may contribute significantly to the mass in galaxies if they have large mass-to-light ratios similar to those recently measured for Local Group dwarf galaxies. By a comparison with different environments, the Virgo Cluster seems to be highly `dwarf rich' if considering the dwarf to giant ratio or it's luminosity function faint end slope. Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC images, we have performed stellar photometry for more than 0.6 million stars in the interacting galaxies NGC 5194 and NGC 5195 of the M51 system. Stars of various ages have been identified on the constructed Hertzsprung-Russell diagram: blue and red supergiants, AGB stars, and red giants. The distance to M51 has been measured from the position of the tip of the red giant branch, D = 9.9 ± 0.7 Mpc. We have determined the change in the metallicity of red supergiants along the galactic radius in NGC 5194. Despite the gravitational interaction, the distribution of stars in NGC 5194 does not differ from that in isolated galaxies. The asymmetric stellar structures of NGC5195 (the so-called “feathers”) formed through the interaction of two galaxies have been found to consist mostly of AGB stars.  相似文献
