Summary The paper is concerned with the properties of a density distribution within the Earth. A system of density parameter constraints involving Stokes' coefficients of the gravity field and the parameters describing the Earth's figure is derived. A density model, whose parameters fit these constraints, accounts for the fine structure of the gravity field and Earth's figure. Additional condition imposed on the average spherical density model are derived; they guarantee that the average spherical model is compatible with the 3-D density model.

Summary The paper presents a review of the possibilities of using meteorological satellites for investigating various atmospheric phenomena and obtaining data on the physical condition of the atmosphere required for realizing the numerical methods of weather forecast, the synoptical analysis and other purposes. To avoid repetition the review does not include the much important material in the field of satellite meteorology which had been dealt with in earlier reviews.

Summary Review has been made of the first results and perspectives of investigations in geophysics and bordering sciences (geology, geography, agrobiology, etc.) by means of manned orbital space laboratories. Relatively detailed discussion is given to the problems of the interpretation of terrain feature pictures from space. Attentively considered are the technique and results of the photometric processing of atmospheric photographs near the horizon with the purpose of studying atmospheric optical non-homogeneities (in particular, aerosol layers). Summary The ionospheric effects of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) sector boundary crossings are studied for the winters of 1963–69. They are considerably stronger for proton than for non-proton sector boundaries. There are two different types of effects. The geomagnetic type is a disturbance, observed in geomagnetic activity, the night-time ionosphere and the day-time F2 region near the geomagnetic equator. The effect in the ionosphere is interpreted in terms of the IMF sector boundary crossing related changes in geomagnetic activity. The tropospheric type is aquietening, observed in tropospheric vorticity and in the day-time mid-and low-latitude ionosphere (except the geomagnetic equator region). The mechanism of this effect remains unexplained.

Summary The magnetovariational data of 143 stations distributed over the eastern margin of the Bohemian Massif, over the Brunovistulicum and the West Carpathian sector were analysed to obtain transfer functions of the geomagnetic field. Methods of multivariate coherence analysis (spectral domain approach) and of impulse response (time domain approach) were employed. Complex induction vectors were estimated and contour maps of transfer functions were computer generated. Analysing their spatial distribution, we mapped the zones of anomalous induction and interpreted them in terms of electrical conductivity structure with its tectonic implications.

Summary A procedure of fast computation of body-wave ray synthetic seismograms in vertically inhomogeneous media is suggested. The procedure uses a special approximation of the velocitydepth distribution which guarantees continuity of the first and second derivatives of velocity and does not generate false low-velocity layers (oscillations in the velocity-depth function). The ZESY82 program package, which is based on the suggested procedure, is described. The point source with an arbitrary radiation pattern may be situated at any points of the model, the receivers are situated regularly or irregularly along any profile on the Earth's surface, containing the epicentre. Numerical examples of the synthetic record sections for a model of the Earth's crust and the uppermost mantle are given.

Summary The complex of phenomena which arise simultaneously with microseismic vibrations embraces the three spheres of the Earth. In the atmosphere there arise infrasound waves, whereas hydroacoustic and microseismic waves propagate in the water and Earth's crust. In several cases the originating of intensive microseisms is connected with the generation of great and rather great magnetic storms. Such a relation was observed between microseismic vibrations recorded by seismic station Perth (Australia) and magnetic storms recorded by the Irkutsk observatory. When the rate of amplitude and period variations reached a definite value: A/t>0.15 and T/t>0.12, the magnetic storms in Irkutsk arised definitely.Directional radiation characteristic of an area of standing sea waves of limited dimensions into water and air are determined. For radiation into water a sharply directed vertical characteristic is valid. For radiation into atmosphere by coherent sources the directional characteristic is sinusoidal: zero radiation in the normal direction to the sea surface and maximum radiation in the plane of the aquatorium.

Summary Localization errors made by approximating a given medium by a homogeneous rectangular block model and due to the approximative solution of two-point ray tracing are estimated for four different structures. The separate influence of the individual characteristics of the medium is discussed. The iterative Geiger method supplemented by a generalized inversion of the damped least-squares and Marquardt algorithm is used for localizating five hypothetical hypocentres using 9 stations. Travel times in the original structures, used as input data for localization, are calculated using a special ray tracing system.

Summary Models of the Earth's density, close to thePREM model, have been derived, they reproduce the external normal gravitational field of the Earth and its dynamic flattening, and are referred to as normal density models. The Earth's surface is approximated by an ellipsoid of the order of the flattening, or of its square. Of the group of normal models sgtisfying the solution of the inverse problem, the normal density modelHME2 is recommended. The spherically symmetric density modelPREM, which was corrected in the course of solving the inverse problem, thus creating the modifiedPREM-E2 model, was used as the a priori information.

Summary In the shortwave region the variations of the spectral properties of clouds are due only to the variations of optical characteristics of water. It results in small variations in the scattering pattern. In the longwave region scattering and absorption are of essentially diffraction character. Results of computation for a typical cloud drop are given; the accuracy of «the layer of precipitated water» method is analysed; thicknesses of cloud layers are investigated when the flux incoming into a cloud gradually deforms into the blackbody radiation flux.

Summary The dynamics of the main processes of energy accumulation and dissipation in the Earth's magnetosphere at various geomagnetic disturbance levels is examined. The results of the relevant calculations are tabulated. The relationships between the energy parameters of the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere are analyzed. Some conclusions concerning the field-aligned currents in polar caps, the Joule dissipation of energy and the energy injection into the ring current, the energy releases in the upper ionosphere, etc., are drawn.

Zusammenfassung Es wurden verschiedene Installierungsmodifikationen von Neigungsmessern auf tschechoslowakischen Gezeitenstationen experimentall untersucht. Es zeigte sich, dass weder eine hohe innere Genauigkeit, noch die Übereinstimmung von Messergebnissen als genügende Bedingung für die regionale Representativität angesehen werden kann (Tab. 1, 2). Zur geophysikalischen Deutung der Ergebnisse ist daher eine einheitliche Installierung der Neigungsmesser und eine Überprüfung der Repräsentativität der Ergebnisse unbedingt nötig.

Summary The case study presented here is related to the thermodynamic analysis of entrainment and mixing in a shallow cumuls layer. The fair weather situation on 9. 9. 1983, Voves, is characterized by a field of scattered cumuli of the same depths and by a towering isolated cumulus. The clouds were sampled. Two types of analysis were used, the Paluch analysis and saturation point analysis, both of them making use of conserved parameters and a mixing line structure. Both methods gave similar results. For the small cumuli, lateral entrainment prevailed up to the highest penetration level while in the isolated cumulus, cloud top entrainment was the dominant mixing mechanism.

INacting in dependence on the temperature and supersaturation over the ice are considered in the 1 D SSconvection cloud model with detailed microphysics including freezing. The limiting influence of the water vapour pressure upon the concentration of active INis shown resulting from the dependence of water vapour pressure on the ice particle concentration.
