Two fundamentally different sources of randomness exist on which design and inference in spatial sampling can be based: (a) variation that would occur on resampling the same spatial population with other sampling configurations generated by the same design, and (b) variation occurring on sampling other populations, hypothetically generated by the same spatial model, using the same sampling configuration. The former leads to the design-based approach, which uses classical sampling theory; the latter leads to the model-based approach and uses geostatistical theory. Failure to recognize these two sources of randomness causes misunderstanding about dependence of variables and the role of randomization in sampling, unwarranted narrowing down the choice of sampling strategies to those that are model-based, and abuse in simulation experiments. This is exemplified in Barnes' publication on the required sample size for geologic site characterization by nonparametric tolerance intervals. A basic design-based strategy like Simple Random Sampling is shown to require smaller sample sizes than the model-based strategy advocated by Barnes. In addition, Simple Random Sampling is completely robust against model errors and less complicated.  相似文献

以石羊河流域为例,运用GCAWI法、空间自相关指数以及考虑空间自相关性的多(单)中心指数模型等实现了乡镇单元向格网单元图层的转化、适宜格网大小的确定以及人口密度的空间模拟。结果表明:①石羊河流域人口密度的空间分布差异较大而又相对集中,具有"3点4线3区"的"点—线—区"状空间结构;②不同单元大小的格网图层提高了流域整体的空间自相关性,Mo-ran’s I指数表现出较大的差异性和偶然性;③石羊河流域人口密度空间分布存在明显的正空间自相关,8 000~10 000 m是表现流域人口密度空间分布特征的最优选择范围;④空间自相关性影响下的人口密度空间化多(单)中心模型大大提高传统指数模型的精度,却改变了距离衰减系数的性质和大小,多中心和单中心模型模拟系数的差异主要是由金昌人口密度中心引起的。  相似文献

Space not only reflects social inequality, it also reinforces the advantages or disadvantages associated with social class. However, the study of how neighbourhoods affect their residents has only recently entered the debate on urban poverty in Latin America. We use 2000 data from the Brazilian population census, school census, and the state of São Paulo’s educational evaluation system to analyze the relationship between school infrastructure, school academic achievement, and the neighbourhoods in which these schools are located. Our analyses indicate that state-run elementary schools located in areas of concentrated poverty have lower academic achievement in mathematics tests and Portuguese than mixed and affluent areas of the city, even though these schools are all administered by the same government body. We end with a discussion of the relationship between Brazilian education policy and its influence on spatial differences in São Paulo State.  相似文献

Four dense Scandinavian limestones were analyzed to determine their mechanical properties. The generation of dust (? 10 μm) and fines (? 90 μm) during a closed circuit vertical roller mill comminution process was correlated with the calcite crystal size distributions of each limestone. Thin sections were analyzed and by means of stereology the calcite crystal size distributions for each limestone was measured. The dust generation of limestones is governed by a surface abrasive mechanism (R2 = 0.99) and the production of fines is governed by the mechanical strength of limestones (R2 = 0.99). The overall limestone degradation mechanism is predominantly controlled by the calcite cleavage planes which reduce the power consumption during the comminution process. This study is the first step in determining the influence of limestone texture on the wear rates in heterogenous raw mixes used in closed circuit comminution equipment.  相似文献

The island of Ischia belongs to the active volcanic area of Naples. It is formed from Quaternary volcanic rocks and exhibits intense hydrothermal activity, which is manifested through numerous springs, fumaroles and sporadic geysers. The content of minor and trace elements in groundwater has been analyzed, including some elements that are considered toxic for humans. Mean concentrations of As, B, Fe, Mn, Sb, and Se in samples from 43 aquifer points exceed the WHO recommended values and the limits set by European and Italian legislation (98/83/CE and DM 471, respectively). In general, the spatial distribution of the elements follows a common pattern: it is governed by a marked structural control, which favors hydrochemical processes that liberate the elements into the water.  相似文献

Practical application of fault size scaling relationships usually involves extrapolation of a limited data set over a scale range beyond that observed or into adjacent unstudied areas. Here we investigate the validity of such extrapolations by considering the variability in the size–frequency distributions of fault populations that develop under identical tectonic conditions using a numerical model to generate conjugate, normal fault populations in cross-section. The deforming material is modelled using a strain-softening, Von Mises rheology with Gaussian heterogeneity in yield strength distributed randomly throughout the mesh. We present eight deformation experiments that differ only in the random spatial pattern of yield strengths. We observe power law size–frequency scaling, i.e. N=axc (where N is the cumulative number of faults and x is a measure of fault size) but with a range of values of c. The ensemble average value of c decreases with increasing percentage extension. However, for individual model runs the dependence of c on total strain shows significant variability that we can relate to small but important differences in fault growth and strain localisation. At any particular strain, the range of values of c is ∼10 times greater than the error estimate derived from least squares regression of the cumulative frequency data. Our results suggest therefore that large uncertainties should be associated with extrapolating fault population data from one scale or region to another even if the lithology and tectonic history are similar.  相似文献

The infaunal polychaeteNephtys incisa is a dominant constituent of soft-bottom communities in nearshore New England waters. This study quantifies its population ecology under natural conditions and following disturbance (dredge material disposal). Five stations in central Long Island Sound (SREF, 1000E, 400E, 200E and CNTR) representing a gradient of increasing exposure to disposed materials were sampled quarterly for 26 months between May 1982 and June 1984. Population abundances declined continually for 2 years (from approximately 1,500 to 200 individuals m?2) following a peak of high recruitment. At CNTR, the population was decimated following disposal, and thereafter densities remained significantly below other stations. Population size-structure shifted from juvenile domination during the period of high abundance to adult domination as numbers declined. However, numbers of adults declined at 200E and CNTR following disturbance, relative to size-structure changes at other stations. Based on analyses of size-frequency distributions and tooth-rings in the jaws of individualN. incisa, eight cohorts (age-classes) were distinguished during the study period ranging from 3 months to 5 years in age. Growth was spatially and temporally variable; the average growth rate was approximately 15–20 mm (length) a year. Individual growth in most cohorts declined at 200E following disposal. Adults were reproductively active throughout the year, with two peaks in egg production, generally in the spring and fall. There were, however, spatial variations in the spawning cycle, which could influence larval recruitment. Results indicate that ambient population ofNephtys cicasa may go through several population “phases” resulting from temporal and spatial fluctuations in recruitment, individual growth and reproductive activity.Nephtys incisa's response to disturbance may depend on which phase the population is in at the time of disturbance (internal population conditions such as age/size structure) and factors external to the population (e.g., environmental influences on settlement and recruitment and/or the nature of the disturbance). Over 14 months of study, disposal of highly polluted dredge material had a negative impact on several population characteristics ofN. incisa at or near the disposal site (0 to 200 m away), but little or no effects on populations were detected 400 m to approximately 3 km away from the disposal area.  相似文献

Wide-spread environmental contamination associated with historic mining in Europe has triggered social responses to improve related environmental legislation, the environmental assessment and management methods for the mining industry. Mining has some unique features such as natural background contamination associated with mineral deposits, industrial activities and contamination in the three-dimensional subsurface space, problem of long-term remediation after mine closure, problem of secondary contaminated areas around mine sites, land use conflicts and abandoned mines. These problems require special tools to address the complexity of the environmental problems of mining-related contamination. The objective of this paper is to show how regional mineral resources mapping has developed into the spatial contamination risk assessment of mining and how geological knowledge can be transferred to environmental assessment of mines. The paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the spatial mine inventory, hazard, impact and risk assessment and ranking methods developed by national and international efforts in Europe. It is concluded that geological knowledge on mineral resources exploration is essential and should be used for the environmental contamination assessment of mines. Also, sufficient methodological experience, knowledge and documented results are available, but harmonisation of these methods is still required for the efficient spatial environmental assessment of mine contamination.  相似文献

We examined relationships between freshwater inflow and population abundance and distribution of two size classes (15–50 mm Standard Length and 51–100 mm SL) of spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) and red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) over our 13-year study covering shallow waters of Tampa Bay and several adjacent rivers. Juveniles of seatrout were relatively abundant most years and broadly distributed primarily in the bay. Freshwater inflow was positively related to spatial distribution and abundance of smaller juveniles of seatrout, yet it was unrelated to the larger size class. Red drum juveniles were less abundant and narrowly distributed primarily within the rivers. Lower portions of the Alafia, Little Manatee, and Manatee Rivers—a combined area comprising only 2 % of the study area—contained 40–96 % of the annual population. Freshwater inflow was positively related to population distribution and abundance of larger red drum suggesting that reductions in inflow can reduce both habitat area and populations. Inflow was related to abundance but not distribution of the smaller red drum suggesting that inflow may increase habitat quality but perhaps not quantity at this earlier growth stage. Comparing spatial and population dynamics of multiple species can help prioritize them for conservation and management issues, such as freshwater inflow regulation. Reductions in inflow reduce populations and spatial distribution of at least one juvenile life stage of these two fishery species. Due to their narrow spatial distribution in the rivers, juveniles of red drum appear to be particularly vulnerable to modification of the riverine environment.  相似文献

A two-year study of a population of the northernediamondback terrapin (Malaclemys t. terrapin) was undertaken in a salt marsh in Delaware. Population size estimates based on markrelease-recapture data indicate an early season mean population size of 1655 individuals during June of 1975, declining to a mean of 378 by August. Captures per unit effort declined during this same period, supporting this trend. The decline is a result of later season dispersal. Data from 1976 indicate that this pattern may have been repeated, and that the population had experienced no significant new recruitment between years. Size class frequency data reveal a lack of juveniles in the sampled population, which could not readily be attributed to sampling techniques. The estimated size of the terrapin population from this study indicates that terrapins may be important, though frequently overlooked, components of the marsh food web.  相似文献

The systematic components of spatial variation in texture over a beach foreshore-backshore-dune complex are identified using trend surface analysis. Variability across the foreshore is a function of the vector of sediment movement and reflects both orthogonal and shore-parallel transport processes. In the dune zone, textural variability reflects local topographically controlled environments, source sediments and a temporal factor. The decreasing mean size, increased sorting and decreasing negative skewness from a low water to high water mark are correlated with changes in the linear segments of the cumulative size-frequency curve: a decrease in the coarse traction population is matched by an increase in the major saltation populations. The distinction between wave-laid and wind-laid deposits is also reflected in the segments of the cumulative curve: the latter lack the coarser component but have a distinctly fine tail. Greater spatial homogeneity of textural characteristics is present in the dune sediments but distinct trends in size frequency statistics reflect the variability in a dominant saltation population, the lack of a coarse traction population, and the presence of a fine suspension population dictated by localized transport mechanisms.  相似文献

Haloxylon ammodendron Bge (C.A. Mey.) is a dominant shrub species in the Gurbantonggut Desert and plays an important role in preventing wind erosion and combating desertification, typically by developing fertile islands in desert ecosystems; however, such islands often depend on the scales. An experiment was conducted to determine the scale dependence for the soil spatial heterogeneity of H. ammodendron in the Gurbantonggut Desert using the soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic carbon (SOC), and total nitrogen (TN). The results showed that the soil EC, SOC and TN were significantly higher at the individual scale than the population scale. Moreover, the coefficients of variation (CV %) of the soil parameters at the individual scale were greater than they were at the population scale, with all except for pH (CV = 4.35 % for individual scale and CV = 2.87 % for population scale) presenting a moderate degree of variability (10 % < CV < 100 %). A geostatistical analysis revealed a strong spatial dependence [C 0 /(C 0 + C) < 25 %] within the distance of ranges for the tested parameters at both scales. The kriging interpolation results presented significant accumulation of soil SOC and TN around the shrub center and formed a significant “fertile island” at the individual scale, whereas the soil EC was much lower at the shrub center. At the population scale, patch fragments of the soil chemical properties were observed; however, not all individuals presented significant fertile islands or salt islands, and the soil EC presented a similar distribution as SOC and TN. These differences suggested that different mechanisms controlled the spatial distribution of soil minerals at the two scales and that the spatial heterogeneities are scale-dependent in a desert ecosystem.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for transforming the information of an engineering geological map into useful information for non-specialists involved in land-use planning. The method consists of classifying the engineering geological units in terms of land use capability and identifying the legal and the geologic restrictions that apply in the study area. Both informations are then superimposed over the land use and a conflict areas map is created. The analysis of these data leads to the identification of existing and forthcoming land use conflicts and enables the proposal of planning measures on a regional and local scale. The map for the regional planning was compiled at a 1:50,000 scale and encompasses the whole municipal land area where uses are mainly rural. The map for the local planning was compiled at a 1:10,000 scale and encompasses the urban area. Most of the classification and operations on maps used spatial analyst tools available in the Geographical Information System. The regional studies showed that the greater part of Analandia’s territory presents appropriate land uses. The local-scale studies indicate that the majority of the densely occupied urban areas are in suitable land. Although the situation is in general positive, municipal policies should address the identified and expected land use conflicts, so that it can be further improved.  相似文献

Conflicts arise increasingly in Tanzania which involve claims in land located in conservation areas. These conflicts arise, in many cases, between members of the local communities and the state authorities in charge of the conservation areas. They concern customary land rights both of pastoral and of agricultural communities, a topic which also touches upon their identities. The article investigates the legal dimension of these disputes by discussing the law governing conservation areas in the wider context of land tenure legislation. Within this context, the legal framework of conservation areas is discussed from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Nature conservation must respect the needs of the local population affected. It is therefore argued that concepts of community-based conservation should be developed further to work towards the goal of integrating nature conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. This paper argues that the conflicts of interest cases brought against Wall Street investment banks in the early 2000s were neither geographically nor institutionally isolated events. Rather, by combining recent work on financial knowledges in both economic geography and the social studies of finance with the growing interest in topological spatial imaginaries, I explore how London’s corporate finance industry was unable to distance itself from both the conflicts of interest allegations and the ensuing regulatory changes of the ‘Global Settlement’ in the US. Analysis of 36 semi-structured interviews conducted in London in the early 2000s is used to explore how a range of individual interests, institutional demands and structural changes within London’s financial district affected analysts’ ability to produce ‘objective’ research. As well as pointing to the problematic nature of certain aspects of knowledge rich ‘communities of practice’ [Wenger, E., 1998. Communities of practice: learning, meaning and identity. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge], I explore how the resulting contingent and situated nature of research practice is at odds with a weakly defined notion of ‘objective’ research that underpins the Financial Services Authority’s regulatory response.  相似文献

The scientific community is confident that warming of the Earth’s climate is unequivocal. Sea-level rise, which poses potential threats to coastal areas, is one of the most recognised possible impacts of this climate change. The nonlinearities, complexities, and spatial and temporal lags are common characteristics of coastal processes driven by human and natural interaction. With the acknowledgement of the complexity and dynamic nature of coastal systems, this paper introduces a spatial–temporal assessment framework, for addressing both the temporal and spatial variations, when assessing the vulnerability of natural and human systems in coastal areas. The framework is based upon a combination of system dynamics (SD) modelling and geographical information systems by taking into account spatial (x, y, z) and temporal (t) dimensions. The strategy of the adopted approach is to use the loose coupling approach by which a spatial model component is incorporated into a SD model component through a data converter.  相似文献

The study examines the relationship between poverty and forest cover degradation in rural areas of Pakistan. The area selected for the study District Upper Dir is a rural and relatively backward region located in northwestern Pakistan, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. The study area is undergoing severe deforestation and natural disasters in the recent past. The study consists of two stages, in first stage the traditional Geographical information system image was used to analyze the spatial–temporal situation of the surroundings. In the second stage, well-designed questionnaire was used to collect the primary information from 420 randomly selected households of research areas. A multidimensional poverty index has been used to measure the poverty profile of the population. It has been found that 55% households were below the poverty line. Almost, 95% households are using wood for cooking purposes. High dependence on natural resources causes forest cover degradation while burning off too much wood causes CO2 emission and leads to environmental degradation. A major portion of population is living on steeply sloped areas with certain risks. It is found that frequency of flash flood is 53% and agricultural land (54%) is at high risk and often flows with flash floods. It is concluded that there is strong correlation between multidimensional poverty and forest cover degradation which leads to climate and environmental risks.

Benthic invertebrate populations at the Surry power plant on James River, Virginia and the C. P. Crane power plant on Saltpeter Creek, Maryland exhibited large spatial and temporal variations. At C. P. Crane, where the cooling water is pumped between two tidal creeks, populations in the receiving creek exhibited five response patterns: 1) mitigation of a winter dieoff (Rangia cuneata, a brackish water clam), 2) acceleration of growth or development (R. cuneata; Scolecolepides viridis, a polychaete;Leptocheirus plumulosus, an amphipod; Tubificidae; andCoelotanypus sp., a dipteran), 3) importantion of larvae from the source water creek (S. viridis andCoelotanypus sp.), 4) extension of creek-dwelling species into the adjacent river (Coelotanypus sp. and other dipterans), and 5) increased severity of late summer population depressions (S. viridis andL. plumulosus). At Surry, where the cooling was no confined creek system at the discharge, and effects were less pronounced. The community in the Surry discharge zone resembled the community at downriver stations more closely than at upriver reference stations. TheL. plumulosus population near the Surry discharge was depressed, while theMytilopsis leucophaeta population was enhanced. No major ecological damage was attributed to either power plant, due in part to the resilience of estuarine endemic populations, but the unique features exhibited by each of the two sites support the argument that oligohaline estuarine zones should not be designateda priori for unregulated industrial development.  相似文献
