After the major 1991–1993 eruption, Mt. Etna resumed flank activity in July 2001 through a complex system of eruptive fissures
cutting the NE and the S flanks of the volcano and feeding effusive activity, fire fountains, Strombolian and minor phreatomagmatic
explosions. Throughout the eruption, magmas with different petrography and composition were erupted. The vents higher than
2,600 m a.s.l. (hereafter Upper vents, UV) erupted porphyritic, plagioclase-rich trachybasalt, typical of present-day summit
and flank activity. Differently, the vents located at 2,550 and 2,100 m a.s.l. (hereafter Lower vents, LV) produced slightly
more primitive trachybasalt dominated by large clinopyroxene, olivine and uncommon minerals for Etna such as amphibole, apatite
and orthopyroxene and containing siliceous and cognate xenoliths. Petrologic investigations carried out on samples collected
throughout the eruption provided insights into one of the most intriguing aspects of the 2001 activity, namely the coeval
occurrence of distinct magmas. We interpret this evidence as the result of a complex plumbing system. It consists in two separate
magma storage systems: a shallow one feeding the activity of the UV and a deeper and more complex storage related to the activity
of LV. In this deep storage zone, which is thermally and compositionally zoned, the favourable conditions allow the crystallization
of amphibole and the occurrence of cognate xenoliths representing wall cumulates. Throughout 2001 eruption, UV and LV magmas
remain clearly distinct and ascended following different paths, ruling out the occurrence of mixing processes between them.
Furthermore, integrating the 2001 eruption in the framework of summit activity occurring since 1995, we propose that the 2001
magma feeding the vents lower than 2,600 m a.s.l. is a precursor of a refilling event, which reached its peak during the 2002–2003
Etna flank eruption. 相似文献

The inclination (I), declination (D) and total intensity (F) of the geomagnetic field were measured on Mount Etna in 1989-1991 at a dozen sites previously sampled for archeomagnetic studies. The purpose of the work was to determine the variations of these parameters at 30 cm above ground level, and how the distortion from the main field can affect the archeomagnetic record of volcanic rocks. Ten measurements were usually performed at each site with a three-component flux-gate magnetometer, whose estimated precision is ±0.2° on direction and ±50 nT on intensity. This was considered sufficient on volcanic areas with highly magnetized rocks and where the geomagnetic gradient may be in excess of 1000 nT/m. Results averaged for each site generally show small variations in intensity (±3% of the total field) and direction (±1.5°). The averaged values of the 12 sites (I=52.6°, D=0.3°, F=44010 nT) are very close to those measured in sedimentary terrain away from the volcano (I=52.9°, D=0.35°, F=44110 nT), themselves consistent with the interpolated IGRF in eastern Sicily. The largest deviations of the geomagnetic direction have been observed on four sites, three of them located on the South flank between 1900 and 700 m elevation. It is suggested that these anomalies are mainly related to dyke swarms which are common within the South Rift Zone of Mount Etna. Our findings show that reliable archeomagnetic results can be obtained from volcanic rocks, provided that lavas of the same eruption are sampled on several sites distributed over the largest possible area. 相似文献

Mount Etna volcano was shaken during the summer 2001 by one of the most singular eruptive episodes of the last centuries.
For about 3 weeks, several eruptive fractures developed, emitting lava flows and tephra that significantly modified the landscape
of the southern flank of the volcano. This event stimulated the attention of the scientific community especially for the simultaneous
emission of petrologically distinct magmas, recognized as coming from different segments of the plumbing system. A stratigraphically
controlled sampling of tephra layers was performed at the most active vents of the eruption, in particular at the 2,100 m
(CAL) and at the 2,550 m (LAG) scoria cones. Detailed scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer
(SEM-EDS) analyses performed on glasses found in tephra and comparison with lava whole rock compositions indicate an anomalous
increase in Ti, Fe, P, and particularly of K and Cl in the upper layers of the LAG sequence. Mass balance and thermodynamic
calculations have shown that this enrichment cannot be accounted for by “classical” differentiation processes, such as crystal
fractionation and magma mixing. The analysis of petrological features of the magmas involved in the event, integrated with
the volcanological evolution, has evidenced the role played by volatiles in controlling the magmatic evolution within the
crustal portion of the plumbing system. Volatiles, constituted of H2O, CO2, and Cl-complexes, originated from a deeply seated magma body (DBM). Their upward migration occurred through a fracture network
possibly developed by the seismic swarms during the period preceding the event. In the upper portion of the plumbing system,
a shallower residing magma body (ABT) had chemical and physical conditions to receive migrating volatiles, which hence dissolved
the mobilized elements producing the observed selective enrichment. This volatile-induced differentiation involved exclusively
the lowest erupted portion of the ABT magma due to the low velocity of volatiles diffusion within a crystallizing magma body
and/or to the short time between volatiles migration and the onset of the eruption. Furthermore, the increased amount of volatiles
in this level of the chamber strongly affected the eruptive behavior. In fact, the emission of these products at the LAG vent,
towards the end of the eruption, modified the eruptive style from classical strombolian to strongly explosive. 相似文献

During the 2001 eruptive episode three different magmas were erupted on the southern flank of Mount Etna volcano from distinct vent systems. Major and minor element chemistry of rocks and minerals shows that mixing occurred, and that the mixed magma was erupted during the last eruptive phases. The space–time integrated analysis of the eruption, supported by geophysical data, together with major and trace element bulk chemistry (XRF, ICP-MS) and major and trace mineral chemistry (EPMA, LAM ICP-MS), support the following model: 1) trachybasaltic magma rises through a NNW–SSE trending structure, connected to the main open conduit system; 2) ascent of an amphibole-bearing trachybasaltic magma from a 6 km deep eccentric reservoir through newly open N–S trending fractures; 3) just a few days following the eruption onset the two tectonic systems intersect at the Laghetto area; 4) at the Laghetto vent a mixed magma is erupted.Mixing occurred between the amphibole-bearing trachybasaltic magma and an inferred deep more basic end-member. The most relevant aspect in the eruptive dynamics is that the eruption of the mixed magma at the Laghetto vent was highly explosive due to volatile content in the magma. The gas phase formed, mainly because of the decreased volatile solubility due to rapid fractures opening and increased T, related to mixing, and partially because of the amphibole breakdown. 相似文献

In this work, we report the results of an integrated approach using both seismological and geodetic data provided by the INGV-CT (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Sezione di Catania) Stromboli volcano monitoring systems, in order to improve the knowledge of its plumbing system. In particular, we investigated the relationships between the June 1999 seismic swarm, occurring in the area of Stromboli, and the possible activation of the NE–SW oriented volcano-tectonic structure. We analyzed this seismic swarm proposing new locations and a morphological analysis of the waveforms. This approach allowed us to demonstrate that there are relationships between the tectonic activity near Stromboli and the rising of magma. This evidence supports the hypothesis that during the 1999 swarm an intrusive process started from a crustal level where earthquakes were located (about 10–15 km b.s.l.). 相似文献

The 1970 Mount Etna volcanic gas analyses (Huntingdon, 1973) are among the most reduced volcanic gas samples ever reported. They contain 20–40% H2, 2–3.5% CO, and 2–5% H2S. Calculated oxygen fugacities for most of the analyses are well below quartz-fayalite-magnetite, several are more reduced than magnetite-wustite and all are many orders of magnitude less than those measured by Sato and Moore (1973) in the gas-streams of the collection sites at the time the samples were taken. The analyses show no similarity to calculated equilibrium compositions at any temperature. Deviations between analytical and equilibrium compositions indicate the gases have undergone extensive reduction involving mainly loss of oxygen. There also is limited evidence of sulfur loss. The reduced analyses are not the products of unusually reduced lavas, but originated from reactions of the erupted gases with the metal sampling device used in the collection procedure. The oxygen deficiencies of the analyses have been restored using the atomic hydrogen, carbon and sulfur data of Huntingdon and the oxygen fugacity data of Sato and Moore. The restored analyses are much more representative of the erupted gases which were remarkably rich in CO2 (15–35%) and SO2 (15–35%), and they show relatively steady compositions at each collection site over periods of observation ranging from hours to days. 相似文献

After 16 months of quiescence, Mount Etna began to erupt again in mid-July 2006. The activity was concentrated at and around
the Southeast Crater (SEC), one of the four craters on the summit of Etna, and eruptive activity continued intermittently
for 5 months. During this period, numerous vents displayed a wide range of eruptive styles at different times. Virtually all
explosive activities took place at vents at the summit of the SEC and on its flanks. Eruptive episodes, which lasted from
1 day to 2 weeks, became shorter and more violent with time. Volcanic activity at these vents was often accompanied by dramatic
mass-wasting processes such as collapse of parts of the cone, highly unusual flowage processes involving both old rocks and
fresh magmatic material, and magma–water interaction. The most dramatic events took place on 16 November, when numerous rockfalls
and pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) were generated during the opening of a large fracture on the SE flank of the SEC cone.
The largest PDCs were clearly triggered explosively, and there is evidence that much of the energy was generated during the
interaction of intruding magma with wet rocks on the cone’s flanks. The most mobile PDCs traveled up to 1 km from their source.
This previously unknown process on Etna may not be unique on this volcano and is likely to have taken place on other volcanoes.
It represents a newly recognized hazard to those who visit and work in the vicinity of the summit of Etna. 相似文献

Between 1971 and 2001, the Southeast Crater was the most productive of the four summit craters of Mount Etna, with activity that can be compared, on a global scale, to the opening phases of the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō-Kūpaianaha eruption of Kīlauea volcano, Hawai‘i. The period of highest eruptive rate was between 1996 and 2001, when near-continuous activity occurred in five phases. These were characterized by a wide range of eruptive styles and intensities from quiet, non-explosive lava emission to brief, violent lava-fountaining episodes. Much of the cone growth occurred during these fountaining episodes, totaling 105 events. Many showed complex dynamics such as different eruptive styles at multiple vents, and resulted in the growth of minor edifices on the flanks of the Southeast Crater cone. Small pyroclastic flows were produced during some of the eruptive episodes, when oblique tephra jets showered the steep flanks of the cone with hot bombs and scoriae. Fluctuations in the eruptive style and eruption rates were controlled by a complex interplay between changes in the conduit geometry (including the growth of a shallow magma reservoir under the Southeast Crater), magma supply rates, and flank instability. During this period, volume calculations were made with the aid of GIS and image analysis of video footage obtained by a monitoring telecamera. Between 1996 and 2001, the bulk volume of the cone increased by ~36×106 m3, giving a total (1971–2001) volume of ~72×106 m3. At the same time, the cone gained ~105 m in height, reaching an elevation of about 3,300 m. The total DRE volume of the 1996–2001 products was ~90×106m3. This mostly comprised lava flows (72×106 m3) erupted at the summit and onto the flanks of the cone. These values indicate that the productivity of the Southeast Crater increased fourfold during 1996–2001 with respect to the previous 25 years, coinciding with a general increase in the eruptive output rates and eruption intensity at Etna. This phase of intense summit activity has been followed, since the summer of 2001, by a period of increased structural instability of the volcano, marked by a series of important flank eruptions. 相似文献

Roccamonfina, part of the Roman Potassic Volcanic Province, is an example of a composite volcano with a complex history of caldera development. The main caldera truncates a cone constructed predominantly of this caldera may have been associated with one of the ignimbritic eruptions of the Brown Leucitic Tuff (BLT) around 385 000 yr BP. The Campagnola Tuff, the youngest ignimbrite of the BLT, however, drapes the caldera margin and must postdate at least the initial stages of collapse. During the subsequent history of the caldera there were several major explosive eruptions. The largest of these was that of the Galluccio Tuff at about 300 000 yr BP. It is likely that there was further collapse within the main caldera associated with these eruptions. It is of note that despite these subsequent major explosive eruptions later collapse occurred within the confines of the main caldera. Between eruptions caldera lakes developed producing numerous lacustrine beds within the caldera fill. Extensive phases of phreatomagmatic activity generated thick sequences of pyroclastic surge and fall deposits. Activity within the main caldera ended with the growth of a large complex of basaltic trachyandestite lava domes around 150 000 yr BP. Early in the history of Roccamonfina sector collapse on the northern flank of the volcano formed the northern caldera. One of the youngest major events on Roccamonfina occurred at the head of this northern caldera with explosive activity producing the Conca Ignimbrite and associated caldera. There is no evidence that there was any linkage in the plumbing systems that fed eruptions in the main and northern calderas. 相似文献

The 2002–03 Mt Etna flank eruption began on 26 October 2002 and finished on 28 January 2003, after three months of continuous explosive activity and discontinuous lava flow output. The eruption involved the opening of eruptive fissures on the NE and S flanks of the volcano, with lava flow output and fire fountaining until 5 November. After this date, the eruption continued exclusively on the S flank, with continuous explosive activity and lava flows active between 13 November and 28 January 2003. Multi-disciplinary data collected during the eruption (petrology, analyses of ash components, gas geochemistry, field surveys, thermal mapping and structural surveys) allowed us to analyse the dynamics of the eruption. The eruption was triggered either by (i) accumulation and eventual ascent of magma from depth or (ii) depressurisation of the edifice due to spreading of the eastern flank of the volcano. The extraordinary explosivity makes the 2002–03 eruption a unique event in the last 300 years, comparable only with La Montagnola 1763 and the 2001 Lower Vents eruptions. A notable feature of the eruption was also the simultaneous effusion of lavas with different composition and emplacement features. Magma erupted from the NE fissure represented the partially degassed magma fraction normally residing within the central conduits and the shallow plumbing system. The magma that erupted from the S fissure was the relatively undegassed, volatile-rich, buoyant fraction which drained the deep feeding system, bypassing the central conduits. This is typical of most Etnean eccentric eruptions. We believe that there is a high probability that Mount Etna has entered a new eruptive phase, with magma being supplied to a deep reservoir independent from the central conduit, that could periodically produce sufficient overpressure to propagate a dyke to the surface and generate further flank eruptions.Editorial responsibility: J. Consistent age relationships between oppositely magnetized dykes of the 2.45 Ga Matachewan dyke swarm suggest that only a single magnetic field reversal occurred during the period of igneous activity. The magnetic field throughout most of this time was characterized by a SSW declination and shallow negative inclination but reversed toward the waning stages of magmatism. The new paleomagnetic data provide the oldest known magnetic reversal for which the relative reversal sense is known. 相似文献

Bulk atmospheric deposition of major cations (Na, K, Ca, Mg) and anions (Cl, F, SO4) were measured at 15 sites around an active volcano, Mount Etna, from 2001 to 2003. Their composition indicates several natural
sources, among which deposition of plume-derived volcanogenic gas compounds is prevalent for F, Cl and S. Plume-derived acidic
compounds are also responsible for the prevailing acidic composition of the samples collected on the summit of the volcano
(pH in the 2.45–5.57 range). Cation species have complex origin, including deposition of plume volcanogenic ash and aerosols
and soil-dust wind re-suspension of either volcanic or carbonate sedimentary rocks.
Variation of the deposition rates during the March 2001–March 2003 period, coupled with previous measurements from 1997 to
2000 (Appl Geochem 16:985–1000, 2001), were compared with the variation of SO2 flux, volcanic activity and rainfall. The deposition rate was mainly controlled by rainfall. Commonly, about 0.1–0.9% of
HF, HCl and SO2 emitted by the summit crater's plume were deposited around the volcano. We estimate that ∼2 Gg of volcanogenic sulphur were
deposited over the Etnean area during the 2002–2003 flank eruption, at an average rate of ∼24 Mg day−1 which is two orders of magnitude higher than that typical of quiescent degassing phases. 相似文献

Seismic activity recorded at Mount Etna during 1992 was characterized by long-period (LP) events and tremor with fluctuating amplitudes. These signals were associated with the evolution of the eruptive activity that began on December 14, 1991. Following the occurrence of numerous volcano-tectonic earthquakes at the onset of the eruption, LP events dominated the overall seismicity starting in January, 1992. The LP activity occurred primarily in swarms, which were temporally correlated with episodic collapses of the crater floor in the Northeast Crater. Source depths determined for selected LP events suggest a source region located slightly east of Northeast Crater and extending from the surface to a depth of 2000 m. Based on the characteristic signatures of the time series, four families of LP events are identified. Each family shares common spectral peaks independent of azimuth and distance to the source. These spectral features are used to develop a fluid-filled crack model of the source. We hypothesize that the locus of the LP events represents a segment of the magma feeding system connecting a depressurizing magma body with a dike extending in the SSE direction along the western wall of Valle del Bove, toward the site of the Mount Etna eruption. We surmise that magma withdrawal from the source volume beneath Northeast Crater may have caused repeated collapses of the crater floor. Some collapse events may have produced pressure transients in the subjacent dike which acted as seismic wave sources for LP events. 相似文献

The relationships between soil gas emissions and both tectonic and volcano-tectonic structures on Mt. Etna have been studied.
The investigation consisted of soil CO2 flux measurements along traverses orthogonal to the main faults and eruptive fissures of the volcano. Anomalous levels of
soil degassing were found mainly in coincidence with faults, whereas only 49% of the eruptive fissures were found to produce
elevated CO2 soil fluxes. This result suggests that only zones of strain are able to channel deep gases to the surface. According to this
hypothesis, several previously unknown structures are suggested. Based on our geochemical data, new structural maps of different
areas of Etna are proposed. The soil CO2 fluxes observed in this study are higher than those measured in a 1987 study, and they are consistent with the higher level
of volcanic unrest during the current study.

Two types of continuously recording tiltmeter and a new “integrating seismometer” were tested on Etna during the period September to December 1976. The primary object was the investigation of techniques for the surveillance and prediction of volcanic activity, but some information on the internal structure and mechanism of Etna was also obtained. It was concluded that a network of tiltmeters combined with seismic monitoring (using standard and/or integrating seismometers) offers the best dual approach to the problem of determining the true state of dormant volcanoes, and predicting the date and site of possible future eruptions. 相似文献

At Mt. Etna volcano, the emission of plagioclase megacryst-bearing lavas, known locally as “cicirara”, has occurred rarely
and generally in association with unusual volcanological phenomena. In this work, we interpret the magma chamber processes
and the structural features of the plumbing system that led to the production of these peculiar volcanic rocks, based on a
detailed study of plagioclase megacrysts, including their oscillatory zoning, sieve textures, and fluid inclusions. Patchy
zoning suggests limited ascent in the deep levels of the plumbing system, based on the plagioclase nucleation threshold and
the volatile saturation depth. At intermediate, water-undersaturated levels of the plumbing system ascent is faster, as indicated
by crystals with coarse sieve textures. Storage at shallow, water-saturated levels (less than 6 km deep) is associated with
oscillatory zoning with very small changes in An. Slightly larger An variations coupled with different wavelengths provide
evidence of convection of crystals across distinct zones of the chamber. Stripes of melt inclusions formed at steps of magma
ascent and volatile loss, whereas layers of fluid inclusions may be related to episodes of volatile flushing into the magma
chamber. In contrast, strongly sieve-textured envelopes with An increase and constant FeO may be related to mixing with more
volatile-rich magmas of similar composition. We interpret the repeated occurrence of “cicirara” lavas as evidence that the
shallow portion of the plumbing system underwent a progressive coalescence of a complex network of dykes and sills in response
to increasing rates of magma supply from depth. Major magma withdrawals from this larger reservoir may be linked to episodes
of summit instability associated with major caldera collapses. 相似文献

Macroseismic studies, linear refraction profiles, and a two-dimensional seismic array study on Mount Etna, have all detected anomalous low velocity zones beneath the volcano. Seismic travel time delays together with high frequency attenuation observations confirm the presence of a large volume of partial melt beneath the volcano. We describe a low-cost application of digital photogrammetry using commercially available photogrammetric software and oblique
photographs taken with an off-the-shelf digital camera to create sequential digital elevation models (DEMs) of a lava dome
that grew during the 2004–2008 eruption of Mount St. Helens (MSH) volcano. Renewed activity at MSH provided an opportunity
to devise and test this method, because it could be validated against other observations of this well-monitored volcano. The
datasets consist of oblique aerial photographs (snapshots) taken from a helicopter using a digital single-lens reflex camera.
Twelve sets of overlapping digital images of the dome taken during 2004–2007 were used to produce DEMs and to calculate lava
dome volumes and extrusion rates. Analyses of the digital images were carried out using photogrammetric software to produce
three-dimensional coordinates of points identified in multiple photos. The evolving morphology of the dome was modeled by
comparing successive DEMs. Results were validated by comparison to volume measurements derived from traditional vertical photogrammetric
surveys by the US Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory. Our technique was significantly less expensive and required
less time than traditional vertical photogrammetric techniques; yet, it consistently yielded volume estimates within 5% of
the traditional method. This technique provides an inexpensive, rapid assessment tool for tracking lava dome growth or other
topographic changes at restless volcanoes. 相似文献

We produce a spatial probability map of vent opening (susceptibility map) at Etna, using a statistical analysis of structural features of flank eruptions of the last 2?ky. We exploit a detailed knowledge of the volcano structures, including the modalities of shallow magma transfer deriving from dike and dike-fed fissure eruptions analysis on historical eruptions. Assuming the location of future vents will have the same causal factors as the past eruptions, we converted the geological and structural data in distinct and weighted probability density functions, which were included in a non-homogeneous Poisson process to obtain the susceptibility map. The highest probability of new eruptive vents opening falls within a N-S aligned area passing through the Summit Craters down to about 2,000?m?a.s.l. on the southern flank. Other zones of high probability follow the North-East, East-North-East, West, and South Rifts, the latter reaching low altitudes (~400?m). Less susceptible areas are found around the faults cutting the upper portions of Etna, including the western portion of the Pernicana fault and the northern extent of the Ragalna fault. This structural-based susceptibility map is a crucial step in forecasting lava flow hazards at Etna, providing a support tool for decision makers. 相似文献
