An important feature observed in the wake of the Jupiter-comet clash was the appearance of the ring structure axisymmetrically positioned around the center of the impact. The persistent expansion of the dark rings and its speed indicated an outward propagating gravity wave (Benka, 1995). We employ an analytical model of constant density, uniform finite depth and inviscid fluid layer to investigate the wave motion produced by the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on the Jovian atmosphere. The relevant thermal effects are neglected and an explosion resulting from the collision is then described by an initial impulsive pressure at the surface of the Jovian atmosphere. Under the assumption that all the kinetic energy of a comet fragment is completely converted into the energy of wave motions in the Jovian atmosphere, an analytical formula describing the relationship between the resulting wave motion in the atmosphere and the parameters of a comet fragment (the radius, density and speed) is derived. Results from the present simple analytical model give a qualitative agreement with observations regarding the distance and speed of the waves.  相似文献

After the collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) with Jupiter, some ring structures were observed propagating outwards at a constant speed (∼450 m/s) on the Jovian surface. These are thought to be linear waves caused by the collision. A linear model of the collision is presented, in which the Jovian atmosphere is considered as an irrotational, inviscid, stratified and incompressible fluid layer moving at a speed of U = b + az. We take an initial impulsive pressure p(r; 0) as the initial condition and solve the fluid dynamics equations for inertia-gravity waves. It is found that most part of the perturbation energy is used to produce internal waves when Jovian atmosphere moves at a constant speed (U = Uo (∼170 m/s)). A relation between the impact depth H and the horizontal phase speed vp is deduced. Finally, the inertia-gravity waves are discussed for the case U = b + az and it is found that the perturbation energy is then not divided equally between kinetic energy and potential energy because of the effect of a shear.  相似文献

Ulysses had a “distant encounter” with Jupiter in February 2004. The spacecraft passed from north to south, and it observed Jovian radio waves from high to low latitudes (from +80° to +10°) for few months during its encounter. In this study, we present a statistical investigation of the occurrence characteristics of Jovian quasi-periodic bursts, using spectral data from the unified radio and plasma wave experiment (URAP) onboard Ulysses. The latitudinal distribution of quasi-periodic bursts is derived for the first time. The analysis suggested that the bursts can be roughly categorized into two types: one having periods shorter than 30 min and one with periods longer than 30 min, which is consistent with the results of the previous analysis of data from Ulysses’ first Jovian flyby [MacDowall, R.J., Kaiser, M.L., Desch, M.D., Farrell, W.M., Hess, R.A., Stone, R.G., 1993. Quasi-periodic Jovian radio bursts: observations from the Ulysses radio and plasma wave. Experiment. Planet. Space Sci. 41, 1059-1072]. It is also suggested that the groups of quasi-periodic bursts showed a dependence on the Jovian longitude of the sub-solar point, which means that these burst groups are triggered during a particular rotational phase of the planet. Maps of the occurrence probability of these quasi-periodic bursts also showed a unique CML/MLAT dependence. We performed a 3D ray tracing analysis of the quasi-periodic burst emission to learn more about the source distribution. The results suggest that the longitudinal distribution of the occurrence probability depends on the rotational phase. The source region of quasi-periodic bursts seems to be located at an altitude between 0.4 and 1.4 Rj above the polar cap region (L>30).  相似文献

The stability to temporal variations of the Jovian dust ring is a property which may soon be measured, and can in principle give a clue as to the origin of the ring. In this analysis fluctuations in the ring topology and intensity are determined over various relevant time scales, assuming the origin model proposed by Johnson etal. (1980) and Morfill etal. (1980a, b) to apply. It is concluded that the ring is a quasi-permanent and quasi-stable feature of the Jovian system.  相似文献

Instability of whistler wave in collisionless current sheet is studied with numerical solution of the general dispersion relation obtained in Ref.[4] for the physical model A. As revealed by the results, the whistler wave can be directly absorbed by collisionless current sheets. On the neutral sheet (z/di = 0) oblique whistler waves over a rather wide range of wave numbers can propagate, while they are basically stable. In the ionic inertial region (z/di < 1), the obliquely propagating whistler wave is unstable. On the edge of the ionic inertial region (z/di = 1), the whistler wave is still unstable, with an increase in the growth rate, and in the frequency of the unstable wave. The growth rate is larger for the whistler wave propagating towards the neutral sheet (kzdi < 0) than away from the neutral sheet (kzdi > 0).  相似文献

In the course of the magnetic storm of 4 September 1984, after an inverse sudden impulse (SI), geomagnetic pulsations in the Pc5-frequency range were observed at magnetometer stations in the local evening sector. They occurred at L-values of 6, and lasted for several hours, their period increasing from about 320 to 550 s. In this study, two events of enhanced activity are discussed in some detail. During the 16:00 U.T. event, a favourable position of the AMPTE/IRM spacecraft allows conjugate observations in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and in the magnetosphere. This constellation permits a precise determination of the wave mode. During a later intensification around 18:00 U.T., the AMPTE/CCE spacecraft near local noon monitored poloidal waves, obviously driving the pulsations on the ground. Generally, the observations are consistent with the theory of field line resonance. They are interpreted as being excited by pressure variations in the solar wind. The hydromagnetic cavity mode is assumed to link the magnetopause surface motions to the field line resonances.  相似文献

The interaction of the Jovian energetic radiation belt electrons, and the Jovian plasma, with an ambient dust population is examined. Firstly the distribution of dust, ejected from Io, in the inner magnetosphere is calculated. Using the mass loss in submicron particles of ~13g/sec, which is required to model the intensity and shape of the Jovian ring in the model of Morfill etal. (1980b), it is possible to quantitatively calculate losses of magnetospheric ions and electrons due to direct collisions with charged dust particles as well as multiple Coulomb scattering with resultant losses in the Jovian atmosphere. It is shown that the magnitude and radial dependence of the losses are sufficient to explain the electron measurements, although the possibility that some other process may be more effective cannot be ruled out. The same dust population has, on the other hand, no significant effect on the plasma, which should therefore be transported essentially loss free, except within the Jovian ring, if there are no other processes involved. Comparison with the data shows that loss free transport outside the ring does indeed satisfy the measurement constraints.  相似文献

Examination of thermal plasma data obtained by low-altitude satellite measurements indicates that the intersection of the cusp in the dayside magnetosphere with the topside ionosphere creates a distinct plasma geometry at low altitudes. This region consists of one or two plasma discontinuities with steep boundaries. As a result of the plasma structuring in the cusp which commonly takes place in the winter hemisphere, the propagation of compressional surface MHD waves is supported. This point is illustrated by an analysis of the polarization state of compressional surface MHD waves propagating along a plasma layer with thickness a and ambient magnetic field B0 parallel to the interfaces. The results obtained are applicable to the case of a single interface, which is derived in the limit a → ∞. In the general case the polarization of the compressional surface MHD waves in the plane transverse to the magnetic field B0 is elliptical. This feature of the polarization state of the compressional surface modes does not follow from the former analysis by Edwin and Roberts (1982, Solar Phys. 76, 239) for a magnetic slab, because the disturbance components parallel to the interfaces and perpendicular to the magnetic field B0 have not been examined. Although the absence of these components does not prove to be essential for deriving the exact dispersion equation for arbitrary wave directions of the surface modes, they must be included when considering polarization states. The surface mode polarization in the plasma layer changes its sense three times: at interfaces X = 0 and X = a and in the middle plane X = a/2. For the symmetrical (sausage) mode the wave disturbance component bn transverse (normal) to the interfaces becomes zero in the middle plane; for the asymmetrical (kink) mode, the component bt parallel to the interfaces and transverse to the ambient magnetic field is zeroed in the same plane. For a moving observer such as a satellite the polarization patterns which might be recorded change, depending on the velocity of the observer and the angles at which the layered cusp is traversed. An essential feature in the polarization of the compressional surface MHD modes is the presence of jumps in the magnetic disturbance component bt at the interfaces. These jumps disappear only for propagation along the ambient magnetic field. In this particular case the component bt vanishes and then the surface modes are undistinguishable from the body modes.  相似文献

Energy conversion rates from the extraordinary mode to the ordinary mode ofthe electromagnetic waves in the Jovian plasmasphere has been calculated for a model of the sharp boundary that is given in the vicinity of the position where ω = ωp, for an angular frequency ω and the angular plasma frequency ωp. The extraordinary mode electromagnetic wave that is obtained as a result of the transformation of a longitudinal propa- gating through an inhomogenous plasma is here considered. The results give conversion rates of 1–50 per cent, at the most, when a wave normal direction of an is nearly parallel to the boundary normal direction and when the Jovian magnetic field vector is close to the boundary normal direction within an angle range from 10° to 15°. The electric field intensity, in range from 7 to 70 mV/m, of the original electrostatic electron cyclotron plasma waves can give the power flux in a range from 10-22 to 10-20W/m2 Hz for the Jovian decameter waves observed at the Earth's surface. Efficient energy conversion is possible only when the ray direction of the emitted wave is in nearly perpendicular direction with respect to the magnetic field; this is the origin of the sharp beam emission of the Jovian decameter wave burst.  相似文献

Non-similarity solutions are obtained for one-dimensional isothermal and adiabatic flow behind strong cylindrical shock wave propagation in a rotational axisymmetric dusty gas, which has a variable azimuthal and axial fluid velocity. The dusty gas is assumed to be a mixture of small solid particles and perfect gas.The equilibrium flow conditions are assumed to be maintained, and the density of the mixture is assumed to be varying and obeying an exponential law.The fluid velocities in the ambient medium are assumed to obey exponential laws. The shock wave moves with variable velocity. The effects of variation of the mass concentration of solid particles in the mixture, and the ratio of the density of solid particles to the initial density of the gas on the flow variables in the region behind the shock are investigated at given times. Also,a comparison between the solutions in the cases of isothermal and adiabatic flows is made.  相似文献

The ionosphere of Jupiter's satellite Io, discovered by the Pioneer 10 radio-occultation experiment, cannot easily be understood in terms of a model of a gravitationally bound, Earth-like ionosphere. Io's gravitational field is so weak that a gravitationally bound ionosphere would probably be blown away by the ram force of the Jovian magnetospheric wind — i.e., the plasma corotating in the Jovian magnetosphere. We propose here a model in which the material for Io's atmosphere and ionosphere is drawn from the ionosphere of Jupiter through a Birkeland current system that is driven by the potential induced across Io by the Jovian corotation electric field. We argue that the ionization near Io is caused by a comet-like interaction between the corotating plasma and Io's atmosphere. The initial interaction employs the critical velocity phenomenon proposed many years ago by Alfvén. Further ionization is produced by the impact of Jovian trapped energetic electrons, and the ionization thus created is swept out ahead of Io in its orbit. Thus, we suggest that what has been reported as a day-night ionospheric asymmetry is in fact an upstream-downstream asymmetry caused by the Jovian magnetospheric wind.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30th May, 1978.  相似文献

The final stage of the accretion of Uranus and Neptune is numerically investigated. The four Jovian planets are considered with Jupiter and Saturn assumed to have reached their present sizes, whereas Uranus and Neptune are taken with initial masses 0.2 of their present ones. Allowance is made for the orbital variation of the Jovian planets due to the exchange of angular momentum with interacting bodies (“planetesimals”). Two possible effects that may have contributed to the accretion of Uranus and Neptune are incorporated in our model: (1) an enlarged cross section for accretion of incoming planetesimals due to the presence of extended gaseous envelopes and/or circumplanetary swarms of bodies; and (2) intermediate protoplanets in mid-range orbits between the Jovian planets. Significant radial displacements are found for Uranus and Neptune during their accretion and scattering of planetesimals. The orbital angular momentum budgets of Neptune, Uranus, and Saturn turn out to be positive; i.e., they on average gain orbital angular momentum in their interactions with planetesimals and hence they are displaced outwardly. Instead, Jupiter as the main ejector of bodies loses orbital angular momentum so it moves sunward. The gravitational stirring of planetesimals caused by the introduction of intermediate protoplanets has the effect that additional solid matter is injected into the accretion zones of Uranus and Neptune. For moderate enlargements of the radius of the accretion cross section (2–4 times), the accretion time scale of Uranus and Neptune are found to be a few 108 years and the initial amount of solid material required to form them of a few times their present masses. Given the crucial role played by the size of the accretion cross section, questions as to when Uranus and Neptune acquired their gaseous envelopes, when the envelopes collapsed onto the solid cores, and how massive they were are essential in defining the efficiency and time scale of accretion of the two outer Jovian planets.  相似文献

An analysis of the transverse magnetic field effects on the free convective flow of an incompressible, electrically conducting viscous fluid past an infinite non-conducting and non-magnetic, vertical limiting surface (e.g., of a star), has been carried out. The limiting surface is assumed to move after receiving an initial impulse. Exact solutions to equations governing the flow are derived with the help of the Laplace transform technique. The velocity, the induced magnetic field, the skin-friction and the electric current density are shown graphically. The effects of the Grashof numberG, the Prandtl numberP, and the magnetic parameterM are described during the course of discussion.  相似文献

A baroclinic model of the Jovian atmosphere is assumed. The zonal flow in the neighborhood of the Great Red Spot has been modeled by an unsymmetrical shear layer. The calculated solitary wave flow fields consist of various combinations of regions of closed streamlines and regions of reversed flow. Some of these flows fields closely resemble those observed around the Great Red Spot but the lack of accurate atmospheric data makes it difficult to determine the type of flow field that would be predicted by the theory.  相似文献

When planetary accretion proceeds in the gas disk-solar nebula, a protoplanet attracts surrounding gas to form a distended H2-He atmosphere. The blanketing effect of the atmosphere, hampering the escape of accretional energy, enhances the surface temperature of planets. Furthermore, evaporation of ice or reduction of surface silicate and metallic oxide can supply a huge amount of water vapor into the atmosphere, which would raise the temperature and promote evaporation. Evaporated materials can be efficiently conveyed outward by vigorous convection, and condensed dust particles should keep the atmosphere opaque during accretion. The size of this opaque atmosphere dust blob is defined by the gravitational radius, which exceeds 3 × 108 m when the planetary mass is the Earth's mass (5.97 × 1024 kg). This is larger than the radii of present Jovian planets and so-called brown dwarfs. The expected lifetime of dust blobs is 106–107 yr, which is longer than that of the later gas accreting and cooling stages of Jovian planets. The number of dust blobs could exceed that of Jovian planets. If the gas disk is rather transparent, the possibility of observing such objects with a distended atmosphere may be higher than that of detecting Jovian planets. Contamination of the gas disk by the dust from primary atmospheres is negligible.Paper presented at the Conference on Planetary Systems: Formation, Evolution, and Detection held 7–10 December, 1992 at CalTech, Pasadena, California, U.S.A.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the dynamics of the electrostatic disruption products of fragile interplanetary dust aggregates which are initially electrically charged on entering the Jovian plasmasphere. On account of their large specific charges, these small dust fragments are strongly effected both by the Lorentz electric force as well as by the polarization electric force resulting from the corotation of the Jovian plasmasphere. The detailed orbits of these charged dust fragments, which are shown to be confined to the equatorial plane, are computed for various launch angles. It is established that the fragments with radii typically around 1 are magneto-gravitationally trapped within the plasma sphere due to the velocity induced oscillation of their surface potentials. The spatial distribution of these fragments are evaluated and the time evolution of the distributions followed. On this basis it is argued that the distribution of micrometeoroid dust within the Jovian magnetospheres, observed by the Pioneer 10 and the recent Voyager spacecraft, is a result of this magneto-gravitational trapping and subsequent orbital evolution of these charged dust fragments. Our discussion includes both the sudden increase, by over an order of magnitude, of the micrometeoroid dust flux at about 30R J observed by Pioneer 10, and the thin inner dust ring recently observed by the Voyaer spacecraft. The observed brightness asymmetries between the leading and trailing sides of the Galilean satellites appears to be a natural consequence of the impact geometries of these charged dust grains with the satellite surfaces.  相似文献

Previous studies of the residual masses resulting from ablation of small meteoroid grains have been concerned with the ablation of particles which enter the atmosphere independently. There is widespread evidence that fragmentation is a common occurrence for meteors ranging from bright fireballs to the smallest meteors recorded with optical techniques. According to a widely accepted model, meteoroids can be considered to be a collection of tiny grains, with these grains being detached from the meteoroid during atmospheric flight. This investigation numerically solves the differential equations governing ablation of grains detached at different heights. Initial velocities from 12 to 70km s−1, and initial masses from 10−5 to 10−13kg, are considered. The ablation equations allow for thermal heating prior to the onset of intensive evaporation, and thermal reradiation throughout. The atmospheric density profile used is one based on the U.S. Standard Atmosphere (1962, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington). Calculations were completed for grains detached at 120, 100, 95, 90, 85, 80 and 75km height. For the purposes of the ablation model it is assumed that grains are ejected with an initial temperature of 1300 K, and that intensive grain evaporation begins at 2100 K. These values are consistent with grains emitted according to the model of Hawkes and Jones (1975a, Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc. 173, 339; Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc. 185, 727). For comparison purposes, calculations were also completed for grains entering the atmosphere independently (initial height 140km and beginning temperature 280 K assumed).

It is found that particles ejected at heights of 100km and above behave essentially as independent particles incident from infinity. Hence the results of earlier studies (e.g. Nicol et al., 1985, Planet. Space Sci.33, 315) can be applied. For ejection at lower heights the resultant residual mass is somewhat less than that corresponding to grains of the same initial mass and velocity. The difference is greatest for high velocity, low mass meteors. For initial masses near 10−5kg, residual mass is almost independent of ejection height, at least down to an ejection height of 75km. The significant finding of Nicol et al. (1985, Planet. Space Sci.33, 315) that residual mass is almost independent of initial mass for a fairly wide range of initial masses is only loosely followed when in-flight ejection of particles at heights below about 95 km is considered.

Typical calculations are presented to show that in-flight fragmentation of dustballs can be an important source of macroscopic ablation product micrometeorites. The astronomical and atmospheric implications of this finding are briefly discussed.  相似文献
