Summary In the solar neighborhood, approximately half of all intermediate mass main sequence stars with initially between 1 and about 5 Mbecome carbon stars with luminosities near 104 L for typically less than 106 years. These high luminosity carbon stars lose mass at rates nearly always in excess of 10–7 M yr–1 and sometimes in excess of 10–5 M yr–1. Locally, close to half of the mass returned into the interstellar medium by intermediate mass stars before they become white dwarfs is during the carbon star phase. A much greater fraction of lower metallicity stars become carbon-rich before they evolve into planetary nebulae than do higher metallicity stars; therefore, carbon stars are much more importan t in the outer than in the inner Galaxy.  相似文献

The age decay of two indicators of the stellar magnetic activity (λ 2800 Mgii emission flux and λ 10830 Hei equivalent width) have been studied for field solar-type stars. The Li abundance has been used, in most of the cases, as a stellar age indicator. A calibrated decay law for Mgii has been determined and compared with a similar one, recently published, for the Caii K emission. The greater scatter in the Hei results is atributed to the different rotation rates.  相似文献

Observations of the Pleiades cluster by the method of stellar tracks, carried out on the 40-inch Schmidt telescope of Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, have resulted in the detection of 49 flares from 38 stars, 17 of which were not previously known to be flare stars. It is shown that for bright stars (U ≤ 16.0) the detection of flares in observations by the method of stellar tracks is at least three times more efficient than for observations by the method of stellar chains. Another advantage of the first method is that one can detect brief flares that last less than 6 min. The visual stellar magnitude at the minimum for the brightest of the flare stars that we found is 11.92. This raised the upper luminosity limit of known flare stars in the Pleiades by 0.21 magnitude. A comparison of the expected number of bright flare stars in the Pleiades with the number of all bright members of the cluster (falling in the range from V ≈ 12.0 toV ≈16.0) suggested that all these stars evidently must be flare stars. Computation and a wealth of new observational techniques have reinvigorated dynamical studies of galaxies and star clusters. These objects are examples of the gravitationaln-body problem withn in the range from a few hundred to 1011. Relaxation effects dominate at the low end and are completely negligible at the high end. The gravitationaln-body problem is chaotic, and the principal challenge in doing physics where that problem is involved (whether computationally or with analytic theory) is to ensure that chaos has not vitiated the results. Enforcing a Liouville theorem accomplishes this with collision-free large-n problems, but equivalent recipes are not in common use for smallern. We describe some important insights and discoveries that have come from computation in stellar dynamics, discuss chaos briefly, and indicate the way the physics that comes up in different astronomical contexts is addressed in numerical methods currently in use. Graphics is a vital part of any computational approach. The long range prospects are very promising for continued high scientific productivity in stellar dynamics.  相似文献

The present paper contains an attempt to formulate a theory, based on fast electrons hypothesis, of the chromospheres of flare stars. At the same time we shall undertake a survey of observations on the emission lines of flare stars and comparisons with the theory. The general discussion in the introduction concerning the civilian right of fast electron hypothesis is followed by sections in which the following problems are tackled: the anatomy of the light curve of the flare in UV Cet-type stars or its division into two components; the sources of radiation, ionizing hydrogen and other elements, and the estimation of their power in cold dwarf stars with emission lines; conditions for the excitation of emission lines in the chromospheres of those stars; the problem of duration of luminescence of flare stars in the emission lines (observations and theory); the electron temperature and electron concentration in the chromospheres of flare stars; the problem of the luminescence of emission lines in the quiescent star; the degree of ionization and the role of inelastic collisions of the electrons in the chromosphere of flare stars; the profiles of emission lines, their broadening and intensification during the flare; the dependence of the infensity of emission lines on the flare amplitude; the nature and peculiarities of two types of the Haro flares; the impact of radiation dilution and the spectral class of the star on the equivalent width of the emission lines; the possibility of exciting the forbidden lines; the problem of generation of the emission lines of neutral and ionized helium; the possibility of the Lyman-alpha emission in flare stars, the expected parameters of such emission — the radiation power, the equivalent width and profile of the Lyman-alpha line; the possibility of the presence of the strongest (after the -line) emission line — of doublet 2800 Mgii in the spectra of flare stars, the expected value of the intensity and equivalent width of that line.  相似文献

The relatively brief history of infrared observations and quantitative analysis of massive stars in the Galactic Center is reviewed. Current observational and the theoretical status is also reported: A new generation of NLTE wind blanketed models, together with high S/N spectra of the hot star population are allowing one, for the first time, to perform metal abundance determinations (Fe, Si, Mg, Na, etc). Metallicity studies of hot stars in the IR will provide major constraints not only on the theory of evolution of massive stars but also on our efforts to solve the puzzle of the central parsecs of the Galaxy. The transition from a neutron star to a pion-condensed star is investigated in Newtonian hydrodynamics. It is shown that in a certain range of ultradense equations of state, there occurs a mass ejection with energies comparable with usual supernova outputs. But the ejected mass is only in the order of 0.02M . Therefore, the observable consequences of this transition are not so dramatic as conjectured recently. In a realistic scenario including a stiff ultradense equation of state and a weak effect of pion condensation the mass ejection disappears. Additionally the collapse of a stellar core to a neutron star with pion-condensed core is considered. In comparison with a standard supernova scenario we find only a slightly reduced explosion energy. Further, the possible consequence of pion condensation during the secular evolution of the bounced core of a collapsing star to the cool final neutron star is discussed.  相似文献
