The net influx of the circumpolar water on the western (approximately along 10°E) and eastern (approximately 115°E) boundaries of the Indian Ocean, adopting the method of Montgomery and Stroup is computed on bivariate distribution of potential thermosteric anomaly and salinity to identify the characteristics of the flux. The zonal flux at both the boundaries indicates an alternate strong easterly and westerly flow between 36°S and 45°S, south of which the flow is mainly easterly but weak up to 56°S. At the western boundary the easterly flow is 146 Sv and westerly is 98.07 Sv, while at the eastern boundary (115°E) the corresponding fluxes are 123.46 Sv and 27.20 Sv respectively, indicating a net outflux of 48.33 Sv. This water should have been accounted by the melting of ice and influx of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean Water.  相似文献

The field of mechanical energy transfer from the atmosphere to the ocean is computed for the first time. The numerical simulation of waves within the Indian Ocean (IO) water area for the period of 1998?C2009 is used. Mechanical energy transfer is described by two integrated parameters calculated per area unit: the speed of complete energy flux from wind to waves, I E (x, t), and the speed of complete losses in the energy of wind waves, D E (x, t). In order to solve this problem, the wind field W(x, t) (the NCEP/NOAA data) is used; the I E (x, t) and D E (x, t) fields are calculated on the basis of the WAM numerical model containing a modified source function. The results obtained allow us, first, to assess the characteristic spatial distribution of zones ??pumped?? by the wind with mechanical energy for both the wave field and the upper layer of the ocean by seasons, years, and the whole period discussed, second, to determine the extreme and average zonal values of I E (x, t) and D E (x, t), the degree of their shift spacing and balance B E = (I E + D E ); and third, to define the characteristic time scales of variations in the wind field and wave field energies, caused by energy transfer from the wind to waves in the zones and within the Indian ocean as a whole. These results significantly specify the climatic estimates obtained earlier.  相似文献

Preferential water loss from synthetic fluid inclusions   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A fundamental question in most fluid inclusion studies is whether inclusions behave as compositionally closed systems after trapping, and, thus, represent samples of the fluid phase(s) present in the system at the time of their formation. This question was addressed in high-temperature laboratory experiments with synthetic fluid inclusions in quartz and it was found that at 825°C the inclusions exhibited open-system behavior with respect to water. Synthetic salt-water fluid inclusions in quartz were reequilibrated for 12 hours to 35 days at 825° C in a dry argon atmosphere under 1.5 kbar confining pressure. These conditions created initial internal overpressures (P int> P conf) of 1.5–4 kbar in the inclusions and differential water fugacities in the same sense i.e., fH2OfH2O. After 108 hours of reequilibration, preferential water loss had resulted in salinity increases as large as 22 wt% salt (e.g., from 57 to 79 wt% NaCl, as determined from measured temperatures of salt dissolution). Also, following reequilibration, a strong inverse correlation between salinity and inclusion volume was observed, and this trend became more pronounced with increasing reequilibration time. These observations, together with a lack of evidence for selective H2O removal via hydration reactions, suggest that water loss occurred by a diffusion-related mechanism. Fluxes of 4x10-11 g/cm2-s and diffusion coefficients on the order of 10-9 cm2/s are calculated for water loss from the inclusions. The calculated H2O diffusion coefficient is consistent with the determination of Blacic (1981) derived from hydrolytic weakening experiments, but is much larger than the value obtained by Giletti and Yund (1984) for volume diffusion of oxygen in isotope exchange experiments. These observations suggest that the mechanism of water loss from our synthetic fluid inclusions may have been pipe diffusion along dislocations, subgrain boundaries or other structural defects rather than bulk volume diffusion.The results of this study are relevant to the interpretation of fluid inclusions in quartz from several natural high-temperature environments where water fugacities of included and ambient fluids are known to have evolved along separate paths over geologic time.  相似文献

Paleoclimatic estimates from water and energy budgets of East African Lakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The Turkana, Nakuru-Elmenteita, and Naivasha basins in the Rift Valley of East Africa experienced high water levels during the period of 10,000–7000 yr B.P. Analyses of the modern hydrologic and energy budgets for these basins, along with that of Lake Victoria, were used to infer the amount of precipitation that would have been required to maintain the enlarged paleolakes of the early Holocene. Precipitation must have been at least 150–300 mm/yr (15 to 35%) above the modern average. The precipitation estimates were fairly consistent among the various basins, but no quantitative estimate was made for the additional precipitation required to account for overflow from the Rift Valley lake basins. Discharge from the Lake Victoria basin around 1880 A.D. was considerably above the more recent average, and the increased discharge into the White Nile for that period might have been similar to that of the early Holocene. A sensitivity analysis showed that temperature changes were probably not too important for changing the hydrologic-energy budget; changes of albedo, Bowen ratio, and cloudiness were likely to have been of greater importance.  相似文献

Mineral compositions from cordierite-bearing metasedimentary enclaves adjacent to the Closepet granite in the Bangalore region of the South Indian Craton indicate peak metamorphism in the range 4.5–5.0 kb, 690–730°C. PH2O is found to decrease towards the south and those assemblages which lie south of the charnockite line are formed under conditions of PH2O < 0.3 Ptotal. 250 km north Bangalore, andalusite-bearing assemblages from the northern margin of the Closepet granite indicate peak metamorphic conditions in the range 2.6–3.8 kb, 520–620°C. The inferred piezotacrmic array is strongly convex towards the temperature axis and may represent a transient geotherm in the upper crust related to the emplacement of the Closepet granite or to volatile activity along the margins of the granite.  相似文献

Diffusive water loss from olivine-hosted melt inclusions has been reported previously. This process must be considered when interpreting melt inclusion data. This study measured the rate of water loss from olivine-hosted melt inclusions during heating-stage experiments to test a previous diffusive reequilibration model and the hydrogen diffusion mechanism that controls the rate. Olivine-hosted melt inclusions were heated to a constant temperature in reduced Ar gas in a heating stage for a few hours, and unpolarized Fourier transform infrared spectra were repeatedly measured through the inclusions. Water loss occurred rapidly in the experiments. Within a few hours, the water absorbance at 3,500 cm−1 wavenumber decreased by half. The observed water loss rate can be explained by the diffusive reequilibration model and hydrogen diffusion in olivine coupled with metal vacancy. The beginning of water loss was different in the low- and high-temperature experiments. At low temperatures (1,423 and 1,437 K), water loss did not occur in the initial 1 or 2 h. At high temperatures (1,471–1,561 K), water loss began immediately. The initial time period without water loss at low temperatures may be explained by a hydrogen fugacity barrier in the host olivine. At low temperatures, the internal pressure may be lower than the equilibrium pressure of melt inclusion and olivine, causing lower hydrogen fugacity in the melt inclusion than in the olivine, which will delay the water loss from the melt inclusion. The tested model and diffusivity were used to estimate the rate of water loss during homogenization experiments and magma eruption and cooling. For 1-h homogenization experiment, the model shows that large inclusions (50 μm radius) in large olivines (500 μm radius) are robust against water loss, while large or small inclusions (50–10 μm radius) in small olivines (150 μm radius) may suffer 30–100% water loss. For natural samples, the correlation between water concentration and melt inclusion and olivine sizes may be helpful to infer the initial water concentration, degree of diffusive reequilibration, and magma cooling rate.  相似文献

Objective analysis of daily rainfall at the resolution of 1° grid for the Indian monsoon region has been carried out merging dense land rainfall observations and INSAT derived precipitation estimates. This daily analysis, being based on high dense rain gauge observations was found to be very realistic and able to reproduce detailed features of Indian summer monsoon. The inter-comparison with the observations suggests that the new analysis could distinctly capture characteristic features of the summer monsoon such as north-south oriented belt of heavy rainfall along the Western Ghats with sharp gradient of rainfall between the west coast heavy rain region and the rain shadow region to the east, pockets of heavy rainfall along the location of monsoon trough/low, over the east central parts of the country, over north-east India, along the foothills of Himalayas and over the north Bay of Bengal. When this product was used to assess the quality of other available standard climate products (CMAP and ECMWF reanalysis) at the gird resolution of 2.5°, it was found that the orographic heavy rainfall along Western Ghats of India was poorly identified by them. However, the GPCC analysis (gauge only) at the resolution of 1° grid closely discerns the new analysis. This suggests that there is a need for a higher resolution analysis with adequate rain gauge observations to retain important aspects of the summer monsoon over India. The case studies illustrated show that the daily analysis is able to capture large-scale as well as mesoscale features of monsoon precipitation systems. This study with data of two seasons (2001 and 2003) has shown sufficiently promising results for operational application, particularly for the validation of NWP models.  相似文献

Two intervals of faunal turnover are revealed by the study of radiolarians from the Early to Middle Miocene sequence of Andaman-Nicobar belonging to Stichocorys wolffii-Calocycletta costata-Dorcadospyris alata zones. These faunal changes are reflected in the values of species diversity, change in abundance of taxa, origination and extinction events and change in radiolarian assemblages. One such faunal change is identified in the latest Early Miocene. The time of this faunal change is marked by the extinction of species like Carpocanopsis cingulata and appearance of Calocycletta costata, Giraffospyris toxaria, Acrocubus octopylus and Liriospyris parkerae, an increasing trend in percentage of cold water species and a decreasing trend in species diversity upwards. The interval coincides with the time of initiation of cooling of sea surface water. Another, and the most prominent faunal turnover of radiolarians is recognized in the Middle Miocene Dorcadospyris alata Zone at about 14.8–12.7 Ma and is characterized by almost complete disappearance of an earlier dominant assemblage and an increase in abundance of an assemblage that was practically absent in the older sequence. The time of this turnover can be correlated with the time of Middle Miocene cooling identified in the examined sequence.  相似文献

Magnetotelluric (MT) investigations were carried out along a profile in the greenschist–granulite transition zone within the south Indian shield region (SISR). The profile runs over a length of 110 km from Kuppam in the north to Bommidi in the south. It covers the transition zone with 12 MT stations using a wide-band (1 kHz–1 ks) data acquisition system. The Mettur shear zone (MTSZ) forms the NE extension of Moyar–Bhavani shear zone that traverses along the transition zone. The regional geoelectric strike direction of N40°E identified from the present study is consistent with the strike direction of the MTSZ in the center of the profile. The 2-D conductivity model derived from the data display distinct high electrical resistivity character (10,000 Ω m) below the Archaean Dharwar craton and less resistive (< 3000 Ω m) under the southern granulite terrain located south of the MTSZ. The MTSZ separating the two regions is characterized by steep anomalous high conductive feature at lower crustal depths. The deep seismic sounding (DSS) study carried out along the profile shows dipping signatures on either side of the shear zone. The variation of deep electrical resistivity together with the dipping signature of reflectors indicate two distinct terrains, namely, the Archaean Dharwar Craton in the north and the Proterozoic granulite terrain towards south. They got accreted along the MTSZ, which could represent a possible collision boundary.  相似文献

As the water concentration in magma decreases during magma ascent, olivine-hosted melt inclusions will reequilibrate with the host magma through hydrogen diffusion in olivine. Previous models showed that for a single spherical melt inclusion in the center of a spherical olivine, the rate of diffusive reequilibration depends on the partition coefficient and diffusivity of hydrogen in olivine, the radius of the melt inclusion, and the radius of the olivine. This process occurs within a few hours and must be considered when interpreting water concentration in olivine-hosted melt inclusions. A correlation is expected between water concentration and melt inclusion radius, because small melt inclusions are more rapidly reequilibrated than large ones when the other conditions are the same. This study investigates the effect of diffusive water loss in natural samples by exploring such a correlation between water concentration and melt inclusion radius, and shows that the correlation can be used to infer the initial water concentration and magma ascent rate. Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements show that 31 melt inclusions (3.6–63.9 μm in radius) in six olivines from la Sommata, Vulcano Island, Aeolian Islands, have 0.93–5.28 wt% water, and the host glass has 0.17 wt% water. The water concentration in the melt inclusions shows larger variation than the data in previous studies (1.8–4.52 wt%). It correlates positively with the melt inclusion radius, but does not correlate with the major element concentrations in the melt inclusions, which is consistent with the hypothesis that the water concentration has been affected by diffusive water loss. In a simplified hypothetical scenario of magma ascent, the initial water concentration and magma ascent rate are inferred by numerical modeling of the diffusive water loss process. The melt inclusions in each olivine are assumed to have the same initial water concentration and magma ascent rate. The melt inclusions are assumed to be quenched after eruption (i.e., the diffusive water loss after eruption is not considered). The model results show that the melt inclusions initially had 3.9–5.9 wt% water and ascended at 0.002–0.021 MPa/s before eruption. The overall range of ascent rate is close to the lower limit of previous estimates on the ascent rate of basalts.  相似文献

通过对INDEPTHII在雅鲁藏布江南的2条南北向深地震反射剖面资料的进一步处理,观察到主喜马拉雅逆冲断裂带(MHT)形成的反射向北逐渐倾没于藏南地壳之下。这一反射一直可延伸至康马穹隆北、浪卡子南,在向北延伸的过程中,断裂带向北倾角逐渐加大,可以看到MHT反射最北端的反射同相轴向北倾斜的角度到达27°30'~29°,最深处的双程走时达到22.5s左右。根据深地震反射资料并结合大地电磁(MT)资料,提出印度板块在雅鲁藏布江南30~40km(大约28°50'N)处沿MHT俯冲到了藏南的地壳之下,即在地壳范围内印度板块的最北部边缘位于雅鲁藏布江南30~40km处。  相似文献

Two types of mine-drainage water were recognized in Kerman coalfield, namely neutral to alkaline and acid (AMD). Both types contain a high level of trace-metal concentrations with a higher level in AMD. Trace metals from the coal-mine waters of Kerman coalfield are mainly present as adsorption on Fe and Mn oxide and hydroxide particles, and to a lesser extent as sulfate, simple metal ions and as metal sorption on clay particles and hydrous aluminum oxides.  相似文献

Amphorae sherds from the Laecanius workshop of Roman Istria (10–5 B.C. and 78 A.D.), Croatia, were studied by integrating archaeological and geological techniques including fabric analysis, thin‐section petrography, X‐ray diffractometry (XRD), and heavy mineral analysis. The fabric of the sherds showed distinctive characteristics, permitting their classification and allocation into nine fabric groupss. Petrography revealed that quartz is the dominant clastic component, whereas carbonate is common as temper; XRD provided information on firing temperatures that ranged between 750 and 900°C. The sherds contain diverse heavy mineral suites with generally high epidote and garnet proportions; zircon is occasionally important. Garnet/epidote ratios and the presence of diagnostic species (pyroxene, hornblende) showed systematic variations that coincided with similar variations in fabric characteristics. Heavy mineral signatures of amphorae produced in other workshops proved essential in differentiating them from Laecanius sherds. A comparative heavy mineral analysis of terra rossa samples from the vicinity of the workshop indicated that terra rossa was the major source for the paste. Differences observed in the heavy mineral composition of the sherds and terra rossa were interpreted by the spatial heterogeneity of the latter and the mixing of the paste with sandy temper. Fresh Adriatic sponge spicules in the majority of Laecanius sherds and the temper‐derived, generally immature heavy mineral assemblages suggest that sandy deposits from the Adriatic were used for the clastic temper. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Sapphirine-bearing symplectites that replace kyanite in eclogites from the Greek Rhodope Massif have previously been attributed to a high-pressure granulite-facies metamorphic event that overprinted the eclogitic peak metamorphic assemblage. The eclogitic mineralogy consisted of garnet, omphacitic pyroxene, rutile and kyanite and is largely replaced by low-pressure minerals. Omphacite was initially replaced by symplectites of diopside and plagioclase that were subsequently replaced by symplectites of amphibole and plagioclase. Garnet reacted during decompression to form a corona of plagioclase, amphibole and magnetite. Rutile was partly transformed to ilmenite and kyanite decomposed to produce a high-variance mineral assemblage of symplectitic spinel, sapphirine, plagioclase and corundum. The presence of quartz and corundum in the kyanite eclogites is evidence for the absence of bulk equilibrium and obviates a conventional analysis of phase equilibria based on the bulk-rock composition. To circumvent this difficulty we systematically explored the pressure-temperature-composition (P-T-X) space of a thermodynamic model for the symplectites in order to establish the pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions at which the symplectites were formed after kyanite. This analysis combined with conventional thermometry indicates that the symplectites were formed at amphibolite-facies conditions. The resulting upper-pressure limit (~0.7 GPa) of the sapphirine-producing metamorphic overprint is roughly half the former estimate for the lower pressure limit of the symplectite forming metamorphic event. Temperature was constrained (T ~ 720°C) using garnet-amphibole mineral thermometry. The P-T conditions inferred here are consistent with thermobarometry from other lithologies in the Rhodope Massif, which show no evidence of granulite-facies metamorphism. Regional geological arguments and ion-probe (SHRIMP) zircon dating place the post-eclogite-facies metamorphic evolution in Eocene times.  相似文献

As a consequence of deposition of atmospheric pollution, the lead concentration in the mor layer (the organic horizon) of remote boreal forest soils in Sweden is raised far above natural levels. How the mor will respond to decreased atmospheric pollution is not well known and is dependent on future deposition rates, downward migration losses and upward fluxes in the soil profile. Plants may contribute to the upward flux of lead by ‘pumping’ lead back to the mor surface through root uptake and subsequent litter fall. We use lead concentration and stable isotope (206Pb, 207Pb and 208Pb) measurements of forest vegetation to quantify plant uptake rates from the soil and direct from the atmosphere at two sites in northern Sweden; an undisturbed mature forest and a disturbed site with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) growing on a recently exposed mineral soil (C-horizon) containing a minimum of atmospherically derived pollution lead. Analyses of forest mosses from a herbarium collection (spanning the last ∼100 yr) and soil matrix samples suggest that the atmospheric lead deposited on plants and soil has an average 206Pb/207Pb ratio of 1.15, while lead derived from local soil minerals has an average ratio of ∼1.47. Since the biomass of trees and field layer shrubs has an average 206Pb/207Pb ratio of ∼1.25, this indicates that 70% ± 10% of the inventory of 1 ± 0.8 mg Pb m−2 stored in plants in the mature forest originates from pollution. Needles, bark and apical stemwood of the pine growing on the disturbed soil, show lower 206Pb/207Pb ratios (as low as 1.21) than the roots and basal stemwood (having ratios > 1.36), which indicate that plants are able to incorporate lead directly from the atmosphere (∼50% of the total tree uptake). By partitioning the total uptake of lead into uptake from the atmosphere and different soil layers using an isotopic mixing model, we estimate that ∼0.03 ± 0.01, 0.02 ± 0.01 and 0.05 ± 0.01 mg Pb m−2 yr−1 (mean ± SD), is taken up from the mor layer, the mineral soil and the atmosphere, respectively, by plants in the undisturbed mature forest. These small fluxes, which are at least a magnitude lower than reported downward migration losses, suggest that plant uptake will not strongly prolong the self-cleaning rate of the mor layer.  相似文献

We estimate the shear wave splitting parameters vis-à-vis the thicknesses of the continental lithosphere beneath the two permanent seismic broadband stations located at Dhanbad (DHN) and Bokaro (BOKR) in the Eastern Indian Shield region. Broadband seismic data of 146 and 131 teleseismic earthquake events recorded at DHN and BOKR stations during 2007–2014 were analyzed for the present measurements. The study is carried out using rotation-correlation and transverse component minimization methods. We retain our “Good”, “Fair” and “Null” measurements, and estimate the splitting parameters using 13 “Good” results for DHN and 10 “Good” results for BOKR stations. The average splitting parameters (ϕ, δt) for DHN and BOKR stations are found to be 50.76°±5.46° and 0.82 ± 0.2 s and 56.30°±5.07° and 0.95 ± 0.17 s, and the estimated average thicknesses of the anisotropic layers beneath these two stations are ∼ 94 and ∼109 km, respectively. The measured deviation of azimuth of the fast axis direction (ϕ) from the absolute motion of the Indian plate ranges from ∼8° to 14°. The eastward deviation of the fast axis azimuths from absolute plate motion direction is interpreted to be caused by induced outflow from the asthenosphere. Further, the delay time found in the present analysis is close to the global average for continental shield areas, and also coherent with other studies for Indian shield regions. The five “Null” results and the lower delay time of ∼0.5–0.6 s might be indicating multilayer anisotropy existing in the mantle lithosphere beneath the study area.  相似文献
